Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, Good afternoon, Welcome on the Culture News.
My name is David So we wrote it. Have the
pleasure to have to don't know how to on the
Culture News. A wonderful audience from friends. His name is
Switch the MC. Switch the EMC has released a new
EP which we're going to talk today and he has

(00:23):
a lot of showcases and a lot of great things.
We're so glad to have him Switch the MC. How
are you today, I'm doing good. Thanks on yourself, I'm
doing wonderful. Thank you very much. So you're from friends,
but you're speaking very well English, so I'm so glad
we can do that interview in English for our audience,
but we have also a great audience for the French language.

(00:45):
So can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Where are you from and how did you start music?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
So I'm switched to MC. I'm originally from benin West Africa,
so and then I grew up in England in London.
I've spent most of my life in London, and I
came to France quite recently, but has been in as
part of the French continent. I speak French very well.
I got into music originally just to like explain a

(01:15):
little bit more about my life, about the struggles that
I've had, been someone in foster care, being someone who's
not always had the easiest cards in life, and so
that was how I got into into music.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Well, we're so glad that you know, life and your
path has brought you to music. Who are the music
artists who have influenced you the most?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
So I draw a lot of inspiration from English artists,
mainly I can name Dave for example, jme E Skepta
gets I also have a lot of inspiration from a
lot of American artists. For example, the first artist in
the Rap Star that I started listening to was Mac Miller.

(02:02):
That was my first inspiration and first intro into rap.
I know a lot of people start with Biggie Small
and Tupac, but Mac Miller was like my stepping stone
to getting into music, and then from there I kind of, yeah,
listen to a lot of Anderson, pack et cetera.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
And yeah, you use signing amazing artists, so you can
only sound great, you know. So now, first forwarding to
your new EP, which was so glad to feature today,
what was the process of making it?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
So the process of making this EP. So I released
one about two years ago called Latin, which was everything
about anger, the rage, et cetera. And so for this
one it's called Smoking Section. So for me, the whole
project was talking about everything that's inside the relationship, the good,
the bad, the fire, the water, all that builds up

(02:53):
into a relationship. And so I wanted to do it
in an Afro style and also intertwine into this everything
about who I am. So we have a lot of
beat makers from Africa and from Beninsa, where I'm from,
and so I wanted to branch all of this together
to bridge all of this together to create an Afro
kind of style EP.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
And you created the beautiful music, and this new EP
of yours is getting already great, great, great attention. I
believe you had, not a long time ago, a big
event to celebrate it. So now before we start to
say goodbye to each other, we start to play some

(03:35):
excerpts of your new EP. What are your next projects?

Speaker 2 (03:41):
So my next projects are I'm releasing the Well, I'm
gonna be working on an album to kind of finish
this whole EP trilogy together, and before that, I'm going
to be working on a lot of singles with a
lot of different artists, branching out into different genres of music,
and also putting forward what I love the most, which

(04:02):
is technology. By nature, I develop a lot of applications,
so I'm going to be building a few applications to
help artists along the way in their career as well.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
And indeed will be there to celebrate you in to
applaud you with your beautiful music. So anything you want
to say to our audience before we say goodbye to
each other.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Well, first of all, I would just like to thank
you for this opportunity and to your audience as well.
If you haven't listened to my EP Smoke and Sets,
go listen to it. A lot of new things come in,
a lot of different styles of music coming in the future,
and there's always a song for anyone and everyone in
my style of music.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
And we are so glad to have you. We thank
you for your beautiful music and for all the great
things you are doing. This is Switch the MC. So
where the artist's name came from.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
So the artist's name came because I was actually on
stage in the UK, like when I first started rapping,
you know, one of those open mic events that you
tend to go to when you begin as an artist.
And so I was at this open mic event and
the artist before me was performing really really badly, and
so the crowd was a little bit harsh that night.

(05:17):
They were kind of booing and screaming, you know, switched
the MC, changed the artist. And so originally I'd signed
up with my original, you know, street name, legal name,
and so when I got on stage, I was like, no, no, no,
you know what my name, switched the MC because it
was just, yeah, the crowd was just chanting it like
switch themc you know, get this guy off stage, and
so I thought, you know, okay, I'm gonna take this
vibe and I'm going to go with it. And then

(05:37):
I got on stage and I absolutely killed my thirty minutes.
And so yeah, so since then, the name's kind of stuck.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Well I really love it. I really loved the story.
