Speaker 1 (00:13):
Show.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Welcome once again to the one, the only, the fan Show.
I am your host is always the team man, Richard Teman,
and this is episode five hundred and one, officially celebrating
ten long years of your favorite center for all things
football and nonsense.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
The man in the other box.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I haven't seen him in a while because he plays
for that team in that league that we don't talk
about because they blocked me on Facebook.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
It is Father Malk Malcolm McCoy. Welcome man. How you've been.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Man, I've been good, rich been good man.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
I can't laugh, man, I've been missing recording these episodes. Brother,
It's become like a weekly routine for me. Once we
were hitting it hard a few months back. But yeah,
those first few weeks and that not being able to
see you and record and everything, it was like withdrawals.
I just felt like I should be an old camera.
They almost started the only Fans. I was like, oh my,
oh jeez, but no, I've been good, brother. Everything is everything.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
It has been sometime.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I mean we talked five hundred and we did the
Hall of Fame announcement and that was good, but you know,
sorry spoiler alert, we did not cover the indoor Football
League this year for a few reasons. I mean, so
Malk went and played for a team which, before we
get too far into it, congratulations are in order, the
Beaumont Renegades.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I will speak of the devil. Really the devil.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
It's the league that is relegades champions man, and the
way that you did it, all the way that you
did it.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Tell me how sweet that was.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
I gotta hear it, man, So it couldn't get each
with it, honestly. Uh, you know, just let me take
you back a little bit. You know, it's being an
expansion team, you know, the first our actual first inaugural
season being this past season. It was a lot of doubt,
you know, coming from the outside. But you know, once
(02:31):
I spent some time with those guys in camp and stuff,
we knew what we had internally, so we were like, yeah,
this this is something special. We could go pretty far
with this. By no means that I expect to win
the championship the very first season, but you know, I
knew we'd make some noise and uh, you know, to
go pretty far in the season, but you know, making
it there and playing omall the team I started with,
(02:54):
the team I met Rich playing for you know, Uh,
it was just it was was surreal, man, it was
definitely surreal. I mean, it's a lot of things you
can say about Omaha. You know, you ask one hundred people,
you'll get a hundred different assets. I'll try to keep
it as clean as possible. I've had a great time
playing in Omaha. There are some people who are a
(03:18):
little less than less than reputable I'll say.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
But you know, for the.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Guys who I did see over there who still played
on the team, you know, Chris Perry, Trey Dudley, Giles,
the defensive coordinator, Adam Loft.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
This, it was really good to see those guys.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
They had nothing but good things to say and you know,
well wishes even after the game. So it was it
was a good one man. I couldn't have, you know,
drew it up any better.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, And Malcolm and I would check in with each other,
you know, throughout the season. Obviously I'm trying to keep
up with him when I wasn't sending him Josh Johnson videos,
who's freaking hilarious, man, Like he just came across my
Facebook one day and I'm like, MALC would appreciate this, dude,
Like four reels I've said, and that are just hilarious.
(04:03):
I love to interview him. But anyway, so Josh Johnson
check him out. So that the first time that Malk
hits me up after they beat Omaha, the first time,
he's just like somebody tried.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
To recruit me. I guess.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Oh yeah, And I was like really, and you know,
I said, I would have told him, hey, save your money.
You're probably gonna need it to bail somebody out of
jail at some point during the season.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
So but obviously it worked out for the best.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
I am a little upset you and I should be
getting fitted for a ring together. You you hit me
up before the season started saying they didn't have a
me and every team needs a me. Really the ones
that don't it shows. But I never did hear. And
that's okay, I get it, you know, at the level
that it is. I don't have very high expectations, but
(04:54):
I should have. I should, like I said, I should
be getting fitted for a second ring, not a guy
who asked my wife for feet picks, who I won't mention.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
But that's not right. Dude like that.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Dude should not be getting to rest. So when I
told her that she's like ew. They said, yeah, I'm sorry, honey,
but no, you and your brother winning a ring. I
guess I'll ask which which one was better? The one
with me obviously or the one with your brother. I
feel like I know the answer, so I'll just ask anyway.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Hey, look, like you said, Rich, every team needs you,
and it shows drastically when we don't have man really
like for real, man, it would have that would have
been just the cherry on top of everything. You know,
it felt like we had everything. They're not everything in
terms of like the facilities and everything because you know,
still Spanish team, still a lot of.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Climbing to do.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
But uh, one thing that one dream I've had outside
of playing pro ball is playing alongside my brother.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
You know, we try to do it in Duke City.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
That didn't work out how we planned it, So this
was like two point oh if you will, and to
actually go out there, play with him and actually go
all the way and win a ring. Man, It's it's
beyond words and describal. But like I said, with you, you
were the closest thing I had to a brother out there,
So I mean, you know, it's it's hard to compare
(06:18):
it to man, it really is, man, I it was.
