Good morning, Laguna Beach. Itis ten am on Sunday, and
that means it is time for anotheredition of the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
My name is Steve Reid. Imight sound a little different today because I've
been working on a little chess cough, but it's heading out of town,
thankfully. I've had it for alittle while. Not COVID. I test
(01:23):
it, not COVID, but itis a chess cold and those are things
we're just irritating. In the meantime. Today I'll be broadcasting under my alter
ego Berry White. Yeah, baby, I appreciate you tuning in here on
Sunday at ten am, every Sundayat ten am here in Laguna Beach,
because it's my job. When youdo to play a show I call the
(01:46):
Coast Highway Shuffle Show. I callit that because we're sitting here on the
Coast Highway here at the Pearl StreetStudio in Laguna beach, and I plan
on shuffling through two hours of musicwith you on the Sunday, as I
do every Sunday. And I'm excitedabout today's selections as I'm excited about every
(02:06):
Sunday's selections, because we get somegreat music to play for you today.
I will be out the next twoSundays. I'll be on vacation. I'm
actually heading over the pond, asthey say in the Atlantic, and heading
over to Paris with my lovely bride, and I'll be out the next two
Sundays doing that. So I'm goingto play a couple of songs today that
(02:29):
are evocative of Paris of France,so I'll be sneaking a few of those
in today. I also want topay tribute to a dear friend of mine
who passed yesterday, and I'll betalking more about him as we get a
little bit deeper into the show. But so we got a full we got
a full slate here for you today, of course, always starting with good
(02:53):
music. And since I mentioned thathomage to France, I'm gonna play our
first song now with exactly that inmind, from the movie am Alie.
This is a song called Love.I'll stay Amlie and the artist is Jon
Tearson, and I'll kind of putus in the mood here on this beautiful
(03:14):
Sunday, an overcast sunday here inLaguna Beach. Welcome everybody, It's time
for the Coast Highway Shuffle show. That such a pet Such except for sex

(05:43):
doesn't that just put you in alittle Parisian frame of mind here? Oh?
I love that song. It alreadygets me excited about this trip coming
up. And we're gonna play, like I said, a couple of songs
that have that kind of a feel, that Parisian feel throughout the show today.
But the next song I'm gonna playfor you is not one of those.
It's a song by an artist bythe name of Ryan Adams, just
(06:04):
an amazing artist, and on hisninth album that was released in two thousand
and seven, it was called EasyTiger, and this particular song, there's
something about it that just makes me, it just captures my imagination. On
my Thursday show with my co hostBrian Hurley, he played a version of
(06:26):
this song that was alive acoustic cutand the song I'm Gonna play for You
Now is the original one off theoriginal album, which just has a little
more punch to it. It's afull band playing the song. I think
you're really gonna like it. I'veplayed it on the song on the show
rather before, although it's been afew months, so it's time to play
it again. This is Everybody Knowsby Ryan Adams here on k x FM.
(07:04):

(09:11):
Oh, that is just a beautifulsong. There's something about those piano
chords along with those acoustic guitar chords. It's just a it's a flawless song.
They're here on the Coast Highway ShuffleShow. The next up song I'm
Gonna play for You is by thegreat East La band Los Lobos. I've
probably seen him in concert maybe Idon't know, nine ten eleven or something
(09:31):
like that, plenty of times.Anytime they're in concert, I make it
a point to go see them. They are fantastic live. I think the
greatest album is Keiko, and I'mgonna play a song off Keiko for you
right now. This is Los Loboswith peace. That's a word and a
phrase and a sentiment that can neverbe overused here on k x FM.
(10:03):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah. Used to see a

I love that vibe, love thatbass saxophone back there but dada dada,
oh man, I love that songthat again. Peace by Los Lobos
here on k x FAM here inLaguna Beach. The next album, actually
the next song You're not gonna playthe whole album. The next song I'm
Gonna play for You is by thegreat early nineties. I'll call them jangle
(14:01):
pop. People call them that. They got a wonderful jangly sound. But
in the early nineties, along withgrunge, there were some great jangle pop
just pop bands that came out,one of them being Gin Blossoms and on
their second album called New Miserable Experience, It's an interesting story. It was
their second album. It was releasedto a very very little fanfare, very
(14:24):
lackluster reviews, but a year afterit was released, a lead single single
called Hey Jealousy entered the top forty. Then they had another song off the
album called found Out about You.You probably can imagine you remember those songs,
as I mentioned them huge hits.Well, the song I'm Gonna Play
for You off this album is notthe hit, but it is the first
(14:46):
track on the album. We havea tendency to play the more obscure songs
here on the show. It's youcan hear hits anywhere, So I'm gonna
play a little more of an obscuresong off this album. I do also
want to notice that, or makenotice of the fact that Doug Hopkins,
who's the guitarist on this album andwas the original guitarist for the band Jin
(15:07):
Blossoms, he was fired as theyended the recording on this album, so
he was replaced by a fellow thatnamed Scott Johnson, who is not on
this album, but he became amember of the band at that point.
