(00:22):
Good you being Welcome to the DebateHockey Podcast. I'm the host of the
show, Brad Rude, joined alongsideof my co host Blake Friars, and
an interesting week in the National HockeyLeagueuse it was really not a lot of
news. It was just an oddweek where a ton of games were played,
but just not a lot of subsubstantial news that happened this week.

(00:44):
But lots to talk about and agood fund show ahead as we dive into
who are the true Cup contenders. Before we get to that, a couple
of stories I wanted to talk aboutstadium series. I've been ripping the schedule
maker all year, but I willgive them a little bit of credit.
For Sunday, there was no sportson literally nothing besides the NBA All Star

(01:11):
Game. I believe that was somethingthat's Saturday night or Sunday night. I
think, yeah, irrelevant. Itwas like two and fifty to ninety,
like some stupid, unrealistic, nonjust stupid but entertaining game one Sunday afternoon.
I thought it was I'm not abig outdoor game, but I didn't

(01:34):
think it was too bad and overtime, yeah, but it just the timing
of it. I guess is whatI'm probably giving the all. I mean
the I guess. I guess yougotta give them the praise and also rip
them for only avid one game onFriday, Like, I don't know what,

(01:56):
Like, what is going on withthat? What's a reason night Saturday
was stocked with every game? Soteam's gotta travel right, one game at
least fixing too, at least haveone in the at five and one at
eight. Don't just have one gameat five and then nothing. That's what
they do every Friday. That's weird. It's weird. No, because he'll

(02:20):
load Saturday because Saturday is supposed tobe the good day. But I'm still
I'm tired of these day games.I'm sick of the tired of day games.
And this president, it was ridiculous. It's just it's ridiculous. Like
we play the Canucks play today inMinnesota at one o'clock and then you gotta
go all the way over to Colorado. It's like, what on Minnesota to

(02:43):
Colorado is like an hour and fortyfive minute flight. Yeah, but a
day game into a into a andnow you're playing an elevation I don't know,
stop, you're playing in elevation. What are you talking about, Colorado?
Yeah, play, I don't knowwhatever is what it is? That

(03:04):
sounds like another Canucks excuse? Iswhat that sounds like? No, the
last the last two games, malliongone show. It's just got a ball
some adversity. Rather do it nowthen, Rather do it now than in
April in the first round of theplayoffs. Today it was some odd odd
scores. I've never I've never seena game of the guy. Let's just
say that. I, uh,guys, ten goals today, ten goals,

(03:30):
well two were empty nets. Butyeah, I think Capris of Capriz,
of Mike, get a little Mike, get a little visit from Vancouver
next time they play. Well, say that what the big tough Canucks.
There's nobody tough on the score racesto score an empty goal, to get

(03:51):
ten with two seconds left, Idon't know. I wasn't really a fan
of that, but it is whatit is. He didn't do anything about
it. I mean, it's theend of the game. Not We're not
gonna do something dumb and get suspended, right, so we're not not the
Leafs. But uh, five goalsin five minutes, Yeah, they I

(04:15):
guess I guess when you call outthe res publicly, they your return is
uh and Penley is the next game. That's not a coincidence. I mean
you you go look up, lookup the Elias Linda Penley today and look
it up. Is the big isbad? And let's just let's just say
this, watch on you a longtime. I've never seen I've never seen

(04:39):
a team get three five on threesin one game. Never don't don't do
the penalties. You know what I'mI'm you know, listen, I hate
to say this, like Vancouver fanswind ubout Toronto fans, and Toronto fans
are better than Vancouver fans. Vancouverfans are the biggest whiners in the league.
No, I'm just I'm just saying. There was a lot, there

(05:00):
was a lot of legit non legitpenalties, and it's just I just wanted
a consistent game. That's all Iwant, all right, all right,
it was actually a good game, ruined by ruined by a prey to the
penalty box as well. You'll neverget okay, I'm just saying I did
sing in one thing interesting in thisweek. The Tampa Bay Lightning come up

(05:21):
with third jerseys, right, hmmm, the Fargo Force of the United States
Hockey League. I've had this jerseyfor three years. That is literally the
exact copy of it. I mean, really, there's two There's no blue

(05:43):
stripe on the bottom. I mean, I I like Tapa's jerseys. I
like those like I just don't thinkthe hockey club needs to be on the
bottom, you know what I mean? Like, I just it just looks
weird. It just looks weird tome. Like what Like, I don't

(06:06):
like there's no hockey club on anyof the jerseys, you know what I
mean? All Right, moving on, we got a lot to talk about
on the show today. True Cupcontenders, kakalinon fired, Bennington's getting tough
again, Flames noise, deadline update, Wheeler injuried, and the Oats finally
did something right. With eight weeksto go until Stanley Cup playoff time,