It was crazy too because that was my rookie season, so,
you know, a great way to start kick off my
pro career. But I mean, i'm gonna say I'm gonna
say that neck and neck, man, just to just to
you know what I'm saying, keep from having to rack
my brain and try to try to find the pros
and cons.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
It was like they're they're very comfortable for real.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Oh this pucker up, kiss ass moments brought to you
by Chapstick if you can catch that already from from
malk right there.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Oh, man, I love you. I miss you.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
So Malc was busy winning the championship, which was part
of the reason why you know, I didn't want to
go and hunt down another co host, and then I
got busy, I mean in all the best ways. So
the new series Stars of Big Sky Country. I set
out to get five sponsors. The first episode, I think
I only had three, but I ended the series for
(07:12):
the first season with seven sponsors. I had to create
two spots extra because people around here just wanted to
be a part of it that much, and it's like
it's hard to turn down people that are willing to
pay for your talents and for something that they believe in,
and so it was just a very kind of, you know,
reassuring moment here. But the fan show has been busy
(07:36):
as hell. They love me here in Montana. We just
kind of capped off twenty twenty five officially last night
at the annual Shrine Game, and I was counting. I
had like some forty three new followers since the game
ended last night at like nine o'clock on Instagram.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
So social has been good.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
All that, But I mean, really, it's the IFL decided
to roll out the network and charge you to watch
these games that you previously got for free. Which I've
got a whole thing in my notes about the IFL
network and everything, but I was like, I just I
can't bring myself to do it. The season has been
so entertaining. I haven't watched a single game though. I've
(08:16):
just been keeping up with people and what's been going on.
Quad City has been doing great. In fact, somehow I
have become like their agent of win or loss, not
even kidding you. I got a new hoodie from Destiny
and I've worn it or the Quad City T shirt,
which is a dry fit under my suit if I
(08:39):
go to NHRL and every time I wear it, they win,
and I wanted to test it, so I didn't wear
it one week and they lost. It was their first
loss of the season. Then I tried to even get
tricky about it. I didn't wear it for the first
half of the game and they were losing, so I
put it on second half. They still lost. It's like, ah,
like it's got to be all in or nothing. Well,
last night I was at the Shrine game and they
(09:00):
were playing, and I wore my fan show shirt because
that's you know, I got to have the brand out there.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And what happened. They lost.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
So I can't not wear Quad City apparel on game
day or else they lose.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
And so what.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Started is me being the jinx for them last year
in our pickum, I have to apparently rep QC on
game day in order for them to win.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
It's the craziest turn of events.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
The Rattlers got beat by Tucson twice. Oh how sweet
it is, which means Billy Back will probably get fired
at the end of the season because you can't do that,
can't You can't beat the owner's team there, So let's
see what else has been going on. Fisher has been
doing great. They just got another win. They started off
to and Ozero and then lost a lot, but they
(09:47):
got to win last night. But what I love is
the turnout. It's so funny to me to see the
IFL force some of these markets like Bay Area, San Diego, Frisco,
and then it's the Fisher's Freight.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Uh, it's the Quad City.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Steam Wheelers and the Iowa Barnstormers that have you know,
and Green Bay Blizzard that have you know, routinely and
consistently good turnouts, Tulsa Oilers, you know, all of those
markets that you wouldn't think to try to put a
team in have worked. And uh, you know, I still
love Bay Area and and the strike force in San Diego,
but you the attendance is not good. So it's uh,
(10:26):
that's the beauty of indoor football. It's that it's not
what you expect. So anyway, yeah, the big thing for
me on my end, while Malcolm is out playing and
winning the championship, I got hired by the National Havoc
Robot League to be their commentator and pit reporter. One
of their commentators and their pit reporters So here's here's
(10:48):
how crazy it is. In the last six months, I
sold out of sponsorship spots for the series that I created.
I had to go out and be salesmen and marketer.
And then I have been hired by this league of
Combat Robots that will fly me out there to Connecticut, Okay,
(11:08):
across the country from Montana. They will put me up
in a hotel and then they pay me to call
robot fights. And they just locked me down for a
two year contract to do this. So all that happened,
and I left Omaha because it was too much to
ask for a rais to do media, and I got
(11:29):
turned down for wanting to be involved in sales and
marketing because I lacked experience, while the guy they had
for that would oversell under deliver and you had to
keep adding money to his commissary while he was in prison.
So it's just like I never had to be bailed
out of jail during a season. I just want to
(11:51):
say that right now. So I'm pretty sure I would
have been worth the rays. But the NHRL man that
has just been so good, I mean, it's not what
I expected. I definitely didn't have it on my twenty
twenty five Bingo card. But it's been years in the
making because there's several people that compete in it that
were from battle Bots that have mentioned me to them
(12:13):
as like, hey, this is somebody you should really consider
bringing in. And they're at a point where they keep
reinvesting in their product, which is what you need to do.
You can't just be content and settle and expect it
to get better on its own.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
It's not how it works.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
So Talent was next on their list, and I'm listed
literally as talent. The production team is top notch, the
facility is fantastic. I can't say enough great things about
the NHRL. So yes, that's why I've been busy. You know,
we work with a person who is also employed for
(12:51):
ESPN Plus, and just the production meetings that we have,
it's just like, my god, like if this could have
been me at Sioux Falls or Omaha, or if this
could be the IFL, like the things that they could achieve,
but no, it's.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Just getting away too much.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
So that's been really good. That's why I've been busy.
