(00:21):
It is time for the Debate Hockeypodcast Time the Dog some NHL hockey talk
All Star weekend, I host Brad. We were joining alongside my co hosts
of Fires and lots of talk aboutas we didn't think there would be since
there was not a lot of hockeythis weekend. We didn't know there was
going to be a fifty other millionthings happening in the hockey world that we
(00:45):
had to talk about, some good, some not so good. First thing,
I want to talk about something thatI like. I don't know why,
I just always sing jerseys are cool, and I want to talk about
the top sailing jerseys in the NationalHigh Key League and UH, top rally.
Our team, teams are teams areplayers. I got them both.
(01:07):
I got the top ten teams andI got the top ten players. Let's
start teams. Who's the top team? Who do you think? Uh?
I have to go with Montreal orToronto? Not even close. Montreal is
not even in the top ten.Toronto is number eight, Boston Bruins No.
Number one, New York Rangers numbertwo, Boston Bruins number three,
(01:30):
Vegas Golden Knights number four, ChicagoBlackhawks number five, Seattle Krack and number
six Pittsburgh Penguins, number seven,Colorado Avalanche, eight is Toronto nine,
New Jersey Devils, ten Detroit RedWings. Yeah, all the reginal six
teams are in there, right Son, Montreal, the Montreal that's it.
(01:51):
The rest of all five are inthere, right Yeah. Those are iconic.
Those are iconic jerseys. Sometime playersgot to be McDavid, Bedard,
McKinnon. David's not really. No. Number one is Connor Bedard, which
(02:13):
doesn't surprise me. It's his firstyear. He's going to get the jersey
sALS. Number two is Austin Matthews, number three, Passernak number four.
This one surprised Meins four, Crosby'sfive, Zabanajad is six, Novechkan seventh,
Marshan eighth, Hughes ninth, McKinnontenth, which, yes, Jack
(02:38):
the Devil's you know, yeah,Jack. Does any other Hughes matter?
Well, well, there's both there, there's two on New Jersey. It's
curious. Well, I'm pretty surethe one that's irrelevant is not. Luke
Hughes is not irrelevant. Just stoppretty good defenseman, rookie stop it.
(02:58):
Comparatively speaking, though, I'm prettysure he's not going out to his brother
on that team right away, rightaway, probably probably not. So.
Another thing that I really really like, other than hockey jerseys is hockey cards.
And I read this article this week, and I want to know what
you would do in this situation. So a Saskatchewan family found a case of
(03:20):
sixteen unopened, sealed nineteen seventy nineeighty oh Peachey card boxes. It's a
total of seven six hundred and eightycards in the packs, still sealed.
A Gretzki rookie. The latest highestoffer for a Gretzky or no. To
date, their highest offer they havereceived for a case is one point three
million. The last mint Gretzki rookiesold for three point seven to five million.
(03:46):
Difficult decision to make. Do yousell the whole case for one point
three million or do you take yourchances that there's a Gretzki or more.
I would I would I would sellI would sell uh for one point three
mil. I mean it's uh,it's a guaranteed one point three mil.
I mean I'm not a big uh. I mean, yeah, it'd be
nice to get the two point sixextra mill but I mean you're getting I'll
(04:12):
get three of them. You getthere seventy six hundred cards in there,
No, I know, but youcan get three of them, could get
I don't know, dude, that'sthat's such a game of chance. I
would take the money, to behonest with you. That's a lot of
cars to open up. I mean, one point three million, one point
three it's a lot of money. And give me calculator. There's sixteen boxes.
(04:33):
Forty eight cards in a box.Oh, that's seven hundred. That's
wrong. They got a typo init. That's seven hundred and sixty eight
cards. Okay, yeah, no, I'm kay. I'm taking the money.
Probably was seven thousand. If itwas seven thousand, I probably would
have took a chance, but yeah, seven Honestly, I would probably take
(04:54):
the money. But yeah, yourodds are probably still pretty good because I
believe in that said, I'm notone hundred. I believe there was like
four hundred, three hundred, fourhundred cards per set in that that year.
So I don't know, man,hard, that's a that's a tough
one. Would be fun as hellto open those tho, wouldn't it.
(05:15):
Yeah, yeah, rush, thatwould be one other thing before we get
into the show. I don't knowif you saw it. I believe his
last Monday night or last Tuesday night. So we gotta you gotta roll back
the memory. Did you see YUCSorrows come out and make a save on
Tim Stutzla. Yeah, and hegot a penalty for tripping tripping. Yeah,
(05:38):
Stutzo's got a history with this,he's been I'm not blaming him at
all. This is all on therefs. Yeah, I mean, it's
there is nobody he kind of didhe swung his leg to like, I
don't know, it's uh, hekicked his leg to make a save,
right, I mean would he havescored if you didn't get falled out?
(06:00):
Maybe? I don't know, Solet me ask you this. Maybe,
I mean maybe maybe the ref thoughtlike if he didn't, if he didn't
trip over the pad, he mightscore. Maybe that's why though the shot
was first, it hit his path. What I don't understand is, well,
how come then when a goalie comesout. Let's say the puck just
enters his zone and it's a raceright, and the goalie comes out and
(06:21):
slides and hits the puck right anddrops the player because the player goes flying
over him, right, how comethat's all? Wow? That happened,
That's happened before, that's happened before. Is ever one Dominic Cassick did it
to Marion Gabbrick, he got tripping. Wow. Most of the time,
though, the guys will slide outand they'll they'll hit the same time and
(06:45):
the player goes flying and the puckgoes flying and there's no call on that.
Yeah, I don't understand. Idon't know officiating. I just don't
understand it anymore. I don't.There's so many inconsistencies. We talked about
it in the last week's show withthat Vancouver thing. It just yeah,
it's weirdly, I don't. Istill to this day do not know goaltender
interferences, no idea. Yeah, yeah, And there's been a couple like
(07:12):
there was one where Hymon got pushedby good Branson into corpors Salo, not
corpor Salo merzleakns and the goal countedand the next night, the next night,
not the next It wasn't the nextnight. It was like maybe like
a three weeks later. Hymen gotpushed in by a Toronto player or sorry,
(07:33):
Nlander got pushed in by an oppositionplayer, the same thing that Hymen
did and it didn't count. Almostlike there's no man, there's there's so
much gray area. It's not good. They've got to figure it out.
