Speaker 1 (00:02):
You're listening to The Elijah Winfrey Show, a space for inspiration, impact,
and community connection. Each week, Elijah shares the latest on
his work in the community, answers listener questions, and reflects
on the week that was, from acts of kindness to
real conversations that matter. This is where purpose meets positivity.
(00:22):
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Here's your host,
Elijah Winfrey.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Hello, folks, and welcome to The Elijah Winfrey Show. I
am indeed your host, Elijah Winfrey. I'm excited to be
with you today. We have a tremendous show on deck.
Your questions as always lead the way. We I shouldn't
say we. My producer goes into the email bag and
(00:59):
pulls out some great questions, so I can't wait to
get to those. I hope that you're a week has
gotten off to a good start. I know we are
in the middle of the week as I sit here
and think about things, but I hope that things are
progressing for you. For me, things are going pretty well.
(01:19):
I gotta tell you. Really reflecting on things, and you know,
I think sometimes we talk about resetting and refocusing. We
say it to ourselves, we say it to other people.
But when we actually do it, oh my goodness. You know,
(01:41):
I've seen and felt a change in my body physically
as well as mentally. You know, there were a lot
of things that I wanted to.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Do this summer.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I mean a lot of them, folks, A lot of
things on the schedule that I wanted to do. But
I knew that I needed to stop. I needed to reset,
not slow down. I needed to stop and sort of
reboot again, and I needed to remove some things in
(02:21):
order to be as fresh, as authentic, as genuine, and
as alert as I could be.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
And I gotta tell you.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
It's working. It's working. I've been able to space some
things out regarding my schedule, which has been so beneficial
to me, so beneficial. I didn't think that I was
going to be able to pull it off. You know,
(02:58):
we all we all get to a point where we
think that, you know, we can, we can push through.
And if we if we just pushed through, everything will
be okay, because the results will give me the energy
to keep going. Nope, I needed to like pull some
things back. I now honestly can say, you know, I
love walking. I absolutely love it. It is part of
(03:24):
my daily exercise ritual, and I try to do it
every day.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I try to.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Walk at least at least three and a half four miles.
Right now I'm at five, and I am seeing the benefits.
I walk with a good friend of mine, mister Dee.
I mentioned him on the show quite a bit, and
he got this started for me. You know, he talked
(03:52):
about his health issues. You know, he suffered two heart attacks,
and you know he he was told, listen, exercise walking,
it's gonna help. And you know, he walks about ten
miles a day in the morning, maybe ten. I know
(04:17):
he's talked about that. But he's up there and he
and I started walking, and at first I was kind
of like, I don't know if this is for me.
I'm gonna be honest, I don't know if I want
to be walking five six miles and not seeing any benefit.
(04:39):
But there is a benefit. And the more I did it,
the more it really started to change the way I
went about my day. I had more energy to attack
the day. So this past week, I'm just I'm really
starting to see the benefit. And I do have some
(05:02):
things going on that I'm gonna get to in a moment,
but I just think it's it's so important that we
check in with ourselves consistently, honestly, genuinely check in with yourself.
(05:22):
It's been one of the best eye opening things that
I think I've done in my life. Seriously, my past week,
you know, business as usual, I can say with clarity
and confidence, full of confidence. Actually, my fifth children's book
(05:47):
is done. We're done with the editing process. I am
so excited about that. Now, it still won't be out
for quite a while. We're gonna go through the the
necessary processes to make sure we get it right. And
this isn't important. This is an important book. All my
books are important. But this story, you know, as I'm
(06:08):
starting to really write and pull from my childhood and
just being creative, this is a pretty deep story that
I've written, centered around responsibility, and I cannot wait to
share it with you. And as we continue to process,
(06:32):
we move to the next steps. Now I will keep
you posted on that. But I am really excited about
this project more so than any other because this story
that I've written has hit me. And I think it's
(06:53):
because I've really just sat down and piece by piece
put this together. Not that I didn't again, I did
that with all my stories, but this is just different.
It's different, and I can't wait for you to check
it out. So I finished that process. I am going
(07:14):
to be doing a special reading in collaboration with Restoration
of the Arts. You know you've heard of them before,
Miss Deborah, I've had her, I've interacted with her. I
got to get her on the show. Actually, she is
the founder of Restoration of the Arts and what she
does with the youth in the community is tremendous, and
(07:38):
you know, I am excited to once again collaborate with her.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
And not only are we going to be doing.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
This, this book reading on August fifteenth, and I encourage
you all to show up if you can, part of
their children's book reading and masterpiece program August fifteenth from
eleven am to twelve thirty pm at the Tuck Willis Center.