So congrats to malk on his championship. You know, another
one DJ Khaled style there. But yeah, I've missed it.
But also I don't feel bad because the way that
you and I ended last season at the championship game
and doing everything, it felt like a send off and
(13:32):
kind of farewell tour that I didn't get previously because
it was I got hired to come up to Montana
and so it was very abrupt. And so you know,
the Undertaker talks all the time about how his last
match quote unquote was the COVID year when they didn't
have people in the audience. But then when he got
(13:52):
to do a run in during a match at one
of the other WrestleMania's like two years ago, in a
huge crowd pop, He's like, Okay, now I feel like
I'm I'm actually done. Like I got to get one
more pop from the crowd and now I can go
Like That's kind of how last season felt for me.
And I'm not saying I'm done forever, but the league
had eight years to bring me on in some capacity
and they just didn't do it. So you know, I mean,
(14:15):
it is what it is, Malk, Like, what else are
you going to do?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
No?
Speaker 4 (14:18):
For real, mean, I totally understand always my advocate, even
in football especially, but just any any profession, you know,
go where where you're appreciated, you know, and at the
risk of sound and super cliche.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
You know, I'm happy for you because.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
You know, where you're not really valued in one place,
you're well when one door closes, several more open. And
that couldn't be, that couldn't ring more true in any
instance except your case.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
You know, it's I'm happy for you, super happy for you.
I mean, I help you.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Know that I didn't.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
I wasn't even aware of this entirely until no, but
I mean, you know, it is this super cool to
see that, you know, at one point it was kind
of shaky and uncertain, and you know you had every
right to be upset about it. I was upset for
you because, especially with the Omaha situation, I'm like, what
the fuck y'all thinking, Well, you know, to see.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
That you're in a situation that several.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Times better now, it's just as a music in my ears, brother,
I mean, I.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Love to hear it.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Yeah, So it's been it's been a good year.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
I do miss it.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
I'm glad that Quad City is doing so well, and
you know, it's been an otherwise good season. Hat Boilers
TJ went down last night, So my thoughts are with
the guys. But yeah, Pat sent me this guy and
I talked with him a little bit last night.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Hey what happened.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
He's like, yeah, TJ went down, so hopefully speedy recovery
for him. But Tulsa is doing good. You know, all
the teams that I like are doing well.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
So that's nice.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
But man, so I've got this full sheet here of
all this stuff that we could talk about. So I guess, like,
you know, is there anything that you had on your
mind that you wanted to discuss and we can start
there and see what all we get through, because I
there's a few things that I thought would be fun
to talk about, but we'll see what malk wants to discuss.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
I mean I might. I might just leave it to
your discretion, brother.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
I mean I kind of hopped on when you when
you shot me the text saying that you were ready
to shoot.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
I was like, hey, let's let's let's hear it.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Man.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
I'm all.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
I mean, I've I've seen quite a bit in just
in the last few months, but it's all Botmont stuff.
And I mean, I don't want to bore you guys
with the with just what's going on there?
Speaker 1 (16:37):
You know.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
No, let's let's let's hear what you got, Rich.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
I love to speak on with your the topics you
have playing well.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
So, like I said, one of the things that kind
of was the final nail for whether or not I
was going to do any kind of IFL coverage was
the network.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Man.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Uh So I found out teams got notified maybe two
weeks ahead of time that there was going to be
this network, and they were going to have to change
the way that they do stats, and so they're trying
to figure this thing out on the fly. So not
only are they going to charge fans to now watch
something that they previously had gotten for free for several years,
(17:17):
but the rollout was just terrible. I mean, it was
a god awful rollout because they started out saying, Okay,
we've got the network, and then they let the teams
know and then they have to make all these changes,
and then they're like, okay, it's going to be this much.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
Oh but you get this.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
Like after the first week they're like, oh, but you
get this, and then the next week they're like, oh,
and you can do this now. Like so it was
piece by piece and it was just a terrible rollout.
And I remember telling somebody, I said, this is the
thing that you do after a twenty twenty because you're
trying to get back money that you're not going to
because you had you didn't have a season, right, so
(17:55):
fans would be a bit more likely to kind of
appease you in that and be like, okay, like we
get it. You know things are changing, there's a network now, okay,
and you guys didn't have a season, so yeah, this
sounds like a good idea, but it's you know, twenty
twenty five, and that's obviously not the case. You're just
trying to do this. And the streaming I was told
(18:16):
still it didn't fix those problems. So I'm not sure
what the deal was there. But the biggest surprise for
me was to hear you know, so go to the
comment section because I knew that was where the entertainment
was going to be. And it's just comment after comment
after comment of fans being like, you know, on the
here's the network link, and fans being like, go kick Rock,
(18:39):
except I say, kick Rocks, We're PG thirteen, We get
one f bom. I'm gonna save it for a good time.