They've got to figure it out,all right. On today's episode, we're
gonna talk Center of Trade. AttentionCenter seemed to be what people are looking
(07:58):
for right at the moment when itcomes to trade. Pieces will go around
the league, talk about LA's coachgetting fired, best on Best Player poll,
Yolt's future, and oil suspension,Hockey Canada scandal, and All Star
Weekend. All right, two bigcenters get traded this week. Let's talk
(08:22):
about both of them. Do youwant to start with Lynd Holmer Monahan?
We'll go monag first, Okay,Monahan traded to Winnipeg and Sean Monaghan gets
a first in twenty twenty four anda third and twenty twenty seven. Yeah,
the third in twenty twenty seven turnsinto a first if they win the
Cup this year. Well, ifI was Winnipeg and we won the Cup,
(08:46):
I get him three first You know, no, but this is a
good this is a good move. This is could win the Cup. They
could, they really really could thisis uh, this is just terrific asset
management by by Ken't use right becausehe gets a first from Calgary for taking
Monhan six million dollars last year.Right signs him to a one year,
(09:11):
two million dollar deal and turns aroundand flips him into another first and a
conditional third rump pick. So justthis is this is a great asset management
by by Montreal. Obviously he'll bemissed in that locker room. He's a
he's a big leader for them andplays in kind of all situations. But
this is a really good fit forUH for Winnipeg. Slots into the second
(09:33):
line with Eelers and Perfetti until until, uh, until Schifley gets back.
So I wonderful. I love itas a Flames fan. I love seananhand.
I think you know what most peoplein Calgary do. Yeah, he
was great. He was a greatCalgary Flame and he's went through hell.
He was a consistent thirty goal scorerwith Calgary. All the guy did was
(09:56):
produced. He's probably man, butwhen he was in his prime, he
there was nobody better than that guyin the bumper on the power play.
Nobody. But the thing is withShawn Monahan is. His injury history is
unbelievable. The moment that guy playedthrough is it's astonishing. I worry about
his durability. I think Winnipeg,I think this is a smart move in
(10:18):
Winnipeg. I didn't know that itwas. I didn't honestly. I didn't
think they were gonna have to geta give a first for Monahan, but
they did, and I think he'llbe good. I worry a little bit
about the longevity there. Looks goodright now though he's playing really well.
Pardon me, kind of thought maybeMontreal would re sign him at a dec
it might bring him back in thesummer. I wouldn't be surprised he's I
(10:41):
think I think he's a big partof that leadership group there. He ever
know, I mean that rarely happens. We always say that's going to happen,
but it rarely happens, right,It just rarely happens. I could,
but I don't know, the Winnipegdoesn't. We'll see how things progress
here. But that's probably a guythey could get it up. Well.
(11:01):
He he bet on himself one yeartwo mil and and the way he's going
he's gonna get he might get sixtypoints right, and uh, he's gonna
make He's gonna make himself probably fourmillion bucks. He's gonna probably double his
salary. I think turn will alwaysbe the issue when it comes to Sean
Monaghan. Yeah, I'd be atwo year deal, probably two year,
maybe even one year. So we'llsee what happens. Uh, it's a
(11:24):
really good fit though. It's it'suh, it's really cost efficient contract.
Two million bucks. I think itis. Play power, play, penalty
kill, really get in the faceoff, good defensively. So yeah,
I know it's good fit. It'sokay. They that's a deep center group
there, Shifley Monaghan lowery, Yeah, yep, that's a that's good.
(11:48):
That's good. Cocked and loaded here. This team's I like the roster.
I really really really like the roster. I like the way they're playing.
And when you got a goaltender likeConnor, boy, anything can happen,
right, Yep, totally agree.Lindholm. Lindholm is traded to Vancouver from
Calgary. In return, Calgary getsAndre Kuzmenko, Hunter, Bruce Kuwitz,
(12:16):
Janni Ermo, a twenty four firstrounder, a conditional twenty four fourth round
pick. I don't remember what thecondition is there if they went, if
they make the conference final, turnsinto a third earned. Okay, Yeah,
so everybody knew because Manco is goingto be a part of any deal
that Vancouver made, and it hadto be because of the cap of his
(12:39):
contract. So Vancouver gave up hunterBruce Davish ok some pace for ninety eight
points, some pace for ninety eightpoints as a defenseman in the OHL.
So he's here, comes with theCanucks defense. Listen, listen, he's
on. He's a he's a goodprospect. He's a good prosper Okay.
(13:01):
His ceiling is if he pans outright, if everything goes right for hundred
stavage. Kay, he quarterbacks anumber one power play? Right? Is
he quarterbacking a number one power playin Vancouver for the foreseeable future? If
he pans out, no, goQuinn right, he's blocked the way that
(13:24):
he plays. He was blocked toVancouver. That's that's as simple as that.
He his value is never going tobe higher. This guy can This
guy could have sixty points next year. You don't know. This guy's value
is at an all time high. And Vancouver has been notoriously bad for just
(13:45):
for not selling high end prospects.Think, but man, the Canucks are
in a win now mode right now. They're in a win now mode.
That for one second, I agreewith you. I either that file in
a cell high mode with this player. I completely agree. But if that
(14:05):
is the case, and we bothagree on that, if that is,
are you surprised it took a twentytwenty four first rounder plus a higher end
prospect like this, because that's that'spretty good price tag. A little bit,
I mean, but part of itwas that they had to take on
Kuzmenko and his contract has got ayear left of his deal like that.
(14:26):
That factors into a lot of people. A lot of people aren't looking at
that from the Canucks standpoint. Theycleared five point five million dollars off next
year's books. That's huge. That'sthat's really important for this Canucks team because
they got a lot of agents anda good prospect. That's okay, I
mean, Lindholm is Lindholm is thebiggest fish on the market that you could
(14:48):
go grab. He's the biggest fish. Is he having a bit of a
down year? Yeah, he's havinga bit of a down year. He's
as here, he's having he's gotnine goals. Okay, this this is
no disrespect. This is no disrespectto Calgary's roster at all. Elias Peterson
is probably one of the best playersthis guy's ever gonna play with? Right?
