Speaker 2 (00:06):
Combining a team of reporters, columnists and commentators.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Are you serious?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Jack Ebling has brought thought provoking discussion.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
What are you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
That's a day coaching the same.

Speaker 4 (00:19):
Opinion customer, the one who decides when the future gets here?

Speaker 5 (00:22):
Oh no, check the report?

Speaker 6 (00:28):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 7 (00:29):
That game was fixed? And overall infotainment.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
I'll take Jim Barbara would done? Prasecuda Criminaccia.

Speaker 8 (00:39):
Quiet, please exactly fifteen seconds We'll be on the air.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Thanks, big fellow.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Don't you ever come.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Back here again? No arguments. Those are called ashtans.

Speaker 7 (00:48):
So buckle up.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Are you talking to me?

Speaker 7 (00:51):
It's time for the Drive with Jack Ebling.

Speaker 8 (00:54):
Yeah, for some reason or another, who signed a little
Cola radio the right afternoon in Michigan and beyond. And
welcome to the Drive with Jack the Spotlight Radio Network.
Jack Eblin here in the Jim Keaton limo heading back
from Comerica Park following a seven to win for the Tigers,

(01:17):
a sweep of the Houston Astros. And I'm here with
some guys that you know very well. On the show Bluebelly,
Tom I brought as partner for twenty three and a
half years. Jay Green a fixture. He is our cleanup
hitter each week on Friday afternoon. Fred Thompson probably the
most loyal listener and remote attende we have had with

(01:40):
this show. And Jim Keaton, of course, the Hall of
Famer from Lansing, Eastern and Arizona State and the NFL,
and I know everyone in the city of Detroit. We
were also joined by Richard Kincaid and Detroit correspondent, and
he met us there when we hear from him a
little bit later. But gentlemen, this was a different Tiger's

(02:05):
team than the one that I had seen in four
losses this year. This was your first appearance coming back
from the chancer rehab. I know you've been looking forward
to this. Are you the one that brought the Tiger's look?

Speaker 4 (02:19):
I think so? You know, Jack, I don't think I've
been to co America in five years. It's been a while,
and I forgot how awesome that ballpark is, especially to
know certain people. They can get you into some pretty
nice seats.

Speaker 6 (02:33):
That helped today.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
But I mean the Tigers jumped out of the right on
the shoot six and it was fun and relaxing and
great environment. Later iving crowd.

Speaker 8 (02:44):
But yeah, h I love that. I love that ballpark
and I like to seem a lot.

Speaker 6 (02:51):
Fred Uh.

Speaker 8 (02:52):
We had pretty good seats, not bad up in the
third deck just behind home plate, but the seat improvement
program works, and we wound up right behind home plate
in some Gucci seats under the overhang. No rain, and
we'd have to worry about dodging that. But the Astros

(03:12):
had to worry about dodging walks and couldn't do that
in the first inning. Next thing you know, fran bur
Veldez hasn't got a guy out and Tigers have six runs.

Speaker 9 (03:24):
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It was a
lot of fun to watch. The Tigers took their uh,
took their took their walks, took advantage of the Astros
not being the greatest fielding team in the world, and
loll and hold it's six nothing and Saint Cruise control.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (03:39):
The Astros thence a walk up on Saturday, went thirty
and two thirds innings without scoring a run. I mean,
if they were shut out on Funday, they were shut
out on Monday and Tuesday by the Tigers and and
nothing and won nothing losses and then down today and

(04:00):
it took home run again in the fourth inning before they.

Speaker 6 (04:05):
Tallied Jay Green.

Speaker 8 (04:07):
This is your second trip to Comerica Park. Now your
record is one one, so you're also allowed to come
back for the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, and I will look forward to that for sure.
I'm glad that they had a better showing today than
they had the last time I was here. I'll steel
a lot better and don't feel that it was meat.
So I'm all for.

Speaker 6 (04:25):
The Jim Keaton.

Speaker 8 (04:28):
We saw Charlie Morton today and he looked pretty good.
Gave up the one home run, but five hits for
the Astros, and he was in command most of the way.
Not bad for forty one years old.

Speaker 10 (04:41):
No, not at all.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Enjoyed watching him. He was in command of.

Speaker 10 (04:44):
His fastball, had his breaking ball working, moved his own
and then let them hit it. He didn't try to
do everything himself by striking him out. He moved the
ball around, let him hit it, and guys may play.

Speaker 8 (04:58):
So, Tom, you know a little bit about the Houston Astros.
You worked in Texas. You're familiar with the Astros history
and when they broke through and started winning championships and
with the sign stealing and Ojosel Twove wearing the monitor. A. J. Hinch,
by the way, was the manager of the Astros, and

(05:18):
that's been conveniently forgotten by a lot of Tigers fans.
But the fact that the Astros look so impotent in
this series, we're talking about being outscored eighteen to two,
What does that say? Can you make any conclusions from that?

Speaker 6 (05:36):
I can't.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Maybe they had grandiose anticipation of this series that they would.
You know, this is a big series for both while
it's going in three game set and boom boom boom,
all went back trying nothing thing the other night started
it out. But you know it's Josel Tuve. It's so funny.
Everyy boos him. I mean, I mean so vietname. I

(05:57):
mean people are booming him not even knowing why they're
booing him. I mean, it just became really chic to
boot the guy, whereas I mean you could have booed
your own manager as much as Boot. I mean, I mean,
for that sign steiling, I guess that's the team of
the week, isn't it sign stealing? But uh it was.

Speaker 8 (06:14):
It was.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
It was fun and the Astros looked like at certain times,
but they didn't want to be there, like, ye, get
it out of here and let's start over.

Speaker 8 (06:25):
Jim, you were talking about this last night after the game.

Speaker 11 (06:28):
We've got to get away afternoon game, and players after
a game like last night, they're not gonna go right
back and go to sleep.

Speaker 8 (06:40):
That may go to bed, but they're not necessarily going
to go to sleep. And did you think that the
Astros checked out early?

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (06:47):
I think you know a lot of times in baseball,
baseball is a very routine game. Uh, it's also a
routine game. After the game and being late innings last night,
they went to get something to eat, and they went
to get something to drink, and then when the young
man ran into the centerfield wall in for a centing, Yeah,

(07:09):
they said, okay, let's get out of here before we
hurt anybody out.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (07:13):
Yeah, a Fred.

Speaker 8 (07:14):
When you think about these teams and the outlook going in, Yeah,
the Tigers had an eight game or eight and a
half game or nine they want It's changing all the
time over the Guardians. Now, the Royals actually have moved
ahead of the Guardians where I expect they will finish
in second place. But for Houston this probably meant more

(07:38):
because they have the Mariners right on their heels, and
if Houston had any hope of having the second best
record in the American League and not having to play
in the wildcard round, the plan was not to be
swept by the Tigers.

Speaker 6 (07:54):
Now you're right.

Speaker 9 (07:54):
About to have and you look at the the Astros.
You see their lineup, and you know they got Career
and Tanya, and how you may you think, how don't
they get set out three games in a row with
which kind is kind of power they've got? And so
that's it's like they probably got ends started pressing.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Do you say this go bad?

Speaker 9 (08:13):
So they get beat ten.

Speaker 8 (08:13):
Nothing, that's so fun.

Speaker 9 (08:15):
They get beat one nothing, they got their best pitcher,
gets out duel well even the leading with Google.

Speaker 8 (08:23):
And then they've got a couple of games to score.

Speaker 9 (08:25):
Don't do it, and all of a sudden, you know
they're swept right out of town. Nice to see if
the Tiger band.

Speaker 8 (08:31):
It was a later arriving, early departing afternoon crowd. And
Jay Green, I'm sorry that in these two games this
year we have not been able to give you any drama,
any late game excitement. They're not all like this.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Trust me, I'm good with that because I'm drama free anyway,
So I'll like to see that things are definite and
don't have to worry and don't have to be on
the ends of my seat. I'll get enough of that
with my football and off the ball team.

Speaker 8 (09:01):
So all right, now, after a second trip to co America,
you didn't get the tour you got the first time
from the Burmans. You didn't get to pose with the
big Tiger out front, you didn't get to jump with
out kline and left field. But based on these two experiences,
what would you tell someone who has not been to

(09:22):
a Tiger's game this year or ever about the experience?

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Oh? So them, there was definitely something that they needed
to experience. If the park is beautiful, the atmosphere is beautiful,
wonderful people walking around everywhere, there's definitely something that you
need the experience. And it appears to be really a
bad seat in the whole stadium.

Speaker 8 (09:45):
There certainly weren't any bad seats where we were for
the last six innings. I can tell you that thanks
to Jim Keaton and a new best friend someone that
he is reacquainted with Jay, there was some when you
saw it today. Besides all the people who kept yelling
go green at you. Maybe they know your name. But

(10:08):
you also saw the Tiger's mascot pause and I don't
think you two had a chance to exchange phone numbers.
But what did you make of that? Do you want
to wear that costume?

Speaker 9 (10:18):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (10:19):
I never even knew the Tiger's had a mascot. I
guess them, Mama and tol me. The tiger was like
the Tiger's maskout so I actually see if they had
a maskot was ball and bottling him because I've never
knew they.

Speaker 8 (10:30):
Had a manth cut bred. If you had a choice
at Comerica Park, would you rather wear the mascot outfit
for one game and have that experience or would you
rather work the ground crew and handle the hose before
the game?

Speaker 9 (10:50):
Well, thinking back Staton Tiger Stadium, they had a groundskey
friend I wanted.

Speaker 8 (10:54):
His name was Herby, Yes, and he was a Herby Redmond.

Speaker 9 (10:57):
He was a huge fan favorite. And if I could
have a crow, can't he prett pratt ain't.

Speaker 8 (11:02):
Gonna happen when I'm batting, so not gonna let me bat.
I'll rank out the infield Normally when they do that,
it's only because you're about to step into a manhole cover, right,
Fred Reckon. So Fred, in terms of what you saw,
what happened to the ledge that some fans were on
when the Tigers dropped twelve or thirteen, Well you saw

(11:23):
it last week.

Speaker 9 (11:24):
They play some good teams, swept a couple of good teams.
It's a lot easier your nine and a half games
up as opposed to five. You feel a lot more comfortable, and.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
You see you coming up.

Speaker 9 (11:36):
We've got a fairly easy I say we the Tigers
have a fairly easy schedule going out and they just
take care of business they've got. They should have this
wrapped up fairly easy, all right.