But you know, they were saying, go kick Rocks. And
the owner for Green Bay who kind of blew us
off at the championship game last year when I went
to introduce myself, she goes, well, there's other leagues that
you can watch for free. And it's just like, how
do you say that to your fans when it's your
(19:02):
fan base, Quad Cities fan base, Iowa's fan base, that
this affects them because they are blue collar workers who
like they're gonna be season ticket holders whether you win
every game or lose every single game, and you're telling
them tough basically like wow, like that was balls in
(19:22):
my opinion. And then Arena Football statement, who the previous
season said, hey, the league works so hard for you
guys to be able to enjoy these games for free,
like let's cut them a little slack on the streaming quality,
was now saying well, if you just don't go to
Starbucks for like, you know, a week, then then you
(19:44):
can afford it. And I'm like, these people don't drink Starbucks, dude, Like,
I don't know how out of touch you are with
the fan bases around the league, but the people that
this affects the most are not going to Starbucks. They're
going to the local coffee shops because they believe in
supporting local, which is why they're season ticket hold there's
in the first place.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Man.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
So yeah, the network was just I don't know, Like
I said, it was a terrible rollout. Fans were not happy,
but I guess that the league is just trying to
do its thing. Players still only make two fifty, so
I don't know where all this extra money is going.
But they're going to wrap up the season and it
(20:26):
will be whatever it is. I don't know what you
would grade the season, but yeah, that network was just
not a good thing. Speaking of Arena football statement, he went,
and I get notifications of all the from people posting
in all the different groups I'm in for indoor football,
and I try to just mute them because a lot
of time it's just like this rumor, or this rumor,
(20:48):
or this rumor. It's like I don't care because you're
probably not right. So I guess he was doing IFL
quick hits and he made this post about a lack
of content for him personally because he was so busy,
like between work and doing this and it's just like, dude,
like I don't even care to hear it. Like I've
been there, I've done that, Like I've worked, you know,
the seven am job, gotten home at like three or four,
(21:11):
and then had to turn top plays and whatever else,
and I wouldn't be in bed until like three in
the morning and have to do it all over again,
Like it's I don't care. And one of the things
that really kind of caught me was when he said
that his wife and his family don't understand. And it's
just like that's a red flag for me because if Danja,
(21:31):
my wife didn't understand, that would be a problem for me.
Like she's my biggest support system, Like she whether I
get paid to do it or not. And I guess
he was actually getting paid for this. I wasn't, so
so she supports me no matter what, which has been
kind of make or break. In fact, a quick story.
I went on a fishing trip with a buddy of
(21:53):
mine from high school who's now a guide, but you know,
back then he was just kind of getting finding his
footing for his you know, what do I want to
do with this? He had a brand, very good fisherman,
could always find the fish. We had a great weekend
and his wife at the time is now ex wife
for obvious reasons. I told him one time, you are
not as good as you think you are, because he
(22:14):
was trying to juggle his day job and his passion project.
And I was like, dude, like that's brutal. So they
ended up getting divorced. His wife now could not be
a bigger supporter of him, so much so that she
got involved in the business, started handling some of the
behind the camera, some in front of the camera stuff.
And now he just got headhunted to be part of
(22:37):
one of the biggest guide services in Cascade, Idaho. That's
what it's about, dude, Like, if you don't have the
right support system in place, you're dead in the water.
And so when he said that, you know, in this
lengthy post, I was just like, dude, like, I don't
know what to tell you. That's the red flag for
me though, but you know, and then I I guess
(23:00):
he had to stop doing quick hits, and I was like,
I never stopped midway through a season when I was
doing stuff, like I just grinned and bared it and
got through it.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
So everybody's different.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
But then at the beginning of the season, you know,
when people were starting to figure out that I wasn't
going to cover ifl.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Inside the Arena posted that the.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Columbus Lions were the greatest team in indoor football, not
not just their league, but in indoor football, because they
were undefeated in the way in which they had won.
And I remember posting, you know, sharing that and saying,
this is the media that you get when I'm not around,
Because then then Columbus went and lost like the next
week and got embarrassed, and I was just like, how
(23:46):
is it that this is what we're left with? And
I try not to be super pessimistic and hyper critical
of the other media outlets out there, but I just
don't understand, like how there's not any improvement from your
tea however, And you'll like this, Okay, I'm going to
dish out a compliment right now. I am actually going
to praise a media outlet because in my absence, they
(24:10):
have actually made me feel not terrible about not being
involved in indoor an arena football. And that's Trey off
the Walls Man.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
You were a guest. I'll allow it. It's done now.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
But Trey doesn't focus on the gossip, which I appreciate
He's always trying to do more, do better, which is like,
that's what this kind of media is all about, is
doing more, doing better. You know, what kind of content
can I create next? Because I don't believe that consistency
is key in the media world. There's too many trends
(24:46):
that are happening, you know, and there's too much that's
changing year to year that to try to be consistent
is like trying to stay on AM radio. It's just
you know, it'll always be there, sure, but if you
want to keep up and stay relevant in the world,
you have to keep doing the things that are trending
or finding new ways to do things that other people
(25:06):
haven't thought of. And he's been doing that and he's
been great at it. I don't think he should focus
so much on like every single league and every single team,
because I think the AF one is kind of a.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Waste of time.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Obviously, my thoughts on the NL are no secret, So
I would just focus on one and just be the
best at that one that you can be. Like, that's
kind of what made the Fans Show different from everybody
else was I wasn't trying to cover seventeen different leagues
of these teams that were just gonna fold after a month,
or leagues that were gonna have a championship with two
(25:44):
teams that were the only two teams left in the league.
