(00:21):
Christmas is coming gone, and itis back to hockey action. We're here
at the Debate Hockey podcast for anap. So we haven't had hockey for
three days now. I don't knowwhy, Blake, but it seems like
these three days have been very long. Oh it's complete opposite for me.
(00:41):
I feel like it was like thefastest three days of all time because I
just like, yeah, but butI was watching football. It's ice watching
some football. Yeah, I wantto be a pretty good game. Three
pretty good games. Uh yeah, other than the one uh Monday nighter,
(01:02):
but uh yeah, I don't know. We went up to Regina for Christmas.
My mom's side all got together.Every other year we do that,
So spent a couple of days upin Regina, had to work, had
to come back Christmas night because Ihad to work this morning at at six
am. So uh, a littlea little bit of a quick turnaround,
got a few hours of sleep andthen uh yeah, back to work.
(01:25):
I'm I'm off, I'm off myscooter and uh foots heeling up nice.
So it's it's getting a little betterpost surgery, so up moving around.
Uh now, I just gotta workon kind of strengthening my leg because it's
pretty weak because I've been having beenon it for a while. Yeah,
it's so it's good to you're gettingprogress, Sarah. It was a very
good Christmas, and I'm glad yourfamily. What did you do for Christmas?
(01:49):
I spent time at my parents' houseand my in laws for uh yesterday
for a while, but uh yeah, I had a real good time at
my parents' house and the family hadfun. Kids, Uh all had a
good time, and I was nicetoo. We just always Florida. So
how was your holiday at Florida? It was good. The weather was junk,
but we made the best of itand we had a good time each
(02:12):
and every day. And that wasa good long week. And then we
got back and right into the Christmasso it's been go go go, and
today was a rest and recoop dayand back to normal tomorrow. Did did
you do anything like cool in Florida? Did you go to any like games?
Any three and events? We wentkayaking one day with these like clear
(02:36):
kayaks, and we had dolphins abouta foot and a half from us in
the water. So that was prettycool, nice, nice, pretty cool,
pretty cool. It did a lotof fun things. It was a
little chilly, little rainy there, but I made the best of it,
had a good time. I wasfun taking family vacations. But good to
get back, good to get backin the routine and it'd be good.
(02:58):
But tomorrow to get back to somehockey action and yeah, all's good.
Yep, for sure, hundred percent. So last week, I believe this
was Thursday. I don't know.My days are all messed up now,
but it was a night Edmonton andNew Jersey were playing, Yeah, and
New Jersey was beating Edmonton by two. I think, yeah, going into
(03:21):
the third and I'm like, Ido not see Edmonton losing this game.
So I went in losing or winning. I didn't see Edmonton losing that game.
I thought they were going to comeback. I just my gut told
me they cannot afford to lose thisgame. Yeah, So Cook went into
my bet site, threw down tenbucks and pulled out one hundred and thirty.
(03:42):
So that not bad. Don't getaddicted to gambling, buddy, No,
I don't, because I know yet. Yeah, you know, you
know who takes that big winning, then you're hooked. The hook's already in
your mouth. You already been onthe damn hook. You're You're screwed,
You're drude. I've been doing itfor fifteen years, so I'm not screwed.
(04:05):
I love The other night I watchedToronto Buffalo nine to three, Don't
you just Don't you just love anice ass? And I loved it when
Buffalo played the gold song for theMaple Leafs. I love, oh Man,
trolls. Trolls, trolls, trolls. World Juniors have zero excitement this
(04:27):
year. Again. I just likethey're on too early, man, Like
it's it's just a three. I'mworking, like I tried on today.
I was, I was talking.I was talking to my cousin the other
day and I was just like, you know, the older you get,
Christmas just doesn't feel the same anymore, you know what I mean, Like
(04:48):
it's for sure for me, it'sjust like a for me, it's just
another day. I mean, Igot little kids, I got little cousins,
right, and it's exciting for them, and it exciting to see their
reaction and when they open the giftsin the morning. But it's like,
man, I remember, Christmas usedto be like the one of the best
days of growing up. And youget older, and you get older and
(05:10):
your world. You know, Iwas excited for Boxing day to watch the
World Juniors, and you get olderand you just you just lose a little
interest. I guess. So thatpart kind of sucks because Christmas was it
is one of my favorite holidays. But it's just I don't know. Every
year that I get older, itjust seems like another day. I don't
know, It's just maybe I'm notthe only one that's like that, but
(05:30):
I's just the way I feel.I just I don't know why. Though.
Today I turned on the World Juniorsand I was just like, I'm
just not feeling it. Yeah,I don't know, I'm not feeling it.
I honestly, I don't think Canadais gonna be in the gold medal
game. I just I just wantto know you want to know another reason
why? I think that we allkind of feel like it. We're just
(05:53):
not feeling it. It's not thesame not having Russia. Well yeah,
exactly, exactly, that's one hundredpercent true. Like like you remember that
you remember that game where Canada wasdown six to one in the semifinals to
Russia with like ten minutes left inthe third. They always made that comeback,
like that's one of my favorite memoriesfrom the World Juniors. And it's
(06:14):
just like, you need to havehuge, a huge country. You need
to have Finland, Sweden, Canada, US and Russia. If though,
if one of those is not inthere, it's just not the same.
