(01:07):
you to another edition of the CoastHighway Shuffle Show. My name is Steve
Reid, and I am proud andhonored and grateful to be here on the
airwaves with you Sunday mornings at tenam for this thing that I call the
Coast Highway Shuffle Show. We've beenat this for eleven years now. The
(01:27):
station hand me and this show elevenyears of playing music for you and loven
every minute of it here in ourbeautiful little town of Laguna Beach. Today's
show is going to be a specialshow for me, a different show for
me. What I'm going to dotoday is simply focus on my gratitude,
(01:53):
my gratitude for this station, mygratitude for the opportunity to be here and
play music for you as a DJLaguna Beach. My goodness, but my
gratitude for so much else that Ihave in this life, and every once
in a while, we just reallyhave to stop and recognize that. And
(02:14):
this station has been something I've beengrateful for for the last eleven years.
And today I'm going to talk aboutthat gratitude, and I'm going to share
music with you as I always do, for the next two hours on this
edition of the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. The song playing in the background,
(02:35):
in fact, it's called a bed. It's the music that plays while we
talk over it. It's a reflectionof gratitude that I have for an artist
that I interviewed here and met faceto face and hung out in the green
room down at the Coach House,an artist, a songwriter by the name
of Jimmy Webb, an amazing songwriterwho wrote so many amazing songs. And
(02:58):
I've had his song here, whichitalLineman him playing the piano. I've used
it as a bed many times tointro this show. But it's there also
a reflection of just the amazing peopleI've met in the industry, good people,
talented people, generous people, kindpeople. Jimmy Webb is a perfect
example of that, and I'm sograteful I had the chance to meet him,
(03:22):
to talk to him, to hangout with him, and to have
him call me a friend. Ialso will play another song as a background
bed this morning before we get intothe real meat of the show and the
songs that we're gonna play for thenext bed song I'm gonna play after this
(03:45):
Jimmy Webb song Ends is one thatI've also played throughout the years, significantly
by a Polish artist that you've probablynever heard of. His name is Abel
corse Enniowski. Abel Corzeniowski, andhe's an amazing composer. He mainly writes
(04:09):
for films in theater, but healso wrote for a show called Penny Dreadful.
And there's a song that he wrotefor that show that I've used many
times and you're about to hear itright now, and it's called Ethan's Waltz.
It's a beautiful short waltz, butthat name and that mood struck me
(04:30):
the first time I heard it,and I've played it many times as a
bed for this show in honor ofmy boy, my late son, Ethan
James Reid. This is that song, Ethan's Waltz. Cook Cook cook cook
(05:17):
cock cock cock cock cock co allright, that is called again Ethan's Waltz.
(06:11):
And very often I would start ashow with that is my background bed,
and it would just sort of fillmy heart with gratitude and loving thoughts,
and it was a wonderful way tothink of that boy. And so
that's what I would always do tostart a show, play a couple of
beds in the background, and introducethe songs. The first song I'm gonna
play for you today, I'm pickedin a gratitude for the amazing studio we
(06:38):
have here in this amazing town. We're at the Pearl Street Studios here in
Laguna Beach, right on the cornerof Coast Highway and Pearl Street. We're
right up from the ocean. Youcan hear the waves often and you can
smell the salty air. It's justamazing. And we're in this beautiful town
of Laguna Beach. How fortunate canyou be to play music on the radio
(07:01):
to your hometown, to your lovingfriends and family in this town. And
it's a beautiful day here today, this Sunday, as it is most Sundays
in Laguna Beach. So the songI picked for you is a song by
an artist whose stage name was DanielBoone. Yep, you heard that right.
His board name was Peter Charles Green, and he passed away just in
(07:24):
January of this year. He wasa one hit wonder under the stage name
Daniel Boone, and he played thissong as that one hit. This is
Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone Here onthe Coast Highway Shuffle show Sun name mona,
(07:53):
Thank God, take welcome, lookon you the vaulted. I've got
someone waiting for me. And whenI see now what you say, Hey,
(08:13):
hey, Hey, it's a beautivaultedHi, Hi, high beautiful Sunday.
This is mine, my my beautifulday. When you sad, sad,
(08:37):
sad, sad that you love me, Oh mine mine, My head's
a beautifulting birds are singing and youby my side. Stick. Don't call
man before a ride. He head, head, it's a beauty fault.
(09:07):
You'll drive along man, following thesun making the Sunday go on on on
head head heads, a beautifaulting highhigh high, beautiful Sunday. This is
(09:31):
my my, my beautiful bad. When you say sad sad, say that
you love of me over mind myMind's a beautifulting high high, beautiful side.
