This is the Coin Show Podcast,a podcast about coins and coin collecting from
the perspective of both dealers and collectors, hosted by two guys with a passion
for collecting and a combined experience ofover fifty years in the coin industry.
Here's Matt Dinger and Mike Notdleman onthe coin Show Podcast. And this is
(00:28):
episode two twenty nine of the coinShow Podcast. On this episode of the
coin Show Podcast, we are goingto talk about your coolest thing. We're
going to talk about just shop talkand uh, all that will come after.
That's favorite thing. The news.I love the news. The news
(01:00):
is brought to us by ice. Some have it and don't want it,
some want it and don't have anyice Ice Ice Baby, New Year,
New coins Man. I saw theproof silver eagles are out, the first
(01:23):
of the the first of the commemorativesare coming out. Harriet Tubman is going
to be on the five dollar gold, one dollar silver dollar or one dollar
silver dollar, and fifty cent cladhalf even she looks disappointed about the half
dollar. Okay, who is itright? Clad? She's like, really
(01:44):
clad? Lad? So these arealready available. These are already in the
pipeline. You can order them. They've they've far from sold out, so
we have no problem with this.We were going to cover this last week
and yeah, no, I'm they'reout, but you know that's they're really
They're popping some stuff out early thisyear. The Proof Silver Eagles are the
(02:06):
one that really got me. Normallythose are like midyear type things. So
yeah, so the Proof Silver Eaglesthe first commemorative and uh yeah, there's
a bunch of stuff as well asthe women on Quarters designs have been released
and Matt, no, there isno ambush game on this one. I
know, I know that. SoI I really like these designs. You
(02:32):
know, you got doctor Pouly Murrayor do you say Marie Doctor Mary Edwards
Walker and Celia Cruz and Zitkala sawthe Celia Cruz quarter man. She looks
like she is having a good time. Well that's Celia Cruz. I mean
(02:53):
she was a performer. She washaving a blast. Yeah, and I
really like the Hope does for PoulyMurray. Yeah, that's interesting. I
think it's cool. So, speakingof the first coins released by the US,
ben oh a seventeen ninety two halfteam is up for auction at heritage.
This is probably one of my favoritecoins, even though it's little.
(03:15):
I never like halftimes because they're sosmall. This is just one of those
coins that no matter what you're gonnahave to, you're gonna have it.
Yeah, I mean, I meanI obviously are never gonna have one,
but but true, you can affordone. This is the This is one
of those go to coins. Yes, and this is not the written pause
(03:38):
specimen as we handled uh low sumseven years ago or something like that.
Pardon me, it's coin sold.Just gonna let's see if I can see
what it's sold for. Wow,there it is two and ten thousand grand,
so that's not bad. And itisn't even the first one now,
(04:00):
I mean liberty. This is thefirst iteration of liberty that we ever see
on an American coin. If Idie, well, it looks like she's
on a roller coaster in the frontseat, like her hair just go wild.
And and then obviously we have theeagle on the back again. This
is kind of reminiscent of German coinageof the period with that eagle. But
(04:21):
just just a super cool coin thatwe never never made anything like again.
So and a single star, singlestar. Yep, all right at the
bottom. Now, Matt, asI was looking through this, I have
a coin for you. Oh yeah, yeah. So if you go to
(04:41):
the next story, bo, you'llhave your chance to own the sole finest
eighteen sixty three three dollars gold coin. You know, while I like that
coin a lot, I am fartoo poor to own that particular coin.
Oh I know that, I mean, who is it? But still it's
like, you know, you yougo gaga over the classic, the the
(05:03):
older stuff, you know, thetrue historic stuff. Right this histork,
this is war three dollars gold. We'll give you right point. Survived this
long is just an absolute miracle.I love the coin, don't get me
wrong, but never going to getdown it. I might get to drool
(05:24):
on it at some point in mylife when it's on display somewhere, but
that's about it. C AC hasannounced the crossover of the D. L.
Hansen collection. You know, it'sreally funny. We had Ron on
the other day and I actually talkedto him. He called me a couple
of days ago and we were talkingabout this, and he was telling me
(05:45):
that not all of the coins crossedfrom the other holders, even some of
the stuff that had cack stickers. Some of it obviously would cross it the
same grade, but some of itdidn't upgrade. But then he had one
coin that was in a sixty sevenhold where he said, you know what,
this coins an eight. They putit in an eight holder. So
I think he said seven or eightof the coins actually downgraded. Now everything
(06:08):
that he had a catsticker kept thesame grade, right, Ye, yes,
yeah, I believe so. Buthe said some of the coins actually
downgraded from the PCs holders. Soright, So the claim from CC grading
is that they're not changing the gradingstandards, they're just enforcing them. Right,
just actually great. I think it'sinteresting to note that many submitters have
(06:30):
been less than enamored with the recentCAC submissions. You know, Hanson said
he was okay with a couple ofdowngrades that happened when his collection crossed.
Well, it's just the holders, and I mean they are being super strict
and it is uh, I meanthis is these are the guys that some
(06:51):
of the best graders in the world, and that's how they grade. So
I hate to tell you, butthat's what the grade is these days.
So yeah, that's true. Theother companies are reacting instead of being proactive.
