Christmas is coming gone, and itis back to hockey action. We're here
at the Debate Hockey podcast for anap. So we haven't had hockey for
three days now. I don't knowwhy, Blake, but it seems like

My mom's side all got together.Every other year we do that,
So spent a couple of days upin Regina, had to work, had
to come back Christmas night because Ihad to work this morning at at six

got a few hours of sleep andthen uh yeah, back to work.

I'm I'm off, I'm off myscooter and uh foots heeling up nice.
So it's it's getting a little betterpost surgery, so up moving around.
Uh now, I just gotta workon kind of strengthening my leg because it's
pretty weak because I've been having beenon it for a while. Yeah,

good Christmas, and I'm glad yourfamily. What did you do for Christmas?

I spent time at my parents' houseand my in laws for uh yesterday
for a while, but uh yeah, I had a real good time at
my parents' house and the family hadfun. Kids, Uh all had a
good time, and I was nicetoo. We just always Florida. So
how was your holiday at Florida?It was good. The weather was junk,
but we made the best of itand we had a good time each

and every day. And that wasa good long week. And then we
got back and right into the Christmasso it's been go go go, and
today was a rest and recoop dayand back to normal tomorrow. Did did
you do anything like cool in Florida? Did you go to any like games?
Any three and events? We wentkayaking one day with these like clear

kayaks, and we had dolphins abouta foot and a half from us in
the water. So that was prettycool, nice, nice, pretty cool,
pretty cool. It did a lotof fun things. It was a
little chilly, little rainy there,but I made the best of it,
had a good time. I wasfun taking family vacations. But good to
get back, good to get backin the routine and it'd be good.

So I went in losing or winning. I didn't see Edmonton losing that game.
I thought they were going to comeback. I just my gut told

World Juniors, and you get olderand you just you just lose a little
interest. I guess. So thatpart kind of sucks because Christmas was it
is one of my favorite holidays.But it's just I don't know. Every

know, It's just maybe I'm notthe only one that's like that, but

Today I turned on the World Juniorsand I was just like, I'm

I honestly, I don't think Canadais gonna be in the gold medal

why? I think that we allkind of feel like it. We're just

not feeling it. It's not thesame not having Russia. Well yeah,
exactly, exactly, that's one hundredpercent true. Like like you remember that
you remember that game where Canada wasdown six to one in the semifinals to
Russia with like ten minutes left inthe third. They always made that comeback,
like that's one of my favorite memoriesfrom the World Juniors. And it's

to have Finland, Sweden, Canada, US and Russia. If though,

All right, Like, this ismy Christmas gift to you. It's

not often your team, it's relevantin a positive way, and now they're
the headline of the show today.Man, it is this is a Christmas
miracle in Vancouver. It is thisis the first time, this is the
first time since we've been doing thisshow that Vancouver has been actually good.

Now the number one team in theNational Hockey League as we went to Christmas
break, I don't know, prettyimpressive forty nine points in thirty five games.
Now they don't have the highest winpercentage, the Arrangers hold that,
but it's still pretty damn impressive.This team, who many had pegged as
a marginal playoff team, has foundthe success that they've had, and even

more so, has somewhat I mean, yes, we're only not quite a
halfway through. We're getting close tothe half wim mark, but they've they've
held it pretty solid with consistency wise, it's stayed pretty solid. Yeah yeah,
I mean, you know, thestat that jumps out at the page

to me when I think about theirstart and is when they're leading after forty
minutes, they are twenty No,they're twenty o. You remember last year
the first ten games where they hadeight multi goal leads and they were zero
to eight after forty They blew allthose leads at the start. They easily

this year, they keep the footon the gas. They play good
defensively, they they are protecting leads, and it's it's just night and day
the structure and the defensive defensive sideof it, and it's it's honestly,