So I encourage you all to stop by if you
can check in and say hi. I will be So
I'm coming back from not I'm gonna be on vacation,
(08:08):
but I'm taking a day out of my vacation to
come back to read to kids and to connect with
Deborah and everybody at Restoration of the Arts because we're
also going to be collaborating again during the holidays and
making sure that family is in need, you know, receive
gifts for Christmas, make sure the holiday is special for them.
(08:29):
So I'm excited about that collaboration as well. I'm just
super excited. So I've been working on those things, getting
ready for the upcoming school year.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Yes, I did say it.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
I am pretty excited about it, I must say.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
You know, I think.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I am mentally ready to you know, attack the school
year in a positive way, not a negative way. Maybe
attacks the wrong word. I'm really motivated. Let me say that,
I'm really motivated for the upcoming school year with the
changes we'll get to see, like what steps have been
(09:13):
taken to make sure that we're all in positions to succeed.
So I am super excited about about that. Family is
doing really good. You know, we're you know, they're busy
as always. As as I said on previous shows, my
kid is starting high school here shortly, and he's excited
about that, or at least I think he is, you know,
(09:37):
so time flies by, right, like I remember when he
was sure. Now he's taller than me. He's about six two,
approaching six three status. So he's doing well hanging out
with his friends. So you know, there's not There's a
(09:57):
lot to be thankful for, right, A lot to be
thankful for, and I am so my week, My past
week was pretty good. This week has started out really well.
I am back on the peloton, so I did a
peloton ride. So for those who are peloton fanatics like myself,
I hadn't been on the bike for a while, so
(10:18):
I started to to change that. This morning before the show,
before I got to the studio, I hopped on the
bike for twenty minutes. Miss it, love it. I still
do a lot of floor exercises pertaining to peloton. I
also go to we have a I think it's yea
(10:40):
twenty four hour fitness here.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
In our area that I go to for the steam room, for.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
The hot tub, for leg day, for stretching. It just
depends basketball so it just varies. So I'm trending in
the right direction all right. I feel like all the
little nicks and knas are healing nicely. I am working
on my sleep, which is something I struggle with terribly, terribly.
(11:15):
I am going to be doing a sleep study in
home sleep study first and then we're gonna go to
the facility and do one there. I am excited about this.
This is something that's that's been needed for a while.
I've done a sleep study in the past, and I
(11:36):
don't know if we didn't get the results that we
were looking for, but it was years ago, and you know,
I'm hoping that this time we're able to nail some
things down and get on some type of schedule or
program that will help me sleep better. So I am
getting the help that I need.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Folks.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
You know, I'm not just settling in it or I
always say that. You know, it's part of life, and
it is, but you know, I am also trying to
help myself, you know, be better in that area. So
that's it. Those are the updates. All right, Let's get
into the show. My amazing producer, Greg nice As always
(12:22):
pulls from the email bag every week and he always
pulls out some great questions. We are also going to
do a I think he calls it, what do you
call it? A lightning round toward the end of the show,
and I think I think I know some of the questions.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Did I didn't? I didn't, I didn't peak, But.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
I know my producer really well all right, okay, let's
get into some of these questions. Each week, we encourage
you all to send questions into me at Elijah dot
Winfrey at gmail dot com, and you all never disappointed.
We have so many questions we haven't even gotten to
that we hope to get to as the show progresses,
but we really encourage you to keep sending them in
(13:10):
and we do. We'll do our very best to answer
these questions. I am always thrilled at the amount of
questions that are sent in each week, and.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
You all never disappointed.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
This first question is from Charlotte in North Carolina. Charlotte writes, Elijah,
how's your health been lately and what's been keeping you
energized this week?
Speaker 3 (13:33):
My health is good. I will say.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I've done a really good job of hydrating, eating properly. Now,
when I say eating properly, folks, I don't mean I'm
not one of these health fitness gurus who's just eating
green plants, green vegetables.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Right.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
I eat my vegetables, but you know, I try to.
I try to eat things that I like, and you
have to be careful with that. You know, you can't,
you know, eat a lot of greasy foods and and
then't expect to be, you know, full of energy. So
(14:17):
I do a good job of making sure that I
don't you know, clog my body up with with a
bunch of jump. But you know, I do eat a
lot of fruit, protein bars. I like greens. I'm a
big collared green guy. I love broccoli, spinach, you know, rice,
(14:42):
baked potatoes. So you know I'm doing good from a
health standpoint, I am, and I think, you know, on
top of all of that, you know, working out has
been so beneficial. I'll be honest with you. It's it's
really saved my life in a sense, it really has.