(15:09):
Would you agree with that? Sohe's gonna join he's gonna join a
power play with Right, No,for sure, pretty equal caliber players.
But now he's gonna be on thenumber one power play with Besser, Hughes,
Miller, Patterson. He's gonna he'sgonna produce for the Canucks. He's
(15:31):
gonna produce big time. And Ilove his versatility. He's he's a very
responsible two way elite center. Twoyears ago he finished second in the Selki
to Patrice Bergeron scored forty two goals. This guy knows how to score.
He just doesn't forget how to score. He's got a The thing with Lindholm
is he's not a play driver. He needs somebody, he needs somebody to
play with him. And he's moreof a you know, I was watching
(15:54):
his highlights and from two years agoand when him and when he was a
chuck and and goodrow. He's aguy that finds the soft areas and capitalizes
on his chances. Peterson is greatat finding guys. Miller's great at finding
the open guy. I think heI think this is a I think it's
gonna be a perfect fit. TheCanucks have been trying to find a right
(16:15):
handed centerman slash winger for right now. He's playing on the wing right now
with Peterson. But I'm saying, but he's the only right handed centerman on
this roster that can now go outthere and take an important face off on
your strong side. And you don'thave to rely on Miller to take every
single face off and if you needto put him in the middle to say
(16:38):
you're playing a Colorado in the playoffs. He's a shutdown center. Like he's
a shutdown guy. It gives theteam so much versatility to play matchup roles
now. And I don't know,man, I just I think it's a
great fit. Everybody. Everybody cantalk about, Oh is this a pear
reental? I think they can extendthis guy, think Boud would you rather
(17:00):
hold on? He wants nine milliondollars nine million dollars to play with the
Calgary Flames. Okay, you don'tthink, you don't think. You look
at this Canucks roster and say Imight take a million and a half lest
to stay with these guys? Whynot? Like time out? This what
I see him sign up for sevenand a half mil. This Canucks roster
(17:22):
twelve months ago was junk and okay, I I could I could do.
I could see you sign him atseven and a half mil. You want
to give him seven and a halfmil. I think he's worth seven and
a half mili. Yeah you doso? Then? Yeah? Okay,
So that being said, they havethirty eight million dollars in cap. They
gotta sign Patterson, Heronic and Lindome. Now those are the three main guys.
(17:47):
What are you gonna do for TeddyBlueger? What are you gonna do
for those? Teddy Bluer? ThatTeddy Blueger is like a million and a
half to two million dollar player.I fill those in like you're not gonna
I understand. I understand that Ronik'slooking at probably six and a half to
seven million. Okay, how areyou replacing Zadoroff? Well, they got
(18:10):
uh, we're not. They're notgonna be able to keep the door off.
He's a rental. Yes, we'renot gonna be able to keep the
door off. I think they willprioritize. Did I say they're right,
prioritize, prioritize signing Lindham over keepingZadorv and Myers? Yeah, I do.
(18:30):
Wow. But then they're going backwardsthough, because Vancouver clients. But
listen, hear me out though, just hear me out on this Vancouver.
For years, me and you talkedon this show, and the hockey world
talked about they they were, youknow, pretty solid up front, and
I would say, you take Lindhamout of the mix for next year and
they're pretty solid up front. Butnow if you start letting like, and
(18:52):
I'm not telling you to go resign Myers at a big dollar okay,
Butler Myers has been overpaid for thelast five years in this market. Do
you not think he takes like ayou don't think he takes like a two
and a half three million dollar contract? Me and a half, Yes,
you know, okay, three aslike a three million dollar three three times
three. But you're gonna do yougotta do that for you gotta do that
(19:17):
for ronic. You gotta fill thedoor off spot. You gotta. Hey,
listen, listen, I'm not sayingit's gonna be easy. It's not
gonna be easy, but I thinkthey I think they will try hard to
extend Lindholm. I think your teamis better served scoring up the back end
with that money than it is shoringup lindh Holm because your forward lines without
(19:37):
Lindholmers are fine. They're fine,They're not amazing. You don't think that.
Can you think the Canucks didn't haveto go out and get lind Holm
right now, I don't think lindholI think Lindham's an awesome player. I
loved him in Calgary right but thelast two years have been extremely frustrated with
his play. He doesn't put uppoints and he had won what way?
(19:57):
He had one? Two games?Yeah he had no, no, no,
I'm not talking about that. Hehad one good year. One he
needs but I'm but I'm What I'mtelling you is he's not a play driver.
He needs somebody to drive the busfor him. That's an expected Dronk
Chuck did. That's what cadron KaChuck did. Now, if you play
this guy with Peterson and mckayef soso, I agree with you. But
(20:22):
when I pay a guys seven anda half million or more, he better
be a play driver. They're Yeah, but he's he he's a very responsible
two way player. Agree. Agree, that's worth that much. It's not
like he's a one dimensional seven anda half million dollar player. You know
you're gonna get this guy working hisass off at both ends of the rink.
(20:45):
I completely agree. So that's theperfect fit for this team. Like
I'm telling you, you're gonna haveto if the Canucks want to go where
they want to go, you're gonnahave to go through the Empton Oilers,
the Vegas Golden Knights, and theColorado Avalanche. You're gonna need gonna listen.
It would not surprise me if inthe playoffs Vancouver at some points goes
(21:07):
Peterson, Miller, lind Holme downthe middle, because like that you have
you're gonna have to match up withlike McKinnon and chel and McDavid like they
got lind Home in shut down lines. That is your top shut down line.
Now Peterson and lind Holm is yourtop shot down line. It takes
(21:29):
it takes the load off JT.Miller and brock Besser. They can maybe
get some softer matchups, take advantageto that thing. They got a lot
of options, man, they gota lot of options. I really like
this is a win win trade.And listen, I'm a huge I'm a
big CU's Mako guy. It wasvery evident that this guy cannot play Rick
Talckett style. And and I hopehe goes to Calgary and pops off.
