Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jack Ebling here with my good friend Matt Sloan. A
graph of Okeemists. Big summer here, Matt.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
That's right, Jack. We got the summer savings going on
right now at Graft Nissan and Graft Chevy of Okamists.

up to sixty months. If you're a Casto member, we
got extra rebates for that. We're getting fresh inventory every day.
It's been a great summer. We got great deals for.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
You zero percent.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Can't get much flower than that.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
That's exactly right, Papacy, Matt in the gang here on
West Grand River, Okamiz.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
They're making friends you. Welcome back. It is a drive
with Jack Spotlight the Radio Network.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Jack Eblin here with my producer Boston Rob rob Our
next guest. Drove back from Buffalo Orchard Park, New York,
about last night. Got back just after midnight. We'll talking
about Bob Trippy a long time. I'm State of Michigan
sports writer Captain Database and Bob. I'm going to see

(01:05):
you in a couple of hours over at Presdent Center, right.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Yeah, that's right. I'm on my way right now and
checking out these wonderful Michigan freeways. The feat on construction
can frustrate me along the way.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
It's funny because people always complain about the roads, and
I understand why, I believe me. But then when they
fix the roads, they don't like that either. I think
they want all the roads fixed when they are not
on them exactly.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
And I trust me, I've seen enough construction in the
last forty eight hours between the Ohio Turnpike in Pennsylvania.
It's the ninety and all this. It's something to behold.
I was just hoping things to be like done by now,
you know, especially going up to East Lansing. You know,
like right now, I'm going about twenty five miles an

(02:00):
hour on ninety six, and I have no idea if
it's construction up ahead or what. I have a feeling
it is because it's it's brightened. So but yeah, you know,
I put a lot of miles up this weekend, so
it should be interesting today.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
I'll make that trip to Bill's home games. You tried
to do one or.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
Two a year, Yes, yeah, yeah. This this was like
a last minute deal that you know. I had gone
up there in late September to see them play the Saints,
and then somebody said, hey, why don't you come up
for the Chiefs game. And I'm like, nah, you know,
I don't know what the weather is going to be like,
and I'll I said, oh come on, and I'm like, oh, well,

(02:46):
I'm not doing anything else, but you can stay down
the road. I'm not covering the lines this weekend, so
why not. So I did that, and you know, it
was a great game. It really was a great game.
And uh, you know, at least I got to see
them play the Chiefs. I had not seen them play
the Chiefs and you know, in a while and everything,
so it was good to you know, just the atmosphere

(03:09):
up there, it's a lot different For people who have
never gone to Buffalo to see a home game, it's
a totally different experience than what you you have in Detroit.
And Detroit it's in the city, but Buffalo it's out
in the suburbs and all that, and uh, it's just
a different atmosphere, you know, and I enjoy it. You know,

(03:29):
easy any easy out, which is kind of remarkable. And
you know, you could walk there. The parking places you
can walk there and they don't charge you. Ridiculous amount
of money. You know, So.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
In terms of location, yeah, is it?

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Is it more like what Lions fans used to have
with games at the Silver Dome, except of course it's
uncovered I Mark Stadium.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Yes, yeah, absolutely, it's it's more like that that that
that's been an analogy of what it's like. And uh, you know,
like I parked, I probably parked a quarter of a
mile away from the stadium. There's a place called Bird's Bikes.
And if you're not there, say at least four hours,
four and a half hours ahead of game time, you're

(04:15):
probably not going to get a parking spot because you know,
they they see about seventy eight thousand bands and next
to the game, all these people are stuck to be
in the parking lots around the stadium. But this bird Spike,
which is you know, like I said, not that far away,
you walk to your car and you just zip ont
of there, get on the Thruway and head back. So great, shout.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
That's pretty big place, Bob.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
How many NFL stadiums are larger than that, Jerry World, I.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
Honestly don't know. We know that Dallas has has one
that larger. I don't know about so far out the
lost angele stab might be larger and I think, but
other than that, I really don't know. I mean, the
stadium in the building right now, right across the street
is not going to hold him, and he's only gonna

