This disclaimer is a statement notifying listeningaudiences that any opinions expressed in our shows

of directors. Good Morning, LagunaBeach. It is Sunday at ten am,
(00:49):
and that means, at least inmy little slice of heaven here at
KXFM, it means it's time fora new addition of the Coast Highway Shuffle
Show. My name is Steve Reid. I'll be your host for the next
two hours while we wind ourselves througha precarious walking walkway of music for you
(01:12):
here. We got all kinds ofstuff for you today, and I certainly
hope that you will enjoy it asmuch as I know I love these songs
and enjoyed putting the show together foryou. It is Labor Day, Sunday,
and you know the thing you thinkabout Labor Day is, of course,
it's the end of summer. Itis the unofficial end of summer.
(01:36):
Labor Day weekend is especially true herein Laguna Beach, where a lot of
things start slowing down and shutting down. In some cases, they're either kind
of already shut down heading into theweekend, or other events, for example,
like Sawdust continue today the Sawdust Festival. So we're kind of in the
(01:57):
preparation of saying goodbye to summer. Now, summer doesn't officially end until September
twenty second, so we still gotplenty of summer left. We got just
about three weeks left. Speaking ofsummer, I was out last week.
I was down with friends, greatfriends on the East Cape of Baja.
(02:19):
We were down there for a surftrip, and I really want to thank
Brian and David and Mike for beingsuch great surf trip buddies. We had
a lot of fun, drank alittle too much, quite honestly. It
was super warm, ninety degrees inhumid all day. Water was eighty eight
(02:40):
degrees, so it was not refreshing, but it was great and it was
great to be down there and prettygood surf. And I'm glad to be
back today here on KXFM. Sowe're going to get right into the music
here for today's edition. And thefirst song I'm going to play for is
appropriately titled about to Begin. Thisis actually by Robin Trauer off his second
(03:07):
album that came out in nineteen seventyfour. The name of the album is
Bridge of Size. And as Isaid, this song is called about to
Begin. I do want to callout this is an amazing trio, Robin
Trauer's trio. And the vocalist,of course is not Robin Trauer, but
(03:29):
the bassist James Douer. With that, this is Robin Trauer. And this
is the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. And if you stand in the line,
(04:30):
you get the feet of the rightand lem you lose in the play in
your early in your hand you canhear a bar so sweet and clean,
(04:51):
and let m use it. Theplane in your hands. It's a flow
from the ground. Take kill, kill the town. Close your eyes.
It's a ground ter hardly dare tobeither, and you love you perceived.
(06:15):
You try not to bray spell whilethat one sits in the board. It's
a floey, it's a clod.If you mean sell to touch, it
(06:36):
would be gone. There's a flowerup from the ground taking all and hear.
That's closure. It's your ground tomake close to big. Oh yeah,
(07:12):
Robin Trauer, amazing about to begin, and this shows about to begin.
I should let you know that.A little bit of a change in
sequence here to long time listeners ofk XFM, where you'd always get a
weather update at the bottom of thehour, now we're doing it at the
top of every hour. We've gotan amazing weatherman who's joined the team here
at KXFM, fellow by the nameof Dave Murray, and he's going to
(07:35):
be giving us hourly updates. Nowthe weather at the top of the hour,
Dave, what's going on? Hi? This is KXFM meteorologist Dave Murray.
Is our holiday weekend continues on thisSunday. Clouds and mists in the
morning, going partly sunny as wework our way through the afternoon. Still
a little bit on the breezy side, but the humidity stays up sixty nine
(07:58):
degrees. We'll do it for thehigh Tonight. Clouds dominate the marine layer
back in full four sixty four theovernight low Monday Labor Day, early early
morning clouds, then more and moresun as we go through the late morning
and definitely through the afternoon. Prettygood day on Monday, with temperatures near
ar seventy. We continue to dealwith the South swell, some pretty good
(08:18):
waves out there and rip currents willcontinue to be a concern right through Monday.
That's our weather. I'm meteorologist AMurray for KXFM. How do you
like that? Come on, Dave. That is fantastic, Thank you,
sir. It's nice to have aprofessional weather expert here among the staff,
and we certainly really appreciate Dave Murrayhis skill and his joining the kx FM
(08:48):
team. My job is to nottalk about weather, but to play music
for you, So let's get somemore music going now. By the Smitherines.
This is an album called blow Up. It was their fourth album.
It came about in nineteen ninety one, and this is just a very cool
song called Indigo Blues. As webegin to accompany you here on this Labor
(09:09):
Day, Sunday, twenty twenty three, I want you to know about my
(09:33):
indigo. I want you to seejust once she's touching me. I'm talking
to myself again, I'm talking tothe wall. I'm not my self respect
(09:54):

and then start song over again.I want you to know just what she's
(10:24):
done to me. I want itall towards the way in the Spencer feeling
I'm talking to myself again him andno one out. I'm losing my life
(10:45):

again and then start sing over again. Here we go baby, here we
(11:45):
go into go baby, in togo, Here we go baby, here
we go into go baby to go, and then it stop song over and

to me what she's I'm talking tomyself, getting into myself, talking into
the wall. I'm talking. I'vegot no selfiss fret, no selfis got
(12:43):
loving and at all. And itstarting s over and stop small overain stops,
(13:05):
stops, stops, stops, stops, stops, stops. The late
(13:41):
great Pat DiNizio on vocals there, man, I loved those guys live in
concert. He was an amazing vocalist. The band itself just a great four
piece rock band, and I hopeyou enjoyed that. That again is the
Smitherines with Indigo Blues here on theCoast Highway show. Full show here on
k x FM. Al right,next up, we're gonna play a really
(14:05):
kind of I'll just say an unusualcut only because it's not one of the
hits that was on the CSN Record. Now. The CSN Record is the
fifth album by Crosby, Stills andNash. Came out in nineteen seventy seven
and it had a couple of hits. One probably the biggest one was just
(14:26):
a song before I Go and notinitially a hit, but became a hit
down the road. A little bitwas a Dark Star, which is greatly
done by Stephen Stills. And speakingof Stephen Stills, I've selected this cut
to share with you now from thisalbum. It was written by Steven Stills
(14:48):
for CSN. The name of thesong is run from Tears, and the
lead vocals that you hear on thiscut is also the great stevens Stills.