I really do, because he he'sa fan favorite. Calgary's gonna love this
(21:52):
guy. He's a happy, golucky guy. He's just got no confidence
right now. And when you're agoal scorer no confidence, I mean,
boy, it's it's tough sledding. It's tough sledding. I hope he slides
in there with Hubert on producers.I really do, because he's a fun
player to watch when he's on.Boy, he he scored thirty nine goals
this year. He's exciting to watch. But when he's got no confidence,
(22:14):
he's not shooting the puck. Imean you're not. You're taking up five
and a half billion dollars up inthe press box for the Canucks right now,
right and they turn that into areally producible, really uh good player
in Lyndham. So I think it'sa win win I don't disagree. I
think it's a pretty fair deal.I think it's a fair return for Lindholm.
I think I think it's a prettyfair deal. I really do.
(22:37):
I think you got to give upsomething to get some dude, and especially
like think about that. Sorry,if I'm a Vancouver fan, is this
your your prospect cupboards are not reallyvery stacked? Hold on? Hold on?
They didn't trade any of their topprospects. Yeah, could say Bruce
(23:00):
s Trevitch is a top prospect, but you didn't trade Tom Molander or Lequermacki
or Atu Ratu or Pod Goles. And you still have those four Okay,
those you only you don't have afirst or second pick next year. It's
it's what this year? We don'tWe got a first and second next year
in twenty twenty four coming up.This year, you don't have a four
(23:23):
a second up coming. Yeah, that's okay. I mean listen there,
what did I tell you? Whatdid I tell? What did I say
on this podcast? Literally two monthsago? I said the Canucks are going
to be aggressive because this team's gonnabe hard to keep together? And this
is what that's what you do.You go and get the doorf and you
go and get lind home. Andit wouldn't surprise me if they got creative
(23:45):
and brought in another guy, broughtin another forward, right, I think
they have to be aggressive. Ido. I think it's a really prime
opportunity for this team. Got whatyou've got. You've got you got players
that are playing above their potential. You got Brock Bester scoring thirty goals.
You got one of the best goalten in the league. You got a
(24:07):
deep defense core like it's old time. Dude. Why did I hear rumors?
And I mean I take rumors ofa grain of soult believe that.
Why did I hear those? Whywhy are we hearing that already? I
don't know it? Shut it down, and so did Jim Rutherford. I
don't. I just don't. Idon't see it. It's Uh. He's
been a good fit on the thirdpair of Myers. He got benched actually
(24:30):
taking bench in the whole third period, uh a few games ago because he's
played like ship. Good for him. That's accountability. You play like ship,
you ain't playing. The sad thingis, though he does it way
too frequently. Who talking no no, no, no, no, no
no no, he does. He'sgot a couple, He's got a couple
of tough games, but he's he'sbeen pretty pretty fine. Uh Like for
(24:56):
the Canucks, like an other another, I think they should target a guy
like Anthony do Claire for a middlelike a middle six, cheap cost winger.
Like fact, I think you needto get another defenseman over a win.
Yeah, you can't have enough defensemanfor the playoffs. I honestly believe
(25:17):
that. I hate to say thatyou can't have enough defenseman for the playoffs.
You have seven NHL d men rightnow, well you probably need eight,
well eight if you count Noah Julesonand I don't count you. You
want no Jilson playing Game seven ofthe Stanley Cup Finals, I don't,
but no, I mean he's aplayer. I'm not saying, I'm just
I'm just excited, dude. Likethe the Canucks haven't been I haven't went
(25:42):
for a deadline since. I mean, they picked up Tyler to Foley before
the COVID stopped. Before that,it was like twenty thirteens. But it's
been a long dark time for Canucksfans. So to see them being aggressive
and go and get a big fish. What does this mean for Colorado?
All? They need a second linecenters, so bad. They missed out
on lend Home, they missed outon Monah, Like, what's the next
(26:03):
move for them? They've been tryingto replace Cadrey since he left. I
think they I think they need abackup goalie more than anything. Yeah,
you might not be wrong, Gorgyahasn't been very good this year. I
think you need I need thing. You need to solidify the back end.
I I think that's more of apriority if I'm Joe Sager. But like,
(26:26):
do you really think Ryan Johansson's theanswer second line center. I think
he's more of a third green centerguy. Probably not. But I've seen
a lot of teams go deep inthe playoffs with a with a group that
you're like, jeez, I didn'treally think that was gonna work, and
it did. I I mean,I'm is it ideal on paper? Like,
I'm just gonna tell you this.I did how many years where I
looked at my Flames a couple ofyears ago and I was like, this
(26:47):
is the best of defense on paper. You said it too. I didn't
look the best on the ice.I had a group of forwards and I
was like, whoof on paper?Boy? This is salty. It wasn't
so salty played on paper, that'sfor sure. Let's let's flip the script.
We looked at Vancouver's roster at thebeginning of this season. I mean
you both thought adequate. Not thatgreat, but adequate. I'm to miss
(27:12):
the playoffs, so that's what I'msaying. Like that, when I came
into this season for them with notmuch expectations, like I was just like,
like, we'll see and nobody, nobody predicted them the first place almost
at the middle of February. It'sit's crazy. That's what's so wonderful about
hockey. Things can change in twelvemonths. Yeah, rosters change in twelve
(27:36):
months. It's awesome. It's awesome. It's great for the league for sure.
Time to go around the league.Another coach falls in the NHL.
Thirteen of them since last season isthe Rangers, Calgary, Anaheim, Washington,
(27:59):
Nashville, columb Us twice, Edmonton, Saint Louis, Ottawa, Minnesota,
Islanders, and the Kings. Now, holy, did you did you
name Edmonton? I did? Yeah. Yeah, It's uh, it's a
tough business. I mean, youget off to the best friend, you
get off to the best starting franchise, history, and and all of a
(28:19):
sudden, you lose fourteen to sixteen, and and you know, the first
fifteen games, you think you're you'refat and happy and you're you're coasting along,
and all of a sudden, shipjust hits the fan, and uh,
that's that's the way it goes.I mean, we we kind of
suspected this may happen. Anytime youlose fourteen to sixteen, you gotta do
(28:42):
something. You can't just say. It's either fire. It's either fire the
coach or make a trade. Youcan't fire players, so I'll players,
right, Yeah, sit players. But I mean there was the dark guys
that weren't producing. Like you're paintingDubois. I hate to pick on the
ball, he's down, but it'slike I would have said, Douty,
(29:03):
I would have said, I wouldhave said, Dowdy, I don't like
what you're talking about in the lockerroom. Be a leader, not a
don't cause controversy. Yeah. ButDevant did that and woke up the avalanche.
