It is time for the Debate HockeyPodcast Almost the show Brad Groups join alongside
my coochos Blake Friar an hour ofNHL hockey talk. And it's been it's
been a busy, busy week.Yesterday, hockey game in Canada, one
of my favorite days of the year. Some good matchups, some I don't
even know, weird weird games ofWinnipeg gets by Ottawa two to one in

(00:42):
overtime, Vancouver beats Toronto six four, and Montreal gets beat by Boston nine
to four. And then Edmonton getsby Calgary three to one. Thirteen straight
for the Oilers. They are definitelydefinitely rolling. Yeah, I know,
that's that's one of my favorite daysof the year too. Hockey all day,

(01:02):
all seven teams in action, andthen and then you mix it in
with uh with playoff football. Imean that sets that sets for a pretty
pretty busy weekend. There was good, good matchups in the NFL. Another
exciting one with the Chiefs and Billstoday. Wish the Bills would have came
out on top, but uh,that's tough. Oh well, it is

(01:23):
what it is. But yeah,it was a good weekend of sports for
sure. Yeah, definitely a goodone. You know, you're a play
by play guy. And we've talkedabout Jack Edwards in Boston many many times.
What's he? What's going on?Jack? Jack? Michaels is right
there with him, I think Iknow. But is he is Jack Edwards

(01:45):
having like medical issues or something?Have you heard him on the cars lately?
I took a video. I tooka video. It took him,
like I should you not, likeforty five seconds to get his point across.
And I'm like, like he waslike talking in slow emotion. I'm
like, listen, I'm like,is this guy okay? Like I'm not,

(02:08):
I don't know. I I uh. I have respect for his passion
for the Bruins, but Homer,he goes way too far, way too
far, way too far, ridiculous. But Michael's is he's creeping up there
with the oilers. It's he isgetting a little annoying to listen. I

(02:30):
used to like him. I usedto like him a lot when he came
up and he first started with theoilers and I was like, as the
years have gone on, I'm like, oh, like, I don't know,
man, he started No, Iwouldn't say it's unprofessional. He's just
you can be a homer. He'sa little too biased for me. And
I get he's an he's the oilersguy. That's fine, it's not like

(02:53):
yes, but your job is tostill tell the story truthfully, right,
and and that's I think that's whereI think Louis de Brest works really well
for him because he plays Devil's advocatea lot, but he kind of he
kind of evens it a little bit. But yeah, what did you think
of the Terry Ryan PR stunt? Is that what it is? It's it's

(03:19):
totally I don't know, like hisreasoning of doing it was it made sense.
He wanted his from him, hewanted he wanted his daughter to see
him play a professional game, whichwhich is cool. Why is that?
Why are the new Phoneland Growlers?Like how crappy is your organization when you're
calling a forty seven year old toget people to come watch your games?

(03:44):
I know it looks like a PRstunt for sure, Like I don't know,
Yeah, I'm not sure. Andthen he and then he fights,
He fights, He got a coupleof good punches in there. He gotta
lick it a little bit, butuh, he's not a bad hockey player.
I mean, I'm not faulting him. Listen what I do to I
mean, did you know that hewas a fourth overall pick? Yeah?

(04:04):
I didn't know. Sixth, yes, yesterday. Let's let's let's make sure
we're right on that he was notbecause Damon Langkaw was taking all right.
Sorry, sorry, he's an eighthoverall pick. I was gonna say eighth

(04:25):
overall that I didn't realize that.Like he tore up the Western League with
Tri City. He just he justnever ever ever panned out because he was
well, he's kind of like congames. He played eight games, kind
of like Connor Brown, right,Connor Brown or whatnot? Who's the guy

(04:46):
playing on McDavid's line, Connor? That's that's Connor Brown. Yeah, yeah,
Connor Brown up in juniors right now, he's in the NHL and he
camp buy a goal? Hold on? What? Hold on? What?
What am I holding on for?Blake? What? What are we holding

(05:06):
on for? Blake? Locking thisup? You're looking this up? Hang
on? Okay, Connor Brown hadthree twenty goal seasons in the NHL.
It's not like this guy just forgothow to score. Well. He can't
score right now. But he hasn'tscored in his last thirty nine games.
I'm that's what I'm That's what I'msaying. But but juniors, right,

(05:30):
Oh, yeah, no, hewas very good. List off one hundred
guys that were tore up the WHLand didn't do dinky ship and he played
no way he played in the OHL. But yeah, but I'm saying he
was. Uh, he's a prettysuccessful player for the least and his first
couple years in Toronto. Alright, sorry, Ottawa. So Monday night,

(05:51):
Vancouver's plane gets stuck in the mudat the airport. How does that happen?
How's an airplane going the mud?No, it's just I don't know,
I don't know, I don't know. It wasn't It was in Buffalo,
so like it was like just shittyweather, and I know, they
got they got they got stranded,They got stranded, They got stranded in

(06:14):
Buffalo. Then they had to theyhad to bust in a snowstorm to Toronto,
fly out of Toronto to Columbus andthen play at twelve o'clock game.
That was what a Gonk show happensto every team. Something that's a little
slow excessive. What were they supposedto cancel the game for them? No?
Hey, they got a point, went five to one and one on

(06:38):
the road trip. That's what gaveme. I know, but Vancouver fans
still find a way to whine.I'm not whity. I just provided facts,
Yeah, facts that you didn't thinkit was fair. I didn't say
it was fair at all. Youhire a pilot that keeps it on the
concrete, they couldn't fly out. What are you talking about when he got

(06:58):
stuck in the mud. I thinkthat's made up. Honestly, I don't
okay, I don't know if that'strue or not. I don't you you
you would be someone, You wouldbe somebody to fall for a troll account
though Global News Canada is who reportedYeah, probably fake with the whole every
news in canada's fake news because thegovernment did you? Did you happen to

(07:20):
hear Strickland's comments UFC fighter No,I don't want you to, okay.
Uh, you'll get a kick ofthis though. After the pot I will
send you the clip, but Iwant to get your thoughts on it.
Say it right now, huh?Say no, I can't. I can't.
There's too many like f bombs andgoing off on Trudeau and Biden.

