Speaker 1 (00:00):
Week two of Pro football starts tonight with a little
Thursday Night football, and you're gonna hear that on our
radio station when I say good night at six o'clock,
it'll be the Commanders and the Packers from lambeau Field.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Awesome week one.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Hopefully Week two can live up to it a week ago.
The Philadelphia Eagles, We're able to escape the Dallas Cowboys.
It'll be a Super Bowl rematch between the Eagles and
the Chiefs over the weekend. Our next guest has become
a good friend of the show. Let's talk more football
with our buddy, Sam bruck House on a Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Sam, Happy Thursday, buddy. How are we doing?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
We're doing good. Premo show tonight on tonight that is
Jane Daniels versus Jo and Love.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
I'm excited to watch, Yes, sir.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Before we get there, let's talk Niners for a moment.
We've got a lot of Niner fans in the market.
I called the Steve Young effect, and I myself had
a forty nine.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Or Steve Young Jersey as a pup.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
But you know, ultimately, I don't think anybody would debate
the talent on the roster.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I don't think anybody would.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Debate the the you know, the the ability of the
head coach or the front office to construct teams.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
But they seem to be snake bitten, Sam, don't they?
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So George Kittle goes to the ir Rock Party out
two to five, they lose Juwan Jennings. They're already without
Brandon Ayuk. I mean, it's obviously getting late early. What
do you make of where we find ourselves with the
San Francisco forty nine ers.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
This was the crux of whether this team would have
a good year this year, both this year and the
year prior. Obviously it came around and bit them pretty
bad last year, but it's really gonna hurt with Rock
Party going out. I'm interested to see what Mac Jones
looks like. Kyle Shanahan typically has been able to be
a quarterback agnostic head coach. I think the sparkle of
(01:41):
this team that wasn't there last year was that the
defense performed pretty well against the Seahawks and Robert Sloss
seems to have brought back a little bit of shine
to Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and crew. But man, you
can't get more unlucky, and I think this really pulls
the forty nine ers down a peg, particularly in what
is shaped up to be a pretty competitive NFC West.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
All right, let's stick to the theme of a week
ago before we move over to what we could potentially
see coming up starting tonight with a great slate. You know, ultimately,
I still feel, and I think everybody would agree, the
Ravens are awesome, and it feels like this could be
their year. I get the Lamar stuff in the playoffs,
We've all seen it, and you know, they may have
(02:25):
just lost to that dude because Josh Allen is the MVP,
and I don't know if there's anybody in the league
at regardless of position, that's better at what they do
than Josh Allen. But what was you what were your
takeaways watching that Sunday and Night thriller in Western New
York last week?
Speaker 3 (02:39):
It felt like an AFC Conference championship game. I frankly
don't even think we can take away anything about the defenses.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Or maybe even the offenses, other.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Than that Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry and Josh Allen
and his crew are excellent, which is a great thing
to be able to take away. Obviously, because some of
the best players in the league are playing at an
extremely high level. In the week one, it was a blast.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
To watch him.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
They are sitting atop our EPA for Play rankings as
two of the most advanced of offenses in the league
on sumer sports dot Com. And I just want to
sit back and watch great football. And that's certainly what
we saw Sunday night.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
All right, Monday night was an interesting game for a
lot of people to witness because it was the first
game that we saw for Caleb Johns or Caleb Williams
under center with Ben Johnson as his coach, and JJ
McCarthy made his NFL debut. And I'll tell you what, Sam,
first three quarters the McCarthy stuff just look rough, and
I just so much respect for the kid for sticking
with it, and that fourth.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Quarter was brilliant.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
I'm not really buying into the whole, like, Okay, let's
write the book on Caleb Williams at this point. But
Game one of season two looked a lot like the
entire rookie season where there's just a lot of inconsistencies,
but the Vikings get to win in Chicago. How'd you
digest that one?
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:58):
I mean, I can't really say anything too great.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
About either of these players. They both played like young players.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Obviously, we saw JJ McCarthy be able to pull it
together and as he has frankly done since he was
in high school, the dude just doesn't lose.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
I have some real concerns about Caleb Williams.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Though people were very excited about the ten for ten start,
we're excited about how he was operating on the field.
I was not super happy about how he was operating
in the offense. Ben Johnson year every year, the now
head coach of the Chicago Bears former offense coordinator the
Detroit Lions, has been a bread and butter under center
play action guy, and frankly, we saw Jared Goff get
(04:39):
traded to the Lions because he could not operate in
that system. But he turned Jared Goff into perhaps the
best passer when it comes to under center play action,
and everyone expected for him to do the same with Caleb.