He did it completely different, thoughwe talked about this last week on
the show. He did it wasthe same message, though it was the
exact same message. There's guys inhere that are more worried about their individual
stats than than winning games. It'sexactly what Dowdy said. It's the same
(29:26):
thing there. There's different messages,I mean, and and coming from a
guy like Taye, who's been avery good defenseman. And it's the same
thing with with Dowdy. He's ano rsh winner, He's a two time
Stanley Cup winner. He's trying tospark his team, right, So I
didn't have a problem with what hesaid. He's he's not wrong, right.
(29:48):
I mean, I don't know.It's a tough it's a tough business
week. We went down this roadlast week. I just questioned his I
questioned how the locker room views him. I really do, I really do
well. And now they bring theybrought in DJ Smith as an assistant coach.
I did see that today. Idid see that. I don't know
what that's going to do. Thatsounds like a Vancouver move, right,
(30:11):
You bring in an assistant coach beforeyou hire a head coach, Like,
does that make sense you They gotan interim head coach. They got an
interm head coach the rest of theyear, Jim Hiller. That's a Canucks
classic moment. That's for consulting firm, the Vancouver Canucks. Right, all
(30:33):
right. He did a player pollthis week and we're not talking about this
long. I just want to runand run through a little quick. The
Athletic does this player pole every yearwhere they ask I believe they asked like
two hundred plus NHL players, Uh, best player in the league. I
think we're pretty I'll tell you it'ssome of the ones that I thought were
interesting. McDavid wins it, McKinnonsecond, couch Off third, and there
(30:56):
was Crosby, McCarry, caprice off, Matthews, Barkov forst Berg and Aaron
Interesting. That's who do you thinkthe best goalie? Who do the players?
Wouldn't surprise me if it was AndreVassilevski. It was forty four percent
(31:17):
at Vassilevski, Third was Hellibuck,Second was helli Buck, excuse me,
Third was Sorokan and Demko tied, then Shasturkin Swayman, three percent, got
other and then there was there wasa couple one percenters here, a three
percent cut for Sorrows, two pointseventy three for Flurry, Olmark Bennington again,
(31:38):
Sup voted for himself one of theplayers high and you're only got one
percent. Really, he's coming offhe's coming off an injury. Though Aydon
Hill got one percent too. Yeah, I don't even want to talk about
the most underrated player in the league. Barkoff wins it every single time.
(32:00):
But how can you be underrated atthat point? You know? There was
a couple of interesting names though, that were mentioned here. Mattias Masseli was
mentioned, and have you ever watchedHe's really a he's crafty, Chandler Stevenson,
Adrian Kempe, Jason Dickinson, GustafWorslein, Charlie Coyle. Interesting names
(32:24):
mentioned that the player is named brockNelson. It's very interesting. Yeah,
uh, this is a good one. Most overrated player in the league.
Oh boy, I'm not gonna guess, so name themoy, Trevor Ziegris won,
Darnell Nurse two, could chuck three. This is players voting, players
(32:45):
voting. Yeah, du Bois wasmentioned, Ovechkin was mentioned. Hubertou was
four point nine for four point ninefive percent of the players set. Really,
we'll think of all the hype hegets, how big of a factor
is he? Now? Really, how big of a factor is he I
(33:07):
mean, he's getting old, He'snot a factor. Jacob Truba was named
Evander kaneose are just two people thatjust fucking hate them? Yeah? True,
Drew is not overrated. All right? Who's the player in the league
whose face you would like to punchthe most? Brad Marshaan Nick Cousins went
(33:30):
away? Oh yeah, and thenMarshan Kachuck Bunting, Connor Garland Hathaway,
Brady Kuchuk. This I had tolaugh. Trevor Ziegres has got a couple
of votes, Rasmus Anderson did.Who wants to punch Rasmus Anderson might not
(33:50):
Amonton somebody on Empton. Oh andthen they they did some things for the
best and the worst raft. Wedon't need to go into that, but
let's move on. Speaking of badthe Arizona Coyotes. They keep saying that
they're going to have this arena dealand it keeps getting pushed out, and
the deadline goes by, and adeadline goes by. Well, this week
(34:14):
at the All Star Game, shit, can I get the fan with Marty
Walsh and he kind of went offabout them in the situation out there and
how it's crazy how deadlines keep gettingpushed and pushed and pushed. He's fed
up. And then I don't blamehim. I mean it's he even talked
about how he's put in requests forthings to get from the team and they
(34:39):
haven't given it to him, aboutthe buildings and stuff. So yeah,
yeah, I don't know. II uh, I'm not sure. It's
a very very fishy situation. Likebut but Gary Bettman loves that market for
some reason. I but I know, and I agree, But I feel
(35:00):
like he's starting to turn his comments. But this Betman's comment was are we
talking about? What are you talkingabout? When he interviewed with Ron McLean.
No, this was another quote duringhis uh address it of the media.
All right, okay, Alex Morellotold me he was certain he will
(35:22):
get this done. I am hopefuland reasonably confident, reasonably confident he's gonna
do what he says. I thinkI think this is starting to wear on
Betman a bit. And in ourten Prediction show at the beginning of the
year, I predicted this year thatthe Coyotes would announce a movie of the
team next year, and I stillthink that's gonna happen. Well, there
they How many times have we seenall they have a deal in place to
(35:46):
get a land down in Phoenix. It's like, okay, right, it's
one thing after another. I meansoon as soon as the soon as the
residence of of Tempe or whatever itwas client that thing, I mean it
should be should have been done. You should have been out of there,
you should have been looking to relocate. Yeah. Yeah, that's it's clear
(36:07):
that that that that market doesn't wanthockey there. No, they the fans
and the residents spoke that that shouldhave been all that it needed to be
done. Yeah, moving to SaltLake or or whatever. I don't know.
Yeah, me too. I alwaysbeen saying this for years, right,
(36:28):
talk too, I think you wouldbe a cool hockey market. I
think you would be a cool hockeymarket. At two and forty three episodes,
I think we've talked about it onone hundred and thirty of them,
right. Yeah. Olympics four Nations, The NHL announces that they will participate
in the twenty six, twenty twentycan you say twenty twenty six and twenty
thirty Olympic Hockey tournaments? Yeah, and also announced a twenty twenty five four
(36:52):
nation's face off, which will beCanada, US, Sweden and Finland.