(07:42):
It's you'll like it, You'll you'llget a kick of it. It's Bundy
tear a country down and carry yourcountry down. And yeah, all right,
all right, lot's talking on theshow today. We got Patrick Waugh
head coach of the Islanders. Nowwe're gonna do a little trade deadline talk,
not really deadline talk, but whosays no scenarios, We'll go around

(08:03):
the league. Martin on waivers againclaimed Pintal re signs Ruther for extended kles
out TV dilemma and call there issome goofy stuff going on in the BHL
right now. Saturday morning, itis announced that Patrick Waugh is the new

(08:28):
head coach of the Islanders and LaneLambert is fired and gone, yeah go
Blake. I don't have I don'thave. I don't have much to say
on this. Alls I'll say isuh. I think he was the right
coach, wrong time for Colorado.I don't think they I don't think they

(08:52):
had a team that was I don'tthink they have had a team in place
or players in place for him tocoaches the way he wants to coach.
They were they were they were arebuilding team. It was Uh, it
was a lose lose situation for anyany coach that went into that that organization
at that time. It was adisaster. He last two years coach at

(09:16):
the wrong time too. Who wasLane Lamber at the right coach? Coach
at the wrong time too. II even said that he shouldn't even been
hired in the first place. Whoshould have been You could have hired anybody
with the experience they need, anythey needed an experience, Well, then
hockey guy Patrick Wall. This guygot a live experience. He played in

(09:39):
the league twenty years, He's coachedin the NHL, He's He's been a
very successful coach in the Q.He's one of Memorial Cup come on,
Bliss Litler, Kevin Constantine, Let'sname off a whole bunch of guys at
one in the Okay, I'm justsaying he deserved a second opportunity, and
they weren't the only team offering him. Saint Louis was in after him.
There's a lot of teams not tooffer him. They talk, they interviewed,

(10:01):
and they talked to him. Okay, but I'm just saying the Islanders
weren't the only guy after Patrick Wah. Okay, it took him a long
time to get rehired. It did, for sure. But you can't tell
me he doesn't deserve it doesn't deservea job. You know. I'm not
saying he's a bad coach because Idon't know yet. I haven't seen him
coach law enough to get even fredhe coached a bad Colorado team. That's

(10:22):
pretty unfair to judge a guy fortwo years there. But everybody, but
you're sitting here telling me what agreat junior coach is and I'm sorry.
Only I really remember of his juniorcoaching career is controversy. Why because of
his kids, fighting and stuff andsome of the things he did. That's
what stands out when you say PatrickWall coaching, I think, oh,

(10:45):
okay, he's a he's a fieryI think he's I think that market's gonna
love Patrick Wah. That that marketis. That market and Patrick Waugh.
They they're both stubborn, they're bothpassionate there, they both love the game.
It's I think it's a good Ithink it's gonna be a good fit.
I think it's gonna be a goodfit. There do you think every

(11:07):
trade in it. Oh, that'sthat's not true. That last time Vancouver
signed somebody or anybody else, You'relike, you know, that's not good.
And uh, Patrick Waugh is uh. I want to know, come
from behind victory over the Dallas Stars, the same Stars that went down twenty
to zero in shots to Philly yesterdayzero. I know what's going on,

(11:31):
what is going on in Dallas.I don't know that that's like the oh
in the world here, but Iknow, I honestly I wish him well
because I like the Islanders. I'vealways kind of been a secret Islanders fan.
I just questioned, Well, yougot lou Lamarillo, who's like the
most rigid, rigid stickler for littlethings in the world, and then you

(11:52):
put in a guy that's, uh, a fiery, self centered guy like
Patrick Waugh. I don't know.Oh, I don't know how that mixes.
Well. I mean, here's thething about the Islanders. Here's the
thing about the Islanders. Okay, you got a lot of good pieces on
that team. You got Barzel, you got anders Lee, you got Pajoh,

(12:15):
you got Horvat, you got NoahDobson, who's really molding himself to
be into the top ten for defenseman. You got Sorocan, who's the top
five goal in the NHL. Yougot Barlamo, who's a good backup to
push Sorocan. You got a lotof good pieces in there, and now
it's about Now it's about finding theright coach that can get the most out
of that team and take them tothat next level. Because not not too

(12:37):
long ago, we were talking aboutthe Islanders being in back to back conference
finals. Not and it's a lotof that those teams that went to the
conference finals that were one went awayfrom the cup or they're still on that
team like this is still a goodcore and and the window is still there
for them to win. It's aboutfinding the right guy to point him in
the right direction. So we'll seewhat happens. Yeah, I agree.

(13:00):
I think there's definitely the pieces inNew York too on the Island to put
together a solid hockey team. Ithink they've been an adequate hockey team for
the last few years. I justlooked at it like Doug Waite let him
kind of play offensively, right, like he kind of let him go play
offense. And then and then thelast couple of coaches they've been defense first,

(13:22):
this, this, this, andlike it kind of held back Barzel's
game. And I think Patrick Wallwas kind of like a kind of like
a hybrid. He's kind of likemore of a hybrid style. We will
see because I'm just saying though, without good defense, you don't win.
I listened to and that's what hesaid in his press corms. He said
defense win championships. That was thefirst tea. So it does. So

(13:43):
I mean, I don't look athim as being like a big, flying
offensive coach, but I guess we'llsee what we'll see. Yeah, because
he has no experience because in Coloradowe couldn't really tell because he didn't have
any talent, right, Yeah,So we really don't don't know where he's
gonna go with this. We area little over a month away from NHL

(14:05):
trade deadline, and in the lastcouple of weeks we've had more and more
talk kind of sparkling up about hey, this guy gets moved here, this
guy gets moved here. And youread all these trade rumors and you shake
your head and you laugh at mostof them, and I do, but
but you know what, I shakemy head and I laugh at these trade
rumors, but I read them andI love it. Right. Oh dude,