Your list sitting to k x FMon a Labor Day Sunday, this is
Run from Tears here for you nowon the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. I
(15:30):
don't run from tier. That's myweekend now. But I know you still
logg me though you don't believe inthat. You choose father song. Everything
(16:00):
was always like to be smooth. All we needed was sometime like something special,
(16:25):
seen me die argue, punishing befor my weakness. Will you know
(16:49):
about me? Girl? I cannotbe beaten down too far and die.
You need to take it for onlyabout the ball left me so disja I
(17:12):
was blind the boys and tell youlike l I'm round, I'm lighting so
bitnashho is it may die? There'san empty place? Eat back up,
(17:52):
bear right my hearties be tea againstmy I here yeah, but she threw
(18:12):
my ving because Jay f one say, oh man, that's CSN. But
(19:04):
it's all Steven Still's there, thevocals, the songwriting, and of course
that distinctive so cool guitar riff throughoutthe song that again run from Tears off
the CSN album entitled Simply CSN.You're listening to the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
My name is Steve Reid, andwe are starting to slide into this
(19:29):
first hour of songs for you.In the next song, I'm gonna play
for you. I think I mighthave played recently, but I liked it
so much. Someone actually mentioned itover the weekend. I thought, you
know what, I'm gonna play itagain. So forgive me if I sound
like I'm simply repeating myself. Butthe name of the band that I'm gonna
play you right now is photo Maker, fot O Maker, one word photo
(19:51):
Maker. They're bound their band brotherout of Long Island, New York.
And they were formed in seventy sevenby the bassist and the drummer from the
band The Rascals, And they hada guitarist vocalist that joined them from the
band The Raspberries. So in away it was kind of a supergroup,
(20:12):
if you will, but they weren'tknown as a supergroup. In fact,
they had very limited success, onlyput out two albums. And this is
a song that it's just a verycool song. I've always liked it.
It's a great pop song from themid seventies that I'm going to share with
you now. This is photo Makeroff the album shockingly titled photo Maker.
(20:37):
And the name of this cut iswhere have you been all my life?
Here on k XFMA in a millionpieces? And did see my birdness and
(21:07):
my destiny were misteries then? Soyou came into my life and you brought
my auto one way chicken and straightto paratires and just wear all my life?
(21:33):
Tell me where you been all mylife? I'm just like you all.
Once I feeling my pastor was likea story with the empty pages.
(21:56):
But now I see all these yearsI spent a waiting for bry me,
for you, And it's true.Thes won't bright now because I feel just
like a new one child whenever I'mwith you. Just well, been all
(22:22):
my life everywhere, been all mylife, oh my life, way my
life. Been waiting all my life, be waiting just like you, all
(22:49):
my life, all my life, the way my life, the way,
(23:32):
all my life. By the way, just tell you where you all my
life? Tell be away all mylife, all my life. Tell me
(23:59):
where all right? That'll put asmile on your face. I'd say,
where have you been? All mylife? By photo Maker? There it
(24:22):
is one of those songs. Excuseme. As you listen to it,
you can imagine them playing this livein a big auditorium of people waving their
big lighters back and forth. Butit just has such a beautiful tune to
it. Hope you enjoyed that asmuch as I do. Photo Maker,
Where have you been All my life? I'm gonna get real quick here into
nineteen seventy two and the second studioalbum by the Doobie Brothers. The name
(24:48):
of the album is to Loose Street, and the album itself, like all
Doobie Brothers albums back then, hadsome songs on it that would become destined
to to be classics. Right, listen to the music rocking down the Highway.
Jesus is just alright. All we'reoff that second album. The song
(25:08):
I'm Gonna Play for You Now offthat album is simply the title track.
There's a very cool song called TulouStreet on the Tulu Street album. Here
by the Doobie Makers, how abouthere by the Doobie Brothers. Here on
k XM the Doobie Makers, wherethere's a little Freudian slip. Let's see
(25:57):
faces the slide, my fallly doorswithout way nose all shudder, dye again.
I just might pass this way again. I just might pass this way
(26:18):
again. I just might pass thisway. I just might pass this way
again. But die she is hard, the olders, they sing, my
heart it is un in myaing. The spell has been cast down in New

all these again, I just mightpass this way again. I just might

(28:48):
k XFM again. That is asong called Toulouse Street. I'm gonna play
one more song here before we getinto today's headset, and that song is
going to be by Jason Isabel inthe four hundred unit. The name of
this song is King of Oklahoma. You are listening to Laguna's Only FM on
(29:10):
one oh four point seven on yourfrequently frequency modulated dial if you're driving slowly
past the station on the Coast Highway. But if you're listening on a computer,
you know how to get in touchwith us here. You're already listening
to us. This again has JasonIsabel, King of Oklahoma. We take
(30:02):
the cover from the workside, readme here midnight. They got a camera.
