(00:01):
This is the Coin Show Podcast,a podcast about coins and coin collecting from
the perspective of both dealers and collectors, hosted by two guys with a passion
for collecting and a combined experience ofover fifty years in the coin industry.
Here's Matt Dinger and Mike Notleman onthe Coin Show Podcast. And this is

(00:28):
episode Let's see one, two thirtytwo to thirty two. My friend,
Hello the Coin Show Podcast. I'mMike and I'm mad And on tonight's episode
of the Coin Show Podcast, weare going to talk about some cool stuff

(00:48):
going on in the world of numismatics, and of course we are going to
talk about the coolest thing in numismatics, which is the coolest thing that walked
into our shops this week. We'vegot some news for our next hang out
and probably some other discussion. Butfirst, as always, the news in

(01:19):
here we are my favorite, favorite, favorite favorite part of the show,
Like who is the news brought toyou by? So the news is brought
to you by mistakes. We hada really great tagline, but somebody deleted
it from the company computer talk abouta big mistake. I like that.
That's good. That's good. SoQuinn Week has published their Doug Davis Alerts

(01:45):
from Numismatic Crime. They do andit's it's really helpful. They they wanted
to let you know that there weresome magnotes that were recovered after the package
was stolen and lost in the mail. But they also have, you know,
other serial numbers and things like thatof coins that were stolen from a
dealer at Long Beach Expo. Hetells us about some missing gold World coins

(02:07):
that were recovered. So it's it'sa little mixed bag of you know,
a little bit of good, alittle bit of bad, but a lot
of help. You know. DougDavis is doing the lord's work. Yeah,
yeah, it's a shame right now. Too. We had a we
had a package with two gold coinsdisappear not too long ago as well.
So I had a five ounce silverthat just kind of vanished, just disappeared

(02:34):
in the mail, priority mail.Yeah, was two one ouce gold eagles
that got to out for delivery andthen never showed up. Seeing the funny
thing is it's ours never got toscanned. Oh they were never scanned,
which is bad because that means notracking. So what's what's really funny is
it was it was an eBay transaction, and uh in that in that process,

(02:58):
you know, you only have acertain amount of time. And the
guy that bought it from us wasactually really cool, really patient throughout the
whole thing. And so what hedecided to do was he let me,
He let me kind of plug, let it play out, and eventually,
when he didn't get the coin,I returned him his money, no problem,
no questions asked, right yep.About a week and a half later,

(03:20):
the coin showed up, and theguy was good enough to call me
and tell me that that's good.Yeah, the five ounce silver coin.
That was really nice him. Yeah. Yeah, and the guy and you
know, funny enough, the guythat I was dealing with in that situation
was really cool as well too.He tried to let it play out,
but the thing never showed up.And the worst part was I called the

(03:42):
post office out there, I senta tracer on the package, and I
could not get anybody to help meat all at the post office. So
not so good, friends, notso good. I mean, the worst
part about my particular experience was thefact that it had never been scanned.
I gave it to our letter carrier. Now it's like Look, I work
in the city and it's a bigcity, and so a lot of things

(04:06):
happen with our post office, andyou just kind of got it, you
know, I trust my letter carrierimplicitly, and yeah, so it was
one of those things where it justI know that she did what she was
supposed to do with it. Iknew it would show up, and eventually
it did. And even if itnever did, I still wouldn't have believed

(04:26):
anything I had to do with her. Yeah. Yeah, it's a shame
right now. But that's it's moreand more that's happening lately. I've noticed
the United States Mint has issued thetwenty twenty four W Platinum Proof Eagle.
So you know, that's kind ofwhat I was saying, is is so

(04:47):
this is the platinum proof Eagle.Aren't they still doing the Constitution series Liberty
Spreads? Okay, it's a newseries probably, Yeah, but yeah,
so look, have you seen alot of the Bullion platinum Eagles. I
don't think anybody's buying them. No, No, I can't tell you the
last time I bought a modern Bullionplatinum Eagle. It's been a long time.