I did not see Caleb operate with the same amount
of discipline or middle of the field accuracy that we
saw from Jared Goff. That's the thing to keep an
(04:59):
eye on, and if he's unable to do that, I
kind of be worried about Bagent potentially coming in mid season.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
So Jackson Dart played his high school ball just about
ten miles where I'm broadcasting, and you know, the Giants
obviously could not move the ball at all against the Commanders.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
We'll see the Commanders tonight and Brian day ball Sam.
I mean, there's some pressure on him. It's not just
New York.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
It's just the fact that it hasn't looked great after
a pretty promising start.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Like I always use the term it's getting laid early.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
And it is only one game, But how long do
you think New York waits before young Jackson Dart's under
center for them?
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, it can't get much worse. They're sitting at twenty
eighth in the league and expected points have in per play.
You definitely want to perform better, especially against the division
opponent like the Commanders who they faced. I think you
got to give Russ a little bit more time. I'm
interested to see if they would go immediately to Jackson
Dart and out of Jamis Winston. I expected and had
(06:03):
heard that the plan was to basically try to pull
them Holmes off with Jackson Dart, but at some point
particularly when Brian dave All has talked to time and
time again about how Dart is his guy and they
have this great relationship and so.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Forth and so on.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
You have to give him the keys to the car.
The question I have is, how can you do that
with the quality of this offensive line? I mean, it
just looked stucred last week. You had Russ getting hit.
There was all kinds of things that were going wrong,
and I just don't think you can put a rookie quarterback.
So I actually wouldn't be surprised if we see Jameis
Winston first. Prior to seeing Jackson.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Dart as a Jets fan, I was queasy watching Aaron
Rodgers learn how to play quarterback again in met life
wearing another jersey. I will say this, I thought the
Jets offense looked pretty good.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
There's some juice there that I didn't think we were
going to see.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Justin Field's a bit of a lightning rod as far
as where you fall on him and tip of the cat.
Aaron Rodgers, as much as I cannot stand him, Steelers
roll in New Jersey and get a win over my Jets.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Sam, What do you think?
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Man?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I was so excited to see the Jets. We talked
about how we didn't really see the Ben Johnson Lions
DNA come through with Caleb Williams. Well, the guy they
let go to draft Caleb Williams.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
It's like he was incarnate of.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
The Lions DNA. They were running extremely hard, they were
extremely physical on offense. Moreover, he showed he could sling
the ball over the middle of the field. He was
our second best graded player in our Passing Summer Score,
which looks every tenth of a second at the performance
of players and evaluates them in a vacuum. And you
just gotta believe that Tanner Ingstron was very happy with
(07:45):
the way his offense performs. You gotta get that defense
in line. Basically, the mo of basically what happened for
the Steelers was they ran a ton of under center
play action, they were able to complete some deep passes,
kind of got lucky at the end. In the aggregate
really doesn't look all that great for them, and I
think we're seeing something similar to that we saw with
Russell Wilson in the Steelers' uniform last year, where they
(08:07):
may win a couple of games but fall off late.
They really performed about average in terms of all the
efficiency metrics. I think a couple of things went their way.
The Jets defense wasn't one hundred percent there yet, and
I think the Steelers are a closer team to keep
an eye on.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
And Aaron Rodgers may have had a ton.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Of touchdowns, but he really didn't do that well on
a snap by snap basis.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
I want to keep a close eye on that.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
I have a much better green light for your Jets
rather than the Steelers right now.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Love hearing that, Sam, I love hearing that. You know oftentimes,
and I'm certainly not the only media member.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
That's dropping this parallel, but when Patrick Mahomes started, you know,
becoming peek Patrick Mahomes, and we saw that magic weekend
and week out, it really felt like the NFL equivalent
to Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, and every
dynasty comes to an end. The Warriors, you know, they
randomly want to championship a couple of years ago, after
(09:01):
a lot of people had ritten them off. But it
does feel like we're in the fall slash winter of
the Stephen Curry experience. I'm not trying to panic. If
you're a Chiefs fan after one week and the Chargers
might be really good. But is there maybe a sense
that this dominant run from the Kansas City Chiefs might
be coming.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
To an end.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
If there's any panic, I don't think it should be
on the offensive side of the ball. They actually sit
as the sixth most efficient offense right now, and Patrick
Mahomes quite frankly had one of the best teams we've
ever seen in terms of his second half play in Brazil.