(14:28):
hey, listen. I the amountof time that I spend on cap
Friendly and go through the armchair GMtrades is actually, I'm too embarrassed to
admit how long I'm on that side. But it's ridiculous. But it's fun,
though, isn't it. Like it'slike there's some absolutely ridiculous trades and
then you read and then you lookat them and you're like, that's actually
a really smart idea. Yeah,So we Blake and I both came up

(14:52):
with three different trades. We're gonnakind of cruise from quickly because we got
a lot of other things to talkabout and we want to kind of keep
the show at forty five minutes. But we've got three trades. I got
three, I think Blake has three. Will read them off and then we'll
say who says no, and uh, you said you go through your three
of the will just make it asquick as possible. You want to do

(15:13):
one and I'll do one and youdo one. I'll do one. Sure,
Okay, who's going first? Youcan go first. Winnipeg Trades Billy
Aheno Lot and a twenty twenty foursecond round pick that they received from Montreal
to Montreal for Sean Monaghan with fiftyretained. I think both teams would do

(15:37):
that. I I kind of havea similar trade. I didn't go down
the middle for them. I wenton the wing. I have what they
needed down the middle. They needdown the middle. That's debate or else
you do? Who else need todo? Is it debate? I don't
think they needed needed a center. It well, it depends how long Shafeley's

(15:58):
out. Now, Schifley is along term No, he's probably not going
to be ian. I'm talking withShiffley in. No, with Scheifflee in.
You got Schiflee, you got Shiflee, you got Gabe Velardi, you
got Lowry down the middle. Youdon't need our center. Lowery hasn't been
playing center though Lowry is a he'syour third line center. Okay. I

(16:19):
think they need more of a winger. I have them trading Logan Stanley at
twenty twenty four second and at twentytwenty five second to New Jersey for Tyler
to Foley. Why would why wouldthey do? Who says no to that?
Winnipeg says no. Winnipeg is nottaking to Foley's contract. My god,

(16:41):
why it's only for two more years. Yeah, and it's overpriced and
not really he's making when the guy'sa thirty goal scorer, so wah,
he's slow. So why would whywhy would New Jersey do that? Because
there are there aren't they trying towin a Stanley Cup? Yeah, but
you can still you can still becompetitive, but at a six foot seven

(17:03):
defenseman and at a couple of picksand still be I don't think losing to
Folly would would hurt them that much. They can you can sell a little
bit and still be competitive. Ithink I think that's an opportunity to take
out a nice prospect and a coupleof picks promise that trade doesn't happen.
I'm not listen, we could namesix trades. They all might not happen.

(17:25):
I'm just saying, like, Ithink that could happen. I would
bet that none of our has happened. Probably just saying. I'm just saying,
I think Winnipeg with the Foley isa good fit. Next one,
I've got Anaheim trading Trevor Ziegris anda third round pick in twenty twenty four
to Detroit for Joseph's Volno A firstin twenty twenty four and a prospect I

(17:52):
wrote down Vero, a defenseman whowas a third rounder. I got a
mid level prospect. Hmmmm. Anaheim'sgot a yah, a lot of centered
depth. I I don't know.I think there. I think Anaheim might
say, No, I don't know, it'd be tough to you're getting more

(18:17):
than I don't think you're getting morethan that for for Zere. Do you
it'd be tough to give up bunZegres at twenty one years old, though
I know, but I feel likeit's gonna happen, don't you. I
don't know how you would do that, But I feel like there's you know,
there's smoke, there's fire, andall I've heard lately is Zegres is
gone and there's something going on.And well when they didn't go long term

(18:37):
with the that's a that's so thatwas a little alarming. Yes, So
I don't know, I mean,do I would I do it? If
I was Anaheim? No, Iwouldn't want to get rid of Zegres.
But if he wants out, hewants out. And you know, there's
a ton of players that go inand say I want out. That don't
make a public right right, well, and and that happened with Connor Garland
this year like they he said that, oh he requested to trade. He

(19:00):
file out said I didn't request thetrade, So I mean that that couldn't
happen too, right, So absolutely, Um, this one's uh, this
one's a son's a big one,buddy, all right. Elias Lindholm and
Chris tannev half retained to the VancouverCanucks for Andre Kuzmenko. No, listen,

(19:22):
I'm not done. Listen Jonathan LEKERMACKIwho absolutely tore up the World Juniors
bestily Pod Colson at twenty twenty fourfirst and at twenty twenty five second.
No, that's a that's all that. That's a good package though that is
not for both of them though.First of all, I would trade one

(19:45):
of them to Vancouver. Maybe I'mnot trading both to Vancouver. That's a
big package though for Calgary, that'sa good package. I don't want Kuzmenko,
and I'm not taking his salary either. You can flip Kuzmenko, not
I can't flip him in his salaryhe has now, well he's in there
for the money. He's in thereto make the money work, I could.

(20:06):
Would you rather have Tyler Myers then? For the money? You will?
You wait a minute. You donot want to get rid of Tyler
Myers for a Stanley Cup run?You don't. You don't. He's not
a great defenseman, but he's gonnabe great. What if they get what
if they get Chris Taddi to replacehis spot? Because I think you'd probably
you would have seven l defenseman. You're gonna dress seven d every night?

(20:27):
You need eight or nine for theplayoffs? Sure? But you do?
Do you think Tyler Myers is gonnabe okay with being a healthy scratch?
Does it matter? Are you're resigninghim? Probably not? So who cares?
All? Right? Are you makingfriends or winning stal? How?
How important is Tyler Myers to theCanucks? Now? Eh? I know?

(20:52):
He he is depth? Right? The problem with Tyler Myers is that
Vancouver thought he was a two defensemanwhen he was six defenseman. Right,
he's greate five six defense mean he'sgreat, not for not for six mil
though. That was just a badsigning and they hit him. It was
no different than for years. Imean every team has it. You you
plug guys in in wrong positions andyou wonder why it doesn't work. Well,

(21:15):
Yeah, because the third pair guyhe was playing in the top pair
made it in Trono and Vancouver.Yes, so now he's solidified in the
third pairs, dwarf. He's beenreally good, perfectly, he's perfect in
that situation. Right, it's situations. Yeah, you want my Vancouver trade?
Sure? How many have you giventoo? And I've given too?