I mean before mid season, the NAL was already in
mid season form because they had teams fold. And it's
just like, if that doesn't scream NAL, I don't know
what does. But Trey has done a really good job, so.
Speaker 1 (25:59):
I hope he keeps doing it.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
And the content that he's created is good. So I
feel better knowing that he is out there and off
the wall is doing you know stuff, I guess in
my absence. I'm not going to say that they're trying
to be the new Me or whatever. I hope he's
the first.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
Tray, you know.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
In other words, but you you talked to him, you
had a good interview, Like, what was your takeaway after
a year of doing stuff with me when you got
to talk to Trey?
Speaker 3 (26:25):
Yeah? Yeah, no trade, Great dude, man, great dude, for real.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
I was kind of eager to see who you would say,
and you said you were giving somebody praise, you know
what I mean For those of y'all who don't know,
it takes a lot to impress Bridge. He's not a
hater by any means, but if he's giving you praise,
you really got to be on your shit, you know,
but trade outside of yourself. He's one of those guys
who actually you can tell he studies the game. You know,
he's not just watching for highlights or watching to talk
(26:51):
about all the big sign in order the big release
or anything like that. He's looking for like he's watching
the games actually diagnosing what's going on. And he's he's
answering and those questions that people want to hear, and
like talking about the stuff that people actually want to hear,
true football fans want to hear. And you know, I mean,
(27:12):
I couldn't be more more proud and happy.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
What he's doing.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
You know, Like you said, I talked to him into
that stretch of like what we called our bad month.
You know, it was just this week after week, I
think it was like four straight weeks we didn't have
a game, and uh, you know I talked to him
like right on the tail end of that, just you know,
chop it up a little bit. He was just he's
(27:35):
just a he's a he's a player's a players guy.
You know, he's not trying to, you know, talk you
into saying something you don't you shouldn't have said, or
try to, you know, get the next big story like
I said before. But uh, he's he's a good dude,
and I definitely love what he's doing. I hope he
continues to grow and do it even more.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, and I agree, I do think he's a bit
too chummy with some of the other media outlets out there.
I'm not saying that you have to be me and
be hyper critical of them, but it's just like, you know,
after I had been covering the league for so long
and people requesting me to come to their games or
to talk about this or to be on the show,
Like I have a specific standard that I always tried
(28:17):
to hit every time. If I'm going to sign off
on it, it's going to be this good or it's
not going to be anything at all. And so when
I see, like like I mentioned, these other platforms that
come out that try or they do and they're just
missing the mark, it just drives me nuts because it's like,
I don't know how I could get it after the
first few years and then build and after so many
(28:39):
you haven't been able to even move your own needle.
But there was another page that shared something in a
group that said that the Washington wolf Pack we're getting
too much hate for teaming up with Benizio for their
streaming services, and they're like, it's a lot of hate
for you know, a team that's trying to do the
right thing.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
It's not the right thing, but anyway.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
So I think Trey focuses definitely less on the gossip side,
which is such a breath of fresh air because rumors
anybody can do rumors, man, Like, it's there's there's rumors
popping up in the groups every single day from people
that say they have credible sources and they don't. But
(29:22):
you know, for him to not focus on rumors and
to actually focus on the stuff that people give a
shit about, that's what I really appreciate about Trey. So
so again, I think he spreads himself a little too
thin with all the leagues he tries to cover, and
he's a little bit too chummy with some of the
other outlets. But no, I mean, he'll he'll have a
moment where he'll get, you know, probably pissed at somebody,
and then and then he'll he'll start you know, down
(29:44):
the path towards being like me. Not that it's the
dark side, but you know, it's it flirts with it,
definitely for sure. But he just hasn't he just hasn't been,
you know, blemished by anything yet.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
So it's it's only it's only a matter of.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
Time, been bound to happen in this industry.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
So that's you know, as far as my takeaways from
the season and just kind of my absence and being
more on the outside looking in. But I did want
to kind of do something fun when you and I
finally got together to talk about everything, and that was
It has been five years since Todd Tryon became commissioner
(30:27):
of the Indoor Football League, and I was going to
give him a grade based on what I've seen for
those first five years as commissioner. What do you think
the grade? What do you think I graded him? Like,
I just had to look at.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
But knowing you rich, like I said before, it's hard
to impress you with like pretty much anything. I know, like,
just based on the conversations we've had, you had a
lot of suggestions on how he can improve viewership and
prove there is like the media coverage a whole lot
of stuff. So I'm gonna say, if we're on like
(31:07):
a letter scale, I would say you probably grated like
a C minus across all five years. That's generous.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
How good does Malcolm know? Me?
Speaker 2 (31:21):
I gave him a C no plus or minus, a
solid C grade. And you know, before I did this,
I talked to people about it. I said, hey, I'm
thinking about doing something fun giving try on a grade
for his first five years, Like what do you think?
