Alla fine degli anni '40 si trasferisce a Milano dalla Bulgaria. Dopo la laurea in scienze politiche, Moni Ovadia comincia la sua attività come cantante e musicista folk con un repertorio di musiche balcaniche nel gruppo dell'«Almanacco popolare». Nel 1972 fonda il Gruppo Folk Internazionale, dedicandosi allo studio della musica tradizionale di vari paesi, in particolare dell'area balcanica. Nel 1978 il gruppo cambia struttura e diventa Ensemble Havadià. Nel 1990 fonda la TheaterOrchestra e inizia a lavorare stabilmente con il CRT Artificio di Milano. Moni Ovadia riceve numerosi riconoscimenti per la sua attività teatrale, tra cui il premio speciale Ubu nel 1996 per la sperimentazione su teatro e musica. Nel 2004 è direttore artistico del Mittelfest di Cividale del Friuli.
