Speaker 1 (00:01):
You know right now, I mean everybody's working hard.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Man. Uh, I feel really comfortable with about six or seven.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Guys in our room right now.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
You know, I'm not at liberty to name who's gonna
be our starters, who's gonna be that third guy, But
but guys have been competing, and it's been fun to
watch the competition and and.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Just their overall approach the room.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I got a great room just from a personality standpoint.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
They all really care about each other, care about their.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Teammates, and it's uh been enjoyed to coaching coach 'em.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Let's see.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
So I have a sign in my in our receiver
room that says no block, no rock. So I got
fifteen dudes in there, and if you wanna stay in there,
you gonna block all fifteen of 'em. So that that's
the attitude that we all have. You know, we take
blocking personally. It's it's a big part of our offense
to order in order for us to have the big
(00:57):
runs that we're going to have this year, we got
get it done downfield. So it's just part of our DNA,
you know. And if you're not doing it in practice,
then you know, you be standing by me most of
the time. Coach the the piggyback up for Chris, said, I,
I know you probably looked at these kind of like
your children.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
But is there one receiver that you're kind of saying
waiting til the big ting gets.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
A lot on this guy? Man, what do you know?
He's a question?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
No, Well, I mean we I feel like we have
a a really good room, y. I I want these
guys to introduce themselves to the world on the field.
You know, I'm not gonna kind of let the cat
out the bag, but a but from a wide out standpoint,
from a from a receiver coach standpoint, uh, I think
we have one of the most dynamic rooms that we've
(01:46):
had in a lot of years, the best you've had.
I Nah, you know, I can't say that. I mean
I I had a room with three pros in there
at one point, and and so I can't say that.
I can't disrespect those guys. But but we have a
really really good room, you know, filled with guys that can.
You know, we got speed, We got guys that can,
that are not afraid to go and and you know,
(02:07):
do the dirty work. You know, it's it's we got
bigger guys. We got smaller guys. We got guys with
really good suttonness. So I'm excited, you know, I'm excited
to move the chest pieces around on Saturday and and
you know, get the right guys on the field at
the right time.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
When did that excitement sort of set in? When did
you realize, like, ar, we have guys, we have a
a room here.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
That could do something I I'd say in spring ball.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
You know, you seen flashes in spring ball from guys
and you're like, Okay, we can do this consistently and
and and you know, guys have just gotten better and
better as as they've been able to absorb the offense
and you know, kind of slow the game down and
start to understand the details of each play better. You
you w you seen guys just you know, like wait
(02:52):
till they get a load, to wait till they see
this guy.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
You know. So it's been, uh, it's been fun to
watch their development. You've got to watch it.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
A little bit of struggling with some guys getting out
uh throughout camp to how is that allowed maybe some
of those younger guys, you know, guys like the Colliders
and tap leems that those are two guys that they
couldn't hurt a little bit about, Uh, how's it allowed
them to maybe step forward?
Speaker 1 (03:14):
And and what do they need to do to get
pass some of those veterans you brought in.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I I'd say for for the young guys that have
just gotten here or or are young guys that came
in in January, just to continue to you know, absorb
the playbook, continue to play fast, continue to play physical, trust,
the process of of learning how to run routes, you know,
understanding the details of the playbook. You know, those are
(03:41):
all things that some of the younger guys struggle with.
But once they figure it out and the game slows
down for 'em, then they can rely on their god
given ability. Those guys you mentioned, you know, they've had
really good, really good fall. They're competing their tails off,
you know how much they'll play, you know, as you
have to be determined, But I mean they're going to
(04:03):
be some really good players for us, like like really good.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
You know, according to when you played in the first
game which lived for the two weeks, did.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Your energy ramp up? And do you expect the receiver
to death to try to change much between now on
the twelve days.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Before they are.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
I mean, nothing solidified yet, so th these guys are
going to compete pretty much all the way up until
game day.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
You know, we still have a couple question marks on,
you know, how we're going.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
To put this group of guys or that group of
guys on the field together. You know, so we're still
trying to figure that out. And then they're competing every day,
so there may be some changes.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
But you know, we we have an.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Idea of who we think maybe our starters, at least
the two outside guys, you know, and then inside it
it's you know, well we'll we'll play the best man,
you know. We you may see that by committee, you know,
just I don't know just yet.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
How does a Mari compliment Nick and vice versa?
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
One thing about O Mari man, he's he's he's played
a lot of ball.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
He is a savvy wide out.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
He he brings that veteran presence he brings he brings
the experience of a guy that's that's been in some battles.
