"Welcome to The Grind: Cover 2 Cover – where we don’t just play the music, we open up the entire album experience. Each week, we dig deep in the crates and revisit the records that shaped R&B, soul, hip hop, and everything in between. We’re not just talking hits – we’re talking album credits, producer gems, and the stories behind the sound. From the liner notes to the sleeve design, we decode the visuals, the thank-you messages, the hidden skits, and the vision behind the artist's concept. If you’ve ever studied who mixed the track, who played the keys, or who’s that voice in the background – this is your place. It’s more than music. It’s the full experience. Cover to cover. Let’s drop the needle."

How you doing my grinders? DJ Retro here for another
episode of the Grind. This time it's cover to cover.
I want to bring back that nostalgia when you walk
into a record store select your CD, album, eight track

(01:29):
or tape. You're looking at it as you walk into
the counter. You just can't wait to either get to
your car if you have to see their tape, or
you get home and you actually get the plastic off
of it, pull the record out, put it on the platter,
lift the needle and drop it, and you start looking

(01:50):
at the inner liner and or the cover of that album,
and you start learning more about the artists, the producers,
the label, all of those things. That's what we're trying
to bring back here on the Grind Cover to cover.

(02:11):
Starting out with things. We have Pebbles, this is the
artist that came out in the late eighties early nineties. Okay,
I actually have her CD in my hand. We went
to the record store and we went digging into crates
and I had to pick this up. I had to

(02:31):
pick this up. You know her. She was the other
half the wife of La Reid HM. But we'll get
to that in a second. Pebble's real name was Perry
Arlette mckessick. She's from Oakland, California, born in August nineteen

(02:52):
sixty four. The self entitled album that I have in
my hand right now had a couple of hits that's
coming off here came off of here. First one was
first song on here was Girlfriend. Number two was two Hearts.

(03:13):
Third song on the song list whereas first Step in
the Right Direction number four, Take your Time. Number five
on the song list slip away. Number six, Oh yeah,
Mercedes Boy, come and take a right on, Mama and
Mama SDEs y'all remember that seven, Do Me Right? Eight

(03:38):
Love Hate. Number nine on the song list was baby Love.
In ten, give me your Love, Give me your Love.
Now while I'm talking to you, I'm opening this up
and you could probably hear me.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
Whoo.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
I love the liner, Man the liner. Let's figure out.
Let's let's look back here real quick. So this was
put out on MCA Records, Okay, nineteen eighty seven, which
is dope and I'm looking at it. Pretty classy picture
in the front of her on this album curly hair,
Big hair was big back then, but Pebbles pulled it off.

(04:14):
As I opened the sleeve, has a note in here
says girlfriend two hearts, first step in the right direction,
take your time, step away, Mercedes Boy, do me right,
Love Hate, Baby Love, give Me your Love, which is
on the left hand side of the sleeve, and then
on the right hand side. After the song lists, we

(04:34):
go into Pebble's producers, which I like, Man, look at this, Okay,
here we Go Girlfriend, produced by La Reid and Babyface
full oft Face Productions. The song take Your Time by
Charlie Wilson and Danny Simbello. Had no clue that Charlie

(04:56):
Wilson actually produced that song. All Right, Mercedes Boy, do
Me Right, Baby Love, Give Me Your Love all produced
by Charlie Wilson, Wow, First Step in the Right Direction
Slip Away. Both were produced by Danny Simbello and Alex Brown.