Agard write my own prescription. IfI can get a fixed son,
Shit's about to get real hard.Molly, don't believe me. Says she's
gonna leave me. The kids don'teven know my day. The cavin in

(30:51):
Ever thought I'd wind up this farbehind. Just abo years back we had
it me. I was to bein my bladder on a twenty foot ladder,
should climb down and found myself someshade doctor took a quick look,
and I gotta have the check bookand left with the market four pills.
(31:15):
Now. My back's still hurting nowtwo week for working in a green deep
up blone bill. She has towake me up a car be every morning
and her home made house shoes slideacross the floor. She has to make
(31:42):

But you're nothing anymore. I wasall set up and do it us some

(32:37):
She's going back to fix meat.Time time to fix me, says,
I got some shift to figure out. Shes doing me up a car every
morning here homemade how shoes sky acrossthe floor. She used to let me
(33:04):
feel like the king of my home. Nothing makes me feel alright, Watching
nothing it anymore? She to me, I was cary morning, My guy
(33:27):
was sleep and chill. She walkedback to the door. She used to
let me feel like the king ofmy home. Nothing makes me feel like
watching nothing it anymore? All right? That is Jason Isabel in the four
(34:25):
hundred unit here on k x FM. What a if you listen to those
lyrics, boy, they just kindof tear at your heart, you know,
just the difficulty of living with addictionor with injury, and just how
some people do have so much goingon in their lives that is painful and
(34:45):
tragedy, and you just you wouldknow it, right, You just don't
know it. All right. You'relistening to the Coast Highway Shuffle Show and
it is time for today's headset. My beautiful daughter Amanda up in Bellflower would
call this Steve's bone yard, butwhatever you call it, it is a
(35:05):
time at the show where we pausefor just a second, typically to recognize
an artist. Unfortunately these days thathas passed away more often than not,
that's what we end up focusing on. And certainly the music industry this year,
like all these recent years, hasseen their share of loss. Today,
(35:27):
the headset we're going to do isnot shockingly for Jimmy Buffett, who
passed away two days ago. Andyou know, it's interesting. Jimmy Buffett
is one of those individuals who transcendentgenerations. I know that I enjoyed him.
I remember Margarita coming out, Margaritavillecoming out in nineteen seventy seven when
(35:49):
I was a freshman in college, and it was a big kind of a
party song, as you could imagine. And now all these years later,
you know, well, gosh, many many years later, almost fifty years
later, frankly, there is asimilar appreciation that the next generation has.
I know, my son Connor isa big fan, and Connor and his
(36:12):
buddies here in Laguna Beach would gosee Jimmy Buffett when he was in town,
and it was a big thing togo see Jimmy Buffett. Even as
teenagers. They would all rally togetherand get dressed up and get kind of
crazy, and it was just anevent. And if you've ever been to
a Jimmy Buffett concert. If youever had the joy of going to a
(36:32):
Buffett concert, you know that itwas quite the party, and it very
often got out of control in agood way, but out of control.
Lots of designated drivers were needed tobring people home. And in fact,
I remember one time I went tosee Jimmy Buffett with my buddy Mike,
and Connor and his buddy Mike's sonRand were with us, and at the
(36:55):
end of the show we needed alittle help getting home, and Rand,
who at the time I think wasjust turned sixteen, he might have been
fifteen with a driver's license permit,he drove us home. I think Connor
was at that one. If hewasn't, it was just like any other
you know, Jimmy Buffett concert wasa huge party in the parking lot,
all the parrot heads and all thegreat you know, flatbed trucks with volcanoes
(37:21):
on him and it was just ahuge scene, a huge, huge event.
And so when someone like that passes, it's not just a musical loss,
but it's also a cultural loss. It's also a loss of your own
identity in your own musical history. And so I really get the sense that
(37:42):
there's a lot of people that arevery bummed out that Jimmy Buffett has passed,
not for all the typical reasons wenormally associate with the loss of a
wonderful musician, but it's almost likea chapter in everyone's life has now closed,
or you know, can no longerbe open again, can no longer
be visited. I had the greatthrill, truly thrill, to meet Jimmy
(38:05):
Buffett. And the brief story behindthat is that one day I was at
home and my good neighbor and mybroadcasting partner on our Thursday morning at eight
am show, Brian Hurley called meand he said, hey, what are
you doing. I said nothing. He goes, you want to go down
to the ranch meaning the ranch hereMark Christie's operation here in Laguna, And
I said, well why, Hesaid, well, I think you just
(38:28):
want to come on down here. It's worth your time. So okay,
let's go down. We drove downthere and we were getting out of the
car and this golf cart pulls upand this guy's in the golf cart who
looked oddly familiar, but not superfamiliar. You know, I had a
baseball cap on. He just hadone of those kind of familiar general faces.