He can get deep, you know, he's he's a really
good route runner. It takes a lot of pride in
in in wanting to be a pure route runner, which
you know I love as a receiver coach. But he's
also you know, he's got a chip on his shoulder,
(05:35):
so he'll go in there and dig the safety out.
You know, he'll talk a little trash, which you know
I'm cool with just a little bit, you know. So
he's uh, he's been really good for our room and
good for our team.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
And how does Nick compliment him? Like with with Nick's growth.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
You know want your wife too, well really just his
you know Nick, Nick has a you know, really good
approach to football.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
He approaches like a pro.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
I think, you know, I think they've learned from each
other from that standpoint of of, uh, you know, how
to study, you know, I think Nick, you know, right now,
Nick still to take. The next step is to play
more consistent. You know, they'll he'll he'll get opportunities. You know,
we needed to make, you know, play after play after play.
(06:24):
You know, he's uh, he's really been working hard at
his craft, man, you know, just being better at the
top of routes, being more physical. You know, he's already
really good with contested catches. So we we just been
working on fine tuning him as a route runner. And
I think they'll they'll be a good duo, they'll compliment
(06:45):
each other.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Real well, is there a trait that you think you
were missing in from the group overall last year that
you think has been filled in with this group?
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Kay's speed exposed move blah blah blah. Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
I I just think overall, just speaking on this group,
I think, you know, I think I've said it before.
I feel like I got a a nice starting five
hoop squad. I think that we've that we've filled in,
you know, a point guard, a two guard that can
shoot threes, you know, power forward. I really feel like
we got that in this room now. Maybe in the
(07:19):
past I felt like we had it. Maybe it just
didn't materialize like I would have hoped and thought it would've.
But you know, I've been really happy about where we're at,
you know, right now, just from my room from a
development standpoint.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Well, how much one on one dialogue do you have
with Nick about that kind of professional.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Approach to this game? Well, I mean I talked to
the entire room about it, you know, and that's that's
part of the experience, you know, that's the road I
went down, and just understanding the importance of being a
professional and in studying and being prepared. You know, those
are all things that you know, you kind of get
from me as a receiver coach. And and whether it's
(07:59):
weak a couple times a week, you know, really a
lot depends on what's going on on the field.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
You know, I I got a good gauge on my room.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Of Oh, I could tell you didn't study last night,
you know, so I I you know, or you didn't
get any rest last night, and you look like you
don't look that good today.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
So so I got a good gauge on 'em. Man,
how do you.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Think Nick learned to maybe handle some of the pressure
thrown his way last yeuson comes from you know, true
freshman is his playing a time, getting a lot of
attention from other teams?
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Like, how do you think he learned to handle all that?
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Well? I mean, I think part of it is just
Knick's makeup.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I mean, he's always yeah, I think I think since
the ninth grade that I think he have a heck
of a game in the state championship deal, and so
he's always he's always kind of been under a microscope,
so to speak, and just hear it. Just the microscope
just got a little bigger and and but he's really
really grounded, really down the earth, really cares about other people.
(09:01):
You know, it's really unselfish. So I I I think that,
you know, and he's a kid that doesn't get too
high with the highs or too low with the lows.
And and you know, he and I have great conversations.
You know, we talk about this journey that we're on
right now and and and doing it the right way
and you know, being humble through it. And you know,
(09:22):
I I think he listens, and and uh that's kind
of you know the product that you see.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
Course, uh Marsh was special last year for a seventeen
year old. But we've heard Collier's name a lot. Yeah,
what is it about Braylan that makes you think that
you know, he's advanced.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
You know, I mean, he's he's he's a really good
route runner to be as young as he is, you know, and.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
You know, it's got a good approach to the game.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
It's got a really good quickness, can take the top off.
And the deal is, you know, his name has floated
around something he's made, He's made some place, you know,
during the spring and in this fall, you know, he's
made some real, be tough contested catches and uh, you
know he's going to be he's gonna be a good player.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Man. Your guy's gonna be the kick returners. Somebody out
of your room. I still up for debate right now.
We haven't named that.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
You know, we got we got a couple defensive guys,
we got a couple offensive guys. Right now, we're still
you know, we're still kind of fine tune in that.
