Speaker 1 (00:25):
Welcome to Downtown, brought to you by our much since
it is the media, I am Roady John. On this
episode of the Downtown, we talked to Mary Elaine and
Ashley with Fools Kava House. We talk all about how
they discovered Fools, what cava is, and so much more.
We also hear local music from Zach Magnum with his
new song The Power that You Hold. But first here
(00:45):
is Mary Elaine and Ashley with Fool's Kava House.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I would like to welcome to show.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Mary Aline and Ashley with Fools Cova House. How are
y'all doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
How about you doing well?
Speaker 1 (00:57):
So I guess say y'all's names?
Speaker 2 (00:59):
So people who know talking in so.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Ashley and I'm Mary Elaine, I'm the CEO of fools
Cova House.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
There we go.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So y'all were the new owners as of this year.
How did y'all come across it?
Speaker 6 (01:11):
So we actually we were visiting our friends shop down
the road at Inclusion Coffee.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yes, and just for.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
Giggles, we had actually frequented Akva Bar in North Dallas,
and so we were actually going to head to the
one about twenty minutes from here. And as we were driving,
we saw Foolskava house, so we just dropped in and
that was October fourth, and we.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Remember the day that's impressed.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
We fell in love with the spot and the vibe
and obviously the products. So that was kind of our
venture with Foles Nice.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
So for those who don't know, you know, people hear cava,
they might think of the Spanish sparkling wine. However, caba
is with a k and means something completely different. So
for the as we're not very familiar with kava, can
you please go into the history of it.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Sure?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, So kava is a uphoric tea.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
It origin needed in Fiji and the Pacific Islands. Essentially,
there are a lot of different veins of kava depending.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
On how you want to feel.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
But it's just there's a kava plant and we use
the roots of it to make this tuporic tea essentially.
Speaker 7 (02:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
And then we also serve kreatum here, which is another
tea from Indonesia, and again we've got.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Different strains of it.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
If you want to feel stimulated or relaxed, we've got
all of that available.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Very nice.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah, So cava is mainly used, like you said, in
the Pacific Island or Pacific Ocean cultures. How has the
plant been received here in this area very well?
Speaker 6 (02:43):
So we found it because we have been sober from
alcohol for four years, congratulations, thank you, And just because
we are super busy, we just still needed that kind
of relaxing in the evenings.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
And it should be that you lose when you stop
drinking to the bars, you know.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
Yeah, and being big football people, we just were looking
for somewhere where we could hang out, you know, and
have the community and we found it. So on top
of that, I've been in health and fitness and wellness
pretty much my entire like adulthood, so finding something that
aligned wellness with the community I found that was I
(03:27):
couldn't think of anything better to share with my friends
and my new friends that I haven't met yet.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, I mean this place has done, especially before you
guys even owned it, so much for the community, and
I imagine obviously y'all will keep that up going forward.
What does that connection with the community truly.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Mean for both of y'all?
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, So I worked in nonprofit my entire adult life,
so I'm currently essentially a grant writer for Meals on Wheels.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
So that you're familiar with it so I.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
And also I should also mention that I'm like a
fourth generation of Natives. I just I really love the
community in Dallas. I'll live here my whole life, and
so we do want to continue finding ways to give back.
And I think that there's some cool opportunities coming up
in March for like Women's History Month.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
We want to go to a domestic violence shelter stuff
like that. So we want to see this community thrive
and we want to be a part of that.
Speaker 8 (04:21):
Yeah, I don't know if you had anything add on
yours end. Okay, So what are some of y'all's favorite
cocktails that y'all can make here?
Speaker 6 (04:35):
So we have a new feature on the menu called
the Magician. I'm not going to give too much away,
but when you taste it, it's going to give you
a reminder of a treat you probably had if you
grew up in the South, especially in the summertime. So
that's kind of one of the favorites. I personally really
enjoy just the raw flavor of the kava and the kratum. However,
(04:58):
it's not everyone's cup of tea literally, so I.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Would say for the kratem side because my wife Ashley
is much more a Kaba person.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I prefer the Kratem personally.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
We have one called the Lovers, which is strawberry and
peach with lemonade and cretem, so it's kind of like
a fancy Arnold Palmer.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
That's my personal favorite.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, I love that.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Well, so what are some other cocktails that people have
been enjoying here and that you guys are still kind
of tinkering with.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Yeah, we just actually released a new menus, so we've
got a lot of new things coming. We have kind
of a kava drink that's kind of like a pina colada,
so it's got coconut and pineapple.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Juice in it.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
It's very very tasty and kind of hides the earthy
taste of pava.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
What other I mean drinks have we released recently?
Speaker 6 (05:44):
Pretty much Kreatem goes well with any juice, whereas the
kava meshes really well with like the milky or creamier.
I personally just like my go to kava is just
some chocolate milk and some creamer.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Okay.
