Speaker 1 (01:01):
Hello, Welcome to another episode of the Grind. I'm your host,
James Perrier, also known as DJ Retro. Most people call
me DJ Retro nineteen ninety because that is one of
the social media handles that I do go by. But
once again, thank you for another episode of the Grind.
And here this is where we have the opportunity to

(01:21):
revisit those times in hip hop that have really been
special to me, and I have the opportunity to share
some artists with you that were very influential and to
my hip hop growth. So first thing we're going to
do is when we start off the show today, we
just want to make sure that you know what's going

(01:41):
on in the Las Vegas Valley area. And it now
being December, Man, I can't believe we still have twenty
seven days, twenty seven days before January first comes upon
on us. Last year, we had the opportunity to bring

(02:04):
in the new year in DJ a huge, huge, and
I mean huge party now in the Lake Las Vegas area,
and we still have video of it, and I can
say that it looked like the aftermath, the aftermath of
the apocalypse. We had smoke machines, smoke going over everywhere,

(02:29):
bubble balloons, stuff just strewn all over the floor, glasses, bottles, trays,
food everywhere, and not that that is a bad thing,
it was just a packed house. So with that being said,
if you need a DJ to DJ any of your

(02:51):
holiday events right now, we have some inquiries, but to
book us, you can go to www. Dot thegrind dot online,
go to DJ retros page and give us a call.
Also six seven eight, six eight zero three four nine
four you can text us or call us and reach

(03:12):
us there on the business number. Now I say that
to say no spam costs, no spam texts. If you
send any spam text we will block you. So as
a courtesy, if you need something by all means, give
us a call. But if you're just advertising and sending

(03:33):
stuff over the airwaves thinking that we are going to
respond to any spam texts asking us to invest in
bitcoin or anything like that, no, So I'd appreciate that.
But to get this segment started, we do want to
go over what's going on in the Las Vegas area

(03:57):
since since the week of December first and the holidays
are upon us. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
We had a great Thanksgiving. We had the family come
in from out of town to visit us and spend time,
and we greatly appreciated it, and we also needed the
time off to reboot. This has been a year of rebuilding,

(04:22):
a year of revelation for us, and another year to
show us what direction that we're going in and verification
of the direction that we're going in with business is
good and not to mention. We're thankful for the health
of family and friends. EF It's going on this weekend. Wow,

(04:44):

from ten am to four pm, happening at Tivoli Village.

or at least let you know about some new music.
We like to say thank you to our friends over
at Innovator out of New York. They always tend to
send us some new artists, new songs that are coming out.

(07:00):
There is a new group called Day twenty six and
they're new to me. They may not be new to you,
but they've sent over a song that will have a
little snippet of its Day twenty six. The song it's
called over You and let's take a listen.

Speaker 3 (07:20):

Speaker 4 (08:17):
I'm knowing saying that you're ready when.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
You say that you feeling toodt it hear.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
The one of us sut down for bell? Is it
very commitment? Are we giving you bill? Maybe because we
hid and everything that we feel for us.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Now you can go and download this music or listen
to it on your favorite streaming platform. The song is
out now, so i'd like to think once again, thanks
to a friends over innovator for sending that over to us.
And we'll let you know about any new artists that
pop up on the radar. So that's our other segment
that we have for new artists and new sounds. As

(08:54):
we head over to one of our favorite places, the
grindot online, you can go to dj retro Las Vegas page.

there that sits there for you so you can know
the top ranked and it's you know, it's about Ranker.
Ranker dot com is the website that is providing us,

(09:17):
but it really sheds a light on indie artists. And
one thing that we're gonna start doing is actually showcasing
and letting you know about these top five indie artists
that do appear on their ranks. Okay, on the ranked list.
So it has been updated on October first, twenty twenty four,

(09:37):
and as of that, we'll go over the top five

Since their debut with whatever People Say I Am the
other song that they have That's what I'm Not, they've

(11:11):
evolved their sound, incorporating elements of indie rock, post punk,
and even psychedelic influences. Ranked number one on the Very

the Best Pop Punk Rival Bands Bands Excuse Me, and
number five on the two hundred plus Best Indie Artists

(11:32):

(11:56):
his solo projects that he has out right Now. His
music blends R and B, funk and indie elements, showcasing
his distinctive style and innovative approach, and Lacey is recognized
for his smooth vocals and intricate guitar work. Now, you
guys know I love guitar, not so much electric guitar.
Electric guitars cool, I'll take it. But it's something about

(12:18):
that acoustic man that's earned him in the voted following
and critically acclaimed. So Steve Lacey. Now you can vote here,
cast your vote on his website. Number four. Tame Impala,

(12:40):
for slus's psychedelic soundscapes and introspective lyrics. Blending elements of rock,

and identity. So Coney Gray and again come on over.