(15:05):
And you know, I'll get into that on another show,
on another episode. But things have been doing really well.
They really have, and I am really happy with the
way that I am trending. So as far as what's
been keeping me energized this week, gosh, I think the
(15:35):
projects I'm working on right and the ideas I have.
You know, there's some things that I'm working on currently
behind the scenes that I'm hoping to see the day
of light.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
You know.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
I I have a lot of ideas that that always
keeps me on my toes every week, and I try
to focus on one or maybe two ideas at a
time as a post. Those are like thirty that I
have going off of my head. So I have a
couple of things this week that that kept me energized.
I think finishing the fifth Children's book. You know, that's
(16:12):
energized me in a sense. And and so I'm I'm
I'm grateful for that. Great question. Next question is from
Darnell in Chicago. Darnell Rights, we all know you stay acted.
Have you tried any new workouts or wellness routines recently? No? No, No,
(16:36):
no real new workouts or wellness routines. I try to
stick to the basics, right. I try not to complicate
things around my wellness and in my workouts, right. I
try to keep it simple. I'm not trying to I'm
not trying to be a bodybuilder or look good for
(16:57):
anybody other than myself. Uh And and you know, from
a wellness standpoint, I talk to myself every morning in
the mirror. I know it seems weird to some people,
and I know some people may giggle when I say that,
but you know that's the routine for me. It's basic,
it's simple. You know what do I hope to accomplish today?
Or am I on my energy level?
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Right?
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Am I being honest? You know about you know the
goals that I set for the day, are they really attainable?
So I think about you know that stuff, and I
try to keep it as simple and basic as I can, right,
I don't want to complicate things I don't and it's
worked for me, so wat change. Next question is from
(17:44):
Jasmine in Atlanta. Jasmine rights, Elijah, the new school year
is right around the corner. What's one thing you're most
excited about as a parent educator. I'm excited about, you know,
getting back with my team, seeing what they've been up
to throughout the summer. I have seen a couple of
them this summer and they seem like they've been doing
(18:08):
really well. I'm excited about the upcoming school year because
I want to see what changes are being implemented. You know,
we have a new principal, new assistant principal. Teachers have
moved around a bit, so I am anxious to see
(18:30):
how things start right, Like, there's there's there's a learning curve,
and you know, we all have to give each other
grace each school year, right, whether you've been there or
whether you're new. You know, sometimes the kids grow mentally
and physically over the summer. Sometimes it's you know, it's
(18:51):
still the same, you know, there's not much growth there.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
But I'm looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Getting back in classrooms and and help when these kids
be better human beings, right, you know. I I assist
the teachers a little bit, you know, But for me,
it's about trying to instill core values and life skills
into the kids as much as I can, because you
want them all to be better, you know, better people
as they grow. And this is the this is the
(19:19):
time and the age where you really want to you know,
hone that in and I'm excited about that, I am.
Next question is from Greg and Seattle. Greg Rights, do
you have any personal goals for work for your work
with students this upcoming year? No, I don't know if
(19:45):
I have personal goals, like I want to see them
all succeed and do really well.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
What that looks like.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
Personally for me, I you know, I don't know because
I don't know who I'm going to be uh sitting
next to or interacting with, So I don't know if
I have any personal goals pertaining to that. I will
say that, you know, I want to be present as
(20:15):
much as I can this year. I think last year
because I was trying to do a lot of things right,
Like you know, I wear a lot of hats.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
You know.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Sometimes you know, you fumble the you fumble the ball,
and you know your body starts to shut down.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
And I was. I was pretty sick.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
A couple of times last school year, and you know
there was a point I tried to rush back. That
wasn't a great idea, you know. So I think, you know,
a personal goal for me is to make sure that
I'm there as much as I can right and try
not to be absent a lot. And I think I'm
(21:02):
on pace to do that.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Right.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
And and you just never know what your body is
going to be like when you wake up in the morning.
But you know, that's that's a personal goal. Outside of that,
you know, I'm just anxious to see the kids, and
you know, whatever I'm needed to do, I am going
to be I'm going to try as hard as I
can to do that. That's a great question, Greg. Next
(21:27):
up is Sophia in Boston. Sophia rights, if you could
describe your perfect first week back at school in three
words what would they be?
