Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon, Welcome on the Culture News.
My name is David Cerebro and I am so happy
to have today on the Culture News on iHeartRadio Wonderful Artists.
His name is Ricky Dulan. Dulan is spelled D double
O L A N Ricky Dulan. We're so glad to
(00:23):
have him today. He has released a new track called
you Got Somebody Right Now? Please will come Ricky and Ricky,
how are you today?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I'm very good, David, thanks for having me on it
to honor and a pleasure to be here.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
It's all the pleasure is really mine.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
So you're from the UK, we say hello to all
our wonderful audience in the UK. Can you please tell
us a little bit more of yourself, like how did
you start music and what have you done so far?
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
So, I've been a musician since I was at university.
Really when I was nineteen years old, and I went
backpacking around the world for four years to many different
countries like Southeast in Southeast Asia and Australia, and that's
really where I kind of learned to sing. And the
first time I really sang in front of audiences and
(01:15):
I went on a bit of a journey really and
got into the kind of rock and roll side of life,
not just the music, but the life, including the whole
nine yards of the rock and roll lifestyle. And it
took me to a place of kind of hitting rock
bottom in a way of depression and drugs and.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Alcohol and all of this type of thing.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
And one day I ended up homeless in the city
of Manchester in England, and I was playing music on
the streets to just get enough money to eat and
try and get somewhere to sleep every night.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
And I walked into.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
A church to get out of the rain because it
rains a lot in Manchester, and I asked to God.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
I didn't believe in. I said, if you're real, please
help me.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
From that moment, the supernatural encounter with Jesus Christ transform
my life three point sixty. I'm now a gospel rock
and roll musician, a pasta and married to a wonderful
wife with two children, and my life took a three
sixty turn around. So now I do my music to
try and give people a bit of light and hope,
just like what I needed when I was down and
(02:20):
out on the streets.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Wow, this is a beautiful path.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
And congratulations really for all that you have done and
how destiny has brought you to the right place.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
So really congratulations. So now fast forwarding a little bit
to your new track, which we're so yes to play to.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Don iHeart when you and the culture news you got
somebody tell us about it.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, So it's I call it gospel rock and roll,
and maybe other people will have different descriptions of the genre,
but you know, my background is a rock and roll
music like things like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Oasis from
from England and then and then I got into the
gospel side of things, which really did a lot in
(03:07):
my in my transformative time.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
So that I call this gospel rock and roll.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
And it's a song of hope, and it's a song
for anybody out there that maybe has gone through something
or maybe having you know, not the easiest of time.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
We all, we all go through different things in life.
That is life.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
We've got our own roller coasters and our own challenges
and hurdles. And this song is letting the listener know,
letting everybody know that you're not alone. You've got somebody,
You've got somebody watching over you and all you've got
to do is reach out and just know you're not alone.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
So it's a song of hope.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
And indeed it is a beautiful song. It is a
very a song that feels almost like an anthem, and
thank you glad we need songs like that.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Who are your music influences? The artists who have inspired
you the most?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Yes, I mentioned the Beatles and a way Bob Dylan.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
They're kind of the three that really have been a
big influence in my kind of musical journey and becoming
a musician. But when I got when I finally got
into the church, after I went into that cathedral that
day as a homeless street musician and asked God for help,
I went on a journey of discovering gospel music. And
(04:23):
I discovered it through studying American music because I wanted
to get into the history of popular music, like how
did we get to this point in time in popular music?
And that kind of hunger and that curiosity took me
to roots American music, such as country and bluegrass and
(04:43):
the blues, And in the middle of all of that,
almost at the root was gospel music, and I found
artists like Mahaileia Jackson, Shirley Caesar, sister Zzetta Farp, and
their music was touching me in a way that note
of the music had ever touched before in terms of
you know, blues and rock and roll and the other
things that I was into. I loved it and it
(05:06):
was deep, but it was deep in more of an
entertaining way.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
And then when I was kind of connecting.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
To these great gospel artists, it was deep in a
way that didn't feel like entertainment.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
It felt like something more powerful.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
It felt like something more more meaningful, and I really
wanted to explore that. And that's what led me into
walking past the church one day and I heard this
type of worship gospel music coming out of the church,
and I went in and I wanted to book them
for one of my events, and instead I ended up
going to the Sunday service. And that's how that was,
(05:39):
like over fifteen years ago, and now I've never missed
the Sunday service since. So the gospel music has really
influenced me a lot. And once I got into the church,
it was worship music like Chris Tomlin and Hillsong, and
you know, this really impacted me in a big way.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
And he died.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
We was so glad that he brought you so so,
so so much in what beautiful indeed, what a beautiful
music that you are bringing.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Us this beautiful on your track.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
You got Somebody before we start to say goodbye to
each other with the one and only Riki Dulan. What
are your next projects? What is coming up for you?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Yeah, I've got a couple.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Of new songs in the pipeline. After You've got Somebody.
I've got one called Wan't Back Down, and that's it's
another one that's kind of We designed that one as
an anthem, an anthem for the persecuted, an anthem for
the unfairly treated. And there's many people around the world
like that. Now, even if I want to talk about
(06:42):
Christian brothers and sisters around the world, there are many
that have been persecuted in many different countries like Nigeria
and Armenia and a lot of countries around the world.
So there's a lot of persecution, and not just around
the world, but also in my home country of the
United Kingdom, where freedom of speech is under attack, and
also in America there's a lot of issues as well.
So the next song is really a song of resilience
(07:07):
and a song of resistance to say, no matter what
you throw out us, no matter what you do, we
won't back down.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
So that's coming soon and we are so happy to
hear that, and we will be there definitely for you
to promote your beautiful music.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Thank you of course, ladies and gentlemen.