(05:17):
Love Hate by Andre Simone Production Assistant Jamie Newton, Two
Hearts produced by Paul Jackson Junior and Alex Brown. This
album was co produced by Pebbles Executive producer George L. Smith,
and Pebbles had some help as they listen hear musicians

(05:38):
on this album Babyface, Andre Simone, Paulina da Costa, Bruce Getch,
Kevin Grady, Gary Herbig, Kyo, Paul Jackson, Fred Jenkins, Roman Johnson,
Cornelius Memmes, l A Reed, The Cimbello, Billy Young and

(06:01):
Michael Simbello. So we see already some major players that
had a big part of this album, Babyface, La Reid,
Charlie Wilson, and the list goes on, Cool Cool Cuck coo.
As we open up the liner. We have the middle
park and this is what I like. This is what
I like getting to the like the songs. You know
what I'm saying. All Right, Let's see what we got

(06:25):
for background vocals. For background vocals, of course, Pebbles man Uh,
Danny Cimbello, Babyface, La Reid, Charelle, Charlie Wilson, Yvette Corvette Marine,
Jackie Smiley, Alex Brown, Lynn Davis, Marlena Jeter, Katrina Perkins,

(06:51):
Marva Barnes, Jessica Williams SAIDA Gary sung on this song.
Julia Waters and Carol Dennis sung background vocals on this album. Wow.
Recording engineers Jerry Brown, John Gas, Hilary Bakovia, Peter Kelsey,

(07:17):
Craig Burbridge, Bud Rizzo, Dave Riddall, Randy Waldman, Tavvy Mote,
Bobby Brooks. Second engineers John Payne, bud Rizzo, Rob von Are,
Lenney Vegas, John Hedges, Danny Simbello, Jeff lorenzen Her mixed

(07:43):
all songs by what Louis Silas, Junior engineer Tavvy Mote
and recorded at Studio Masters in Los Angeles, Studio d
Salsolito Larabee Sound Studio, West Hollywood, Galaxy Sound Studio in Hollywood.

(08:03):
So a lot of this album. This album was fully
produced in Cali Fantasy Studio, Berkeley, California, by Sonova Hotel,
San Fernando, Ground Control, Los Angeles, mad had Her Los Angeles,
Zebra Studio Studio City. Also recorded at Image Studio in

(08:29):
Los Angeles, Mankind Studio in Los Angeles, Music Grinder in
Los Angeles, and Yamaha R and D Studio in Glendale, California.
Mastered by Steve Hall at Futured Disc, Los Angeles. Now, okay,
so we got a couple of takeaways here. For one,

(08:50):
this is a big thing for me. I didn't know
Charlie Wilson had a big part in this album. Two
didn't know that Saieda Garrett and Charrelle sung background vocals
on this album as well. And not to say everybody
else is not and Carol Dennis is not to say
that everybody else is not important, but those are the

(09:10):
ones that stick out in my mind from this era
that really have done a lot in music. All Right,
before we get back to the sleeve, because this is
getting pretty juicy, there's a lot of stuff going on here. Okay,
so getting back to Perry or let Red made name
m Kasick got a couple of more stats for you.

(09:34):
Girlfriend came out in nineteen eighty seven, Mercedes Boy was
released in nineteen eighty eighty, singles Giving You the Benefit,
nineteen ninety Love Makes Things Love that song Love that
Makes Things Happen that was recorded with Babyface. And also,
if you remember, Pebbles was the manager for TLC. All right, Okay,

(10:00):
gonna lay that part alone because we're not gonna go
down that road. But you know she was the manager
for them. Signed with MCA Savvy. She also signed with Perspective,
and she had her own Pebbletone m Pebbletone Incorporated. And

(10:23):
she was married to La Reid and Otis Nixon. Okay,
she has her website. Sister Perry P E R R I.
Dot got Her started at age sixteen in nineteen eighty
as a background vocalist for the percussion percussionist band leader
Bill Summers and the funk band Confunction. Reid co wrote

(10:47):
one of Confunction's singles, Body Lovers. A local musician gave
Reed a production deal, which fell through several months later
when she became pregnant with her daughter, while working at
in Oakland, California, in the real estate office, she met
a contractor, George L. Smith, who she later married. Smith

(11:09):
bankrolled Pebbles with eighty thousand dollars for a demo tape
in the video for Mercedes Boy, and then that led
to the contract at MCA. Wow Reid's cousins and R
and B singer Charelle, who was featured along with Johnny
Gill on her nineteen ninety one hit song Always Meanwhile,