(10:01):
This is mon beautiful day, SunSun Sun Your Oh, that's a
beautiful by beautiful song. Ah right, what a beautiful little song? That
(10:33):
is right, beautiful beautiful Sunday. Here on KXFM, We're gonna start going
right into the music that I've pickedfor today, and well, eagle eared
listeners will figure stuff out and I'lljust leave it at that. But the
first song I'm gonna play is bythe band beck the amazing artist beck Off
his Morning Phase album. This cameout in twenty fourteen, and the name
(10:56):
of this song by Beck for younow Here on the Coast Higway Shuffle Show
is a great cut called say Goodbye. Here we go. You see the
sleep the rests upon the quiet streetto stand in on? Is it to
(11:22):
go away? Try again? Someother days? It's these words use to
say goodbye? Bes On words useto say goodbye. Bones, crack,
(11:56):
curtains drawn, ooma back, theshoes gone somewhere else. I do not
know the time will tell and Iwill go. These are words us to
say goodbye. These are the worldsweetes to say bye. I will wait
(13:07):
to take a turn, sort itout let it burn, limpy out,
empty drawer in my pockets. There'snothing wrong means of the world. You
to say goodbye bes off words sweetyou say good bade all right? That
(14:24):
is Beck with say Goodbye off theMorning Phase album here on KXFM. The
next song I'm gonna play because it'sgoing to be all about the music today.
As a band by the name ofDelametria, I've played it many times
in the show, but this songI'm playing today in honor and ingratitude,
since this show is all about gratitudetoday, ingratitude of a friend that I
(14:45):
met here at the radio station, and his name is Martin Hanlin, and
he did a show for many manyyears that followed this one called The Real
McCoy. And Martin was going throughsome tough times of his own as at
the same time I was going througha may you know, just difficult loss.
(15:05):
And we saw that pain in eachother and we said let's go out
and have a cup of coffee. And that was where our friendship started.
And he's a dear friend and remainsa dear friend. We have breakfast fairly
frequently, probably month, once amonth. One of the things that he
really instilled in me was a lovefor all. I'm Scottish and he's really
(15:26):
Scottish. Can barely understand the man, although I've learned how to. I've
learned how to listen to him overthe years. But we'd always joke about
how many amazing artists were Scottish andDelamitri is a Scottish band, and whether
it was Delemitrie or you know,it was so many other bands, Elbow,
and it would go on and on, and you know, he is
(15:48):
just a an encyclopedia of music, but especially all things Glasgow. So in
honor of my friendship that I wouldn'thave had without being here at this station
with this young man. Well he'smy age, so he's not a young
man, but you know it's ait's an affectionate term for my friend.
(16:10):
This is a song by Delementrie offtheir second album, and the name of
this song is kiss this Thing GoodbyeA wat to Freak. It seems like
(16:38):
weeksto to be babe man without thatlook of this taste, I don't know
why you a little bit change andwhat I've seen that and your baby all
those times limps will kiss times tellinglies. My son I built miss like
(17:07):
that kill y'all. Let's to comeon. Let's cash this stinger. Let's
cars this stingers. I song tellsyou will will together, but every fingers
(17:36):
telling that one and I know youfeel exactly this scene with still carry on
filed by the window. Watch me'scoscle and I tell myself that I'm good
(17:57):
thing them last time nights way,Let's cress this thing. Let's creis this
thinger now fumes foul sunrise and watchingthe light faith way tonight. That'll open
(18:52):
the door. You'll stand your way. Let's this thing call me. Let's
kiss this thing to the south thisthing. Let's care the stairs thing good
(19:52):
bye? All right? That isDelementrie out of Glasgow, Scotland, with
(20:49):
kiss this thing goodbye, going upto my good buddy Martin Handlin. As
I mentioned earlier, this is ashow today all about gratitude. And I
have so much gratitude that I feeland I'm so fortunate to have such a
life where I can feel that waytowards so many people. And the next
person I want to really acknowledge andshare my gratitude with is a buddy of
(21:15):
mine named Steve Richards down the Coastto Little Ways. Steve's one of those
guys that every single show I've donewith rare exception, and I only say
rare exception because I can't think ofone. But I'm sure he was on
vacation somewhere sometime. He's got awonderful life, and he's got a beautiful
wife, Paula, and he andI were co workers before I retired a
(21:38):
number of years ago, now fiveyears ago, and just a great buddy,
great friend, an amazing coworker tohave. You're lucky when you have
someone in your life at work thatyou can have so much fun with and
yet learn so much from. Justan amazing guy. And I acknowledge him
because after every single show, I'dbe driving home out, you know,
(22:00):
leaving the station, and Steve wouldsend me a text every show, Hey,
great show, I really like thatsong. Hey I'm going to look
up that artist that you mentioned. He was just as consistent as the sun
rise, and he always let meknow he was there, and that was
(22:21):
tremendously appreciated. And so I wantto I want to acknowledge my gratitude towards
Steve Richards, and I'm going toplay by the way. We would always
go back and forth about certain bands. He was the one that really turned
me on to my band, theMavericks. You hear me play them a
lot, I see them. Infact, my beautiful wife Stevie, and
I are going to fly to Nashvilleon the first weekend of December to see
(22:42):
the Mavericks play at the Ryman Auditorium. That would have happened without Steve Richards.
