Speaker 2 (01:34):
Russ? Nope, nope, nope. That's all good. At NHL Draft
buzz dot com.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, there you go, NHL Draft that's all right. Okay, okay,
So that's a mouthful, But we got the man Russ
to join us on the show and we're gonna break
down rookie camp. And the first thing I want to
say or ask you, Russ, was so far with the
(01:58):
group of guys that are there now right, what was
your like, your overall view of just the training camp itself,
those couple of days, those couple of practices. Just what
was your overall assessment?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, I thought John Snowden ran a good camp. I
mean the camp was very succinct. I think players learned
from the start to the finish. I wasn't there yesterday,
but apparently some good things happened there. You know, there's
a good group of players could be better, you know,
like Oliver Bonks, but on the ice, he hasn't played
in games. Lee Jenko hasn't played at all. So you know,
I mean it could have been a little better. And
(02:39):
there's guys in college obviously Portamonton and such that just
can't make it. So, you know, but if the guys
that were there, and Jack Bergl and guys like that
overseas too. But you know, if the guys there, it's
a pretty pretty good group. You know, if you want
to talk about NHL readiness, I don't think there's any
NHL readiness in the group. And I know that kind
(03:00):
of goes against the grain because people are hoping Alex
Bump will make the team and and then maybe you know,
some of them are hoping for some other players. And
I'm here to tell you that while things are close,
I don't anticipate it now, doesn't mean they won't do it.
You know, the key to Gabrinkan is Gabrencan. I was
(03:21):
just sayingbcen. It was like I was tongue tied. Gribencan's
kind of like spotty, like he he has really good shifts,
you know, he four checks, he does all those things.
You know. The goalie scored even he came out the
second day and said, yeah, I didn't play the greatest game.
He was nice that he got. He played a much
better game in game two, but I don't know if
(03:42):
he's playing a full NHL game here. And I think
this is and this is how I'm going to couch it.
And I think this is where fans have to understand.
If you were expecting let's say you're expecting Gribencan and
or Bump or and or Luchenko to make the team,
well then you have to figure out who who's not playing. Yeah, yeah,
(04:05):
so and and so like all right, if you want
to say Nick de Laurier, fine, okay, that's an easy one.
But let's just say for argument's sake, that you know
Sean Katarrier is the one C and let's say Ziegres
does a good job, and he's starting at two C
and now at three C. If you're gonna go Dvorak
and maybe four C Carson de Ward or someone like that,
or even you put him four C and Kate's three
(04:25):
C maybe, but I think they're gonna have Kates on
the wing. Then all of a sudden, if Kates goes
on the wing, and let's say they have to play
new Luchenko because they don't send him back, and the
centers of jam they're gonna put him on the wing,
so then and it wouldn't be it may not even
be for a whole season, Like where are all these spots?
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah? Yeah, if if you want to put on line
right right, because that's.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
But he's not ready for that yet, right, I'm.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
With you, so, and that's what I that's the that's
the reason why I wanted to get your take on
this assessment here on the whole group of players that
are here at this rookie symposium or this rookie camp.
I I kind of feel the same. I'm not looking
for any of these guys to make the team this year.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Would it be cool?
Speaker 1 (05:13):
All right? But frankly, I think with the Luchenko still
not there, with the bump still not there, right, you
know what I mean, I'm with you on that. Look.
I would love to see these guys get to play
(05:34):
significant time in the AHL with the Fantoms, and and
that's exactly where I think these guys belong.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, Okay, I see a really good Fantoms team to start,
Like it's just like build the best Fantoms team you can.
You have a you coach with John Snowden, yes talking
about player development. These guys can still use development. Let
that go first, yeah, and then worry about the other
steps later, because again, when you have a new coach,
a new coach is not going to want to play
(06:02):
a lot of rookies. He's not, and I understand that.
Or guys are not much playing experience, so you know,
you look at the whole equation and you're kind of like, yeah,
you know, and look, Alex Bump is a good player.
I don't know if he's anything more than a third
line player though, and maybe at his height he could
be a second line player, but if you're a really
good team, I'm not sure about that. But the same
(06:24):
things that I was seeing out of Alex Bump at
the end of the season last year with the fantoms
I was seeing in these games def Camp. I don't
want to hear about how many goals he pumped in
def Camp, Deafcamp's Depcamp. Yeah with you and even his
rookie games. Just you know, it's a put together game,
so guys could kind of showcase, but they don't all
play together. So I'm not going to hold it all
against him either. But it's not like he excelled offensively
(06:46):
he didn't. So I feel like there's still physical, you know,
physical gains that he could get. I still feel like
there's things he could learn. And Snowden's a great teacher.
I don't know, if you know, I don't know if
Rick Hocket's going to have time to teach, like and
so like too. Yeah, he's got a brand new team.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Yeah, and he's got a lot on his plate. Talk
it does, yeah, do you know what I mean? And
you know, I was that kind of almost the approach
that Torts had, Like was he trying to teach a
little more than maybe he should have just been doing
x's and o's or was it.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
The other way around? No, it was the other way around.