It's just not Yeah, well,don't don't be don't don't be sleeping on
Slovaks and that, and Shackie isa not at all. I'm not at
all. And as as the yearshave went on, I've become slobacks,
(06:38):
almost Beatingnada last year in the goldmedal. Over time, listen, I
become much more interested in those teams. I'm just talking on a pure traditionalist.
Yeah, it was Russia, Sweden, Canada and sometimes the US.
Yeah, it's just that's the wayit was. And now we're missing a
key cog and it's taking some ofthe luster out of it. And I
(07:01):
think having it in Sweden isn't helpinganything at all either. Not that it's
not fair to not have, youknow, they need to host it too.
I get that. I'm not likeyou not having a CAD every year
though, or the US, butI mean it just I don't know.
I don't know. I just thisyear just seems different. Yeah, lots
(07:26):
of talk about on the show today, the Canucks Christmas miracle. We're going
to talk about that, and we'regoing to talk about Caps move trades,
waivers, fires, Michigan's goalie searches, and the most hated teams in hockey.
All right, Like, this ismy Christmas gift to you. It's
(07:48):
not often your team, it's relevantin a positive way, and now they're
the headline of the show today.Man, it is this is a Christmas
miracle in Vancouver. It is thisis the first time, this is the
first time since we've been doing thisshow that Vancouver has been actually good.
(08:09):
Now the number one team in theNational Hockey League as we went to Christmas
break, I don't know, prettyimpressive forty nine points in thirty five games.
Now they don't have the highest winpercentage, the Arrangers hold that,
but it's still pretty damn impressive. This team, who many had pegged as
a marginal playoff team, has foundthe success that they've had, and even
(08:33):
more so, has somewhat I mean, yes, we're only not quite a
halfway through. We're getting close tothe half wim mark, but they've they've
held it pretty solid with consistency wise, it's stayed pretty solid. Yeah yeah,
I mean, you know, thestat that jumps out at the page
(08:54):
to me when I think about theirstart and is when they're leading after forty
minutes, they are twenty No,they're twenty o. You remember last year
the first ten games where they hadeight multi goal leads and they were zero
to eight after forty They blew allthose leads at the start. They easily
(09:16):
could have been eight and two andthey were nine and one. This year,
this year, they keep the footon the gas. They play good
defensively, they they are protecting leads, and it's it's just night and day
the structure and the defensive defensive sideof it, and it's it's honestly,
(09:39):
like I've talked about this on thepod before, it is absolutely remarkable what
Patrick Alvin and Jim Brutherford I've donewith this defense in the last eleven twelve
months. Okay, but blake timeoff for one second. It is very
vastly improved, and I will givethem all the credit, but let's see
how it handles through the the gruntof the season. I think there's without
(10:07):
Susie too, They're they're doing No, I'm with you, I'm I'm all
positive about this, but I dohave to just I think we wait to
give credit until after the season's overto the management staff because is are things
going wonderful? Damn right? AndI think this Vancouver Canucks team stays in
the top three in the Pacific forsure. I did look and a strength
(10:31):
of schedule is not in their favoron the back half of the season.
That doesn't Yeah, they played Vegasin l A the last week of the
year, that's fine, it's it. Oh everyone's like, oh, you
played San Jose four times, youplayed Edmonton four times. Everybody plays the
(10:52):
same amount of games. No,I'm not saying that at all. And
boy, you shouldn't say Edmonton becauseEdmonton's a really good hockey team that's gonna
I think, in my mind makethe playoffs this year. But I think
this team is what they've done isastonishing. I mean, they're getting a
good goaltending. Demko's tied for thelead league lead and shut ups with three.
He's in the top ten and bowlssay percentage in goals against average,
(11:13):
and most importantly, he stays healthy. He's healthy. That angle you hit
the nail on the head. That'swhat it was going to come down to.
Dempco played twenty three games last year. If like I said, if
I said this at the start ofthe year, I said, if you
get fifty to fifty five games fromthatcher Dempko, the Canucks should be there
at the end. They should bein a playoffs spot. At Demco,
(11:35):
it plays fifty to fifty five games, and what they've gotten, what they've
gotten from Casey to Smith, it'sunbelievable. He's got a nine to two
four save. I think he's sevenand two. He just come in.
He's come in and stabilized a Canucksposition that they haven't had stabilized in four
(11:58):
years. They've had to ride Demcointo the ground because they didn't have a
competent backup that can come in andpush him. And they went out and
prioritize that and got a Goaliad thatcan push them. I really thought they
did when you did too, whenthey had Halac, I thought that was
a good one. I thought thatwas a good pickup. I thought he
was going to be that backup forVancouver. Yeah, I I did too.
