(00:06):
Ah, good morning, Laguna Beach. It is eleven am on Monday,
and that means it's time for anotheredition of the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
We're starting a few minutes early. That was unexpected. We had to jump

(00:27):
on the controls and make sure wehit play, and we did. And
here we are. Of course,we've got cal Jader behind me there doing
a little walk on by. Alwaysa wonderful way to start a show.
This is a special Monday, andthis is a very special edition of the

(00:48):
Coast Highway Shuffle Show because i havea guest in here today that I've been
looking forward to having in the studiofor quite some time, a personal friend,
a long time resident of Laguna,a very accomplished musician, and just
an all around good guy. I'mreferring to mister Jeff Glass. Jeff,
welcome to the studio. Thanks Steve, always the pleasure. Ah, And

(01:11):
I'll say what as the as themusical pro you are. I watched you
move the mic and you centered itperfectly. There's no coaching going on here.
I'm dealing with a pro. Sowonderful to have you here. And
by the way, may I startoff by saying happy birthday. Well,
thank you. Today is my birthdaymyself. I don't feel a day over

(01:32):
sixty nine. Oh wait, Iam exactly a day over sixty nine.
I feel exactly one day over sixtynine. Oh boy, Well, I'll
tell you look great. You stayin good shape. That helps you play
a ton of music, and Iknow that it keeps the spirit and the
soul youthful. So today we're goingto play music that you have brought in.

(01:52):
ID love to do that, andyou know what a great way to
celebrate your birthday, but to celebratethe muck that you love and kind of
defines you to an extent, rightyep? And now what was the process
you went through when I said, hey, you got to bring in two
hours worth of music to play onMonday. What was your process? My
first thought was I need eight orten. But actually I started by going,

(02:17):
Okay, who's the first music?First song I really liked? And
then it was like a where didI go from there? Yeah? And
then I kind of lost track ofthat, and so I started with that
and then I just started coming upwith songs. I must have been in
a really introspective mood because I gota lot of sad songs in your beautiful

(02:38):
written songs. But then on theother end, I got a lot of
a lot of instrumentals, so we'llsee. Yep. It was interesting because
a lot of what you first cameover with, or what you sent me
in some of the information that yousent was a lot of jazz and a
lot of really kind of like alot of Charlie Parker and you know,

(03:00):
a lot of really cool jazz. And we talked about it, and I
said, you know, although thisis free form radio and we can play
whatever we want, it is allrocks, so we try to lean towards
something a little more I'll say,you know, kind of popular or not
rock accessible maybe, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Well, I
tell you that when I was firstthe first song I had bought a record

(03:24):
of was Incense and Peppermints. Wow. And then I went from there to
you and I talked about it.The Black Sabbath Grand Function Railroad. Incense
in Peppermint to Black Sabbath is aIt's a leap of faith, not near
as much as the leap from thereI was. I went to a record
store junior year in high school andbought a Charlie Parker record. Wow,

(03:45):
at that point my life changed.I thought, they do that without amplifiers
and it's just as powerful. Sothere was a period of many years where
it was pretty much all jazz. But I understand how old when you got
Charlie Parker seventh grade? Yeah,no, no, junior year in high
school, senior, between junior andsenior year. I think I bought it.
Wow, I went Jesus is great. That that automatically, whether anyone

(04:09):
else knew it or not, thatautomatically made you the coolest kid instead.
I know at the time it maynot have felt like it, but my
gosh, listening to Parker as ajunior in high school, Wow, oh,
I blew me away absolutely anyway. And then I went to Coltrane and
and good knows, God knows whatelse. Well, and your you know
you've had a career in jurisprudence,if I may, sure, And you've

(04:31):
recently about a year ago retired.Well, I stopped working a year ago.
I retired five years ago. Theygot brought me back. Why do
I just feel about seventy four casesare going to be uh now challenged for
reopening? Well, I know Ichecked out earlier. Maybe that's not the

(04:51):
right word. But I started collectingcrosswood puzzles in twenty fifteen, ah,
in anticipation of retiring. Ok.Have you been tapping into those? Oh?
I have. I still got apretty big stack. All bad.
That's a lot. That's a lotto go through la times and retirement,
as we know. But if youneed to go to it's good to go
to that stack. Yep, that'sright by the way. Are you a

(05:13):
New York Times New York Times?Okay, there you go. I figured
what's his name? Shots? Shotsyou know? If? Yeah, that's
right? It is it Steve.No. No, I gotta let our
listeners know because you may be familiarwith Jeff's name. If you don't know
his name, you definitely know hishis image because he's a very prolific musician

(05:34):
here around town. A bass playerin the Blues Offenders, bass player in
the Agave Brothers, most notably,I would say, for longevity and current
activity, a prominent bass player, member of Skeleton Crew. And don't forget
the uh whoever we went down theMexican playing with you, we did do