(06:39):
who are the true Cup contenders thisyear? What teams can make noise in
the playoffs and actually bring home theStanley Cup. I don't think a number
of teams that are in that categoryare as high as what a lot of
people are talking about. Let's startin the East and talk about what teams
do you think out of the EasternConference can work their way through the long

(07:00):
playoff grind. Uh Boston, Boston, for sure, they always seem to
find a way obviously, Uh Gameseven, Uh first round disappointment last year
to Florida. I keep saying Carolina, like eventually they got a figure on

(07:21):
the playoffs. Eventually We've been pickinghim for a while to to go Bolton
and how are they going to getthrough this? I know? But like
Freddy Anderson is apparently skating, solike we'll see if that. If that
is Freddy Anderson this year, whenyou're dealing with blood clots like that,

(07:41):
he would have had to been playingnow for them to be feeling safe for
a strong playoff run, I wouldthink, I guess, I don't know
for sure, but I don't know. I wouldn't I wouldn't count on it.
Maybe you maybe you make a movefor Jake Allen's Jake Allen, I
mean, he's a year I meanI think, uh, I would rather

(08:05):
feel confident going into the playoffs withJake Gallen than uh Konchikov or Anti Ranta
at this point. Well, yeah, I would agree with that, but
I mean, is he gonna winyou a Stanley Cup. Well, I
mean it's a good team in frontof them, good defense. Uh,
their forwards are all responsibly responsible defensively. But I mean you look at you

(08:33):
look at the East. I meanit's everybody says I think there's three teams
that can come from the who's thethird one? I think Boston pretty clear.
I think the New York Rangers arefully capable. Now I'm a little
worried with some of the injuries theyhave just sustained. Yeah, but all
in all, a pretty strong groupthat have that have proven this year to

(08:58):
be playing pretty solid winners of sevena role here now. Uh. And
I also think the Florida Panthers andI and I almost think the Florida Panthers
could be a Stanley Cup favorite rightnow. Uh yeah, I mean they
got a lot of a lot ofdepth scoring. Sam Reinhart's breaking now,
he's on pace for fifty sixty goals. Obviously, they got a good goaltending

(09:20):
tandem. Their defense are big, they got good special teams. Yeah,
they're they're rolling right now for sure. But I would, uh, I
mean, we you can obviously kindof somewhat throw the leaves in there.
I guess. But I mean justbecause just because of the pedigree that they

(09:45):
have. But the pedigree that theyhave, like the like, not the
pedagree, like the team that theyhave, Like they have good team and
they have good players. We'll getgood players. But yeah, I don't
know. I'm not saying that theycan't win it, because as we've approven
over the years of the National HockeyLeague, anybody can win if they get

(10:05):
in. Florida just showed what canhappen if you just get it. Yeah.
But we talked about this a coupleof episodes. It wasn't like Florida
was a crappy team that just snuckin last year. They were a good
team that underachieved in the regular season, right, big difference. They weren't
oh four Calgary who had no businessmaking the playoffs and then go on and
went on a run. You know. There. They were a team that

(10:28):
was a solid team but just underachievedall year and snuck in on the last
day. You know what I mean. I look at Toronto and I and
yeah, I mean I think they'rea decent hockey team. Are they capable
if everything came together and the starsaligned for them? Absolutely? They are
I questioned a lot of things onthat team, but I don't know.

(10:50):
It's crazier things have happened, Iguess. But I just think right now,
if I had to place my money, it'd be on Boston, New
York or Florida. Yeah, Floridaprobably being the most difficult, difficult team
to play in the playoffs. Theyare built playoff ready boy, that's way

(11:11):
yea to so mean strong. They'vegot everything. I mean, they've been
getting a lot of things working intheir favor but you know, time,
time will tell. Here we're stilleight weeks away, but they would be
my favorites right now. In theWestern Conference, I think there is it's

(11:35):
a little more open in the West. I think I have two favorites,
uh, Colorado. I know oneof them is Colorado and I and I
almost hesitate slightly because why do Ifeel like Colorado struggled this year and there's

(11:56):
still put up seven all. Imean, they're still It's crazy. They're
they're a team that that it's crazy. They know they can turn it on
that at the right time. Rightit's like a water faucet. I mean,
they struggle a little bit, thenthey turn it on and rattle off
eight of ten and whatnot. Soobviously got through Ydminton in there. Because

(12:18):
Edmonton is just they find a wayI guess they can. They outscore the
playoffs as well. That's that's theproblem, Like that's skinners played better lately.
Right at moments though, It's likeyou know, and you know,
remember when Edmonton went on that bigrun and then of course everybody in social
media posted, well they were, you know, zero games against the top

(12:41):
ten teams in the league. AndI'm sure you've seen the graphic everybody,
if you're on social media at all, you've seen the graphic. But and
I kind of blew that graphic offand just said, hey, it's still
sixteen sixty and like, yeah,it's not so impressive. Yeah, but
it's been stumble bumble lately. Theywin today against Arizona. They were down
three too, and I checked hedid not see. I worry a little

