Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon, welcome of the Culture News.
My name is David, So we rouin have the pleasure
to have today on Iheartradeo and many other platforms the
one and only a wonderful audience named Dan Mayo. Dan
Mayo has released a great new track called Larry the Cap,

(00:21):
which we're going to play and premiere right here on iHeartRadio.
We're so glad to have him with us today over
the phone. This is a wonderful Canadian autist and we're
so glad that he is joining us today. Mister Dan Mayo,
how are you today?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
I'm fine. It's a hot day in July. But other
than that, it's good.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
It's good indeed, So we're so glad to have you.
So would you be so kind to let us know
where are you from and how did you start music?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Oh? I started music in high school. I played the
concert band and the announced band. I played the clarinet
and saxophone. But then when I got the university, I
took up guitar.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
That's beautiful. And who are your music influences the audience?
Who have inspired you? Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Influences? Yes? Well, given my age, I would be described
as an old folky left over from the nineteen sixties.
So you know that here Peter Paul and Mary phil Oaks,

(01:37):
you name them Pete Seeger from the folk revival period
in the sixties. Wed.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Indeed, you're naming the best and we are so glad
again to have you with us today. This is the
one and on names.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
That Dan may you so now fast forwarding to your
great new track called Larry, can you tell us what
is the story of that song and what was the
process of making it?

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, you know, my mom's side, I'm British. My dad's
side is Newfoundland. But my mom, you know, she came
from Carpentry, England, and she was always a huge cat lover.

(02:26):
She came she moved to Canada as a young woman,
but she always kept very much in touch with the
British roots. So she passed away a few years ago
at the age of ninety nine. And when I saw
this news about Larry the Cat last year. The British

(02:48):
elections were on last year, if you remember, and there
was a reference to Larry the Cat, I said, what
the hell's that got to do with the British election,
So so I looked it up. If you google Larry
the Cat. He's all over the internet. Man, he's a
rock star in England. He lives at ten Downing Street

(03:11):
and he's the official cat in residence of the Prime Minister.
So I thought, okay, well, but then it turns out
he's on his sixth prime minister. I said, wow, now
that's something. So it was funny, you know. Now they
have been turning over their prime ministers quite quickly in England.

(03:35):
One lasted only about seven weeks I think, and another
one lasted four or five months. But so that's why
he's on his sixth prime minister. Now he's an elderly cat.
I think he's seventeen or eighteen. Now another're already talking
about pensioning him off or you know, pre planning his funeral.

(03:55):
So this is getting ridiculous. And he's got all these
video clips on the internet. He's got like a million
followers on Instagram. People I don't think in North America
know much about the cat at ten Downing Street, you know,
the Prime Minister's residents. But by being half British, I thought, okay,

(04:17):
I'll write a song about this. This is getting ridiculous
that a cat would be that famous, and then I
found out, Oh, the new prime minister who just came
in last what was it, fall in August or September,
He's bringing his own cat. And I thought, okay, now
there's a story. Yeah, what's going to happen with those

(04:39):
two cats. So that's how it came about. And I'm
sure my mom would be very pleased that I wrote.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
It, And indeed, thank you for sharing this, this beautiful story,
and this is indeed a very lovely, lovely song. So
before we start to say goodbye to each other and
we start to play your beautiful and you track, what
are your projects?

Speaker 2 (05:04):
What is coming up for you? Well, I'm just in
the middle of recording a song, an environmental song for
a group I know that lives all about twenty miles
from me in Arnprior, Ontario, just outside Ottawa, and they're
trying to save an old growth pine forest from development,

(05:29):
and so I'm helping them out. But I said, look,
you need a mascot or a hero or something. I mean,
they've got petitions and lawn signs and that's all great,
but you know, hearts and minds. So I came up
with a character for them, and of course the character
has a song. The song the hero who's going to
save the pine forest is called pine Cone Pete. It's

(05:54):
a country acoustic country style because you know it's up
the Ottawa Valley. They're three people up there, and uh
so I've gotta hand pop it on order, you know,
so pine Home pet can be with me on the stage.
And uh we're gonna do a children's book about pine

(06:15):
Con Pete. So that's the latest project. Come on, so fun.
You're trying to have fun with music.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right, Yeah, And you're having fun. That is one thing
for Sharre And we're so glad to to to to
talk about you into in to feature yourself and your
wonderful music. This is Dan Mayo with his great new
track on Larry the Cat. We're so glad to have

(06:42):
him today. Would you like to share a word before
we we play your music to alle Well?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I thank you, thank you very much David for giving
me this opportunity. I heart radio. I don't know if
you have many in your listening zone there and you're
from New York I gother. I guess there would be
some British X pat so there might get a chuckle,
But really, I hope that iHeart UK plays that because

(07:11):
Larry is famous in the UK.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Well now it would be famous all over the world.
I hope, uh too. Kindiful ladies and gentlemen, My name
is David So I had the pleasure, don't I heard
when you on the Carture News, the wonderful mister Dan
Mayo Mayo spelled m A y oh. He has released
