Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jack Kablin here with my good friend Matt Sloan a
graph of chemists. Big summer here, Matt.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
That's right, Jack.
Speaker 3 (00:05):
We got the summer savings going on right now at
Graft Nissan and Graft Chevy of Okamists. Great deals. We're
offering zero percent financing and select vehicles up to sixty months.
If you're a Casto member. We got extra rebates for that.
We're getting fresh inventory every day. It's been a great summer.
We got great deals for you.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Zero percent.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Can't get much lower than that. That's exactly right, Papacy,
Matt in the gang here on West Grand River, Okamiz.
They're making threads.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
We'll start on special teams a lot that hurt us
in that game. You think about pun obviously give them
a punk block for a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Can be tough to overcome. And so you look at it.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
We've misidentification, really had three guys, and so the three
guys are miss identified and starts with our preparations. Coaches
stematically and they'll look at todays probably the size on
the road crowd boise on punk play when you got
a lack of communication that way, so that hurt and
then it continued on one side in the coverage aspect,
(01:05):
and so there's a couple of things to go with that.
One is when you get protected now you can't get
you all the placement and.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
It's uh, we got a big time putt and he's
got a big time lag in this old adage.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
And kind of out kicking your coverage, well we got
he kicks a deep and also the placement of it.
We got to get closer to the sideline and use
the sideline's help in coverage. At the same time, wherever
he kicks some things, we gotta be able to cover
better when we get out of the lane or two
good athlete returning it.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
But that that did not help us. You think about
field position throughout, that's a problem.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
So we got to get better there, which had been
a strength for us, let's face the first four games,
but when it had been a strength was not. Last
Saturday kick off return we got to avoide and won
the ball. You know, we got to be able to
field the ball they're kicking off to us. However, the
wind made it tough. The communication that he's creating the
two got deep trust in the two that are trying
to field it.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
They got to communicate better.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
But that was a huge momentum play for them in
regards to the thing. You know, they came back, we
took the league, came back, the games tired, and they.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Get the ball up with an extra extra possession.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
So especially teams wise, it's a lot to clean up
that we need to do, especially if you.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Play on the road.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
You got to have better player the special teams units offensively.
I think eventually after the game too, he started this
two or fourteen on third down all right.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
So one, that's a terrible percentage.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
That's too many third downs in general, Well, what's leading
into that? Your first second down efficiencies, lack of run
game efficiency. Really throughout we gotta we gotta do it better.
We got to think about doing other other things too. Right,
we're sitting hearing well today players got to execut the
bring game. Then, well we got to start picture to
us on coaching side, schematics, those things in Elis and
(02:43):
the conversations yesterday as you looked into it past protection,
I felt during the game he showed it being worse
than it was on the field, and we got to
get a cleaner pocket for him again. Eleven Football offensively
eyes win. Yeah, the factor at times they made a
couple more pros into the win that we did.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I think that was a separat or two. But offensively
not good enough.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
Given those guys some credit when we had to have
it aggressive style and the fourth down thing we did actually.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Getting the third quarter to take the lead with that,
but not enough in the fourth.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Defensively, you know, you liked a couple of things about defensively.
One just overall from the se game where we were
flat out one good enough defensively come to this game.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Those guys responded.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
I thought they played with a response aggressive mindset. You
even look at what the situation the defense was putting
into the game's progressive field position. I think they had
five or six possessions started on their own side of
the fifty in.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
The defense vote up multiple times.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
I think real Union holistically at halftime things fourteen to seven.
We're probably fortunate to be fourteen to seven the way
the first half it played, and then you take the
lead toward the end.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Of the third quarter.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
So I think the team continues to show so resilience,
but it's back to back weeks where we got to
finish in the fourth quarter better. Back to back games,
had opportunities to finish thing in the fourth quarter, and
we got outplayed, out coached in the fourth and so
we got another opportunity to to do it better and
do it back at home.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Excited about that homecoming.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
And he's us to get back around our home crowd,
and I know our guys will be are rare they
go this Saturday and we're gonna need to You talked
about playing an opponent UCLA, who had maybe the biggest
win of college football year this last Saturday, and they
played that way. They were galvanized. What they showed done
that game against Penna City was impressive. I think the quarterback,
(04:42):
you know, highly touted, good player, five star, he played
like him this last Saturday, and so they got.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
A full attention that way with what he can do.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
That offense is galvanized and go in to sort a
budget points against a really really good team, played some defense.