(12:22):
I I did, because he's hewas. He was good in Boston,
he was good in the Islanders, right like he was. I don't
know, he just it for somereason, it just didn't work. And
right, it happens. But butbut you you've now have the option to
rest Dempko a few more if ifyou have to save him for some games
(12:43):
down the stretch, and you should, right because he the Smith has earned
that right. And I'm not sayinglike I'm not saying like Zadorov is like
a huge reason why they've had allthe success, but their third nine and
went straight and for him, likehis his presence, his that that pairing
(13:05):
has been really good. I wasvery skeptical, but now you got put
together in Calgary and they blown meaway. They I told you, Myers
somehow stabilized Myers. Tyler Myers hasthe same amount of points as Jonathan Huberto.
Can you believe that? Oh?Come on here, we're a I'm
just joking. I had to getthat one in there on the Poe.
(13:26):
I don't know. I don't know. Their first in Golden Frenchial, their
first and goals for per game, their first and goals against per game.
They have a top five power play. They have one of the most exciting
third lines in the NHL. Thatthat Joshua Garland Blueger line is so fun
to watch like they are, they'reon a tear right now. I'm not
(13:48):
saying it's gonna last forever, butit's not. They're getting a lot of
depth scoring and when Miller and Petersonand Hughes take a night off, that
line has been stepping up in abig way. So I'm not saying they're
gonna I'm not what's on Miller Pettersonand he was their top three in points
this year. Miller has third withforty eight, Hughes his eighth forty four,
(14:09):
and Peterson is nineth with forty three, and then you have brockcasts second
and goals with twenty four. Yeah, that's many a huge balance back.
But I will tell you this.I will tell you this, They're not
gonna sustain this the whole year.Everybody knows that. No, they won't.
But there there are still very, very formidable. But they they haven't
(14:30):
had a lot of injuries, whichalso it's Susie, Susie that's a big
loss. But he's on his wayback. He's on his way back,
but Noah, Juleison stepped up andplayed some big minutes too. Like that's
it's the next man up with thisteam. And that's pocket style, right,
which you haven't had an injury toPatterson or Miller or one of the
(14:50):
key cogs, you know, oror most importantly, like we touched on
a little bit ago, you know, look at the health of Demko and
look at what that just that oneone thing has changed this team. And
well, it's just they've just madeit easier to play net for him.
They just defend way harder. Well, is finally an issue? Right,
(15:13):
Well, yeah, that's right,Like like talk ittt sat Kuzmenko, he
sat JT. Miller for God's sakes, like he it's you're not gonna play
my way, Okay, you're gonnabench, You're gonna sit. I mean,
it's it's it's pretty simple. LikeI think Talkett has he got that
country club vibe out of there,Like I feel like it was like a
a pretty loose, non non accountablegroup and you get new management in there,
(15:37):
you get you get synergy, synergyfrom the top all the way down,
like you got they brought in theowner, brought into coach before you
hired a president of the GM,Like it was backwards from the start last
year and it was full of drama. And now the coaches, the management
has their coach and and playing theway they want to play. And it's
(15:58):
showing like I'm not saying they're gonnasustain first in the league, but there's
no reason why they can't sustain beinga top five team. Like I got
that they've shown me this. Thisisn't just a ten games sample size.
We're approaching half a season here.Like they've shown that they can play the
same way over and over and overand over. There there's a lot of
(16:21):
repeatability to their game. And Idon't know, I'm out of loss for
words because it's just so fun towatch right now. They're a fun They're
a fun hockey team you watch.Do I think now this no, But
you know what, I would evenworry about where they sit in the league.
I think it's just so important tobe, you know, in the
Pacific Division. I think it's soimportant to be you know in that well,
I I think you got you gottatry and if you're Vancouver, you
(16:45):
gotta try and win your division orget second because so you have home iice
advantage in the first round, right, you want to either get first or
second when I get first or secondin your division? And uh the fact,
what's that your biggest test in thedivision. You know, if you
told me that LA was more ofa competition for the for the division lead
(17:08):
than Vegas, I would agree withyou because and well not just because LA
has played like a league low thirtygames, but they're they seem to be
a little bit more consistent in Vegasright now is they're kind of a little
up and down. They're running intoinjuries with their goaltending. What did you
(17:33):
against Florida? They got they gotout shot like forty two. They were
getting out shot like forty forty eight. Part of it, you know,
the Canadian franchise to sit atop theNHL's overall standings at Christmas since five senators.
Do you know the last team tosit atop the NHL standings at Christmas
(17:56):
won the Stanley Cup? I justa fact. I know last year,
No, the last team to finishfirst place at Christmas won the Stanley Cup.
You know who it was? Didyou see that stat? The two
thousand uh two thousand and eight twothousand and nine Detroit Red Wings. Oh
(18:18):
wonderful. That was a long timeago. Dude. I don't know if
it's just a status, just astat is just a stat, but uh
no, it's incredible. Last year, last year, the biggest thing was
they didn't defend. They didn't defendat all. And now they're playing hard
defensively. Their Fords are playing defensively, they're playing as a five man unit.