(11:31):
by the time she became by this time, she began
scoring her first solo success and that's dope wow wow. Okay, Okay,
let's get back to the sleeve because I like this here. Okay.
So we also noticed that this whole album was pretty
much recorded in Cali, up and down, California, mastered by

(11:54):
Steve Hall at FUTURISC Los Angeles, and Pebbles likes to
give her thanks. She likes to thank everybody at MCA Records,
Gerald Busby, Louis Silas Junior, Cheryl Dixon, Ernie Singleton, Elionza
Miller and her note after that's for being the best

(12:16):
Cruz and Michael Siambello, and she says thanks for being there.
Marvin Robinson, Nana. Without you, I would not exist in
love you jen A bug Ashley, Juliet mac Craig, Angela Veronica,
the Mackassick family, the Smith family. I love you all, Merle,

(12:40):
Zetra Matisse Charell for the inspiration and it puts here
quote see I told you we could do it. Love
because lots of love to my grandmother Andrea. So that's
her thanks there, and she gives a very special thanks
to George L. Smith. Never have I met anyone like you.

(13:02):
Love Pebs all right for her image, Okay, here we go.
Her rags by Lynn Bougay, her makeup at the time
Carme Tenuta. The cover concept was for cover by Bye Blaah,
I can't even talk tonight. The cover concept was by
Pebbles and Randy Saint Nichols and her photographer for this

(13:25):
photo shoot was Randy Saint Nichols for Pebbles Business. Her
management George L. Smith in association with Pacific Cow Management.
Production coordinator was Zetra Smith, Battist Huell Public Relations, Deborah
Baum Associates, and the attorney Jody E. Graham. All Right,

(13:49):
the appearances for this album, you know you got to
get permission. What people do when they show up on
your album. You know, labels want to make sure they
get their piece of the money too. So we'll go
down the list here as we're talking about it. But
Cheryl appears courtesy of Taboo CBS Associated Records, Babyface appears
courtesy of Sound of Los Angeles Records. Solar La Red

(14:13):
appears courtesy of Sounds of Los Angeles Records Incorporated. Ko
appears courtesy of Sound of Los Angeles Records. Charlie Wilson

(14:33):
through courtesy of Atlantic Recording Corporation. SAEEDA. Garrett appears courtesy
of Quest Records, Q West Records. Yes, Michael Simbelo appears
courtesy of A and M Records. And then of course,
uh Pebbles has her fan club. Wow, I remember back
then everybody had a fan club. It wasn't like he

(14:56):
had an IG page or a web page. You had
to actually write a letter, address it and put a
stamp on it. But I wonder if this still exists.
So if you want to write this particular po Box.
Let me know, so, Pebbles International Fan Club, you address
anything to po Box seven zero three four seven, send
it to Oakland, California nine four six one two Dash

(15:19):
zero three four seven, and she dedicated the album two.
I would like to dedicate this album in the memory
of Patrick Cephus, Chris Payne, Marty Will, George may Our
Hearts always be one and forever. Man. I love this sleeve.

(15:43):
You actually have to. You gotta go out and get
this if you're digging in the cratey self entitled album
from Pebbles. We already went down the song list here
and we'll give you a little bit more facts before
we wrap it up here on this podcast cover the
cover talking about Pebbles, just want to highlight that in

(16:04):
nineteen ninety seven, Pebbles underwent a religious conversion. Under her
new stage name Sister Perry, she founded Women of God
Changing Lives Ministries as an ordained minister. She now preaches
in ministers through song, and in two thousand and eight,
she was off for like thirteen years, re released her

(16:25):
fourth album and debut gospel album, Prophetic Flows Volume one
and two, which actually peaked at number twelve on Billboard's
Gospel Album Chart. That's dope, so cover to cover, Pebbles
learned a lot, didn't you. I learned a lot too.

(16:45):