We would go back and forth aboutour passion for the Jayhawks. Again,
just a lot of fun. SoI really want to acknowledge that.
And I'm going to play this songfor Steve. This is by father John
Misty and this is a song offhis Chloe and the Next twentieth Century album.
(23:08):
This is a song called Goodbye misterBlue to my good buddy Steve Richards.
Thank you, my friend. Thismay be the last time, last
(23:32):
time I put on my shoes,go down to the corner by the damn
cat. The expensive food that turkeyshangor is about the only thing left of
(23:56):
me. And you mm hmmm, early this morning started making sounds insane.
Don't the last time come too soon? One down, eight to go?
(24:18):
But it's no less true, don'tthe last time come to soon. M
m hmmm, This may be thelast time, last time I get out
(25:00):
of there. Good coffee on.Try your words to show some initiative.
We used to lay around here laughing. What these freaks out there were trying?
(25:33):
What's wasting time if not throwing itaway on work? When the last
time comes so soon? Missed theblue dyed in mouths looking they could.
Don't the last time come too soon? Loves always come and leave here.
(25:57):
Don't matter what they say. Youonly know what it is once it's gone
away. This may be the lasttime, last time, I may you
(26:51):
m Do you swear it's not thecat? You don't have to answer that.
I'll just make dude. But maybeif he'd gone soon and could have
brought us back together last June mhmmm. When the last time was our
(27:19):
last time? Be follow me?Last time was our last time? Would
have told you that the last timecomes too soon? When the last time
(27:47):
was our last time, should havetold you that last time comes too soon.
(28:11):
That's good bye, mister Blue.My father John Misty. That song,
by the way, was contributed bymy boy Connor by Sea when he
did a show with me did anumber of shows with me, and as
I said, I send that outto my buddy Steve Richards. You know,
thinking about Connor, I can't reallyget to I can't really go there
(28:33):
because radio is all about being ableto speak, and if I start talking
about my boy, well that justwon't work. So I'm going to keep
acknowledging some other people right now thathave been a part of this journey and
I'm very grateful for I'm going tomention two guys now that are my great
(28:53):
friends from high school down in thedesert. One of the friends is by
the name of Tom Parham. Henow lives in or in actually San Diego
County. And Matt Garshinsky, who'sdown there still in the desert doing a
wonderful job as an amazing school teacherdown in the little town of Indio.
(29:15):
Now, these guys and I aremusic geeks, right like many people are
that I'm referencing today. But theseare the guys that would always text me
during the show, in fact, many times, dozens of times during a
show, and it would get intodebates about a song I picked, or
an artist, or their particular favoriteversion of a song by an artist that
(29:38):
I was already playing, or theywould argue over why did I pick that
one or not this one or thisband's better. You know, it was
always this chatter going on behind thescenes as I would play music, and
it always came from these guys. They know their music, they love their
music. And well, we callourselves the Traveling the Brotherhood of the travel
(30:00):
Drumhead because we have a drumhead, literally a drumhead buy that was autographed by
the band Deep Purple. And anytimeone of us creates an imitation to a
concert somewhere, you bring the drumheadand the person who set up that one
show for us all to attend getsto hold onto the drumhead. Right now,
that drumhead is at Matt Garshinski's house. So with all that said,
(30:26):
I'm gonna play two songs, onefor Tom and one for Matt, and
in no particular reason, they actuallyboth fit with both. The first one
is by Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, because we're huge Steely Dan fans.
This is off the Nightfly, hisfirst solo album, and the name of
this song is called the Goodbye Look. And then we're gonna follow that immediately
(30:48):
with a great Jeff Beck song offhis Wired album called Goodbye pork Pie Hat.
These are two songs back to backwith gratitude, sent out to Tom
Parham and Matt Garshinsky here on theCoast Highway Shuffle Show. The serf was
(31:56):
easy on the day I gave thesame. I'm squiet island in the bay.