I think he taught more than he wanted to. Yeah,
And actually I think because if you remember when he
sent Cam York down and everything else, that was basically
not wanting to teach. So so I think at the
beginning he was teaching a little more than he wanted to. Okay,
and then by last year, you know, guys would call
(07:43):
up for a quick thing and they quick second and
sometimes never come back, like you know, miil Andre kind
of they were. They had a winning record when he
came up and he was doing well, and then he
got lost in the Lappie system for a while. Then
he did okay, then they sent him up and then
it's like he's not good, and then he got hurt,
and then and then got hurt and everybody derailed them,
and so yeah, I think a lot of that was
(08:04):
at play. I think Tuckett will do a certain amount
of teaching, but I don't think, okay, based on the
fact that he's starting everything from zero, that he has
the time.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Okay, okay, and that actually I think that's a perfect
way to put that for Lehigh for this year. And
I really like that approach. Russ is, make that a
good team, because if you make that a good team,
that only bodes well for your big club, you know,
(08:34):
exponentially as far as I'm concerned, you know. And then
if you do need to bring a guy up, right,
you have enough depth on your roster that they're getting
I mean they're trying to build that, they're trying to
get that, but that they can bring a guy up
and then he's not lost in the sauce for a
couple of games. Trying to figure out what system Talcket's
running and the flyers are running compared to what the
(08:56):
fantoms are running.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Right, everything's gonna match now, which is good. So even
if some of these guys start off in Lehi, they're
going to work the same thing when they get called up, right,
So that's a positive. But the other thing is you
have to also look at like some people tell me, well,
he'll learn at the NHL level because they'll have better
players around him, he'll play better with better players. That's
true to a degree. Some players do play better with
(09:18):
better players, but only when they're at a certain point,
not when they're still really learning. And so like, the
only instance that you find that it might work is, yes,
if you have Zadano Chara playing with you on defense,
like with Brandon Carlow, yes you could probably get away
with that. But how many Zdano Charas are It's just
you have to really kind of dig deep for these
(09:39):
for these examples, so kind I kind of default to that.
But you want a guy to be able to thrive, right,
You don't want a guy who's just up surviving Like
last year, Jet Luchenko was surviving, that's all he was doing.
And so the team did the right thing and they
sent him down. We don't know what jet Luchenko is
right now. He was skating on the ice today with veterans,
but he had a groin thing. Let's see where he's at,
(10:01):
you know, like he you know, everybody's like, well, he's
too good to go back, Okay. I mean it's not
like he was, you know, two points a game or
anything close to that. He was on a bad team too,
But the point is, let's just see where he's at.
They can keep him up a while, They could try
and get him traded whatever. He could stay a while
and and space out the nine games. But I don't
know if he's ready to go gangbusters like a lot
(10:22):
of these other guys are going to be trying to
winch up. So he's going to try and he might
be able to survive. But again, do you want him
surviving on the wing or do you want him thriving
at center? Because I don't know if he's there's a
space for him at center, honestly.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Yeah. And see that's the thing, and I would much
rather him be playing his natural position. Yeah, okay, because.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
In full power play PK all of it.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
See, and that was the biggest thing that I think
has hindered the Flyers over their number of years. You
may agree to disagree with me on this RUSS where
they took a number of players and try to basically
take a round peg and force it into a square hole,
right with changing players from being centers to wings and
from wings to centers.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, playing them on the off side like York and
Sanaheim had both playing their off side for like the
last two years. Those things, I agree, I mean, and
they got some gains out of it, and they may
have made them better players, right, But it's a tough
road to go, I exactly, But yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
I was just gonna say, if if Luchenko looks like
he's ready, I still won't play him at center, Like
I wouldn't play him at center, Like you don't start
them off at center in the NHL. I mean, you
can't do it because again, the if you want him,
let's say he is a chance to be in the
top six, right, and let's just say secrets you know,
doesn't look as good at him as him at center,
(11:49):
but he's going to take face offs against like top
six guys that are much much stronger than him. Like
that's why you can't put him as a top six center.
You could put him as a top six winger if
you was certainly ready. But again, even if you put
them a top six winger, now who you're moving down
like Brink, That means Brink is definitely third line, maybe four.
You know, there's a lot of alterations to go there.