(38:49):
Well, the guy that said helloand pulled up in that golf cart
as we showed up at the ranchturned out to be Jimmy Buffett. And
Jimmy Buffett was there at the ranchto see Mark Christy, who was a
personal friend of his, and Markwas going to take him on a tour
of the property because at that timethere was a lot of hope and that
there may be the ability to developa concert venue down at the ranch with
(39:14):
everything that was going on there atthe time. And Jimmy Buffett was being
toured by Mark Christy around the propertyand he loved it. Who doesn't love
the ranch, right, It's justa gorgeous property. And Jimmy took the
tour and he said, you know, if I could, if I could
make my tour stop here, ifI could we could sell I'd love to
(39:34):
have my tour stop here. Sohe was that big of a fan that,
with all he had going on,I think he really would have gone
out of his way to do somekind of a concert event at the ranch.
So hats off to Mark Christy, who I know used to play barefoot
golf with Jimmy and maintained a friendshipwith Jimmy over the years, but for
(39:55):
me that day, along with mybuddy Brian Hurley, it was quite a
thrill to meet the man. AndI have to just say he was a
extremely friendly, personable, talkative, regular guy. He was everything you'd want.
You know, they say, youknow, don't meet your hero as
well. Although I can't say Jimmywas my hero, I admired him dramatic,
(40:19):
you know, tremendously, and tohave him turn out to be such
a genuinely nice man was just icingon the cake. So I know people
are talking about his musical history andhis impact, his tremendous success as a
musician, as a restaurant tour,as an actor. It goes on and
on, but we're going to focusright away here on a headset today for
Jimmy Buffett. As we acknowledge himand as we say thank you, and
(40:43):
as we say goodbye, there's threesongs I'm going to play back to back
to back. It's what we dowhen we call it a headset. If
you have headphones on, we encourageyou to put him on because it's just
a little acknowledgement that sometimes with headphoneseverything sounds really good. And we're gonna
play these three songs in chron chronologicalorder. The first one, I'm Gonna
(41:04):
play for You came out on hisnineteen seventy three album called A White sport
Coat and a Pink Crustacean, andthat album came out in nineteen seventy three,
way before the big hit of Margaritaville. And that song I'm gonna play
is called Grapefruit Juicy Fruit. There'ssomething about this song that reminds me of
(41:29):
the Virgin Islands, where my familyand I had a chance to spend lots
of time over the years, andit has a very islandy feel. But
there is also this jazzy little interludethat comes up twice in the song that
is so cool. I just hadto play this song for those reasons.
The next song we're going to playafter that is a wonderful cut called Come
(41:52):
Monday. And this this was kindof a big hit of his off his
seventy four album called Living and Dyingin three quarter Time, and it was
really a song that was a hitbefore Margaritaville. And this song Come Monday
was actually a song that he wrotefor his future wife while he was away
(42:15):
on a tour and it's one ofhis most popular songs. It's what they
call part of the Big Eight, which means it was played in almost every
one of his concerts. You'll recognizeit. But you know I spent four
lonely days in a brown La Hayesspeak so beautifully of missing someone you love
when you're on the road. Andthen the third song we're going to play.
(42:38):
This was suggested to be by ByeBoy Out in Austin, Texas.
Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes. This came out in nineteen seventy seven,
right after, immediately after Margaritaville,so he was now a huge star.
And again this song sums up somuch the party atmosphere and just the
(43:02):
wonderful free feeling of his concerts. So Connor, thank you for suggesting that
third song. So this is today'sheadset in honor of Jimmy Buffett. Grapefruit,
juicy fruit come Monday and changes inlatitudes, changes in attitudes. Thank
(43:23):

Murray. Is our holiday weekend cantinus on this Sunday. Clouds and mists
in the morning, going partly sunnyas we work our way through the afternoon,
(57:06):
still a little bit on the breezyside, but the humidity stays up
sixty nine degrees. We'll do itfor the high Tonight, clouds dominate the
marine layer back in full four sixtyfour the overnight low Monday Labor Day,
early early morning clouds, then moreand more sun as we go through the
late morning and definitely through the afternoon. Pretty good day on Monday with temperatures
(57:27):
near seventy. We continue to dealwith the South Swell, some pretty good
waves out there, and rip currentswill continue to be a concern right through
Monday. That's our weather. I'mmeteorologist d Murray for KXFM. All right,
the beach. Thank you, DaveMurray. I appreciate that. You
know, Dave Murray now is ourweatherman here at the station. Hearing him
do the weather, it's so muchbetter than when DJ's like me try to
(57:51):
describe the weather looking out the window. It's a little gray, well,
you know, a little windy. You know that. Frankly, you need
a pro, and Dave Murray isa pro. He has done this professionally
for his whole career. So thisis very cool to have Dave Murray doing
weather here at kx FM. Allright, you know, we just played
(58:12):
that wonderful cut by Tom Petty calledGainesville, and it was actually a studio
outtake and just a great song though, and it got me thinking about singer
songwriters. Right, we've done thattribute to the great Jimmy Buffett. You
got Tom Petty and one of thesinger songwriters that just in my opinion,
doesn't get enough attention and was justsuch a joy to listen to back in
(58:37):
the day he passed away years ago, is the great Dan Fogelberg. And
I'm going to play a song ofhis right now for you that I just
think is stunningly beautiful. It's offhis Exiles album, which came out in
nineteen eighty seven. And you know, when I think about that eighty seven,
I was dating my soon to bewife who became my wife, and
(59:00):
eighty eight so this was a songand I remember taking her to see Dan
Fogelberg in concert down here in OrangeCounty at the Irvine Amphitheater when that was
the spot to go to. Andthe song that I'm going to play off
this great album called Exiles is asong called lonely in love, and it
(59:22):
does have that classic accompaniment of theclassic eighties saxophone. I give you that,
and that does unfortunately not hold upas well as other music does.