(13:07):
bit about this team. Not notthat they can't do it, because I
mean they're fully loaded offensively, theirdefense has been better this year. Their
goaltending I still worry about, butI just I they're so the playoffs are
such a different game where it's notso score your It's it's way harder to

(13:28):
score your way out of trouble inthe postseason than it is the regular season.
Yeah, they have they Like Isaid in the past, I think
Paul Coffee's definitely helped that defense core. He's helped Nick Nurse a lot,
has made some made some strides defensively. I I still like them to add
a depth de mend I mean they'rereally only true defenseman is echom right.

(13:52):
I mean, I mean, Iguess see he's okay in a third pair.
But I don't mind Cecie at all. I don't. No, I
think he gets a lot of badrap for from that market, uh,
because of his contract. But it'sit's like it's like Myers in Vancouver.
If Myers just getting paid three millionbucks, nobody would say anything about him.

(14:15):
He was solid Myers. Myers hasjust been played in the wrong position,
right, wrong role, Yeah, wrong role. I mean you can't
take him and be like, well, just because we paid this guy this
amount of money, he's going tobe a one too. He's not a
one too. Yeah, he's afive six. He's a very good five
to six. Yeah, play himin that position, yeah, ship,

(14:37):
you're paying him. I mean MilanLucia because he was grossly overpaid, but
he wasn't put on the first linewe first year advant did. He played
McDavis quite a bit, but yeah, I was trying to that was did
it work? Let me ask youthat, No, I think he had
eighteen goals. Say, Patty Maroonsomehow has drive at mcgea. Maroon is

(15:00):
twice the hockey player Milon Lucis.Oh, I think so. Yeah,
Alan Lucia was fine. And thenwhen he hit a brick wall, he
hit a brick wall. Yeah, that guy. Hey, that guy had
a stretch though. That guy hada stretch from about twenty eleven to twenty

(15:22):
fifteen maybe or he was one ofthe best power forwards in the game.
Yeah, and then he his bodysigned the signed the contract, and I
mean he's got a lot He hada lot of wear on the tires already.
So it's hard. It's hard toplay. It's hard to play that
effected for that long. No Is, well, he's yeah, I know
a lot of guys have done it. Patrick Maroon has done it, right

(15:46):
when you think about it, Yeah, Patrick Maroon didn't look a whole lot
different from when he started to now. No, he's old. He's just
old. Yeah, but he hasn'the hasn't drastically slowed down. You put
them on luciach out his first yearversus his last year. Big yeah,

(16:07):
he's slowed out a lot. Asfar as teams in the West that I
would Colorado obviously, I've struggled allyear with putting Dallas in this category and
I still don't know that I can. But everybody tells me they're good.
Dude, that that's crazy talk.Because if you look at the athletic right

(16:27):
now and you look at their graphicon hu will win the Stanley Cup,
the Dallas Stars are the number onepick, Edmonton's two, Florida's three.
Now they're buying stock and a JakeGoinger smart men right there. I mean,
I don't know if you can gowrong with that. Jake andre Is
like you saw him play a coupleof years ago against the Flames in the

(16:51):
first round. I mean that thatwas honestly one of the best first round
matchups for gold tam I've ever seenMark Treman. They had both had like
nine to fifty Saper saying this isnice. It was unbelievable. It was
one of the Yeah, probably oneof the biggest goaltending battles I've ever seen.
Yeah, in a playoff series andI went seven games, so there's

(17:12):
a treat to watch. Yeah, obviously, uh, obviously you have to
talk about Vancouver here, But likeI put Winnipeg and Vancouver in the same
category. Yeah, could it happen? Yeah? Am I putting money on
it? Hell? No, Vegas. I actually give Vegas a pretty well

(17:37):
Vegas has to play Edmonton first roundbarring unbelievable collapse by that kind, or
are we putting Edmonton in Vegas inthe into the well? They they're both
an they're got to play each otherin the first round though, Like that's
yeah, yeah, you can't writethem off, right, No, you
can't write them off. I wouldYeah, Van Kings, I wouldn't want

(18:02):
to sign up for that Kings haveThe Kings haven't been like they've been.
Oh, they've been better lately, but it's like, how long can Dave
Riddick keep playing like this? Likethat's that would be my biggest storry for
me. I got a feeling thatthe La Kings will go get a goalie
who Mark I don't know. Idon't know right now. Who But who's

(18:29):
out there right now? It's FlurryAllan, Mark Strong not they They won't
trade Indivision. I highly doubt that. No, not with that much term.
Not with that much term. Idon't do. If you if you
get what you want, I don'tcare. If they traded with Vancouver and
Division, No, I know, but goaltending is just go they pay.