(05:58):
it. We don't forget that.Yeah no, yeah, no, you're
right, that's right. You've we'vewe've played in a number. I've had
the honor to play in a coupleof those bands with you, which has
just been a joy. But ifyou're a fan of the Skeleton Crew,
and there are a lot of fanshere in town, you guys are,
by the way, playing at theCoach House. You're headlining Saturday night,
the twenty ninth. It's still acouple of tickets available, you guys,

(06:21):
if you like Grateful Dead music orjust like live music out in a great
location with what will be a verylocal crew in the audience, there's everyone
in town's talking about going. Youwant to see the Skeleton Crew at the
Coach House on the twenty ninth. It's it's just going to be a fantastic
show, so deep musical connections. And when it was your birthday and I

(06:45):
got wind of it, I said, speaking of music, come on in
and let's play some. So withoutfurther ado, let's let's move into today's
The first we're going to song we'regonna play is by Leo Kottke. Tell
us about this particular song, Yeah, well it's a little Martha and I
think written by Dwayne Olman on opentuning and his version is great, but

(07:09):
I like Leo Cocky's because you don'thear it very much. And it's just
a beautiful song. A twelve stringLeococky and Naleo and it's a very very
sweet song. I don't know whoMartha was or why she was so little.
I just love the song. Well, that's a wonderful way to start
this show. You are listening tothe Coast Higway Shuffle Show. My name

(07:30):
is Steve Reid. I have theesteem Jeffrey Glass here with me for two
hours of live radio. We arestarting off with Leo Cootke Little Martha here
on k x FM. Isn't thata beautiful song? What a beautiful song

(09:11):
to kick this off? Man?Thank you Leo Coocky Little Martha. Yeah,
yeah, he's he's great. Isaw him with Leon Redbone years and
years ago. Wow, that wasmy first exposure to him, I guess
in person, but oh man,it's such a good was I was I
even in the ballpark By saying thatthat version, the Leococky version we just

(09:31):
played reminded me a little bit ofhot tune. We got some more hot
tuning here, absolutely, Yeah, just that just that just that sound.
It's such it's so evocative. Thatfingerstyle stuff is so good. It's almost
like painting a musical masterpiece. Ohwhat is he doing there? He nice?
Nice, thank you. It's likethis. I like this song because

(09:52):
being in a Grateful Dead band,I knew I had to play some Grateful
Dead and there actually, since I'mso engrossed in it, there's it's absolute
impossible to pick the best song orthe most exciting song, interesting and of
all of them, because it's like, Okay, this night I like Jack
Straw, but this night I likesomething else, which is part of the
fun of the Grateful Dead band becauseevery night it changes, the band changes,

(10:16):
what you like changes. Oh,by the way, at the Sawdust
the coach House, yep, we'reopening Actors as Storytellers, which is an
acoustic band that plays music like this, like the next song and crew they're
gonna they're a great show too.So are they from southern California? A

(10:37):
local band, local band, fairlylocal. I think they've got a wider
reach than maybe even we do.But I have to ask you a question
when when a band headlines as youare at the coach House on June twenty
ninth, we're talking about Skeleton Crew. Do you guys pick the opening band.
Do you select and you say here'swho we'd like to open for us,
or does the venue no for us? We can play the whole night

(11:01):
and we've done that before, orwe can say, well, let's bring
in somebody. We brought in aTom Petty group one time, a bunch
of different tribute bands. But thenthe Storytellers came up, and we've always
wanted to play with them, AndI wondered, who called those shots?
Not surprising? It should be theheadlining band, should be the one that

(11:22):
makes that call. Yeah. Sowhen I was trying to pick a Grateful
Dead song, hey, I alsohad I noticed there was a paucity of
Bob Dylan songs. I thought,I'll kill two birds with one stone and
this song. I love this songbecause he's talking about being in Rome and
he describes Rome and I happened tomy wife and I just love Rome.

(11:43):
And he describes the Spanish steps andit's like, ah, yeah, it
takes me back every time to thattrip. So that's got a personal connection.
So I killed three birds with onestone, which makes you a menace
to society. Technically the too manypeta Peter p e t a will be
coming after and saying, look hekilled three yeah, stop killing birds?

(12:07):
All right? Well, this isJeff Glass joining us today on the Coast
Highway Shuffle Show, and the songhe selected next is the Grateful Dead's when
I paint my masterpiece here on kexcept him? Oh the street is the

(12:35):
room were filled with page and footpants? Ever, when will you get
off off thing? Bit's just seeit double on the cool dark, not

(12:58):
on the Spanish. Do you gota back to my hotel? Where I
got me? Body? Tell usniece, she come bess, she directed,

(13:26):
where are pay? My master pieceheld inside the car the sea dog

(13:56):
line west and west. Time forthose mighty teeths with the chump lock of
heart stand the seal really scho hasbeen love drinking of wheels. Roll one

(14:20):
two, back of my man. We're running out the hill top following a
pack of way some day. Lackof these sweet lack of a speed were
up my master. Fel you don'tlet in the persons see back out of

