Speaker 1 (00:22):
Welcome to Downtown. Walks about iland tens to this media.
I am ready John. And on this episode of The
Downtown we talked to Anthony Andre from a Do It
for Durret. We talk all about the two events happening
this year, what you can buy at the auction, and
so much more. This is such fun conversation. Anthony is
back on the show promoting Do It for Drret. This
is their tenth year. I can't believe it's been that long.
(00:44):
That's exactly what it is. So you are not gonna
want to miss these two events happening this Friday, November seventh.
You don't want to hear it from me, you want
to hear from him. So, without further ado, here is
Anthony Andro with do It for Durreat. I would like
to welcome to the show or back to the show,
I should say, Anthony Andro with do It for Dirret?
How are you doing it? Sir?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Just fine?
Speaker 1 (01:05):
So do It for Dirt is celebrating being around for
a decade this year. Congratulations, by the way, Well thanks,
did you you know obviously after year one? Did you
imagine you know, ten years down the line, you guys
would still be doing this.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
No, I don't think we ever thought that. You know,
we did the first one to try to help Kelly
Durrett and Richard's wife and their family, and we raised
about a little over two hundred thousand dollars I think
that first night, and we tried to think about afterwards,
like how can we kind of keep this going? And
Kelly was a big driver in that, and so.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
We started our foundation.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
And yeah, ten years is gone by, and this is
our ninth or tenth event because we had to take
a year off for COVID, our ninth or tenth big event.
We've had smaller ones along the way, and you know,
we've raised more than two and a half million dollars
and helped a lot of family is along the way.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
That's insane. Well, can you what's some of the highlights
for you you get ten years in? Like, what's some
of the highlights?
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, you know that we did one that was an
A and M.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
We helped an Aggie family, so as an Aggie that
was that was a cool one. And I think that
was twenty nineteen. That was a family he lost his wife,
she died, never left the hospital. They had a baby
in so he ended up raising that child that that
event stuck out to me just because the significance of
that one. But you know, we've had so many cool events.
(02:35):
The first one we did with Texas Scott Talent where
Elvis Andris and Rugnette d'Or were dancing around in costume.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
And Tony Beef was singing.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
And Randy Rogers was one of our judges that year,
and even the year that we helped the A and
M family. That's the first time Josh Abbott came to
one our events. And he didn't come to he didn't
come to sing, he didn't come to anything. He came
just because he wanted to be part of the event.
So he just sat there as a spectator and we
ended up auctioning him off that night. We're actually he
(03:06):
end up playing Billie Bobs later that year and he's like,
I know, what's gonna want to be on me? I
think we're raised like two thousand dollars just by him
being there and putting together a package with him pretty
much on the spot.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I mean, speaking of Josh Abbott, he is playing your
event this year, He's playing the night time portion. I'll
ask about who's in the golf tournament in the morning,
but you guys have a golf tournament starting the day
at nine am, which people can still buy tickets and
preserve their spot if they want to. And then that night,
you guys are hosting your big event with an auction
at eight pm at Texas Live with Josh Abbott playing.
(03:39):
Tell us about all these things. This is amazing.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, So the big, the big night cap is so
our doors open at six. The DJ, DJ Chris Stats
are the DJ who for all the Rangers games, the
home games. If you've been to Globe Life, you've seen
Chris out there. He's going to be the DJ for
our event. So doors open at six.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
We're gonna have.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
A huge silent auction that will actually go live. It'll
be live over a week before that event, and we'll
have a we have one hundred and twenty something items
right now in the silent auction, and then we will
also have a live auction. So Josh Abbott will go
on about eight o'clock, we'll break, he'll do a break
about eight thirty, we'll do some auctions, we'll do a
(04:20):
live auction there joshavia to go back on and do
another set. I think he's playing between ninety one hundred
and twenty minutes him.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
And his band.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
It's a full set. It's a full concert. And that's
just the nightcap. We start the day grape Vine Golf
Course with at nine am. We have the entire golf
course to ourself. It's twenty seven holes. We expect to
run one hundred and sixty golfers there. So we're given
you a full day. If you don't like golf, will
you come to the concert. If you do like golf,
(04:49):
we'll come to the golf. If you want to come
to both, well please we want you have both of
those things too.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Right, yeah, I mean just in case you get night plans,
you can do the golfing. And if you get you know,
warning plans or you're not a golfer, go to the
night like it's great.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah. So you said you've got about one hundred and
twenty items. I know one of the ones that's going
to go probably for the most money is a Chili's
meal with with Mike Reiner and Michael Gruber, former guests
of the show. How did you lock down that one specifically?