Speaker 3 (21:41):
And three words gosh, Sophia, and three words fun.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Informative, and excited or excitement. So that's what I'm looking for.
I guess that's a good quest. I've never thought about that, right,
Oh my gosh. Next question is from Maria in California.
(22:21):
Maria Rights, what's one small thing you've done this week
to take care of yourself mentally and physically.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Like I said at the top of the show, I.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
You know, I'm really starting to pull back from things
that I may have committed to right and taken time
for myself, you know, I contrary to you know what
I'm what I'm saying to you now, I've been pretty
(22:52):
busy and active this summer. Right, So it's not like
I've sat on my butt the whole summer.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
I haven't.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
I've been active. I've been busy. I've been you know,
interacting with families. I've been you know, making sure that
you know, uh, they're getting grocery gift cards and and
and mentally they're okay.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
You know.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
I've kind of listened to the stories and and been
in the community. So I I've been around, uh in
in that sense, but I've also because of my schedule
change and been able to say the day is just
my day. I ain't I'm not doing anything. I'm not
answering text I'm not answering emails. You know, I am
(23:32):
gonna work out, I'm gonna walk, I'm not turning on
the TV. I'm gonna lay across the bed and just
look at the ceiling, or or you know, try my
best to take a nap, or I'm gonna meditate. So
I I I've tried to do that this week, last week,
the week before that, and again I'm seeing the benefits
of that.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
And there's power in saying no to things.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
And for a long time, I would say yes to
a lot of stuff, not to make other people happy,
but because I really thought I could do it. And
I did do it the majority of the time, but
it was at a cost. I didn't have any gaps
(24:22):
where I could like really shut down and reset. So
you know, I not that I'm doing that. I'm really
enjoying my summer for the first time in a long
time because I'm spending more quality time with myself. So
I've done that this week, Maria, I've done it this week,
(24:43):
and I'm thankful I'm grateful that I've had to afforditude
to do it and to say no to things when invited. Right,
I've always been that way though, Like I've always you know,
been that person to say, hmmm, no, I'll think about it.
If I say I'll think about it, that normally means
(25:04):
I probably won't do it, right, I should just say no.
I think for me that was the polite way to say. Nah.
Now I just say no, I'm not doing it, and
it's been refreshing and I'm good with that. Right, And
you find out where you stand with people when you
say no, you do. So I'm doing well mentally and emotionally,
(25:27):
doing well. All right, let's take a couple more questions.
How many how much time we got?
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Okay, well, let's keep going a little bit. We got
about five more questions here to answer, and then we'll
get into the lightning rhyme before we close the show.
This next question is from Terrence in Houston. Terrence, right, right,
what's one unexpected or funny moment that happened to you
last week? Okay, so there's only one that comes to mind.
(26:00):
And I do this every now and then, right, I
have to I can get a case of the giggles
where I laugh uncontrollably for like maybe four or five minutes.
I'm not I'm not kidding you folks. Like if something
silly or or really funny to me, I can go
and my wife can attest to that, because sometimes she'll
(26:24):
start it, like recently, she did this this past week,
and she knows, and sometimes she'll get a camera out
and try to record me as I'm you know, I'm
laughing hysterically, and and it's about something silly, right, there's
nothing serious. It's just something somebody said and the way
they said it, where somebody did something physically that I
thought was hilarious.
Speaker 3 (26:45):
I'm just rolling.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
So I will say that like it, and it just
happens unexpectedly like it just if I'm watching We're watching Okay,
this wasn't this week, but maybe maybe a couple of
weeks ago. We're watching Alfred Hitchcock and the episode just
didn't make sense at all. And there was a part
in the in the episode where something was said and
(27:15):
I just I just lost it and we're in bed
and I'm just laughing, and she just pulls out the
camera and she catches me right at the end because
she doesn't think that I'm gonna She thinks at some
point it's gonna stop, and it doesn't for about five minutes.
So and I repeat the dialogue that I've seen that
(27:36):
made me laugh, and then I'll just go. So you
gotta be around to see that, because I don't know.
Some people might not like that, but I think it's
pretty funny when I do it, So that's one thing.
Next question is from Layla in Miami. Laila writes, Elijah,
if you could have dinner with one with any historical
figure this week, who would it be and what would.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
You asked him?