But if you kind of take thesaxophone there with a grain assault and listen
to the lyrics and listening to thegorgeous melody here, I think you're gonna
(59:44):
understand why I love it. Thisis Lonely in Love by Dan Fogelberg here
on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.So saying that love is its own love
(01:00:19):
is its own world. But Ican't help but believe it's going to be
born. Then needs warm to heaven, to loving body as well as in
(01:00:40):
the soul. I need your desire. You where it? Bye? You're
good. I trying to sleep, but sleep won't be mind now there's so
(01:01:19):
much so rum inside, and baby, I don't know why I can't you
read them. I give you love. I get all I have in time
That meant I don't know, baby, Maybe I give to more. I
(01:01:45):
don't know me in love? WhyI'm starting on in love? It's a
lonely in love and wine must stopbelone wine must stop be lonely in love,
(01:02:45):
I love, I love carries shecarries no gajeess, but still alive,
casing the find a reason that Ican't believe it. You said to
(01:03:06):
be talking, give yourse you saidyou and changes in need door, But
the longer I wait, the fatherbe from you. Don't lonely in love?
(01:03:27):
While I stopping only blue, I'mlonely in love? Maybe why must
stop belnely? Wife? Must stopbeing lonely in life? The lonely in
lie while starting lonely love, I'mlonely in love. Maybe y'all warding keep
(01:04:02):
me l You know, Dan Fogelbergis one of those amazing artists that you
(01:05:12):
know, a lot of guys mayhave as kind of a guilty pleasure.
Right. He's good looking guy andjust amazing music that he made in particular
back in the eighties. And Iencourage you to go into his catalog and
listen to some of his amazing songslike Leader of the Band and Same Old
Lang Zine and Longer and I Meanand the song we just played for you
(01:05:34):
there Lonely in Love. That isDan Fogelberg here on the Coast Highway Shuffle
Show. All right, you know, since I was mentioning singer songwriters.
I have to acknowledge a friend ofmine, a dear friend of mine,
Amy Manfreini. We had dinner. We were at a dinner party on Friday
night, and I want to thankChristine and Kevin for throwing the most amazing
(01:05:56):
seafood dinner I've ever had. We'restill we're still making our way through seafood.
And that night Amy and I weretalking and she said, are you
familiar with an artist by the nameof Tommy Prine? And I said,
no, I'm not. She goes, well, you know John Pride,
right, sure, you know JohnPrine, amazing singer songwriter who passed away
(01:06:18):
about two years ago, three yearsago. Amazingly enough. Well, he
has children and one of his kidsis named Tommy, and Tommy Prine just
put out his first album, andAmy said, you need to listen to
this album. You need to checkit out. So I made a little
note to myself, and yesterday Ilistened to Tommy Prine's album twice, cover
(01:06:42):
to cover, and I was ittook my breath away. It was one
of those things where I listened toit and on a couple of points,
I don't mind admitting I got chokedup. I mean listening to some of
his songs and his lyrics. Hehas a very low key kind of ethereal
style, and his strength, really, in my opinion, is his lyrics,
(01:07:03):
and they're very personal, very powerful. And the song I'm gonna play
for you right now is one ofthose songs, and it's just really a
really neat song, and it's calledShips in the Harbor. And I'll let
the lyrics speak for themselves. Thisis Tommy Prine, son of John Prine,
and I want to again thank AmyManfreni for the wonderful recommendation. I
(01:07:28):
deeply appreciate it. This is theCoast Highway Shuffle show. Must be the
(01:07:53):
morning again. The son through thewindow folk good my skin. So it
must believe even soon as it should. And I saw the bluebird again.
(01:08:15):
She pointed it out in the yardand offense. So it must believe even
so as it should. I'm standingby water. It's harder and harder.
It's why I get saddling their shipsin the horn, because they must believe
(01:08:43):
even soon as they should. AndI got to see an old friends.
We left and stayed until they camedoing it because he must believe even soon
(01:09:09):
as we do. Attend to geta lost and start a waste every night
wondering where we all are and howwe must believe evenson as we should.
(01:09:32):
I'm standing by. It's harder andharder. It's why I get saddling their
ships in the heart, because theymust believe even soon as they should.
(01:10:09):
It takes time to know your rong. It takes even longer put it all
in a song. And I wishit was easy, too, like when
by piece for Arter, he's murderand hard I do anything, just talk
(01:10:35):
to my father. But I guesshe was leaving so as we Yeah,
I guess he was passing through. And I am to wow, alright,
(01:11:00):
that's Tommy Prime. This is kerrangBen here on k x F m U,
(01:12:15):
I don't all right, that's Crankbeen here on k x FM.
(01:14:48):
And the song I'm Gonna play foryou next here in the Coast Highway Shuffle
shows a really cool song that youknow. I can't remember exactly where I
heard it, but like you,if I hear a song, I like,
I have a tennessee to shis zamit and then after I shazam and
I go figure out where it camefrom, and I added to my collection
of music, and it's been awonderful way to discover and capture music that
(01:15:10):
I like when I hear it,because, like all music, right,
you know it when you hear it, you like it when you hear it.