They got a bunch of respect for for help getting
a wing like that. This last weekend's question.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Wow, that's when after it was the first time he
saw even struggle the season, really and who did you
see under the film and what were the conversations you've
had ever since that he started.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
What transpired and counts of queens. Yeah, I think, uh, yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
We we we need to play better. Uh, he wanted
to play better. Uh, he's competitive. We need to continue
to help him and think about the factors of the protection,
the lack of the run game, some of the down
the distances we had he did, Uh come back and
have a couple of plays in that game that reminded
of some of them last year. And Gartu may be
doing too much movement within the pocket, moving his eyes
(05:41):
a couple of times where he needed to trust that protection.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
And so with end, he needs to go back to work.
We need to continue to surround him.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
We gotta play better around him. But there were some
signs of last week then, yeah, that.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Were that were frustrated.
Speaker 6 (05:57):
Your post beautific side of a finding a way when
in your experience of what foundational principles will remain the same,
but what are some of the things maybe based on
personnel to them and what happened that you may be
open to quote unquote looking at changing tweekings, et cetera.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
I think we're always looking week to week on what
we learned from the previous game and want to do
it better or get it fit sot do it differently,
So that approach isn't totally different from just cause of
the outcome this last week versus call it week week one.
I do think, you know, looking at two games on
the road, the ability to finish it in the fourth,
we gotta find a way to do it better because
(06:32):
we've done it on the at home. You know, call
out Boston College going to double overtime and found a
way to to finish there.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
So we've done it before. I think that the the
previous two being on the road, we gotta.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
Do it on the on the road. Trying to curious
with the the maybe disor reaction it wins it lessons.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
These days, it seems like every winnings ex secial microscore.
Do you feel that as a coach in man? So,
how do you deal with that in today's dying?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Yeah, you feel that as a coach, and you try
to actually avoid when you win, or of glossing over
of things. I think about our punt thing right after
four weeks we had to buy oh, this is one
of the strengths.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
This has been a weapon for us, all these kinds
of things. So we got exposed uh in in the
fifth game. And so as a coach, I think they're
always urgent to find ways to improve, making sure.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
You don't got flaws that you don't recognize that your
opponent does whether you're you win Ordians. And then with
the fourth four year kind of issues is what do
you in those moments learn or is that something that
players have to maybe get more experience facing where they
can people led.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Together or what are this is the pieces that are missing?
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Yeah, you know, I think if we're experienced alongside of it,
uh for back to back games here again, I think
you're always you learn it from experience. And again this
doesn't mean all of a sudden I gotta put on
a Superman cave in the fourth and do something dramatically.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Different than the way you prepare. Uh.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
It comes down to a team seizing the momentum keeping
it in the fourth and you know we haven't done
it uh in back to back weeks. Jonathan, like you
mentioned the stuff s rass what adjustments you say, Well,
just let's think about specificy to the punt side of it.
When it starts with a protection communication, uh, and make
(08:10):
it we're we're making sound protection of getting boy thing kick.
Once it's kick, we gotta place it with some accuracy.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Right. The the placement of a a punt, especially with.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
The type of leg actually hats it's a big type
of lag that that's an important part. And then covers
you stay in your lanes, getting off block, standing in
the lanes so that we can round up oftentimes the
best athlete on their team, get put backyard as a
pump returner, all those things played.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
Two.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Separd thinks you're first when you look at where you
cla is right now, how much does your wrap for
them in the off.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Season and in the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
How much is that kind of go off of We
know when you have a head coach, you used to
do things and rambles that in me Lenny, tendencies that
you have.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yeah, you definitely decide the last couple of weeks with.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
The with the new coach, and so what that tape
looks like On the personnel side, you know this is
the same personnel.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
So you're going all the way back in your background
of what.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Those guys will look like for what is it, five
games now, even back in the off season, some of
their transfers the previous spots they've been at, so personnel,
why isn't need a large body to work the actually
stematics the last last couple.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Of weeks and kind of going back some of the
tay you mentioned about the offensive line, you did much
the tape back. Where did you see they the laitues
coming from and how do you kind of fix them?