(16:00):
almost cry. You'll turn out anyoler that's as muscle that shot may s
think he can't cony had down bysome day agains Conoy, Different Naster someday

(16:51):
me Conomy did my master my masterpiece. You know, with a live Grateful

(17:27):
Dead song, you have to knowwhen the music stops and you can kind
of cut short the song because there'sa lot of applause there and tuning and
tune exactly, chit chat on thestage. Oh man, I'll tell you
so again, Grateful Dead there. The name of that cut was when I
paint my Masterpiece. And it's kindof fun to play that with Jeff Glass

(17:48):
because his band Skeleton Crew will beplaying at the Coach House on June twenty
ninth. I'm going to hype thatgig a couple of times during the show
because I tell you what I'm goingto be there. I can't I can't
count on both hands all my friendsthat are going. And it's just a
lot of fun. It's such aloose, festive, engaged performance. It's

(18:11):
really a lot of fun. Itell you what. We were playing the
third or fourth time we played downsecond or third time, I looked out
and all the tables in front ofus were empty, and I thought,
oh my god, are we drivingpeople away? Then I looked on my
left and that people in the audiencesaid, taking away the table. Yeah,
over to the left, the stageright, and we're all dancing.

(18:33):
Everybody was up dancing and it wasmade it. I thought, oh,
thank god, they're not leaving.I'll tell you what. I'll tell you
what I think that's probably gonna happenon the Would it make sense to talk
to management at the coach house andsay, hey, whre's what we expect.
Can you guys accommodate? They knownow we've done that, We've done
that to set aside dancing room.Well, and if I'm in there dancing,
I'll stand out like a sore thumb. I'm like a big Q tip,

(18:56):
this big white tip, clear abig space where you've got a light,
long wingspan. I love my music, buddy. What can I say?
The next song we have by JeffGlass coming in to day to celebrate
his birthday live on Eric KXFM isa song by Lou Rawls. Came out
in seventy six. What is thissong you've picked? Well, it's uh,

(19:18):
you'll never find and I picked itbecause of the tone of the voice,
his voice, My wife and Ihave my orfel. You're horful only
reason for living. I love it, my orful our song together is my
one and only love is John Coltranewith Johnny Hartman singing, And it didn't

(19:40):
quite fit. But I wanted thatlow baritone or bass voice, and I
thought, okay, lou Rawls isgood enough. When I've been in biting
or stay up late or something inthe morning, I can a little bit.
Oh wow, yeah, Lou rollye. I can't sing it,
but I try and and of coursethat annoys everybody in the house. But

(20:03):
anyway, that this song is uha substitute for my own one and only
love, for my rafel. Andand by the way, may I just
call her out by name. You'retalking about your lovely wife, Deborah Whoho
just is just a force of natureand just a sweetheart. You guys have
been married how long now? Oh? I knew you were going to ask.
Oh, sorry, I have tolook at my time. Now thirty

(20:26):
two. I think it'd be no, thirty five, Yeah, be thirty
five in November. I didn't meanthat to be a trick question, but
I know the feeling right when youwhen you know you're live on air on
radio, and so asks you avery specific question you do want to get
it right, especially since I'm surethat you're rifled. She's listening right now
screaming at the Fortunately she put iton the inside of my rings, so

(20:51):
I can verify thirty five this November. Wow, Well to both of you.
Then I'll never listen to this songagain, by the way, without
thinking of you and doing that baritonewalking around in my underwear. And well,
you didn't need to add that rope. Let's put it a rope,
all right. This is Steve Reidwith Jeff Glass here live in in studio

(21:15):
kx FM, Lagoon is only FM. This is Lou Rawls off his All
Things in Time album. You'll neverfind another love like mine. You never

(22:03):

You never find no matter where yousearch, someone who cares about you the

(22:32):

II am Paolo Prieto from the MikeJohnson Group of Compass, and I listened
to Human Crafted Radio online at kxf M Radio dot Org Munity to to

(32:22):
it's a little too early in themorning for something that sexually man oh man.
That was Gatto Barbieri from the fromhis album Caliente nineteen seventy six,
forty years before he passed. Wow. Yes, between that and lou Rawls
pretty steamy in here. I'm justgoing to say, you know, if
I may say, your lovely wifeDeborah's hearing these songs. She's probably now

(32:45):
locked herself in a bathroom. She'sprobably barricaded the door. More thing is
terrified. Yeah. No, whenif this comes on the house, yeah,
the door starts slamming. I wasjust gonna say, when anyone hears
got to Barbieri in the Glass Household, they go into lockdown mode. Nineteen
seventy six, that's when Rolls didit too. That's yeah, that must

(33:07):
have been a formative year for me. Yeah, you were in college.
Then where did you go to college? If I may ask, Amherst College
in Massachusetts? Oh? Nice? And then yeah, so, but you
came out to California approximately when Californiaeighty two. I worked in Minnesota and
they had an office in Newport Beach, and that was an easy decision.