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Well, that's that's a beaut groups has been so good,
does he? I don't know if you've seen him out
he wears do it for Dirret stuff all the time.
All these guys do, and it's our we don't. We
don't pressure anybody. It's pretty laid back, but they don't
say no to us. So it was like, hey, you
want to text groups and see I was like yeah, sure,
So I just sent him a text and he said, yeah,
(05:41):
Ryan's is out of town right now, let me check
back on Monday. And sure enough, he texts me back
Monday and they'll be there and doing that we've done.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
We've done that one before.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
We did that one about five years ago when the
Chilis Groups thing was taken off, I think, and it
went crazy there and we of course social media picks
those kinds of stuff things up. Chili's picks those kinds
of things up. So uh, it's it's amazing what we're
able to put together. It was the same thing with
Jared Sandler, right, Jared has his own his own charity event.
(06:11):
You know, he's the radio guy and he's done some
TV for the Rangers, and Jared can't be at the
event this year. But it's like, hey, what what can
I do? What can we help you with? So Jared
put together a package. Evan Grant, Hey, Evan put together
a package. So these guys just they just do it
for us, and uh, it's it's it's always cool because
they're they're very self deprecating, right, they don't think that
(06:31):
anybody's anybody's gonna want to bid on their stuff. But
I'm like, Jared, you you're taking to You're coming to
the ballpark. You meet you, Eric Nadell, Matt Hicks, You'll
sit in the booth for an inning. You'll have dinner
with you there. Same thing with Chuck Morgan. Right, We've
got Chuck Morgan lined up for a package this year too. Uh,
We've we've got a lot of pool things. The Live
(06:53):
Auction has got some new things, new things for us
this year that we're super excited about.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
The Rangers related to.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Well, tell us about this, what do you Well, you.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Know, Corey Seeger is on board this year for the
first time. Right, So Corey will do you will be
able to go to a game, go to the you'll
sit in the Lexus Club, but before the game, you'll
go down you'll watch VP as a guest at Corey's
and then he will sign stuff for you. So that's
we've locked that one down. We've got Elvis andres right,
(07:25):
So Elvis. Elvis was at our second event and our
third event, the Texas Got Talent and the Eighties Night,
and so Elvis is gonna do hitting lessons.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
You'll do hitting lessons with Elvis. Uh, so we've done.
It's just those kinds.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Of things that kind of organic and it's uh, you know,
Koby Lewis will be there, Derek Hollins is going to
be there. Derek, he's gonna be at our golf and
Derek but well, he hurt his arm again. So Derek
was opposed to golf. And so I talked to Derek
just today and one of the things we're doing on
the golf tournament, we're gonna have a heckling hole.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Ye. Perfect, I love it.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So the heckler, one of the heckler's on that hole
when you're trying to tee off, it's Derek Hollin.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
So there you go.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
That's perfect.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
So we in these guys, just Colby Lewis and his
wife are flying in from California. It's his wife, Ginny's birthday,
and Kobe's like, I don't know if we can pull
this off.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Well, Coolbe pulls it off.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
So Ginny and Kolbe are coming in He's coming golfing,
and then Ginny and him will both be at the
concept that night. It's that kind of stuff that we're
able to do. It's just because I think it speaks
to the kind of guy Richard was in the legacy
that he's still that he still has with us. And
then what we're doing. I mean, all we're trying to
do is help families impacted by sudden loss, and it's
(08:43):
it's hard to say no to that because we don't.
