Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jack Eblin here with my good friend Matt Sloan a
graph of oochemists.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Lots of traffic over here.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
Things are going great.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Matt.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Why is everyone coming here?
Speaker 4 (00:07):
Well, Jack, I'm a little biased, but I like to
think it's the people. We truly have a great staff
here to the service, body shop sales. A lot of
our employees were here before we bought the store. And
the family atmosphere and the fact that we truly care
and want to take care of our customers and make
it a great experience for them and build that relationship.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Can't ask for more than that.
Speaker 5 (00:26):
Stopus.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
See Matt and the gang here at graph of ocamists.
They're making friends.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Welcome back. It is a drive with Jack the Spotlight
Radio Network. Jack Eblin here with my producer Boston Rob. Rob.
Do we have Jay on the line?
Speaker 4 (00:51):
We most certainly do.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
All right, want to welcome in Jay Green. One of
the best athletes I think ever produced by the city
of Flint. And that's a long list, but this is
a multi sport standout former Michigan state receiver die Hard
(01:14):
Spartan and does some great things with youth in this area.
Jay I got this question again this week so I'm
going to give you one more chance to answer it.
Green do.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
So. Now, before I was a juvenile probation officer. Now
I'll work for a project called Prevent to Protect, and
I am a mentor. That's my role in it. So
basically I just kind of I'm the mentor for the kids,
So I hang out with them. We have goals for
(01:50):
them that you know, we try to sit that we
set I'm sorry, and try to help them achieve. So
I have, like you know, a few, I think five
or six kids on my case flow right now who
I deal with? One who are we just helped enroll
in college, so he'll be starting to college in the fall.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
So yeah, are these all disadvantaged young people? Are people
who have had some challenges or trouble in their past.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
So basically they are. They haven't all had challenges, But
one thing is they are targeted acts of violence or
anybody who any kid who threatens that they're going to
shoot up the school or they're gonna hurt somebody or
anything like that, we get a referral. It's a process
that we go through to determine whether they are a
(02:46):
good fit for our program. And once we determine that,
then sky's eliminited. There is no set time, so it's
not like a number of visits and then that's it.
We deal with kids from ages ten to twenty six,
and it's a lifetime commitment pretty much as long as
it's grant funded, or as long as the grant it's funded,
then we work with them.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Very important work rob much more important than what we
do between four and six. Absolutely, Jay, I want to
talk about the weekend. Beautiful weather here, a great night
to get out. Tomorrow is going to be maybe even better.
I'm going to be at Comerica for the Tigers Rangers
(03:31):
game and then Sunday Mother's Day. And you have some
plans for Mother's Day, right, that is correct.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
My mom and sisters will be coming up and we'll
be going to Brussett one. North Well A Symptom A
Symptom your new commercial and they said we gotta have it.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Well, you are one of the biggest one North fans
in the area. It started out on the west side.
Think you'd ever been to the Jackson location, but we
had a blast there. And then when one Northeast Lansing opened,
you even stopped by it wasn't for an appearance, but
it was great to see you out there when we
(04:14):
had our remote broadcast the first night of the NFL Draft.
And what is it about One North that makes you
want to take your mom there?
Speaker 5 (04:26):
It's just a great place with great food. It's kind
of like it's the same feeling that you get or
like when people come on campus and they see the
atmosphere and how beautiful the campus is and they just,
you know, immediately fall in love with That's what One
North is to me. You know, you got like a
(04:47):
sports bar side, then you have an elegant size. It's
like anything that you need you can get right there.
So yeah, that's why I like it. In the Sunday
Bunch is amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Rob Let the record show that Jay Green is not
on the payroll yet for One North and he doesn't
even get free meals there. But we do want to
welcome in Scott Berman and he is the He is
the co owner proprietor of all the One North locations.
(05:22):
He also has a Culver's up at Eastwood and he
also has a place that I can't wait to see.
I haven't been up to Saint John's yet to see
the heist. But Scott, when you hear Jay do this
testimonial for One North and knowing that he's bringing his
mom here from Flint, how does that make you feel?
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Man? That is awesome.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
The keyword was not on the payroll yet. I am
grateful for those words, and we're going to keep working
hard with our teams to try to earn that kind
to pray. But maybe Jay and you and I and
Kathy can all make a trip up to the heist
on us. I'll give you guys that experience and see
(06:07):
what you think.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Sold. Yeah, I'll just find the date. That's pretty good Jay,
around Saint John's right, you know that.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
Area Johns Thumping Ground. So I've already been telling people
to go get the jambala.
Speaker 6 (06:22):
So we've already put a couple of One North items
up there too, because people requested them once they heard
we owned One North. But it's a fun little spot too.
What game are you going to?
Speaker 5 (06:39):
Jack?
Speaker 6 (06:39):
Which Tiger game tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (06:41):
I'm going to see the Tigers six' ten game against The.