(33:30):
No one is on record as havingtwisted your own. That's absolutely true.
Oh gosh, you're listening to KXFM. This is the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
My name is Steve Reid, andI'm here with my good buddy,
an amazing musician and as we're findingout on this show, kind of a
wonderful musicologist of sorts. I'm referringto Jeff Glass Lagoon, his own Jeff

(33:52):
Glass, and that was got toBarbieri. As you heard Jeff comment.
Now we're going to move forward withsomething. The next three songs are gonna
play. We do something here onthe show called a headset where we play
three songs without interruption, without commentary, back to back to back. If
you happen to have a set ofheadsets, put them on because it sounds

(34:14):
great. But if not, justknow you'll hear the next three songs back
to back to back. And I'mgonna let Jeff introduce these three songs before
I hit play. All right, there was a time when I was playing
music where I played well, Istill play surf music whenever I can.
So I picked out two surf songsand I thought, just to balance that,

(34:37):
I need another Leo Kocky type song. But so I'm going with Hot
Tuna and with the big band, with the band or the electric band,
and then low Strait Jackets are doingan old old song called Sing Sing Sing.
Okay, that's one of the surfsongs. That's one of the surf
songs. And Apatche is the othersurf song, and that's done by a

(34:59):
band call the Shadows. Shadows Yeahokay, I think they're from England.
But it's just typical of the surfsongs. It's not necessarily the best one.
But if you love surf songs, which we do here at KXFM,
because we're right here on Pearl Streetin the Highway. The name, by
the way of the Hot Tuna songthat you picked is water Song, Water

(35:22):
Song, So there is a waterwater theory here that beat songs, surf
songs, water song to start itout there, I love it. It's
a stretch, but that's what Ido without further ado. This is what
maybe we may do a couple headsetson the show. Who knows we're doing
everything just as it makes sense todo here on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.

(35:45):
You've heard the headset introduced by misterJeff Glass. Let's get it going,
starting with Hot Tuna, then LowStreet Jackets, followed by the Shadows.
You are listening the lagoon is onlyfm K s excep oh boy k
as where'd that? I don't know? All right, chances, here we

(36:05):
go, Here we go a lam hm. Put your sweet lips a

(41:34):
little closer to the phone. Let'spretend that we're twogether all along. I'll
tell the man to turn the jukeboxs way down load and you can tell

(41:59):
your friend there with you. He'llhave to go whisper to me. Tell
me do you love me true?Or is he holding you? The way

(42:20):
I do thou lovest blind, makeup your mind. I've got to know.
Should I hang up or will youtell him he'll have to go.

(42:42):
You can't say the words I wantto be while you with another man.
Do you want me answer yes orno? Darling, I will understand.
Put your sweet lips a little closerto the phone. Let's pretend then we're

(43:10):
two together, all alone. I'lltell the man to turn the juke box
sway down load and you can tellyour friend there with you. You have

(43:31):
to go. Now, listeners tothe station heard me do something that I
didn't intend to do. It happensin live radio. I introduced our headset
and after playing water song by Hatuna, we were gonna hear Low Stray Jackets

(43:52):
and then the Shadows. But asong crept into the playlist suddenly, and
we just played through that, andthat was Jim Reeves, He'll have to
go. I believe everything has areason behind it, so I'm not sure
why Jim Reeves suddenly popped up.But you have a story about this song.
I do have a story. Oneof the things, as a judge,

(44:15):
I have to be pretty protective ofmy privacy, and now I don't
care now, but I go bythe stage name cry Baby Montana. The
name came from I played for aboutsix months with in the initial stages of
a band called Buck Naked and thechap Chiefs, through the local band with
George Dubin and Steve McIntosh and ScottMoore and the pedal steel player Mike.

(44:40):
But they rehearsed in my bedroom,my extra bedroom. The very first song
we played was that song He'll haveto Go, He'll have to Go.
And afterwards I said, that hasgot to be the saddest song I've ever
heard. And one of them, maybe all of them, said, oh,
you're a big cry baby. Andso thatx sandel was cry Baby Montana.
So that's I've you know what,I've known you now probably gosh,

(45:06):
twenty five years at least, andI know you go by cry Baby Montana.
You have a Facebook that's cry BabyMontana. I never heard that story
before. That's that's the reason. And that was I thought, well,
that's as good a name as any. That is so cool. So that
is the source he'll have to goby. Jim Reeves is the source of
really what is a nickname that Ithink a lot of your friends in town

(45:27):
know, but I don't know ifanyone knows who the story. I don't
know that they do. But that'sexactly the story, and it is a
terribly said suck. We got abunch of sets that's coming up through,
but that's that story. That songneeded to be played because that story needed
to be told, and so weinterrupted our own three song set. We're
going to get back to that rightnow. Following Hot Tuna that you heard,

(45:50):
We're now going to play Low StraightJackets, Sing Sing Sing, and
the Shadows with Apache here Steve Reidwith Jeff Glass on the Coast Highway Shuffle
Show. That still number. Sothe next days numbers say members, I

(47:02):
wouldn't say, you give me yourpres I think that the name because the

(48:02):
Sanaday Saturday and Saturday Dances Bad SaisSands had specifics repolis a wil no a

(50:00):
man a love lass oh man.You know we are waxing here hard.