And how much did you did you thought about.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
That or the last Steve?
Speaker 6 (09:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Yeah, I mean in protection, I think recurring that some
of the edges we played at, so the squeeze of
the pocket, the edge of the thing wasn't wasn't.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Firm enough up front at times.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Along with protection, the launch root of the quarterback can
needs to continue to be consistent, right, so by play
a why anticipation of where this guy's gonna be at?
Speaker 7 (09:59):
Is that set?
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Then a correctly on center nine? Those things we gotta
be exact two a quarterback. But we were on to
the edges, uh in protection and I know you've learned
about this probably I could the game on Saturday of
what was your reaction when you learned of that?
Speaker 6 (10:14):
UCLA because they can given knowing that they were all
in form of.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
That state was branded hot.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Yeah, before I watched the tape and so ill you know,
I'd say it has a new life to them.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
And then you think about the long travel.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
If you think about Penn State, were a little bit
of going across, having like a big emotional game the
week before. Then you put on the tape and watch
this game. Uh, galvan Knock's new energy aggressive. I'm talking
about UCLA now attacking the really in all three phases.
They they come out first, open, drive, go punch something in,
then kick off with they gamble, steal the possession right there,
(10:48):
of like they.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Were were a brand new, brand new team. Thinks of
Christmas as scambler.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
You don't see the differences to the UCLA bigger, small
the first three or.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Whatever, and then that last week River and the did
this happen? He played by you know, I don't know if.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
It's dramatically different, but you look at the quarterback and
how he hurt them with his legs, the ability to run.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
I know he's you know, he's one of.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Their leading rushers, but that part stood out, Uh how
he ran with the ball and really willingly uh made
some place for that.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
For that offense, they were much uh efficient moving the
ball against.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
A really good defense that that stood out maybe in
comparison to the week one and week two. You look
at the finish, even just a point call'em right, the
prettiest sweet Northwestern versus how many points did they score
this last week?
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Got? When that jumps off the page, that's okay? So
where where are your publics with the higher in the
band just starts in the dismiss week I'm sorry to
say it again with him high and they really yeah,
oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
I think, uh, both those guys have the potential, uh
for this This weekend's finishing a protocol with one of 'em.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
But by the end of the way, we'll we'll know.
So right how uh day to day there's now you
mentioned ever gave an offense? I didn't us an answer
there the fourth quarter each out the trolls, the four greer.
You look at those three possessions, three out, three out,
four and out.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
The third and four down the fields like a second
down and shoot pass.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
It on the neighborhood. Yeah, else, yeah, what what do
you look? What when you compartmentalize those three, three or
four possessions? Where did you see that? I think in
you you think a little bit of the execution.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
I said this term of coaches at all, the type
of the execution in those moments where I I it
was lacking. Uh, you know, when the field posion wasn't great,
thinking about the possession on the nine yard line. Second down,
we throw that swing route almost We threw the swing
route as if it was hot and the protection we
actually picked that up at the crowd noise, I don't
think we're on the same page. And there's a quarterback
on line online picks it up, Aiden thinks it's gotta
(12:46):
come out a little bit s uh sooner, the swing
route almost throwing it like a screen where's covered two
by those guys who make the tap of the loss.
Like that's lack of the execution on on both fronts. Again,
they go back to those moments where it it's still
there's no panic. The game is in the balance us
applying it, uh, not staying staying away from the third
and long and we faced the whole night, and that
showed it was.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
In the fourth court and his eyes and the right
see making your choice sense of those in the thirty
four and so so forth.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
A couple of them we'd love to have, you know,
have back again. It goes back to whether they protected well.