(21:37):
Yeah? This is your second, this is your second, that's your third.
Okay, Vancouver trades Kuzmenko fifty retainedto Our and a fourth round pick
in twenty twenty four and a fifthround pick in twenty twenty five to Buffalo

(21:59):
for Casey Middlestead. Really, youthink he'll cost that less? You don't
think he'll cost that less to gethim? Well, well they would,
Yeah, I think you'd get himat that if you if you retained half
of Kauz Minko. But I don'tknow if they can do that. I
think it would cost at least afirst in there to get him. I

(22:21):
don't think so he did you he'sproducing this year, Blake, do not.
He's got thirty nine point five games. Do not forget not one first
place. He's well, he's gotto get paid this summer too, that
you gotta be care for. That'swhat I'm saying. He's a UFA,
so is he? No? No, I don't I don't think he's a
UFA. I think he is.No, he's he's got to be.

(22:44):
He's an Ye, he's twenty four. You got to pay him extra.
But I'm just saying, like you'renot gonna for you keep saying first,
not one first got traded last year. Yeah, that is fair, but
there wasn't that many. There wasn'tthat much on them market though. There
wasn't Elias Lindholm, Chris Tannev outthere to trade, you know what I
mean? Like who is the Idon't even who is the big fish?

(23:08):
It was it was Patrick Kane,it was Tarasenko, Yeah it was and
they were all, yeah, theydidn't get first, so like those guys
are those guys are old? Kanewas hurt. I don't know, like
there wasn't like lind Holme is gonnaget a first, like you're gonna get
a first for Lyndholm. I don'tknow. I don't know like that that's

(23:29):
interesting to me because I could usea center, but I don't know,
I don't know how much time,Like what would his next contract look like?
You gotta remember, you gotta remember, you gotta remember. You gotta
pay Patterson Heronic You may not youmay not get to use them for the
next contract. You may let himwalk. You might have to. You
might not have the money to.Or you could flip them after the after
our playoff run. You could dothat. But the word around Vancouver is

(23:51):
we're going for it this year, right, guy will help you get there?
Right? Yeah, you're getting anyways. Yeah, they got to find
a way. They got to finda way to reallocate his money somewhere to
trade, Like I think that's Ithink that's priority number one on that cap.
We'll talk a little bit more aVancouver when we talk about the Fredill
My last trade, My last trade, Uh, it's a it's a outside

(24:15):
the box trade. I think allof ours were outside the box, weren't
they. Florida trades Spencer Knight toCarolina for Jack Drury in a first round
pick. I don't think Spencer naggets your first rounder, does he?
I don't think he costs you afirst rounder. But like I think.

(24:37):
I think it's you're he's under contractfor three more years at four and a
half. I don't know. Imean, you gotta be a little weary.
I mean, he was in theplayer assistance program, like yeah,
but he's playing really good in theminers right now. Like I think he's
getting his game. You picked himto win thirty games last year. Careful
what you're seeing. I love himas a goaltender, and I'm not saying

(24:59):
Carolina wouldn't on him. I don'tknow if they have to give up first
to get them. Yeah, maybeJack Drury in a second, maybe maybe,
Like I think, I think thatwould be a good trade for both
teams, That's what I'm saying.I don't. I think it's great.
I think it'd be a smart dealfor for Carolina. But I don't know
if you'd have to give a firstto do. I really don't know.
Yeah, yeah, I don't know. It'll be interesting, but I I

(25:22):
really don't know what's gonna happen withthis. It's gonna be like there's obviously
dominoes to fall, Like, isJake Denzil actually available? Like he was
linked to the Canucks by Elliott Freeman. The other day yesterday, It's like,
is Pittsburg gonna make him available?Like what's like, like I said,
like Calgary's Calgary controls the deadline rightnow. Calgary holds the cards that

(25:47):
they have the dominoes. Once thosedominoes start falling, people teams are gonna
start going, Okay, I guesswe can go here, we can go
here. Now this is where we'regonna redirect because if Calgary goes, hey,
we're gonna lynd Holme. We're gonnatrade tannef but we're gonna trade Hanafan.
You know that opens a lot ofdoors. Here's one of the things
though, Like I love Elias Lindholme. I've always been a fan of his,

(26:08):
but like, if the numbers thatare floating around are true, right,
and he believes that, like II'd be leary giving up a whole
king's ransom to get him because Idon't know if I sure as I wouldn't
sign him at what he's asking.Well, if Vancouver got a guy like
that, that's just a pure rentalbecause they can't afford him. Yeah,

(26:32):
Like and that's where it's like,Okay, how much is how much is
too much to give up for arental, right, because now, if
you get a guy like Tanef, you know who they really realistically could sign
it resign a guy like that ifif they want, right, But everybody
in the league wants to resign tanI just think everybody the death to resign.

(26:53):
Right, I'm just saying a guyGlendholm, is he really worth the
nine nine and a half that hewants. Probably not. That's the risk
you take and and and try andgo for it for a Cup run.
That's the risk he'd he's scare togive him seven million? Yeah, I'd
probably go max seven and a halfwith him. Well, someone's gonna be

(27:15):
dumb and give him more than that. Yeah. I love the guy.
I'm not ripping on him. Imean I love the way he plays.
You know, he's He's a twohundred ft defensive center with scoring touch.
I mean those guys are hard tofind. Yeah, dude, he had
them. He had thirty goals lastyear. No, no, not last

(27:36):
year. He didn't. I don'tthink he did when he played with Goudreau
and Kachuk was his only point pointyear. I don't. I mean,
if I if I'm if I'm goingto give somebody nine mil I better be
freaking guaranteed points, right. Okay, So last year he had sixty four
points twenty two goals. A yearbefore that he had forty forty two goals

(28:00):
playing with playing with Matthew Chuck andJohnny Goodroll. Okay, So if you
if you put him with Elas Pettersonand Brock Beazer, you don't think he
would. You don't think he wouldproduce? Sure, I know you would.
I know you would. Well, man, it's gonna be interesting.
Like if he goes to Colorado andgets a chance to play with Nathan McKinnon,

(28:22):
he'll put up, but they won'tbe able to afford to resign him.
But but if you win at StanleyCup, who gives a ship?
I'm with you, what do yougive? Is he going to get a
first I most likely? Yeah?Probably, Yeah, I hope so,
I hope. So. I justlike, as a Flames fan, how
many of the guys I just named, would you say get traded? Two?