And some people were just like F plus and I
was like, okay, okay, let's let's dial it back. I'm sorry,
you're a super fall Storm fan. I get it, like
(31:43):
you don't have a team anymore, but you know, let's
be realistic.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
And so we started to break it down.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
You know, one of the best seasons that I ever
witnessed was when the league had the fewest amount of teams.
I think it's ever had six teams. IOWA won their
first ever championship. I was there for that game. It
was against the Siux fall Storm. You couldn't have scripted
it any better than how that whole thing played out.
And so some people are like six teams, like is
that even the league? It was still one of the
(32:09):
best seasons ever and that was one of the last
under Mike All's house. One of the biggest components for
change that the IFL has tried to push as far
as an agenda has been expansion. A lot of it
was failing, and so enter you know, I think Kevin
Guy's part of the head of the committee for expansion,
and then you have try on the commissioner. They enter
(32:30):
the fold, and now the league starts to just kind
of take off with these team announcements. However, however, I
will point out that I had a memory pop up
in my Facebook last week that said the ifl's goal
for next year, and I think this was right after
(32:50):
his first full year, was to have twenty teams, which
was double the amount that they had that year. So
they were going to go from ten to twenty teams
coast to coast. And I was like, that's too much.
That's way too much, like in that amount of time,
like to just in a year's time, all of a sudden,
you're gonna add double the teams to your league, Like
you're crazy. So I said twenty was a dangerous number.
(33:13):
Turns out sixteen or even fifteen was a dangerous number
because under Tryon's tenure or commissionership, the league has not
been able to expand beyond fourteen teams.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
And I mean you.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Could put an asterisk next to a team like the
Columbus wild Dogs, a team that never was because they
rolled everything out, they had a logo, they had the announcement,
and then it.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Was delay after delay after delay.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
But I mean, realistically, there's been a lot of turnover
since he took over. Expansion hasn't been the problem. Like
finding new markets hasn't been a problem. It's been maintaining
those markets that has been So if you put an
asterisk by Columbus or you don't even count it, whichever
you want, then you have Duke City, which I know
(34:05):
technically dormant, right, but to my knowledge, Quad City has
been the only team ever to go dormant and come
back from it. So I guess we'll see. So Duke
City sue falls. How does that happen? Like, bro, that's
your old team, like how And I'm not going to
say they had it coming, but that ownership group had
(34:25):
it come. Sorry, Sorry, Cedar Rapids, Okay, Frisco, I mean, okay, Bismarck.
And then spoke hand And here's here's where it gets
really funny, is that All's House who was the commissioner
before try On, he had such things as the Fanchise
(34:49):
ran Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles debacle, which was the
fans could vote for the plays and the players had
their Twitter handles on the jerseys instead of their last names,
like it was a circus, right, So he had to
go through that, and then he also had to go
through the debacle of the West Michigan ironman Bloomington Edge,
(35:10):
who tried to leave the CIF to come play for
the IFL and then the CIF said nope, and they
never got to play. So but under Tryon he had
the Louisville Extreme got shut down halfway through the season,
and the Sam Adams Spokane Shock debacle. Oh my goodness,
that Spokane Shock situation such a nightmare. I think there's
(35:34):
still fans that are trying to get refunds from season
tickets they bought for a season that never happened.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
So they both.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
I mean, the scales kinda there, they're a little even there.
But man, that was a black eye for sure under
his tenure. But like I said, the league has been
able to expand just fine, finding markets like Northern Arizona, Tucson, Barria, Tulsa, Vegas,
San Antonio. But I do have kind of an asterisk
(36:00):
next to the Masses, the Jacksonville's, the Duke Cities, and
the San Antonios of the league because those were already
well established teams that the IFL brought over from other leagues.
So I mean, how well did those really count? But anyway,
I guess the moral of the story is is that
you know, it's a coast to coast league, now, sure,
(36:21):
but they expanded to Columbus, to Duke City, to Frisco,
to Bismarck, to Spokane, to Louisville, but yet lost all
of those teams, And even if you don't count Columbus,
they also lost Sioux Falls, which was a well established team,
and Cedar Rapids. So it's not expansion that's the problem,
(36:44):
it's maintaining it, which fourteen apparently is just the lucky number.
I mean, the league has been able to expand to
twelve new markets, sixteen if you count San Antonio, Mass, Jacksonville,
Duke City, which okay, dormant or not doesn't make a
huge difference. So that's still a ridiculous number. But in
(37:04):
that time they've still had one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven eight teams full, so that's half of them and
some of them, yes, are not the expansion teams that
they had because there was Sioux Falls and Cedar Rapids,
but they established Frisco, lost Frisco, established, Spokane lost Spokane,
Louisville lost Louisville, Columbus never happened, brought over Duke City.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Duke City's gone. So like, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
If that's really the progress that the League was looking for.
But if he was to step down as commissioner, his
legacy would literally be a logo.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Change in my mind, because that's it.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
The network rollout was terrible, The expansion efforts have been subpar.