Unfortunately, Doug Hopkins, the guitaristyou'll hear on this song and this album,
(15:28):
passed away by suicide a couple ofyears later he had very major struggles
with alcohol and very sad story, kind of casting a shadow over the band
Jin Blossoms. But at this pointthere it's all about the music. And
this is a song, as Isay, called Lost Horizons off their second
album. You're listening to the CoastHighway Shuffle Show on Laguna's only FM,
(15:54):
k x FM, Class Direction, sex scene with Parson Factories, He'll live

Let them. I don't know whatyou done to me, but I know
as much it's true. I wantto do bad things with you. Okay,
(20:33):
when you came in the air,all those shadows there showed up again.
I don't know who you think youare about. Before the light us
through, I want to do badthings with you. I want to do
(21:03):
real bad things to you. Idon't know what you've done to me,
(21:27):
but a little to smile shins true. I want to do bad things just
with you. I want to doreal bad things to you. All right.
(21:52):
You know, I've never known anyonethat doesn't love that song. That
is Jace Everett with bad things. That's the theme, of course from the
HBO series of Maybe Gosh a decadeago or more called True Blood, right,
that great series. I used tolove watching that show, and the
show opens with that song as itstheme song. Just a great vibe on
that right, Oh my goodness, all right, you're listening to k XFM.
(22:15):
We got a couple of more songsto play before the bottom of the
hour. This next artist I'm Gonnaplay is a gentleman by the name of
Keller Williams, and he's been aroundfor a while. He's fifty three years
old. He most notably tours asa solo artist, and he is played
and toured with bands like Yonder MountainString Band, The String Cheese Incident,
(22:37):
I'm Freeze, McGee, rat Dog. You know, he's playing with all
the live jam bands that I justlove. I've you know, my taste
in live music continues to evolve, and I have to admit I've said it
on this show many times. Ilove going to see jam bands play,
including many of the bands I justmentioned there, and Keller Williams very often
tours with them. So that's thekind of player he is. There's an
(23:02):
album of his called Laugh Simply Laugh, and the name of the song I'm
Gonna Play for You off this albumis called Freaker by the speaker, and
by freaker, I'm mean a fanthat's kind of lost in her musical thoughts.
She's in a trance if you will. And she's dancing by the by
(23:22):

is Freaker by the Speaker by KellerWilliams. Here on the Coast Highway shuffle

(27:47):
Oh dude, in the day,I like it that way, but
it's perfectly normal that night. Hi, this is KXFM meteorologist Dave Murray.
(28:26):
Boy Our June gloom in September continuesa rather thick marine layer in place.
It just doesn't want to let go. On this Sunday, clouds and mist,
a little bit of drizzle around intothe early afternoon, but don't expect
a heck of a lot of sun. We'll call it partly to mostly cloud
ease guys as we go through theafternoon, and it is cool sixty nine
(28:48):
seventy for the high this afternoon.Tonight, clouds dominate, a little bit
of mist and drizzle after eleven o'clockor so. Sixty two degrees will do
it for the overnight law. OnMonday, clouds miss rizzle in the morning,
a slow process, but going partlysunny during the afternoon on Monday,
and breezy sixty nine degrees. Coolweather in place most of the week ahead,
(29:10):
with daytime highs in the upper sixtiesand nighttime lows in the fifties.
Boy, oh boy, what happenedto September? That's our weather on meteorologist
Dave Murray for KXFM. Well, thank you, Beach, Thank you Dave
Murray. I appreciate that very much. Sixty nine degrees and breezy. Come
on, it doesn't get any betterthan that here on a September day here
in Laguna Beach. Well, maybeit gets a little bit better if we
(29:33):
give you a little music accompaniment tojoin you. So that's what I'm gonna
continue to do here. My nameis Steve Reid. Were now half an
hour into the two hours we callthe Coast Highway Shuffle Show. Next song
I'm gonna play is one of thosesongs I mentioned i'd play at the start
of the hour, the kind ofevokes Paris or France. This is a
(29:56):
beautiful, beautiful piece by p you'reFrampton and it's called Souvenirs Dens Pats and
you are listening to k XFMM people, Alright, that is Peter Frampton with
(34:55):
a beautiful, beautiful acoustic song theresouven Year's Day nos Perez here on CAx
FM. Well, we've come toa part of the show. Where I
have planned to do something that Ididn't have to expect to I'm very disappointed
and sad and frankly heartbroken for thispart of the show because I'm going to
(35:16):
pay tribute to a friend of minewho passed away two days ago unexpectedly.
Suddenly, I'm referring to a manby the name of Mike Mohan and Mike
and I and our mutual friends JeffBeale, Greg su Lage later on Michael
Schmidt. We all became very closefriends in our early twenties up in Manhattan
(35:37):
Beach, played volleyball together up there, just became great friends, and that
friendship remained intact for over forty yearsuntil Mike's passing two days ago, and
one way we kept it going wasthese annual trips to Mike's place in Prey,
(35:58):
Montana. Mike was very fortunate inhis early thirties to be one of
those rare individuals who hit it bigin the tech sector. And although we
all worked in the tech sector,he was the guy that did the classic
go to the new startup company andget tons of stock at almost nothing and
then have that company go very big. And Mike did that so at the
(36:21):
middle in the middle thirties and wewere all starting families and developing careers.