And I don't know. Yeah,I know you don't like the RU Russia
not being in a but who knowsby twenty twenty six, Who knows by
twenty twenty six if they're back inthe Olympics. I don't know. Let
me ask a quick question on this. We can all not agree with Russia's
(37:15):
decisions, but does that should thatpenalize sports? And here's another reason why
I say that, because if Canadaor the US did something, I don't
think we get shut out of this. Yeah, I mean that's a fair
(37:37):
point. Like I just I don'tknow. I mean, but by no
means by me saying this, doI condone what Russia is doing. I
don't want any unrest in our worldat all. But I'm just sitting here
looking at like from a from likea realist perspective, and it's like,
okay, does it affect sports?Like by by letting Russia play in these
(37:58):
tournaments? Does is that the restof the world saying it's okay? No,
absolutely not. It's no one issaying that. And by letting them
play in sports, I don't thinkthat's you know, the Olympics is pathetic.
They just let they just say, well, you just can't be called
Russia. You can be Russia, but you can't athletes of Russia. So
like, so, what do weneed to play like childish games by naming
(38:20):
them something different or what do weneed to do to make this politically correct?
Because I don't condone it at all, But I also think it's ludicrous
to not let them play in thehockey tournament. Yeah, that's fair,
because so if we're going to takeit so far as to say you're not
playing in the Nation's face off andyou're not playing the Olympics because of it,
(38:40):
you know, then why aren't wetelling the players you're not allowed to
play in the league. What thehell's the difference? Right, the hell's
the difference? I don't understand that. And I I'm I'm not against a
best on best tournament, but thisisn't going to be best on best because
the part of the best isn't goingto be allowed to play. Yeah,
Koutrov and Caprizov and o V andhe is one of the most fun you
(39:07):
know, you can we can allsit and say that the US Canada rivalry
is you know is the greatest rivalry. It's really Canada, and Russia is
pretty good too. Canada Russia oneand the US Russia one. Yeah,
Miracle on Ice Hello, Yeah, you're right, right, You're many more
rivalry games. You know the bubblehockey game that comes out, Remember you
(39:30):
know the Dome bubble hockey game.Yeah, in the States, that's Canada
Russia. Yeah, it's not canIt's excuse me, it's US Russia.
It's not Canada, US, it'sUS Russia. Yeah. That's what I
that's the part that I just,I just I'm just happy that we're we're
getting international play because we were donewith the All Star Game. The last
(39:53):
one, uh, the last onewe had was twenty eighteen, Soshi,
right, And and now you knowwe get to see Crosby play with McKinnon
and you know, all these guysplay together and listen, and we we
talked about do you start naming theCanadian guys? I think the US roster
(40:15):
is going to be assault. No, listen, I'm just saying I told
you about this on this podcast.I don't love Canada's chances to get a
gold medal. I don't love theirgoaltending. I don't care how good you
are up front and how good youare in the back end. If your
your options right now are Aiden Hill, Darcy kemper Mark and Flurry. Uh,
(40:37):
Jordan Bennington might be missing a couplemore, but I mean Tristan Jari
versus Thatcher, Demko, Connor Hallibucker, Jake Gottinger. I know who I'm
taking to three boy, I knowwho I'm taking And you can even put
you can even put Jeremy Swaming intothat conversation too. Like it's they're they're
(40:58):
so stacked and and they're gonna havejust as much firepower up front and on
the back end as Canada. It'sthey're gonna be good rosters. And you
know, you even take a lookat that Sweden or Finland roster and they're
gonna. Yeah, you got HarrisonNeelander, you got you got Ericsonack,
I mean you're you're back in,You got Edmund, you got Mark Streman
Nett. Like they're they're good. It's I like, those four teams would
(41:21):
be cool to have Russia or theCzech Republic in there. Yeah, maybe,
but I think that's I think thatout of the four they could have
picked that's the right four to pick, you know, though, you know,
I don't know what the format is, but I think if you really
want to do this right, yousend Sweden and Finland overseas and have them
play a best of five and youhave US play Canada in the best of
five and then the winners meet inthe US to play best of five.
(41:45):
Yeah, no, that would bethat would be a cool idea. Whatever.
Yeah, So, so they're doingthe Four Nations next year, right,
twenty twenty five, and then theOlympics in twenty twenty six, and
then I believe it's every two yearyears, So you'll have the Four Nations
in twenty twenty seven, and thenyou'll have the Olympics in twenty thirty.
(42:06):
Alternate, alternate every other year, every year, every other year, so
twenty four, sorry, twenty five, twenty eight, and then the Olympics.
Yeah. So there's four guaranteed dateslocked in for international hockey, which
hockey fans are are pumped because becauselike Crosby's not getting any younger, right,
(42:28):
Like we want to see Crosby placeMcKinnon and Badar and all McDavid and
all this stuff. Like, right, hockey, I want to see the
best. I know they can rushout whatever. But like we we've been
craving for international hockey for a longtime. We're finally getting it right.
One of the things, though, that I think you're not taking into consideration,
is we're we're craving best on bestin our time zone. We're not
(42:54):
craving best on best at four inthe morning. I'll still wake up at
four in the more to watch, you know what I'm saying. You're not
waking up at four in the morningto watch. That depends on how you
are. Canada Russia said gold medalgame, and I'll wake up at four
am. Yeah you are. I'mjust saying, though, like you know,
(43:14):
when I when I look back, like I really remember the the Calgary
Olympics earlier, I really really rememberthe Vancouver Olympics. Is my middle daughter
was a newborn, so I wouldbe up at night late watching the games
with you know, giddy, tryingto get her to sleep. You know,
you you remember those Olympics a wholelot more than when they're in you
(43:38):
know, I still remember the Soshiones pretty well. I remember the Soshi
ones pretty well. The game theywere on the middle of the afternoon.
I wasn't, but well it's ahell of a lot better than the middle
of the night, right right right, I don't know. Yeah, one
other thing I want to talk about. I don't know if you saw this,
(44:00):
but there was a suspension this weekin the O H L and tiager
Ice Dogs forward alex Asendoran. Itwas just suspended indefinitely. Now, I'm
not condoning what he did, butI'm just trying to get to name a
(44:22):
L e X A S S Ad O U R I A N.