Speaker 8 (11:48):
Fred Thompson, I'll let the record show is not a
member of the media, and I'm not surprised when the
Tigers are doing as well as they are the wedns
DYDIY American League that he uses the wi out, including himself.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
Tom.

Speaker 8 (12:02):
You know when the Tigers were skidding and a freeball
without a parachute. I never heard thom since say we.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
Now wait we come to them?

Speaker 8 (12:11):
They whatever. Yeah. The week we comes in with als
WS Jim, we talked about Charlie Morton his role on
the bound today. But who else impressed you? Who did
you think played well for Detroit?

Speaker 6 (12:24):
I thought all the guys.

Speaker 10 (12:26):
I thought it was a d ah.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
And they still was engaged and hit the ball well.

Speaker 8 (12:34):
Uh, played good defense.

Speaker 10 (12:37):
It was an overall team victory.

Speaker 8 (12:39):
I mean they just kept moving the line up. Everybody
who needed to get a hit.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Park got a hit, Green got it hit. It was
just you know, when you you come through what you
need to come through, and they.

Speaker 10 (12:51):
Did that good job of that in the first inning today.

Speaker 8 (12:54):
Dingler with that triple in the first setting, and it
showed extra base power. Thought he might have a homer,
the Dingler dinger, but that did not happen. Nonetheless, Eire's
had a lot of guys playing winning baseball today, taking
long counts, drawing walks, hitting the extra base, being an

(13:16):
alert on balls that got past the catcher coming into
store and Brambourg raaldes Fred this guy was out there
on the mount a long time in the first ennen.

Speaker 9 (13:30):
I was amazed that he got made it at the
fifth inning when you saw they had people warring up
in the first inning. The last thing you want in
the third game of a series to have guys up
pitching in the first inning to get shot out of that,
but he somehow at least got through five. For him,
I'm surprised and impress he is that.

Speaker 8 (13:50):
I thought maybe he could make baseball history. There are
twenty eight pitches before he got anybody out. I think
anyone has ever gone that far with retiring a batter
and won the game.

Speaker 9 (14:02):
I'm sure it's happened, but winning the game probably not.

Speaker 8 (14:07):
I'll guarantee you that, Jay, What about the crowd today?
Maybe not as big as some people thought the way
that Tigers are playing, but it is an afternoon game.
There are a few people who work, and here it
is middle of the week and school is starting again
in a lot of districts. What did you make of that?

(14:28):
Did you think that where the Tigers are that it
would be even a fuller crowd?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
I definitely thought that tell the word it all, it
would be a full of trouble. But also considering that
it was a one o'clock game, a school is started backing,
Like you said before, I have to work. I'll kind
of understand why it wasn't as many people there. I'll
think if it was a weakid probably would have been
a whole lot more people there even lose thay.

Speaker 8 (14:53):
Hey Ron one thing that you can tell in terms
of attendance, and every team needs it. I was watching
some of the padres last night and they've went close
to thirty capacity crowds. Maybe not every seat is full,
but over forty thousand people will Petco. But if you

(15:15):
look at where the Tigers are now, they're not drawing
gigantic crowds. And it depends on the team that's coming in.
I think Houston is a pretty good draw, but they
don't bring anybody. It's not like when they play Toronto
and all the people come over from Canada, or they
play Cleveland and they get a big crowd, or anytime

(15:37):
the Yankees or the Red Sox are in town that's
automatically good for another five to ten thousand people. So
it wasn't a deal where you couldn't walk up and
get tickets, and it wasn't so crowded that you couldn't
sit somewhere maybe better than you should. So it was
a fun experience again for all of us. It was

(15:58):
something that Tiger's now can use moving forward. Rob do
you get a chance to watch much of this on television?

Speaker 7 (16:06):
I did, and I got a question for all you guys.

Speaker 12 (16:09):
Now that we've seen these trade deadline acquisitions a few times, right,
how would you grade them?

Speaker 4 (16:19):
Now?

Speaker 12 (16:19):
I know there was a lot of talk about the
trade deadline and a lot of people had opinions about
what the Tigers did.

Speaker 7 (16:25):
Good, bad, are indifferent.

Speaker 12 (16:27):
So when you look at guys like Finagain and Charlie Morton,
and of course Paddock, who's struggling a little bit, I
think everyone would agree. How would you what would you
give the Tigers for the trade deadline acquisitions that you've seen.

Speaker 8 (16:41):
I guess in terms of the editions themselves, i'd give
them a C plus. In terms of what they got
for value, It didn't really give up much. So maybe
a B or B minus. Yeah, maybe a B minus.
I don't think that Chris Paddock needs to go back
out there. I've seen enough of him. There's a reason
the Twins let him go, and Minnesota knew that they'd

(17:04):
be facing him twice more so that was two w's
for the Twins. Charlie Morton, he's been hot and cold,
but his DRA coming into this game this year was
more than two runs higher than Franburg Rout did and
Sid's pitch a good game today. He got a couple
of breaks in the first inning, hard hit ball right

(17:28):
at guys could have scored a couple of runs. But
I think what Jim said is very true.

Speaker 6 (17:33):
Rob.

Speaker 8 (17:34):
Once the Tigers got up six to nothing, it's like
Houston said, what's next? Where do we go? Checking the schedule?
So that was a factor, And I think they were
swinging a lot of pitches. Umpires were calling a lot
of strikes two. They obviously had dinner plans. So for

(17:55):
Morton it turned out to be a pretty good outing
against the team that he who used to have fact
play for AJ Hinch was one of AJ Hinch's favorites
back when Houston won their first World championship. So I
would say from that standpoint, split results on the two
starting pitchers, and Finnegan has been good so far. Maybe

(18:19):
that's great, but good. And our good friend Marty McKinnon,
my best friend, who said he's watched Finnegan pitch hundreds
of times as a Washington National season ticket holder, said
that you know he's capable, but he's not gonna scare anybody,
not the lights out closer. He's never gonna win the
role Ades Relief Award. But he's a guy who could

(18:42):
probably help the Tigers. And I'm not sure whether they're
going to have him closing, or will Best closing, or
it'll be situational. But you can always use another arm
in the pen. So from that standpoint, that was a
pretty good pickup. Didn't add another bat, but sometimes you
don't need one. Last night Tigers didn't need a bat.

(19:04):
All they needed was the ability to not swing in
the tenth inning and those three walks, scored without getting
a hit and won the game. Won nothing, and then
on to the sleep of Houston. But it's a very
important win, rap because this series means that should Houston

(19:27):
surge in September.

Speaker 12 (19:28):
And tiebreakers to be had here, right, I mean major
tiebreakers for the playoffs exactly.

Speaker 8 (19:34):
The tiebreakers now are all in Detroit's favor. So Detroit
really had to go three and three in the six
games with Houston to win the tiebreakers. They came in
down two wins to one in the series the three
games in Houston, and now the Tigers own the season
series four to two. So that tells you that they're

(19:56):
in a pretty good position. Should be all right as
far as as the next step for them, and I
think that's staying healthy and getting some of the Kings
worked out so that they can be hitting on all
cylinders when they start postseason played. But certainly it looks
like they're going to have the benefit of not playing
the wildcard round, and I think that can be critical.

Speaker 12 (20:21):
Yeah, you wonder, right, because we look at the Lions
last year.

Speaker 7 (20:24):
I know this is apples and oranges.

Speaker 12 (20:25):
Football and baseball are totally different, but remember everybody was
so it was so important for the Lions to get
that first round by right, and so here are the
Tigers kind of going in that momentum. You just hope
that we won't see what we saw with the Lions.
Of course, that's a whole different story with the Lions
being so injured. If the Tigers getting healthy, that could

(20:46):
be totally different. But it just kind of reminded me
that how important these quote unquote first round byes are.
But yet that Brenton brought me back to what happened
to the Lions last year. But like I said, apples
and oranges here, But yeah, I think it would be
very important for the Tigers, very critical, and especially depending
on how healthy they are coming into that that will

(21:08):
be so on.

Speaker 7 (21:10):
The right track.

Speaker 12 (21:11):
And of course now they go to Kansas City, which
you know divisional games is very important still for the Tigers.

Speaker 7 (21:17):
Kansas City kind of surging.

Speaker 8 (21:19):
Right, Yeah, Kansas City was one four in a row
and past Cleveland. I said all along, I thought Kansas
City was the second best team in the league, but
for about three months all their wins seem to be
with three runs or less. So now they're starting to
hit the ball a little bit better, made a couple

(21:41):
of moves at the trade deadline. Even a guy like
Mike Yastrimsky who came over from the Giants. Carl's Strandson
has been very important to this team now batting lead off,
and Bobby Witz turned to pick it up again. So
I think Kansas City, I don't know if they're going

(22:02):
to get into the playoff race. They think they are,
but they're coming to Detroit now for three games. They
have another game tonight and a game tomorrow, so the
Tigers have rest on their side by the time the
Royals get here. But I would think that in the
next two weekends, first three games here and then three

(22:23):
back in KSE at Kaufmann Stadium that Kansas City needs
to win at least four of the six and maybe
five of the six against Detroit. So we don't know
how aj Hinch is going to use Trek's Schooble this
week and down the stretch. A lot of pitchers go

(22:45):
every fifth day now, but they have been very cautious
with schoobl and with days off, they may stretch him
out to six days. If that happens, he would not
face Kansas City Sunday. He would wait till the series
after that, So that's important too, And and maybe it'll

(23:07):
be a play it by year deal and we'll see
how things go the beginning of that series. And it's
nice to always have Trek Scooble there as a stopper,
a guy who can go in and if you have
a two or three game losing streak, he's certainly capable
of riding the ship.

Speaker 12 (23:24):
And as a city two games out right now of
the last wild card playoff spot, so they're most certainly
fighting for something as.

Speaker 8 (23:33):
Well, coming up on your Red Sox.

Speaker 12 (23:38):
Yeah, well, Yankees got the top wild card right now,
then the Red Sox and then the marin so they're
they're looking up at them, and they are three games
back of the of the the Red Sox, so we'll see,
but most certainly they are playing for something here. As
we get closer and closer to fall baseball every timing year, I.

