Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jack Eblin here with my good friend Matt Sloan of
graph of Ocmists. Lots of traffic over here. Things are
going great, Matt. Why is everyone coming here?

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well, Jack, I'm a little biased, but I like to
think it's the people. We truly have a great staff
here to a service body shop sales. A lot of
our employees were here before we bought the store, and
the family atmosphere and the fact that we truly care
and want to take care of our customers and make
it a great experience for them and build that relationship.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Can't ask for more than that. Stopvious. See Matt and
the gang here at graph of Ocamists. They're making friends.
Great afternoon at Michigan and beyond and welcome to the
Driveway Jack the Spotlight a radio Network, Jack Ebling and
my producer today, Boston Rob. We are downtown at one
oh five. That's Alligan on a kind of a wet Tuesday,

(00:47):
fifty nine degrees. Just damp out there, but it's supposed
to clear up a little bit later and then it's
going to get a little warmer. That's a good thing. Well,
we have a big show planned for you, and we're
gonna be talking basketball and golf and baseball, so much
more coming up. Very happy to have with us rob
our first guest, my broadcast partner for more than twenty

(01:11):
three years now, that is Bluebelly Tom Tom Crawford. He
is a creator of the Crawford Podcasting Network.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Tom.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
How are you well? I'm doing great, Jack.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I'm waiting for that sunny weather and I just saw
a little bit ago. We got seven days of sunshine
and warmth and dry conditions.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Your kind of weather. Jack.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Hey, someone told me over the weekend that every time
they hear you, either on this show or on your
appearances on press Pass, you seem a little bit better.
This is incremental. You've been through an incredible battle, but
we all know you're going to come out on top.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I've I've been hearing that myself, and I love hearing that.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
I feel better.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I've got some great physical therapists getting mess and a
little bit more than a month from now, on June tenth,
I have my last hurdle. I want to have my
thyroid removed and hopefully from that point forward as totally
recovery saves and rehab and I'm gonna feel like Aiden
Hutchinson getting ready for the Lion season and twenty twenty five,

(02:21):
you know, just all about getting better and making you know,
getting one percent better every day. And I'm looking forward
to this summer and obviously the fall two with football.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Big Ten football teams were not sure if they should
continue preparing for twenty twenty five, but I assured them
that you would be ready to go, and so they're
going to keep going. But we did not have the
Tigers last night night off before they begin their series
in Colorado against the worst team in the major leagues.

(02:51):
That's a relief to the Chicago White Sox. We're not
talking about them, But we did have, yeah, pretty impressive
hockey game in two incredible basketball games last night. I
know you were paying close attention to those road upsets
in the second round by the New York Knicks and
the Denver Nuggets.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
I watched the entire Knicks cell this game, and quite frankly,
Boston cellis had been my least favorite team, probably of
all time. Maybe it's because they wear green and white,
maybe it's as simple as that, but but you know,
in the Knicks, I'm still singing from that loss, but

(03:31):
I have so much respect for the Knicks. Yeah, I
mean they're down twenty and this team, this team is special,
it really is. And I was I was sharing for
the Knicks last night to beat the Celts in the garden.
And then and then I watched the first half of
the Deborah o KC game. And you know, I'm trying
to in my recovery phase. I need more sleep than

(03:54):
I used to used to need, and I just couldn't
stay awake. And then I got up morning and watch
that ending Aaron Gordon, I mean, what what a great game. So,
like we always say, if you're you know, if you're
a disadvantage going into a series, you don't have home
court advantage, you're gonna grab one.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
You gotta grab game one.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Game one is the most vulnerable one, especially like in
the situation where the Cavaliers who have been sitting around
forever and then the Pacers come in there fresh off
that you know he did win, uh and you know,
and then and then you know, that's when you grab it.
And it's my god, it's been amazing.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Cavaliers banged up, did not have Darius Garland running things
at the point. Two other injuries last night.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, they're they're banked up. They're in trouble right now,
I think myself.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, Evan Mobley, it looks like he's questionable at best
for Game two. And you wonder what would happen if
Indiana could come in and get a pair of wins
in Cleveland and then at home, we might have the
Pacers as the big surprise of the year.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, you know, it's funny. I mean you rarely see
a two old thing go where the road team grabs
the two ones on the road and then all of
a sudden they go home, probably fighting complacency, like thinking
that they got it and that can lose that real quick,
you know, I mean, you can't get caught. You gotta
you just got to get the four wins as quick
as as they can. The Pacers have never won an