Patrick Alvin and Jim Brutherford I've donewith this defense in the last eleven twelve

vastly improved, and I will givethem all the credit, but let's see

boy, you shouldn't say Edmonton becauseEdmonton's a really good hockey team that's gonna
I think, in my mind makethe playoffs this year. But I think
this team is what they've done isastonishing. I mean, they're getting a
good goaltending. Demko's tied for thelead league lead and shut ups with three.
He's in the top ten and bowlssay percentage in goals against average,

and most importantly, he stays healthy. He's healthy. That angle you hit
the nail on the head. That'swhat it was going to come down to.
Dempco played twenty three games last year. If like I said, if
I said this at the start ofthe year, I said, if you
get fifty to fifty five games fromthatcher Dempko, the Canucks should be there
at the end. They should bein a playoffs spot. At Demco,

it plays fifty to fifty five games, and what they've gotten, what they've
gotten from Casey to Smith, it'sunbelievable. He's got a nine to two
four save. I think he's sevenand two. He just come in.
He's come in and stabilized a Canucksposition that they haven't had stabilized in four

years. They've had to ride Demcointo the ground because they didn't have a
competent backup that can come in andpush him. And they went out and
prioritize that and got a Goaliad thatcan push them. I really thought they
did when you did too, whenthey had Halac, I thought that was
a good one. I thought thatwas a good pickup. I thought he
was going to be that backup forVancouver. Yeah, I I did too.

rest Dempko a few more if ifyou have to save him for some games

that right. And I'm not sayinglike I'm not saying like Zadorov is like
a huge reason why they've had allthe success, but their third nine and
went straight and for him, likehis his presence, his that that pairing

has been really good. I wasvery skeptical, but now you got put
together in Calgary and they blown meaway. They I told you, Myers
somehow stabilized Myers. Tyler Myers hasthe same amount of points as Jonathan Huberto.

I don't know. I don't know. Their first in Golden Frenchial, their
first and goals for per game,their first and goals against per game.
They have a top five power play. They have one of the most exciting
third lines in the NHL. Thatthat Joshua Garland Blueger line is so fun
to watch like they are, they'reon a tear right now. I'm not

saying it's gonna last forever, butit's not. They're getting a lot of
depth scoring and when Miller and Petersonand Hughes take a night off, that
line has been stepping up in abig way. So I'm not saying they're
gonna I'm not what's on Miller Pettersonand he was their top three in points
this year. Miller has third withforty eight, Hughes his eighth forty four,

and Peterson is nineth with forty three, and then you have brockcasts second
and goals with twenty four. Yeah, that's many a huge balance back.
But I will tell you this.I will tell you this, They're not
gonna sustain this the whole year.Everybody knows that. No, they won't.
But there there are still very,very formidable. But they they haven't

had a lot of injuries, whichalso it's Susie, Susie that's a big
loss. But he's on his wayback. He's on his way back,
but Noah, Juleison stepped up andplayed some big minutes too. Like that's
it's the next man up with thisteam. And that's pocket style, right,
which you haven't had an injury toPatterson or Miller or one of the

key cogs, you know, oror most importantly, like we touched on
a little bit ago, you know, look at the health of Demko and
look at what that just that oneone thing has changed this team. And
well, it's just they've just madeit easier to play net for him.
They just defend way harder. Well, is finally an issue? Right,

sat JT. Miller for God's sakes, like he it's you're not gonna play
my way, Okay, you're gonnabench, You're gonna sit. I mean,

country club vibe out of there,Like I feel like it was like a
a pretty loose, non non accountablegroup and you get new management in there,

you get you get synergy, synergyfrom the top all the way down,
like you got they brought in theowner, brought into coach before you
hired a president of the GM,Like it was backwards from the start last
year and it was full of drama. And now the coaches, the management
has their coach and and playing theway they want to play. And it's

showing like I'm not saying they're gonnasustain first in the league, but there's
no reason why they can't sustain beinga top five team. Like I got
that they've shown me this. Thisisn't just a ten games sample size.
We're approaching half a season here.Like they've shown that they can play the
same way over and over and overand over. There there's a lot of

repeatability to their game. And Idon't know, I'm out of loss for
words because it's just so fun towatch right now. They're a fun They're
a fun hockey team you watch.Do I think now this no, But
you know what, I would evenworry about where they sit in the league.
I think it's just so important tobe, you know, in the
Pacific Division. I think it's soimportant to be you know in that well,

advantage in the first round, right, you want to either get first or

has played like a league low thirtygames, but they're they seem to be