Speaker 8 (24:01):
Still think there's a good chance that the Mariners are
going to wind up passing Houston and taking the West title,
and then in that case it would be Kansas City
trying to catch Houston instead of Seattle. But we'll see
how that all shakes out. Kansas City is a team

(24:23):
that has playoff experience after last year. Remember that was
a strange postseason where the American League Central had three
teams in the playoffs. Guardians won the division and then
went on and played the Yankees and the Alcs, but
the Royals and the Tigers both came in as wildcard teams,

(24:46):
kind of like what we see now in the AL
East with the Yankees and the Red Sox trying to
do that behind first place Toronto in Cleveland.

Speaker 12 (24:57):
We mentioned, you mentioned the Guardians. They're two and a
half back of the last wild card spots. So AL
Central not going quietly into the night, right.

Speaker 8 (25:08):
Yeah, But you know, I'm not sure that the AL
Central is going to have more than one.

Speaker 7 (25:13):
Right, No, no, no, no, I wouldn't that way.

Speaker 8 (25:21):
In fact, you know, you saw what the Indians were
doing at the trade deadline, and they were trading players,
they were trying to acquire players. You know, Beaber now
is going to be pitching for the Blue Jays. He's
backed off the injured list and looks like he could
be a key factor for Toronto down the stretch.

Speaker 12 (25:43):
Yeah, the Guardians are four and six in their last
ten games, as opposed to Kansas City eight and two,
So that kind of tells you right there. But you know,
still got some time. We'll see if Cleveland can get hot.
But yeah, I agree, I wouldn't expect. I would be
actually a little surprised if another AL Central team gets
into the playoffs. But most certainly at least they're in

(26:06):
the hunt for all those AL Central fans out there.

Speaker 8 (26:10):
Well, we're gonna take a quick break. We will be
back and we'll be talking more baseball, but also we're
gonna talk some football. We'll talk some college football, pro football,
prep football. Sorry, Fred, I know you want to do
a two hour baseball show, We're gonna we're gonna talk
some football as well. In Michigan State now nine days

(26:31):
away from the season opener on Friday night, the twenty
ninth against Western Michigan and one night later University of

Speaker 8 (31:06):
Welcome back. It is the Driveway Jet Spotlight Radio Network.
Jack Kebling here, Walton robbed Back in the studio, and I.

Speaker 17 (31:16):
Am in the Jim Keaton, Limo Jeniko would call this
a clown car with the passengers we have, but nonetheless,
we are on the way home from Tiger's victory today
and a sweep of the division leading Houston Astros team
that the.

Speaker 8 (31:35):
Tigers also just spend last year in the first round
of the playoffs, So a big day for the Tigers.
But gentlemen, I want to talk a little football. This
time of year, we can't go more than a half
hour without mentioning pig skins. But Tom, a lot going on,
and you were telling me there might be some injury

(31:56):
news with the University of Michigan.

Speaker 4 (31:57):
What do we know, Well, I haven't seen it confirmed
yet from the University of Michigan Athletics. But Andrew Baboloa,
the outstanding five star tackle who is competing very very
good for that story, nod Suposly got injured a couple
of days ago. I don't know anything about the details,
but it's doesn't sound good. And boy, if you have

(32:21):
a freshman who's learning that tough position of offensive lineman
and making progress to the potential start, that's really unfortunate
for him as a raw talent. And we'll see how
that goes. It's not nothing's definite, but that that was
the setback. Although Michigan did land the number one running
back in the nation for the twenty twenty sixty class,
so that's that's good. So it wasn't a totally bad week.

Speaker 8 (32:44):
And tell us a little bit about both of those guys.
Is it babalola? How do you say babolola?

Speaker 4 (32:51):
Yeah, I've already pronounced both ways. Big kid begging, strong
and fast and adapt well. And uh, you know, offensive
line is a critical position for Michigan because last year,
you know, with they had some poor quarterback playing, their
offensive line took a while to merge together. It even

(33:11):
did in twenty twenty three. It took out the year
to come together. But they got a lot of competition
on that side, you know, on the offensive line.

Speaker 8 (33:21):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
And then the recruiting thing was the saving on Hyder
is a kid out of Virginia. He's a number nine
overall recruit in the country of all positions, number one
running back. And when you're going against Georgia, Alabama, Ohio
State and Tennessee and you plug him, that's a good get.

Speaker 8 (33:41):
And you describe him a kind of back his five.

Speaker 4 (33:43):
Ten too, you know two, you know, compact, explosive, a
little bit of Blake Krum with maybe a little more
breakaway speed. I don't know, well, I mean, I here
I'm getting I'm I'm breaking my rule. Yeah, I'm breaking
my rule. I don't know why I did that, because
I until they signed in December. It's almost a.

Speaker 6 (34:04):
Curse to talk about it.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
But this was this was a surprise, and also it
got people's attention. Michigan from a pr standpoint, it's a
horrific week last week, and yet you know, and it
was some recruiting restrictions and things like that, but doesn't
look like his face in the Wolverines at all.

Speaker 8 (34:23):
No, and the stigma or stay the Enst investigation hadn't
bothered Michigan recruiting. They had a top ten class.

Speaker 4 (34:33):
You know.

Speaker 8 (34:33):
Obviously Savian Hyder was not turned away by the fact
that we're going to get a fine and one game
show cause audition.

Speaker 4 (34:44):
So that's him, doesn't No, and I have something to
do nil moneyes or anything like that. So yeah, I
think once the season starts from Michigan standpoint, that'd be
good to get the season started and and then they're
gonna be under the microscope hugely the second game of
the year when they go to Norman, Oklahoma, because everybody's waiting,

(35:07):
a lot of haters out there and they want they
want to see Michigan lose, and that will be a
challenging game to go out and play the Sooners on
Saturday night.

Speaker 8 (35:15):
Does Michigan win that game? Huh boy?

Speaker 4 (35:18):
I wish you could ask me that a week from
Saturday after I have to see how they look. I think.
I think their defense will keep them in that game
long enough, and I think they'll pull that one out.
Something tells me they will. Oklahoma is preseason eighteenth. I
know nothing about them. They're losing season last year and
yet to beat Alabama home on a Saturday night seven

(35:40):
by seventeen points. So get tough environment.

Speaker 8 (35:43):
Well, you know what that game is gonna be. Both
those teams beat Alabama last year.

Speaker 4 (35:48):
Yeah, yeah, they did, and Alabama you know it wasn't
vintage Alabama, but Alabama still Alabama. Alabama had a lot
of talent. They went on the NFL. So it's so
hard to tell, so hard to predict what's going to happen.
Michigan State is going to be interesting because they have
no expectations. And I'll talking to Jake Green about this

(36:12):
walking out of America. You know, this could be a
little twenty twenty one where they had no expectations and
they had a big roadway. They beat Miami, yes, and
so the game you're going to out in La at
Colseum maybe that's the Miami game that propels this team
and they have a really good season.

Speaker 8 (36:32):
Jay, You've been talking about this and picking up on
some people the parallels this year and the twenty twenty one.
I think Michigan State has a more established quarterback now
than did that year. So for Michigan State, maybe a

(36:53):
few more questions answered at that point. Heading into the
Northwestern game, no one had any idea what Kenneth Walker
the third could do. You you and some other thought
he could be thinking good, But I don't think anyone said, well,
you know, he's going to be the best running back
in the country, et cetera. So Jay, what are you

(37:14):
telling people? You were having discussions today at the game
with people asking you about this team.

Speaker 6 (37:19):
What are you telling them?

Speaker 3 (37:20):
I'm telling them that I'm very confident going into this season.
I like what I have been seen, and I feel
like we are playing a lot faster and with a
lot more confidence. And I just have a couple of
questions that I need answer to to really see what
we're going to be the season.

Speaker 8 (37:36):
And what are those questions?

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Mainly what the kicker is going to be That's the
main thing, because you know, and I know how important
the kicker he is, especially when when needing to win
close games. So if we have a solid kicker, I'm
very high on what this season can be.

Speaker 8 (37:55):
Michi and State had a very good kicker last year,
a guy who I field goal against Iowa, but but
he did miss the twenty five yarder at the beginning
of the game against Michigan and that really set the
tone for that game some of the mistakes that proved
to be Michigan State's undoing. And when you have a kicker,

(38:16):
you know, we talk about Michigan and the place kicker
Dominic Nevada as seen as the first team All American.
That makes a tremendous difference, makes.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
A huge difference.

Speaker 4 (38:28):
We've seen kickers we wepons.

Speaker 3 (38:30):
Michigan had a kicker before the one that's playing with
the forty liners who was a great weapon for him
because while they got over the fifty, was the chance
with him to get at least reports on kickens. The
kicking game is very crucial, not only the taking game
of special team in general, but the kicking games can
add points. So I think that's very important. That'd be

(38:52):
something that we are able to do well.

Speaker 8 (38:55):
I'm gonna have a chance to see Michigan State play.
Obviously the games, but several road games, including the USC
game Tom mentioned, And then we're gonna go down to Indiana.
Right the play is, we're gonna go to Bloomington, and
I already have a plane ticket to go to Minnesota.
Right now, it looks like I'm going to be skipping

(39:18):
the Nebraska game. And Tom, have you been to Nebraska?

Speaker 3 (39:23):
No?

Speaker 4 (39:24):
You know, Now, there's a lot more Big ten than
he said. I haven't been to that you. I'm in
the Rose Bowl. I usually lay home game too, so
I haven't been to Washington and I haven't been to
the Coliseum. So there's a lot of them and have
not been to Nebraska. And do they still cheer for
the opposition.

Speaker 8 (39:43):
When they comes depends on the opposite.

Speaker 4 (39:46):
Okay, that was my next question. When Michigan comes out
of tunnel, that's a good question, a good one.

Speaker 8 (39:53):
There may be some signs welcome field, big Ones, welcome
to the second best team in nineteen ninety seven. H
I can tell you that they didn't cheer for Colorado,
really didn't cheer for Oklahoma. But the other they do. Yeah,
they used to cheer their what's off for Kansas when

(40:13):
they'd come in. Oh yeah, you know, yeah yeah, and uh,
every time I've been out there, I can't believe the
Nebraska hospitality. They talked about Nebraska nice one of the
slogans for the state, and it is all that and more.

Speaker 4 (40:30):
You know, Penn State from a fan standpoint, where I'm going.
I'm going to Penn State both as media and fan standpoint.
Penn standers really nice too. I mean they were ninety
nine last time out there, and uh for Tom Brady beat.

Speaker 8 (40:46):
Him at the West second.

Speaker 4 (40:47):
But uh, boy, you go to Columbus, go to East Lansing,
depending on who's walks in there. I mean there's a
lot of you know, fans that just want a half.
I mean I was a tough place, very tough because
it's that bull ring thing we talked about, so close
you're they're on top of you.