You lost three franchises that had you know, storied history
Duke City, I guess maybe, but somehow you lost the
suit Fall Storm and then you know, Spoken and that
whole thing and how that played out and then it
(38:08):
was just a complete mess. So really the legacy of
him in his first five years is a new logo,
that's it.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
So that's my grade. Man, Like I don't I don't
know what else to say. That's I broke it down.
That's what I came up with.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
No, man, I can't disagree, Rich, I can't. You know,
I haven't looked at it that way.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
You know.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
But no matter how.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Much someone likes them or doesn't like them, you know,
ultimately you know, your your market is made bad results.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
You know.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
He set out for a pretty a pretty uh you know,
lofty goal and uh you know, I got to commend
the gap for for I guess shooting for it. But
you know, like I said, if the results don't show,
and you know, it's not much of a change the
last ownership or the last commissioner. You know, it's it's
(39:04):
not it's hard to kind of say he's doing great,
you know. But at the same time, like you said,
it just hint anybody your grade.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
It's hard.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
He's not doing terrible, but it's not enough to be
out anything.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
You want a championship in another league. You can be
honest right now.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
Oh man, I have to agree with you. It's definitely
it's definitely a sub par performance. Sure, I don't think
anybody would, uh you know, throw him in the commissioner
Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
There was one, you know, so ironically he is in
the IFL Hall of Fame, but it's from his time
as an owner. Oh yeah, but you know, I try
to be you know, very much like, Okay, I see
the good, I see the bad. Here's here's where I
think that the bad was worse than the good was good.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
And stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
And like I said, you know, there's been efforts and
people can probably slide in the comments and say, well,
he's not in charge of expansion. But okay, even if
he's not technically like it's an expansion committee that he's on,
but there's like the head of expansion, which isn't him,
or like however that works. You know, who do you
send your complaints to? Who do they say hit up
(40:18):
when you want change in that league? It's at commissioner,
you know, at or commissioner at IFL dot com or
whatever the hell it is. So he does have a
certain degree of responsibility there and to do with it.
So kind of a one step forward, two steps back
kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
So I don't know what the future holds for the IFL.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
This year just felt like there was a lot more
focus on stuff that wasn't the game that hasn't been
the teams or whatnot. And that's going to happen when
you have teams that struggle to start the season that
were really good last year, like I think Bay Area
and the Strikeforce didn't start off very good. Their attendance
was not great, which we mentioned earlier, but you know,
props to Fishers for doing their part and the rollout
(41:02):
for their expansion team and packing the place, and Tulsa
for always having good attendance, and Quad City for always
having good attendances. Like these Midwest teams, these aren't the
markets that you dream of, but they're the markets that
your product is most effective in. And I think that's
just the lesson they need to learn is that, yes,
he has technically established a coast to coast league from
(41:25):
southern California to Boston, Massachusetts, and no one can take
that away from him. But it's just like, how well
are those teams doing attendance wise? You know, Mass's attendance
hasn't been very good and they were in the championship
last year. So I think there's gonna be hopefully some
thinking this offseason for him.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
But I don't know when I'll be.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
Back to talking about ifl other than right now, things
are popping in in Montana.
Speaker 1 (41:54):
We gotta get you out here, dude.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
These kids would probably love to hear from a two
time champion as far as technique and fundamentals. I mean,
you're great with kids, you know that.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
Oh yeah, moutload of kids. You know, just say the
word man, I'll pop out. There's no issue. Man, I've
been looking for a reason to take a little vaca,
so I mean, and what better reason to do it
than for the kids, you know?
Speaker 3 (42:20):
So I mean, yeah, we can make that happen.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Malk in the woods Mouth, malcol A stream, Malk with
a bear?
Speaker 1 (42:32):
Are you giving me all?
Speaker 4 (42:32):
These? Are all these all Instagram caps ideas. I'm thinking
once I get out there, I have a field days.
It'll be like a photo shoot.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I loved when I was going to the gym and
I was calling Malcolm out on social media because he
was doing these you know top you know my face
if I had one workout to choose from or my
top five, And then I didn't see him for a while,
and I was like, Okay, so I started going to
the gym and now I'm not anymore. Uh okay, full disclosure.
(43:02):
My biggest issue with any gym is when I have
to pay. And by that, what I mean is is that, look,
I'm not some tenured gym guy like I. I don't
know you know, all the ins and outs of it.
I know that some people have said it's the most
difficult and complicated subscription contract whatever to get out of
(43:23):
if you need to, Like I heard horror stories. So
I signed up for the local gym here and I
went very consistently for that for that first month. And
so then the next month I was gone, like it
was March, and I was gone I think three weekends
out of the month, and so I just didn't have
the time to go, and so had I told them,
(43:43):
I said, hey, if you look, you'll see I didn't.