I think you got to tip your cap to the
Chargers on this one. The Chargers last year, we're in
(09:41):
a pretty conservative offense, despite having Justin Herbert, who I
think solidified himself as an MVP candidate in Week one
against the Chiefs. They have kind of changed the priority
of their offense. Last week, it looked like Justin Herbert
had a lot more.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Freedom the keys to the car to do what he wanted.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
And we saw Quinton Johnston progress, who all has struggled
with drops for a long time, but last year in
particular route running score started to look a little bit
better for us, and I kind of projected him as
a breakout candidate if he could just hold on to
the ball.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
He was able to do that in Brazil.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
That led to big games and the opening up for
Keenan Allen lad McConkey, who we know have been good
last season and season overseason for Keenan, and I think
this just shows that the Chargers offense may be something
that we believe in a little bit more than we
had in the past. Rather than a negative reflection on
the Chiefs, I think those two teams both have a
chance to win solidly above ten plus games.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Any concerned it all with the Bengals offense against the Browns.
I mean, the Browns clearly were you know, doing everything
they could to take Jamar out of it, and Burrow
I thought, just made sound decisions, but you know, seventeen
sixteen they were able to squeak out to win.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
I don't think the Browns are.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Very good and as you and I talked about not
too long ago, the Bengals over the past few years
have simply just been an average defense away from being
a contender. And they get a win early, which has
been their achilles heel over the past few years, as
you know. But takeaways from since He's win in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yeah, I think this is the first time we can
ever say that the Bengals are in the top eight
of any defensive statistic in the last two years. The
defense did look a little bit there. I think that's
more of a reflection on the Browns, but I just
want to highlight how excellent at Brown's defense was. Miles
Garrett showed why. For a very brief period of time
he was the highest paid player in the league and
(11:36):
now is the second highest paid player in the league
after Michael Parsons.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
He showed why, and then that opened up stuff on
the other side.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Isaah Maguire, the other defensive end, did extremely well in
his first game. And when you have two awesome defensive
ends and add a lot of talent around that, that
chalks up to a good defense. I think you're going
to have to worry about that Brown's defense. They may
be able to call some trouble for the rest the
AFC North. I think this is just another one of
those Bengals starts where you know they make some adjustments,
(12:06):
they figure it out as the year goes on. I'm
not super worried about Burrow and Chase, especially given they
were able to do what it takes to get the wind.
It didn't look great in the efficiency numbers, but I'm
not gonna move off my expectation for them.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
In the in the vein and area of overreacting massively.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
After one week, I will ask you.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Has the shine kind of fallen down a little bit
off Mike Mike McDaniel.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
In in Miami and film.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Yeah, it felt like he was just this wonder kins
that everybody thought was gonna lead Miami to the Promised Land.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
And maybe the cults are good.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
I don't know, Sam, but they got undressed and we
saw Zach Wilson under center in the fourth quarter a
panic meter for the Dolphins right now, Sam sounds like, what.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
It's not looking great?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
And Spence, I come on here and talk in terms
of data and all these things that we see in
productivity and stuff like that, and sometimes I think it
may just come down the vibes. And I need to
look at the vibes a little bit more because I
was really bullish on the Miami Dolphins. We haven't seen
Mike McDaniel lead an offense without his starting quarterback that
has been bad. They frankly just have not been bad.
(13:16):
And last year they were able to add a defensive
coordinator in anthy Weaver, who brought that team, really drug
that team, despite injuries and all kinds of hooplah, to
a top ten defense. I thought that was going to
be much of the same last year, that they were
going to be able to buckle down despite all the
strange preseason happenings, and that good coaching was just gonna
(13:37):
win out. That is not what we saw on Sunday.
I do wonder if this is just a fluke and
the worst get worse. You may remember years ago the
game where Mike McDaniel actually beat the Denver Broncos and
Sean Payton by a score of like seventy to twenty. Well,
that Broncos team ended up kind of squeaking around the
playoff race. Perhaps something like that will happen for the
(13:57):
Miami Dolphins. But I don't really have any data behind
this one. I think the vibes are just off in
Miami and I can't really explain it.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
A week ago tonight before we move over into the
Week two slate, I think most people figured Philly would
run away from Dallas, and obviously Jayden Carter getting getting
kicked out six seconds into the game, it was gonna
hurt you. Probably the best defensive player on that team
and one of the best defensive players in the league.