They're reacting by changing their standards allof a sudden, and it's a
real weird time in the grading worldright now. So yeah, I mean,
(07:13):
as somebody in the business, Ihave to be careful how I react
to it because there's politics involved inall of it. Sure, But that
said, it's like, I'm stillreally not sure how I feel about it.
I think that that I like strictgrading standards I always have. Yeah,
and I think that that that's alwaysgoing to be a good thing.
(07:34):
What I guess my overwhelming reaction hasbeen just all the whining about it.
Well, yeah, and I thinkthe whining more comes from those companies actually
reacting and changing their standards all ofa sudden than the new company coming along
in grading tighter. Because KAK hasn'tchanged how they're grading at all, They're
(07:58):
actually causing the other company to changehow they're grading. And I think the
gig is up on market grading andgrade inflation, and we are seeing that
come to roost here with the CACand we had to come to an end
at some point. Well, sure, but you know, you have you
have. I mean, obviously there'speople out there that aren't in this every
(08:20):
day like we are. But thenthere are collectors. But if you think
about it, you say, Ihave my entire collection graded by PCGS.
I like this new cat company.I'm gonna send my coins to them,
and then all of a sudden, two thirds of your coins don't cross.
What what's going on? Why arethey there's something wrong with my coins?
It's PCGS not grading, right,I mean, this is all like what's
(08:41):
going on right now? So instead, you know, the companies PCGS and
and GC are reacting instead of beingproactive. And now they've kind of tightened
up their standards. But the funnything is is that they were they were
getting roughly the same standard when theywere submitting the other slabs. Not everything
was getting beamed, not everything withyou know, So I don't understand why
(09:05):
suddenly that's a surprise to everybody.Well it's not. And that's that's the
thing that's I mean, to thepeople that have been dealing with sac stuff
a lot, it's not a surprisebecause this is what we've been experiencing the
whole time when it comes to gettingcoins graded with stickers. But now that
they're actually slabbing rack coins or takingsubmissions of rock coins. People are not
(09:28):
as confident or not getting the sameresults they did with coins and holders,
and that's just simply because maybe theyare not so good at grading, just
saying fair enough. The UK hasstarted releasing their twenty twenty four coins Winston
Churchill Okay, anniversary of Winston Man. Winston. You know, we always
think of Winston as being that kindof old guy during World War Two that
(09:52):
smoked cigars and drank whiskey. Butlook at him, he was a stud.
Okay. So here is something thatI was kind of unfamiliar with.
It is it is more or lesstradition that when the monarch changes, the
designs on the coins often do aswell. And when I think to Canadian
coinage, it did happen in youknow, it happened with the change from
(10:16):
Edward to George. The designs changed. They did not change from from Victoria
to Edward. They didn't change fromGeorge to Elizabeth. So it's like sometimes
they do sometimes they don't. Butone thing that you can be sure of
is that they didn't make these diesfar enough in advance for Elizabeth to be
(10:37):
on them anymore. Well, thesewill finally all have Charles on them.
And if you have seen the portraitthat's going to be on the Canadian coins,
not flattering now, I mean no, the look the British one,
the Buckingham Palace one that looks fine, dignified, you know. I mean,
there's it's a it's a giant earthe head on it. But that's
(11:01):
okay, it's true. It's theleast funny because it's true. But who
am I? Who am I tomake fun I'm not, you know.
And then they're going to issue uh, they're going to issue the coins of
the UK with the nature on it. Yeah, no, there, but
they were showing that that they hadthey had redesigned the one pens through fifty
(11:24):
p coins and and it was they'reon this holver here. But that's as
close as I can get you, okay. So here is something that is
way too cool to not try andbuy one. And that's the next story.
Yeah, let's hear what are whatare these talks about the trial of
the picks for the longest time. And it amazes me that in a day
(11:46):
when the overwhelming majority of coins aremade from base metal, that they still
do the trial of the picks. But they do and so all of the
bullion coins that are issued by HisMajesty's Government have to be tested to make
sure that they are of proper fineness, and if they are not, then
(12:07):
somebody at the mint loses their hands, like really like they chop them off.
I love it. I really dolove the traditional Now nobody has lost
their hands in over five hundred years, so okay, but I mean like
that used to be a thing, like if if you didn't the coins weren't
of the right assay, they wouldliterally slop off their hands. But every
(12:28):
year these coins are available, they'reavailable for sale. You can see where
they were tried. They're certified ascoming from the Trial of the Picks,
and I just think something like that, would you just way too cool to
have one? Yeah, that's prettycool. Trial of the Picks test coins.
Hmm, that's pretty awesome. TheBoy Scouts have revised their requirements for
(12:52):
the coin collecting merit patch. Okay, now it's like, I'm all,
I'm all for that kind of stuff. I have counseled several Boy Scouts.
My brother was an Eagle Scout.I've never really made it all that farther,
but my dad was a Scout master, So I'm really familiar with the
Merit badge programs. I really encourageany boy scout go to your local coin
(13:18):
shop and ask them if they participateand if they'll help you with the collecting.