(28:47):
Yeah, Tanavan Lindholm. Okay,I think they're more. I think
I think. I mean, Ithink it's smart to sign Haffan, and
I think it's smart so too.But I just don't know if it'll happen.
But we'll see, yeah, becauseI don't know if I don't know
if Hanafan wants to be there.Right, he's an American, He's he
made it very clear last year thathe was going to resign with an American

(29:07):
team. Yeah, but then hestarted renegotiating with the Flames O this year.
I agree, I agree, butyeah, he wants he wants someone.
I think there's part of him thatwants to stay if you're going to
reopen negotiation mid season. Sure.I don't think he's ever hated his time
in Calgary, right, I don'tthink he ever has. I think he
just says, like, I'm anAmerican, I wanted to go back to
the States. I think this wholeCOVID thing was just and is there like

(29:30):
a is there a team in theNHL that is a contender that he wants,
like, say, he wants togo to a contender that he can
truly be a number one left pairdefenseman like Calgary. Oh, Hanaffon gives
a rats ass if he's a oneor three. But I don't think he

(29:51):
cares. Yeah, I really don't. I don't. Why did I can
I answer a question? Why diddefenseman? Do any of them really care
as long as they're in the toptwo pairing, because if you're in the
top two pairings, you're getting that. Yeah, does really matter? Like
if you're the only guy I knowthat cares about that? Is Nikida's the
door off? Why? Because heused to always say I number one,

(30:15):
number one pairing defenseman in Chicago.Well, no ship Nikia Chicago was horseshit.
Hey, listen, he's a thirdpair of d in Vancouver and he's
he's loving it. He's awesome. We'll see see if he's loving it.
We'll see if he re signs there. We'll see. I give him,
uh, I give him five yearsfour and a half. He ain't taken

(30:36):
four and a half. He will, he will. I'm calling it right
now. Is the door off?Sign eight? He's be four to four
and a half? You want tobet you want to have all the side
bed here, little side bed becausehe's already four and a half. He
ain't getting no six, All right, Watch, Okay, let's bet then
you get six. I'll say hegets four to four and a half.

(30:59):
What Branson it? He got fourtimes four? Yeah? He deserved two?
Right? Oh, go get onover check our sponsors out apparel,
bandits. I would fit your teamwith all kinds of great cum and under
all apparel, hats, bags, sweatshirts, hack, I mean everything you

(31:21):
can do that outfigure your team, make him look top notch for your youth
hockey season, go around the leaguehere. Uh So, Spencer Martin claimed
off waivers from Vancouver earlier in theyear, and he goes to Columbus.

(31:42):
No no, no, no,no, no no. He signed with
Columbus as a free agent in thesummer. He did, didn't he?
Yeah, he did one year deal. Okay, but now he puts put
on waivers by Columbus, which surprisedme because why would do you think?
Do you think they were threatened byMr Leakin's comments? It looks like it.

(32:04):
That's why I'm bringing this up onthe show today because last week we
talked about Mrs Leikin's in his commentsand we said Spencer Martin's out playing him.
And then all of a sudden,Spencer Martin's on waivers and he's claimed
by Carolina. I'm like, whatjust happened? Yeah, it's interesting,
it's very interesting. And Mrs Leaken'sis put together three straight good starts too,

(32:27):
So I don't know, maybe alittle lettle little lit a little fire
under him. I'm not sure, but uh yeah, I mean it's uh,
it's a fringe NHL guy with experiencefor Carolina who's dealt with a lot
of goaltending issues, so injuries andwhatnot. He'll get a chance to play
some games over there, so goodfor him. Shane Pindle re signs a

(32:51):
league minimum for one year, whichwe both expected. Yeah, do you
think a long term deal in Ottawais in the in the folks for Shane
Pinto, Well, I mean theywere in They were in quite in in
past at the start of the summer, right, so the they had to

(33:13):
have known that this was coming fromthe league, right so they that's why
I know evidently they they knew later, but not is upfront and not as
quickly as what we probably would havebeen, right right, I don't know's
it'll be interesting because they signed theysigned all those guys long term, right
and like what are they gonna do? What are they gonna do a trick?

(33:35):
When here they gotta now he sayshe wants. Is that guy ever
happy? I don't know. Imean, when he got traded there.
I'm so happy to play in Ottawa. I can't wait to play. It's
like the greatest thing in the world. Is he one of those players that
like like he's just never gonna beHe's there for five seconds they want to
leave. It's like he's like thatlittle kid who was like who was like,

(33:59):
get I want to I want totry this ride. Five seconds in
the ride they get me off here, I want to try another one.
It's like, I don't know,man, I just I don't know.
I think he's one of those guysand just you're just never gonna please him,
right He just he wants it handedto him and he wants to win,
and everybody wants to win, butonly one team wins every year,
right well, I mean it wouldbe I would be pretty tough playing playing
in autumn right now, I gotI can't that can't be a tough I

(34:21):
don't understand why it would be tough, because they have a great young nucleus,
but they just like they just Okay, you know what, I'm gonna
tell you something. I'm gonna tellyou something. Calgary was an example last
year. I think Vancouver was theexample maybe two years ago. Maybe I'm
ocular correct me here. Teams justhave years where it's like, man,

(34:42):
I just really don't know why we'rethis bad, but we are, but
but but them This year it's thesame situations. Like it's the same like
they show you for two three gamesthat they like what you're like, Oh,
this team is actually pretty good, and then they go and get lose
six nothing. So we you breakthem up? Or would you? I
think you gotta do some tinkering forsure. I think you got to get