I remember the line of women allin white, the laughter around the
field bands at night, all theAmerican talk on except for two the embassmen
(32:19):
had to reach as the cock andlately a bit of action at the dock
and behind the big casino on thebeach. It's not the same. The
last night I dreamed of it alllove a dressed in gray. I had
(32:45):
to screen announcins. Yesterday we gotballin the knocking. The Colonel's standing in
the sun with a stupid fasting glassesand the gun. I know what happened.
I read the book. Otherly Idiscussed the father I just got honly
(33:07):
I DiscT the just got the youtoo, call me Judi Christ and I
(34:19):
know a billow away the mortals behinda speedy man with the shoe. As
tonight they're arranging small reception just forme. I'm a bank of I know
what happens. I I believe Ijust got the good mallow. I just
(34:44):
got the good. I believe Idiscust the good. I just got the
(36:39):
m very man man from some Idon't know. Ah. Goodbye pork Pie
(41:16):
Hat. That's the amazing Jeff Beck. What a great cut that is off
the Wired album. It's time togive you a little weather update, shall
we hi? This is KXFM meteorologistDave Murray. Our Santa Ana flow is
still in place today, but itstarts to break down tonight. The marine
on shore flow returns over the weekendand into early next week. We also
(41:38):
have a high surf advisory in effectall day today. Pretty strong swell from
the west northwest, so expect somestrong rip currents if you're headed to the
beach. Also, we've got highsurf in our future, especially late Sunday
and the Monday and again Thursday ofnext week, and it might be interested.
The full Hunter's Moon is a weekfrom Saturday, October twenty eighth,
(42:01):
So on this Friday, early cloudsgoing sunny, it's windy, it's warm,
eighty degrees for the high eighty fiveTop of the World and Moulten Meadows
Friday night, mostly clear skies, let's keep the wind up overnight sixty degrees.
Saturday morning clouds on sunshine, windyand seventy one. It's pretty good.
Cool down then on Saturday night, mostly cloudy skies, fifty eight.
(42:22):
Sunday, a lot of clouds arounda little bit of sun during the afternoon
and cooler, sixty eight degrees. That's my forecast on meteorologist Dave Murray for
KXFM. Well, go to beach. Thank you, Dave Murray. I
appreciate that. Always good to getthe weather out there accurately and so professionally.
All right, back to the CoastHighway Shuffle Show. Here. My
name again is Steve Reid, andwe are one quarter the way through today's
(42:46):
show. And this is a showthat if you've been listening, you picked
up that I'm really focusing on mygratitude. There's a lot of reasons for
that, but mostly I would saybecause we don't do it often enough,
and we have so much to begrateful for general speaking, if you're like
me, and I certainly do,and I'm really focusing on my gratitude today
(43:06):
towards those who have been associated withmy ten year here at k x FM.
And the next person I want tocall out is my good neighbor,
my good buddy, mister Brian Hurley. And Brian is truly a great neighbor.
You know. He and his lovelybride, Candice, their boys,
(43:30):
their grandkids, a big part ofthe burn Drive scene where we both live.
He lives directly across the street. So it's the kind of thing.
You know, if you go outin the morning in the boxers to pick
up the paper, you run afifty to fifty chance of someone in the
Hurley household busting you. But youknow, if you're lucky in this life,
many things come in many forms, and having great neighbors friends, I
(43:52):
mean, you know, Brian andI have become very close over the years.
He's been just a great guy,a lot of fun. We've gone
to a lot of shows together,We've hung out a lot, We've done
a lot of stuff that I can'teven really comfortably talk about on the air.
It's all legal now, but youknow, you know what I'm saying.
But in any event, he's justa great guy and he knows music.
(44:14):
And those of you that listen tothis station know that he and I
have had a show these last probablytwo months now on Thursdays, on Thursday
mornings from eight to ten, wehave another show called Shades of Gray,
and Brian has been coming up tospeed real quickly on working the board and
playing the music. He's always beenalso kind of like I mentioned earlier with
(44:35):
Steve Richards, one of those guyswho always has a comment after a show,
always picks up a song or twothat he wants to pursue and learn
more about the artists. Just aninteresting has a real interest in music and
has a good taste in music, and that's why I invited him to join
me when we had the opportunity tocreate a news show here. As I
say again on Thursday mornings. Thatshow is kind of shifting now to the
(44:59):
afternoons Thursdays from one to three, and I'm going to be out of town
here for the next couple of weeks, so Brian will be handling that ably
as a solo DJ here at thePearl Street Studios, but separate to all
the radio stuff. Brian's a goodfriend and a good man and a great
husband, father, grandfather, andso I want to call him out with
(45:22):
my appreciation of my gratitude, Andso I'm going to play a band here
that's Laguna Local. The band isHonk, of course, most famous for
Five Summer Stories. That soundtrack andthis song I'm gonna pull off that album
is called Don't Let Your Goodbye Stand. This goes out to my buddy Brian
Hurley here on the Coast Highway ShuffleShow. If your change and can't include
(45:49):
me, it was a matter oftime because I hear most regularly the young
men get no older, gross, sincere, and much too dry. I'll
understand if I can't hold you, won't share the twos all crime, But
would you steal from a dying manlove from an outstretched hand? I setch
(46:16):
no prime, then grieve me.Don't let Joe good basting, and don't
let your good bastand and don't letyour good fast hand. You can have
(46:40):
the better of me at your games, and that's your rules. I can
see the labels gladly as you'll warnfectioncools. You don't put you out tester,
then you're lying enough to be itstrue. It just won't last.