He made a gesture to the otheropponent, threatening that he was going to
slit his throat. Yes, yes, And he's been suspended indefinitely by the
(44:43):
league, indefinitely. And I wasthinking about that, and I'm not condoning
what he did, but I'm sopuzzled by this. I see players more
often get suspended by gestures. Healso said you're He also said you're f
and dead. Okay, so PhilEsposito did that? Well, well,
(45:05):
who who did that? Who wasit? Was it? Caudre to Gardano
Cadri did it about five years ago. He was in Toronto to Giordano.
The nineteen seventy two Russian Canada SummitSeries, freaking Phil Esposito did it?
Yeah, Like, how many gamesdid cadri get do you remember? I
(45:29):
think it was like four or five? Okay, Okay, But here's here's
my point. I'm not condoning thatat all. But what I'm saying is,
why do I see a trend forpeople getting longer penalties for saying something
or gesturing something then actually physically freakinghurting somebody on the ice? Yeah?
(45:50):
Why do I Why don't we seein trends like that you can slash the
shit out of somebody and nothing happens, but if you call him the name
on the way to the penalty box, your history. Yeah, just puzzling.
I'm just puzzled. It shouldn't besuspendable, absolutely, But like,
come on, let's look at wherewe're really having problems here, right,
here's trash talk that that is said, oh my god, and that even
(46:15):
in the stass catcher in junior hockeyleague, like I've been seeing a lot
of tens just get handled out likethey're just having tens like candy for trash
talk and taunting. And it's Idon't know, man, it's kind of
it's interesting. You just need tobe able to be tough for human beings
once in a while. It's agame this. You know. One of
(46:36):
the things that I've heard people sayabout hockey for centuries, centuries. What
am I doing about not one hundredyears old, century decades for decades is
hockey is one of those sports forme. And you can go at it
on the ice and say things anddo things to each other and after all
the time and after we can sitand have a beer and be buddies.
(46:57):
Right. Yeah, yeah, Idon't want to be a man. Yeah,
I don't want to talk about thiswhole on, but this is the
Hockey Canada sex scandal. Thing kindof broke last week and kind of went
a little bit further today when Winsorpolice had their the press conferences and the
charges were I don't know, Idon't kick down the curb. I guess
(47:19):
I don't really know what happened, even the charges I think they were.
So they had they had their firstcourt hearing today. None of the players
are president on Zoom. It wasjust the players lawyers and it was just
a basically just a quick first hearingand kind of get the ball rolling.
I guess it got dismissed or adjournedto April thirtieth. Uh, this is
(47:44):
going to take about but well,I mean they were saying that there's not
even going to be a trial tillthe latest twenty twenty six. So can
we can we agree that these playersare officially done in the National Hockey League,
well until the trial is over.Yeah, I mean they won't play,
you know, the game for sure. Well, I've never seen a
(48:05):
professional athlete take four years off andcome back. Well, it'd be two.
But yeah, I don't know,I don't know. I just I
think they're still they're all still young, though they're all relatively young, so
I know. But where do yougo play? Do you go overseas?
We're gonna have to. You're gonnahave to go to the k They probably
won't allow them to the kh all. No, no, no, no,
(48:29):
the KHL will take him, That'swhat I'm saying. The KHL.
Yeah, the Canadian government will notlet them leave the country. Yeah,
they might not. You're right, they will not let them leave the country.
I would guess. Oh, here'sa couple of questions before we move
on. I don't want to talkabout this whole lot there's a couple of
things in order said, and andand I don't don't know if there's answers
for this. Remember, first ofall, when I listened to the press
(48:50):
conference day, the first police officerthat spoke sounded like a robot? Did
he not? And that sounded weird. I don't know why this took so
long. I never heard an answertoday. I heard a lot of it
should not take this long, butit did take this long. I want
to know why Hockey Canada wasn't broughtto the forefront a little bit more because
(49:10):
it was their event. But I'msure that I'll come out a little bit
more as we get more information.I want to know if it is a
coincidence this was held off until afterWorld Juniors. I don't know. That's
probably just me speculating. Will theseplayers ever play another NHO game? I
don't know. I guess we'll waitand see what the justice system does.
I hope they get and I'm surethey will get a fair trial. And
(49:36):
I guess the only part that reallyfrustrates me the most about this is you're
geting Canada covering it up with theslash fund. That is huge. That
is disgraceful, It's disgusting. Itis Dylan Dubey claiming mental health issues.
Hold on, pause, pause, that's bad what he did that? Do
(50:02):
you believe? Do you so?Do you believe? Do you believe Calgary
that they had no idea about this? Do you believe because multiple reports that
their lawyers instructed the players not tomention it? Did Calgary know that this
situation was going to come to Yes, they did, all the teams did.
But if a player comes to youand says I have to leave for
mental health issues and they reported assomething other than mental health issues, then
(50:27):
that's a bad that's that. Thenthat's on Calgary. Right If a player
comes to you and says, isI got to leave for mental health issues,
you have to report it as I'mleaving for mental health issues. Well,
if you're if you're Dyland Bay,why why wouldn't you just say,
like like Carter hartes, that needto take a leave of absence exactly,
don't don't don't give, don't say, don't don't paint the picture for that,
(50:49):
just say you need to leave ofabsence and definitely himself as the victim,
right WHOA Yeah he did, andto put his team, and it
put the organization in a tough spot, is what it did. Agan really
tough spot because they have to knowCalgary had to backtrack and be there,
and they got a lot of backlashon that. They did a lot of
that is not even there really theirfault. It's not their fault at all.
(51:10):
They had to report what they weretold on what they were instructed right,
and he had no choice. Ifeel I feel bad for the Flames,
but we get about two minutes hereto get through the All Star where
this is turning into a monster longepisode. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
All Star Game. Didn't watch it. Here's what I Here's what I took
away. I didn't watch it.Okay, you're going to fill me in.
I didn't watch it. Here's here'swhat I got from not watching it.