Speaker 6 (05:58):
Who's so kind of makes a little bit tastier beverage and.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
We are excited to be releasing like machas and lattes
that mix really well with the kava, so you can
do that iced or hot.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Those have on it it really well recently. Yeah, very nice.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Yeah, well, y'all mentioned being sober for four years now,
and the non alcoholic category has grown so much since
the dates of it was just for pregnant women and
recovering alcoholics.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
True.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
What have you noticed has kind of been the biggest
thing helping people that either reevaluate their relationship with alcohol
when it comes to cabba and the kraton, we're just
finding a new alternative for what they want to drink.
Speaker 6 (06:37):
I think it's the alternative is huge. I think, you know,
people use alcohol to relax and at a level it
can be used as an escape, of course, so we
just want to give you that relaxation without feeling like.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
You have to escape from anything. I think the community
is huge.
Speaker 6 (06:59):
I've made friends with people here that I would just
never come across in my everyday life.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
So I think the community.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
I think the beverages, the feeling you get from the
beverage brings people, but the community keeps them.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Walking in the door, of course.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Yeah, And I would add that there's about three hundred
and fifty cob of bars in the United States, and
about ninety percent of those are in Florida.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Like Cavature is huge there, but the ones that are
outside of Florida have really become safe places for sober people.
And a big part of that is just like, you.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Lose so many of your friends and you lose so
much of your community when you get sober. And we
I mean, we've gone four years till we found this place,
but I it really just like reignited this spark in
me that I missed and.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
I didn't realize I missed until I found it here
and I was like, Wow, these people get it, you know.
So it's been really cool well.
Speaker 6 (07:51):
And also, I mean, we were so blessed to have
a great support system that helped us find sobriety pretty
a little confident, but we did it pretty easily, and
so I know that not everyone has the amazing support
system that we do. And her parents they were pretty
much I mean, it was their hand predominantly that helped
(08:13):
us both achieve sobriety, and especially some of the younger
people I know they unfortunately don't have that. So we
want to be able to pay it forward and if
we can be those people to help others, then that's
why we did this.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Yeah, and I'm like looking around this room and at
least half of us in this room are so right.
You know, we all have our own stories, but we
can really find common grounds because of that.
Speaker 6 (08:34):
So that's really doesn't matter where you come from, your background,
your profession, your race, your orientation and multiple forms. I mean,
we all connect on the community and we're all here
for a reason and we all root for each other
and we are there when you know someone has a
fall per se. And I mean I've seen some most
(08:56):
grace in these in these walls, and that just had
that speaks volumes.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Yet now, obviously at being the new owners, you will
want to put your own style on it. As I'm looking,
you guys are painting in the bathroom right now. What
other fun things can people look forward to with y'all
being then?
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Yes, I think maybe the most exciting thing is we're
going to have a lot of events coming.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
So coming up quickly is our Super Bowl parties.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
We'll have food, we'll have some drink specials.
Speaker 9 (09:26):
Think yes, exactly, Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Think you we'll have some non alcoholic fere up here
like it's going to be a good time. We actually
had my thirtieth birthday party here a couple of weekends ago.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
The place was packed. It was so much fun. We
did a new receive party.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
We want to start hosting some networking events up here
and invite some of the Arlington young professionals overs. So
I think events is a big thing to look forward
to in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 6 (09:54):
And that's another way to kind of really strengthen our
community while you know, bring people together and just building
a stronger downtown Arlington. I mean, I've been very impressed,
which is how personable and I mean people have been
flocking to come meet us, So it's been really nice.
(10:15):
Knew the new ownership has been very well received. So
we're just looking forward to kind of just keeping it
going and you know, we're still keeping the founder's vision
of this place alive and well because at the end
of the day, they did the.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Hard work, so they built the community, you know, and
we're just kind of cleaning it up a little bits,
so throwing some pain on it.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Well, y'all are also the first female and queer owned
Coppa Bar in DFW. What does that mean most for you.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
To me? I bought this business because of how much
I loved the people here in the community.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Like, I never saw this as a money making venture.
I think what it means to me, especially.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
In light of the administration for the next four years,
is we have a safe place for absolutely everybody to come.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
And I think that's just really the most important piece
to me.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
Yeah, I think that the whole inclusivity is huge right
now for anyone, you know, who might appear different in
society's norms. So we just want to make people feel welcome,
and you know, everyone's welcome in our door, and we're
just looking forward at making some new friends and adding
on to the Fools family.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Well, so we have a segment show it called the
Tournament Talkings, trying to find the best pizza place in
our lands. What is y'all favorite pizza places?
Speaker 3 (11:45):
It might be the only place I've tried.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
But.
Speaker 6 (11:48):
I have to say, I mean Connie rosso Is also
is also another one.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Get a chance old schools down the street as well. Okay,
that has been almost everyone.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Okay, Oh we need to go good to know, thank you.
I'm when I do that for dinner.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