Your borrow to sweetes knee. Tellme about your red new loom, and
(47:06):
you're shopping trips to town, butdon't let conversations leave no room to turn
your head around. Then you speedfrom the dye man the from an outstretch
stands sets no pride leave me,and don't let th good bastads. Don't
(47:30):
let dro good by stairs, anddon't let drop good by stand. There's
a few more hours with me.The one's our game with you. Put
(47:50):
your wayne and footsteps sadly in thecage's change his views. But if you
steal from the dice man from outstretchedhand, I've said, don't pry a
band breed be and know that jokegood bye stand, And do't that Joe
(48:12):
good bye stand, And don't thatJoe good bye stand. Ah gotta love
the band Hank here in Laguna Beach. Everybody knows them, and there's you
(48:36):
know, Steve and his wife Bethstill play here in town at a variety
of venues, still so amazingly talented. But again, don't let your goodbye
stand. The next song I'm gonnaplay with Gratitude is going to be directed
to a few people here in townthat I did not know before I took
this role listeners, but who becamefriends of mine over the years, and
(49:00):
I just want to acknowledge them beforewe play this next cut. I'm referring
to Andy Sholmes, who's just agreat mountain biker here in town, and
his lovely wife. I want tocall out Pamela Knutson, the cat Lady
of the Canyon and just a dear, sweet woman and a dear friend.
And Rick Jorgenson, I want tocall out who He and I became friends
(49:22):
talking about music down at Mark Christie'sevents. And Rick Jorgensen now has a
show here on Fridays at one PMcalled Under the Covers. So these are
friends that I've made here, separateto at the station or separate to,
you know, having brought into theradio show environment that I've known all my
(49:44):
life or worked with, etc. These are people that just really became dear
friends, and just because they're goodpeople, and you know, you really
have to call it. It's notoften in life, especially at my age,
you get to make new friends. And I'm grateful for all three of
those people I just mentioned, soin partly and tip because of the fact
(50:04):
that, uh, you know,Rick does have a show about covers.
This next song I'm going to sendto those three individuals. This is Isaac
Hayes doing a cover of the JacksonFives. Never can say goodbye. I
love it here on the Coast HighwayShuffle Show. I never can goodbye,
(50:55):
No, no, no no,I never can say goodbye, even though
the pen and pint seem to botherme. Whiever I go, though I
try and tried to hide my flinas they always showed me. And then
(51:19):
you try to sleave and meet atalways hat shall be wind in it.
So never can say goodbye, andno, no, no, no no,
(51:40):
I never can say goodbye. Everytime I think I've had innoves not
here long ago, another various spacevibration and in piercing me like you the
corner, it says the s youknow you love her more, tell me
(52:07):
why you did so? I don'twant to let you come. I can't
say good tie, I'll never saygoodbyee try, I never kid say goodbye,
(52:42):
But I never can say goodbye.I keep thinking that a problems soon
go to work, because it's sayingabout a happy feeling the next that anguish,
that doubt. It's what the sameme think. I'm here with you?
(53:08):
Tell me why is so? So? Let you go? I never
can say bye. I've never singby. They're gonna let you go.
(53:34):
I can't see bay, I amno say in my one home and never
I can't stay by? All right, yeah you heard that? Right?