Merit Badge expertise is really important inlearning this stuff. But they go
through the new requirements in the midnews blog story, and I have to
tell you that that I really dolike the knowledge that they're they're making somebody
have, you know, it iskind of a well rounded knowledge of coin
(13:39):
collecting, yeah, without getting tooin depth, without getting too much,
you know, and it's good enoughto where if somebody is not that into
it, they can still, youknow, get get into it. They
can learn some stuff through the MeritBadge program and if they really are into
it, it's a great launching padfor them. Yeah. Oh totally.
Yeah. I mean that's that kindof stuff. Anything to get kids involved
(14:01):
in this is great. I can'tcan't be mad about it. So,
if you missed our mega hangout twoweeks ago, our friend Jack Young mentioned
that he had encountered a new dollarvariety that week, and here it is.
You know, it's funny. Ourour live hangout actually makes the story.
So there you go. Yes,that was kind of cool. Yeah,
(14:24):
so Jack talked about this during ourour live hangout. There are pictures
at the Mega Hangout. You gotto check this out. You got to
hear Jack talk about it himself andhis crusade continues, and I'm I'm I'm
all about supporting that. Yep,yep, for sure. We gotta get
(14:45):
Jack back on the show. Wegot to just every time he comes up
with a new one, we shouldjust just get him on and talk about
it. It's fun, it's tocelebrate the man's entire catalog. I stayed
fun, but it's kind of scaryat the same time. It's it's like
a like a haunted house. It'sfun but scary, you know. So,
Yeah, doom is bad ac countedHouse, which is Jack Young's research.
But what he does is he goesand finds these counterfeits, and then
(15:07):
he identifies certain aspects of these counterfeitsand then goes out and tries to find
more of them. And obviously here'sanother you know, the quality of these
two pieces obviously is substantially different. But you can see in his images here
he shows these matching marks, whichis what we use to determine the coin
is counterfeit because the odds of twocoins having those exact same marks that you
(15:30):
see here in red in the sameplaces astronomical. That that is how he
does it and what he looks for. And then you know the reverse he's
he's saying that he has not foundthe counterfeit reverse in any other coins,
but he shows you know what tolook for as far as finding another reverse
of this type from this diepair. So pretty cool. Yeah, and Jack
(15:54):
is doing the lord's work. Imean he really is, Yes, very
much. So he's in the He'sin the chat tonight, Jack. Good
to see you. First we hadvault box YEP, if I recall correctly,
there was another. And now RareCoin television has taking a swing at
this lucrative market. You really wantedto get me wriled up tonight, didn't
(16:15):
you. I knew I had todo it. Rare Collectible's television is selling
mystery boxes containing precious metal coins,And to be really honest with you,
I think that this is what's finallygoing to get it all shut down,
because now it's starting, you know, everybody's starting to jump onto this.
(16:36):
Hey, and like we said withthe original stuff, it's all a lottery.
There's no free lunch. They're makingmoney on it, and it's a
lottery. And the odds are theodds are, they're set. It's you
know, it's not rigged, butyou know what I mean, it's it's
rigged in their favor. They're goingto definitely make money on it. Well,
(16:57):
sure, yeah, I mean anyof the things will. I just
I was looking at some numbers theother day that somebody showed me on the
new Vault box release and double theamount of boxes you would have to open
to get a red cord in thisrelease versus the last release. So what
does that tell you? Well, from thirteen percent of boxes we'll have a
(17:17):
red cord now down to six boxesor six percent of boxes. So yeah,
it's just it's it's it's bad.It's bad, and the price keeps
going up. And yeah, thesethings just I don't like them. They're
gross, they're nasty, they're notin the spirit of collecting, they're in
the spirit of gambling. And well, I mean even if if if you
(17:38):
take the lottery argument with it rightwhere it's it's not gambling, you know,
it's there's there's there's a you know, somewhat guaranteed. No, it
really is, though, It's likethe only reason you're buying this is you're
taking a chance that what you payfor is gonna be worth more than you
paid for it. Yeah, andlet's look at these boxes. Let's see
if they give us any information aboutwhat's even in these boxes. This rare
(18:02):
coin TV stuff, because it justlooks just as gross and disgusting as the
other stuff. Want to see examplesof types and coins included in our first
series of three coin mystery boxes AmericanGold and Silver Eagles, Gold Muffaloes,
and the New Morgan. So it'spretty much just stuff. Twenty four hundred
carefully selected American coins man five separatetiers of rarity and each pree coin mystery
(18:30):
box. So that means there's gonnabe three separate tiers of people that are
really really salty. Pretty much.I don't like it. It's gross.
I mean, four hundred perfectly gradedproof American silver Eagles woo. Yeah,
it's like and if you're if you'reclaiming that that's a level about that twenty
(18:57):
five dollars for three MS seventy twentyfourteen silver ehicles and see how you like
it. That's all I gotta say. Some randomly selected packs even contain high
value chase coins. I will bereally glad when this bat is over and
it's dead and people realize that it'sstupid and that people. I think the
(19:17):
government's going to set it, shutit down. I think the SEC is
going to get involved and say itdoesn't matter if because before then I think
that hopefully people will wise up andstop throwing their money away at this stuff.
And I don't know, I justhate this stuff. It's really bad.