(05:11):
hold like sixty some thousand. It is that they're they're
downside in the stadium. But there's gonna be more sweet
you know, that's where they make their money. It's part
of these sweet.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
So with the band, and we know there's tremendous demand
from Bill's mafia.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Those tickets are going to be even more expensive.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Oh they they already are because you got to buy
those personal seat licensement.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
You know, a friend of mine, he told me for
his personal seat license is like fifteen hundred dollars and
he's listening in a great seat. He said, I can
only imagine what the people in the in the nicer
seats are paying for their personal seat licenses. It's been,
you know, it's been growing and growing, and this, you know,
a whole licensee thing, you know, Michigan State Eumn doutor two.

(05:56):
If you want to end up, you know, being on
the sidelines and that you can end up having to
pay a little bit more with that license.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, So why is Buffalo so good against Kansas City
in the regular season and can't beat him in the postseason?

Speaker 3 (06:14):
What happens?

Speaker 4 (06:16):
That's a great question. You know, we're kind of talking
about that. It's like, too bad you can't can some
of this and save it for the for the postseason.
You know, I don't know, you know, I just think
they make the adjustment. John. Unfortunately, what happened is Buffalo
plays them in the regular season and you know there's

(06:37):
obviously adjustments that go on because of personnel, and you know,
they tweet things during the off season than that. But
the second time around, you kind of are prepared for
some of the stuff that you've already seen earlier in
the season. So, you know, speG Nola is the defensive
coordinator for Kansas City. You know, he's a pretty darn

(06:59):
good dependent make those adjustments. Uh, Unfortunately, yesterday he didn't
make enough of them to health Kansas City. But what
was really dialed in? I mean they you know, I
don't know, if you saw the hit on tamas Chelsea,
if by one of the bills and all that, and

(07:20):
you can just see they were hitting and they were
going after uh, I think this is their new approaches.
Let's see if we could shake up you know, Patrick
Mahomes and I don't know how many times he got hit,
but he was. He was taking the beatings back there,
and it's not something that you know, people are a
crusting to see him. You know, he chased out of
the pocket and then she's taking some head. There are

(07:42):
times I thought he's not going to get up and oh,
behold he got up.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
So but you know, yeah, Bob, of course, immediately you
think of Josh Allen and James Cook has been excellent
this year. One guy that we're not saying a lot
of and I thought we might more this year is
Kean Coleman. Can you talk a little bit about that

(08:10):
former spartan, former seminole and what he is not doing
to get on the field.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
Well, he's getting on the field, but you know he's
had some issues with the team and all that where
he's you know, ended up in a little bit of trouble.
We don't honestly know what it is. We think it
might be maybe showed up Lake to practice or something
like that. And there was one game where he didn't start,

(08:39):
and you know, there are times where he'll get hit,
and when he gets hit, he gets kind of a
little skittish, and you'll see it where let's say he's
going across the middle, he gets spun around, or he
catches the ball and gets his hit really hard, he
kind of backs off. He can't get the side operation,

(09:01):
you know, like the other receiver's time, and that's kind
of an issue for him. And you know, a lot
of Bills fans are kind of like, you know, that
was a wasted pick. He's not. He shouldn't have He
shouldn't have been picked. They should have went with Uh,
Savior Worthy from you know that Kansas City took, you know,
because of the speed and the separation that he can do.
So Josh Allen wuns wants chon Coleman, but k on Coleman.

(09:25):
And it has not been dependable. I mean, he had
a couple of catches yesterday, but beyond that, he hasn't
turned out to be what they were hoping he was
gonna be. And uh, I think you know last year
he got he ended up getting injured, and when he
came back, he was not the same receiver that he
was earlier in the season. And you know, there was
a lot of hopes that after the preseason in the

(09:47):
early part of this season, when he was catching some balls,
that oh, we're finally going to see Kean Coleman that
was drafted, and uh, that's not happened. That's not happened
at all.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
All right, let's talk about it. Another NFL game here
at Ford Field, and we remember last year in January,
it was the final game of the regular season. The
Lions and the Vikings were both fourteen and two. First
time in NFL history that two teams of the same division.