(52:19):
Whoops, we're waxing hard here aboutsurf music here in the studio. Had
to run over and grab the buttonhere real quick before we get into our
next song. That those last twosongs again Low Straight Jackets, which I
love their look right. Oh,yeah, identical black suits. They were
Lucha libre wrestling masks and they playsurf music. Come on, it didn't

(52:39):
get better than that. They doit. There's an absolute great version of
My Heart Will Go On doing liveon Conan O'Brien. Look it up on
YouTube. It was nineteen ninety nineand they say a tribute to the greatest
singer of this or any millennial andit's what's her name is? Dion But
it is such a great version, and when they do it live it is

(53:02):
really funny. That is awesome. And then of course I was followed by
a band called The Shadows with avery cool song there called Apache so a
little surf tune, little surf music, which I'm glad you brought those in
because Jeff, I know you musicallyto cover a lot of genres, and
a lot of people that know youas you play in these bands in town

(53:22):
know you as a bass player.But you're you're You're I don't want to
say your first love, that's foryou to say, but I know how
deeply connected you are to jazz guitarin particular, you know, and so
you know, for you to playsurf music or jazz, Brazilian jazz.

(53:42):
I mean that's where I've seen youshine. Well. I'm not a very
good guitar player, but I gota lot of interest. I love to
play surf music, your earnest fingerstyle. Yeah, yeah, I'm committed in
tune or not, I'm still committed. Can I tell him about the next
two songs? I hope you wouldwith two more. I play guitar,

(54:05):
but I play bass my years.Okay, you know, in terms of
picking up stuff, I cannot sing. So I love songs, but I
never could understand the words to singthem, or I don't really listen to
the words except for coming up.So the next song, anyway, is
a beautiful song by Don McClean, but it's done instrumentally by Chad Atkins,

(54:27):
who's a real icon and just abeautiful guitar player. And then following that,
we'll have another Contrary to norm you'dhave to say Frank Zappa. Everybody
knows Frank zapfr for the funny stuff, for the scatological stuff, for the
very complicated stuff. This is avery, very pretty composition by him.

(54:52):
So I've got to have two backto back. One had words, the
other one I don't think ever hadany words. One called twenty Small Cigars
and I thought, just really coolsongs. I'm so, I'm so glad
you brought these in. The Onlything that I learned about Vincent, which
yeah, we love the don McLeanthe original and as you said, this
will be in, this will beChad Atkins. One thing I learned about

(55:15):
the song did I did not knowthat that it was a favorite of the
rapper Tupac Shakur in factally, infact, it was such a favorite song
of his that when he had beenshot in Las Vegas and eventually died and
they brought him into the medical centerin Southern Nevada, they put this song

(55:37):
on the hospital sound system for TupacShakur to listen to to his final in
his final moment. Oh my god, who would have known? Right?
Wow, the power? Wow.Okay, let's give Tupac a call out.
All the songs going on? Wow. Okay. So this is Vincent
played by ched Adkins, followed byTwenty Small Cigars. Frank Zappa here with

meteorologist Dave Murray for KXFM one ohfour point seven Laguna Beach. Hey,
this is Mollymore and you're listening toKXFM Radio dot org. And you're listening
to KXFM and the Coast Highway ShuffleShow. This is Steve Reed at the
halfway mark of today's show, whichI am so excited to say has the

(01:05:23):
presence and involvement and the curation ofmister Jeff Glass here in the studio.
Jeff at the halfway mark, doyou need carbohydrates? Do you need fluids?
You look good man, You're hangingin there. It's all downhill.
We climbed the hill. Now youcan just cruise on down. It is
all downhill in more ways than one, in more ways than one. Now,

(01:05:45):
earlier in the show, we playeda headset, which again is we
play three songs back to back toback without break, although we did have
a little issue with that. Wesqueezed a fourth song in that needed to
be told because it explained the historyof cry Baby Montana. But now we're
going to do another headset. Sothe next three songs, Jeff's going to
introduce and tell you a little bitabout him, and then I'm going to

(01:06:10):
hit play and we'll play these threesongs back to back to back perfect.
You know, I said, Idon't sing and I don't really listen to
words, but these three songs havegot words that I think just show the
songwriter craft nice in a beautiful way. And the first one's called Martha.
It's by Tom Waits from I thinkfrom his Closing Time album. And yes,

(01:06:35):
it is from Closing Time. Yeah, and that's probably seventy six now
I think it was seventy two, seventy three. But what's great about this
song. One of the things aboutthis song, he's talking with somebody he
used to have a relationship with andhe The entire song is we I had
I loved you, This was agreat thing. I'm sorry, I screwed