Yeah, that's all. I thinkwe're gonna have to save people from
(19:38):
themselves. Again, speaking of theSEC, they're very near a decision on
allowing an ETF based on spot bitcoin. Oh god, I heard correctly.
I think the other day they actuallydid approve it. There was a fake
story that they approved it, andthen several days later there was a story
(20:00):
that they actually did approve an ETF. Also also gross. But I no,
no, well, I mean mything is is, how can you
have an ETF which is already oneof these kind of you know, practices,
and you're gonna do it with somethingthat's not tangible? Birds of a
feather flock together, my friend.I know, but that's like, you
(20:22):
know, oh man, that's that'sworse than like a genuine fac simile of
something. But yeah, I mean, it's just it's it did go through,
it did get approved. I'm goingto stay as far away from as
possible because you know, you see, we had gold ETFs. You know,
we had we and you saw whatthat did of the gold market.
It changed it fundamentally. So whoknows what it's going to do to this
(20:45):
stuff, which I mean who knows? Who knows? And if you go
to the next story, here's whereI see the issue and the biggest reason
that they should Yeah, that isbecause North Korea is responsible for over six
one hundred million in crypto theft lastyear. Yeah, exactly, that's exactly.
That's a very good point because thisstuff is not secure. It's used
(21:07):
by criminal organizations as their main moneya lot of the times, and it's
just dumpy. Yeah, you wantto help people fun terrorism and dark operations
and all kinds of things that reallyshouldn't see the light of day, then
hey, this might be for you. But otherwise I don't know, it's
(21:30):
just something kind of steerco I hatecovering this stuff on the show because I
had to stay as far away fromthat stuff as possible. What makes you
feel icky too? And finally,in the news, we get our news
stories every episode from RSS feeds placedonline by industry publishers. Yep. I
found a new one recently, anew RSS feed and if you get the
chance, check out this website. The articles are really great and you don't
(21:55):
have to join or become a memberor anything. You could just read it
anonymously. Well it's from the greatso there you go. Yeah on Gray
Sheet. So anyways, Jeff Garrettwrote a really cool article on branch mit
proof coins and it's more than justyour typical gloss over of what they are,
you know, and the fact thatJardley never see them anymore. Right,
(22:15):
Instead, Jeff kind of goes throughand gives examples of dates and a
little background on the coins. Sokudos to Jeff, and kudos to Gray
Sheet and a CDN publishing for thisand a lot of other really wonderful articles
that we can all enjoy. Butthis is this is kind of a new
RSS feed and I love this becausethis gives me specifics of stuff that you
(22:41):
really can't find any place else.Yeah, And I mean and obviously Jeff
being who he is, you know, being one of the premier dealers in
the country, the new editor ofthe Red Book. I mean, this
is this is the guy that knowshe knows these things. Yeah, Jeff,
Jeff knows a couple of things. And that was the news. And
(23:03):
the news was brought to us byICE. Some have it, don't want
it, some want it and don'thave it. Ice has Has the winter
weather effect affected your shop at allthis week? Uh? It was yeah.
I mean today at the office wewere a little slow, but it
was actually nice. We actually gotsome stuff done. I was able to
get a lot of stuff that Ihave been working on actually taken care of,
(23:27):
which was good. You know.I had a little little extra time
to work through some projects and pilesthat I've been meeting to get to.
So it was nice. Actually, normally I'm so busy on Saturday that I
don't know my middle name. Soit was it was decent, but you
know, obviously not optimal. Ilike busy. Busy is always good.
(23:47):
Well, I'll tell you we wereclosed early one day this week, but
we almost got completely snowed out onFriday, you guys had a blizzard.
We just had some ice and rainand free using temperatures and sixty mile an
hour winds. So well, here'sthe thing. And and yes, I
mean so we're Chicago and we getall that stuff right, right, it's
(24:08):
pretty much an every year thing. You shouldn't be surprised when it snows in
January and Chicago. But this waslike one of the bigger storms of the
year and so really was big andall hit at once. We actually got
lucky in the fact that the stormwent to the north a little bit further
than it should have, and sowe ended up getting just a ton of
(24:29):
snow in certain places like where Ilive, and then it started raining,
so it ended up being okay, yeah, that's not always great because you
know, you get the snow andthen covered rain and then freezing over.
It's not necessarily great, but couldbe worse, could be worse. Well,
yeah, you know we uh myguys know me in my office,
(24:52):
I if there is a plus infront of the temperature, I am wearing
shorts and sandals because that's that's howI And you don't like any of the
people that I bowl with, rightI walked into the office stepping through snowpiles
today in shorts and flip flops. So it just is what it is.
But you know, my guys knowalso that it takes a lot to keep
(25:15):
me out of my office because Ilike to I always. I'm just a
workaholic. I love being in myoffice. It's like my getaway. So
you do like to work. Ido. I enjoy's coming from somebody else
who really likes to work. Well, having three boys at home, nine,
eleven, and thirteen, I needa break every once in a while,
(25:36):
So it might not be a wantto work as much as you want
to get away. I want to. Yeah, maybe hear myself think for
a second, you know stuff likethat. Well, do you want to
jump to the thing that has quicklybecome my newest favorite segment of this entire
show ever in the history of mandinosaurs. Yeah, yeah, I actually
(25:59):
do, because it's like my favoritething as well. Okay, good,
well, let's jump to it.Guys. You guys are awesome. This
is your coolest thing segment. Wealways love seeing what you guys bring to
us. You know, the coolestthing was something I think what episode did
we start the coolest thing. Itslike episode two three maybe of our show.