(35:05):
a couple of defensemen in there.Well, I think what you need to
do if you build, you gota lot. You got a lot of
good pieces in Ottawa, so youdon't like they're loaded with talent. You
need a couple of defencemen and sprinklesome guys in there, right, some
veterans in there. You need tosprinkle some good veterans in there. I
wouldn't have let cam Caalvico. Here'swhat you need to do. Yeah,

(35:27):
that's what you need to start withgoalies. They went through more goalies than
any in the last five years. They've had more goalies play there than any
other team in the league. That'sa problem. You need to solidify the
back end and then you can startbuilding. But you gotta, like,
honestly, man, you say whatyou want about getting your young studs up
front and place and sign it toyour back end. You got to build

(35:47):
your team from the net out, man, You got to build your team
from the net out. You startwith a goalie, then you go to
your defense, and then you roundout your four group. And I feel
like they just rushed a little bitand a little a little backwards. Yeah,
rutherword extended in Vancouver? How longwas he extended for? Three years?

(36:07):
Three years? Seventy four years old? He just turned seventy four up,
So they get a discount at thefuneral home too, then, And
like, I like, this yearis going really really good in Vancouver.
What this guy, What this guyhas done. What this guy has done
not only for the on ice portion, but the the off i stuff,

(36:32):
the bringing in the front office peopleand building a building a proper culture in
that organization. But you used tolook at that, You used to look
at that team and say, like, this is a country club club,
country club locker room. There's noaccountability right now, there's alignement. There's
alignment from the owner to the presidentto the GM to the coach, to

(36:57):
the players, to the seasons.Everybody is on the same page. And
two years ago that was the completeopposite. There was so much dysfunction.
And you bring in a well respectedguy like Jim Rutherford, and you bring
in uh like a Cam Cami Grnadoand you and you bring in all these
respected hockey people. It just buildsa winning culture. And that's and that

(37:17):
and that's transformed into the locker room, and then that and that is transformed
onto the ice. It starts uptop, the culture starts up top,
and that breathes down into the onice stuff. But it really does no
And I agree with you, andI am not saying that he's not deserving
of it at all. I'm notquestioning at all. I just I just
look at his age and I'm like, holy cats, the guy loves the

(37:38):
guy loves the challenge. I mean, he took over the team eighteen months
ago and you look at that teamon paper and you said, this is
this is an awful team. Andwhat they've done in the last eighteen months,
what they've done with the defense. You've got to admit, though,
a lot of chips fell into place, a lot of chip. Yeah,
a lot of chips did fall intoplace the uh year ago. Right now,

(38:00):
he was saying they needed major surgery. Okay, no, they did.
They did major surgery this summer. They bought out OEL. That's big
surgery. That's big surgery, right, and that and that eight million that
you freed up, it's gonna hurtyou a little bit in years three and
four when it's a four million dollarcap hit for that buyout, But that

(38:22):
allowed you to go out and signSussi Cole, pu Suitter, Teddy Blueger
with that OEL money. They signedfor of those players for Oel's capit like
that's those are four players that arehuge parts of this team. So that
like that's a move that they thatthey probably didn't want to do, but
in order for them to get theplayers in place that they want to play

(38:43):
the system, something guy had tobe done. Who signed Oel? That
was Arizona signed him. Who tradedfor him? Jim Benning? Okay,
that was Jim Benning's all. Basically, all they had to do was wait
one more year and Anton Roussel,Louis Erickson, and Jay Beagle were all

(39:04):
off the books. They would addthey would have had six million plus three,
they would have had twelve million dollarsoff the books, and instead got
six more years of OEL and tradedfor Connor Garland's rights and signed into a
five year deal. So they basicallyjust took twelve million dollars and pasted it
to twelve million dollars with Garland andEckman Larsen and you like, yeah,

(39:29):
no, I liked Garland. Ilike getting Garland at the time, and
and he's turn, No, Idid not. I didn't like that deal.
Yes you did. But now,but like that buy out, like
that had to happen. Is theregonna be consequences that they have to face
down the road, for sure,But in order for them to get going
in the right direction and get playersin here, that that play the right

(39:51):
way had to be done. Andhe's done a great job of build the
culture. All the props to him, he deserves it. Jack Eichel out
week to week with lower lower notinjury surgery, like what, I don't
I don't know what, I don'tknow. He's out four to six weeks.
So that's I'm not sure. I'mnot sure that that's a tough lot.

(40:13):
Wouldn't surprise me if he missed thewhole season, went on l T
I R. They went and gota big piece, and I mean magically
appears in the NHL playoffs. We'llsee. I just want to touch briefly
on some dilemmas in the NHL andactually professional sport, others professional sports too.
As we've talked about Bali's filing bankruptcyand stuff, I've heard now some

(40:36):
reports that Amazon is buying out Bally's. Now Amazon Prime is going to have
those teams games on there. Yeah, which is weird because I know Scripe
Scripts is that Scripts is doing theVegas Scripts. Yeah. Scripts. Then
ESPN Plus has it, but alot of people are I'm frustrated with the

(40:58):
way ESPN is doing their hockey.Their app sucks, Their app sucks,
sucks, sucks. I think Ithink this is a good opportunity for Amazon
and for the sports landscape in general. Because we talked about on this podcast.
I think it was maybe two yearsago how when we were talking about
like how maybe a corporation like Netflixwould maybe buy into a league like that

(41:21):
or something like that. And nowand now he's the Amazon to it.
So it's kind of interesting. Here'sthe recourse here, though you have to
buy an extra subscription. M andI don't know you know what I mean,
I'll have to look at the logisticsof like when it actually comes finalized
and you look at it and see, I don't think it's bad. I
think it's okay, anything better thanvalues. But what I'm saying to you

(41:43):
is, could you imagine tonight ifyou to turn the TV on and you
start flipping through to find the footballgame, but you can't find it,
but it's on a paid network thing? Then what well that that is in
the States every Thursday, Every Thursday, the game is on Amazon Prime and
you can only watch the game ifit's on Amazon Prime. They did that,
They did that on they did thaton last Monday. The game.