Speaker 8 (41:07):
Oregon is like that too. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (41:09):
I was in the stadium, so uh and you've went okay,
So let me ask the questions you Yeah, what missing
big ten venues?

Speaker 8 (41:17):
You should off to go.

Speaker 4 (41:18):
To click them all in or we got them all.

Speaker 8 (41:22):
I have that same U c l A playing in
the road. Boy, I've seen UCLA play at USC in
the coliseum.

Speaker 6 (41:32):
Right.

Speaker 4 (41:33):
Uh so that use a home which I went you
in two thousand. I'll there one hundred and seven degrees,
so you is that the only one?

Speaker 8 (41:41):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (41:44):
Yeah, wow, that's impressing. So you gout you have seventeen
of the eighteen games.

Speaker 8 (41:53):
No, actually I don't because I don't have the new
stadium at Minnesota. But I'll take care of that this year.
I was there before, you know, back when it knows
that's we're playing in the metro Dome.

Speaker 4 (42:04):
Yeah, yeah, I have not been. I've been to Memorial Stadium,
that old Yeah. Yeah, I think I've been to that
one that I never went to, the where the bikes played.
Right now, my question is the play Northwestern and the.

Speaker 8 (42:18):
Road next year? They don't play Northwestern next year or
this oh h because.

Speaker 4 (42:24):
New stadium is coming and I'm looking forward to. Yeah,
that is what they call a boutique stadium. Yeah yeah,
I'm all right small, but you know, kind of like
the seats we are sitting in today, there's going to
be a lot of the seats creature comfort. Yeah. They
want to make them and they want to make the
numbers low at Northwestern at the new Riot Field. Because

(42:46):
of this, all those bigtim alumni bases take over that stadium,
So they want to have a more an even chance
about having a hole field a bandaged less than the numbers.

Speaker 8 (42:58):
Im I counted as about six months ago. So I'm
gonna ask the question. So I said, well, let me
just write some things down here, and I have one
hundred and fifteen stadiums. Do you venture that I been
to pro and team baseball? How do you even calibrate that?
I mean what I just went back through and I said,
if I've been here, here, here, here, Major League baseball
was easy, and then Pro football I did. And then

(43:21):
I went back through the non conference games, the bowl games,
all of those things comes up to one hundred and fifteen.
That is a made Minnesota's new stadium will be one
hundred and sixteen stadiums. If you have a favorite, you've
been in obviously Michigan Stadium, and I know I'm mutually love.

Speaker 4 (43:40):
I mean, I'm you know, it's not you know, Michigan
Michigan Stadium is is you know, it's it's struck just
my school and all that stuff, and it's not the best.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
It's not the.

Speaker 4 (43:51):
Best team and go be a fan, and I'll tell
you that that's not sucking too. They're great, you know,
really high and seats, but you're not comfortable. But you
know what, I when I think back Indiana, you might
think this is weird, But Memorial Stadium I love because

(44:12):
it pitches up real high, very high, and there's not
a bad seat to see. You know.

Speaker 8 (44:19):
Have you been to Assembly Hall now? It's yeah, got
the stadium, yes, and that's got a pitch too, go
way up in the stratus.

Speaker 4 (44:26):
Well, and I'm sat in the balcony there in the
games of Rumor up there.

Speaker 8 (44:29):
Yes, yeah, you think you're in the blimp.

Speaker 4 (44:31):
Yeah, that's but Memorial Stadium and I remember going down
there in the eighties. I man, all the seats are
between you know, but then the yard lines if you will,
and there's no I mean it's like Michigan Stadium flattens
and then arches up.

Speaker 8 (44:48):
But these are all elevators and kind of like Don
Jackson's Fieldhouse where you have all the seats going way
back up. But yeah, but yeah, I think I'm well.

Speaker 4 (44:58):
And that's why I think one of the worst stadiums
I've been to. From a stamp and standpoint is a
rosebull because it's a saucer.

Speaker 3 (45:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (45:07):
You just the higher you go, the further back you go.
And so where is a good seat because you're going
higher for death, but you're going further away.

Speaker 8 (45:18):
That's not good.

Speaker 4 (45:21):
My favorite stadium that's out there, and I've been there
probably several times. Well, you like I like Notre Dame
from outside the stadium and all the build up going in.

Speaker 3 (45:34):
Why do you like?

Speaker 8 (45:35):
I don't. I like a lot of things about Notre Dame.
Some it's gonna state fans if I don't want to
hear that, but.

Speaker 13 (45:40):
I do.

Speaker 8 (45:42):
Respect to the university, the relationship. Without Notre Dame, it's
just to say, never would have gotten into big pan.
I think there's nothing quite like a football weekend in
South Bend, whether you talk about the pep rallies, everything
else that goes with it.

Speaker 18 (45:57):
The walk from the team down Dame Avenue from the grotto,
uh you know, oh yeah yeah, wind five deep there
and then they go in and you get the Irish
guard in the hill.

Speaker 4 (46:12):
You know.

Speaker 8 (46:13):
I just think it's it's Tina and the grass field.
The grass is long. I don't know if you ever
walked down that stadium.

Speaker 7 (46:19):
But yeah, I've been.

Speaker 6 (46:22):
Lesson.

Speaker 4 (46:23):
I I do have to ask you this question. Yeah,
from a Big Ten alumnus and fans standpoint, yeah, you
don't hold any resentment to Notre Dame versus enjoining the
Big Ten?

Speaker 8 (46:36):
Are you a different Well, I wish they would. I
don't understand the logic completely. I think it would be
better for Notre Dame. Randy Kinder is gonna argue with me.
He doesn't believe that, but I think it would be
better for Notre Dame if it were in a conference.
He could still play the military academies if you want

(46:57):
to do that. If you want, yeah, well you we
wouldn't be a Southern cal Guess what you're in the big time.
You can play Southern calg Yeah. Yeah, make that your
protective rivalry.

Speaker 4 (47:04):
Yeah, so that excuse does it work?

Speaker 8 (47:09):
So from that standpoint, and I talk to you about this,
but there is an institutional arrogance at Notre.

Speaker 4 (47:16):
Dame big time, yeah, big time.

Speaker 8 (47:18):
Yeah. Yeah, So that's why I asked you.

Speaker 4 (47:21):
You like a lot of things about Notre Dame. So
I appreciate you acknowledging that.

Speaker 8 (47:27):
Naggert, I think that is a minus.

Speaker 4 (47:28):
That same money yes, yes, Notre Dame is there.

Speaker 8 (47:33):
You know, a lot of people don't know that Notre
Dame is so close to being in Michigan. If they
of Michigan were to annexed ten miles of Indiana, there'd
be three.

Speaker 4 (47:45):
Yeah, you're not far from the border. And you know
it's it's not a bad drive down there for me
Flan Sing or even ad Arbor.

Speaker 8 (47:52):
And you're talking about Joe Patrick.

Speaker 4 (47:54):
Yeah, and his son Gregory is a great five star recruit.
Who who I feel it's you know, Michigan State should
have gotten Notre.

Speaker 8 (48:04):
Dame closer to Kalamazoo.

Speaker 4 (48:06):
Than Yeah, yes, by about you know, maybe twenty minutes. Okay,
so and not that that was a huge factor, but
Notre Dame is really good on official visions, you know,
I mean they do kind of like Kentucky doesn't basketball
talk that it is about just what you said about

(48:30):
ties to a university and how they impact the kids, right,
and finding that more and more and more that where.

Speaker 8 (48:36):
A parent went isn't that much relationship on what a
kid does.

Speaker 4 (48:41):
PJ car not Now I think it used to. I
remember Mark d Antonio once said, at least from his
uh walk on standpoint. He wanted those kids that black,
green and white and would go willing to run through
a brick wall because you know, that's all they've been
thinking about. You need those kind of kids on your team.

(49:02):
I'm sure Jay would agree, but it doesn't seem like
that's an issue. Or and now the walk on thing
is that's getting not totally deleted, but diminished.

Speaker 6 (49:15):
Yes, and so.

Speaker 4 (49:17):
Uh, you know every player counts on that team's in
terms of skeleton.

Speaker 8 (49:21):
I want to ask Jay this question, but first time,
do you know Jay Green's middle name?

Speaker 4 (49:26):
I Go? Is it Jay Go Green? I don't know,
maybe Go.

Speaker 8 (49:31):
I thought it was Bleeds.

Speaker 4 (49:33):
Oh if that works out, Yeah, that works out. He
does sleek green and as a former player, he still
is going to practice sold time and not everyone does that.

Speaker 8 (49:47):
And we know it's easy to spot as all you
have to do is look for the green garb or
this part of the logo and it's probably him. I
want to go back to your recruitment, okay, and when
we talk about how important it was for George Purlis
to pledge to you, not knowing if you would ever

(50:07):
be on the field, and he didn't care, but for you,
that was kind of a deal breaker. You you decided
right then that you were going to be a spark.

Speaker 3 (50:17):
Right, definitely, because it shows some different You know, a
lot of people when you're getting recruited, they you know,
you see all the great things, which is, you know,
because they want you. But for him to really tap
into me as a person meant everything to me. You know,
for me, I just always wanted to be known as

(50:38):
a good person. So for him to offer me a scholarship,
not knowing if I was going to ever be able
to play again, told me what he felt for me
as a person. And that means that that meant everything.

Speaker 8 (50:49):
All right, Jed, truth be told here tooth share in time.
Your buddies from plant are not listening. Spartan dogs aren't
hearing this conversation right now. Did you grow up caring.

Speaker 3 (51:02):
For U of M?

Speaker 8 (51:03):
Are you going to games?

Speaker 9 (51:05):
No?

Speaker 3 (51:05):
I definitely grew up a U of M fan because
that was all that was on TV. That's all I
had access to. On Sundays you would see some Notre
Dame replays, but they weren't in my state. So I
can tell you U of M football history probably better
than a lot of people who claim to be U
of M fans. So I definitely grew up rooting for

(51:25):
U of M. Was recruited by him, and that's kind
of where we lost our way was when they were
recruiting me. Some of the things that they did I
didn't agree with, which.

Speaker 8 (51:34):
Kind of turned me.