Mike retired to Montana, where helived until the day he died, and
every year, if not more often, we would get together, and usually
it was a boys ski trip, and we'd get together and Pray stayed his
log cabin and we'd ski, andwe'd snowmobile and we'd ski some more,
(36:43):
and we would certainly do our fairshare of of parting and eating well and
all kinds of great activities as friendsdo. And it really really helped maintain
a very good friendship with Mike amongour little group, as I say,
for over forty years. And whenmy passed away two days ago, it
really struck me that, you know, when you lose a friend that you've
(37:05):
had that long, it's not onlyunexpected and sad, but it really is
a part of you that you're losingall those memories, all those hopes for
doing it again. And so Mikeis going to be missed terribly. He
was a unique guy, a uniquepersonality, incredible voice. He was like
a cartoon character. He's one ofthose guys that if you knew him,
(37:27):
you'd never forget him. Like himor not, you'd never forget him.
And if you liked him like weall did, if he loved him like
we all did as a friend, then you just enjoyed looking forward to getting
with him every year, if notmore, at weddings, at funerals,
at events, and always back toMontana. I had the chance to spend
(37:47):
my last time with Mike this lastFebruary up in Montana, and because of
circumstances, he and I were aloneon this trip, and so it wasn't
a bigger boys trip. It wasjust he and I for five days,
having meals together, hanging out together, driving around Montana together. And I'm
so grateful that I had that chanceto spend that last time with him,
(38:08):
of course, not knowing it wouldbe the last time with him, but
I'll always cherish those times and thosememories. And so I'm going to play
a couple of songs now, afew songs in tribute to Mike Mohan and
the friendships that we all shared againwith guys like Jeff and Sue Lage and
Schmidty, and so this is goingout to all those guys, and in
(38:31):
that spirit, the first song I'mgoing to play for you is by Eric
Clapton off his No Reason to Cryalbum. This is Hello, old Friend,
and the fact that it's off analbum called No Reason to Cry is
oddly prophetic. We're gonna play afew songs now in honor of Mike Mohan.
(39:05):
The sign story down the gon barnsorlow the dark look so pretty?
I was gi me I been downjust ever be Hello friend, really good
(39:31):
to see once again, her friend. Good to see once I saw you
(39:52):
walking on downy the start. Icouldn't stop those hour see not god,
IM sure the distance wouldn't be toobard, My god, I can't walked
you away. You are hello friendly, good to see once again. Friend
(40:24):
to see once again? An oldman asked beyond the street to day thought
(40:55):
I knew you, but I can'tsay stop thinking blue, place this brain?
Where do you take this high?I knew his name, that little
friend. It's really good to seeonce again, a little friend to see
(41:23):
once again, old friend, it'sreally good to see once again, brand
(41:58):
to see all right, that's EricClapton, Hello, old friend and boy.
(42:29):
It's amazing how music brings out theemotions. And you know, I
put the set list together in honormy buddy Mike Mohan and and boy,
the moment you start hearing the music, it dredges all that up. But
that's what music does. It putsus in touch very often with very powerful
thoughts. And you know, Mikewas an old friend. As I said,
we knew him since the first timeI met him. My friend Jeff
(42:52):
Beale and I we were young salesmanat a company we were both at and
they called us in the office oneday and said, hey, there's this
new sales guy for Motorola, whichis one of the companies we repped at
the time. They said, he'sa young guy and you need to take
him out, show him a goodtime. Just get close to him,
show him a good time. SoJeff and I took Mike out to a
(43:15):
King's Gang King's hockey game, andthe rest is history. We ended up
pretty much staying till the wee hoursof the morning in our apartment, hanging
out, getting to know each other. And that's how the friendship started.
And I probably was twenty three, twenty two something like that. And as
I said, Mike left and wasa huge success, moved to Montana and
(43:38):
every time we'd go for these annualevents as I said, skiing and snow
snowmobiling. We'd all arrived together. We'd coordinate our flights and arrive at the
airport there in Bozeman, Montana, and Mike would pick us up. First
thing he would do is tee upthis next song I'm gonna play for you.
It's a song by Chris Whitley calledBig Sky Country, and Mike had
(44:00):
this way. You know, youmight have a friend who has a unique
speaking style. He has a uniquespeaking voice, and Mike was one of
those guys. He actually sounded hewas almost like it was like an animated
character, but it's how he spoke. And he was one of those guys
that he was so distinct that whenyou were around him, everybody started mimicking
(44:22):
him. So the moment we'd allbe together, we'd all start talking like
Mike Mohan from the moment we'd seeeach other. And that lasted for forty
years too. We'd drop into thatvocal phrasing the moment any of us are
together, and that's one of Mike'slegacies. Well, if I was to
(44:43):
introduce this song as Mike Mohan inthat voice would say, he'd say something
like jeef Ella's glad you're here.I'm gonna tee up Big Sky Country,
because you know we're in beautiful Bozeman, Montana. God's Country doesn't get any
better than this. You beach boys, Well, welcome to God's Country,
Paradise Valley. And so it wouldbegin. He would play Big Sky Country,
(45:07):
which of course is an homage toMontana, and we'd begin our trip
(45:34):
now when this is over, overand through and all them changes hill come
in past. I want hum medull in the big skag Country. I
just want to approve Mama looking lesshim black Hellelujah in the big skag Chee,
(46:00):
just like forever and ever is wild, begin in over in the Big
Sky Country, a be kissing time. You see time, good bye,
(46:21):
I got do what's hopping done?Let me to your word, because you
help my number, you help myname, You help my body through the
thick and thin on a bear,he bruises in the Big Sky Country,
(46:44):
spread out and love you, loveyou in your sickard skin like hell.