(01:06:57):
up. Sorry, I screwed up. I loved you, lovlov ed past
tense. Then the last time hesays it, it's present tense. Oh
yeah, So you got to goback listen to it and listen to it,
and you understand he's talking to somebodyhe knew a long time ago and
he still loves them, and itcomes out and I'm sure it was on

(01:07:17):
purpose. But when I first noticedthat, I just blew my mind.
So that's a beautiful song. Apparently, Closing Time was his debut album in
nineteen seventy three. It's got Oldfifty five on it. It's got Closing
Time on it. Another great songabout lost love. Clearly you must have

(01:07:38):
album. You need to learn him. The next song after that is David
Bromberg's Watching Baby Fall, and it'sa father looking at his son from growing
up and how parents and fathers. This is a father day song and it's

(01:08:03):
just a beautiful song about watching theirbaby fall and not being able to do
anything about it and letting them ontheir own. And it's not a happy
song. So then the last songis another album I wore out called Tom
Rush. I didn't realize he didn'twrite it. But he didn't write this

(01:08:25):
song. I don't know who did. It's on that album, by the
way, is These Days, whichis also could have been on the list.
But this is called child Song, and it's about leaving, leaving home,
and so I brought tears to myeyes when I left home, and

(01:08:45):
it brought tears to my eyes whenmy children left home. And it's going
to crack me up. I thinkwe're gonna have to do a station break
after this because I think that's goingto bring tears to my eyes. Anyway.
I'm a crier, so you're notdoing me any favorite, brother,
I'm going to be a mess.I'm going to be We won't listen to
it. We'll put on some othermusic while everybody else listens to it.

(01:09:06):
But three absolutely brilliant songs. Noneof them are all that happy, but
it shows the songwriter's craft. Andfor somebody who doesn't sing and barely knows
the words to Happy Birthday, theseare great songs. Well said mister Jeff
Glass here in the studio on kx FM. A parade number please spend

(01:09:47):
so many years. She remembers myvoice while I fight the tears. Hello,

(01:10:42):
all you had was for me.There was no to marbles with pack away

(01:11:11):
Now you're much older. Two?How's her husband? And how's your
kids? You know that I gotmarried to lucky, that they found someone
to make you feel secured? Sweedall. So we are infoolation. Now

(01:11:35):
we are at you and those withthese or horses tre those and Martha.
All I had was you and allthat was me. That was no Tom

(01:12:00):
at with her sms, and wesaved him for reading. Now I was

(01:12:25):
always so explosive. I guess thatI still I am with all the bread
and matches. Then was that Iwas a man? I guess that I
would be to gather was never meantto me, Martha, Martha, I

(01:12:51):
love you, gaddies. She andthose were days uses you between those in
marth or Hard I had to you, and all your admal was me.

(01:13:12):
The was no to marbles black withsorbles. I must say them for raining.
And I remember quiet evenings trembling closeto you. When Tommy was born,

(01:14:08):
he was the light of mine,my own little baby ball. And
I could hardly believe that that onelittle soul could fill up my life with
such joy. You know how itis when a kid learns to walk.

(01:14:28):
When it stumbles, he'll just sitthere and ball. Well, it was
hard. It was sweet as Tomfound his feet to be there to watch
baby fall, Just to be thereto watch baby fall. They grew up
way too fast. Tom was ascam, more and more mand aids than

(01:14:53):
falls. Tom had more ways andskinny as me than any sex child.
Run right all well, he hechased me away from this ground new two
weeks. I tried to coach himin alle so I watched with pride because

(01:15:15):
he learned around, and I wincedevery time he would fall. But I
stayed there to watch my child fall. Tom didn't like school much. He

(01:15:47):
ran with a cry just how boysgetting their teams. He might have been
a while, but he still ismy child. No one could say he
was me. Well, it wasTom who got caught when the boys robbed
a rich man, and Tom tookthe heat for them all. Judge started

(01:16:14):
best to send my child to jail, and I could do nothing that I
set to stand there and watch myboy. Oh, Tommy's full grown.

(01:16:35):
Now I guess he's a man foundand that lost a good wife. It's
drinking real harden, not getting muchworse. Tom don't want to help everybody.
We still shoot the breeze and I'mbuy him a train, But that

(01:16:58):
whiskey tastes bitter. Is gone. The most god awful thing that I've done
in this life is to stand thereand watch my son fall. Just to
stand there and watch my son fall. You can't learn far of them,

(01:17:19):
and you can't take their pain.Just stand there and watch your child fall.
Just stand there and watch baby fall. Goodbye Mon, good Bye to

(01:18:00):
you too, little sister. You'llhave to wait a while to come along.
Goodbye to this house and all itsmemories. We just got too old
to say we're wrong. You gotto make one last trip to my bedroom.

