This episode was recorded the day after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. We did not know that would happen at the time this interview was scheduled. As a writer, performer, director and Cultural Organizer, Andrea has spent a decade working on increasing awareness, visibility and support of Arab, Middle Easter/North African and Muslim Communities, and the ”Wars on/of Terror” in Afghanistan and Iraq. I asked Andrea for her thoughts about the Taliban take over and we have a frank, relevant discussion about the event, and the effect on the people of Afghan, Afghan women, and on our Warriors who fought and died in Afghanistan over the last 20 years. Andrea also talks about healing that comes from the artistic process and the revealing of hidden stories, sharing with us parts of her own Becoming Story of trauma in her childhood and her move to New York only 8 days prior to 911.
Look out for Part Two of the interview where Andrea talks about her recent diagnosis with the rare autoimmune disorder, Ankylosing Spondylitis. And we have the privileged of her reading the poem she wrote “Dear Vaccine”, which is about her experience with the disorder, and its relationship with the COVID vaccine.