Lie. You're in a big Skycountry just like forever and a very is
wild. To begin it away inthe bee skyuty be kissing time, He
(47:07):
said, goodbye, held it girl, and razzle, Bama crist got lights
on all those one held it,Meloria, I had it. No y'all
onna come around, wants see yourface such as watch them lovers, I
(47:35):
m perine washing lovers while they sleeping, slide see gonna prove it you in
a big sky country, they justgoneacruil it while the whole world collides.
Get like he hitting a big skycountry, just like for it ever and
(48:00):
I ever miss wild. We getin a world in the bea sky country,
be kissing time, be kissing time. Goodbye media me girl in a
big sky conchy, be just likelove and love be when we held over
(48:27):
till the big sky conty. Webe kissing time, kissing kissing time die,
big sky country be sky conty. You know, if you've never been
(49:40):
to Montana, you can't really imaginetruly how beautiful it is. As I
do this tribute to my buddy MikeMohan the past two days ago, he
bought a place. He bought landon a forty acre plot next to Meg
Ryan and Randy Quaid, who rememberwho were married at the time, and
bump into them in the local barsand all that. But it was a
(50:02):
beautiful in Paradise Valley, just abeautiful piece of land, and he and
a buddy, Harold Grissmore, builta beautiful log cabin, three story log
cabin, and it was just anamazing place to go to and hang out
with your buddies. Now, whenwe first started taking those trips, as
I said, we'd we'd ski andthen we'd snowmobile and we'd ski. Well,
the first time we snowmobile was actuallywith a much bigger group there that
(50:27):
had come in friends from both Mikeand Harold, and we went to a
gardener gardener a Montana, which isright outside the entrance to Yellowstone, and
we all rented snowmobiles that first time, and there were probably fifteen of us,
you know, in a slow line, you know, and there wasn't
much snow and we're kind of goingover mud and dirt, you know.
Was an inauspicious beginning to snowmobiling, and eventually, over the years that developed
(50:52):
into a real passion for it.We'd instead go up to Cook City,
Montana, out the northern end ofYellowstone, and Cook City has serious,
serious snowmobiling, very deep snow, very much the back country, and we'd
rent these really high powered snowmobiles. There's too many stories to tell about how
(51:12):
those trips went. But I goback to that first trip where we were
in, as I said, Gardner, Montana, and we were all coming
out of this old two story motel, getting ready to get in our cars
and head on out. And thefirst time I ever heard this song was
watching all these guys come out ofthe hotel rooms as we gathered to go
(51:34):
snowmobiling that morning. I had neverheard this song until that morning. But
as many songs do, right, they stick with you an image a time,
in this case a very specific imageof a bunch of friends walking out
of a hotel in Gardner, Montana, the very first time I heard Mary
(51:54):
Jane's last dance. She grew upin the Indian of town, had a
(52:22):
good looking mine never was around, but she grew up tall, and she
grew up right with the Indiana boys. On the Indiana night she moved down
(52:43):
here. The age eighteen drew theboys away. It was more than the
eighteen. I was introdusday, andwe bore started moving, she said,
A diggy babybody got to keep moving, keep moving on less sands with Mary
(53:06):
Jane one more time to give thething I feel some three minute and up
tire of this town. A.Yeah, I don't know. I've been
(53:40):
tool. You never slowed down,You never grew tire to screwing up,
tied to going down and tied tomyself. Tidy this town? Oh my
mind? Oh hell yea honey, food on that party dress, Buy me
in drink, same miss o,take me as a come a case,
(54:00):
stay long. Masskets with Marry Jack. One more time to give the thing
I feel. Summer greeting. Hitup tire this time again. There's pigeons
(54:46):
down on Market Square. She's standingin her underwear looking down from a hotel
room and night ball will be comingsoon. On my mind? Oh hell
yes, you got to put onthat party dress. It was too cold
to cry when I woke up aloneand here for last nuvel, I walked
(55:07):
to the road. Lassans with MarryJack. One more time to give the
thing I feel s quite been init up time of this town again.
(56:00):
Yeah. If you love that songlike I do, hopefully you have a
(56:20):
little attachment to it, maybe atime, a place, or a person
as I do. There with thatmorning for the and you know the first
time I heard that song We're like, what the heck is that? Play
it again? Right? So Imean that that became firmly embedded and became
part of the lexicon of the boystrips up to Montana. One song I
Want to Play for You next wasmaybe the biggest song in that lexicon.
(56:43):
And it's kind of funny because youknow, you think, you know,
at the time, twelve fifteen whatever, middle aged guys getting together to kind
of whoop it up over a longfive day get together. You know that
they may not attach so heavily toh to kind of an edgy song by
a female Canadian singer, but wedid. We all fell in love with
(57:05):
Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morris setand we would play that album everywhere we
went. We would drive it typicallyin two or three cars, you know,
kind of a caravan, and wemade it work and we were We
would play Jagged Little Pill constantly. So the next song I'm going to play
for you now, as I dotwo more songs on this tribute to my
buddy Mike Mohan who passed, isthis song now you ought to know?