(18:52):
They traded two penning uf as,not a guy with not a guy with
two years left. So yeah, that's uh, that would be very interesting
to see if that actually happened. The Kings uh kind of depleted their system
in that Vallardi du Bois deal, like that was the wrong guy to to

(19:18):
unload your your future on. Likeyou traded, you traded Vallardi, who's
breaking out? You traded? Ifollow you traded a first round pick,
you traded another prospect, like Ithink. I think that if they had
to do over, they would theywould have targeted somebody else. Easy to
say right now, though, Yeah, but I haven't said this about Dubois
the last two years. I agree, I agree completely, But you know

(19:41):
what, I agree, I agreewith everything you're saying there. But if
something happens and this team goes ona run in the playoffs and Dubois plays
well, people are gonna forget thatimmediately. I get they will forget it
immediately until the next year starts tolike it doesn't matter if for seven years,

(20:03):
it doesn't matter if they win, doesn't it doesn't matter if they win.
But I don't see l A.I don't see l A winning.
I don't. I don't think theygot it in them right now. I
put them. I put them inthe category of Winnipeg and Vancouver on the
lower end. I would have thema little. I have a tier below,

(20:26):
I have a tier below I have. I would have Colorado and Vegas
probably in Tier one. Edmonton,uh forgetting Dallas, No, Iminton in
Dallas and Tier two, then Vancouverand and Winnipeg in Tier three, and

(20:47):
then and then uh, what's itcalled l A in Tier five. That's
all I would Yeah, you justkind of underestimate Vegas. They always they
always see the way you're gonna havejack Cha calling back in the playoffs too.
So it's gonna be interesting to seewhat happens with that team. But

(21:07):
I we forgot to mention, likewhat Tapa's gonna do with all his cast
space like that's that's also they alsogot a freed up eight and a half
million bucks to play with now,so they can go out and target target
somebody big if they wanted to,Right, So what do they here?
Okay, here's the problem with Tampa. I agree with you, but you

(21:30):
can't buy players. You have togive them something, and they have nothing
to give. Well, I meanthey don't. They have their They had
out their first round picks like Caddie, so that wouldn't be surprising if they
did that. But eventually you gottastart building for the future. Yeah,
I mean they want they want twocops. I mean they could go get

(21:51):
Noah Hanafin right now. But whatdo you But what do they have enough
to give? Do they have?I think Calgary is gonna hold hold out
for a king's ransom for him.I mean I would, he's a he's
a really good defenseman. Well youtake highest better, right, I mean
you can't hold out forever and thennot. Well yeah, but they're like

(22:11):
I think I think I think Calgarywill do well on on Halifan, like
I think I will make a prettyI think they're gonna surprisingly do better on
Tanna than they do on on Hanason. No, nobody's offering time of a
first right now, Like, Idon't know if you're getting good Okay,
if you're not. I so ifyou think they're getting a better offer than

(22:34):
Hannifan than Hannafan for Tanava, youdon't think they're gonna get first and going
for that right now? I don'tknow. I I don't know. I
mean, would you trade if you'reokay, let me ask you this question.
If you're Vancouver, would you tradefor him? I can't because but
they don't because they don't even cap. But hypothetical, who would I rather
have? Well, you'd rather probablyare asking me, I'd rather have tan

(22:57):
Well, you'd rather have Tanna? For this year? You'd obviously want a
twenty seven year old defenseman over ChrisTanna for sure. Right. But but
what I'm saying is I guess letme rephrase the question. Hannafin is a

(23:18):
huge asset that could bring a hugereturn if the team acquiring him knows that
they'll be able to sign him.Yeah, okay, see I am.
I'm not one hundred percent from this, but in the last three days I'm
getting more feelings based on conversations thatHannafan's gotted down to, like, Hey,

(23:41):
like I'm resigning next year with oneof these two teams. Well,
I read something today about Tampa.Well, Tampa's been in not in conversation,
Tampa's been rumored to be interested. That's as far as that. Well,
yo, you'll get more and Ithink you'll get more in a train
if there's a if there's just likeit's a if there's an extension in place

(24:04):
in my opinion, but I don'tthink. I don't think that that's gonna
happen, like if Calgary was ifCalgary allowed had been in his agent to
have forty eight hours to negotiate acontract with Tampa. I think I think
we always talk about these sign andtrades, you know, and what have
we seen one to all? CouldChuck? I mean, that's a private

(24:25):
they might they got yeah, butI know I understand that. But you
got a lot more back that Ithink with an extension that you would have
without it, for sure, butthat that can culminate easier in the off
season than it can on deadline day. Well, and he's depending you a
face, so there's that you're onthe clock too, So Yeah, they're