Speaker 3 (51:38):
Yeah, I was. I was in a meeting with both
sham Becker and Gary Moehler, and both sham Beckler told
me that it's not about how much they want me,
I should want to come there, which kind of rub
me the wrong way. Not that you know, I needed
my butt kiss or anything like that, but I just
felt like that's not something that you should be telling

(52:00):
somebody who you're trying to impress the ord trot of you.

Speaker 19 (52:03):
So I got a hitchhike on that because I had
my experience was with Bowl and Terrell Burton, and Bow
walked into my mom and dad's living room, and you
have to understand I had already been.

Speaker 8 (52:18):
To Kentucky and U. C.

Speaker 3 (52:21):
L A. And a few other very nice.

Speaker 10 (52:24):
Places, and Bowl walked in and took my mom and
dad's hand, looked at me and say, young man, you
owe it to Michigan to go to Michigan and I said,
I don't know you. Yeah, a word that my dad
slapped before.

Speaker 8 (52:44):
Later, but I was like, I.

Speaker 3 (52:46):
Don't even know you.

Speaker 10 (52:48):
I said, you know, it's because it was the first
time I had ever met Bow and it just kind
of came out. It wasn't wasn't planning. It was just
the way it happened. The and then that was I
told my mom and dad, he ain't no way to
where I'm going to Michigan. I did still take them
tickets to them them games because I took my friends.

Speaker 8 (53:11):
Who were Michigan fans.

Speaker 10 (53:12):
Yeah, and enjoyed the you know, you know, those those
benefits that you get when you are recruit But yeah,
it was it was a It was a.

Speaker 8 (53:22):
Big turnoff, big turnoff. So Bow was over too recruiting
Jay Green and Jim Keaton Jr. And he didn't really
have to recruit Tom Crawford. I'm you were there from
the get go right, your family, Yeah, yeah, four generations
of Michigan grats. I was at Legacy, Yeah, Legacy, and
I was at I remember Bo's.

Speaker 4 (53:44):
First game at Michigan. They played Vanderbilt. It was in
nineteen sixty nine and.

Speaker 8 (53:50):
His last name. Everybody was struggling to pronounce it.

Speaker 4 (53:53):
Yeah, and they won.

Speaker 8 (53:54):
I think it was like forty two fourteen year Romptons.

Speaker 4 (53:57):
And then a few weeks later, right, you know, I
was living I was in age grade at the time.
I went out to the Michigan Michigan State game that
you attended. That your first Michigan Michigan State game if
I'm mistake right, And Dulphy Dorry has changed the entire
offense right during game week and uh man that that

(54:21):
messed up Michigan big time. Don Heismist is running through
there like you know the Sea Party and Bill Triplett
ran the option. Yeah, uh yeah, Michigan lost twenty twelve.
But yeah, I mean, you know Bo you know Bow
was not, you know, a flawless person. I got to

(54:42):
meet him as a student there and also when he retired,
I mean when we were started our show to Michigan,
ohiose state game. We literally had a one on one
with him before the two thousand and three game. Boy
has a different boat that Bruce Falley set up for me,
and it was a different guy than that. You know,
I had the friends of the team out of hearing

(55:02):
Horse Roys.

Speaker 8 (55:03):
Well that both Champ factor was really pretty.

Speaker 4 (55:07):
Good to me.

Speaker 8 (55:08):
A couple of times when I had a chance to
talk to me, came on the show. Uh pearlss set
some things up for me.

Speaker 4 (55:15):
Yeah, they were a good friends, became good friend, that's right.

Speaker 8 (55:18):
And when they had the Kelly pearlis Seci golf, I
would know how to come special Olympics. Yeah, and Bow
would come in for that.

Speaker 4 (55:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (55:27):
And he wasn't a big golfer. George must either terrible,
that's all right. And he was so much more relaxed.
I was waiting for him to hit somebody.

Speaker 4 (55:36):
Well, I mean I got I got, you know, I
you know, I was as a student on the Michigan Daily.
It was hard to get a the Michigan Beach as
they're right, And I splid in there and got a
couple of them. But I and I the way I
did that is I I went out to the the
m Club Van Arborett Weber's. Yeah, And so I would

(56:00):
go out to those things. And I was there when
my fraternity brother, who actually was more of the higher people,
bou pushed him up against the wall because don or,
because my buddy Dan parahass are you ever gonna uh
sign a Kicker a scholarship, and Bo got really pissed

(56:21):
off because Brian Burge will and missed him Keith kicks
against Purdue ross A.

Speaker 8 (56:26):
So I went out there.

Speaker 4 (56:29):
Yeah, all of a sudden, my buddy Dan was on
Channel four news and because he Bo pushed him and
Dance had his that that that paneling Don at Webber's
about holding moly, he's passed up.

Speaker 8 (56:43):
What did Bo do?

Speaker 4 (56:44):
The next year he signed his first scholarship Kicker and
Ali Hajai. Yeah, so A's like, okay, so I'll do
that way.

Speaker 8 (56:53):
We're just peeky students.

Speaker 4 (56:55):
From the Michigan Daily. But you're listening to one of
them and you took cause it that story I've told
him many times, and yeah, he was mad. He was
still mad from Saturday. It was Monday and they didn't
have a press conference.

Speaker 3 (57:10):
Like they do.

Speaker 4 (57:11):
You're like, you got to am and I you have guns.
It was like in the hallway before he went and
talked to the alumni and stuff.

Speaker 8 (57:19):
I said, it was.

Speaker 4 (57:20):
It was a stand up scrum. I will never forget that.

Speaker 8 (57:25):
That's funny. You know when Bow got to an Arker
and Don Cannon had tried to hire some different people.
Joe Paturno was one he looked at. Yeah, yeah, and
he wound up with Bowl a recommendation of several people.
And Bunny Werblin, the Jets owner, and some others had
told him that, you know, at Paternal Yeah, so you
know he had this shim Becker guy in but he

(57:47):
so he knew of him and respected him. Yeah, when
he got to Michigan, I saw him in two of
his first five games, and I said, you know, this
guy's nothing, and then he went crazy and couldn't couldn't lose.
But I saw game that first year in Ann Harbor
against Missouri.

Speaker 4 (58:04):
I was at that game forty to seventeen.

Speaker 8 (58:06):
Yeah, yeah, and you know he's the.

Speaker 4 (58:08):
Big pum returning that game, he was turning the game
out of dime.

Speaker 8 (58:12):
Both team loses at home by twenty three, and then
gets well the name I'll coach.

Speaker 4 (58:16):
I mean, well, then they'd be produced the next week,
which was a big produce team. Yeah yeah, And then
they went to hes Lancing and that was Flenn Dowdy.
I think it was Glenn Dowdy. Kneel down in the yes,
that's right, and it was he had one lay, he

(58:37):
had one way and on the one and one in
the end.

Speaker 8 (58:40):
Yeah, exactly, you remember that, I do that was rather.

Speaker 4 (58:43):
Hat to twenty three point Yeah, twenty one.

Speaker 8 (58:45):
I'm a pole pus.

Speaker 3 (58:47):
Yeah, So my opinion cannot be considered a great coach
without one in the National Championship. I don't know it
in my lifetime. I'm oh, he's never had an undefeated season.
I don't know what happened prior to that. So my
question is, with Carball and Lloyd Carr both win the

(59:09):
National Championships, are they pushed ahead of.

Speaker 4 (59:13):
Bowl all statue?

Speaker 3 (59:16):
Are they pushed ahead of Bowl as far as all
time in Michigan?

Speaker 4 (59:20):
Will not? Well, definitely, if I hadn say Jim Marbow
would not because they put up problems as as as success.
So I strike that one. Lloyd Carr, I don't know.

Speaker 8 (59:40):
If I came in the Hall of the very Good
and he's in the Hall of Fame, he's not agree.

Speaker 4 (59:43):
I mean yeah, I mean he had a lot of
four lost seasons, a lot of well.

Speaker 8 (59:48):
Until ninety seven, there were a lot of people who
thought that he would be gone.

Speaker 4 (59:53):
I thought, Gary Mueller just sounds weird. I think here's
the third coaching Lloyd.

Speaker 6 (59:57):
I do too, don't I do?

Speaker 8 (59:59):
Yeah, I havebly do. But that's tund what you're saying.

Speaker 4 (01:00:02):
Day.

Speaker 8 (01:00:02):
My only encounter that was, let's say, in the two
thousand National Championship game, my team gets hurt much earlier
and the Michigan State loses that game to Florida and
tome Izzo still has eleven Big Ten titles and uh,
you know, six tournament titles and eight final parts all
that stuff, but he doesn't have the Grand prize. Does

(01:00:27):
that mean his coaching career is diminished significantly?

Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
I don't think it's diminished, but I don't think people
would look at him the same way as they do
with him having that title. It's kind of like the
ring conversation.

Speaker 10 (01:00:39):
Yeah, when you talk about grace of all time when
people look.

Speaker 3 (01:00:43):
At rings, you know, it's kind of the same thing.
I feel like we're coaches like the other things that
are also wonder here what kind of success he would
have had in today's big team where you have Nebraska
and Penn State, who also had legendary coaches, and Tom
Osborn and.

Speaker 8 (01:01:01):
Joe paternal It was the big two in the Little
eighth time and in Michigan Ohio State, and that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:07):
Was all much that was the Bowing Moyning thing was
pretty much even, was it not. I think I mean
Bo got a lot of you know, got a lot
of uh accolades from beat Michigan State. Right, you beat
him seventeen out of twenty one games.

Speaker 6 (01:01:22):
So if you do.

Speaker 4 (01:01:23):
That, you're gonna I mean, you're not gonna people aren't
gonna run out tom right do that.

Speaker 8 (01:01:29):
And he was winning Big ten titles. He won a
lot of it was winning Bulgage. Yeah, yeah, so that's
that's part of the issue.

Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
But I guess again, it is winning the Big Ten title.
Then when they were doing such a big deal when it.

Speaker 4 (01:01:45):
Came balance Rose and everything through, I mean yeah, I
mean the road getting the road if he won the
role when he won the Rose Bowl in that nineteen
eighty season, that was huge. John wan Angler and Anthony Carter,
I mean that that was a big you know, Pridgeery
roffis back. You finally got that done.

Speaker 8 (01:02:03):
There wasn't even a National Championship game. Sometimes you might
wind up just in the Orange Bowl or the Rose
Bowl with the teams playing that would determine it. But
there wasn't a BCS. There wasn't no layoffs, there was.
Sometimes you get a championship game. Sometimes it's just a
popularity contest with the polls, and you would have split winners.