(18:41):
They're making it easier on their goaltendersto play net. The Penley Kills
struggled a little teeny bit, butit's getting better. Power play's good.
You're getting stops, you're getting timelygoals, you're getting everything right now.
It's a it's a fun time tobe a Canucks fan for the first time
in about eight years. Well, the biggest thing, and I agree with
(19:03):
everything you just said there, butaccountability is finally okay, hang on,
one more thing here, one morething before before we go to the next
topic. I think Vancouver. I'mbeing dead honest, I'm not bullshitting you.
They're gonna go all in at thedeadline. I am dead serious with
you. They are gonna go allin with this group because you have to
(19:27):
pay Peterson next year. You haveto pay Heronic next year, and you
got eight pending UFAs. This teamis going to be very hard to keep
together this summer, and they aregoing to capitalize on this. On this
group right now. The way they'replaying right now, they for me,
I think they go they need togo get a top six forward. They
need maybe get a middle six four, and they need to get a depth
(19:48):
defenseman. They're so I think topsix four. I would you know who
I would call up right now.I would call up the Pittsburgh Penguin to
see what it costs to get JakeKent's pending UFA. There's a there's a
relationship with the there's a really therelationship with both franchises with Rutherford and Alvin,
Pittsburgh kind of sputtering. Not ina playoff spot, maybe that maybe
(20:12):
that's a fit. I think yougo out and get a middle six Ford,
and I think you go get adepth defense. But I think there
are three pieces away from being aserious contender to do some damage. So
you think a depth defense man likeA yeah, I think you need one
more depthy man gets to listen. No trade cause to by the way,
(20:33):
so I know I'm not saying hewould wave, but like that's the inquire.
Well for sure, I agree,I agree Twick, But I do
think I do think they do needa top six Ford because I like,
I don't think. I don't thinkDji Seppi can can play there the whole
year. No, I don't either. But then where does he move down?
(20:53):
Because you don't want to mess withthat third line? What? Yeah,
I know, like it's such agood problem there. There's such a
good problem to have right now.Right, so, I got that's the
line. That line's been untouched eversince Blueger's coming into the lineup from injury
on time. They haven't even touchedit. So I don't know. As
part of me says, don't fixwhat's not broken, the other part tells
(21:14):
me, you could use the topsix for it. Yeah, to the
quick Christmas miracles and we'll move onor two around the league. Philadelphia third
in the metro to me, that'sa miracle and Nashville and Arizona currently holding
wild card spots. Crazy crazy,Kah. Do you think the Philadelphia gets
top three? I don't do Ithink Philadelphia, No, I don't either,
(21:38):
But do you think they make it. Do you have the balls?
Do you have the balls? Doyou have the balls to tell me Philadelphie
is gonna make the playoffs? Ilooks like it right now. Like check
back with me at mid season.I know that's only ten games away,
but I think it's kicking that questiondown the road. Eh, all right
(22:00):
down the road. Are you alittle girl? I asked you this last
week? Are you concerned with Carolina? He just don't look right right now.
I'm gonna touch on that here comingup, and and there's a reason
and we're going to talk about itshortly here and uh answer that's your question,
(22:23):
like one the one of Nashville andArizona's making the playoffs. I'm saying
it right now. One of themis gonna make the playoffs because kind of
to put more money on Arizona becauseCalgary is pissing around, Seattle's pissing around
Minnesota. You just don't know whatyou're gonna get on any giving game.
And then Edmonton is just Edmonton andeither gonna they're either gonna They're either gonna
(22:48):
have a four to one comeback winagainst the Rangers on the road at the
end of a road trip. Orthey're gonna be up three two to Tapa
Bay and they're gonna lose seven themthree. You know, you you just
don't know what you're getting, youknow what I mean. It's just like
you know why you don't team ever? I know why you don't know because
they don't play defense, and theydon't have a goal, they don't They
(23:11):
just there's no accountability at all. It's it's like there's none. They just
let those guys do whatever they want. Like That's why I was so surprised
when they brought in a coach likethat. I thought they were gonna get
like a like a like a what'sthat what's that guy's name, Jared Gallant
or something, Gerard Gerard Golant,Yeah, like something somebody like that,
(23:34):
or you know what I mean.Like, I didn't think they would go
down the first ever head coach inthe NHL route Again, I got a
feeling that we're gonna be talking aboutEdmonton a lot over the next few weeks.
We we probably will. And Andwhat it surprised me if Eton made
the playoffs, absolutely not. Itwould not surprise anybody. We both picked
them to go to the Stanley CupFinal. Fuck I even picked them to
(23:56):
win the Stanley Cup, so it'sthere. They are a very frustrating team
to watch though, they're just sowildly inconsistent. Yeah, a big shout
out to our sponsor, apparel Bandits. Get your team's team apparel at apparel
bandits dot com. Unbelievably cool stufffrom all the major Browns, ccm Unrell,
(24:18):
they got them all. Check outtheir web page at apparel bandits dot
com. All right, Blake, time to go around. The league Capitals
are moving their arena. The Capitalsof the Wizards are moving their home arena
(24:41):
from DC to Alexandria, Virginia.Did this surprise You can't, Okay.