(24:48):
in a tough spot. They canthey uh be interesting? How hoigh they
unfold because they were they were whatthey were knocking on the door. They
were knocking on the door of aplayoff spot. And then they lose four
in a row. Nowther what sixback, five back did they win today?
They won six to three over theJets today, sick Calgary six mon

(25:10):
hanf three eh yeh. Seems towork like that, So three back of
the playoffs. But I mean you'retrading hannifin and tena like is the playoffs
really in hope? I mean,I mean, if you're Calgary and you
can and you can sell off andget guys back that a help you now

(25:36):
and help you in the future andstill push and be semi competitive. That's
that's the goal. Honestly. Ithink there's you know, everybody in Calgary
is talking about Tanavan Hannafan. Ithink there's a whole lot more people available.
I think Majra Pawi is available.I think Kuzmenko's for sure available.
I think there's more available. I'mnot saying there's some off the whole team.

(26:00):
I'm just saying for the right price. Yeah, like anybody's available,
right right, I I do.I think it's out of the question for
them to get rid of Hanaffin andtanav and still make the playoffs. Probably
not, It's probably doubtful, butprobably not. But one other thing that
it's probably been not talked about enoughis I don't think Calgary is just I

(26:27):
mean, you can. You canonly load up on so many draft picks,
and all draft picks are education educatedhopes right there, Lottery tickets.
Lottery tickets is what they are.You can only load up on so many
of those. I think Calgary isbetter served and and honestly think that they
are actually looking for roster ready youngplayers more than they're looking for draft picks.

(26:52):
If Calgary is smart, they tradeHannafin for a twenty three twenty four
year old centerman or a winger oranother defenseman, something along those lines that
can that can play in your teamright now. I agree, couldn't agree

(27:12):
more. But those are not alwayseasy to find. Teams are not like
lining up to give those out.Yeah, see teams. You know,
we always talk about how teams arehesitant to give out first round picks,
and they are, But I personallywould rather give out a later first round
pick than a guy that I alreadyhave, that I already know in my

(27:36):
system is doing well because the pickis a pick. Yeah, and you
can look back at those draft picksten years ago or ten years from now
and say, oh, can youbelieve they traded that draft pick? Oh,
you can look at So there's oneexample of a guy that was really
good that you gave away, Butthere's probably fifty draft picks that we don't
talk about that weren't right. Well. You see, I'm always on,

(28:00):
like, if you're a contender,I'm always on trade your picks and trade
your prospects for help now. Imean, because you gotta take advantage of
you gotta take advantage of windows.I mean, is a twenty twenty six
second round pick going to help younow or is it gonna help you four
years down the road when he maybemakes the NHL. I'm fine with that

(28:21):
theory, and I think most generalmanagers would agree with that, But you
can't deplete the cupboards down, No, for sure, you can't make them
like I think. I think Tampamay maybe depleted theirs down a little too
far. You got to the cups. Yeah, but Okay, I mean,
I mean it's a little easier toswallow as a as an organization when

(28:44):
you win. So so let's saylet's say Vancouver goes three years now and
doesn't win. Maybe he has somegood runs, maybe has some good runs
to wings. Yeah, but yourfan base isn't gonna say that that happened
like that. That's listen, man. The last the last decade that I've
been through as a fan was miserable, and I hope I never have to

(29:07):
go through that, through that somethinglike that again. The fact that the
fact that now like this team istaking swings and making big moves is probably
waiting for this for ten years. So like, you can't, you can't.
You can't. What's the old saying, you can't have your cake and
eat it too, Like that's youcan't have it both ways. You're either

(29:30):
you're either you're either you want togo all in or you just want to
stand pat and just see what happens. You got to get aggressive. I
think you have to go all in. I agree with you. I just
I still think you have to bekind of savvy on the back end though,
and whether it's signing some US collegefree agents and and I think you

(29:52):
need to be savvy and making surethat you have some security blanket back there,
you know what I mean. Andthey last year, I think they
signed four college free agents last year, so I think they got a couple.
I think they got a couple ofcards open right now too. I
think they got a couple uh rosterspots available for just in case something comes

(30:15):
along the road. But before wemove on, so about a month ago,
you said you think that Zadoroff willbe resigned. Now do you say
that I told you the lind Homeepisode that he was probably not going to
be a get resigned. Yeah,I think they're gonna. I think they're
gonna prioritize signing lind homeover Zadora forsure. I don't think it's been a

(30:41):
good fit. He's been a goodfit with with person. We'll see how
the offseason goals, to see ifthey can get Petterson signed right probably probably
number one. That's priority number onefor sure. Time to go around the
league after eleven years general out asgeneral manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

(31:11):
I surprised. I don't know.I can't say I'm surprised. I mean,
obviously they're like the thirty first rankedteam in the league right now,
maybe even thirty second. I guessit could be. He was there that
long. He is there eleven years, and I still think that when you
look at his track record, hedid a lot of good things with not

(31:34):
a lot of help. No,like he had that one year where they
traded for Dushane and they traded Uh. He did a lot of guys say
I'm not playing here anymore, right, Yeah, and that's tough. He
was able to sign a lot ofplayers that people didn't expect him to sign.