We're still almost two weeks out.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
So you know what a uh they never reminds you of.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
You, oh boy, hey yeah, height Uh, I'd say, I'd
say the humble side.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
I I I think that's where we're very similar.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
You know that that's you know, and I've told him that,
I think the approach to the game. You know, I
my freshman year and when we talked about it my
freshman year, I didn't catch a ball here, and then
you know, broke you know, all the records my second
year and and just you know, being kind of kind
of going down the same path, very similar path. But
(11:02):
I mean he's a humble dude with with you know,
a family, kid loves his family. Those are all those
are all the same traits that that that I have.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
As a receivers coach. How much work do you do
with Hayden? And what I what I the kind of
have you s?
Speaker 4 (11:21):
How much growth and development have you seen in him?
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Ah and been working with your.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Guys and communicating with your guys over the course of
the last few months.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Well, I just think for him, man, it's he's he's
an another year being in the offense. You can tell
that the game's slowing down for him, that he understands
the details of of our offense a lot better than
they did last year.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
You know, last year was his first year being the guy.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
You know, it's it's different coming into games and you
just got spot duty and defense prepare for you don't
but they don't really prepare for you.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
They prepare for the starter.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
I I I think he figured out, you know what
it takes them, the more studying he needs to do.
I think, you know, he's taking more of a leadership
role of actually grabbing the white outs and saying, Okay, look,
let's let's watch a little film. Let's let's get some
extra throws in. You know, you're seeing more of that
than you've seen last year. And and it's actually really
good to see you.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
You've seen a lot of the quarterbacks that have come
through this program in your time as a player and
a coach. But what does he have a chance to
be maybe the most dynamic to ever do it here.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I mean, he's got a skill set unlike a lot
of people that have come through here. Man, he's he's
a big kid, big strong kid that that can run
with the white outs. He's he's quick to tell me
that that I can put him out there and he
can run routes, you know, and and it's got a
big arm. I I think he does have an opportunity
to be, you know, as dynamic as as some of
(12:50):
the guys that have come through here.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
But we've had some we've had some great ones come
through now. So he's got a lot of work to
do to.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
To be number one. But I I think he's up
for the challenge. And it's really good to see his
growth and and you know.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Just his approach this year versus last year.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Well for some really scrimmag got Saturday, what stood out
made some progress.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
In your group?
Speaker 2 (13:13):
I just think the offense over all, the energy, you know,
my group, you know, we we we made some plays downfield.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
It was some opportunities to make some plays. Felt like
we played faster in this scrimmage. We had less in
Mays also. You know, it was it, it was good.
It was good. We left we left the field Saturday.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
You know, guys had a smile on their face and
and with some positive energy. I'd say the first scrimmage
we left off the field and then there was you know,
some guys had their head down.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Guys were pissed, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
About performance overall as an offense, but we were we
we made some strides this past weekend.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Oh, Kelly on garm Grove, Kelly McCrae came from spots
where they were kind of a focal point of their
passing game last year, wondering for year as their coach,
do you notice any benefit of that A guys who've
kind of been the guy and now they're kind of
trying to fit into a different situation. Maybe they're more
part of a team, I guess, but do you know
what I'm saying where they just sort of been the
the heavy lifters of the passing game at their last
spy as or benefit of that as you see as
(14:17):
you're coaching them.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Well, I just think the benefit is that they they
actually had some real field time, hm, you know, and
and they've they've you know, they've been in front of
the big crowd, they've made some plays. You know, we
can actually see that they you know, shown they've shown
us that they are that they can be productive receivers
versus you know, dealing on a gang of potential. I mean,
(14:42):
these guys have come in and and and blended in
and fit in, and everybody's trying to carve out their
role in the offense. And I I think that they
are doing a great job of of kind of figuring
it out, competing their tails off and you know, pushing
our pushing the ceiling of the room.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
And this, like I said, this is right now.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
You know, this will be one of the better rooms
that I've had in 'em in in in a few years.
Speaker 6 (15:10):
It sounds like the individual talent was all good, But
like what you're really saying is that like they could
be cause that individual talent comes together, but some of
the parts would be even greater than just like they're
really good individual talents.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
So this could be a very special room if at
all coup lessons. Yeah, I mean that's you said it
in a nutshell.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
I mean, you know, it's it's a lot of times
will be an eleven personnel.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
It's you know, three receivers.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
You know, they they've got to be able to work
off of each other. And and part of the deal
is we gotta make sure we got the right group
of guys on the field to execute. But like I said,
just overall, just the brotherhood in the room has been tremendous.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
You know, it's it's I need to put a microphone
in there some time and let you get a whiff
of these dudes in there.