(57:30):
This was the one song out ofall of them that we probably sang along
to the hardest. There's a coupleof lines in there that are off color.
One. In fact, I wastelling my friend Jeff this morning,
I've actually got to hit the mutebutton at just the right time or this
station's in trouble, so we'll seehow dextrous I am here. But this
(57:52):
song, more than any other, brings about about the joy and the silliness
and the out of control. Wellthis we would turn this up to eleven.
And believe me, you don't needto hear twelve middle aged guys singing
along to Atlantis Morrisset because she doesn'tfind by herself. But it's exactly what
would happen. This is you oughtto know by Atlantis Morrisset came out of
(58:14):
nineteen ninety five, so gosh, thirty years ago. And in this I'll
never I'll never hear this song withoutthinking of my good buddy Mike Mohd.
I want you to know, I'mbaby, I wish nothing but best for
(58:39):
you both. I'm all the versionof me. She poverted like me would
she'd go down on you money andshe have your babies. I'm sure mother
(59:02):
to make up for you. Whyno, and different takes me till you
dight, but still a night andnot to remind im as you twenty nowhere,
(59:27):
it's not fair to de night whereyou make you well? These things
peace for Christ as well. Ithought ye to know, didn't you fucket
(59:58):
about me? Used to do?Listen tis I hate to FuG In the
middle of dinner there was a snapin the face. How quickly I was
replaced, and I had thinking themeat card telling time but at night do
(01:00:36):
a mine? I'm twenty. Well, it's my bed to the night a
chicken to make you because I shoulddie and she'll die every time my neck
(01:01:42):
down? Someone what can you feelit? Well? When you away away?
(01:02:30):
All right? You know I gottato share you with you guys the
story here. I told you Ineeded to go offline right at that one
moment. If you know that song, you know obviously know why. And
of course we are very careful hereat the station not to send anything out
over the airwaves that is inappropriate. It's very important to this station to play
by the rules, and Tyler andAlyssa and all the management here do a
(01:02:53):
wonderful job truly of ensuring we do. Now that's said, I was waiting
for that hard and the song couldcome up, and I had my fingers
poised over the buttons. I'm waiting, I'm waiting. I know the song,
well, I'm way I know exactly, I'm way here it comes,
here, it comes. And therewas a little voice in my head,
and I don't know where it camefrom, said, dude, you're hanging
(01:03:15):
over the wrong buttons. And forwhat it's worth, there's different sources of
music that we play here at thestadi at the station, and I was
actually poised to mute a bunch ofbuttons that we're not playing at that time.
So if I hadn't had that littlevoice, and I'm gonna say that
(01:03:35):
was my buddy Mike saying, yeah, yeah, you're being a funny boy
now, but you definitely don't wantto screw this up. And literally,
with like three seconds, I wentoh, and I came over to the
right button, and I know Inailed that and missed broadcasting what I was
not supposed to broadcast, so shore, but you have no idea, have
no idea how close I came totragedy, particularly after saying, Hey,
(01:04:00):
I'm about to broadcast this song andif I don't get it right, we
got problems. You know, Hey, why don't I bring a little more
attention to myself before I screw itup? Oh my goodness, that is
live radio, live independent radio herein Laguna Beach. And I have one
more song I'm gonna play for younow for this tribute to my friend Mike
Mohanna. He will be missed. And like I mentioned, with the other
(01:04:24):
core group of guys, I'm talkingabout Jeff Beale and Michael Schmidt and Greg
sue Lage and Jeff Itall and HaroldGrissmore and the list goes on. And
all these good guys are brothers. And certainly we were brothers, and we
were together, which wasn't often enough. And I'm gonna leave you now on
this tribute to my good friend Mikeby this song by Dire Straits, the
(01:04:47):
title track off the Brothers in Armsalbum Rest in Peace, Brother And what

That's so it goes off the Jesusof Cool album Love. That song always
(01:14:31):
puts a smile on my face. The next song I'm gonna play for you
is we get Back For the lastforty five minutes of today's show is a
request actually a request that came infrom a good buddy of mine here in
Laguna Beach, Scotti te up inthe top of the world with me up
there, and uh, he's partof a group that I hang out with
quite a bit. We call ourselvesa fire Pit Crew because we, uh
(01:14:54):
what, we get together by afire pit and we talk and and other
things. And uh, let's justsay it's a great way for men of
a certain age to get together andsocialize. I'll leave it at that.
But Scott left me a message yesterday. Because all these guys really know their
music, are really into music. We talk about it all the time.
And he said, hey, whydon't you play a great song by Steven
(01:15:15):
Stills When he was with Manassas kindof a side project called Johnny's Garden,
and for those of you that don'tknow when, kind of at the height
of his popularity, Steven Still steppedaway from Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young and he created a band innineteen seventy two called Manassas, their blues
rock group, and they set outa double album called Manassas. Not surprisingly
(01:15:42):
and just an amazing band. Ofcourse, as I mentioned, Steven Stills,
but also Chris Hillman and Dallas Taylor, and Al Perkins and Joe La
La on percussion. My gosh, just an amazing band. And this song
is called Johnny's Garden off that originaldebut double album, So to Scotti t
this goes out to you, brother, Johnny's Garden, Stephen Stills and Manassas.