(42:08):
The game was on Peacock. Right, No, they did not know they
no, no, no, I'mtalking about the playoff game on Peacock.
It was the largest streamed event. It was the the largest stream event in
the history of streams. I understandthat, Blake, But what I'm saying

(42:29):
is you're not gonna gain new fansdoing right. You're not gonna the casual
fans aren't buying that. I'm gonnado you, I will say that.
And one of the things that ESPN'sdoing that's really pissing me off is,
you know, you used to beable to go to NHL TV and it
would show all the games and thescores, and you used to click on
them and you could click back andforth and it was super ESPN Plus.

(42:49):
You got a freaking wade through allthe freaking three hundred and seventy five college
basketball games that are on you know, Akron State against you know, Billy
Babs University, and you can't findthe goddamn hockey games. And now the
you know, the NHL TV usedto be able to go back, you
know, however many days and watcha game like, yeah, thirty days

(43:12):
the games are gone. You can'teven watch them anymore on Yeah. So
for me being a Canucks fan inSaskatchewan, I have to I split Sports
Net Plus with my friend. It'stwenty bucks a month and I get all
the games out of all the automarket games. It's it is what it
is. I mean, that's justlike my the Canucks games are blacked out
on my TV. They're blacked out, like that's the If I don't pay,

(43:36):
I don't I can't watch my team. So that that's the that's the
reality that I accepted, and II am no problem paying the twenty bucks.
But other other we have to prosports. We have to get rid
of this blackout crap. Oh,it's so bad. It's so bad.
Like always from Minneapolis, and thegames are blacked thought. If you're in

(43:59):
Minnesota, if you're in Minnesota,if you're in Minnesota, if you're a
baseball fan in Minnesota, the Twinsgames are blocked out, the Cubs games
blocked out. The Milwaukee Brewers gameis blocked out. It's so bad.
It's bad. It's bad. Honestly, Ruin's experiences. We got to hit
the fast forward button here quick.Let's talk about the BHL. They steal

(44:22):
five teams from the Alberta Junior HockeyLeague. I know you know a whole
lot more about this situation than Ido. Now, those AHL teams that
said they're leaving to go to theBHL next year suspended. They're not playing
games. Kids are not going toget opportunities. What the hell's going on
here with Hockey Canada. Oh well, it's not much hockey Canada. It's

(44:44):
not Hockey Canada. At all.Regular BHL is not in Hockey Canada anymore.
They left Hockey Canada last year. They're completely solely independent. They're in
an independent league. So the BHLso last year, BC Hockey let that
happen. They left BC Hockey lastyear, which is which shock people.

(45:07):
And then and then they left theCanadian Junior Hockey League and Hockey Canada and
that that puts some puts some wavesaround the league. But I I don't
have a problem with five Alberta teamsgoing over to the BHL if they feel
like that is going to be betterfor their program, and they're gonna play

(45:30):
against a caliber of teams that arein their own weight class. Because when
you look at it, the BrooksBandits, the Brooks Bandits kill everybody.
They went the league all the time, hold on, let me finish.
They win the league all the time, and they go to the Centennial Cup
they used to be called the RBCCup, and they breeze right through that

(45:53):
because the BHL doesn't go there anymore. So there's really no real competition there.
There's no competition for Brooks and andeveryone has been telling everyone's been saying,
we want to see Brooks play Penticton. We want to see Brooks play
Pindicton, and now we're going toget an opportunity to see that. Hold
on, I'm not done. Theonly thing that I don't agree with and
I was reading the AJHL statement thatthey put out and they said they they

(46:15):
found out these five teams were leavingthe BHL from the BHL press release,
that they didn't notify the Alberta JuniorHockey League that this is happening, which
I'm like, you would have hadsome inkling of that could happen. I
don't agree with suspending players. Idon't think players. I don't think players
should have to be punished for adultdecisions. I don't like that at all.

(46:42):
I don't think that's right for playersbecause it's not because not only is
it fair to the to the teamsthat are leaving the AJHL, what about
the teams that aren't leaving that havetheir games canceled now, So like,
I don't listen. I don't knowthe whole story on it. Could this
be good for junior hockey? Sureit could. They they want to form

(47:05):
a little super league and and rivalthe rival the U s HL or rival
the North American Hockey League, allthe props to them, all the problems.
Disagree with that. I just I'mjust wondering, like, why would
you not just keep this under wrapsand announce it at the end of the
year so it doesn't affect that, you know, you know what I'm saying,
Like, but I think I thinkthat I think it got leaked.
It got leaked on I got leakedon social media, and I think the

(47:28):
BHL felt pressure to release this,Okay, like it got leaked about two
and a half days before an actualannouncement, so I think they got a
little heat. I didn't know thatthe b SHL separated last year, that
the BHL has been superior to thea J and the s J. Yeah,

(47:51):
yeah, no, they they leftHockey Canada. They're not They're not
a part of Hockey Canada anymore. So why would Hockey Canada let that happen?
I don't do you know what Imean? Like, what's going on
in Hockey Canada, Because like aleague in the US, you couldn't just
say, well, we're leaving USAHockey like US Hockey. Wait a second
here, right, let's get Imean, I don't know. Yeah,
but like it's it'll be interesting tosee how this affects the junior landscape because

(48:15):
it's it's a pretty serious it's apretty serious, uh, pretty serious move,
it is. It's really like, that's half of that's almost half of
the AJ going over to BC.That's that's ah. Like, are they
gonna have to replace teams? Arethey gonna have to have expansion teams?
Now? Like? What what's thewhat do you think is gonna happen with
the AJ because of this? Nowthey're losing five teams? How do they

(48:38):
merge? Do they merge with theSJ, Like, I don't know,
I'm not sure. Probably you mergewith the SJ. Do you merge with
the SJ and form like a twentyteam league? Yeah, I don't know.
It would make probably more sense, right, Like, I'm not sure.
That's total speculation. I work inthe SJA. Like, I'm just
saying, I'm not saying that's happening. I'm just saying, like, could

(49:00):
happen. I'm not sure. Itjust would make sense, right because A
is in a tough spot now, they're in any teams, So yeah,
it'll be interesting to see how thatall plays out. Yeah. Yeah,
h three questions. It's time forthree questions. It's time for three questions.