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Any historical figure I'm assuming did her alive, I would say,
you know, the obvious answer for me is doctor King, right,
and James Baldwin or Tony Morrison, like I would. I
(28:23):
couldn't go wrong with any of them for dinner, but
it would probably be probably Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I'm curious
about her and I would love to sit down and
(28:46):
have dinner with her and to talk about her life,
the ups and downs, how she has sended to you know,
the Supreme Court, and how does she really view the
(29:07):
world through her lens, not through mine, but through hers,
So I would love to kind of sit down and
chat with her about that. I think that'd be fascinating,
it would be Next question is from Ben and Denver
Ben Wrights Eli, what's a song that perfectly matches your
(29:28):
mood right now?
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Yes? Okay, So I here's a secret.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
I like a lot of instrumental songs, songs with no lyrics,
like because I like beats rhythm, So I would probably
say like something from Epic Score, My My My two
favorite songs from Epic Score is I Still Have a
(29:57):
Soul and Time Will Remember Us. I love those songs
when I go on my walks. Those are in the
playlist for sure. They are in the playlist. Set Fire
to the Rain by Adele. It's been in my head lately.
But I'm a Dell fan, so I I like her work.
(30:20):
But I like a lot of instrumental stuff right whereas
let's or no lyrics and I'm just walking to the
beat and I'm either as i'm doing it, I'm thinking
about things, debating about either a speech or something that
(30:40):
I'm going to be involved in, or I'm just trying
to clear my head. So I would say anything those
two songs by Epic score right now, time will remember
us or I still have a soul. Those two can't
go wrong. Let's take two more questions before we hit
our lightning round. Question is from Harper and Portland. Harper writes,
(31:04):
if your past week was was a movie, what would
the title be?
Speaker 3 (31:16):
If my past week was a movie? Oh, I'm stuck.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
I don't know I was a movie. Oh maybe this
one any which way you can. I watched that movie
as a kid. Clint Eastwood's in that movie and he's
with there's a pet eight that he has and that
(31:49):
you know, he's kind of like this kind of like
this street fighter, street boxer, and he fights for money. Uh,
and he kind of goes about things any which way
he can, And that was the title of the movie.
But I would say that any rich way I can. Like,
I'm trying to do things in a multitude of ways,
so that would probably fit right now, subject to change. Okay, Well,
(32:14):
more from this question is from Isaiah and Phoenix. Isaiah writes,
what's one random fact you learned this week that surprised you?
Speaker 3 (32:27):
One random fact? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
I don't think there's a random fact that I've learned
this week. I have to look into that or think
about that one random fact. Sorry, I couldn't answer that, Isaiah.
I I am stuck. I'm stumped on that one. There
isn't I don't think I've no, no, not one.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
My producers like no, no, no one, no fact. No.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
I'll think about it, though, for sure, I will. All Right,
great questions. I can't even talk right now. Great questions,
Folks continue to send him in at Elijah dot Winfrey
at gmail dot com. As always, I love answering those questions,
and I am honored that you've taken time to sennim
in Right now before we close the show, we're gonna
(33:18):
we're gonna do a lightning round my producer, you know,
before we go live. He's always asking me these personal questions.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
But they're fun.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Uh and from time to time, you know, he he
he wants to add him to the show. So we're
gonna do that this week. And the first one is
and they're gonna go quick, all right. The first one
is coffee or tea?
Speaker 3 (33:52):
Coffee. I love tea, but you know I'm a coffee guy.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
I should say, yeah, yeah, best snack you've had in
the past seven days? Okay, Nah, were talking because he
didn't ask me this before the show started. I like
these Zebra Strike Strike cakes. I get them at the
grocery store. Oh my gosh, love them.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
I also like.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
The nutty bars. I love those. Little Debbie is no joke.
But I like zebra cakes. I love them. I so
I'll go buy I have to buy two boxes because
I could eat one box like in an hour. And folks,
let me tell you right now, that's not necessarily the
(34:46):
best thing to do from a health standpoint, but I
you know, I do it. I have my days where
I kind of mess up with foll it in. But
I love zebra cakes. I absolutely so. I've had those
and I still have one more.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
Uh. And here's what I do, which is so silly
and funny. So I'll take the box.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
I'll open the box, and I'll set them by my
night standing in the bedroom, so they're all in there.
So I'm down to one pack left the two that
they come and packs the two and they're not huge, right,
but oh do I love them? So I would say
those for sure? Next, all right, song currently stuck in
(35:32):

by Adele. I love that I can listen to it
on repeat as I'm cleaning the house or.

shoes you wore this week. I don't know if I

smiling emoji.
Speaker 3 (36:14):

Speaker 2 (36:16):

out of the studio window, it is drizzly, but it's needed.
We need the rain here right now. Funniest thing you
saw on social media this week?