(05:12):
Yeah, I mean the premiums onthem are ridiculous, but just not
around anyway. And looking at thestory here, it looks like achieved opening
sales of twenty seven and eighty threepieces. Yeah, that's how many people
are collecting this series, pretty much, because this is the third one in
the series, pretty much. Yeah, I don't think there are four excuse

(05:34):
me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yep, yep. It's doesn't seem
like it's going to be a veryit is a very popular series, but
who knows. So the Proof SilverEagles are out, the Proof Platinum Eagles
are out, right, I don'tknow. It just it seems to me
like like I don't understand why thego by the Gold Buffalo's. I haven't

(05:57):
seen those yet. Do you havethem? No? No, I haven't
seen me it made them yet?Have they? As far as I can
tell, I don't see them onthe list. That's kind of what I'm
talking about. Yeah, it's likethat's a coin that's in heavy demand.
Yeah, but they fired off theProof Eagles early, so maybe that was
the thing that got cut. Youknow, there's always something that has to

(06:18):
give. Well, here's here's mythought, and this is this is me
being really really cynical. Okay, and that is that the Mint decided to
release the proof platinum now while theprice is low, hoping that it goes
up or it might go down. You know. It's like, I don't

(06:38):
think platinum is going to stay whereit's at. And it's like they're jacket
people for like like a four hundpremium over spot. Yeah. Well,
I mean, but that's you wantit, you gotta pay for it right
now, that stuff, because theyit doesn't it doesn't behoove them to mint
two three coins at all. Sono, not for all the setup that

(07:02):
it takes, the fact that theycan't do gold eagles and platum at the
same time. It's just all thatstuff. Yeap, yes, sir.
So with that said, the USMint is reporting the bullion coin revenue fell
twelve point eight percent fiscal year twentytwenty three. But how exactly this is
the saying it's like they recorded salesa twenty four percent, twenty four and

(07:27):
a half percent increase, and they'resaying that it was a surge in silver
American eagles. So they made thirtypercent more silver eagles than they did last
year, right, and apparently theymade fewer gold eagles. I'm just trying
to wrap my head around how yousell more of Well, I mean,
the only way that that would makeless money. The only way that this

(07:49):
happens is that the actual sourcing ofthe materials costs more. That's it.
Well, no, we're not talkingprofit, we're talking revenue. Oh revenue,
Yeah, yeah, okay, sothat's just raw sales. Weird.
Yeah, it's like the number wentdown even though they made more products and
the prices went up, they didnot go to a well I don't know

(08:11):
where it started last year. Iknow that at some point last year it
got all the way down to likesixteen eighty somewhere in there. I am
utterly confused by this story. Well, it's pretty much why I pulled it
out is because it just didn't makesense to me that revenue would fall thirteen
percent in a year where they justyou know, so they're saying that they

(08:33):
made they made basically twenty percent fewergold eagles and twenty percent fewer buffaloes.
Well, obviously that then that's gotto be where it's from. It made
thirty percent more silver eagles, eightythree percent less platinum eagles. Huh,
yeah, weird. So I meanobviously that that shortfall in revenue has to

(08:54):
come from the fact that they changedup. They made thirty percent more silver
eagles and cut the other stuff. So weird. Yeah, I guess you've
got to make a lot of silvereagles to get to two thousand. I
don't expect them to do that again, probably not. That's a reading the
story here. It's a decline offour hundred and eighty one point five million
dollars. Wow, it makes adifference which ones they make. The palladium

(09:20):
ones, for sure don't play anywherenear as big a part as they used
to. Well, number one hasgot to be the silver eagles, but
then followed right behind by the goldeagles and then the gold buffaloes. I
would think that's what I would thinktoo, said, your gold eagles and
go Buffalo's have got to be yourbiggest demand products. Cut the junk that's
not selling. I mean, Iget it. You're mandated to make it,

(09:41):
but make a thousand, not mandatedto make a lot of it.
Yeah, make a thousand call today, you know, like be like the
RCM, be like America's at weird, very weird. A rare bank note
from the First National Bank of Eureki, California is my great collections. So

(10:03):
yeah, I you know, Ilove the fact that it's This one is
popular because it's Eureka, which isLatin for I have found it, Yeah
right, or no, it's Greek. I'm sorry, it's Greek for I've
found it, but it's you know, Eureka, California is a is a
pretty big town. And then thediscoveries, you know, anybody that has

(10:24):
an interest in claims and stuff likethat. Eureka. So this one is
serial number one, which I don'tunderstand why it has a D serial number
and then it has another serial numberone. So these were printed in four
note sheets. This would have beenABC D. This would have been the