(01:16:18):
There's a place I can get into, whether I'm safe from the city
bruise and it's green and it's quietagain. All the trouble ross, I
(01:16:40):
had to bargain, and I'll doanything I love to do, cut my
hands and shine my sheet, keepon singing the bruise. If I can't
stay here, Johnny's darting as theswift bird lies over the grasses. It
(01:17:12):
thing now and then to take hisbreakfast. Let's come and go, and
I travel. But I can watchthat bird and un rival, and I'll
do anything I got to do,cutting my head, charge you keep on
(01:17:36):
singing the beat, keep fucking stayhere. And Johnny's Guarden with his love
(01:17:57):
and his caring. He puts hislife into beauty's share then and his children
are his flowers, and that giveme peace and wid I and I even
anything I got to do, cuttingmy hand, child can keep on saying
(01:18:25):
the US a podcast, stay hereJohnny's Garden. What a great vibe that
(01:18:46):
has, doesn't it? My goodness? Johnny's Garden sung by Stephen Stills.
Of course, you know there Imentioned I've been playing songs kind of scattered
throughout today's show that are evocative ofParis. Can't wait to get I want
to actually fly out this afternoon. And one thing I love about being in
Europe is sometimes you just wander inthe streets at night, you know,
and there's street artists, musical artists. Very often. I love it when
(01:19:11):
you stumble upon a gypsy jazz artistwho's just out there playing beautiful music that
sounds like this. All right. That's an artist called Romaine, just a
(01:22:10):
solo artist and obviously a gypsy jazzartist to boot. Oh man. I
can't wait to be wandering the streetsof Paris late at night and hopefully,
hopefully stumbling upon If you wander longenough, you will stumble onto an artist
playing music like that out there onthe streets. All right. You know,
it's been a long time since I'veplayed a little Aerosmith on this show.
(01:22:32):
And let's go back to their veryfirst albuct It was recorded in seventy
three. It was released in seventyfive, and of course it had the
big hit dream on But again,as I said, we don't always play
the hits here on the Coast HighwayShuffle Show. This is a great song
on that album from all the wayback on that debut. This is called
(01:22:54):
one way Street. And when you'reon the Coast Highway, you better be
going both ways here for you nowon k xcep hel you look at yonder.
(01:23:45):
What's that? I see that oldlong This is gonna coming after me.
I'm alt. You told me I'mout of town. I'm on the
house and know what I was hangingon around Tennis name. Don't haste in
your time. You'll keep coming around. I'm here in the same time and
die now, God say to me, you take what's going for you.
(01:24:11):
Now take my breathing. Comes ladythat's been so highly lacks meat. He
answer come here, y'all hay answerone basy and I'm down here play.
I'm all knew I page your ladycome to my suntime. So damn cha,
(01:24:39):
she say she love tone. I'mcome to say I'm one thing,
So I satuate you there's one wastingday, and I'm a knew what it's
such a penny, honey, I'mdancing call you becomes a lady that's been
so high, la and go aheadthe one last we away know what I'm
(01:25:16):
talking about. I see that paton the hand. I'm gonna give me
some of that's nothing at alver here. I never showed us how may say,
(01:25:47):
lad and know another spake. It'son the level. But two always
looking like a man the le don'tsay I talk. The two's talk for
God and touch your much to rouseyour frood's running. You know I work
so high, keep it alid nowall have on you with nothing about time
(01:26:12):
because of leland that's been so high. No mans, me and hon y'all
hand to one, lasting around meall the way, and so how now
(01:28:05):
never one see it. And Ialready do feel that I got my member
within me, I said, lastingpoling U body on me, I said,
(01:29:00):
hand like one, and you're pullingup. I had left three hears.
When you're pulling up by me,I hand one. When I can
by me, I can well letme I forget myself back on my feet.
(01:29:31):
I am not saying ever pulling everbodyoh, all right. That is
(01:30:01):
Aero Smith there with One Way Street. They're on their farewell tour right now,
and they just announced yesterday they're cancelingsome dates because of some health issues
there by Steven Tyler, lead singer. And when you hear when you hear
those vocals, you know that yousing like that, you're going to run
into trouble at some point. Butyeah, they are rapping things up,
(01:30:21):
and you know, who knows ifthat's going to be it or if they
do like a lot of bands, and go out on a farewell tour,
then two years later do it again. We'll see, all right. Next
up is any Lenox of course ofthe rhythmics, but I love this song.
She put out an album in ninetyfive called Medusa. It was her
second solo album. It's an albumcompletely of covers, so every song on
(01:30:45):
it you'll likely recognize, and ithas songs on it like take Me to
the River by the Great al Greenand a Wider Shade of Pale of course
by Procol Harem, and goes onand on. But one of the songs
that really spoke to me is thesong that I'm Gonna play for you now.
This was originally, of course, done by the great Neil Young.
(01:31:06):
And this is a song called Don'tlet It Bring You down. This is
Anie Lennox covering the great Neil Younghere on chax FM. Line by the
(01:31:32):
side of the road with the loris rung by blue see from the way
of the load and the building screamedthe sky cool on upping on the bonny
the door, the barling baby fliesden my line by the side of the
(01:31:54):
road with the daylight in his eyes. Don let it breathe. It's only
castles n FA's almos turning and youwill come around the larne n did you
(01:32:25):
the land of the night where thehandside is high. Come on down to
the riverside and you can be onthe stairs. Will last passion can can
kill the silence? More whip andline in the corner in the lane.