(05:27):
NBA championship. I remember the Pacers because I was a
big a BA fan back in the day and they
won an ABA title And when George mcginnisign that I
love the ABA because they they had that beach ball
looking basketball and they had a lot of dunkers and
Doctor J and so yeah, this would be a first

(05:49):
for them, and so that, you know, I love to
see the Pacers advance and that I think that would
be terrific. I love to see the Patris in the
next way.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Frankly, Tom, what do you make of this road court
advantage that we've been seeing in the Pistons Knicks series?
In the playoffs, the visiting team won five out of
six after winning three out of four regular season so Detroit,
New York, the road team won eight out of ten,
and then the last two nights. If you look at

(06:20):
what happened with the Warriors win over the Rockets in
Game seven of the first round, and then the three
starts to these games, the road team has won all four.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Well, this is this is my interpretation of this. I
mean the NBA is another level. I mean we're so
focused on college basketball, which in all of sport, I
think in college basketball, the home court or home field,
whatever it is, that's that's the number one factor, I think.

(06:55):
And the sport that has it have the most impact
is so different. It's so different. And you look at
those the Warriors, all all their performances, of the winning performances,
but heal, all those casts, they were all thirty two
years older, oh you know, old and older. There were

(07:16):
veteran players like stef and I you know, and Draymond Green.
It's just that the you know, the whole being the
visiting team just doesn't. It doesn't You're unflappable at that
stage of your life as a professional athlete. In my opinion,
it just doesn't bother you might even motivate you. Who knows.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
How do you think the Knicks did this? Was there
a carryover from the Piston series that they seemed indomitable
and Jalen Brunson fearless, but he had a lot of
help last night from og An Andobi and especially Michael
Bridges was incredible.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Well as a warrior.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
The guy had fifty one minute I mean, think about
that for a second and h and high cardiovascular sport
of basketball. Fifty one minutes where you're on your feet
and and that's you know, that team, the Knicks. I mean,
I mean, they're they're well, they're they're about a seven
man rotation and that's where it ends. I mean, you know,

(08:21):
Mitchell Robinson's in there, you know, clanking right. I'd get
him off the off the court as quick as you could.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
But I mean they're starting five. They were in this.
I granted this was overtime.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
But I mean they're they're minutes for like fifty one,
forty six, forty four, forty five. That's crazy. And Dylan Brunson,
I'm telling you what, that guy is freaking money. And
even when he has a bad game, you know in
the fourth quarter, it's gonna come up right now. I
did you know with the Pistons, I think when the

(08:56):
Pistons won at the Garden that last time he had
a bad game.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
That's been about the only that's his only bad game.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
And I just think of Illinois almost got Jalen Brunson.
I remember it came down to those two teams before
he went to Villanois. I know Michigan State was in
the hunt too. Man. He's a good he's a really
good player.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
He's incredible.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Well, you saw the end of the Nuggets game and
what they did to Okay see coming from behind. You know,
the Knicks were twenty down in that game against the Celts,
but for uh the second game Denver behind forty two
points and twenty two rebounds by Nikola Jokic. That was incredible,

(09:42):
and you know it looked like he wasn't doing much
and then the next thing, you know, he's got eight
more points, So just amazing that they were able to
take advantage. And a couple of missed free throws by
chet Holmgren at the end opened the door.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Oh well, yeah, that's just it. I mean, you're talking
about professional athletes, you'd think, uh, the free throws of
being automatic, and you know those.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Were those were bad misses.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
By home Greun and I mean that opened the door.
I mean, actually when it kind of came down to
it though, I'm I'm trying to think, you know, Aaron
Gordon hit a three, they would have they were still
want and even if he made one of them, but
i mean, still, you gotta you know, you got to
close it out when it's there, and you know, I'm thinking, okay,
see we'll win Game two. But man, when you lose

(10:32):
home court advantage, that that's that's just tough, Slettings. So
it will be interesting to see how this plays out
and and how the Nuggets, you know, how much they
you know, embrace the opportunity. I mean, my man, Russell
Westbrook still at it. I always enjoyed, I've always enjoyed
watching him play, and he had a good game last night.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
He can't he was at the line. Now, you know,
that's the best place to have him, is that the outline?