(01:02:25):
We saw that as late as ninety seven, but you
would have, you know, one group saying, way you can
go back in sixty six or sixty five rather and
you can have three different teams, you know you can.
You can have that too. So well, his was very
different in Bose.

Speaker 4 (01:02:39):
Best team in my opinion was then eighty five team
when Jim Harpa was a junior that deep Mark Messer
was a freshman. They were eleven one in one. They
finished number two in the nation chef and they beat
Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. They had this nasty tie
with Illinois three to three. They kept them out a
shot at winning on as stuff, but they didn't win

(01:03:01):
the Big Ten that year. Iow won the Big Ten, right,
that's right? Yeah, Rob how hit that goal, that's right,
and then lost twelve to ten. And I will see,
but that's that's my favorite boat team. That was a
great team.

Speaker 8 (01:03:16):
Yeah, and that was a one versus two matchup.

Speaker 4 (01:03:18):
Yeah, and the rain there Iowa, you know, they twelf
to ten and they had blood the clawg down and
Houtland kicked that bulgal and driving rain and yeah, that
was that was mean. That was probably Iowa was one
of their biggest wines of all time.

Speaker 8 (01:03:33):
Iowa was living a charmed life that year time because
they beat Michigan State on the last yeah you know,
and has you know, clost to six hundred yards in
that game and they went thirty five thirty one on
the Chuck long bootleg. Jay you might know this story,
but uh, Spartans had a defensive back name Keith Fisher,

(01:03:54):
kid from Pennsylvania, was four star guy running back and
they made him a corner and he looked like he
had a lot of potentials to quarterback. But in that game,
a Fry calls time out, you know, right and third
down and calls along over the sidelines and Charlie is,

(01:04:15):
we're going to run that bootletting. Don't tell anybody, just
keep the ball, gonna tell the back wasn't getting it,
did Charlie? You run it and you're gonna score, and
you're gonna go and walk into the ed. He didn't
tell them all the ball up like it was his
statue of liberty. But uh, that's exactly what happened. And
I am sitting in the press box at Kinnick Stadium,

(01:04:37):
roughly fifteen feet from Nick Stay, who's up in the
And David didn't need a megaphone or a phone or
anything else, because I think the players on the field
could hear Wow. And he is screaming as loud as
I've ever heard a coach yell, what's a fake?

Speaker 6 (01:04:57):
Wow?

Speaker 8 (01:04:57):
Well is that.

Speaker 4 (01:04:59):
Washington at the game that Craig Johnson subeded for Lorenzo White, Yes,
who has done now as a freshman at Michigan Saint
Da Luzzio from Lands.

Speaker 8 (01:05:08):
That's right, that's yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
And Lorenzo was hurt in that game. He did not
play against Michigan a couple of weeks.

Speaker 8 (01:05:15):
For that was a year when he wound up with
two thousand and sixty six yards at the freshman record,
you know, and carry the ball one hundred and two
times in eight days.

Speaker 4 (01:05:25):
Yeah, you know, our decisis was his sophomore years.

Speaker 8 (01:05:28):
Sophomore year that was hurt at the NCA sophomore record.
But in that game, of course, now here comes to
play and Charlie as he called them, just held the
ball and walked into the end zone and if Saban
who was about five nine, I'm gonna say, okay uh,

(01:05:49):
and the lists him as being five to ten.

Speaker 4 (01:05:51):
He was generally he was built, strong, strong, firing, and.

Speaker 8 (01:05:54):
And everyone was scared of him. I mean's like being
scared of a jockey because he's loud, because he's so
intense and loud, and you get in your face, you know,
and you know he obviously knows what he's talking about.
But if he could have gotten down on the sideline
then and he'd gotten the hold of Keith Fisher, that
may have been a homicide.

Speaker 4 (01:06:15):
What do you think though, locker room?

Speaker 8 (01:06:20):
When we weren't in the locker room. But I would
have loved to have been there and fly on the wall.
Of course, you would love to be there.

Speaker 4 (01:06:25):
Now you like that, I do.

Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
I do.

Speaker 8 (01:06:28):
That's what makes you a sick person. I'm gonna give
you one other Nick Saban temper story. I've told this
story about the rose Ball where he's sitting there and
that's right staring at the stats and to the my defense,
you know, they won the rose Ball, but they played
Purdue in nineteen ninety eight and Michigan State was incomplete control.

Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
These plans.

Speaker 8 (01:07:00):
Oh give me nineteen ninety seven, ninety seven, ninety seven.
That's right, that was a field goal block. Yeah, and
Michigan's they didn't have to kick the field goal, but
they chose to kick the field goal to get the
margin up a little higher, so a field goal wouldn't
beat him. Yeah, and of course, of course it's blocked
and returned for a touchdown.

Speaker 4 (01:07:21):
I remember that.

Speaker 8 (01:07:21):
And now the game ends, and the p new writers
had already gone down to the fields. They had've given
up on this game, right, they'd gone by and they said, hey,
you know I have played at the bowl game and
all stuff. Right, So now waiting outside the locker room
for Nick to come out. And it took.

Speaker 20 (01:07:41):
Forever, they said, what might have been the second longest
wait for a post game, following only vo as a
Holiday Bowl in eighty he.

Speaker 8 (01:07:54):
Missed two deadlines, and he never missed the deadline. Mom
waiting for Vow to come out of the locker room
like an hour or death minute. So we're waiting. We're
just oh right. And the guy was doing the the
postgame interview there doing the sideline was Ike Griffin, Mega Man,

(01:08:16):
remember Mega so exactly? So Mega thinks that you know, Okay,
it's my time. I'm going to get my name and
I'm going to ask Nik a tough question. Yeah, bad
time to ask Nick a tough question. So he said, Nick,
that steel goal, what were you thinking?

Speaker 4 (01:08:36):
Well, that's how he raised it.

Speaker 8 (01:08:37):
Yeah, wow, And I'm standing there. I posted not to
get it, but in the in the past, and I
thought that there was going to be a you know,
I gets like six six yeah, and Nick wanted to
kill Well that was the last we saw.

Speaker 4 (01:08:55):
Like, well, it's the game that they shows. I got
a boat shopping says, it's very learned that deaf nineteen
seventy six.

Speaker 8 (01:09:03):
I was at the game as the fan.

Speaker 4 (01:09:08):
Game, and Michigan was number one in the country and
he lost produced sixteen to fourteen.

Speaker 8 (01:09:14):
We spent in a touchdown fast in his.

Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
Hand and dropped me and so Michigan lose. Bobbywood as Gibbokin.
So the writers just this dim root ink was a yeah,
supports information assistant or whatever. So it was his job
to bring the writers down to the locker.

Speaker 8 (01:09:32):
Room, yeah, to meet with Ball.

Speaker 3 (01:09:34):
It wasn't like the.

Speaker 8 (01:09:34):
Fresh conference area.

Speaker 4 (01:09:36):
So he brings He's right at the door and there's
this big gray steel door at raw Fe Stadium for
that visiting locker room. The boat saw Rootin took that
door and just slammed at his face front of all
the Raiders, and they thought that door was going through

(01:09:57):
the door.

Speaker 8 (01:09:57):
Game.

Speaker 4 (01:09:58):
He was that bad, humiliated Jim Brugi and it is
in front of his colleagues.

Speaker 8 (01:10:05):
But you know it sergical later wound up as the
s idea that guy.

Speaker 4 (01:10:10):
Yeah, yeah, so, I mean so, I think all coaches
have their moments when they embarrass themselves, lose the composure
and portven has to do with.

Speaker 8 (01:10:21):
The game of self.

Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
It's it's a honey emotional game and when you lose again,
but you've got ta do with the band, right, Yes,
I mean how how?

Speaker 8 (01:10:28):
What?

Speaker 4 (01:10:28):
What's the best coach that takes a loss a heart
Rinchy's loss?

Speaker 8 (01:10:34):
You've covered that, You've got?

Speaker 6 (01:10:36):
Wow?

Speaker 4 (01:10:36):
How's the you are?

Speaker 8 (01:10:38):
Are?

Speaker 15 (01:10:39):
Do they now?

Speaker 8 (01:10:39):
Success? Easy with that Painter?

Speaker 4 (01:10:42):
Hope for Baden.

Speaker 8 (01:10:43):
When that Painter lost that game to Florida Gulf Coast,
not only was he the classiest guy I've ever seen
at a post game, he went around to every riders
and what do you got? What you got? He wouldn't
leave the podium until everyone had had a chance to
ask him, Wow, you hit. He must have been there
for forty minutes. I said that. Man, there is always

(01:11:03):
that one. I don't know, he just he wired a
little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
If not.

Speaker 8 (01:11:08):
Meline was pretty good.

Speaker 4 (01:11:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, not that he you know, I mean
still Bobby Bowden I.

Speaker 8 (01:11:16):
Saw in a situation like that, the audem whole classic. Yeah,
just really really good. Jim Keaton Jr. You've seen a
lot of coaches and tyraids and you've never been on
the wrong end of them. You played for Darryl who
seemed like he was pretty mild mannered. You know, he
had that comment by the guy that's going to get
fired around here. But one of the most validle tempestuous

(01:11:40):
coaches in Ancia history was an Arizona State and Frank Cush,
and the stories are probably plot forever about what he
was like to play.

Speaker 10 (01:11:51):
Yeah, Coach Cush. I went my freshman year is.

Speaker 8 (01:11:56):
The year before he had he had they had taken
a team over to.

Speaker 10 (01:12:01):
Hawaii and lost in Hawaii and apparently they tore the
hotel apart and Coach Cush was fired after that incident.
But when we when I got there, my freshman year
and we got the camp. Several of the seniors, Uh

(01:12:24):
were telling me.

Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
Things that they had to do with have Amazona and
uh there are some stories of Coach Cush taking guys
and making them.

Speaker 8 (01:12:38):
Beat him up Mount Cush.

Speaker 3 (01:12:41):
And if they didn't beat.

Speaker 10 (01:12:42):
Him up Mount Cush, they had to go back and
do it again.

Speaker 8 (01:12:45):
And uh there was a.

Speaker 10 (01:12:46):
Lot of six am runs when you didn't do the things.

Speaker 8 (01:12:51):
And and and.

Speaker 10 (01:12:53):
I actually played for Coach Cush when I was with
the Arizona Wranglers play year. You like him, I loved him,
but I loved that coach that lets me know what
he's thinking.

Speaker 8 (01:13:08):
Yes, you have to get And I am like, yeah,
I can play for you.