The previous SAT does not matter to go back to
this trust idea, and we hammered the pinion this isn't specific,
just the whole group in regarding to trust each other
doing their job so I could do my job and
focus on exactly what that individual needs to do. Quarterback, online,
(13:33):
route runner, defensive end, post safety, play caller, all of
us trusting others to do their job.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yeah, got it.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I think it was twelve negative yard each plays possible
way the game at this level when we have that
and other than a lot better, seems like.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
That was pretty much a complete team.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
You're talking about us offensive because we we got in
the back of looking at it we had Yeah, it's.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Hard to uh backwards, and that's why it's not one.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Yeah, what you're asking the player do stramatically and also
is there a better answer of doing positive plays?
Speaker 2 (14:09):
You think about the situation we.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Could have and so whether that's play calling, movement, identification,
on the road, executing.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
So we are not fighting the sticks at as as
much because the sad thing has showed up and some
negative runs.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Yeah, that that was that was a problem, and TV
focused on the bog with Aiden and Nick on the sideline.
Speaker 6 (14:32):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Is it as simple as a team saying where in
the web says get the wall? And when that happens,
if you've got a weapon like.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
That, how do you get to a man who in
regards to the you know those the conversation those two
I'll describe it as during the game I wasn't aware
of it, learned that after. I do think you're talking
about a couple of guys that this means a lot
to 'em in and are are pretty competitive.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
They're spots geting aout each other and on and.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
All of that.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
I do think, you know, Nick's really good player of
finding ways to continue to see is uh re count
of touches goes up, but he's not alone. Then I'd
look at a Marty Kelly Bean were really good player
for I think the targeted one one and so that
get the the was addressed discussed heavily, Uh, yesterday and
we're opening it looks a little different on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
So t your first Dune game as the coast year,
is there a little bit you know, act facts on.
Speaker 2 (15:19):
The road, you have a little sense of.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
Normalcy of the new game. After home and how you
mentioned UCLA and saying not going to go out away
and like your way and play nine am.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Basically there's time, you know how that actors the way
look at the game.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
I think we're definitely looking to the forward to a
noon kickoff back at home homecoming, uh, in front of
our fan base.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
The passionate fan base that we have, is that we're
excited about that.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Again, I can't speak told the u SCLA, but watching
them off tape on Saturday, I think they're gonna be
excited to play whatever time we're picking off.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
When you were about West, did you ever play new
and how oh Easter gre Orf, I.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Don't nothing jumping right to me. I'm staring back at
the V in the thing all the time. Yeah, I
don't think so. Yeah, the w it it seemed like
there were a lot of asses deep into difficult ways
I said they released down the field.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Is that like does a game play get adjusted when
you see the judicitions like that from what.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
It might have been and when you've kind of looked
back at that and sort of the approach and something.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
Trying to try to connect their.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Do you wish they're been a little more undereather, but
just a different, different way off.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
I think we can't just completely say no, we're not
gonna try it, cause we actually try it both ways
with the wind cutting a couple of overthrows and our
splits weren't gray type space and this and that vice versa.
I think there was a couple of throws that we
were going into it that were affected and we need
to drive that more and all that. So it it
played a factor. But I was not gonna say just
(16:48):
completely zero, we're gonna try it.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
A couple of those.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
I think it goes back to and you know, hindsight,
it's easy to do, but hide insight instead of handing
the ball offer of los and negga one, can we
throw a quick screen or something to that is, and
thinking about the factor of the wind tide side twenty point.
Speaker 6 (17:06):
I'm heard what you have Alessio his first real center
game manage obviously early.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
There and he is serious come out of Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
So there's just some silver linings all the time, you know,
and you get some frustrations when you lose Yan.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
I did think he stepped up in a big moment
such as early on.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
It takes a pretty good hit and needs to come
off unless he comes in and execute his race.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
To see, We've had a lot.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Of confidence in Alessio and I was glad for him
because when he's had some small amount of time in
the game and act gone his way and then even
that last dride, I think that that that stuff's important.
He goes in, he executes hits, it's another touchdown drives.
So we were released, uh, you know, for him, and
he's been working really hard to have that kind of success.