(31:55):
Goodrow was one of them. Yeah. I don't know if they would
want to do that over again ifthey had to do. You think that's
a good question if if today thatcontract was in front of them, would
they sign that? Well, Imean it's it's easy to say now that
he's struggled. Mighty lease. No, I'm not saying they wouldn't. I'm

(32:20):
just saying would they or wouldn't they? I don't know, probably probably probably
would they Probably would. I meanhundred point players don't come around in free
agency very often, right, Soyeah, it'd be it'd be interesting they
brought in line. They brought inline a who is uh had some issues.

(32:45):
But I'm trying to think who elsethey bring in that one year.
I'm pretty sure he traded for Bebroski, if I'm not mistaken too from from
UH Philly think he brought him inthere. I'm trying to think, what
else you know? And I guesswhen I look at it, I look

(33:07):
at you know, you look atthe success of Columbus and it hasn't been
a lot of things to write homeabout. So if you graded on that
sked scale, he'd probably not begraded so well. But when I when
you look at I just always goback to the boy. With what he
had to work with. He seemedto work some deals out. And now
I see John Davidson will be theinterim general manager, and I feel like

(33:29):
every time I hear about John Davidson, he's an interim general manager. Yeah,
He's just the thing that sticks outfor me from his tenure was would
obviously be sweeping the record breaking uhT have a Bay first round, right,
That's probably the highlight of his tenure. That's unfortunate. Unfortunately, that's

(33:53):
the only thing that really sticks outto me from the eleven years that he
was there, because I did thinkhe did some good things there, but
uh, like you mentioned, justnot many, not many guys wanna lining
up to go to go to Columbusin the in the off season or or
or they're on their no trade tradelist. So so Jordan Bennington is back

(34:17):
out of again. He's fined fivethousand dollars the other day for high sticking
National's Luke. That's a that's alike who who got hi sticked? Luke
Ingvillista? Is that right? Oh? Yeah, I don't know how to
say that name, but uh,that's a it's a polite way of saying

(34:40):
dirty butt end. I guess itwas brutal. I would have I would
have gave him a game, tobe honest, I had not three games.
But if a player butt end,let me ask you this, the
player spirit somebody, it's probably fourgames. I know it's the same thing.
But ended somebody in the face likethat he's gonna get some games.

(35:00):
I feel like yeah. And itwas like it was like it was he
looked at him coming around the netand oh it was so like, how
the how did the ref miss that? You say? Right at I don't
know, I don't even want toget it. Know why, I think,
I don't know. I don't know. So the deadline, the deadline

(35:22):
is getting closer and closer every singleday, and I sit and I look
at teams like Calgary holding the keys. We talked a little bit about this
earlier, and we won't go awhole lot more into it, but I
sit and I look and see, well, what's gonna happen with them?
And then we've talked about teams thatneed goalies. And then Gibson goes down

(35:43):
injured, and then Wheeler now goesout with a really really gruesome bad injury
for the Rangers, which that's that'shorrible to see that happen, that that
sadly could be could be career ending, you know. So now they have
holes in their lineup, and JakeGetsel gets hurt, and I mean he'll

(36:07):
be back right like a few daysafter deadline, but it just seems like,
I mean a lot of teams lookingfor defenseman, a lot of teams
looking for goalies, no goalies reallyout there, and then guys getting hurt,
and that puts you into question,Well, Holland is Calgary and play
Hannifin and Hannam do they sit themdo you not sit them? Does that

(36:28):
hurt their stock? If you sitthem? You know, what's the lightning
going to do? Since Sergachev's gone, and and and the Oilers are kind
of they're probably locked in. They'reprobably stuck with their team. So when
do the ball start falling? Isit going to be a busy deadline or
is it gonna be busy lead deadline? If Calgary smart, they get their
business done before the deadline, Likethey've done a pretty good job of doing

(36:52):
that, right They've traded the dooroff well before the deadline. They traded
Lynn Holme before the deadline. Ithink that's a good pattern to continue doing.
I think you get more. Youmight you might get more if you
wait for teams to get super desperate. But I mean, like you said,
Kandas one block shot away from breakinghis damn leg. I hate to

(37:13):
say it, that are breaking yourfoot or or taking one off the face
and breaking a jaw, Like that'sjust the type of guy he is,
right So yeah, he always be, He always be. He probably wins
if you're a Flames fan every timeyou Avengers out blocks a shot. But
I mean, he's not gonna stopplaying that way. That's just he's just