And if CD makes a couple of catches, look, he's
(14:25):
still had one hundred and ten with seven catches, but
I think he had four drops.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Dallas was dangerously close to winning that game.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
One week ago tonight, what'd you make of the Cowboys
Eagles game?
Speaker 3 (14:35):
It's been from someone was very wrong about to someone
I was very right about. I thought the X factor
in that game was going to be a Dori Jackson,
the cornerback, and boy did Dak Prescott tick on him
all game. And like you mentioned, if Ceedee Lamb makes
a couple more catches and doesn't have some very uncharacteristic drops,
Ceede Lamb probably has over two hundred yards. And we're
(14:56):
talking about the Cowboys overcoming the Michael Parsons trade.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
The defense didn't look too bad.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
They were very, very badly hurt by the scrambling ability
of Jalen Hurts, and you know, not for nothing, would
have been great to had Michael Parsons to stop that.
But I think this offense is just going to be
a good offense, especially if Clayton Adams the offensive coordinator.
Brian Schottenheimer the head coach who was the offensive coordinator
last year, are able to scheme up the detailed and
(15:22):
interesting run concepts that they did against the Eagles, a
lot of cool gap scheme, pulling a lot of misdirection,
and they were able to get those young into your
offensive linemen going. They sprung Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders
a couple of times. I think this matchup between the
Eagles and the Cowboys is a lot more close than
people expect, and it basically came down to drops in
(15:45):
a fumble. And when you're getting in those close games
like that against really top tier teams. And I will
note I think the Eagles left side of their offensive
line was a little banged up, so I don't know
how much to put stock into their performance, but I
think that we may really have some with this Cowboys offense,
and I think the Eagles defense may have a massive
worry in their secondary moving forward.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
All right, let's move over to some of the Week
two stuff, and we'll start with tonight because I think
it's gonna be an awesome game. And I've oftentimes been
a critic of Thursday night football. Sometimes I think the
turnaround leads to port play. But last year I think
the Thursday night tills were pretty good and this one
should be really really good tonight.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Jordan Love our local.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Kid who played at Utah State, Jayden Daniels once upon
a time, our PAC twelve buddy before he left us
for the SEC Packers, getting three in the hook at Lambeau.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
How do you think it goes down tonight?
Speaker 3 (16:35):
I think it comes down to Jayde Daniels, the rookie
of the year. Right now, they have about an eight
point three to three percent sack rate. That's not very good.
The Washington Commanders are twenty second in that statistic. But
Jadan daniels kind of superpower is his ability to not
get sacked very deep behind the line. He'll run around,
He'll try to figure it out. Patrick Holmes also does
(16:56):
this a little bit as well, and it'll end up
kind of being right around the chain when he ends
up getting tackled. I don't know if that's going to
be the case. You look at Michael Parsons last week,
really only played in pass rush situations. Ends up getting
three pressures, was really impacting the game. Ends up getting
a sack, which I think was a little bit more
Jared Goff's fault there, But what it really did was
(17:19):
open up the highly paid defensive end on the other side,
where Sean Geary and Devonte Wyatt the defensive tackle. That's
nothing to say that Edrin Cooper is still in that defense,
and I think we may have one of the best
front sevens we've seen collected in quite a long time
with the Packers, if they're able to dominate a kind
of newly constructed offensive line. With the Commanders, you got
(17:41):
Josh Connery at the right tackle, you got one of
the best left tackles in the league. But in a
new scheme in Laramie Tunsel, that's the real key matchups
I want to see. I want to see the young
tackle and one of the best tackles in the league
go against two extremely highly paid, very effective edge rushers,
and I want to see how Jane Daniels manages that
in this Whoever wins that battle will probably win the game.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Can my New York Jets make it interesting against the Bills?
The Bills are a six point five point favorite at
met Life.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
That'll be a.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Sunday morning tilt. Can my Jets make that game interesting?
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Sam?
Speaker 3 (18:15):
Look, I think It's going to come down to their defense.