(49:22):
Last week I fired three questions,I blake. It's his turn this
week to fire three questions. Thatmean, who would you rather have right
now? Nathan McKinnon or Connor McDavid. Nathan McKinnon really more complete? I
think? So? Yep the way, who would you rather have? To
a would you rather have Nathan McKinnonright now? Or koutoff Nathan McKinnon?

(49:46):
Is it close though? Nope?I would take Connor McDavid over kut.
Yeah, way too. You thinkyou think McKinnon is the best player in
the world right now? Yeah,it's interesting comments from you. Yeah,
who is the next coach that getsfired? Why is this funny? Why

(50:10):
is this funny? Oh, let'sjust make Torontal fans upset? Do you
think Matthews saved Keith a couple moreweeks? Probably? Right? If they
if they would have went lost,Edmonton lost and Calgary lost in Vancouver.

(50:30):
Uh, let's see. Let's seewhat they did today. Let's see what
they did and see they're in Seattleright now. They are They are in
Seattle. Two to one, They'reup to one. We'll see if they
blow We'll see if they blow up. Let's see who scored today for the

(50:51):
Ultron please, uh, Austin,Matthews and Robertson. So how about how
about Lander's great defensive play the othernight in Vancouver. Yes, he just
stood in front of the ned, didn't go in the corner. Didn't want
to get hit this guy. Youshot the bucket and he like almost like
got out of the way, soI didn't hit him. So in a

(51:12):
wetness guy, Well that was Matthewsthat leaned out the way against Edmonton and
let him shoot top. But Vancouver, Vancouver, he went into the corner
with the with the door off,and he he made an executive decision and
got the hell out of there. He said, he said, I getting
hit by the door. Listen, this guy after he signed his contract,

(51:34):
you told me contract he went fivegames without a point. I'm like,
oh my god, this is I'mlike, oh my god, dude,
you picked the wrong time to goon a five game slide. And then
and then he responds with three pointsagainst Vancouver in the second period. I'm
like, well, ship, heputs up a ton of points and he's
super offensively talented I'll give him thatall in the world. But you know
what, if you're gonna win championshipson top of your offensively talented, you

(51:54):
gotta go on the corners. Yougotta take the hits. You gotta make
some plays, right Connor McDavid PYeah, yeah, yeah. What's my
other question? Here? Where's mynotes? Uh? What team has the
most pressure to have a successful deadline? Like not not not pressure to no

(52:19):
no, no, not pressure tomake a move, pressure to have a
successful deadline. Calgary Flames. Ithink so they hold all the cards.
You said it earlier in this Iknow I did. I did they need
to get a return for those cards? Well, Calgary flam Calgary Flams.
Calgary Flames fans were ready to burndown the saddle home when when they saw

(52:42):
the return for the tyler to fullytrade and now look at that, Look
how that turns out. Now nowthey're like, oh my god, there
going to score forty goals. Iwas not upset with that move. There
was a lot of Flames fans thatwere there was There was a lot of
this is a trash trading Sarah, which is not a good player. And
now this guy and all this guyis a fan favorite, right, It's

(53:04):
it's got to be careful. Likeit's the same thing when Zadoroff got traded,
they all said it was garbage, right, But I haven't heard one
Flames fan say, Jesus be niceto have zadorof right now? Yeah?
Crazy, that works, It's crazy. A listener question comes from Dave Mark
Court Albany, New York. Whois the dirtiest team in the NHL currently

(53:27):
and all time? All time? When you think of dirty teams like all
time? What what? What franchisedo you think of? Liars? Yeah?
I would say that I would thinkof Austin. Really when you think
about it, some teams had littleglitches but not long term dirtiness. Right

(53:52):
Who was you know who is sucha you know who is such a dirty
player? Chris Simon back in theday about Martyr he's a little past Brad
Marshaan well, one of the dirtiestplayers in Washington team right now, that's

(54:20):
dirty, dirty team right now.And I had to think hard about this
one. But when I thought aboutit, I was like, oh yeah,
oh yeah, there they are adirty, dirty team. I'm trying
to think, you're I got it, man, I got well, you
have an advantage because you get tosit here and think about this. I
get put on the spot every week. What are you looking at? Pims?

(54:44):
No, what are you looking up? Do you think it's gonna pop
up on your screen? Blank?I'm just looking at teams here, Hang
on, ask ai? Is thatwhat you're doing? Uh? Yeah?
I all right. I don't knowwho's yours? Florida Panthers. Yeah,

(55:05):
I mean dirty? This year,Cousins is pretty dirty. It's not just
Cousins. There's a bunch of playerson that team that will do whatever it
takes. They're gonna be a sonof a bitch in the playoffs. They
always are. They're well coached too. They that team. If whoever looks
at their matchup for Round one andit says against Florida, they're gonna be

(55:28):
like, oh God, here wego. Right. A couple of years
ago, what I said Saint LouisSt. Louis Saint Louis is they're kind
of chippy. I don't know that'sa I don't know. I really don't
think there's a really dirty team inthe NHL right now Florida other than Florida.
I'll give you that, But otherthan that, like I don't I

(55:51):
don't know. The league has changedso much, Like it's like that,
there's not you don't like. Howbad is that Ryan Ree? You've signed
leaves or now he's a healthy scratch. It's just been for one point three
mil Hey, we better take iteasy on the Toronto No, they deserve
they deserve so much backlash right now. They're a little touchy though. They're

(56:13):
a little touch Yeah, they're alittle sensitive right now. They're a little
touchy. I wonder what the scoreis? Are they winning still? I
think it's one? All right tolet's uh, let's end this week and
go watch the collapse in Toronto. All right, all right, another hockey
week in the book. We're backyet again. Next week do it all

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars?