Speaker 4 (11:01):
Yeah? Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah he was yeah he yeah. So anyway, I you know,
like I said before, I think on Press Pass, I'm
so wrapped up in college basketball when college basketball is on,
and then when you hit March Fadis and then I
completely switched my focus over to the NBA as far
as the sport that I follow. And even though the Pistons,

(11:24):
you know, they didn't they didn't get past the opening,
you know, they're opening opportunity. They did not advance, but
they've made such great strides and you know, Jamie Baker
Staff should have been a coach the year in my opinion.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
But that's that's all right.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
But they have so much promise moving forward, and I'm
super excited. I mean, they have two of their better
players that were hurt. I mean, this this is a
this looks good for the Pistons moving forward.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Tom, we have to switch gears here and talk some
college football and college sports in general. And I was
unaware of this until we were taping Press Pass Sunday night,
and Rico Beard was on with Jim Stark and and
he said Hey, Michigan needs a new president. I said, what.

(12:13):
I couldn't imagine that Santa Onno would be leaving, But
apparently he is going to be a new president at Florida.
What happened?

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Yeah, Santa Ono was an interesting president, okay. And I
you know, I when I was at Michigan, there was
a guy named Robin Fleming who was the perfect blend
of a president. He didn't go overboard on sports. He
wasn't like Mark Schlistle did. All it matters is academics
and research.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
He was right in the middle.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Okay, And Santa Ono was too much of this you know,
Josh Sniff and you know fanboy con he was going
around the press patch. I mean, I just didn't like
to look at you know, and I'm a big sports guy.
But he didn't everything. So he's leaving Michigan because this
football thing might be coming down. Blah blah blah. That

(13:04):
has nothing to do with it. That has absolutely nothing
to do with I mean, he you know, University of
Florida is strong academically, but it I mean, the SEC
academically is you know, not not in the same stratosphere
as a Big ten in terms of academia and research,
so he's he's taking a step down. I mean, Florida

(13:26):
is probably behind Vanderbilt academically, and then there's all you
other guys in the SEC. But for him to go
to Florida, you wonder what the heck's going on. And
quite frankly, I think what's happening at the You know,
I think there's some pressure from the Board of Regions.
This is just my theory on it. I mean I
have some rumblings of it, but no proof. But there's

(13:46):
a lot of pressure of the executive office is coming
at colleges about funding and d DC and you know,
you have, you know, all these different control factors, and
I think some Board of Regents want, I don't know
what to push back, and he's probably in the middle
of it and you don't want to deal with it.
So goinging to Florida where he probab didn't have that
much pressure down there, well.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
I'm wondering because he's under contract at Michigan through twenty
thirty two, crazy and he just received a big raise.
He just received a thirty three percent raise. So it's
not a matter of Florida coming in and making him
an offer. He can't refuse. I don't has anyone spoken
to him? Have you heard anything?

Speaker 3 (14:28):
No, I mean I got a couple of sorts of
me talking to initiuple days and but frankly.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Were you surprised for the reasons the reasons? I just cided,
I don't, you know.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
I don't. I don't really care that he's going if
he wants to go, go. But you know, I find
that that strang you. Just the way you just frame that,
you know, to twenty thirty two is insane. It is
a little weird, and maybe there's other things going on.
I mean, I have no clue what's going on. I mean,

(15:03):
I know breadcrumbs of what's going on at the University
of Michigan, and I have my ear open to a
lot of people and some people that you and I
know both are pretty good insiders. And it's really hard
to evaluate and including this investigation. You know, Okay, June
fourth and fifth or fifth and sixth, the trial's going

(15:24):
to be on and Pat forty said, hey, you should
that should be a pay per view blah blah blah
blah blah, and it's all going to come down. And
then ward Manuel told us in the fall Is at
a football press conference. Actually that the investigation was, you know,
will be cleared up by August. I think it's going
to be cleared up before then. And what it looks

(15:46):
to me like Michigan is proactively you know, taking their
medicine for lack of.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
A better term.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
He J Helen at the Wolvering dot Com reported that
all the recruits that Michigan was going after weren't seeing
any coaches in the to May right until June fifth.
So it looks like to me, all this stuff is
pre negotiated, you know, not sanctions, but measures that are

(16:13):
self penalizing. The Michigan is going to undergo and cleans
your own more taking himself out of the central Michigan
and the Nebraska game. You know, that to me sounds
like that's negotiated because you would think the first two
games right New Mexico Oklahoma, right, Well, I think Sharon Moore,
a former Oklahoma suitor, wants to go to Norman and

(16:36):
be part of that experience myself. So that's I mean,
don't you think that sounds like to you pre negotiated.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Yeah, I'm just curious because you talk about the pushback
against what's happening in Washington now and the pressure on
higher education to conform. Michigan's been pretty clear that it
thinks that, you know, it wasn't guilty of any egregious
sins here, Why would accept this, why it wouldn't fight