(26:25):
It's been more than ten years ago. Okay, so you're talking about
when the coolest thing started in episodetwenty six, twenty six okay, so
episode twenty six still probably more thanten years ago. We started the coolest
thing that walked into matt shop, and it started as just mine, and
then once Mike got working at ashop, it became ours, and now
with this latest iteration, it becameeverybody. So you guys are awesome.
(26:49):
We love seeing what you guys bring, so let's let's check them out,
all right. Lee Tyler says, picked up this nineteen eight ten dollars Indian
a few weeks ago from my localcoin. Really excited to have this in
my collection. And he goes onto show us a nineteen oh eight ten
dollars Indian and MS sixty one probablyone of my favorite coin US coin designs
(27:11):
is a ten Indian, So thereyou go. And next up, Dennis
Mendoza shows us an eighteen forty eightoh half dollar in PCGSMS sixty with a
cat sticker. So that's a toughgrade. You don't see too many MS
sixties these days. Coins are easeither usually AU fifty eight or like MS
(27:34):
sixty one or two. So tosee that sixty grade, it's kind of
interesting. It's a really nice coin, it does. And it's a tough
D eight New Orleans mint just allaround war mid state. I like it.
I like it, Jack Riley anothergreat roll hunt fined from a few
(27:55):
months ago. Hard to get agood picture of it, and the damage
doesn't help the matter, nonetheless, foul. The nineteen thirty nine d d
RFS eight oh one doubled Monticello.Yep, and if you look at it,
this is coin's actually really easy tosee this last oh in Monticello.
It's the best place to catch it. But actually doubled all the way around
five cents into the United States ofAmerica. Motto. But I always that
(28:18):
pickup point for me is always thatlast oh is where I look. I
think it's the easiest place to seeit. It surely is. Dave Helmer
says, coin picture. Oh,this is an English hammered piece, got
it? I found it? Yep, this is an English hammered piece.
It looks like it is. Iforget which king that is I've been doing
(28:42):
this week. Henry Henry the firstmaybe looks like Henry, but it's a
six pence. It's a six pence. You can tell that because on the
front here in Roman numerals you seethe word sick or you see the number
six. That's how they denominated those. You can always tell me that's what
it is. Yeap. And nextup, Don Morre said, spent the
(29:07):
day at fun got some cool things, But the coolest thing I got was
a selfie with this guy. Oh, the Beard Bros. Yeah, the
Beard Brothers there, you go asSmith brothers. Before and after we got
Don and Russ there, Oh,Russ and then Don post. Likewise,
he had a cool pick up thisseventy five off center ghosted memorial. First
(29:27):
I've seen with the ghosting, notfinding any info on this, but weird,
that is very very strange. Idon't quite know what would cause that.
Yeah, that to me, I'mreally really puzzled as to how that
happened. I mean, it couldhave slid into the collar and then another
(29:49):
struck coin on top of it.But you would expect to see more of
the design transferred over from like abrockage. Yeah, and you'd see something
on the other side that would giveyou a clue one of the sides is
going to be strong. Yeah,I don't quite understand. That coin very
very interesting. I mean, definitelylooks like it's made. Obviously the off
cinder strike is made, of course, but yeah, that definitely looks like
(30:12):
a ghosting of the building. SoI don't know if maybe a coin set
on it clearly is the memorial.I mean, I think that's not that's
I mean, I'm really seeing that. I don't know if maybe like another
coin set on top of it fora long time, like in a bag,
or I just don't know. Idon't know. Ed Anderson has a
(30:33):
Byzantine coin, The Revolt of Herrycleef fallis from Alex Sandretta had a few
months now, but he really likesit. This actually is a really beautiful
coin. One of the things thatso as I'm learning about ancient coins,
I'm finding that I'm becoming more interestedin the history around them. Hey,
(30:56):
look this coin, this coin islike you and me. It's it's it's
an early coin show podcast. It'sgot two guys sitting next to each other.
Yeah, yeah, I like that. So there's a little bit of
a degree on this coin, alittle bit of uh of copper rot,
you know the green. Yeah, and uh, that's perfectly normal and natural
(31:17):
for these coins. And I mean, I just I like the coin.
I like how well preserved it is, how well centered. It is.
Just a really nice Byzantine coin.Yeah, I think it's pretty. I
like the color. I like thecolor. Uh. Steve Hansen says,
I kind of like this double strikescent. I think it's cool. I
(31:38):
do too. And that's all youneed. Yeah, that's all you need.
Uh. I think it's cool. That's all it takes. I like
the fact that it's got two dateson it. Yeah, yeah, it's
pretty cool. It's it's fairly round, which means at least one of those
strikes was in the collar. Yeah, it looks like the first the first
strike was definitely in the collar.I mean it centered. Yeah, it's
(32:02):
weird. Another odd coin. JodyNatson, I finally got an Isabella.