(10:19):
We're going to settle that in the game seventeen with
fourteen wins a piece, and Lions blasted the Vikings thirty
one to nine. Very different game from what we saw yesterday.
How surprised were you. I've talked to some Lions beat
writers today, including one who's going to be on with

(10:39):
us in a five o'clock hour, and they had no
clue that the script was going to.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Be what it was.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
I did not see that one coming at all. I
thought the Lions. I thought they was the w for
the Lions, but I really did coming off of by
I figured you're going to get some guys healthy, you know,
it just seemed like all the make heems were there
that the Lions were gonna win it. And then with
you know J J. McCarthy, uh, coming back from his injury,

(11:07):
you think there's gonna be some rust there. It wasn't.
It wasn't like we thought it was gonna be. And
then you know, the injury started like happening. And you know,
when you lose mahagayen offensive line and then Taylor Decker
looks like he's he's really hobbling quite a bit. So
what was the strength for the Lions that offensive line

(11:29):
as all of a sudden now turned into a you know,
a problem that they're gonna probably have to address via
the trade route, you know, the trade deadline tomorrow, and
I would fully expect that they're gonna have to make
some type of move to show up that offensive line
because they can't they can't go forward, you know, without
fixing the fixing that line because as we saw, if

(11:50):
Detroit doesn't have a running game, the passing game uh
seems to follow suits. You know, they couldn't do very much,
you know, offensive You know, a lot of the heat
on John Morton is uh, you know, it's falling on him.
Take a look at the third down conversions. They're not

(12:12):
they're not among the top, they're they're among the bottom
the third down conversions in the league. So that's that's
something it needs to be addressed too. So you know,
here it was after you know, they beat Chicago and
people are saying, well, who you know, who needs you know,
this guy, who needs that guy at all? We've got
John Morton, you know, super Bowl or bus after after

(12:35):
they they end up beating Tampa Bay and you know,
now all of a sudden, things are the kind of switch,
like do we have a problem here in terms of
you know, the play calling, the offensive line.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
I mean, Johnson's Chicago Bears would be one game behind
the Lions at this point and Chicago with a dramatic
win yesterday, playing with a lot of confidence. But you know,
you look at the Lions when they're going well, and
maybe this is indicative of fans, Bob, things changed so
fast and their moods changed so fast after the big

(13:11):
win over Tampa Bay. Sorry, Rob, After the big win
that we saw on Monday night exactly two weeks ago,
everyone's talking about who can beat the Lions. The rest
away they're not going to lose a game at Ford Field.
They're gonna win thirteen fourteen games this season. And they
were so dominant in that game. Everyone was saying, you know,

(13:33):
John Morton doing a tremendous job and Calvin Shephard. We
weren't hearing that yesterday. And you look at even at
Jamir Gibbs, as great as he was against the Bucks,
pretty quiet yesterday. David Montgomery had a very costly fumble

(13:54):
and the Lions didn't respond. They got a kick blocked.
I don't know whether it was the layoff or what,
but they just never really seemed in it. They did
score first, took a seven to nothing lead, and from
that point on they were the second best team on
the field.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. And you know what, they can't afford
to be playing like that. You know, I kind of
thought this is an eleven and six team, and they're
kind of halfway there to eleven and six, you know,
based off of who they got coming up. You know,
they still got to play Philadelphia, and you know, you
look at what Philadelphia is doing with their roster and
all that, where they're just looking for more pieces to

(14:33):
make them, you know, a repeat Super Bowl winner and
all that and the Lions and they had their handsful
with them. And I think, don't the Lions end up
playing the Rams too, I think coming up?