(13:47):

follow dj Retro nineteen ninety on Instagram. And we will
take any kind of requests via email and just give
us a call or text. So once again, just send

(14:30):
it over. I hear a lot of times that artists
are looking for a place to put their music, and
we are here for you to do that. Now, I
say that with a caveat. I have a lot of
submissions that come through. And what happens is I'll get
emails saying, hey, go ahead and blast this out and

(14:50):
play this they send it, I'm listening to it, and
then I try to follow up with an email to say, hey, guys,
let's do things in decency and in order, as they
say in the Jetge decency and in order. I'll reach
out to you. I'll text y'all, call you, I'll email
you to say, hey, I need you to fill out
this social media release form which gives me permission to

(15:12):
play this song. Because what happens is if I put
this music out on the internet and on my show,
and a lot of times, you guys, do you know,
place your music with ascap, BAI or other services that
will make sure that you get monetarily paid, they'll file

(15:34):
acclaim against me. And if I don't have anything to
show that you guys gave me permission or sent this
over to me via email to want me to promote this,
it will be taken down and that's a strike against me.
So if you're sending in any submissions, please know that
there will be a follow up email from my team
here and we want you to fill that out. You
can also go to the page on the homepage and

(15:57):
it has social media release forms on my podcast. You
can actually submit everything yourself and instead of sending one, two,
three emails to get it done, you can just send
it one time with your submission to give us permission
here at the Grind and for me DJ Retro to
spend your very very very very important music that you

(16:19):
have put together. Okay, okay, okay, all right, love you guys.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Djdjro energy with the wisdom sense of a rich Man
knowledge in the rhythm. This is what I'm mung sitting
and come up with a style.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
So how inter rack altogether better with the crowd narmer
for a second, and the.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Record start spending.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
And I'm falling to the state.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
No matter what I'm just really what you've just heard
was the DC coming from this song the formula. Every
time I hear that track. It reminds me of him
being what we call the West Coast rock him at
the time, and during that time of hip, we'll go
through all of the verses of the song. With the
first verse, let's repeat that high energy flowing with the wisdom,

(17:08):
sense of a rich man, knowledge and the rhythm. This
is what amusing to come up with the style, so
I'll interact altogether better with the crowd nervous for a second,
and the record starts spinning and a fall into the
state of mind of what I've just created. Pump it
like the doctor d into the sucker's ready to leap

(17:32):
up on a tip where we made it creative. So
I'll never be regarded as a regular more than just
a little bit better than my competitor. These lyrics. Man,
you should never underestimate the passion a hold for the
stage with the cooling, a thrashing clocking, the concoction created

(17:56):
by me. When read you read E equals the deal
to the sea, knowledge and the talent that my mother
had borne, the equals and artists that won't be worn.
What is that, dre It's the formula which you've just heard.
Was the first first from the formula stage name the

(18:17):
DC government name Tracy Lan Curry from Texas first album
that debuted nineteen eighty nine, No One Could Do It Better,
which was released on July thirteenth, nineteen eighty nine on
Ruthless Records, And if you're not familiar with Ruthless Records,
that is Easy Ease Label, Easy East label. Once again,

(18:41):
NWA if we had the reference was signed to Ruthless Records.
The DC no One Can Do It Better West Coast
and the genre of West Host gangst Rap g funk
if you want to call it early early stages of
gfunk four studio release singles. Was this coming off that
albums Funny Enough, The Doctor and the Doc or the

(19:07):
Doc and the Doctor, the Formula and mind Blowing were
the tracks that were coming off being released as singles
on that album. Now, I remember at the time, parental
discretion was one of those things that they were pushing
at the time, the with the on Salada Gangster Rapp

(19:27):
parental advisory stickers all over these albums, and you needed
somebody to actually go in and have a parent to
actually go in and body these these albums for you.
But guess what, they still sold it to us so
that that really didn't work. First time I was exposed
to the DC was when I was in high school.