(51:35):
I didn't know who Tate McCrae is. Evidently she's big and talked about
all over the place. Now he'sup and coming. Coucher often barrasses himself
and the game and should receive fiftyslashes of game from here on out.
Connor McDavid is definitely the league's goldenboy. That's all I got. That's
all I got. Yeah, Isent you the graphic. I sent you
(51:55):
the graphic. The numbers were wayup and which is which is what the
league wanted. Do you hear whatthe numbers reported in the US were.
I have no idea the draft thatwas televised, right, I'm just pulling
it up here. I want tomake sure I get the right number.
The All Star Draft got forty sixthousand viewers in the US. I don't
(52:19):
I don't care. I'm just sayingit was. It was The skills competition
was way more entertaining and way moreengaging, and the players actually there was
no gimmicky players coming out with propsand none of this, none of this
bullshit pre recorded events, and itwas just like, we're gonna do the
(52:44):
hardest shot, We're gonna do arelay, we're gonna do a passing challenge,
we're gonna do the fastest skater, and we're gonna do six events and
we're gonna eliminate the bottom four. We're gonna go to a final eight,
we're gonna drop it down to six, then we're gonna do a relay with
everything involved. I think it wasdesigned by the players. It was designed
(53:04):
by the players. The players hada big say in what happened, and
I think that's that's the correct move. I heard it along, but was
better. It took a little Yeah, it was a little interest. They
had two performances mixed in there. They had two performances mixed in there,
which is whatever broke up the eventsa little bit. But yeah, no,
it was. It was engaging towatch. I I I'm not a
(53:27):
big fan of the skills competitions inthe past, but I thought this one
was was one of the best andmost recent memory good right direction? Then,
yeah, no, it's designed bythe players. You go. Gary
Bedman went to the players and said, what do you think we should do?
And that's what you were players.Well, I mean if McDavid designed
it or whatever, I don't care, as long as they got it right.
(53:50):
It was good. I liked it. That's good. I'm glad it
was better. I'm glad it wasbetter. Yeah. Are you ready for
three questions? Let's do it.It's time for three questions? All right?
I fired three of Blake last weekit is history, and this week
fire away. Who's the next dominoto fall? For the trade market?
(54:15):
Christanna, when do you think you'llget traded. Do you think it'll be
before the deadline or at the deadlineSaturday? I think he gets traded Saturday.
Yeah, yeah, I do.Who do you think he goes to
Toronto for what? Not? Aclue? Not a clue. I haven't
(54:38):
got that deep into it. Ifhe goes to Toronto, I don't know
how they fit it, though Ithink it would be well. I would
say half retaining the Calgary's owner hasnever retained in a single contract in the
history of the Calgary's astonishing. Itis astonishing that that's the case. I
(55:00):
could see if they retain Half,I could see definitely a first round pick
and maybe like Nick Robertson in theprospect be something like that. Yeah,
I could see Toronto as a fitfor sure, for sure. Question number
two, Who has bigger impact MonahannerLindholm? I think if you're a betting
(55:23):
man, you're a fool not tosay Lindholm right playing with better players?
No, I don't think he's playingwith better players. Winnipeg's freaking top six
is is statictin or he's playing withPatty and Eelers. Okay, well Elers,
I'll put Elers with I mean bettersince probably better than Eilers, but
(55:44):
I mean probably come on, comeon, but you know, you look
at it this way. Monahan's aI think, a quicker release in the
slot. Although yeah, no,he's great the bumper for sure. I
mean Lindholm can be can be realgood. I mean, I don't know
as a whole, probably Lindhile. What playoff matchup do you most want to
(56:06):
see as a fan? Mmmm?Well, I mean, you know,
I think you know a couple let'sstand out right away. I think a
Vancouver Vegas series. I remember thatbeing a hell of a battle a few
years ago, and I think Ithink a Vancouver Edmonton would be exciting as
(56:27):
hell. I think a Toronto TampaBay series would be fun. It's gone
to Loston, you know. Ithink there's a I think there's a potential
for quite a few really good battlesthis year. I mean, I really
believe it. I want to seewhere Dallas is out of here. Give
me a seck. Why does everybodykeep talking about Dallas. I don't understand
(56:52):
why everybody's so enamored with Dallas thisyear because they're not doing that well what
they're thirty thirty and six? BraI know, You're two points at the
first place in the division. Ido Why do they feel like they don't
do well? Why is it?Why? When I watch them, it
just there's seven too and one intheir last ten. I know, I
(57:13):
know they're not doing well. Hesaid, what the hell are you talking
about? I know a Dallas Winnipegseries would be unbelievable to watch two good
goaltenders. Oh yeah, oh yeah, Florida Tampa base Nah even like uh,
Winnipeg or Colorado. Like if Dallaswins the division, you get Winnipeg
Colorado first round. Let's just let'sjust face facts. Everybody in the West
(57:36):
is going to be fun to watch. Oh yeah. The narrative was,
oh my god, the East isso much stronger than the West. Not
a chance right now, not adamn chance, everybody. Everybody kicked down
the Pacific. Oh, it's theworst division in the league. No,
it's not. Are you joking me? Two of the hottest teams in the
(57:58):
league right now? Vancouver Rampton's samedivision right now? How how is it
the worst division in the league? Was that three questions? Uh? Yeah,
it was question listener, question, what is the present day ultimate power
play quarterback? Who is excuse me, Oh, is the present day ultimate
(58:19):
power play quarterback? I think it'sone, A, one B with Hughes
and mccarr. That's your that's yourgolden boys for the power play quarterback.
You can put Romaniosa into that. You can put Icekin into there. I
think the one and two would be. But Hughes and mccar, I mean,
just the way they can walk theline and change angles of the shots
and manipulate the passes and the lanes. And for the longest time, Hughes
(58:43):
wasn't really a thread up there becauseyou didn't he didn't have a shot developed.
Now he developed a shot, andnow you gotta respect Hughes up at
the top. You gotta respect mccar'sshot at the top. I mean,
yeah, I down, I wrotedown mccar, Hughes, Yosi, Heiskanen,
(59:04):
and fox Yep. Yeah, thatwould be Those would be my top
five as well. Yeah, youcan put it. You can put in
air Carlson maybe quarterback power play,Yeah, but also irrelevant three years from
now. Yeah, probably right, that will be my five for sure.