(53:59):
That was do you amazing? IsaacHayes with a cover of never Can Say
Goodbye Here on k x f M. This is Jellyfish with a great cut
off their album called Spilt Milk. This is called bye Bye Bye on Coast
Iowa Shuffle Show. So there itis. All the truth is on the
(54:40):
table, nothing to book. It'sokay, stargin the wedding cake, all
the baden zoo remember it rowing toobits space love just toasting anyway. They

given them the great had they deserved, singing that bad, bad, bad
bad, and I have gone home. Lover why neglected to the end,
(55:31):
loves our own prison life, Solasays, not just a shame. She
calls his bloodies. Even though thetokens and dog watch a love and love

(58:10):
here on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. The next time I'm going to play,
I'm gonna do a tribute to afew folks here at the station that
I have so much respect for andhave gone through a lot and continue to
just do a wonderful job. I'mtalking about Greg, I'm talking about Cindy
all right, to May, Tommy, Jay, Alyssa. You know,
(58:31):
just some great people here at thestation. And I would be remiss if
I didn't mention Jimmy Alvarez, whofollows me now on TNT Radio TNN excuse
me, t it's got the explosiveexcitement of TNT TN HEN radio here at
the station. All these folks Ijust mentioned are so committed to radio,
(58:52):
free radio, public radio, nonprofitradio, and I'm just proud to be
associated with him. This goes outto them. This is Maroon five with
sweetest goodbye, yay, where youare seems to be as far as in
(59:25):

and earlier we had Squeeze with GoodbyeGirl. You're listening to the Coast
Highway Shuffle Show. My name isSteve Reid. We're going to do a
final weather announcement here today. Thisis our good buddy Dave Murray, k
(01:17:53):

Kxfmradio dot Org. Hi, thisis KXFM Meteorologist Day Murray. Our Santa
Ana flow is still in place today, but it starts to break down tonight.
The marine on shore flow returns overthe weekend and into early next week.
(01:18:16):
We also have a high surf advisoryand effect all day today. Pretty
strong swell from the west northwest,so expect some strong rip currents if you're
headed to the beach. Also,we've got high surf in our future,
especially late Sunday and Monday, andagain Thursday of next week, and it
might be interested. The full Hunter'sMoon is a week from Saturday, October
(01:18:40):
twenty eighth. So on this Friday, early clouds, going sunny, it's
windy, it's warm, eighty degreesfor the high eighty five top of the
world and molten meadows. Friday night, mostly clear skies, let's keep the
wind up overnight sixty degrees. Saturdaymorning clouds and sunshine, windy and seventy

the afternoon and cooler sixty eight degrees. That's my forecast on Meteorologist Dave Murray
for KXFM, Well to beach. As you obviously heard, that was a
weekend forecast. Here a little Fridaya little Saturday, and then he ended
with what's going on today? Sowe got some sun, we got some
clouds, and he covered it all. All right, I've got another song
(01:19:25):
I'm going to play here for bythe late Jeff Buckley, the great artist
Jeff Buckley. This one goes outwith appreciation to all my friends in Laguna
who have supported this show over thelast eleven years. There are way too
many to mention. I mean,I'm talking about just a lot of good
friends that have tuned in and overthe years and have shared their thoughts and
(01:19:48):
their inputs and their support for thisshow. I do want to call out
just two of them, though, who have particularly been supportive over these times,
kind of stand out even among thiscrowd of great friends that I'm fortunate
enough to have here in Laguna Beach. I'd like to call out Sharon Hardy,
who for years would burn me aCD once a month with at least
(01:20:13):
about twenty songs I had never heard. Sharon Hardy has amazing taste in music,
and she would burn a CD,drop it off in my mailbox on
burn drive, and I would usethat CD to populate my show week after
week after week. So both forher generosity in doing that. She really
did it for about four years onthe early days of this show, and
(01:20:34):
I've thanked her in the past, but this is a great opportunity to thank
her again for sharing her love ofmusic with me and actually gifting me that
music when it was still a timewhen if you wanted to share music you
had to burn a CD and makea little a little table of contents and
(01:20:55):
insert it into the CD box.So Sharon Hardy, thank you again for
all that love and support. AndI also want to call out dear friends
Scott and Kristin Thomas, who notonly have listened to the show consistently,
but are on a very very shortlist of people that when we would have
a fundraiser like Kak's Takeover or anykind of membership drive, the Thomases were
(01:21:18):
always first in line with a generousdonation. And so for their friendship,
for their love of music and supportof this show, and for their actual
contribution many times to this show,I want to thank Scott and Kristin Thomas,
who, by the way, willbe among the group I'm heading down
to Mexico with here on Tuesday,so looking forward to spending some more time
(01:21:42):
with them. I'd like to senda tribute to all those folks I just
mentioned with this song. This isas I said Jeff Buckley. This is
a song off his Grace album calledThe Last Goodbye Here on the Coast Highway
Shuffle Show. This is a lascar. I had to feel the love being
(01:23:02):

(01:25:30):

to his harmer ms getting so hardon the sun time and the memory all
(01:26:29):
right, that's Jeff Buckley with LastGoodbye. What an amazing album that is.
It's called Grace. If you don'thave it, get it. It's
amazing. The next time I'm goingto play as an artist that I love.