You know this coin. It's kindof grown on me over the last few
years. I don't really know why, because it's it's just I don't know,
I don't understand it myself. Actually, maybe it's because I'm getting bored
with just your standard US coins. But I kind of started to like Isabella
(32:24):
Quarters. I used to hate them, and now I've kind of started to
kind of like him, and Ifeel I feel weird about it. I
don't know how to feel. Yeah, it's I like the design. I
just don't like the fact that everybodyhates on him so much. Yeah,
yeah, yeah, I don't know. It's weird. Uh Isaiah hag him
(32:47):
in the slab datt he says thiswas a cute upgrade. Cute. He's
calling coins cute like he's yeah,he's getting too big for his breeches that
one. Uh. I says thiswas a cute upgrade to make it the
fun show. Wasn't a sixty fivenow sixty six? Yeah? I mean
that's a cool coin. It's nice, looks nice. I'd like to see
(33:07):
cool, very cool. George Kobuk, let's see this in eighteen ninety nine.
V Nickel. Yeah, and thisis the great part about this.
You know, it's like this toGeorge is cool. To me, it's
cool. It's like, I justI like the fact that people like different
things and it takes all types, just like in the world. You know,
(33:27):
everybody do this. That's right, that is exactly right. Arthur Valentine
says, coolest thing close by isthe first elongated sense in the back of
an eighteen ninety one V Nickel.Oh, yeah, these these are cool,
These Columbian Expo pieces, the elongatedI think they're really cool too.
I've had a bunch of these overthe years. I always like seeing them
(33:50):
on things other than sense, youknow, like it was to me like
the Colombians were done with more Nicholsthan anything else. Yeah, yeah,
Nichols and sense. I mean yousee a lot of sense, but you're
like, I've seen them on dimes. I had one on a seated dime
not too long ago, which wascool. So yeah, you know,
seeing them on things other than Nicholsand senses pretty cool to me. I
(34:13):
saw one on a Canadian piece onetime. I forgot to tell you that.
Let's play Harlan seven times Top Popnineteen sixty six Australian Proof one Sense
in pro sixty nine. Red Deepcameo, Oh, that's pretty cool.
Did you mean to make it looklike a Christmas tree because it's just that
season or what? I don't know. That's cool, very cool, tis
(34:35):
the season, that's right? EricMathard says, how about that time when
I've been on a Morgan I couldn'tafford because I was one hundred percent positive
that I would be out bid.My wife is right, I don't always
think these things through all the waysounds familiar. It's an eighteen eighty s
Morgan in sixty six plus with agreen bean cacsticker. Super nice coin.
Well, let's take a look atthis super nice coin. I agree with
(34:58):
you. I think it's a supernice coin. It is a super nice
coin. Let's see if there's anotherpicture of the back. Nope, unfortunately,
No, that's okay. Tony's Maxsays is my motorcycle account. Yeah,
I mean if that's if that's true, that's my friend. There you
go. Corey Fuzzy, I snaggeda super cool ss New York Shipwreck blust
(35:24):
half from Matt. Looks great ondisplay, he did. Corey fuzz the
Fuzz as we know him, camedown and hung out with us a couple
of weeks ago and we had agood old time. We went to a
football game where his Pittsburgh Steelers gotabsolutely destroyed, and uh yeah, he
came. He hung out the officeand bought this coin and we had just
(35:46):
a blast. So it was fun. Kenneth Fogler says eighteen ninety one pata
not currently rare valuable. But Ilike Spanish coins with various depictions of King
Alfonso on them, and that isa cool piece. Looks like a nice
Spanish silver coin. Let's see ifwe got another side here, we do
the other side. Yeah, youget little, oh, little baby offs
(36:12):
man. I sure hope he wasa child in this picture, because if
he was like thirty and that's whathe looked like on coins, that would
be an issue. That's that's likemore boy king than King Tutt, Right.
Like, if I finds I wasthirty two in that picture and that
was what they had me looking likeon some coins, I would be angry.
But Joe Bohannon picked us up recently. This is the highest graded EPQ
(36:39):
for that freed Bird number, andthe second highest graded overall, with one
in sixty four. While New Yorknotes are plentiful, this signature combination is
rare because the Treasury Secretary was onlyaround for one year, basically got it
for the type price. A minorfold in the middle is the only blemish
I can see. To be fiftyfive, it has to be so close
(37:00):
to to Crispun circulated. So yeah, that's that's kind of part for the
course. This is a beautiful noteshow the other side. Yeah, well,
I just want to say real quickthat I really like this vignette of
Jefferson or not Jefferson Franklin. I'mjust kidd says that's awfully interesting Jefferson,
the full on side view of frankwhen I think it is the only time
(37:22):
we ever see that, So Ithink that's pretty. It doesn't look angry
like he doesn't know your dollar bill. And in the back of these always
reminded me of a coloring book.You know. That's that's a really good
Uh, that's a good Yeah,it always reminded me of a coloring book
when I saw him. So,but I turned it over and somebody had
(37:45):
colored it in. That would suck. Bob Brock says, picked up one
of the lower mintage Morgans recently, hoping, hoping for more of the ninety
threes, and he shows us aneighteen ninety three more dollar Philadelphia mint and
an end to see XF forty fiveholder looks like a nice wholesome coin.