Speaker 10 (01:13:12):
I can play for parts though, I can play for because.

Speaker 8 (01:13:15):
That's when you were a professional.

Speaker 4 (01:13:17):
I'm telling. I mean the horse joys Arizona say are
true with Frank Bush when they were back in the
old you know whatever conference they were in for the whack,
the whack, I mean, we're horrible.

Speaker 8 (01:13:30):
I mean, those those were.

Speaker 10 (01:13:32):
Were no different times than bar Bryant taking guy.

Speaker 8 (01:13:36):
That's true, don't you know.

Speaker 4 (01:13:37):
No, Actually, you just nail you nailed the two of them.
Those were the two coaches said were the savings.

Speaker 8 (01:13:44):
Of course six.

Speaker 4 (01:13:46):
Yeah, I think you're right.

Speaker 8 (01:13:47):
I think both of those guys you know today, could
you get away with that stuff? Oh?

Speaker 4 (01:13:51):
Hell, you know, could Bob Night coach today?

Speaker 8 (01:13:54):
No? No, could you do it? Jantri Portal. We're going
to take a break and when we get back, I
think we're going to try to get Richard Kincaid on
the phone, se we can catch him. He headed back
to Farmington, so we'll.

Speaker 21 (01:14:09):
See if we can catch up to him get his
take quickly on what we saw today at k America Park.
Might be talking with another guy who many who are
familiar with, Jim Baker, fantastic coach at Lanson Katholic. Now
he has turned that over to someone else, dandling business,
and he's gonna be a lot of Michigan State games

(01:14:30):
on the road, so I will see him there. And
of course he's very successful furniture business. So we're gonna
talk with him a little bit about what he saw
today at Kromerica Park and we'll probably mosey back to
football before we wrap this up.

Speaker 8 (01:14:44):
We'll be right back on the drive with Jacky.

Speaker 8 (01:17:43):
Well, welcome back and to drive with Jack with Podline
and Radio Network, Jack Devil' here with again James Junior,
Dave Green, Tom Crawford, Fred Thompson, five of our six
member crew at co America Park today and we want
to welcome in number six. That is Richard ken Caid,

(01:18:05):
who is a Detroit correspondent for US now every Tuesday.
Rich what did you see today from these Tigers and
how confident are you that they've righted the ship after
this one in twelve stretch?

Speaker 22 (01:18:19):
Well, i'll tell you what looks that's switching over Houston
is huge because it gives them a six game lead
in the three team battle to get the number one
playoff feed or the top two playoff feeds each which coming.

Speaker 3 (01:18:32):
To buy a test.

Speaker 22 (01:18:33):
So it's time to Detroit and Toronto for those, well,
it's still Detroit, try and uston for those three spots,
but with a six game lead, Detroit's looking pretty good
and they lead Toronto in that particular race by two,
so that the postseason buy is looking pretty solid right
now thirty three games to go.

Speaker 8 (01:18:52):
Who impressed you today? For Detroit? It was the good
Charlie Morton and a lot of guys showed plate discipline
which we have all was seen from the Tigers. They
were able to get walked, three of them in the
first setting, and or two of them, I believe, and
then counted along with the walks that got last night

(01:19:13):
in the ten setting, five batters in the span of
seven hitters.

Speaker 3 (01:19:18):
Go prett.

Speaker 22 (01:19:20):
Yeah, Charlie Morton was terrific today was I was so impressed.
I didn't know we're going to talk about the game, Jack,
I wanted to talk about the seat improvement program.

Speaker 8 (01:19:29):
Seed improvement program. I think that's an excellent place to start.
The mayor Jim Keaton did his job while looking around.
But you know, I didn't think that I would be
talking to higher ups in America Park by the time
we were done with this program.

Speaker 3 (01:19:47):
But we were.

Speaker 8 (01:19:47):
We all wound up with seats that might have been
beyond our budget.

Speaker 22 (01:19:53):
Well, yeah, exactly, right. So I'm smiling as I say,
as I just think about this. So, you know what,
this is my first to the ballpark this season, as
it turns out, okay, and I just think guys were
happy to see me. They scored six runs in the
first inning, and uh, you know, you can just kind
of those along from there. But the main thing I
just kept thinking, I wanted, you know, from the first sitting,
I wanted that sweep and uh and they they got

(01:20:16):
it for uh, for us today and that's uh, you know,
it's I think it's going to turn out to be huge.
Now these four games against Kansas City coming up, well
you know they're almost set back, so you know, maybe
sweep him when and keep prushure on Toronto.

Speaker 8 (01:20:32):
Well, I know that the secret to the Tiger success
was not me because I was going for previously this season.
You were one of those was with Jay Green, so
he's not the lucky charm. I don't know whether there's
Keaton or Proper or Thompson or you Rich, but one
of you.

Speaker 23 (01:20:49):
You know what, today, I think it's a simplest fram
bar Valdez was uh was not good today, all right,
he was he was off from that first sitting and
the Walkstree gives up sex, and there and and and there,
and did not Houston look like a pretty disinterested baseball
team today?

Speaker 3 (01:21:08):
I thought they just were.

Speaker 22 (01:21:10):
To lolly gig and almost you know that point, lollly
gig and they just seemed just interested to me.

Speaker 6 (01:21:19):
And kind of.

Speaker 8 (01:21:19):
A long, scary bottom of the first inning. Center fielder
couldn't walk off the field for he was from now.
He ran back into that wall, and yeah, you know
that was not good. And then the first inning it
took the half hour. So I'm thinking that this is

(01:21:41):
not a good thing for the show. Uh, Rob, I'm
sure you were thinking the same thing at that point.
You had contingency plans and plans C, D and E
ready to go. But Tigers didn't have to do much
after that. Actually outscored two to one the rest of
the way. But how do you explain that team liked

(01:22:04):
with a lot of all stars, a lot of proven hitters,
guys that they certainly hit home runs at home in
that bandbox, and they go thirty and two thirds innings
without a run. What's that about?

Speaker 6 (01:22:17):
Right?

Speaker 22 (01:22:18):
The Tigers want threat themselves, I mean not to that
extent where they want thirty plus innings without scoring around.
But during that stretch in July, they that was the
reason they lost in July. They couldn't hit the ball
for almost a solid month. And that's yeah, it's just
what happens. And it feeds on everybody puts more pressure
on their individual at bats. It speeds off each to

(01:22:40):
each other, and you know, that's one of the things
that's as old as baseball, as batting swamps. Houston is
definitely in one right now, but it kind of looks
like it's carried over to the pitching as well when
they give up fourteen to ten and what seven today?
Pretty good last night pitching, by the way, you know,
pull the shut out as they did almost But yeah, yeah,
they're in a little disay right now. The Tigers was

(01:23:01):
a better force.

Speaker 8 (01:23:04):
Rich I want to talk about a player who I
think is probably been overlooked a little bit by Tigers fans,
and it is Dylan Dingler, and Ohio State product was
seen coming into this season as a guy who might
be able to help some but at Jake Rogers, and

(01:23:24):
it was going to be a catching share if not
Dingler backing up Rogers, and then the injury changed that
Dingler came in and has the highest batting average on
the team. That a lot of clutch hits, but play
go ahead.

Speaker 22 (01:23:44):
I just saying he leads the team in war. Oh
you know, I'm on top of everything else. But see
I was, I cost all right up through and I
admire watching catcher's work and this guy's footwork, his top
times of maze. You know, if you're a catcher, this
is the guy you want to watch. This is this

(01:24:05):
is who you want to turn out to be. Is
Jill and Dingling. I mean he's he just he's the
mark by I don't when he comes to that particular
position catching, you don't really you don't really look at
it as a place where you're going to necessarily get.

Speaker 6 (01:24:18):
A lot of pops.

Speaker 22 (01:24:19):
Sometimes you do, but usually you don't. You get steady
hit this guys there, But this guy, no, it's I
think his offenses is pretty on top of whatever you're
putting it on. Because this guy he helps the Tigers
more with his defense than he does with anything else.
And he's helping the Tiger's with time on offense. So
he's he's gonna I'd like to say, splendid player with.

Speaker 8 (01:24:43):
Three more things about Dingler rich and or see where's
number thirteen, which is a pretty good number for Tigers
catcher when you think of the Lander perriage. But right,
his throwing arm is terrific and throws to second base
steel for percentich against him is lower than I'm almost
any catcher in the major leagues. Yeah, you see him

(01:25:05):
make these tags at the plate and he knows that
he can't go out and get the ball.

Speaker 17 (01:25:10):
Then have a lot of.

Speaker 8 (01:25:11):
White positions him stuff perfectly without getting an interference or
blocking the plate call. And then he's got this thing
mastered of framing the strike zone, to the point that
if I were an umpire, I think I would tell
him at the start of the game, look, I know
where the strike zone is. Knock it off, because if
you do that and you make me look bad, I'm

(01:25:32):
going to call it the ball anyway. But he seems
to get three or four pitches every game for the
Tigers that are nut strikes and they're called as strikes.

Speaker 22 (01:25:43):
Yeah, it's always in motion, And frankly, I don't like framing,
all right. I never I thought it was cheating, you know.
One I was growing up playing baseball, I thought it
was cheating, you know, but his glove was always emotions.
I think the most astonishing thing about bigglers is plowing actious.

Speaker 4 (01:26:01):
You know.

Speaker 22 (01:26:01):
Yeah, if you put a bush of basket out to
a second base and he's going to hit it eight
nine times out of ten, I mean he's just money
with that army is and the rest of Yeah, he's
it's again.

Speaker 3 (01:26:12):
Is this is going to be again?

Speaker 22 (01:26:14):
It's a lot of It's gonna be a lot of
fun to watch develop us and and and play at
his peak levels in the next several seasons.

Speaker 8 (01:26:21):
I want to ask some of the other guys in
the car here, Fred Thompson, what did you expect from Dingler?
And how big a surprise is his performance is year?

Speaker 9 (01:26:31):
Well, it sounds what we'd I expect him to play
pretty well. What we saw last year. Where he's really
surprised me is how well he's hit, how consistently he's hit,
and just how he's a very stoic sort of disposition.
You don't see him get high as to get low.
The boy does he play a very good defensive catcher

(01:26:51):
That trusted me a ton.

Speaker 14 (01:26:53):

It is to ride with Jack Fine.