And this is a great example ofthat. If you take two members
of the band Fish, specifically TreyAnastasio and Paige McConnell, you take those
two members and put them together andsay make an album. This is what
they do. They make an albumcalled January, and the song I'm Gonna
(01:15:32):
Play for You off that album isone called Life Saving Gun. It's an
unusual little cut here two and ahalf minutes long, kind of fun to
like a little palette cleanser here onthe Ghost Iway Shuffle show A man,
(01:16:01):
it is so food vessels of becushion, rince. We are disc cult to
mast and this failsic color. Alight sailing gun, a light singing gun,
(01:16:31):
a light saving gun. In thispepper bush, your glone wheel lice.
The cash is fan is a lifesaving gun. In cluster calls volting
(01:17:00):
Country, in the walls House, there is life saving gun. There is
life singing goun. There is lifesaying God. There is like somebody saying,
(01:17:23):
there is life sing like sing thereis life lies like saying there is
life sings like singing. There islife life saving. There is life saying
my God, I see. Thereis life saying money like saying. There
(01:17:47):
is licence like saying God. Andthat like saying goun be so isceration life
saying God. Nice Like I said, that was a little unusual. I
(01:18:15):
love it. I love everything aboutthat. It's caught my attention, is
I hope it caught your attention hereon this beautiful Sunday. The next song
I'm gonna play, I'm gonna sendout to my dear sister, Well,
she's my sister in law, butshe's my sister. And I'm talking about
dear Val back in Rhode Island, who I'm gonna get a chance to see.
We're flying back late this week tospend some time with her and Ross
(01:18:36):
looking forward to that Ross aka thisguy in Rhode Island. I'll never leave
that one down. But the songI'm gonna play for my sister Val is
a song off the Amalie soundtrack. This came out in two thousand and one
and It's just kind of interesting becausethe director of that movie got exposed to
(01:19:02):
the accordion and piano driven music ofa gentleman by the name of Jan Tearson
who was a production assistant on themovie. He was so impressed that he
eventually bought the entire catalog of musicthat this production assistant had created at this
point, and he eventually commissioned himto do pieces of the movie's soundtrack.
(01:19:28):
The music, again is by anartist named Jan Tearson, and the song
I'm going to play now and hereI go. This is where I mess
up because I'll try to say itproperly, but I believe it's lavasamale.
That is so wrong. I knowit. My daughter, who also does
a pretty good job of speaking friends, I know, is going to send
me a text and say, wow, Dad, you weren't even close.
(01:19:50):
But it's it's all you just try, you know, you try, You
try your best. That's all youcan do in this life. So this
is Jean Tearson's lavais Dama, andthis is going out to Val and my
dear Amanda. We're going I'll beactually traveling with Val at the end of
this month, and my wife andand ross, and we're all going to
(01:20:14):
go to Paris for a while atthe end of this month. So there's
another reason why I picked this particularsong. It's a beautiful, beautiful instrumental.
Here we go on the Coast Highwayshuffle show a bad such pets except
(01:21:12):
sex teachers set with such such ateacher teatures the ultra. This is a
(01:22:45):
band called Diesel Sacelito. Summer nighton k xfm's going in your gramber the
(01:23:24):
running rid. I've never been mychither gambler. A lot of brothers to
you ever get about the Let's takethe car and say the best we will
(01:23:49):
win. Ass in on the grapevines. Any dollars, remember nights like
(01:24:14):
to eat? I guess that theyeat another mile up a quarter in the
med and it's the sider for awhile. I have a burner and a
rood. You see, they eatsome mother gray a shot of breeding into
(01:24:36):
blood dead. We'll get across thegolden game. Another l two to raise
(01:25:08):
call two hundred gallants my melato, something like a discall we had a number
in the yet all my check myriver with the chang blood. You know
(01:27:47):
I should point out when they sayHot Summer Night and Saucelito. That band
Diesel. They're Dutch. That songcame out of nineteen eighty one, so
to hear them talking about hot summernights in Sacelito and you know the opening
line about being in a rambler withan empty radiator. I mean, it's
(01:28:09):
just it's a classic sort of Californiavibe that they've captured there with that song.
But it is a Dutch band, and that was all the way back
from nineteen eighty one, the bandDiesel with Sacelito Summer Night. Before I
play my next song, I'm goingto kind of just clarify something earlier.
I played that beautiful waltz for thesoundtrack of Amilie and I, you know,
(01:28:33):
butchered my way through the intro. My dear sister Valve texted me,
Now, this is the classic thingwhen you try to speak a foreign language
and people that really know the languageare listening to you. What do they
always say when they start out witha response, Well, this is what
she said. She said, Ithink he did a pretty good job of
pronouncing that title, which is verysweet of her, but so inaccurate.
(01:28:58):
That's just that's what family does, right, Hey, you did really good
there with that pronunciation. And thenshe went on to say valse, which
I had pronounced vais because I readit as an eye not an L,
and I thought it said la vaisdamlie. She said, well, valse
sounds very much like its meaning waltz, so in a very kind way,
(01:29:24):
she very gently kind of corrected me. And so now I can say with
all honesty that song was called lavalse damie, and that just sounds a
little bit better. Thank you.Val. It's funny that we're talking about
Valse and Waltz, because well, anyway, there's a whole story about Val
and Wall and anyway goes on andon in our family lovingly. So of
(01:29:45):
course, all right, I hopeyou enjoyed that. I did need to
set the record straight though, onthe whole pronunciation thing, because in my
extent family, it is all aboutdoing it right. Got to be all
right. The next time I'm gonnaplay I played a few months ago and
I got a great response from it, so I'm going to play it again.
(01:30:06):
But I want to clarify something thatI misstated when I played it a
few months ago. I'm talking abouta song off Paul McCartney's Unplugged album.