(01:32:46):
Then you're walking all along. Anybreak down, it's only castles fine so
ons turning. You will come mind, don't let it bring you down.
(01:33:16):
It solely Causton's burning find soul, who's sturdy, little color by the side
of the room with the yes fromthe mine. Don't see me from the
(01:33:42):
way to the lone in the buildingsstay in the sky going do my mom
the side of your own with theDan sides. Let it bring down.
It's Ally Castles time, So Long'stime. Don't let it bring you down.
(01:34:30):
It's Solly Castles, piny fine soulstime, and you will come Wow.
Find someone who's hurting and you willcome around. That's Any Lennox covering
(01:34:55):
Neil Young here on the Coast HighwayShuffle Show. We've only got about twenty
minutes, twenty five minutes left,so let me try to squeeze in as
much music as I can for you. This next song I'm gonna play actually
crosses two topics that we've been discussinghere over the last couple of weeks.
One is Jimmy Buffett, of course, who did a tribute to him a
couple of weeks ago on his passing. You know, Jimmy Buffett was loved
(01:35:16):
in Laguna Beach. It's amazing howmany people I know that knew him and
knew him from Laguna Beach. Hecame here quite a bit. Mark Christie
probably most notably, who runs andyou know, manages the ranch. And
I told stories about Buffett and allthat, and you know, we will
continue to honor Jimmy Buffett and hismusic going forward. But I thought i'd
(01:35:39):
play this song now because we're allthinking about Jimmy Buffett and this song I
didn't play during the tribute, butit speaks to me because well, I
mean the title of the song ashe went to Paris, and as I've
shared during this show, I'll beout the next two weeks on my own
journey there, and so you knowit's very timely. But unlike myself who's
(01:36:00):
going on vacation, Jimmy Buffett istalking about his father and he's talking about
going there as a soldier in WorldWar Two and impacted it had and how
ultimately you hear the line in thesong he had a son named jim and
of course Jimmy Buffett is referring tohimself. So this is a very I
won't say autobiographical because it's not aboutJimmy, but it is about his father
(01:36:24):
and to all the fathers out thereand to all the fathers we no longer
have. It's a very sweet andtouching song. This is he went to
Paris, Jimmy Buffett here on theCoast Highway Shuffle Show. He went to
(01:36:55):
Paris looking for answerious questions. Itbother and so he was impressive, young,
annagressive, saving the world on hisown. But the warm summer breeze
is French wines and cheeses put hisambition at bay. The summers and winters
(01:37:25):
scattered like splinters, and four orfive years slipped away. He went to
England, played the pianoo, andmarried and actress named Kim. They had
a fine life. She was agood wife and bore him a young son
(01:37:46):
named Jim Dolla the answers and Dollahthe question locked in as added one day
because he liked quiet, clean countryliving. In twenty four years slipped away
(01:38:27):
well. The water took his baby, bombs killed his lady, and left
him with only one eye. Hisbody was battered, his whole world was
shattered. All he could do wasjust crying while the tears weren't falling,
and he was recalled and answers henever found. So he hopped down afraid
(01:38:56):
of skinny the old shin and lefthim limp without a sound. Now he
lives in the eyes fishes, pilothis drinks, his green label, each
(01:39:17):
day, writing his men ons, losing his hearing, but he don't care
what most people say through eighty sixyears or prepet you emotion. If he
likes you, he'll smile. He'llsay, Jim some of his magic,
(01:39:42):
some of his tragic, But Ihad a good life all the way.
He went to Paris looking for answersquestions that bothered him. So this is
(01:40:05):
Jennifer Warrens. Don't make me overnow that I can't make it with that.
(01:40:29):
Don't make me over. I wouldn'tchange something about you. Don't because
things I say, the things Ido. Just love me with all my
fault. Where did I love youI'm making Don't make me over now that
(01:41:02):
I do anything before. Don't makeme over now that you don't. Why
don't you see me inside your auntand tell me change and always in my
(01:41:28):
mind side by a roll, Ibeg it. Don't make me over.
Don't make me over now that you'vegot me, and don't command except that
(01:41:56):
what step the thing, excepting theway extend the mother thing. Just take
(01:42:35):
me inside your eye and have totake and always be by my side by.