(37:35):
a warrior. That's just what hedoes. So yeah, I think they'll
go wait a little bit on uhOn Hannafan, I think I think you
could create like a bidding war forhim almost. But I think Boston or
Tapa is gonna get Hannifan. That'smy prediction. I just look at the
cap space available though, and I'mlike, oh, man, you could

(38:00):
trade if you could trade Hanafin too. Do you think Boston would part with
that Portois? I don't think so. No, do you think they would?
I mean, if you're getting likeTanev and tnav and like Madupani,
maybe or you think I definitely theycan't afford both of those guys. But

(38:25):
you have to get a contract comingback. But there's gonna have to be
some teams to get creative and havea third team involved in retaining salaries and
and whatnot. We've seen that. We've seen that the last few years with
this flat cap. So yeah,it'll be it'll be interesting to see.
Obviously, I've said this along thelongest time that Calgary holds all the cards,

(38:49):
and that's just that's just what itis. That's kind of the balls
in their court right now, seewhat they do with it type thing.
Last week and probably of the twohundred and forty five shows we've done,
about two hundred and twelve we've bitchand complained about the Arizona Coyotes. But
I do have one thing that Ihave to give them credits on. They

(39:09):
develop their own app now where.Because of the Bally's Sports debacle, they've
teamed up with Script Sports, whichis doing a lot of they are is
doing the Vegas games too, Butthey have their own app now where you
can buy it called Coyotes Central costeleven ninety nine a month, or twenty
four to ninety nine for the restof this season, and you get all

(39:30):
the games, you get pre andpostgame shows, exclusive footage. It's like
find someone who's dealing with the problemsof the bally Sports just said all right,
I'm gonna take this in arrow handsand we're gonna fix the problem for
our fans. I thought that wasa that the Oats did there. Yeah,
that's that's awesome. That's really good. All right, let's let's go.

(39:53):
Time for three questions. It's timefor three questions. Last week I
fired three questions at Blake it ishis turn this week to fire three questions
at me. Let a rip MasonMorelli with his first goal tonight or today?

(40:15):
I guess what do you remember fromhim growing up watching him and my
not Let's talk a little bit aboutthat I was gonna do at the end
of the show. Let's do itnow. Mason Morelli been friends with his
dad, Matt, for well forever, and Mason grew up. He lives
just about a block and a halffrom me. My son played hockey with

(40:37):
his younger brother, Mason. Goodkid, as good a kid as you're
gonna find. And he gets acall up on Saturday to the Vegas Golden
Knights and gets into the lineup todayhas a goal and assist in his very
first game. His whole family wasTherero's fun see, and his mom and
his dad, his brother's sister andgrandma, his uncle and aunt and one
of his cousins was there. Andyeah, just a real cool story.

(41:00):
His dad played for the University ofNorth Dakota's grandpa played for the University of
North Dakota and won overtime goal innineteen fifty nine to win the national championship
for North Dakota. Mason went onto play well. Mason played up until
his junior high school hockey in inMan not and then went on to play

(41:21):
a year for the minum minu ofToros of the North American Hockey League.
I saw a graphic today, scoreda goal. His first goal for the
Toros was eleven years ago, whichis a crazy road ahead. And then
he went on to play for theFargo Force. After the Fargo Force,
he went to the University of Omahaand played in Nebraska and the NCCHC Division
One hockey. Had a really goodcareer there. Then he went on and

(41:45):
did some played it for a coupleof EHL teams. I don't have any
Calgary's organization for a little bit, signed as a free agent and played two
years I believe for the Stockton Heatin the Calgary organization, and then went
on and signed with the Hirshey Onhe went and played for one year with

(42:06):
Pitt Oh you didn't he went. Then he went to Then he went to
Hershey, I believe, and playeda couple of years in Hershey. Last
year won a Calder Kupp and Hersheyand then signed a two way deal with
the Vegas Golden Knights this summer andfinally got his call up today and it
was about three quarters of the waythrough the first period. He was on

(42:29):
the power play and which is whichis crazy and was able to uh score
a really nice goal, but hada all around really good game. Uh
a lot of fun, got alot of good got a lot of good
press and good vibes from the Vegasfans and everything, and uh yeah,
well what a story. But thepart that makes me the happiest for him
is Mason's the kind of kid thattakes everything in stride. He's real,

(42:55):
humble, doesn't play the big timeshow thing. He was actually in mine
not last week watching the West RegionHigh school hockey tournament down to Earth,
just you know, shaking hands withthe kids, and uh, quite honestly,
most of the little kids in mine, I got a rude awakening today
because they just think Mason's their buddy, right, they don't realize And then

(43:17):
today they see him on TV scoringfor the Vegas Golden Knights. When when
Mason comes home again, now it'sgoing to be a whole different story.
But uh, I know one thingabout Mason when he does come home to
mine. Not the first thing hewill do is uh be there for the
little kids and and and and treatthem great because he's always done that.
Yeah, craziest game you've ever beento live, Hm boy, NHL are