Rangers looking forward to. That and you have so many,
Tickets Jay scott may lead the state Of michigan in
tickets sports tickets that he, buys AND i say, buys
(07:02):
so he has a major line item for tickets To,
Tigers Red, Wings. Pistons of, Course i've been To lions
games with. Him he's got all The Michigan state games.
Covered how Many tigers games have you been? TO i
know you give him away to staff and some Other.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
Kathy kathy AND i have made more this year than
normal because we typically only use them as nobody takes.
Them BUT i think we've been to three or maybe
four games already this, year so, yeah we've made a.
Few it's. FUN i looked up YESTERDAY i had to
double check and confirmed they have the best record in,
baseball tied with The dodgers as of last, night so that's,
(07:48):
right and the highest.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Run difference plus eighty. Three they've scored eighty three more
runs than they have, allowed which speaks to some incredible starting.
Pitching but you were the one who told me about
the change in the seating in the Old Tiger den,
area which IS i used to love to sit, there
but they did have those wooden seats which could get
(08:11):
kind of. Uncomfortable but you say there's been a major upgrade.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
There, too, Right, yeah they changed all those. Seats they're
kind of a stadium. STYLE i, mean they don't, recline
but they're very comfortable, feeding like a fancy car seat
kind of. Thing so, yeah they're. Nice they put some
money into the amenities for the. GUESTS i my hunch
(08:36):
is that their home plate, area WHICH i don't think
that is doing very well.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Personally, yeah, okay. Okay there's one other difference in Co
america this, year and some people might not have noticed,
it but if you think about, it it used to
be the only place in the major leagues where there
was that old strip of. Dirt it used to see
(09:02):
in the, twenties, thirties forties and fifties that would go
from the mound to the plate and now heather To
bosni and the groundscrew there has turf there and you
wouldn't even know that there was that.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
Path, yeah she does a great. JOB i don't know
if you remember WHEN i was At. Mason the first
few YEARS i was, there we had that dirt path
to Copy, coomerica and we cut out home plate like
they did in the shape.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
Of a home.
Speaker 6 (09:35):
Plate, Yeah and eventually we got rid of it because
we felt like it lit the pitcher's, health there was
less to slow down the ball on a ball hit
hard back on the ground at a. Pitcher, yeah, yeah
that makes.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Sense. Jay you haven't been to A tigers game this, year,
right Lor, WELL i think that the two of us
And Boston, Rob i'm going to have to make a
pilgrimage and maybe we'll See scott And kathy there at a. Game,
yeah it would.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Be let's we're doing.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
Together, Yeah, SCOTT i have to ask you about the
brunches because we've been talking about this for a.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Month The Mother's day brunch before, that The easter. Brunch
we know you have to make reservations for those kinds of.
Things you have a great, crowd the word of mouth
has told people that is the place to. Be, uh
tell us a little bit about the brunch and why
it's been so.
Speaker 8 (10:45):
Successful, well you, know we had a brunch BEFORE, covid
and we were very skeptical and took some time to
bring it back AFTER covid for obvious.
Speaker 6 (10:55):
Reasons and when we did finally decide to do. It Mike,
weaver are partner operating partner on The West, side was
certainly instrumental in that because he embraced it and he
had done it at other, places and he takes a
great deal of pride in. It it's been one of
the one of the most successful things we've done in
(11:15):
the last few years as far as pleasing guests and
getting people to talk about. It BUT i short of
knowing EVERYBODY'S i do believe That i'm comfortable saying it's
the largest brunch in all of Mid, michigan certainly For
Mother's day In. Easter we end up with more than
half a dozen proteins and breakfast items and all sorts of.
(11:37):
Desserts and we'll have people again On Mother's day carving
at least one protein on the line. Afresh we currently
on The west. Side i'm not even sure they have
any openings left on The west. Side there might be
a handful of openings left on The east, side but we'll.
(11:58):
Do we'll serve over six hundred people brunches this weekend
at both of those, Restaurants.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Scott so we're.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Excited it's our busiest day of the.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Year, wow you've Seen, jay in, fact you were talking
to him when for The draft, show and you know
that he is not a small. Fellow so how much
do you think it helps him with this basketball background
to be able to box out when he's getting ready
to go through.
Speaker 6 (12:29):
The line and make sure that he.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Can get what he wants before you, know something empties
and he'd have to wait for a.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
Refill, Yeah i'm sure they're At One. North they Know
jay and he GETS vip, treatment so they'll set a
pick for him if they need to to make sure
he can get. There.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Scott great talking with. You we have some new commercials
that are going to debut next. Week talk about other
aspects and all of your banquet and catering facilities and
some tremendous lunch opportunities. There But i'll be talking with
you later this.
Speaker 6 (13:05):
Weekend good, well Thanks, jay good to see. You hopefully
we'll Run Indian Mother's.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
Day i'll look forward to, It. Scott i'll be there at,
noon all.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
Right.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
JAY i know that you don't spend a ton of
time watching THE nba maybe when The pistons are, playing
but it's not your favorite. Sport you like college basketball much.