(10:48):
bottom note, so this would havebeen the fourth note on the sheet.
There were four number ones I believe, but they had the different prefix,
so ABC and D on the sheet. This one's at the bottom the cheeta.
As you can see. Why theserial number and then another serial number
because it's not related to the charter, the charge is there the internal internal

(11:11):
system. I'm not quite sure. It's kind of weird. I mean,
it is just odd. Let's justsay. I know people that know the
answer, but I don't know theI certainly I certainly think I do,
and I know you do, butI certainly don't know what it is.
I don't know why they did itthat Differently, while we were talking about

(11:31):
currency, something I kind of wantedto bring up because I really didn't think
about this until I stumbled across thisstory. The king of small sized currency
notes is the nineteen thirty three tendollars silver certificate. Yes, it is
very much so, it's it's justsuper rare. They made two hundred and
sixteen thousand of them, and theydestroyed sixty thousand of those and issued one

(11:56):
hundred and fifty six thousand of them. So the super super rare note.
It's like, the only notes thatare dated nineteen thirty three are are these?
Aren't they? Because the gold certificatesare all nineteen twenty eight right I
issued. This was issued when theyrecalled gold YEP. These were meant to

(12:22):
be the original replacements, you know, for when they weren't going to redeem
gold certificates in anymore. I wonderhow many of these are floating around mixed
in with the other ten dollars silvercertificates that are that are in bulk piles.
I don't know, but I willtell you one thing that kind of
really surprised me is if you lookat the bottom of the article notable specimens

(12:46):
of the series thirty three ten dollarssilver certificate, it's like one two three
sixty sevens Yeah, one two threesixty six is five sixty fives. So,
I mean, there's a lot ofreally nice copies of this bill,
but I don't want to say that, but they're also insanely expensive. The

(13:11):
last sixty seven looks like it's soldin twenty twenty three for ninety nine thousand
dollars, so well, that's onehundred and twenty sixteen when a sixty seven
EPQ sold for one hundred and fivethousand. Oh wow. Yeah, to
see that market may have softened alittle bit of these crazy yep, those

(13:31):
are the granddaddy of small sized notes. One of my favorite events every year
is the Central State's Numismanic Show Yeah, and we start that is because it's
in my backyard and all these bigdealers come to me. So nothing nothing
too selfish going on there. ButCentral States, which I'm a member of,

(13:52):
is going to institute a new stateshowcase program this year. And they're
going to have a showcase for eachof the member states in the Central States
Numismetic Society. Okay, so Ilike that. I think that's cool.
You know, Central States is kindof one of the bigger regional organizations out
there. You know, I wouldsay, if not maybe the biggest regional

(14:18):
organization that puts on a show wouldbe Central States. You know, the
others are national size organizations. Butyeah, that's cool. I think that's
Yeah. There's thirteen states are includedin the Central States. I don't know
what you want to call it,charter or whatever. So that means for
the next thirteen years, they're gonnabe honoring you know, one state each

(14:41):
year, and it's gonna be kindof cool. Yeah. Are you gonna
are You're gonna attend the Illinois Centennialcelebration for Central States and you're gonna where
you're a You're gonna wear your Illinoisshirt, You're fighting Alina shirt with pride
or something. Well, I don'thave a fighting Aline I shirt. Okay,
Chicago Bulls, the White Sox.Well, I mean, yes,

(15:03):
I'm a huge socks man, butI wear my Illinois, my my UIIC
shirt. Oh Okay, there yougo that guy. That's fine. Yeah,
So we've been talking about them,we've been talking about their judgment,
right right. You remember a longtime ago when we started doing this podcast,
we kind of discovered that it coststwo cents to make a penny,

(15:24):
yeah, six sense to make anickel inflation. Yeah, so penny now
costs three point zero seven cents anda nickel costs eleven fifty four cents.
Maybe that's that, Maybe that's partof that revenue issue we were talking about
earlier. Well, the funny thingis is they still made two hundred and

(15:45):
forty nine million dollars last year insenior rige. Yeah, so even after
giving away I mean just thousands ofdollars in making you know, oh no,
this is a thousands, my friend, this is millions of dollars.
Think about it. Think about it. Let's se how many nickels they made.