I'll beg you don't bake me over. Don't bake me up to man
(01:43:10):
except except the things that I except, except the way you have all right,
(01:44:20):
that is Jennifer Warrens with Don't MakeMe Over. Of course you may
know that that was a song writtenby Burt Backrack and Held David, and
listeners of this show know that Iabsolutely I am a wonk for Bert Backrack
and Held David. I you know, I just love their music. And
that was originally a song that wasreleased on her debut album by the great
(01:44:43):
Diane Warwick back in nineteen sixty two, but fifteen years later, Jennifer Warrens
covered it on her album called Shotthrough the Heart and again the song don't
Make Me Over. Here on kx FM. Speaking of covers, I'm
going to play another one for youright now. You may recall in the
eighties a song that was very popularat the time. It was called Tainted
(01:45:08):
Love. And of course Tainted Lovewas a big hit, and I want
to look it up right now,say yeah, eighty one by the band's
Soft Cell. And but maybe youdidn't know that the soft Sell version of
Tainted Love was a cover that itwas originally released by an artist in nineteen
sixty four by the name of GloriaJones. And this is what I'm going
(01:45:31):
to play for you now. Thisis Gloria Jones with the original Tainted Love
here on the Coast Highway Shuffle show, Painted job. We share seems to
(01:46:01):
going away and I love not rightfor I toss and turn again, sleep
at night once I reaching change andget it. I give you a girl,
can't give you take I give letnot love. Now. I know
(01:46:31):
I've got to run away. I'vegot to get away. Don't really walk
in it. Go on me inthe bay. Things right, you need
someone to hold you tight, andthe thing love is to play well.
I'm sorry I don't say that wayfor my reaching from you. Change love,
(01:47:01):
I give you the girl, can'tgive you chake, I keep last
Taylor, Dan, I don't tousaplease. I cannot stand the way you
chea. I know you heard me, so if I do not pack your
(01:47:24):
face and go Dan, changing lovechanging talking about the tailor love, talking
about the changing love, talking aboutthe danger love, talking about the change
(01:47:48):
changing love, Tan tanging love.Hello. But I want to clarify something
(01:48:13):
here, because that, of courseis tainted love. That is Gloria Jones.
But let me make something real clear. The version I just played for
you there by Gloria Jones was nother original hit from nineteen sixty four.
It was a rerecording she made innineteen seventy six. So if that sounded
kind of hip for nineteen sixty four, well it was. She had the
(01:48:33):
original hit in sixty four and thenshe re recorded it re released it in
nineteen seventy six. One thing that'sinteresting about that second recording, or the
one I just played for you, that had that more kind of modern sound
to it than you would have heardin sixty four is because she it was
recorded under the production support of herboyfriend at the time, Mark Bolan.
(01:48:59):
And if you know that name,Mark Boland was t Rex So the great
Gloria Jones. That's her second versionfrom nineteen seventy six of her original hit
from nineteen sixty four, and ofcourse five years after that, soft Sell
recorded it in nineteen eighty one.So little bit of musical roadmap history for
(01:49:21):
you. And that's all good. You know. Thinking about her makes me
think about the great artist Al Green. I frankly was not aware if that
was Al living, was he not? Well, he's still out there,
the great Al Green. In fact, he just released a single yep,
it's an album. It's actually notan album. It's called I guess it's
an EP. But in any event, perfect Day is the name of the
(01:49:44):
single, and this is al Greennine in twenty twenty three. This is
a current hit by the great wellcurrent release rather by the great al Green.
(01:50:08):
Just a perfect day dream wid hangin the park. Then later when
it start, we go a farjust a perfect day, feed out of
(01:50:35):
moons and zoom. Then later I'llmove to and we go a hard perfect
day. I'm glad I stan feelingsuch perfect day. You just keep me,
(01:51:13):
You just keep me holy, justa perfect day. Problems all left
alone, weekends on our all,it's such fun, just a perfect day.
(01:51:50):
You made me forget myself. Ithought I was somebody else, even
someone you jes every day on theway I spent it with such every day.
(01:52:23):
You just keep me hone, You'lljust keep me, honey. You
(01:52:53):
are read just what you sold, don't you? Hey, you're just what
joy don't you know you're a read? Just what you should? You have
(01:53:27):
a read? Just what you don'tyou know? You're just what Jue I
should point out, by the way, and I apologize for not announcing it
earlier. That is our green, but he's covering that wonderful song perfect Day,
(01:53:51):
made famous in nineteen seventy two byLou Reid. All Right, we
are now wrapping up this edition ofthe Coast Highway Shuffle Show. I'm gonna
play, well, just a couplemore songs. This first one in the
spirit of the gypsy jazz that I'vebeen talking about. This is a song
by Pearl Jangle called the Mighty Engineof Rhythm. Mama, Mama, Mama,
(01:55:57):
My mom My, mom My mom. Hi. This is KXFM meteorologist
(01:58:15):
Dave Murray. Boy Our June gloomin September continues a rather thick marine layer
in place. It just doesn't wantto let go. On this Sunday,
Clouds and mist, a little bitof drizzle around into the early afternoon,
but don't expect a heck of alot of sun. We'll call it partly
to mostly cloud ease guys, aswe go through the afternoon, and it
is cool sixty nine seventy for thehigh this afternoon. Tonight, clouds dominate
(01:58:41):
a little bit of mist and drizzleafter eleven o'clock or so. Sixty two
degrees will do it for the overnight. Law On Monday clouds miss drizzle in
the morning, a slow process, but going partly sunny during the afternoon on
Monday, and breezy sixty nine degrees. Cool weather in place most of the
week ahead. Daytime highs in theupper sixties and nighttime lows in the fifties.
(01:59:03):
Boy, oh boy, what happenedto September? That's our weather on
meteorologist Dave Murray for KXFM Laguna Beach. All right, Dave Burry, thank
you so much, and that bringsus to the end of this edition of
the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. Iwant to thank you all for listening.
I've received so many very nice, very kind, thoughtful texts about the show