He's from Boston. He doesn't sing, so this is an instrumental and
I've loved him for years. Isaw Oh Gosh ten years ago now down
at the Coach House, and hedoesn't come out to California very often,
(01:26:53):
so the last time I saw himactually had to go out to Phoenix,
Arizona to see him. This isan artist by the name of Johnny A.
A great instrumental office album called Driven, and the name of this song
is the Night I Said Goodbye. Here for you now on the Coast Highway
Shuffle show as as as some timefor Span Summer again about to sing coming
(01:29:23):
to and all right, that isJohnny A with the Night I Said Goodbye.
(01:30:09):
You wouldn't know that because it wasan instrumental, but that is the
name of that song. Well, you probably have noticed the theme to the
songs I'm playing today, and ifyou haven't, we'll pay attention. You
might still pick it up. Thisnext song I'm going to play on today's
edition of The Coast Highway Shuffle Showis by Crosby Stills in Nash, off
(01:30:30):
the album Crosby Stills in Nash, which by the way, has a cover
art that was taken by the amazingHenry Dilts and just an amazing guy that
I had a chance to meet andinterview and hang out with. Just a
real sweet man, just a funnyguy, and that classic He's taken so
many classic rock photos, including thatone of Crosby Stills Nash actually sitting Nash

Great Jimmy Alvarez takes over with TNNRadio. I do want to acknowledge that
a pair of friends of mine camein, and I'm talking about Zach and
(01:41:49):
Kelly from the Whig Sandwich Shop acrossthe Highway here on Pearl Street came in
and we're just very sweet and camein and gave me a big old hug,
and they're just very special people.I'm talking Zach Cornwell and his amazing
beautiful fiance, Kelly, and soit was really nice to have them in
(01:42:12):
and stop by. And if you'relooking for a good place to grab a
sandwich here in Laguna Beach, goto Wigs sand Os it's on the Coast
Highway, the inland side of theCoast Highway and Pearl Street. And no,
they're not sponsors for my show. They're just good friends that have a
great business here in town. Andyou need to eat their sandwiches. So
(01:42:33):
wigs sandos here on Pearl Street inthe Coast Highway here and beautiful Laguna Beach.
That's Zach and Kelly speaking of bands, and well, not speaking of
bands, but speaking of Laguna Beach. One of the things I love about
Laguna and I'm grateful for is Icontinue and begin to wrap up this edition
of with Gratitude, is the livebands that we have here in the live
(01:42:58):
venues here in town, helping keepmusic alive, separate from the radio station,
just the locations where bands play andcan be heard. And I just
strongly encourage everyone go see live music. It's a lot of fun. It's
always entertaining, and the bands,of course appreciate it. One band that
plays here in town quite a bitis called the Salty Sweets. They're from
(01:43:19):
more in the Central Coast, butthey play in Lagoon a lot. I
love them. They're an amazing trio, sometimes a quartet, but usually a
trio. And this is a songby the Salty Sweets in tribute to all
the live bands that play here intown with my appreciation. This is a
song by the Salty Sweets called Goodbye, Oh Hi, Here for you now
(01:43:43):
on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.DearS don't cry themselves. You know no
goodbyes without hellows. It's gotta beery, gotta beeri. Dove all night up

(01:47:14):
Coast Highway Shuffle Show. I've beendoing a show today to express my gratitude
to so many, and I haveto admit that's brought me to the point
where I'm going to play a songnow and I'm gonna just simply say that
my beautiful wife Stevie, to myamazing daughter Amanda and her husband Rob,
and to my amazing son Connor, who, by the way, will be
(01:47:38):
back in Lagoon as of Monday. You know, I can't talk to them
or talk about them without getting emotional, so I won't talk much here.
I just want to say that withevery goodbye becomes a new door, a
new opening, and so really everygoodbye is attached to a hello. This
is the Beatles. Hello goodbye tothat little group of people that I adore
(01:48:01):
more than life itself. Here onthe Coast Highway Shuffle Show. You say,
I say no, You say sI say come, Come, Come,
(01:48:24):
You say goodbye? I say hello. No he don't know why you
say goodbye? I say hello, don't hello. Don't know why you say
goodbye? I say hello, Isay hi. You say no. You
(01:48:50):
say what I say? Don't yousay good bye? I say hello,
Hell, say good bye? Said, don't say goodbye, you say good
(01:49:41):
bye bye. Said, don't knowwhy you say goodbye? I say he,
don't know why you say goodbye?Sai. You say say I said?
(01:50:04):
You say stop? Stay? Saysay still? Do you say bye?
