Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon. Welcome on the Culture News.
My name is David, so we Roy and I have
the pleasure to have to do night Heart Radio all
the Culture News and many other platforms. The wonderful artist
is called Nella. It's Nela. She has released a wonderful
new track called Then That Kitty, Then That Kitty. We

(00:24):
are so glad to feature it exclusively on night Heart Radio.
But right now you don't need to go anywhere else
because she's right here, right now with us to talk
to us about this great new track. Nella, how are
you today, I'm doing wonderful.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Thank you so much for having me today, and I'm
so excited to be talking to you about dan da Kitty.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Well, I'm so glad to have you so, thank you
so much for being with us. So the first question
I have for you, can you tell us more of yourself?
Can you tell us where you're from and perhaps how
did you start music? Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Absolutely, I am originally from Cameroon. It's a small country
in West Africa. I was born there, but I was
raised in Los Angeles. So right before my preteen, my parents,
my family and I moved to LA I did not
jump into music right away. I went to school, but

(01:21):
music was always in my heart and the passion never died.
So when I finished, I felt I was ready to
pursue that passion of mine.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
And indeed you had a beautiful path. And we say
hello to all the beautiful people of Cameroon and day.
So who are the autists that you grew up listening to?
My artist?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
The music that I grew up listening to, it's so eclectic,
probably because my parents were world travelers. So in addition
to listening to Cameroon and divas like Shallow Dipanda Anianzueer,
I was also listening to Philakuti from Nigeria, the father
of afrobeats, jars, jazz blues, James Brown, who actually worked

(02:13):
with a Camonian artist called Andre Maritala, who pioneered the
rhythm that you hear in Dan da Kitty. So it
was a very have a very eclectic, you know taste,
and of course.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
R and B and indeed beautiful R and B music
which we love to hear. So now thanks forwarding to
this great new track called Dan Dak Kitty. First of all,
what does it mean? Dan Dak Kitty?

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Dan da kitty means has two colloquial meaning. The literal
meaning of dan da kitty, which is a phrase that
we say in Sethe which is my native tongue, means
slowly but surely you will get there. And we also
say dan da kitty in jovial settings, like when we're

(03:02):
ready to dance, like we say dan dak kitty kitty,
and so that that's your your call for, you know,
coming on the dance for the dance for and breaking
down all your.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Moves and and and we love that. Now I'm going
to say dan that kitty all the time. Yes, tell
us the story of that song, like, how was it created,
what is the story behind it?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Yes, the story of that song is really my story.
Growing being born in Cameroon and growing up in La
I had those dual worlds that I always felt I
wanted to please and I it took me a long
time to not really have to be affected by the

(03:48):
tension of those two worlds, the African culture and a
Western culture, and that definitely affected my art. And it's
only recently that I was able to accept that I
am the best of both worlds. And that's what you
hear in Dan da Kitty. You will hear those Cameronian percussions,
which is called bensikin you would hear hip hop based

(04:11):
because I'm from LA and I grew up around hip hop,
and definitely, world is really an anthem to honoring your
roots and finding yourself. And so Danda Kitty is a
medley of sounds that describe who I am as a
person and as an artist, especially since I've gone through

(04:32):
the tension of you know, wanting to please both worlds,
you know, the Cameroonian culture and the American culture. So
I found my way and it has changed the way
I write my songs, the way I produce my sounds
or co produce my sound. And that's what you hear
in Danda Killy.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
And we love this great new track of yours. So
before we start to say goodbye to each other, what
is your next bred?

Speaker 2 (05:01):
My next project is definitely rolling out an EP. I
am so so so excited about that. I'm still working
on it, but that would be the next thing that
I do.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Well, We'll be there to appload you and to support.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
You in here.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
So before we play your track, is there any word,
any message you will like to pass on?

Speaker 2 (05:24):
I want to pass on that it is okay to
honor your roots and to stand tall in who you
are because the world is beautiful, much more beautiful once
we're able to present ourselves one hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Oh and we love that message. Indeed, nothing more beautiful
than honoring your your roots. We love that, Ladies and gentlemen.