(01:18:30):
I guess I'll have to leave somestuff behind. It's funny how the
same little crooked pictures just don't seemthe same to me tonight. There ain't

(01:18:54):
no U s shut in bloe mytears. There ain't no use in shouting
at me hard. I can't liveno longer with your fears. I love
you, but that hasn't helped atall. Each of us must do the

(01:19:21):
things that matter. All of usmust see what we can see, though
it was long ago, but youmust remember they were once as young and
as scared as me. I don'tknow how hard it is yet, not

(01:19:54):
when you realize you're growing old.I know how hard it is not to
be younger. I know you've triedto keep me from the court. Thanks

(01:20:15):
for all you've done. It maysound out thank you for the good times
that we've known. But I mustfind my own road now to follow.
You will all be welcome in myown. I've got my sue kids.

(01:20:45):
I must go now. I don'tmind about the things you said. I'm
sorry, mind. I don't knowwhere I'm from, Remember, little sister,
look ahead, Carol, I'll bein some of the sunrise. Maybe

(01:21:16):
I'll have someone at my side.I'm gonna give your love back to your
husband, your father. You havetaught me well. Goodbye, goodbye Mom,

(01:21:41):
Goodbye to you too. Beautiful songthere by Tom Rushed in that particular
headset you're listening to k XFM.This is the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
My name is Steve Reid and Iam joined in the studio today by Jeff
Glass and we are going through twohours of music that Jeff brought in.

(01:22:03):
That was a beautiful set. Jeff, you know it's it's pretty sad.
Actually, it's kind of sad.Butt's wrong with that? You know?
I didn't come here to dance?Well, I tell you what. Let's
change the pace. Okay, let'slet's go with It's another instrumental. It's
a remake of a song closely associatedwith exotic dancers or as they say in

(01:22:29):
Detroit, the windsor ballet windsor Canada. And it's Danny Gatton with Harlem Nock
turn. Can I can I justsay before we hit planned this song,
there are some songs that I associatespecifically with you and you and I in
the past. It's been a fewyears, but we've done kind of little

(01:22:50):
gigs that you've you've booked, andyou'll play guitar and I play a little
percussion. In the first couple oftimes you did it, this song always
got into the X. So I'vedone it with you a couple of times.
And so anytime I hear this songHarlem Nocturn, I think of you.
You're you. It's indelibly attached.I wish I could play it like

(01:23:13):
Danny Gatton. All right, thisis Jeff Glass Steve Reid here with Danny
Gatton's version of Harlem Nocturn here onk x F M A man An it

(01:32:01):
Highway Shuffle Show, I'm Steve Reidand I'm here with Jeff Glass. We've
got a half hour left. AsJeff mentioned to me a minute ago,
And it always happens when we doa show like this, there's always that
moment where you go gosh, we'veonly got a half hour left, you
know, how does the time goso quickly? But I want to thank
you for listening and thank you foryour support of KXFM, Laguna's little FM

(01:32:24):
station that can. While we're broadcastingnow, a very talented group of managers
is out there talking about navigating thefuture for the station. So I just
want to leave you with the messagewe're here, we're here to stay and
we need your support. So thankyou for listening, and if you get
a chance, go online at KXMFMdotorg and help us stay around by giving

(01:32:48):
a small donation. We'd appreciate it. All. Right back to the last
half hour, My gosh, Jeffof this edition, you know, and
Jeff has brought all the music inthat you've been in enjoying. That last
one, as I said, wasJoan Armit trading. And this next one,
I gotta admit I didn't know them. This is a band called Red
Elvis's, Red Elvis's they are.They're Slavic. I don't know if they're

(01:33:14):
Russian, Ukrainian whatever. We sawhim at the Orange County Fairgrounds years ago.
Did you see him out in aPacific amphitheater. No see them in
the hangar. They were neither. They were in with the bales of hay.
Wow. Yeah, and the bassplayers that has a ball of likea
that's five foot tall and three stringsand if their quasi surf. They're funny,

(01:33:41):
they're really funny. And some ofthe songs are funny, but that's
not appropriate for radio. And thenthis song, which is a pretty song
and it's an instrumental. It's calledAfter the Carnival. And since I saw
him at the fair, I think, well, After the Fair is close
enough. I love it, justa different thing. And if you pull
up any of their other songs, none of them will sound like this,

(01:34:02):
and none of them will really soundlike any of the other ones. Interesting,
really good. So they're very verywide range Vercalctic. I don't know
where they're from. I just haveseen him around here. But I love
how you said they're Slavic. Ijust that's all I need to know.
You had me at Slavic Red Elvis. The Red Elvis is off their album
I Want to See You Belly Dance. Oh yeah, that's another great song.