(16:07):
And if I don't see the story, tells us well here, so
unit costs and seniors percent and nickelfrom twenty five to twenty twenty three is
don at the bottom. And ifyou look, they have lost one hundred
and seventy eight point six million dollarslast year. There you go, there
these two points. But but theymade two hundred and forty nine million,

(16:33):
so that means that they they evenif they broke even on these, they're
killing it on the quarters. Yeah, they're killing it on the quarters and
the and the dollars. Right, yeah, wow, that's crazy. It
is kind of crazy. But yeah, so and and this is after making
they made four point one three sixbillion less cents last year they made one

(16:56):
point four to one six billion lessonsNichols, they made less dimes, less
quarters. Half dollars were up rightweird. I wonder when when people are
going to start calling the Nickels outand start starting to melt them illegal otherwise,
Yeah for the copper, no Nichols, Nichols, Man Nichols are mostly

(17:19):
copper, My friend, nickel andseventy. You're right, I forget about
that. Yeah, you modern coinnerds always get me with that stuff.
Yeah. And speaking of modern coin, I wanted something to cheer me up
after thinking about how much money theUS it is lighting on fire. So

(17:41):
we have the UK and UH andand King the Ears withsaurus in both.
You know, there's a colorized version, there's an uncolorized version. But now
you can own a coin that hasa dinosaur on one side and a dinosaur
on the other. I was gonnasay that. I was let you get
to it first. I know,I heard a little bit. Yes,

(18:06):
that was good. That's a goodjoke. Coin Week has done this really
really great series lately. They've beenpublishing just tons and tons of articles as
what they call a collector's Guide, and they've done all sorts of different denominations.
You know. In this week theydid like ten or twelve, and
so I just found this series tobe really fascinating. It was it was

(18:29):
cool. I highlighted the article onthe seventeen ninety two half tam and all
the stuff that went on with that. You know. It's it's kind of
a connection that I feel our showhas, yeah, you know, having
the written house specimen on our onour show in our hand, Yeah,
and then arguing about whether it's pronouncedDisney or Team, you know, because

(18:52):
QDB calls it a Disney. Yeah, I speak French. I'm sorry,
that's you know. I hate totell you, Mike, but I'm gonna
go with whatever Dave Bauers calls it. You know what, I don't blame
you for that. I really don'tblame you for that, but he's entitled
to be wrong, just like everybodyelse. And finally in the news,

(19:17):
our friend Jack Young and parties.Yeah, so here's the thing is is,
you know, he he did athing on on a documented counterfeit seventeen
ninety nine dollars and twenty twenty one, and he said he's been looking for
another one since. And this isthe culmination. You know, you went
big game hunting this week, andhe certainly found what he was looking for.

(19:41):
He found two of them. Ohcool. Yeah about the dash in
the R, right, I believeso? Yes, So this is uh
yeah, you look at it.You can see the dash in the R.
It is on It's on both ofthese coins. He saw one on
eBay, I want to say, late at night. And then there's there's

(20:02):
also a marker on the edge.I'm in the edge lettering. Very cool.
Yeah, that's weird. Little thatweird. I always check these seventeen
ninety nine dollars just to make sureI don't get one of these because they're
scary. Good. Yeah, no, kid, just like you normally counterfeits
good because this one actually matches aknown die pair if I remember right,

(20:23):
it's a let me see if hesays, yeah, it's uh so it
matches a known die pair, whichif you're using your die pairs as attribution,
you'd look at that and be like, okay, that gen's real.
But but the edge has a knownproblem with it in the lettering. Yeah,
yeah, so there's here. Yougotta look at the third side two

(20:45):
and here's where somebody paid twenty twentyfive dollars for one out. Well he
actually got saved because he made youknow, ended up canceling the auction.
Oh good, This guy right here, Devil's late guy. That guy is
an honest, stand up fella, because not many ebase howers would do that.
We very cool, very cool.We gotta we gotta salute that when

(21:07):
it happens. Yes, yes, that guy, if you can give that
guy a little business to it,because that's uh there's not too many of
those guys out there that do thatstuff. So awesome. It's never the
wrong time to do the right thing, right. So that was the news,
and the news tonight was brought tous by mistakes. We had a
really great tagline, but somebody deletedit from the company computer. Talk about