I am very dumb when it comesto US geography, very dumb. Just
just on the record here, it'sacross the river. I did not know
that where they were Washington. Idid not know that was in Virginia.
(25:03):
I thought Washington was so in state. I am very very dumb, and
I'm like, what Washington, Washington, I know, I'm I said,
what, They're moving Washington to Virginia. And I'm like, oh my god,
that that's literally where they play.So I just had just had a
mind brain fart and uh, yeah, it's it's weird. They're moving them
across the bridge pretty much. SoI don't think it's believe in arena.
(25:26):
It's kind of a cool. Ithink it's I think it's cool. Yeah,
yeah, two trades. I wantto talk about, Oh Tree.
First, talking about Thomas Tatar getsmoved to Seattle from Colorado and I when
I saw this, all I thoughtwas cap dump, Right, I think
(25:47):
we all said that, right,Yeah, cap dump to acquire who I
don't know. That's uh, that'sgonna be. That's kind of kind of
one of my questions, kind ofquestion. Let's leave with an address.
So how much how much was he? This guy's got four points of four
games they could have been using thisguy. Uh, all the thirty eight
(26:14):
games prior to that, I knowhe had nine, he had nine points.
Let me see your teams, teams, team Seattle. I want to
see how much he's making here. He's only making he's only making one point
five. That's not really a capdown, well, not really a cap
frum. But then they gotta startclearing space somewhere, right, you gotta
(26:38):
start something. They're gonna, they'regonna they are going to swing big for
the fences big time. They're probablyon the phone right now with your beloved
Calgary Flames trying to get least Lindhome. That's kind of that would be
my first call. That would bemy first call. You need a second
(27:00):
line center behind McKinnon because Ryan Johansonain't it. He's a good third line
center. He can't drive play behindMcKinnon. And it's just it's just it's
just tough matchups for McKinnon because there'snobody, there's no it's such a huge
drop off between McKinnon and Johansson thatyou're just you're just gonna be stuck with
matchup after matchup after matchup, andit shit is so hard what McKinnon is
(27:23):
during it I was incredible, Likeit is insane. The guy is just
a demon right now. He hadlike a seventeen game point streak or somebody
I had almost forty points. That'sit's it was incredible. But they do
need a center behind McKinnon for theywant to if they want to, they
want to be anywhere, going anywherein the playoffs. I couldn't agree more,
(27:44):
couldn't agree more. Another trade Iwanted to talk about that really surprise
me. Is it Vegas trades LoganThompson to Winnipeg in exchange for Laura and
Bruslaw. No, stop it,stop it. You fell for another fake
tweet again? Then did you knowyou ain't getting me at that ship?
I look for check marks, andthe first thing I do is check names.
(28:07):
Nope, I know. I sawit on two different sites that I
thought. I wonder how many itdoesn't come from Alliott Freeman? It ain't
true? Isn't it funny? Howit's not funny? How trades have Like?
That's too soon for me. Wegot we got pranked about Otani going
to the j So I don't wantto go on no fake that copy.
(28:29):
Next topic still not over. I'mstill heartbroken. So next time Carolina Carolina
Hurricanes, I want to talk tohim, talk about him. You asked
me a little bit ago if Iwas worried about them. We'll talk to
the fans, talk to the fansthat you're their number one fan. This
is your time. I'm not Ipicked them to win the stand the Cup
this year. Uh? You knowthis team, how's everything? And and
(28:52):
now all of a sudden once ittakes takes them so long, right,
to get to get this extremely deepdefense of core, an extremely deep forward
group, and then the goaltending justcrumbles. Well you can't predict him getting
blood clots, No, you can't. But I'm just saying how bad a
(29:12):
timing that is, because just sosure, and that's been a that's been
a reoccurring theme. Not blood clots, but injuries to Freddie Anderson. You
go back to his days in Anaim, you go back to his days in
Toronto. Now you go back toto now in uh in Carolina and they
probably would have been in stell ACup two years ago playing against the Colorado
(29:33):
Avalanche. If Freddie Andson is goingto hurt in the first round, that's
probably probably a legit possibility. Andnow, were you surprised that you got
on waivers? Yeah? Were yousurprised? I was? Well, was
I surprised when the plan was tocall up a guy that's never even played
(29:56):
an American League game? Yeah,I was a little surprised they called up
an EHL guy. Uh Pete trevuh he played, he played in Pinill,
he played in Penticton and uh andthen he played in uh n C
Double A. But uh, yeah, they just you look at that team
you have that they have that Russianguy he had Rant and yet oh that's
(30:18):
a pretty deep thing in net.And now now Anderson gets hurt. Rant
is on waivers, and now you'relike, what's the plan here? I
know you can only I don't know, feel bad. He's a good coach.