Now, when Paul McCartney did thisback in ninety one, no bands had
really done that. He appeared onMTV Unplugged and he then released an album
(01:30:29):
of that performance. Now at thistime, you know, from my gosh,
Nirvana to Eric Clapton, there's somany artists that we associate with amazing
unplugged performances, but Paul McCartney wasthe first to do it back in nineteen
ninety one. The other thing that'sunusual about this album is a lot of
times people appear on the Unplugged showand they're acoustic instruments, but they're plugged
(01:30:54):
into amplifiers, and that was notthe case. Again for this Paul McCartney
album. Everything was literally unplugged, and so they stuck microphones next to all
these truly acoustic instruments to get thesound that they captured here. Now,
a lot of the songs he playedwere, of course acoustic or excuse me,
(01:31:17):
yeah, unplugged versions of even songsthat he wrote with John Lennon,
like here, there and everywhere andwe can work it out and I've just
seen a face. But the oneI'm going to play for you now is
a cover that he did of thegreat Bill Withers song Ain't No Sunshine.
And I'm also going to make thestatement now to correct my mistake of a
few when I first played this weeksago, I said, this is Paul
(01:31:41):
McCartney, you know, singing andplaying. And well, it turns out
this particular song, no the bassguitar player fellow by the name of Hamish
Stewart, is actually the one whois singing on this song. Now in
the background of various points, youhear McCartney kind of all out a little
bit and you recognize his voice immediately. But it's very important to point out
(01:32:03):
that although this is Paul McCartney andhis band playing this unplugged version, it's
actually, as I say, HamishStewart, whose voice you will hear singing
the song. So Paul McCartney unpluggedAin't No Sunshine, Hamish Stewart on vocals
here on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. You ain't no suns shine when she's
(01:33:00):
gone. On the darkness every day, ain't no sunshine when she's gone.
And this house just ain't no homeanytime she goes away. Wonder this time
(01:33:27):
where she's gone, Is she reallygone to stay? Ain't no sunshine when
she's gone? She's always gone toolong anytime she goes away. I know
(01:33:49):
why no one, no one,no I, no I, no one,
no I, no I, noone, no no one, No
I know when no no I norI can leave no bag alone. There
ain't no sunshine when she's gone.Who ain't no sunshine when she's gone?
(01:35:09):
Ain't you really gone to stay?Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. But
she's always gone too long anytime shegoes away, anytime she goes away,
(01:35:34):
anytime she goes away, anytime shegoes to it, ain't no sunshine,
(01:36:01):
yea. And they go all right, then you hear some kind of messing
around there with the acoustic equipment. So we're just going to call that one
just a great version of that songright with that little trap drum kit and
just when it's stripped down like that. By the way, that is just
an amazing Hamish Stewart, you know, if you look into the histories of
(01:36:24):
some of these artists, I mean, they're amazing. He was an original
member of the Average White Band. He's course from Glasgow, Scotland. As
my friend Martin Hanna would have likelypointed out, it's amazing how many musicians
are from Glasgow and Hamish Stewart. There is certainly a great one. The
next song we're gonna play for youhere. We've got about another twenty minutes
(01:36:45):
in this edition of the Coast HighwayShuffle Show. Thank you for listening and
thank you for supporting FM radio herein Laguna Beach on k XFM one oh
four point seven or go check usout online and you know, if you're
healing up to it, you know, it's tax deductible, make a donation,
help keep us on the air. That's k XFM Radio dot org,
(01:37:08):
k x FM Radio dot o RG. All right, the next song I'm
gonna play is by a woman whoI remember when I heard her for the
first time. I was watching TV. I was watching the Johnny Carson Show
and it was late, you know, obviously, and she came on.
(01:37:30):
I'd never heard of her before.I'm referring to a singer by the name
of k d Lang out of Canada, and she sang and my mouth just
dropped. I remember how gobsmacked Iwas listening to her for the first time.
I'd never heard a voice, quiteso beautifully powerful, quite so clear.
(01:37:54):
So I just became a huge fanof hers and still am a huge
fan of her. And the songI'm Gonna Play for You Now is off
her second album, an album,an amazing album by the way, if
you don't have it, download itby it. Yeah, you just get
it. It's an album called Angenueand the name of the song I'm Gonna
(01:38:15):
Play for You is not one ofthe hit songs off this album, but
it's so cool. I heard thisand that's why I picked it. When
I was out hiking. I listenedto my music and I've got thousands and
thousands of songs, and I pickfrom those songs to play music for you.
And as I heard this song outhiking a couple of days ago,
I was struck by its sensuality.When you hear this, it's there's a
(01:38:41):
dark sensuality to it that is sounusual but so captivating, and I think
you're going to pick it up rightaway too. This is kd Lang Season
of the Hollow Soul here for youon the Coast Highway Shuffle show Key to
(01:39:06):
the Shifting Wind. I've been toit, life to it. These kisses
of sinder must stab behind saw thefoot of neglect, the core of my
(01:39:26):

why else endure the season of hardsoul, the ground on which you
(01:39:51):

(01:41:14):
my reason? Why else in seealmost must wise and the seas which relieve
(01:42:16):
strange with yours to see so badmust reason whilse in the season? Now
(01:43:36):
come on? That is a cool, cool song. I love the bass
playing on that. By the way, that is Katie Lange Season of the
Hollow Soul. Wow, talk abouta song title that really speaks to the
darkness of that tune. You're listeningto KXFM. This is the Coast Highway
Shuffle Show. I've got fifteen minutesof music before I turn the rains to
(01:44:00):
the very able bodied and amazingly talentedDJ who follows me. And I'm of
course talking about my good buddy JimmyAlvarez and he does t n N Radio
at noons or thereby. It's alot of times I go a little over.