(38:07):
Ninety threes are tough. H huh. All ninety threes are tough, no
matter what JR preston. I haven'tgot much lately, but my latest purchase
I love the twenty three reverse proofpiece and Morgan in Proof seventy, got
all six and Proof seventy and allsix uh in OGP for twenty twenty three.
I still think they look weird, but that's okay. Well, they
(38:30):
do look weird, but the questionis is due you like it. Let's
say it's an acquired taste. Itis like if I wanted Morgan to look
like she was made out of crumpledup tenfoil, I would have made her
out of crumpled up tenfoil. Imean, I think that the Morgan is
(38:51):
probably the coin that this works theleast for right. I don't mind.
They've made pretty much every coin they'veever made in reverse proof now yeah,
all the stuff that currently circulates safedone, and the Peace Dollar does look
okay. Don't like the reverse asmuch as I like the obverse. Same
with the Morgan. I like thereverse better than I like the obverse,
(39:14):
but the obverse is like, itlooks horrible in my opinion, It's just
maybe it's because I don't like Morgan'sall that much. I don't know.
That's not to knock on, youknow Jr's coins. I have this set,
right, I bought it, soI mean I like it enough to
have bought it. Yeah, yeah, I mean it's just like we said
earlier. It takes all times. You know this, This could be your
(39:36):
favorite coin in the world, andI might hate it, and you know
what, that's okay, that matter. That's why we're here. Excuse me.
Matt Porter says, A good friendof mine gave me this bronze nine
to eleven metal. My family losta friend in the North Tower that day.
A pick of the reverse will alsobe posted. That's cool, piece.
Look at that nice bronze coin.Very cool, Yeah, very nice.
(40:04):
Ambrotype Visuals nineteen twenty one Rainbow tonedPeace Dollar VM three. So it's
got a line through the l myfirst buy where the toning influenced my selection.
Yeah, yeah, it does havesome toning on it. Is there
a picture of the other side?Let me see, Yes, there is?
Yeah, there we go, ohso much toning on the front.
But that's okay. That's how thesethings shake down sometimes. Uh. Paula
(40:30):
is up. Paula says, Okay, I'll play maybe not the coolest,
but definitely cool, and she showsus in eighteen sixty one Civil War era
dog tag. Now, these werekind of, I don't want to say,
novelty pieces, but they were definitelynot standard issue things. They were
(40:50):
sold by merchants that followed the troopsaround, because dog tags in that period
really weren't a thing. But youcould buy them and have them engraved with
your information so in case thing happenedto you, they can get your remains
back to where they were supposed togo. And that is what this is.
These were sold by guys called suttlersthat used to follow the soldiers around
and sell them goods that they couldn'tcouldn't ordinarily get from the the army itself.
(41:15):
I like how the tag on itsays War of eighteen sixty one.
Yeah, so it's early you know, that was that was still what's going
on, So it wasn't the Warof Northern Aggression yet, right. So
Delburd Channels won a won an auctiona lot of mercury dives at bulk silver
prices and found this forty two overone d Heck, yeah, that is
(41:37):
what I'm talking about. My friendI love picking those. I picked eighteen
of those out of ninety percent overthe years. This one's harder to find
too, because the d is it'sharder to see. Look at the bottom
of that four you're looking for,Yeah, that's it. That's what you
look at. Yeah, look atthe bottom of it. Look at at
the two. Nope, nope, there's just a little nub on the bottom
of the tube. But you lookat the bottom of that four, and
(41:57):
that little stairstep in the in theleg of the four, and also there's
a little doubling underneath the side crossof the four. But yeah, that's
what you look for, and youcan find them. They are out there
because those quays they didn't really discoverfor quite a while after they came out.
The forty two over one. Philadelphia'swas pretty much like right away because
it was just so big, pobbulize. But these quins, I don't think
(42:20):
it came out for something like fifteenor twenty years, maybe even longer.
They're oh, wait, you know, there's another one here. So a
lot of these ended up, youknow, circulating and change. And if
you can find an old group ofninety percent that's been you know, in
a family. Forevery odds are youcan find one if you're lucky. Like
I said, I found eighteen ofthem looking looking for nineteen. It's amazing.
(42:44):
Clinton Ogle says the prize of mycollection took me three years to track
one down. One of the goldpieces made by the Philadelphia Mint for use
in payment to Saudi Arabia. Yeah, so these are really cool, Philadelphia
Mint essays slabs basically, aren't they? No, I forget, let me,
(43:04):
let me get my phone. Iforget the exact story. That's why
we made these. I think wewere paying the Saudi's for something, but
I forget what it was. Andthey demanded payment in gold okay, issued
as bullioned by the Philadelphia Mint inorder to pay Saudi Arabian government for oil
rights, that's what it was.And struck the second content as British as
(43:25):
four British gold sovereigns, So wewere paying them for the oil rights.
They demanded payment in gold, sowe struck these so has four pounds yep
so to be the weight of fourBritish sovereigns, which was the standard gold
trade of the time, and that'swhat we used to pay them. So
(43:45):
there you go. Yeah, inthe US wasn't issuing gold coins at the
time. So yep, Richie Stitch, come my fifty five double die Operas
lincolncent PCGSMS sixty four. Brown,I love these things flags on Ritchie's part.