(01:34:23):
Love that This is called After theCarnival. Here on kx FM,

(01:35:08):
w you know, even language ininnosing thame in the video usual and ascet

(01:38:45):
a. Now, who would haveguessed that a Slavic band called the Red
Elvis'es would play such a beautiful song. That's when you know, Jeff and

(01:39:08):
I were talking. This is SteveReid, and we are about well,
we got twenty minutes left in thisedition of the Coast Highway Shuffle Show.
And one of the things we've talkedabout while music is playing is our own
history with music and our passion forit. And I pointed out to Jeff
that Jeff has this. I don'twant to say it's unique among the musicians,
but among the musicians I know herein town, Jeff definitely is on

(01:39:31):
the right end of the scale, the far into the scale of finding humor
in music, and whether it's ina lyric or in a band name,
or in a live performance or ina set list. And you know,
just your description of the band, you know they're a Slavic band. I
don't know, just it's like that'sjust par for the course. You know,

(01:39:53):
there's always humor in your approach, but that's kind of true in your
approach to life. You're a glassthat full guy, and that's a wonderful
way to be and the humor findsits way. Right, that's not the
trait you want from the judge sittingon your case. Well but here now
here. Only because you brought itup. I must say that although I

(01:40:15):
never came before you, thank god, in a professional capacity, you as
a judge had a reputation of beinga very stern task master, a very
type manager of the court environment. There was not you. You did have
a reputation as being Jeff you know, Judge Glass. That's a that's a

(01:40:38):
heavy serious you know. So it'ssuch a contrast in a way. Yes,
I I think it was a reactionto I don't want to take it
too lightly and be taken advantage of, right, right, But the word
fear comes to me and I'm notjoking. No, I understand that you
had and I can't live down.I regret all that. Oh yeah,

(01:41:00):
and people would say when it comeback to the chambers and I'm laughing and
goofing off, they go, you'renot the same persons out there. Yeah,
I don't know how that happened.I really did not want that to
be my reputation. But not abad if you're a judge, it's not
a bad reputation, right. Itkind of creates stokes a little fear in

(01:41:21):
those that are going into your court, right. That was never my intention
to scare anybody or put fear inthere. I just wanted to make sure
and you know, I might asksome questions that they don't really want to
answer, whatever, But I neverthought I was nasty about it, but
apparently well you had. I thinkyou did a wonderful job. Again,

(01:41:41):
me outside looking in over the yearsand our friendship, you did a very
good job of maintaining a very clearprofessionalism and separation of that role with the
craziness that was going on in Lagoon. I can remember and we'd say,
come on, Jeff, we're doingthis. You're like, no, no,
I'm good. You always you hadsuch respect for the role and and

(01:42:10):
you know, it was just itwas just how you approached it. And
I think that was something that allof us admired over the years, which
is why when you retired and wesaw your your full persona unleashed, it's
been a wonderful joy too. Oneof the best things that happened when I
retired is I could cuss again.Yeah, that's wonderful. We like both

(01:42:33):
versions of you, but one scaredthe hell out of us and the other
we want to have on the radiowith us. So the next song we're
gonna play You have a very personalconnection with the next collar listeners about this.
Can I tell them? The nexttwo songs? Oh, you can,
you can't. The next two songsare Both of them are stand in

(01:42:54):
their own right, but they're specialto me because in the first one,
my son is the drummer, andthe second one my daughter's the violinist and
the singer. Wow. The firstone is the band is I'm Glad it's
you. That is kind of brokenup. Now, there's a backstory to
this album. The song that's thisalbum's from they did it. They recorded

(01:43:16):
it in Baltimore. There's a backstoryI won't go into. And the other
one is from my daughter's Ben MattisLindis. They did this several years ago
and she just played with them yesterday, No, Yes, the Saturday and
Friday up in San Francisco. Thatband is a violin, drummer and bass

(01:43:36):
player, which is an awesome atypical lineup right. It's a different version
of what we'd call a power trio. Yeah, that's right. So anyway
there's we're gonna hear. Well, can I ask you just for our listeners
benefit both your children, Elliott ondrums as you mentioned, Hannah on violin.
You're You're just a musical family.Your wife is an accomplished pianist flute

(01:43:59):
flouting, if I'm right. Sothe I'm Glad at You band, as
you mentioned, that has your sonElliott on the drums, and then the
other band Monos Lindas which does thatmean pretty hands? Yeah? Pretty hands
wow. And that's a song calledJT River and that's where your wonderful daughter
Hannah is playing the violins and singing. Of the four of us, well,

(01:44:26):
when we had a dog, ofthe five of us, I was
I was the least talented. Igot What did you do? Did you
can't tape little symbols to the dog? Dogs out footprints and he patted around
the house. Dog had a betterall I was through it. That's awesome.
All right, two songs back toback here featuring Jeff Glass's amazingly talented

(01:44:49):
kids. Again, I'm glad atyou with every son in every moon,
and you'll hear Elliott Glass on drums, followed by Monos Lindas playing a song
called j T River with his wonderfuldaughter daughter Hannah on violin and vocals.
You're listening to k x f Mand the Coast Highway Shuffle show. Some

(01:54:27):
and the violinist in that sung again, that is Hannah Glass. Jeff's are
Jeff's daughter, our guest in thisstudio today. That's an amazing song.
Didn't that cool? Oh? My? Both of them were. Both of
those songs were absolutely fantastic. Wow. Yeah, I had a bunch to
choose from too. But I don'tknow how you raised two kids that musical

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