We get nothing out of it, right, we except the
satisfaction of helping families. We have no overhead. Everything that
we get we turn right back into helping families. That's
why we're able to help families, and I think that's
one of the reasons that people are willing to help us,
because they know there's nothing getting there's nothing getting kept back. Right,
we have no our expenses of what we pay for
(09:05):
at these events. Our bar tab is normally our biggest
expense for all our VFP guests, and that's that's always
our favorite thing, is right. They could care of the
bar tab because the bigger the bar tab you know
you've had more fun.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
True, So uh, as someone who has worked for the
Rangers before on the ground, screw and yourself, somebody who's
been on the field during batting practice, can you just
talk about how amazing batting practices You're just watching these
guys like they're just bullshitting around. Of course they're trying
to hit the ball and focus and you know, get
things right, but you know they're having fun. It's batting practice,
it's not the actual batting so like they're having so
(09:37):
much fun. So anybody who hasn't even a chance to
go see this live, like.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Yeah, you know, and they have to go through the
rotations and all that right, and they got to hit
to right, hit it to left, and trying to get
the get the runner over and stuff like that. But
you get to see things, like you said, from a
completely different perspective, and as part of this, you know,
you you're you're part of it, right because when he's done,
it's like when my son would go to spring training
with this because of what I did, he had favorite players,
(10:03):
and those favorite players would come up to Patrick after
bank practice and talked to Patrick and then like just
ditch everybody else. Pa Patrick thought he was like the
coolest thing ever. You're the coolest thing ever, right because
this is what Corey Seeker is gonna do to you.
And it's not just Corey. Josh Smith is also doing
the same thing in a different game. So yeah, we've
got those kind of things just going. It's it's really
(10:25):
so cool. And then you know people like Randy Rogers,
Casey donand you guys that have played and done our
stuff before. They're sending ticket packages and it's the meet
and greet stuff like you can bid on going to
see Randy Rogers his December seventh concert at Billy Bob's.
You do meet and greet with him and then you
up front. I actually I bought I got that package
last year for myself. If my wife blows Randy Rogers,
(10:47):
flat Land Cavalry, all those guys, they're all in.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
The auction right.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
And another side story about me being on the ground
screw not to get myself over, but there are times
that it was at the old ballpark where we would
have to go pick up trash off the field. It
was most notably Dollar hot Dog Night because it was
always the windyst night for whatever reason whatsoever, and it
would all accumulate right where the you know, the pictures
would come out for the Rangers. Well, in between innings.
(11:15):
We can't just you know, jump out there while they're playing,
so we got to wait in between innings or whatever
pitching change. So I hung out with Derek Collin for
a little bit. That man is very quick witted and
so I can't wait to hear the stuff that he
does on the golf course because heckling golfers is one
of my favorite things to watch on Instagram.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Now. Well yeah, and I mean, I know, like from
our foursome, right, So the guys are behind me are
guys I went to junior high with high school I
know they're high school girlfriends and stuff like that. Who
they're not married to now, but whether in the next wing,
Derek is going to be ready with nicknames for people
that they don't want to hear ever.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I mean as that kind stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
And it is for donations too, right, We've got a
long drive competition on the course. You can win a
car on the course. Gateway at GMC is our presenting
sponsor again, so holding one will.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Still win you a car. So we're really really fortunate.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Yeah, but Derek, I mean when we found out about
the heckling thing that was today and so I texted
Emily and I texted and I said, Derek, I think
we have a job for you, and he was like,
I'm in.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
And the thing about that is and it just speaks
to the kind of people.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Derek has his chariot event the night before at Lava
Cae Tina in the Colony, and so that's the night
of the seventh. In the morning of the eighth, at
nine o'clock, he's going to be out there. Now, we've
got blood, Bloody Mary's and screwdrivers on the course for
everybody too, and we've got three different food stations on
the course too, So it's a lot of different things
that are going on that are going to make it fun.
(12:42):
But yeah, Derek, and Derek is another one of those guys.
We've watched Derek off every year and he's never I
think Derek is probably raised about fifty thousand dollars for
us by just watching them off. But it wasn't just
that he's given his shoes when he was with the Giants.