(19:48):
I would always get the wood shop and that was
the time that we all got together because that's when
all the cool kids would be in there with these
boom boxes that were just amazing, cost a lot lot
of money, big speakers, big boom, a lot of batteries,
and our teacher at the time would actually give us
time toward probably fifteen minutes toward the end of the

(20:09):
day after we cleaned up, they were able to just
blast music in the shop and we cannot see catch
up to what was new. There was no Internet at
the time. It was all word of mouth, and at
the time we were really hooked on this new sound
of gangster rap with ice Cube in NWA. The amazing

(20:30):
thing about this was is that the DC in his flow,
in his cadence, he didn't have to curse. Everybody else
was cursing. His flows were like rock him. That's what
we called him, the West Coast Rock Him. We did
nobody else did. This wasn't in the media. We just
referred to him as the West Coast Rock Helm because
his flows and his cadences the lyrics were so intent,

(20:55):
and it just caused you to take a pause and
listen to what he was saying. So clear, crisp, and
concise when he delivered his lyrics, the album started to
get some traction. You heard great reviews coming out, especially
from a music critic at the time. Robert Chriscau of

(21:18):
The Villa's Voice said that the first three songs have
music that is funky, multi dimensional and engaging, but the
rest of the album's funk diminishes and leaves listeners having
to focus on the doc's inferior lyrics. Wow. Another quoted

(21:39):
review came from Daniel Wiseman of The La Weekly, which
he called the doc a good rapper whose rhymes spring
out like menacing jacks in the box just when you
think he's about to tread over the same old rap cliches.
Amazing reviews. Let's get into the thirteen tracks that were

(21:59):
featured on this solo album from the DC title track
for well, first first track, Let's talk, It's Funky enough,
Number two, mind blowing, three Lend Me and Ear. Now,
when it comes down to lend me and ear, this
is where he flips the script on you, just when

(22:21):
you think that he's gonna keep this same cadence in pace.
He speeds it up and it's more like he was
like Twister back there, just just the way he just
mixed up the flow, let the bass go. Beautiful but
deadly was a great track. But then that's when he
that's when he brings in the rock side of it.

(22:43):
And at the time he was just mixing the rock
with heavy guitar with rap, and it was a beautiful sound.
The DLC and the Doctor number seven, number eight, no
One Can do It Better? Nine World Win Period, Pyramid,
Excuse Me eleven, The Formula one of my favorites. When

(23:06):
it comes down to track number twelve, Portrait of a Masterpiece,
when he's going through this rhyme and he kicks out
the first two verses, he's going so fast he stops
like he's like he's catching his breath. Drake comes over
the calm in the booth and say, yo, you all right.

(23:27):
He's like, yeah, just catching my breath. Next thing, you know,
takes a and he just finish finishes the rhyme off,
Oh my God, Portrait of a Masterpiece, And then we
come down to the last track on the album, which
features in WA, which that in itself. How you have

(23:50):
all these artists, you have NWA in a track, They're
all using typical gangster rap, cursing and everything. And the
DC comes in with his track his verse, no cursing,
perfect blend of same gangster rap, but two different ways

(24:11):
of delivery, which amazes folks. Wow, if I had to
tell you to go out and check out an album,
I need you to go get buy it. And we're
encouraging we need to get back to buying music and
buying CDs, buying vinyl. These artists are not making a
lot of money from streams, but go out and buy

(24:32):
the product, put it in your hand, open up and
look at the sleeve and read the credits and you'll
be amazed at what you find. So today we talked
about the DC, how he came on the scene once again.
His career was short lived due to an auto accident

(24:52):
back in nineteen eighty nine. He tried to come out
with the two other additional albums that were after that
Health their Skins Alter Induces, which followed in years to come,
but didn't have the notoriety as a solo album. So
once again, I encourage you everything that we talked about
today is for educational purposes only to talk about in
debut and highlight the artists here at the Grind. We

(25:15):
don't own any of this music. But again this is
not an official biography. But again the purpose of this
is actually to expose you too early on genres of music.
In this particular case in which we're talking about today
is gangster rap and a rap from the West Coast.
Once again, this is DJ Retro from The Grind signing
off and don't forget to go purchase and buy this music. Peace.