(17:03):
I'd heard was ready to go to battle over this.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Yeah, okay, and I heard the same thing. And I
heard that. I heard that when Jim Harball was there,
and and then you have these penalties against two coaches
that are no longer in the college football you know,
that are moved on to the pros, and so that's
that's not an issue. But yeah, it puzzles me. And

(17:29):
I know, and I know season ticket holders at more
than you know, more than a handful. Who are you
when I just taught to you today is well, I'm
going to that, I'm going to LA, I'm going to
the coliseum seeing play USC. But I'm done with this crap,
you know, because they're because of the same thing you
just said. You know, because you're talking on both corns

(17:50):
of your mouth. You say we're we're fighting this, we're
not guilty of anything, but then you're yourself imposing I
mean what you know where you know what is it.
I mean, I guess the only thing I'm hoping for
is this Jack, is that when it all comes out,
That's why that's when I want to start digging into it,
because I want to know all the fact.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
I don't want to.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Hear say I don't want to hear Buckeye Nuts Platform
version of what's going on, and they're going to have
to forfeiture or Spartan Waters version, which are all rhetorical haters.
I don't you know, and that gets circulate to other
schools as truth.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
I'm just waiting for it all to come out.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
And then I'll say my opinion of it. But quite frankly,
right now, I'm as you made a really interesting comment.

Speaker 4 (18:37):
I mean, you can't have it both ways.

Speaker 3 (18:39):
You can't say you're innocent and that you're self imposing
this stuff. It doesn't it doesn't sink together.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Yeah, yeah, Tom, I am excited about Sunday night. You're
going to be on Presspass again, and this time you're
going to be with the first time a rookie and
Mike Stone, and so that'll be interesting, that'll be fun.
I don't know if you saw this crazy list this

(19:07):
time of year, there are so many lists. I think
people are looking for something to fill up Kylin Minch's
and airtime, and it's gotten more attention. Somebody ranked the
eighteen Big Ten football coaches. Did you see that?

Speaker 3 (19:23):
No, I haven't seen that out. Yeah, sending it along
if you could.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Yeah, we're going to talk about it Sunday night. But
it had Ryan Day one, James Franklin, two, Rico just
had an aneurysm, and three was Kirk Farrence and then
it had Matt Ruhl. And you know, some of the
guys down at the bottom was amazing. I think Sharon

(19:48):
Moore was fourteenth, there's fifteenth, something like that. Anyway, it
has created a firestorm and even people from a school
are saying, our coaches way too high. That guy stinks
he should be down in the bottom five. So yeah, yeah,
very interesting stuff. I'll send it to you.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Wall.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
Where were Jonathan Smith? By chance? Was he ring?

Speaker 1 (20:10):
He was twelve?

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Wow?

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yeah, yeah, ahead of your own And some people said
that's way too low. If you look at what he
did at Oregon State, you can't judge him with the
collection of misfits he inherited. And other people said he
showed last year that he's a mediocre coach, So I
guess we'll have to wait and see.

Speaker 3 (20:33):
Well this year for Jonathan Fitt, though, this is going
to be the ultimate litmus test, don't you. I mean,
I think we're gonna when we have a conversation at
the end of November, you're gonna get I mean, out
of you and out of me. It's going to be
a clear evaluation of where this program's going. In my opinion, well, I.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Think I have a clearer idea of where the program's
going because of the financial situation than I do of
his ability. Because if you have a certain collection of players,
you know, you can go into Ohio State. You don't
have to be a great coach to win, but you
go into a place like let's say Minnesota. I look

(21:09):
at what PJ. Fleck has done, and you may or
may not like PJ. Fleck personally, but you look at that.
You look at the job Brett Bielima has done over
the years at Wisconsin and now at Illinois, and they're
doing something right. So yeah, you know, you look at
Kurt Signetti last year. A lot of people don't like
Kurt Signetti. I get it, but it's hard to demean

(21:31):
what he did even with that incredibly easy schedule Indiana had.
So you know, we will see, we'll know a lot more.
I always try to gauge performance against expectations.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
And yeah, that's always been That's always been your mantra
on that.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
Yeah, yeah, over the years.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
Yeah, Tom, we will talk again later in the week.
I'm sure on the phone or texting back and forth.
I will see you Sunday night, and by then we'll
have had a few more amazing finishes in the NBA Playoffs, I'll.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
Bet, and I'm looking forward to Sunday and night. Jakday
frame me on today.