Brings another point up that I wantedto touch on today is the goalie
trade market. Like this is ateam. Edmonton's a team, Toronto's a
(30:41):
team. I mean the list goeson and on. There's a lot of
teams looking for goalies. And okay, okay, let's uh, let's go
down. Okay, Uh, Yucsorrows Uh not getting traded? Uh,
what's his name from Arizona? Notgetting traded? That goes down, Marc
Andre Fleury, somebody take somebody takehim? Maybe? Uh, Jacob mark
(31:04):
Strom half retained, intriguing Edmonton, not getting traded, John Gibson, that's
that's Uh. That's a guy thatcould get traded. That's a guy that
could get traded. Mackenzie Blackwood's beenplaying good on a on a poor sons
a team. Maybe does somebody takea flyer on him? I don't know.
But on San Jose sounds that.Yeah, I'm just like the guys
(31:30):
though, like the let me justthink of another example here, Well,
what about uh what about Nadalkovich. Now, who's who's been playing good in
Pittsburgh. Maybe somebody take maybe maybesomebody thinks that he's got his game back.
(31:52):
Like, there's there is some optionsthere, there is some some trade
partners to be had. The priceis going to be high for was ankle,
Yeah, because everybody needs a damngoalie. I know they're gonna they're
gonna create a bidding work, right, I mean Wall goes down with an
injury and all of a sudden, sam sonof can't stop a puck. And
(32:13):
now you got Elliott Friedman saying,oh, Martin Jones saved the leaf season.
But that's crazy to think that MartinJones has come in and played so
well. Right, we talked aboutat the start of the year that could
be a really, really good signing, and right now it is vent minimum
for Martin Jones. That guy wentthirty damn games last year. He's good,
(32:35):
right, Like, that's I don'tknow what about what is Audible gonna
do with with the guy like AntonForsburg I don't know. I don't know.
One thing I want to is thereis there is after our show.
They they did exactly what we talkedabout and they fired DJ Smith Daniel.
It's always after our show. Hey, it's always that. Never can be
(32:57):
breaking news. Ever ever had breakingnews? Have we ever had breaking news?
Maybe a trade? Maybe a trade? I don't know. Well,
we probably had the Connects win intheir first game of the year or something
on time first Place. Just leavethe jokes aside, come on talks.
Mart Han takes over, sends interimcoach and Alfredson behind the bench as an
(33:21):
assistant coach. I'm interested to seethat team. That's there's you know,
that's maybe a topic for next week'sshow. Is like the five stories were
interesting. Interested to see how theyplay out in the second half of the
year. It's going to be interesting. Michigan goals, what the heck?
The heck two of them this week. Same Zegres's Michigan goal was the sickest
(33:45):
Michigan I have ever seen. Howhe did that in such a fast motion
and made that look the easiest moveon the planet, Like everybody in the
NHL should be able to do that. That's how easy. He made it
look it is. Did you seethe interview before the game? The reporter
goes, Hey, what do youthink about trying to Michigan. I was
like, oh, I'll see whathappens the first period, Like are you
(34:07):
kidding me? Like he is thatspecial he's and like, yeah, he
has four points in fifteen games orwhatever it is. But he man.
They need to get him going becausehe is. He is fun to watch.
He's one of the most exciting playersin the league to watch when he
is playing well, like he thatthat move brings me off out of your
(34:28):
seat if you're watching the game, like, are you shitting me? Like
I had to rewind the thing tolike to watch in slow mall because I'm
like, that's incredible, Like hemade that look too easy? But guards
was, it was okay. Biddingtonposted a little funny thing on his Instagram,
how to stop the Michigan little kidslashing the other kid coming around the
post. Thought that was pretty funny. But yeah, I think you're talking
(34:52):
the guys. Over the years,Well, you might start seeing guys getting
two handed around coming around the post, for sure, but I don't know,
we'll see it hasn't happened. Yetall it's all it's gonna take.
All it's gonna take is the theblade to go on the goaltender's eye,
and oh that would be war,be chaos. Yeah, you're right,
(35:15):
You're right, it was going on. Can you repeat that? What did
you just say? What did youjust say? Can you repeat that?
Told you you were right about thesame time as I've told my wife that
time. You might want to rephraseyour comments. You better hope your wife
does less of the pod. Ohyou're you're in the doghouse. I'm a
(35:37):
Texter thirty six minutes listen to thepot. I think actually it's I've probably
told you you were right about asmany times as because my wife has told
me I'm right that. Yeah, yeah, but I'm as right as many
times as you believe in Jonathan youber, I was gonna have a bounce back
here. I don't know what tobelieve there anymore. I don't know what
(35:59):
to what's going on? What isgoing on with that guy? Man?
Like? You talk to me?Man like? This guy has a two
on one basically an epty net he'spassing. It's like, what's going on?
This guy forgot how to play hockeyleft his talents in Florida. Like,
I don't understand. I don't knowwhat to say. I don't know.
(36:19):
He just lost his touch. He'sgot no touch around the net.