I mean it's a nice one.Hey, you know what, it's
(44:07):
okay, I love these things. They're well, that's true. They they're
pretty awesome. Isaiah says, Hey, y'all, I'm new to this group
and this is the first time I'veshared to the podcast. Well, thank
you so much for doing that.Let's check out your coin. You show
us a seventeen twenty one Spanish onereal silver coin, So this was actually
(44:28):
made in Spain. It's not acolonial issue, and it is graded in
gc MS sixty five, which fora coin from seventeen twenty one is an
amazing state of preservation. So verycool. Ritchie's double dipping. Ritchie is
double dipping. But that's okay. Here's one of the most amazing, prettiest
(44:51):
toners I own. I bought itand others from a well respected collector.
And he shows us a nineteen eightfour s Olympics proof dollar that looks like
it got in a fight with abox of high lighter markers, because there
are all sorts of really pretty neoncolors all over this coin. I thought
(45:13):
the coin was gold to begin with. Noah, it's just that I look
design only. Wait that's a silverdollars. Yeah, very cool, very
very cool. Basket has posted apage from his collection that has twenty Morgan
dollars. Yeah, there's a startat the bottom, but yeah, in
(45:35):
a couple very cool though, verynice. Or from his book of all
silver Heck, yeah, triple dip, triple dip. Oh a triple triple
deep triple dipper. That's all right, love it, go for it,
all right. So Richie, howabout this gold solidus that appears to have
a drop of blood falling from thespear. So I purchased this from harl
(46:00):
And Jay Burke and Aaron Burke. You get from those guys, yeah,
yeah, you get the whole experiencebuying from that place, the full experience,
you do, you do. Andthis is so one thing that I
kind of have to explain is thatwhen you talk about ancient gold coins,
they tend to be really really nicebecause they were treasury coins and so these
(46:22):
didn't end up in the ground atleast most of them didn't end up in
the ground like so many of themdid. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
Very cool. Sean Davis, nineteenthirty ten kroner from Iceland. I
have one of these on my desk. I just saw it the other day.
I like the sleigh. Yeah yeah, they're weird. Little things are
(46:44):
commemoratives. But there are ten kroners. See if you posted the other side.
I like the other side better. It's got the shield of arms of
Iceland on it, the coat ofarms. It's pretty cool. Pretty cool.
Brent Pearson says, the coolest thingI've got lately a bunch of no
date Buffalo Nichols. I am carvingsome different designs. Brent is a hobo
nickel carber. If he didn't know, it's going to be doing hoboickel carving.
(47:06):
Giveaway. This is a video ofsome of the ones I've done.
There you go, looks cool.I like Brand's work. He does some
good stuff, very very iconic designs, stuff that is very reminiscent of artists
past. The people are showing theacient coins some love today. That's okay.
(47:30):
They need a little every while.Malcolm mcgous says this is one Durham
coin of the Artiquis of Martin isnotable because the obverse copies the image of
a generalized Roman emperor, and asstated on the reverse, it was minted
in age six forty, which isaround twelve forty two. The Martins were
(47:53):
based in southeastern Turkey. Is fourteengrams and twenty nine millimeters in size.
Yeah, I'm sorry, Well,I was just gonna say it's a generic
Roman emperor. Is what do yousay? Yeah, it's weird because you
look at the obverse of the coinand like, oh that's a Roman coin.
You flip it over and it's it'sErbic riding. It's like, oh,
(48:15):
definitely not a not a not aRoman coin. Definitely. Well,
I mean, I want to callit Turkish, but it's it's Byzantine.
Yeah, yeah, late Byzantine.Very very cool. Very Swan snuck in
at the end and says, finallyone from the staff been looking for one
(48:37):
of these for years. Finally gota couple off heritage a few weeks ago.
These are journey in the Jersey andthe other the Channel Islands, both
just off the coast of France. They were the only area of the British
Isles that was occupied by Germany andthese were printed by the Germans to be
used during the occupation. Yeah,it's really interesting. Very in the shop
(49:00):
this week and we were talking,so this is the only part of Great
Britain that was occupied at all duringWorld War Two and it's just tidy island.
Nobody lives there, you know, there's just a guard on there.
Basically it was a soldier. Yeah, and that was it. I mean,
they're actually kind of cool in theirown weird, little crude way.
(49:22):
Like this jersey piece is neat becauseit just like the way it says six
pens, that's like it was paintedpretty neat. I can't say I've ever
seen those before, Barry, Sothank you so much for sharing that with
us. And you know what, thank all you guys for sharing awesome.
Yeah, you guys. You know, it's like we ask you to help

shows until Central States in May.So we got ways Tee. The silver
(50:06):
Stacker just did a new video thismorning with Aaron and he said that there
is one coming with me that hasa Benny Hill theme in it somewhere.
So I'm kind of frightened of thatprospect. But I knew that that would
make you smile. Man. Itdoes. It does every time every time
I hear that Benny Hill music, and I just thank an you, buddy.
(50:28):