Better but are you curious with The celtics now being
down two games to none and going To Madison Square
garden or will you find something else to occupy your?
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Time, NO i am. CURIOUS i will say for them
to go in and win. Two when they win the first,
game you kind, of you, know The celtics haven't played
for a, while so you kind of think, that you,
know maybe they need to get their lays up under
them because they've been you, know idle for so, while
for so. Long but then when they come back and
do it, AGAIN i, MEAN i think you have to take.
(14:07):
Notice and then you're looking the build up for this
game has been like a college. Game you, know they're
talking about the ticket prices and the fact that this
In Madison Square, garden which is you, know looked at
us the best basketball arena in the. World SO i
think with all of the promotion and everything around, IT i,
think you, know you have to kind of tune in
(14:28):
to see what's going to happen because it's been a
huge production as far as you, know as far as
it's gone as.
Speaker 6 (14:34):
Far but, No i'm.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Excited i'm definitely going to tune in the. Field Jalen
bruston can continue doing what you were.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
Doing, Hey, rob when we were talking With Ryan field
and he did say forty five thousand dollars for a courtside, seat, Tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
Right, yeah that's what he.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Said that's THAT'S i believe it unbelievable heard of a
ticket price like, that even for a game. Seven, So,
jay what do you make of the situation At Michigan.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
State?
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Now i've looked at so many of these little preseason football,
rankings and none of them Have Michigan state in the
upper half of The Big. Ten didn't have eight And
giles ranked among the top eight, quarterbacks didn't Have Jonathan
smith ranked among the top eight. Coaches and there was
(15:32):
one the other day THAT i really got a kick out.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
Of.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Jay it ranked the Eighteen Big ten coaches in terms
of how tough they would be in a, fistfight AND
i Think Jonathan smith was like fourteenth on that. List
so not a lot of respect for him being a,
bully but in terms of What Michigan state is trying
(15:55):
to do, here still getting some people coming in from the.
Portal looks like some people who might be stealth, helpers
might be able to give him a boost at some
positions where they need. Help in your, mind what is
a successful season for this?
Speaker 5 (16:11):
TEAM i think when we talked about it, BEFORE i
think he's got to win eight or nine, games And
i'm basing that on the fact that you, know he
could have seven last year, definitely and possibly eight games
last year with you know what he inherited and the
(16:32):
lack of, talent you, know as compared to other, schools
he could have easily won seven or eight games last.
Year SO i would say him winning eight or nine,
games he definitely will have to Beat michigan and THEN
i might even have to say that The Penn state
game he may have to win because that's SOMETHING i
(16:52):
feel like fans want to. See you, know everybody is
on this path to the playoffs and feel we need
to be in the, Playoffs so that's part of. It
so that's part of the.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Expectation, really Success jay At Oregon state was not an overnight.
Thing it was kind of a slow, build but he
did it to sustain and it did while he was.
There it wasn't a flukey. Thing BUT i think back
To mark D'Antonio and his second, Year Michigan state went
(17:26):
from seven wins to nine, wins so it was a
two win. Improvement i'm thinking That Michigan state could have
a three win improvement and go from five to. Eight
that would be tremendous in light of the roster That
Jonathan smith.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
Inherited, NO i would agree what LIKE i told you,
BEFORE i feel like our schedule is favorable for him
to be able to win that many, games you, know
our biggest, games especially in, COMMERCE i feel like are at.
Home of, course we got to go out TO, usc
which would be a tough game to, play but it's
(18:03):
still a game that you, know we can win BECAUSE
usc hasn't you, know been that great as of. Recently
SO i think that it is. Possible whether it's going
to happen or, not we'll. See BUT i like the
thing that you said about being sustainable BECAUSE i always
feel like that's what you, Want, Pete, like like you,
know last, year people were looking At indiana in the
(18:25):
year that they had and some other teams that kind
of just jumped out of, Nowhere and my question has
always been is what they've done is what they did?
Sustainable so we'll see as far as those other, teams
and we'll see as far as our.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Team, jay have you ever been TO? Usc, no you
didn't get a trip there or anything like, that, Right, No, no,
okay you Know Michigan state is there the last weekend
In september should be absolutely gorgeous. Weather and to be
(19:03):
in The La colisseum that time of year where they've
had The Olympic games a couple of times and so
many incredible sporting. Events Super, bowl the First Super bowl was.
There it might be something you would want to. Consider
and if we can get reasonable flights out, there would
you consider taking a trip out to The Spartans trophans.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
GAME i would definitely do. THAT i definitely.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Would, yeah the battle of The Greek, warriors The spartans
and The. Trojans we Correctly Michigan state has a big
streak going against. Them, yeah did lose to them back
in the sixties when they HAD Oj, simpson But Michigan
(19:51):
state has beating. Them actually BEAT usc twice in one,
year both On holidays in nineteen eighty seven and Then january,
first nineteen ninety, eight and then beat them again a
couple of years later in nineteen Ninety, jay thanks so
much for joining. Us really appreciate. It have a Great Mother's.