His playmaking is offense. I don'tknow. He's got zero points in his
last sixteen games. So okay, really not much talking about there. So
all over social media this week,I see this little graph of most hated
teams, and it's a list ofwho every team and who their fan base
(36:44):
hates the most. And I thinkit's absurd most I think it's absurd.
But I'm gonna name off a fewteams and I want you to tell me
who you think their biggest rival is. No, no, no, no,
no, no. I know I'mnot going by what this raft says
at all. I want you totell me who you really truly think.
Oh, who I think their rivalis? Okay, yes, okay,
(37:06):
I'm just gonna We're not doing allthe teams. I'm just gonna do aw
Okay, okayay, who do youthink deep down the Boston Bruins biggest rival
is Montreal Canadians. I would agree, I would agree. So who do
you think the Buffalo Sabers is whodo I think or who? Oh,
who do I think? I thinkit's the Leafs because of how it's only
(37:31):
a twenty minute drive or thirty minutedrive. I think that's a big rivalry,
and I think I think it wouldbe unbelievable, unbelievable for the league
if they somehow played each other theplayoffs. I think I'd be off the
charts. It wasn't it wasn't.It was like in two thousand and six,
I believe when they lasted that couldhave been six. No, they
(37:52):
didn't make they didn't make the playoffs, and they didn't make the playoffs until
four. Yeah, maybe maybe itwas early two thousands. Maybe. Uh,
Calgary Flames, Oilers, Dallas Stars, Turkey One, they've had a
lot of I would say the Avalanche. They've had a lot of battles in
(38:12):
the playoffs the last few years. You probably I'd probably agree. I'd probably
agree with that La Kings right now. Still, it's the Ducks. I
think it's the Ducks because it's literallya twenty minute, thirty minute drive.
But there is a case for Vegas. I think I could see that.
(38:38):
Yeah, yeah, that's the firstpoint. So Shitsburgh, Pittsburgh Washington Capitals.
Gotta be all those years they playedall those it's either it's either Washington
or it's either it's either Philly orit's Philly. It's Philly or Pittsburgh because
(38:58):
when you play a team so manytimes in a row in the playoffs.
They played each other like four tosix years in the playoffs, right,
and Pittsburgh knocked Washington out in thesecond round every single year. And remember
when they finally got past them, finally slayed the dragon or defeated the demons,
they went on to win the StanleyCup. That builds so much hate
(39:20):
and hate and hate. I justthink that Philly and Washington haven't really had
those moments like Pittsburgh and Washington halflast one. Vancouver Canucks, Well,
I hope I in the future.I hope at Seattle right now. For
a while, for a while,it was Chicago. For a while,
(39:44):
it was Chicago because they played eachother in the playoffs every damn year.
But it would probably be Calgary. It would probably be Calgary. That's what
I was thinking. That's what Iwas thinking. Vancouver hates Vancouver, so
the dummies, dumb, and Vancouverhate their own fans. Shocker. Time
(40:05):
for three questions. It's time forthree questions. Question number one, Blake,
you're firing it at me this week. I'm back at you next week.
What player has been the most disappointing? Good? More bad? Don't
(40:28):
say here because that's an easy answer. How do you? How can you
be disappointingly good? No, I'msaying like, no, like you know
what I mean. You know whatI meant. Disappointedly bad? No?
No, most sorry, most likemost like surprising player like good or bad?
Like I can't believe. I can'tbelieve he's doing this bad, like
(40:51):
holy shit, Like this guy's unreal. Uh yeah, you want going to
tell you my answer? Why isMatthew? Could Chuck is struggling as much
as he is? Yeah, heput points up. I think he does
a lot of other things. I'msurprised that I don't know I this year,
(41:15):
there's not a ton of big I'msurprised that brock Baster is doing what
he's doing. I hate to keepbringing up the Canucks in this episode,
but I am that's a that's alegitimate one. Those were probably my good
and the bad. You know he'sbeen really disappointing, is Timo Meyer?
Really disappointing first year of an eightyear deal. I'm gonna tell you something.
(41:40):
I think money does weird things topeople. Yeah, And I think
long term contracts and the pressure ofthat long term with money those funny things
to people, and I feel badfor them. But right, I think
it also should be a lesson tothat. We live in a world where
(42:00):
and I know Jonathan Eberdo had noI had no choice. I mean when
you got a choice of signing Calgary. But like, the grass isn't always
greener, right, We talked aboutthis already. Look at look at Goodrow,
Right, it isn't greener. Right. What player do you think is
(42:20):
the top trade chip? And doyou think a team jumps quickly to acquire
a big time player before the tradedeadline like before everybody else? I think
the biggest guy right now is probablyElias Lindholm. Yeah, just because I
think center depth is critical for playoffsuccess. Do I think it'll be quick?