(43:46):
all Hockey? Oh, craziest gameyou want to know. The craziest scenario,
sure, Madison Square Garden, Philly, New York Rangers Colton Lore grabbed

(44:08):
who the hell was it from Philly, a tough guy that was smaller for
Doric and suckered him about a minuteinto the game off of a face off,
suckered him in the face and knockedhim out. And crazy, craziest

(44:28):
back and forth game. Yeah.Unfortunately, in nineteen ninety three, I
watched Winnipeg in like the second tolast game in the old Winnipeg Arena.
I watched Winnipeg come from behind andscore four goals in the final six minutes.
Ka Chuck had the hat trick andShane Doane capped it off, I

(44:52):
believe, and with Nikolai, Hobbyboolin and net beat the Flames. That
wasn't real cool, but was anexciting wild game, I guess. I
uh one of the I remember beingin Vancouver and I think it was like
two thousand and nine. John Tavaresnineteen year old kid six point game.

(45:15):
That was. That was. Thatwas probably the coolest thing I've seen.
It's crazy. Yeah, it waslike I think it scoes like seven seven
five seven four and had like sixpoints. I got to meet him after
the game too, is super cool. Yeah, that was. That was
probably the craziest for me. Ohyeah, last question, Austin Matthews.

(45:36):
Now, are Primal Vechkin better goalscorer? Oh better goal scorer? Uh?
You know it's funny because they thissounds crazy to say this. It's hard
to say right now, but Ithink people would say more. People would
say Ovechkin than Matthews, And Idon't know necessarily think that's the right answer.

(46:00):
But the reason they would say itis because a Vegans scored so many
of his goals from a signature move. Yeah, right, so that gets
ingrained into people's heads, whereas Matthewskind of does it every which way possible.
He figures out a way to score. Yeah, so I probably would

(46:22):
say Matthews. Way back in theday, you said Line was the better
guy than Matthews, but I probablyWell, I think Line could be if
he really gave a shit, yeah, like I really, But let me
ask you this question. If Isaid to you in the last decade,

(46:45):
name me one player that had thetalent to do wonderful things but never quite
figured out how to do it.Patrick Lion would be in your top five.
You're probably right, You're probably right. But honestly, man, the
way that Matthews keeps going, likehe's got forty eight goals in like fifty

(47:08):
two games, it's just an incrediblepace, Like he's on pace fighting for
like seventy eight goals or something like, which is we haven't seen in a
long time, right, so we'llsee. It would be interest to see
if he can score eighty, LikeI don't think we'll see. I mean,

(47:28):
dude, he yes, six goalsthe last two games. Like this
is the way this guy is scoringnow is off the charge. I mean,
I'm not saying he can't do,but he's not going to be able
to have any slow streaks at all, which is really tough to do coming
down the stretch. All. Imean, I just feel like he scores
every damn game. I don't know. That's my three for you. That

(47:50):
was two questions. No craziest gameA rally and yeah that was all right,
listener, question ready. Nashville playersplan to leave Saint Louis and goes
straight to Vegas early for their game. The players wanted to go to the
YouTube concert at the Sphere. Headcoach Andrew Burnette pulled the plug on their
plans and canceled their trip due topoor play. Is this a good coaching

(48:14):
move? Yeah? Probably, Imean, you can't just let the players
run wild and do whatever they want. I mean, if they although it
would be a good bonding event forsure. I'm back and forth in this.
Okay, I'm old school. Ithink you earn these things, right,
Like, I see it both ways. But here's the thing. I've

(48:36):
also heard versions of the story thatit was that the players were taking in
the staff to this m So arewe penalizing? And if that's true,
then are we penalizing the staff orthe players? I mean, obviously the
players wanted to go too. Soyeah, I don't know, Like it's
one of those things like I'm asold school as you can get, and

(48:59):
for me to say this, Ikind of I feel like I'm gonna have
a seizure or something. But Idon't know that this is like a hill
to die on, and I thinkmaybe it would have been in the best
interest of the future if you hadjust let him went to the YouTube concert.
Yeah, that's probably gonna lose myold school card for that. But

(49:22):
I don't know. I think there'shills to die on, and I don't
think that this is a hill forNashville to die on right now that I
could back. Yeah, we'll see. I guess you two at the spirit
all right. Last week we hadhonestly one of the quietest weeks I could

(49:42):
ever remember for NHL News. Westill figure it out a tossup to talk
to do it every week. We'lldo the same next week, although next
week I got a feeling there'll besome moves. I just I don't think.
I don't think it's in the bestmentfor a lot of these teams push
us out too far. From thatbeing said, I think some moves will

(50:06):
be made. We'll see all usup. Talk to all. Though enjoyed
this week's hockey action, We're backnext Tuesday with a new show, great