Derek got us assigned Willie mays that we have in
our option, right. So it's it's that kind of stuff,
(13:04):
those connections and the people that knew Richard and then
the people that know about our foundation that make things
so much easier on us because they just want to help.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
So as much as this is obviously baseball centric for
a lot of people, it is you guys broadened outside
of that as well. What are some other sports that
you know, other fans like obviously Cowboy fans, mass fans,
like everybody can be like, oh, you know, I like baseball,
I like the Rangers, but this is my sport.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
We've got TMS has a package in there that the
Stars have a package. We've got so many different golf
packages in there. We're working on our MAVs package.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
You know.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
That was the biggest thing a few years ago was
the Luca rookie.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Game used shoes.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
So someone bought that one of our auctions at the
old Ballpark for eleven dollars. They got them authenticated and
photo matched to a Luca rookie. So rookie game, he
warn fuck eleven games. So he sold those for thirty
thousand dollars. Then two years ago there was an auction
the shoes that started to do it for Dirret sold
(14:06):
for one hundred a little over one hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Whoa, it's that kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
And we had Luca's shoes again two years ago and
I think we raised like seventy five thousand dollars with
a pair of Luca Game you shoes. So and the
crazy thing is we're still working on getting that kind
of stuff. Mark Cuban has a package in there. Well,
he'll follow you on social media. He's always supported our
foundation too, So it's really it's just all over place
(14:31):
texts a and him always gives us something.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
So that's always good.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
So there's I never know when I look at the
auction page what's going to pop up next, because we
have the traditional stuff, you know, restaurant packages and stuff
like that, and boots and purses and different kinds of
crazy things. But yeah, you know, we don't say no
to a lot, and we're fortunate that a lot of
people want to support us.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
That's amazing. So what is the thing that you or
most kind of eyeing and you know, kind of asking
your wife like is this okay.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Well it's probably going to be pumpy or all the
billy Bob's on December seventh. Again for Randy Rogers. I
don't know how that always works out. One year, it
was her birthday doing COVID and he wasn't doing any concerts,
but he owns a place in Roanoke and I found
out and it was my wife's birthday. He was going
to do one concert that day, and so I texted
(15:21):
him and she's like, he didn't text Randy Rogers, you
don't have this.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Number, and that showed her.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
I said yeah, and he's those We're all set for
tickets and she's like, oh my god, Brady, why just
texted you back? Said we're really going. So we went
out there and we didn't know we could have gone
on the Dame tour bus. He ended up putting my
wife on the side of the stage the whole concert,
so she thought it was great. But again, it's a
that's another thing that formed from a relationship. We had
(15:44):
to do it for dirt when Randy played our first
year at Billy Bob's. So we're just really really lucky.
But yeah, that's the biggest thing for me. I have
an Ernie Banks signed jersey hanging in my office that
my buddy actually bought for me at the very first
do it for Durrec because there any banks player. So
it's it's it's like that. It's it's really crazy like that.
(16:06):
And I've got friends and we know people who are
bidding on stuff already know what they want to bid on.
There's a dormy golf network where God Goes. You can
play like six different courses across the United States.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
We got trips to Belize.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
We did a yacht. Someone went on a yacht last
year down South America. So it's it's it's nuts the
kind of stuff that we end up having in these stuff.
But that is a little lot of my price range.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Well, of course, yes, yes, yes, yeah. Once you said yacht,
I was like, I'm out, and then you said South America,
was like, I'm very more out. So, well, what is
your wife's favorite Randy Rogers soon?
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Uh, you know, let's see, she wants the one that
just came out again. Gosh, you're gonna put me on
the spot here. He just re released a roller coaster.
He just re released roller coaster, and I know she
loves fuzzy, so I listened to those kind of songs.
The crazy thing is I go to Randy Rogers concert
and she goes, oh, you know this song? I don't know,
(16:59):
I don't, Yes, Oh yes I do, Yes, I do apparently,
so I've heard, I've heard them all. Yeah, I know
she loves Fuzzy because we hear that one a lot.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
Nice. Well, So for those getting excited about Josh Abbitt,
what is your what song are you most looking forward
to Josh Abbott playing?