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:46):
So you know, it's it's not going to be an
easy you know, the rest of the season for them,
because they can't afford to keep having these injuries trump
up what they're having right now, and they need to
get offense drank and going in the right direction, because
you're right, I mean, just a couple of weeks ago,
they're talking about, Oh, they're explosive offense and everything's going

(15:09):
right for them. And now you know people are worried,
you know.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
The division games, Bob, but they they get the Packers again,
Green Bay brimming with confidence. That's the Thanksgiving Day game,
and you would think the Lions would be favored, but
they have to go to Chicago and Bears gave the
Lions a few problems here.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
That's not going to be easy.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
Bears are getting better and the Lions have to go
and play the Vikings in Minnesota. So you know, they've
already beat in Detroit once thinking that they could do it.
So this division is a little more competitive than some
people thought. I was in Minneapolis Friday and Saturday and

(15:58):
saw Michigan State give a game way to the Golden Gophers,
a game that for the first time this year, Bob,
I can say Michigan State lost a game it should
have won, and it wasn't beaten by the opponent. Michigan
State was beaten by USC beaten by Nebraska, beaten by Michigan,

(16:19):
beaten by uclamp by UCLA, and throttled by Indiana in
the second half. But Michigan State beat itself Saturday. Yet
it played its best game of the year in many ways.
You had talked last week, and I think you brought

(16:39):
up something that a lot of fans had not even
thought of, and that is paying the buyout versus investing
in talent and putting that money into player acquisition.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
It's a very similar path.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Actually, it's the same script Jonathan Smith followed in Corvacke.
That's a difference was he was an all time great
there as a Beavers quarterback, and fans were thrilled to
have him back. No one is thrilled to have him
in East Lansing, and I don't know whether he could

(17:14):
ever get anything close to the kind of support he
would need. But do you think that if Michigan State
could finish fast? Yeah, let's say Beach Penn State wins
at Ford Field, puts up a strong showing against Iowa
and can say, hey, we were one officials call from
making that Bowl game that everyone wanted. Year three can

(17:38):
be better than year two. We're going to get some players.
We're not going to spend thirty two million dollars on
a buyout.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Do you think anyone would buy that?

Speaker 4 (17:50):
Well? I think what it all comes down to, Jack,
is you'll all the money, like you always say. I
think that this was ultimately going to come down to
you know, if you saw today the Missigan State added
another but I can't remember his name. I think he's
last his Wolf or something like that from Purdue. And

(18:12):
he's going to be, you know, another cock in the
athletic department. And you know, I mean they're they're putting
a lot of a lot of officials in the athletic
department to you know, basically figure out a way to
make more money than that. And you know they're spending there.

(18:32):
Now are they going to continue spending? What I mean
by that is are they going to actually put the
dollars together by al Jonathan Smith or you know, even
Jonathan Smith to leave on his own, you know, if
the kitchen's too hot, and hey, you know there's maybe

(18:55):
a deal being broke through there. I mean, he can
come he wanted to.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
Yeah, we're having I think a little trouble with Bob's phone.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Are you hearing him? Okay?

Speaker 1 (19:07):
There?

Speaker 4 (19:09):
What's that?

Speaker 3 (19:10):
Okay? Do you hear me coming in and out? I think, well, it's.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
The cell phone and he's on the road, so yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:16):
Yeah, yeah, yeah it is.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
How about now can hear it.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
A little better? A little better? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (19:21):
Okay, yeah, I'm his passion bright. So know what what
I'm saying. What I'm saying is is that you know,
the question is how much money do they have? You know?

Speaker 3 (19:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (19:31):
I mean that is that what they're willing to do.
Spend the thirty three million dollars, you know, that's that's
what the buy up going to take. And you know
they're doing all that's hiring within the athletic department, so
they've obviously got some money to do that.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
That's the question is they're taking the money they do
have and trying to get people who can bring in
more money that they're not just going to wake up
and find on the doorstep someone's gonna leave their day.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Have to go out get it.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
And so Jay Batt is investing in people he thinks
can can do that.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
But it takes money to do that as well.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
And even if you settle with Jonathan Smith, then you
take care of that staff, you have to pay for
a new coach and the kind of coach that most
fans want, the ones who are going to get everyone excited.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Those guys are not going to come cheap.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
I mean some of the names I've heard, you know,
I get that guy, We'll get that guy. Well, why
would that a person like that leave a program that's
successful or walk into whatever this is here currently and
know this is not a quick fix and do it
for less money, it's probably not going to happen. And
to get a first rate staff, that's going to cost money.