We're just kind of sharing that space. But I'm going to try to
get out on time for him today, and so stick around listen for Jimmy
(01:44:23):
Alvarez and t N Radio coming upnext. At the start of this show,
I mentioned that I'd been out lastweek because I spent a week down
in Baja with three buddies, thefour of us when surfing. We had
a great time, great food. When you're with your a group of four
guys in basically a condo for aweek and it's baking hot outside, you
(01:44:47):
end up coming inside a lot justto cool off, and when you're inside
you end up listening to music.Because we had no TV, or at
least we didn't use the TV,so all that week I was listening and
sharing music, of course, butalso listening to the music that my three
buddies brought down there. And ifyou're lucky enough to have friends that have
(01:45:08):
good taste in music, well youmight sometimes be in a situation where for
a week you're sitting with them ina Mexican desert playing music and when that
happens, sometimes you really find somegems. Of course, there's a lot
you hear that you think, ohmy gosh, please make it stop.
And I'm sure they felt that wayabout some of the music I played.
(01:45:30):
But there was a lot of greatmusic played. And one artist, a
friend, Mike Hardy, who wasthere, one of the guys, played
some of and this is an artistby the name of Tom Waits. And
I have to admit that, althoughI know how respected he is and I
know some of his work, he'sone of those artists that's been around since
the early seventies that I still needto spend some time with and learn more
(01:45:54):
of. And Mike is a bigfan of Tom Waits. And we right
to his second album, Tom Waite'ssecond album that is, which is called
The Heart of Saturday Night. Thiscame out in nineteen seventy four. It
was an album that that Tom Waitswrote as a tribute to Jack Kerouac.
(01:46:15):
And there's some great songs on thisalbum. But the one that we played
that night I'm going to share withyou now is one off that album called
New Coat of Paint. So whenyou talk about American singer songwriters, Tom
Waits has gotta be on that list, and I think you'll enjoy this song.
Tom Waits, new coat of painthere for you, fresh off the
(01:46:38):
griddle, here at KXFM. Let'sgo an cot of pain. All as
(01:47:14):
long as Motown said, I'm mother, We'll bet I gone undown. You'll
wear a dress, baby, Iwear a tie. We'll laugh at that
olden bloodshot and moon in that burgingdisky. All I scribbled love dreams,
(01:48:04):
lost, thrown away, ever,a missy shuffle, loving over flowing days.
Love means a transfusion. Let's shootingfor the wine. Fishing for a
good time starts with throwing in yourlines less butter her cut of fame,
(01:48:55):
honey lit, awesome, more timeset up. I'm up, sat,
I'm up, wibling, nig on, I'm down. You wear a dress,
baby, I wear a tie. Will never that old blood shotting moon
in that burg in the sky,all right. Gotta love that there,
(01:50:00):
that is Tom Waits with new codeof paint. Gotta love that boozy kind
of jin joint juke joints sound thathe guys on that album. Tom Waits
going to be listening to a lotmore him. I promise you that We're
gonna keep the music going here. We're gonna try to squeeze a couple more
in before it's time to say goodbye. This next song I'm gonna play is
by Genesis off the Duke album cameout in nineteen eighty and when this was
(01:50:24):
recorded, Phil Collins in particular wasstruggling with a failing marriage, which eventually
did fail, and so many ofthe songs on this album, as well
as his first solo album called FaceValue, a lot of the songs on
both those albums were really written andinfluenced by the pain and sadness of his
(01:50:45):
failing marriage. And I think thisis one of those songs that just get
you right in the heart. Iremember living in Manhattan Beach, I just
graduated from college. I was solucky to find a little one bedroom apartment
and up there and I would putthis album on constantly, this album called
Duke by Genesis, And so thisbrings back some real fond memories. This
(01:51:10):
is Please Don't Ask. Listen tothe lyrics and you'll hear him essentially having
a dialogue with the woman who hewould eventually end up divorcing. This is
k x FM, Please Don't lastme feel I'll feel fine, I'll cry
(01:51:47):
up a bit. I'll don't say, but I'm fine. Wind can use
you, wink your eye, touchyou can naty hu us myself was our
(01:52:15):
wrong the times up era and notI get strong? Maybe we be trying
(01:52:40):
onlybe we would work this time.I can't be the by when it was
easy to say I love and shamesince that, now I say, I
(01:53:03):
say I can try away. It'syour wells as, but enough meat.
(01:53:41):
Tell me how you you put yourlast way? I could see each night.
(01:54:02):
Maybe we should try. I don'tsays I know why pushed now unless
it is I love my nation changestand now, I really says, but
(01:54:39):
I try side where love well Iwas li Just a heartbreaking song there by
(01:55:18):
Genesis, specifically Phil Collins. Pleasedon't ask. We got two songs left
to play for you. This firstone, I think will put a smile
on your face. It always doeson to me. This is Joe walshof
is average or ordinary average Guy album? This is ordinary average Guy here on
KHXFM understand more than ary Ever isguy. My friends are boring and so
(01:56:29):
am I. We're just wary everrich guys. We only neary ever is