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Yeah, he's got that, He's got that Texas song, right,
I know he's gone.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
He did that Dairy Queen commercial, So I'm there for that.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Emily Jones loves Josh Abbott because Emily will tell the
story that when she was working in uh In TV
and Love like her first job, Josh Abbott was a
student at Texas Tech and he held up a sign
that said, I think said marry me Emily Jones and
so he holds she holds that over him still that
Emily Jones wanted Josh I wanted to marry Emily Jones.
(17:44):
And he was on Emily's podcaster mom Game.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Show, Such a great show about three or four.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Weeks ago talking about our event too. So everybody's on board. Yeah,
so we've we're just looking to see what happens.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Well.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Is there anything we haven't covered about the event that
people might need to try to figure out? No, where
can they go? Where can they donate? If they can't make.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
It live and silent auctions? We're also going to do
a raffle ticket. So if you don't think you can
afford the we'd do something called the Golden Ticket.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
I think it's seventy five dollars.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
If you don't think you can afford one of the
big auction items, you can try for the Golden ticket
two years ago.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
The Golden Ticket winner, you can.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
You cast that in for when the live auction items,
So your seventy five dollars can get a live auction item.
So two years ago they went to Cooperstown, went to
the Hall of Fame and had a White Glove tour.
Last year was actually my friend who cast in and
won it, and surprisingly I picked the package. And so
the twelve of us went to a Rangers game and
sat in the suite behind home plate like down there
(18:50):
where we had our own we had our own bar,
we had our own bartender, we had our own everything food.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
It was.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
It's the craziest thing, is like I'm going for that
package and going to go good idea. So yeah, we
have that, we have a fifty to fifty, we'll have merch.
We've got Josh Abbitt shirts just branded for this event,
and Josh Abbott will be selling his he'll have his
merch stuff there too. But we've got something for everyone,
and you know you can contribute it. Do it for
(19:18):
durrect dot com. You can go to the Josh Abbot's website,
or you can go to Texas Live website and buy
tickets for the event. You can go to you can
search us on event bright. You can buy VIP tickets
for the event, which you get you thirty minutes of
like the meet and Greek time with Josh Abbott upstairs.
(19:38):
You can also go to the play golf in the
morning too. That's all on the event bright thing too,
and do it for direct.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
I can't wait for this event. I love that you
guys are ten years strong into this and you know,
obviously I look forward to you guys doing twenty thirty
forty years of downline.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
So well, I don't know I'll be around for forty,
but that's a.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Good someone will yes, Yeah, that's good that's good.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
I appreciate that well.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
So a question, what is that view like behind the
on the field behind home plate on TV? I'm like,
you're just seeing a bunch of butts. But is it
worth it?
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah? It is.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
It is definitely worth it. So my buddy's not in
the in the he was He's a heck he's the heckler.
So he was yelling at Red Sox guys in like
throwing little pebbles of dirt at them because the dirt
it comes in. And then so one of the guys
actually when he came back for a foul ball, he
actually feigned like he was throwing the ball at him,
(20:30):
so they could if you think, if you want to
get a place where they can definitely hear you, that's
the place.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Yep. I love it. Anthony, Thank you so much. If
you get you know, everybody, do what you can for
do it for dirt.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
You know.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
November eighth, Friday, Texas Live that morning. If you want
a golf golf that night, you want to go to
the event, or do both, please do either way. Help
out as much as you can. Anthony, again, thank you
so much, and I can't wait for you guys for
the event.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Well, I appreciate it, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Thank you so much to Anthey for being on the
show again. If you guys want to play golf Friday morning,
there are spots left if you want to come that
night or you want to do both. It is going
to be at Texas Live. You are not going to
want to miss Josh Abbott afterwards and you get to
you know, you know, potentially win some really amazing things
for the DFW area sports wise, so you're definitely not
going to want to miss it, and all for an
(21:20):
amazing cause to do it for. Dirrett Foundation has done
so much for so many families for ten years now
and I can't wait to see what the next ten
years whole lot for. Make sure to check us out