(20:50):
To get more players and quality players Big ten players.
We just talked about Michigan State's Big Ten all Big
Ten candidates. You have a punter and you might have
a linebacker and that is about it.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
Maybe maybe you.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Would have a center who could get honorable mentioned, but
that's that's really it. So and Light of that, you
have a huge talent gap against the teams you are
trying to catch. Bob, I always refer back to last
year's NFL Draft, Michigan State played Ohio State and Oregon

(21:30):
in the span of six states. Those teams had twenty
four players drafted. Michigan State had one offensive lineman taken
in round six. So good luck trying to win those
kinds of matchups in Michigan A year ago had three
players taken in the top thirteen and they lost five games.

Speaker 4 (21:51):
So well, you know, go ahead, No, I know exactly
what you're saying. I mean, you have, like you know,
we've always kidd saying that probably Ohio State's second team
would be the starting could start at Michigan State, you know.
I mean, there's a lot of talent out there, and
Michigan State is not going to be on the same

(22:12):
level as Oregon, Ohio State. You know, I'm not sure
who's who's number three Indiana right now. But you know,
how long is that gonna last? I'm not so sure
that will last forever. You know, I think things are sifflicult, uh,
you know, with the school like that, but I think
things will always stay to save at Ohio State and

(22:33):
Oregon because they got people with deep pockets there. And
you know, it's not to say Michigan State doesn't have people,
you know, that have a lot of money. It's just that,
you know, the ones that are for those other schools,
they have a lot more money. So you know, I really,
I really don't know what to make. I know a
lot of people why Jonathan Smith gone, I'm not so

(22:56):
sure he's gonna be god, you know, uh yeah, boy.
It's a tough call.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
And you know, if you don't have the money, if
you can't raise the money to affect the buyout and
do the other things you need to do, then it's
really a moot point. And you know, then they're just
gonna write it out or ride it a little longer.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
And I know what the fan interest is going to be.
It will be a lot of apathy.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
It will be a lot of people just frankly pissed
off about it. But I don't know what the choice
is if you don't have the money. Well, I mean,
I know a lot of people would love to drive
a Lamborghini. You know they're driving forward.

Speaker 4 (23:35):
Well, I think a lot of you know, a lot
of it has to do with the window dressing in
a sense. And what I mean by that is, you
know they're looking, they're they're watching other football games. They're
seeing the other head coaches with fiery typo, you know,
attitudes on your sideline. And then is Jhonathan Smith and

(23:55):
they're basically his you know, his demeanor on the sideline
as being the reason that the team is not doing
as well. And you know some of the play calling
by you know, the offensive coordinator that's been suspected that.
So you know, I I totally understand missions sat fat
in terms of them, you know, not being happy with

(24:18):
the results. And you know, my personal preference would be
if if they make a change, I'm not calling for
them to fire time. I never would do that. But
you know, I if I were making a choice, I
don't know, I'd be picking the pulling up with and
that would that would be Pat with Cheryld. I think
he'd come back. He tried to prove everybody that he

(24:40):
was a great coach and he's got player. You know,
I've I've covered enough games of Pat fitz Jerrold over
the years. I know how he is. I see how
he is and you know, the sideline I hear him
in my locker room after, you know, as we're waiting
for the press conferences. The locker room is right there
by the press room. You hear his speeches and that

(25:01):
I mean, yeah, I you know somebody like that. But again,
you have to add up, you know, having a good
coordinator on offensive.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
Well, you need the money before you can even talk
about browsers.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
Until you have that. It's all.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
It's all a mood point, Bob. Thanks so much for
your time on the way back. I don't know what
else you were going to do. Frankly, just look at
road signs. But we will see you shortly over at
Breslin Center, Michigan State Colgate coming up in a couple hours.