If their defense can put up any fight against a
team which now has Keon Coleman going over one hundred
yards and has James Cook running wild and has two
of the best tackles in the league. If they can't
stand up to that despite the talent on that Jets defense,
I think we may see the Bills kind of inflict
(18:35):
the pain that we've seen them inflict on the Jets
in previous years. But I'd really love to see another
shootout here. I think if Tanner Inscer can continue the
march forward with Justin Fields add in successful runs which
he did at in the middle of the field passing,
I'm worried about that Bill's defense. I was worried about
him last year. They've basically changed nothing in that defense,
(18:58):
whether personnel or scheme. I think the Jets may be
able to take advantage of that, given the weapons that
we saw utilized in Week one, and so I really
am hoping for a shootout, but I think that the
ability for Josh Allen to manage the game may lead
to this one getting out of control.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
In the fourth Super Bowl rematch, of course on Fox,
is the game everybody's talking about, which is the Eagles
and the Chiefs, where Philly is a slight favorite, even
though they will be on the road. They're at Arrowhead,
So we already talked about both these teams and their
performance from a week ago. Of course, a lot of
people are going to be watching this one. How do
you think it goes down?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
I think this is a very interesting matchup because it's
weakness on weakness. I talked about that rough secondary play
that we saw from the Eagles, particularly at that cornerback
to position and at the safety position. But who do
the Chiefs really have to attack that weakness. They don't
really have anyone at the wide receiver position. Xavior Worthy
is a little banged up, Travis Kelcey's a little old.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
So it's really going.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
To come down to Mahomes. If we see Mahomes have
a vantage game, I think this is a Chief victory.
I also want to see the other players on the
other side of the ball, Chris Jones, Trent McDuffie, and
Steve Spagnola, the defensive coordinator, have a vintage Chief defense game.
But I think when it really comes down to it,
if Mahomes plays well, I'm going to go with the
Chiefs here.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Sam, let me ask you about, you know, Arch Manning,
the upcoming quarterback class that a lot of people are
talking about that some people believe certain teams in pro
football are already looking towards. How real, in your opinion
is as this upcoming quarterback class and what sort of
NFL quarterbacks you think are contained in it, are teams
(20:36):
doing the right thing to kind of look ahead?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
In your opinion?
Speaker 3 (20:39):
This has been something that I've kept a very close
eye on, even into last college football season, where everyone
was hyping up how deep this quarterback class would be.
Names like Garrett Knutsmyern, names like Arch Manning, names like
Drew Aller, Leonora Sellers, so forth, and so on. There
certainly will be a lot of draftable guys.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
I worry about.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
How high end any of that talent really is. I
think we were really betting on Arch pulling away. It
looks like he's a little banged up, injured, not able
to really get a ton of whiz on the ball,
or at least not what we saw from last year.
I think we're going to have to see him progress
as a passer. I worry about how Garrett and Nussmeyer
can really go to the next level given his kind
(21:22):
of general inability or unwillingness to move out of the pocket.
We saw that change a little bit in a good
matchup against Clemson, but he wasn't really able to find
the easy receptions that he was finding in a game
prior against Louisiana Tech, which was a little bit of.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
A red flag.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
And then you add in the guys like alt Oller
and Lenora Sellers, and they seem to make the same
mistakes over and over again. I think this may be
a class like the one where you saw, you know,
Jalen Hurts or Dak Prescott, like you may be able
to pick up a guy like that who has kind
of a broad distribution and maybe ends up being an
NFL level.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Quarterback after a couple of years. But I just don't.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
I think this has high level talent like the Borough year,
like the Jade Daniels, Caleb Williams yere. I think teams
that Hank are going to be sadly disappointed in the
quality of the quarterbacks come November.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Sam, before we say you lose, I play in a
fantasy football league where we start two quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Brat Perdy is heard. Do I start Aaron Rodgers or
Mac Jones?
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Man, I gotta stick with Aaron Rodgers. Just from what
we saw last week.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
I think Mac Jones has just too big of a distribution,
and we've seen this Shanahan offense go south, particularly when
we saw guys like Nick Mullins in the fit and
stuff like that. I think this is going to be
a run heavy game, particularly since Christian McCaffrey is like
literally the only person even remotely healthy, and they also
have Brian Robinson back there as well. I think that
(22:48):
this is going to be kind of a Shanahan let's
see what we can call game. But I you know,
he allegedly really loved Mac Jones back in the day.
They ended up picking Trey Lance time as a flat
surf Now he's a forty nine or much like Sam
Darnold was several years ago. So I think it's a
tough ask. But I think I'd stick with Aaron Rodgers.
But if you can get a running quarterback somehow, Spence,
(23:11):
I'd try to do that.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Yeah, Jayden's my QB one, So I'm good there, Sam.
I appreciate the advice. I need to win before we
set you loose. Where can people go get your work?
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Go check us out sumersports dot com or the Suomer

producers are really locked in. You can watch some film,
there's great data, and we're also sharing some proprietary data
on there as well.