(42:40):
No, I don't. I thinkeverything's gonna get pushed right up to
the deadline this year simply because ofthe cap is so tight for everybody,
right, I think the two teamsfor the market for him are Colorado and
Boston. I think I would agree. I would agree, but there's probably
a secret one we don't know.I think, so, Yeah, who
(43:04):
do you think that could be?H I'm pretty sure the Rangers wouldn't mind
him Mezard third line. They can'tthey can't afford him, They can't afford
him, retain salary, get morepicks. I don't know. Shit's gonna
happen? Man, what about whatabout a team? What about a team
like Detroit? Do you ever thinkabout something like that? Well? The
(43:29):
good they got some good young pieces, though maybe maybe that gets them into
the playoffs. I don't know.Okay, hypothetical question here because this will
never happen. Hypothetical question, Kay, at best and best best of seven
series between the US and Canada? What is the series and who wins best
(43:53):
on best best of seven series?I think it would be surprisingly closer than
most people think. I do thinkthe US holds an advantage in goaltending,
and I think in seven game seriesgoaltending is key. I think Canada would
probably win it in six. Iyou want to you want to hear my
(44:15):
answer? The United States wins infive and I don't even think it would
be close. I would have tobe crosser. And you think, you
look, all you gotta do,all you gotta do is look at the
goaltending us. You got Hella BuckThatcher, Demko Attinger, who is Canada
(44:38):
got a thirty eight year old MikeAndre Flurry, Jordan Benington, Carter Hart,
Tristan Tristan Jari. Really against thosethree? Why is struggling? What
is going on with Canada goalie? That's it. We could do a whole
topic on that because it grows. But that man for a decade, the
(45:04):
WHL and those other leagues even maderules to keep more Canadians in positions I
know. And it's like, right, like growing up you had you had
Broader, Patrick waw Luongo Flurry orcarry Price, Eddie Eddie Bellfo that's another
guy. But I'm just I'm justsaying like in my generation you had all
(45:27):
these goalies come and come and come, and it's like where where did they?
Where did why? Why did westop developing? Like what happened?
I don't know, it's I thinkit's I think it's something I don't know.
I don't have an answer for that. I don't think. I just
I just don't know, like Canada. When you think of Canada, you
the first thing you think about isgoaltending. That's the first thing. It's
(45:47):
like, oh, they're set.Olympics twenty ten, twenty sorry, two
thousand and twenty six, twenty ten, twenty fourteen, what's kind of doing?
Net All? They're set. GotKerry Price, you got longer,
you got broader, they're set.Now it's like only three though, I
mean they didn't beyond those three. They didn't have much no, but they
were set for a long time.Now it's like, I don't know,
(46:13):
you know what I mean, It'sweird, it be I think it'd be
exciting to watch. I hope theyhave a World Cup of Hockey eventually,
and I hope they have Russia inthe damn tournament. That would be brutal.
But like Crosby's getting, Crosby's gettingto the age where he needs to
play a best on best with aguy like McDavid and McKinnon. All these
(46:34):
guys need to play with each other. Be awesome. What you want to
grow the game? You have abest on best? What are we doing?
What are we doing the game? What are we doing now? But
the World the World Cup of Hockey. The World Cup of Hockey in twenty
sixteen was so successful, Why whyare we waiting seven years to have it?
(46:58):
Why not have it every two threeyears? Which so exciting. Team
North America was unbelievable to watch. But you remember, money is a different
thing now, man, and money'skilling sports. Man. If you,
if you, if you told anyplayer, hey, instead of playing seven
training camp games or seven preseason games, we're gonna have, We're gonna have
(47:22):
a World Cup of Hockey. Noteverybody's gonna get to play, unfortunately,
but I think players would sign offon that the opposed to playing seven down
preseason games. I'm gonna I'm gonnatell you something though, until we get
Russia back, I know, Iget it, I get it, I
get this is good. You gota listener question? I do from the
(47:43):
coolest name we've ever had on thelistener question, Mercedes Miller. How do
you like that question? How doyou like that name? Double them?
I want you to tell me yourall time favorite player without telling me their
name. With telling me their name, oh man, without like I gotta
(48:05):
tell like a joke or a story, how'd a joke? No, I'll
do it for mine I'll do itfor mine. Okay, Oh, yours
is yours is double overtime playoffs. No, I'm just gonna one of the
smallest players to play in that eraof hockey. Yeah yeah, I mean
I could go on with drug addict, WHL superstar. I could go on
(48:32):
for a lot of the Stanley Cupchampion in his rookie year. I don't,
I don't. I have so many. Man, Well, your favorite
player. We all know who yourfavorite player is. So do you want
me to do it for you methim in two thousand and nine. Well,
(48:52):
that doesn't help any Hall of Famegoaltender, two time Olympic gold medal
list, first ballot, Hall ofFamer, fourth all time and wins.
He's a top five goalie all time. No, my one goal not a
(49:13):
top five. That's question. That'sa cool question though. So did you
see the new thing out that theAGL has called the flow Finder? You
can pick your face in there andput players hockey their hairs on your head.
Oh you did, Brock Bessers orwhat? Well, I didn't do
(49:36):
it. I don't know. I'mnot. I just thought it was hilarious,
Like, jeez, what else arewe doing in the Angel office.
You need to come up with afinder. All right, I'm getting EPISO