I didn't come here at all, Like I wasn't. I
couldn't physically like be and they're like, oh, yeah, we
see that. I was like, so if I could just
like skip that month and just I'll pay for this
next one and then we'll just keep going. And they're like, oh, well,
I don't really know if it like works like that,
but we'll ask. And the lady that called me could
not have been more unwilling to help me. And I
(44:05):
was just like, look, I'm new to this, and all
I'm asking for is is just like, you know, a
pass for this one because I wasn't here and we'll.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
Just pick up now.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
She's like, yeah, no, that's not how it works, and
I'm just like okay, Like all right. So then I
canceled my membership and I was just like because she
was talking about how you know, well, if you know
your cell phone's a subscription that no matter how much
you use or don't use it, I was like, okay,
but that's your phone, Like come on, like be real here,
you're your Netflix of the I want to cancel you
(44:38):
for a month, I can and come right back, or
get a different email and get a free trial. Like
you're trying to put yourself in a world that you
don't belong right now. So that's my biggest issue with
the gym is when I have to pay to be
But I'm glad that you were able to stay fit
and stay on top of things.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
No injuries. I think that was my biggest concern for you.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Brother, was something terrible season ending injury for you guys.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
Man, So, and the thing is that's always in the
back of your head as a football players athlete at all,
you know, but especially coming uh coming back to to
indoor ball after missing a full season because of the injury, you.
Speaker 1 (45:20):
Know, but.
Speaker 4 (45:22):
Not just I just uh, you know, a lot of
I trusted the work that I put it in an
off season to stay healthy. You know, some certain things
are just unavoidable. You know, freak accidents happen all the time.
But that was one of my main points of emphasis
leading up to this season, is I don't want to
be injured because of something that I'm not doing or
(45:43):
something that uh I'm neglect in the area that needs
to be worked on in order to keep me healthy.
So you know, thank god I did just that. And
there were you know, those little nix and bruises that
come with the sport, but outside of that, uh, the hell.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
Through and through.
Speaker 4 (46:01):
So you know, definitely, definitely that's that's even that makes
it even more of a great season.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
And so now he has the what he hopes is
the continued success of the Washington Commanders to look.
Speaker 1 (46:14):
Forward to in the fall.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
Oh yeah, I don't know, man, I don't know if
they could do it again.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
You guys.
Speaker 2 (46:22):
I always give teams crap for thinking a shiny new
quarterback is going to be the thing that completely turns
their franchise around it somehow the Washington Commanders got one
and Jade and Daniels.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
That clows my mind.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
So I'm excited for the next football season just to
see how everything pans out. As a Niners fan, all
you can do is hope, hope that guys stay one.
But man, it's been so good to catch up with you.
We got through everything I wanted to talk and laugh about,
(47:00):
but you. I wanted to make sure that I got
you on here and talk to you about your championship
and congratulate you because how sweet of the victory that
that fire head coach midway through the season, who's brought
you to back to back championships.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
You can't make it make sense, dude, What the fuck? Okay,
there it is.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
There's the F bomb. We needed perfectly time to things
midway through the season. When I when I heard that,
I was like, this is a rumor, like this is
somebody's trying to get clicks so bad right now. And
then I looked into it and I was like, you
gotta be what like really, midway you locked the semi
(47:46):
pro team and then you you win and and then.
Speaker 1 (47:53):
It made my head hurt. I was like, what is happening?
Speaker 2 (47:57):
So good for you, man, And you know, we don't
have any punishments to dish out right now, so that's good.
No punishments are owed. But yeah, ten years of the
Fan Show, we got an updated logo, got a little
bit new shine on it, got a new intro, so
I got Malcolm taking a pie to the face and
that news.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
That's all good.
Speaker 2 (48:17):
But man, it's been great to be on here in
an official fan show capacity episode five oh one.
Speaker 1 (48:23):
But we've got got.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
Interviews for the music division, for the robotics division, even
an event coming up for the wrestling division. So there
is a lot of fan show things happening, even if
it's not indoor football related. And the folks in Montana
have loved what the Fan Show has been doing. So
hope we can have a bigger and better year come August.
(48:45):
You know, got a lot of stuff in the works,
a lot of plans. But if we're going to end
the episode on something, how about some zen wisdom. What
I've got for you is, well, you know, Malcolm, you
go first, any any sort of quick tidbits, anything you
learned over the last season, or advice you want to
give to our viewers and listeners.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
See now, now you put me on the spot.
Speaker 4 (49:08):
Man, I always I'm always the game with those philosophical quotes,
those those huddle breaking quotes. You know, I'm gonna just
tell you one that I kind of live by this
entire season. It's just be where your feet are. It's
easy to stress about what's going to happen tomorrow, or
(49:28):
you know, regret and try to think of what you
could have done differently the previous day, but you know,
you owe it to yourself to just be where your
feet are, give your full attention to the present. That's
the best, the best advice I think I've heard, and
I've relayed this season.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
So okay, I.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
Told Malcolm this, and it's gonna be hard to beat that,
so I won't even try. I've told Malcolm this before,
and that is, if you ever do anything on TV
or in front of the camera, never eat an oreo
before you go live. There's there's no time, there's no time,
like you can't you can't do it, like if you
(50:06):
know you know so, don't eat an't oo before you
go on live on camera. And then please, this one
really hits close to home for me. I just I
just really want to get this one out there as
as meaningful as I can. If someone says, hey, can
I venmo you money to then send me.
Speaker 1 (50:23):