No Hello, I don't know whyyou say goodbye? Say no Hello.
(01:50:31):
I don't know why I say goodbye? Say hello, I don't know
why I say goodbye. Said.Well, that's a song that doesn't need
(01:51:28):
any introduction. That's Hello Goodbye bythe Beatles. Here on the Coast Highway
Shuffle Show. I got enough timeto squeeze in a couple of songs that
are very important to me to share. So I'm going to do that right
now, this next song just remindThis next song slays me every time.
If you listen to it, Ipromise you, particularly anyone who has lost
a father, this will touch you. I guarantee you. But this song
(01:51:54):
reminded me of the eleven years thatI've been here at the station, and
this show is about expressing gratitude forthat. How many milestone events, both
happy and sad I've experienced during thoseeleven years, and this radio station has
allowed me to in many cases expressthose emotions, in many cases share those
(01:52:15):
feelings, both the happy ones andthe sad ones with you, which I've
been so grateful to be able todo. It's been very cathartic in so
many times. And this song I'mgoing to play now to sort of capture
just the power of music, howit touches us, particularly when we can
(01:52:38):
imagine its impact to us with loss. And this is a song by Chad
Atkins, the late great guitar playerChet Atkins. And you'll hear Chad Atkins.
This is him singing on it.It's on an album he put out
with Mark Knopf, a very difficultalbum to track down. But this song
is called I Still can't say goodbye, and he sings it about his
(01:53:01):
father. I encourage you to listento the lyrics closely. It's a beautiful
song. Slays me every time. But when I think of this song,
I think about you know, Buddyand Joycey and Donald and Cubby and so
many others that I've lost over theyears. I mentioned ethan earlier. Loss
(01:53:27):
is powerful, but music can heal. This song speaks to that. You
know, every time I look inthe mirror, I see my dad.
I think that's why this song meansso much to me. When I was
(01:53:53):
young, my dad would say, come on, son, let's go lod
play. Sometimes it seems like yesthurday. Then I climb up the closet
(01:54:23):
shelf when I was all by,so grab his hat and fix the brim
F ten nine was him. Nomatter how hard I try, no matter
(01:54:54):
how many tears I cried, nomatter how any years go by, I
still can't say goodbye. He alwaystook care of Mom and me. We
(01:55:27):
all cut down a Christmas tree.He always had some time for me.
(01:55:47):
Wind blows through the trees, streetlights that still shine bright, move still
looks the same. But I missmy dad tonight I walked by a Salvation
(01:56:16):
Army store, so I had, like my daddy, tried it all when
I walked in, still trying tobe like him. No matter how hard
(01:56:45):
I try, no matter how manyyears, no matter how many tears I
cried, I still can't say goodbye. All right, Well that pretty much
(01:57:26):
speaks for itself. There that again, the great Chad Atkins. What a
beautiful, beautiful song. Well,I can't say goodbye, but I will
let you know that I've enjoyed everybit of eleven years and I want you
all to know how much I appreciateyou. We've talked about this show today
being about gratitude, and I justencourage all of us to take the time
(01:57:48):
to really consider what you have andbe simply be grateful for it. Think
about it, and it's a verypowerful emotion, gratitude. With that,
this is the end of the CoastHighway Shuffle Show. I want to send
you all my appreciation over these lasteleven years, and truly my love.
(01:58:11):
I will leave you now with asong that won't surprise you, but I
really appreciate it all and I willall. I will see you on the
radio. Take care, everybody,God bless you can't turn him into a
(01:58:33):
company man. You can't turn himinto a hood. And the boys upstairs
this don't understand anymore. You knowthe talk pass don't I can talk?
And so much any won't play today say to play endy down, want
(01:58:55):
to change led, don't need tochange. There goes the last Steve JA,
who plays what he wants to play. It says what he was to
say. Hey, Nichols, youfleed, I'm out Joys. There goes
(01:59:18):
the last human boys Nickels, thelast steech with some folks said that kind
of hang him so high because youjust can't do it. He did this
something you just can't put. Imaginethose kids as we celebrate mad eat up
(01:59:46):
Cuchie. Oh, the boys upstairswant to see how much you'll pay for
what you used to get for free. There goes the last Steve j who
plays where he was to play.He says what he was to say.
(02:00:10):
Ay, There goes a Joys. There goes the last U voice. There
goes the last stage of the world. I love you about will you go
(02:00:50):
in the station down in Mexico? And sometimes he lookta come about by stood
Remember how it was back then? There goes the last Jay, who plays
what he was to play. Itsays what he was to say, Hey,
(02:01:15):
hey hey. There goes you playedand my choice. There goes the
last Une choice. There goes thelast speech Ja