(21:29):
a big mistake, while somebody probablygot fired for that. You're listening to
the Coin Show podcast with Matt Dingerand Mike Notleman. So one of the
things that we wanted to talk abouttonight was that there is a fairly large
number of shows out there, yeahdon't get enough attention, and we wanted

(21:55):
to give him a call out, give him a shout out, and kind
of talk about, you know, some of the ones that are going on.
Well, I've kind of I broughtthis up to micro earlier today,
and I've kind of wanted to dothis for a while. But you know,
there are some decent lists out therethat provide information about when coin shows
are upcoming. If you haven't usedit coins it is a really cool website.
So I figured I would just kindof go through some of the shows

(22:18):
that are coming up this coming weekend, and maybe there's one in your area
you don't know about. So theseshows are happening March. I'll tell you
the dates, but it's the weekendof March first to the third, or
second, second and third, whicheverwhichever one of those days is. Friday
is the first, So Friday, some of the shows are Friday and Saturday,

(24:17):

Orland Park anyways, Mike Orland Parkis just outside of Chicago. Okay,
a little further outside of Chicago isthe Rockford Area Coin Club show in Rockford,
ill North Love. I like Rockford, It's cool town. It is
also Sunday, March third. Wehave Decatur Coin Show and Marketplace in Decatur,

(24:38):
Indiana. You're everywhere, I know, isn't necessarily I think that's like
I'm one of the say it's likea green Field Springfield. Yeah, everybody
has a Springfield March third, twentytwenty fourth, the Hunt Valley Coin and
Currency Show in I don't know quitehow to say this one. How's it

(25:00):

Lynnwood, New Jersey, the DaytonKettering Coin Club Show in Dayton, Ohio,

(25:21):

but not least, it looks likethe O n R Coin Show in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania March third, twentytwenty four. So those are shows coming
out next weekend. Maybe this willhelp you guys get to a show that
you didn't know was going on.So there you go. There's some other
shows coming up too, you wantto talk about Mike, I was told

(25:45):
asked to attend I guess the Whitmanshow in Baltimore coming up in March,
So apparently I will be there.I will be hanging out, I will
be making videos. This will bea great come find mac. Yeah,
yeah, this is gonna be wallthough with Matt, that would be fun.

(26:07):
I am going to be there todo nothing but make content, So
we're gonna have a blast. I'mgonna have stuff to give away. I
think, uh, it's gonna befun. So if you guys are going
to Baltimore coming up here in March, come find me. Let's let's hang
out, let's do some do somefun stuff around the show. I know
that there's going to be a lotof interviews going down. So yeah,

(26:27):
there's gonna be a lot of stuffgoing on with the Coin Show podcast and
we will bring it to you asit's made. It's gonna be really content
heavy weekend. So if you guyswant to see what's going on the show,
it's gonna be fun. So yeah, I'll be there. And now
for the coolest thing to walk inthis week a competition segment between Matt and

(26:49):
Mike to see who's had the coolestthing walk into their shops. Who will
win this episode? Let's find outMatt Mike, who's got the coolest thing?
All right, friend, you're upfirst. Well, I mean,
okay, so I am going totell everybody that this was born of a

(27:15):
streak that has been going on fora while. Now where I've just absolutely
been getting my blood handed to meand coming up with some pretty awesome stuff.
So you have been coming up withsome pretty awesome stuff. But I
don't know how far I have togo to get a to get a witness
here, you know what I mean. We're accelerated night. I brought another

(27:38):
bang or two. So okay,so we're going to see. So this
is a coin that walked into ourshop and we have custody of for just
a short time. It's been purchasedand we have to deliver it during the
National Money Show in Colorado. Sowe have about a month to play around

(27:59):
with this and show it to people, and boy have we been doing it.
Let's take a look at it.Here. This is a nineteen sixteen
D sixteen D sixteen D Mercury dimein pcgs MS sixty six full bands.
Hubba hubba, and it's in agreen label holder. It's in an old

(28:21):
green label holder. This is thishas been slapped for a long time.
This has been off the market fora very long time, and this is
everything that you want in a sixteenD. I've taken a coin that was
made only let's see they made itfor two months because do you know when
they started making sixteen d's uh wasit right at the end of the year