Speaker 8 (01:29:55):
Light Radio Network. Apologize for a little technical difficulties here.
Can't blame the driver and Ben smooth sailing back from
Comerica Park. But sometimes you go through these zones per
mere to triangles and you can drop a cell call.
So now we're trying a different device and Jay Green's

(01:30:16):
phone has never let us down, so anticipating that will
be fine. Rob, glad you got us back on the air.
Here do we have Jim Baker with us stand by?

Speaker 7 (01:30:29):
Guys getting them now?

Speaker 8 (01:30:31):
Okay, good, Well I can finish what I was saying.
Then I think that got obliterated. But guys, you think
about Tiger's history and when they have won championships in
the thirties and they first broke through after the TI
cop era named Mickey Cochrane was a Hall of Fame
catcher also an excellent manager player manager, and then in

(01:30:55):
nineteen sixty eight, you know all about Bill Freehan air.

Speaker 4 (01:30:58):
H Mickey Lolis. Yeah, that's what you think of after that.

Speaker 8 (01:31:02):
Final fowl ball pitch. Absolutely, and Bill free Ann was
an All Star. It seemed like every year another kind
of unsung guy maybe didn't get all the love that
some other.

Speaker 4 (01:31:15):
Players sports illustrated or remember rapidly on the All Start game.

Speaker 8 (01:31:21):
And then Lance Parrish flag dangler at number thirteen and
a guy who was a rock behind the plate and
hit a lot of big home runs, including in the
win over the Padres before Gibson hit his home run.
Lance Parrish did his work. So I think Parish was

(01:31:44):
a critical part of that team and part of the
group that all came up together with Whittaker and Trammell
and Morris and Petrie all in that same group. And
Lance Parrish also some excellent work in the Tigers organization
after that. And then Prodrodriguez, who was number one. I've

(01:32:05):
been catching ranks and a lot of career stats, accounting
stats because played so long, so many games. An outstanding
defensive catcher too, And here's Dingler now. And the Tigers
have two terrific catchers in the farm system that a
lot of teams would love to have, but Scott Harris said, no, thanks,

(01:32:26):
or not trade those two guys. Maybe we'll change positions
with them or something else. But Tigers looks like they
have catching depth here. I Dengland is going to be
around for a while, long after Jake Rogers retires. Brett Thompson.
When you think about Tigers catchers, who's.

Speaker 6 (01:32:46):
Number one on your list at this point?

Speaker 9 (01:32:48):
Lands Perish and then it's close to gaming free hand.
I saw Perish play more. I'm probably biased I did.
I am old enough to remember free playing, but like
I say, I saw Parish play more and just.

Speaker 6 (01:33:04):
The imposing figure he.

Speaker 9 (01:33:05):
Was and how well he threw the ball.

Speaker 8 (01:33:09):
Our runners even.

Speaker 6 (01:33:11):
Try and bother running on him.

Speaker 22 (01:33:12):
So that's that's what I remember most.

Speaker 8 (01:33:15):
And when when Parish would block the plate in a
way you can't today. That plate was blocked, it was
closed off. He had no chance of getting it. Maybe
you could find a prevace or a corner of it,
but that's about it.

Speaker 6 (01:33:32):
So, yeah, he was a very large man. You if
you had a choice, you wouldn't try to run him over.

Speaker 8 (01:33:37):
No, No, absolutely, time, Rob. I don't know if you've
had any success getting Jim.

Speaker 12 (01:33:43):
Not quite yet, guys, left a message for all right, okay.

Speaker 8 (01:33:48):
All right, well we'll just we'll just keep going here
for a few more minutes and then we're going to
close out a little earlier today, we are just about back,
so excellent time. I didn't think we get back before
the show ended.

Speaker 4 (01:34:01):
Jim.

Speaker 8 (01:34:02):
But what happens with this? We get an indie driver
here and good, good things can happen. But gentlemen, based
on what we saw today, I know it's one game
and very small sample size. Tom Crawford, how far are
the Tigers going to go in the postseason if they
don't play in a wildcard round? Do they win the

(01:34:24):
A l DS? Do they win the Als? Yes?

Speaker 6 (01:34:28):
Yes and no, Yes, yes and no and lose the
World Series?

Speaker 3 (01:34:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (01:34:33):
Yeah, that's what I'm fearing.

Speaker 4 (01:34:35):
I mean, I hope it goes beyond that, but they
win it all. But I think something's kind of you
only goes your weakest links the pitch.

Speaker 6 (01:34:45):
The hitting's going to falter or the pitching.

Speaker 4 (01:34:47):
I don't know. Dodgers probably too much for him.

Speaker 8 (01:34:51):
Pret Thompson, what's your take on that?

Speaker 6 (01:34:53):
I say, yes, yes and yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Speaker 8 (01:34:57):
Skinda wants to see the parade. That's what it is
first time in forty one.

Speaker 3 (01:35:00):
Years right here?

Speaker 9 (01:35:01):
Due I think. So the biggest problem is gonna be
is who pitches after Schoogle does. If they get solid
starting pitching that they have from Morton and like they
got from Flarity, they're.

Speaker 22 (01:35:14):
Gonna be hard to beat.

Speaker 6 (01:35:15):
But can you count on Flarity Morton? That's the question,
all right?

Speaker 4 (01:35:21):
What do you think?

Speaker 3 (01:35:22):
Jay?

Speaker 8 (01:35:23):
I know, now you've seen two games. We're not gonna
confuse you as a Baseball Hall of Fame voter here,
But based on what you've seen and what you've heard this.

Speaker 3 (01:35:33):
Year, do they win the A L.

Speaker 8 (01:35:36):
D S Alcs? What happens in the October Classic?

Speaker 3 (01:35:40):
I would think that would be great for that to happen.
But I'm gonna I'm gonna do something that I think
a lot of other people should do that I'm gonna
bow out of this one because I'm not expert enough
to know to be able to answer this question effectively.
So I'm gonna come on what you allso and go
off of that, and I'm gonna buy out of this.

Speaker 8 (01:36:00):
One of the things I love about Jay time and
you can tell he's not a members when he doesn't
know he doesn't pretend, and we got a lot of pretenders.

Speaker 6 (01:36:12):
In our business, right, that's for sure.

Speaker 8 (01:36:14):
All right, Jim Keaton, you know a little bit more
about baseball at all levels, having played it so well
and having been a former teammate of Barry Bonds. When
you think about where the Tigers are, as they still
have the weaknesses, what do you think what's in their future?

Speaker 6 (01:36:32):
Well, if they continue to play like they did today.

Speaker 4 (01:36:35):
And I like the way they bounce back from some adversity,
you're gonna have adversity in baseball. I like them to
win the Alds.

Speaker 10 (01:36:45):
I like them to win the Alcs, and I.

Speaker 4 (01:36:48):
Like them to get.

Speaker 10 (01:36:51):
And make it very interesting in the World Series.

Speaker 8 (01:36:54):
Make it very interesting.

Speaker 4 (01:36:55):
That's that's not committable. I don't know if they can
win it or not, because right because I was down
to pitching, and if we can get.

Speaker 6 (01:37:04):
Quality pitching, we have a chance to win. So who
would you.

Speaker 8 (01:37:08):
Want to play in the World Series? And who would
you not want to play? Would you rather play the
Dodgers or the best team in baseball right now? The
Milwaukee Brewers.

Speaker 10 (01:37:16):
I'd rather play the Dodgers because of our success that
we've had against them of late. We're not afraid of them.

Speaker 8 (01:37:24):
But it doesn't matter when you get to that point.

Speaker 6 (01:37:27):
It's all about the.

Speaker 10 (01:37:28):
Way you play the day you play.

Speaker 8 (01:37:30):
And we can have the.

Speaker 6 (01:37:34):
Two aces go at each other and give up twelve
runs and then Martin will come in and.

Speaker 3 (01:37:38):
Throw a no hitter. I mean, that's the way baseball is.

Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
But to give yourself the opportunity to win it, that's
what it's really all about.

Speaker 6 (01:37:47):
And I believe that the Tigers will get to.

Speaker 10 (01:37:48):
The World Series and then there then it's okay, gloves off,
let's go get it.

Speaker 8 (01:37:54):
Guys. I have a close friend who has a very
large wager. At least in my mind, it is on
the Tigers to get to the World so not to
win it. Nine to one odds at the beginning of
the year, and drinks are on him if the Tigers
get that far. Fred, what Jim is saying about the Dodgers,

(01:38:17):
The Dodgers scared you. They did beat the Tigers three
straight to start the season, right back in March. They did.
They've played a lot of good baseball early on, but
they haven't played well lately. And that's like anything else.

Speaker 9 (01:38:31):
It's who you're playing today, what team are you Fieling
out there and how well are you playing right now?
The Tigers are frankly playing better than a with the
Brewers right now.

Speaker 8 (01:38:42):
All right, Rob, you went a weigh in on this.

Speaker 6 (01:38:44):
How far did the Tigers go?

Speaker 12 (01:38:47):
I think they'll make it to the AL Championship Series.
I think they can get that, and that would and
let's look at this, guys. I mean, I know there's
high expectations of what happened last year and of course
what's going on now, but man, I think this team
is way ahead of schedule when you look at it
from just a couple of years ago. So we're benefiting

(01:39:07):
from ahead of scheduled routines. And Harris is talking about
the long haul, about having being up there for several years,
and I like that philosophy. But I to answer your
question after that long winded answer, I think at the
Championship Series in the American League, I think fans should
be very pleased with that.

Speaker 7 (01:39:28):
And we'll see what happens after that.

Speaker 12 (01:39:29):
But that's that's what I would suggest would be a
successful season.

Speaker 8 (01:39:34):
So you have the Tigers winning a divisional series and
I'm losing to the Red Sox in the ALCS.

Speaker 7 (01:39:40):
That would be perfect. That would be perfect. Didn't mind.

Speaker 8 (01:39:44):
Perfect for one guy. That's about all I can say.

Speaker 6 (01:39:47):
Okay, I like.

Speaker 8 (01:39:50):
What Tom Crawford said. Tom and I don't agree on
everything with some things, politics, some other things, but we
do agree on the Tigers and where they are headed.
And I I would be shocked beyond belief if they
did not win the division at this point, and I
think that they have an excellent chance to win at
least one series, maybe two. I don't see a team

(01:40:10):
that scares me in the American League, including Toronto.

Speaker 3 (01:40:15):
Rob.

Speaker 6 (01:40:15):
I don't know if you can do this.

Speaker 8 (01:40:17):