(28:45):
Halloween. Yeah, Barber kept thedies away from the dead ver mint until
Halloween, and that was why theycouldn't strike him until then. And then
they struck two hundred and sixty fourthousand of them, and I would get
I would I would venture to saythat there are more fakes than that out

(29:06):
there. Oh yeah, for sure. This coin. The thing that strikes
me about it, and the thingthat I think strikes most people when they
look at it is so that's whatthe mint mark looks like when it's king.
I was just thinking that. Letme zoom in here on it.
Actually, I mean the sixteen Dhas a very distinct mid mark shape.
It does because you're same t asyou'll find on the fourteen D sent same

(29:32):
D you will find on the sixteenD dime, you will find it on
the eighteen over seventeen D quarter, you'll find it on the thirty two D
or thirty two D quarter, you'llfind it on the twenty one D half.
So I mean this is oh andthe twenty one D Mercury dime.
So it's it's a very distinct, you know, mint mark. And it

(29:53):
seems to me like the inside ofthe d kind of has it kind of
looks like a house. Yeah, that's kind of what I think. Now,
it's like the triangle, but Itend to think it looks more like
a house. It kind of lookslike the state of Indiana. Really well,
it looks like going on if youhave flipped it over. Yeah,

(30:15):
this is par and wow green label. That's an amazing coin. That is
heavy duty. And I'm really inceedinglyglad that you brought that to the show
because you're probably still gonna get yourbucketed. We'll see what happens. Hey,
look, I'm bringing the heavy guns. You got a fifty cal.

(30:37):
I'm here, do it, Sokill me here, killing me, I'm
here, do it, Mike.Mike cracks up that every time. So,
if you guys have been paying attentionto our socials you have brought,
you may have seen this piece. You may not have seen this piece.
This is a piece that didn't actuallywalk into my office, raw in the

(31:02):
in the rawest force state, inits natural state. And it's not a
coin or a piece of paper money. It is a letter. Now this
handwritten letter says Springfield, Illinois,July nineteenth, eighteen sixty one, says
George H. Appleton esquire, dearsir here with I send you my autograph

(31:26):
which your request yours truly a Lincoln. So this is a autograph request from
Abraham Lincoln. Now that the mostof the letter was actually written by his
secretary, but he did sign theletter. So I bought this letter raw,
and I thought, you know what, I need to get this thing

(31:47):
authenticated. So we send it offto PSA and had them take a look
at it, where they said, yes, that is one authentic, but
also it is grated Jim meant ten. So this is an MS seventy of
Abraham Lincoln signatures. You can't getone any finer than this. And it's
actually really cool because it's a littlepiece over here on the side you see

(32:12):
this is actually in bossing from thelaw office which he worked at in Springfield.
So very very cool. But there'sa couple other things that make this
really Neat July nineteenth, eighteen sixtyone, do you know what happened that
day? What battle? Okay?Eighteenth one? This is after his election,

(32:34):
but before his inauguration. Wait aminute. He was elected in November
and thisted when January January nineteenth, eighteen six January. Okay, yeah,
you're right, he had not beenHe won't be inaugurated for another month and
a half. Yep. That day, January nineteenth, eighteen sixty one,
Georgia left the Union a very veryinteresting piece. I thought it was.

(32:59):
Okay, I'm not gonna go.I thought it was some fortant Georgia.
My teeth is close enough. That'sgood. So that is what we bought.
Like I said, it's a veryinteresting piece. Yeah, the Lincoln
signature is clearly in a different penyep and literally pen and you know this
kind of look. I don't wantto draw over your thing because my thing
is way cooler, but it's kindof it kind of shows you what a

(33:22):
cool guy Lincoln was. Yeah,I think so too. I thought I
thought it was super cool. Andit does have a new owner. Me.
I bought it. I own,I bet you do. No,
I mean like I bought it.I bet you did. Because it's like
it is just super cool. It'slike Indiana was the was the birthplace or

(33:46):
no, Kentucky was the birthplace ofLincoln. Indiana che at home. Yes,
yeah, and then he got smartand moved to Illinois. It was
smart, but it was something gothim to the presidency. There you go.
So that's it. Those are twoI think absolute smoke shows of pieces.

(34:08):
I know I'm a little biased towardsmine. And if you go strictly

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