(12:10):
And I'm not saying this like the Flyers or a
playoff team, They're not. What I'm saying is they have
to kind of get a cohesion going at the beginning
with a new coach. That's difficult to do. They have
seven preseason games, which next year they won't, but still
it's difficult thing to do.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
And and and they have kind of limited time in between.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
You know, limited in between for sure for practices.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Yeah, for practice. That's That's what I'm trying to get
at here too, you know what i mean. So you
get these these camps that these guys get to have,
and then that's basically the only amount of time that
Tacket's really going to have with these guys, you know
what I mean. And then that you have to make
decisions on quite a handful of players. Yes, and I'm
(12:58):
with you, Russ, I don't think any of these guys
are gonna be worthy of making a roster spot. I
would love to see them down at the fans.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Yeah, I mean I I you know, was talking to
someone with a keen eye there and that person we
were going back and forth and we were chatting about players,
and that person said, and and this person has a
job in the league. And that person said, I didn't
see anybody on the ice last couple of days. That
has give me a reason to say they should be
in the NHL.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
And there you have it.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
And that went for the Rangers too, by the way,
Yeah you know, I know, yeah, yeah, this goes for
the Rangers too. So Gabe Perole, all of them included.
So and I walked away with the same impression. That
doesn't mean something can't change over the next seven games
preseason games. But again preseasons like NHL half speed, and
they're gonna play and because there's seven games, there's gonna
(13:54):
be like five guys, six guys. Yes, it's made home
game in the lineup at the same time. So it's
again still hard to.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Tell exactly, and you're not going to have a lot
of the same guys that you're going to have when
you have your full roster and things of that nature.
So okay, I'm with you all right now.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
If you want to know how players did yet, just
start firing them off and I'll answer, yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
So that's that's kind of what I want to do
now because I just want to throw a couple of
players at you here because I don't want to spend
too much time on that. Because you gave me an
overall assessment of players. What did you think of Bjarnson?
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Yeah, Beyarnson after the first couple of goals game one,
which weren't great, kind of settled in and so he
looked good. He never got settled in Game two, like,
he just really didn't and they only played him a
half game, so you know, overall, honestly, I think the
same inconsistencies that plagued him in the past still plague him,
(14:49):
and I think that's something he will work on this
year's first year as a pro. He's only twenty, so right, okay,
I think he has you know, he has potential to
play in the NHL. Well, I don't know if I
see one a potential I so far have not seen that,
but there's a lot of time with him, so.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
We'll see, Okay, Okay, No, I just I was just
curious because, yeah, some things happened, and I just wanted
to get what your assessment was of that. I want
to pick maybe one or two defensive players. I want
to throw watching here, and I saw a lot of
folks talking about Oliver bonk m and give me a
(15:25):
breakdown of what you thought he did in this in
this rookie games, in these rookie camp here.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Remember he didn't Yeah, he didn't play the games. He's
just in the camp right right. So what I saw
out of him, and we had an exclusive interview with
him on Lockdown Flyers, so people can go check that out. Yeah,
I saw really good skating. I saw him, and I'm
not sure he was even skating at one hundred percent,
I think because they don't want to get him injured.
So I think he was partaking, but maybe could have
(15:53):
even looked even better. Okay, tremendous outlet pass, really good,
smooth position, really good. His shot I think has improved.
I think that I think it's a little more accurate.
And he did talk about how he worked on that
a lot this summer and it showed. So yeah, I
look at all over bunk and I'd say it's not
(16:16):
his fault. Sam Dickinson was his teammate. He didn't lose
a lot to a player because you know, he just
wasn't good enough. He was not to a player who's
an elite offensive player at the junior level and could
be at the NHL level. Yeah, I'm with you, So
we have to remember that. So Monk's greatest strength to
me is and he admitted this, he could play up
(16:37):
and down. He could play you know, first, second, third pair,
it doesn't matter. He could play with anybody. And that's
going to be his strength. He's a plug and play guy.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Okay, awesome, And that was one of why I wanted
to ask you about him, because I got to see
the awesome interview that you guys did with him on Lockdown. Yeah,
and so that's why I wanted to broach that subject
with you guys, because, by the way, you guys got
to go check out Lockdown Flyers Man uh Russ and
Company does a great job over there with covering the
Flyers and and the fantoms as well to Rachel, Right,
(17:10):
Rachel and and you did a great interview with John
Snowden that was amazing. Listen. Yeah, that was a great interview.
Check that out, folks, locked on flyers, got to go
check that out. Okay, So we talked about a goaltender,
we talked about a defenseman, and what was your impression
(17:32):
of Denver Barkie.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, bark looks a little faster. He his shot was
the quickest release in camp. So if anybody who was
shooting in camp, he had the quickest release, including Alex
bomb His Barkiy's release is faster. Kay, Barky really can
rifle it or wire it on, you know when he
is like in a little bit of open ice. So
that's great. We wonder how he'll find that open ice
(17:57):
in the NHL. He found it in rookie game and
that's fine. But I think he's at like one seventy
two or something. Now. I don't know how much more muscle. Yeah,
I don't know how much more muscle he could really
put on that frame. So you know, maybe a little
man strength will come over next year or two. But
you know he's gonna have to fight through checks, He's
going to have to do things. He does have some
(18:18):
elusiveness to him, so he hasn't really gotten creamed yet
from what we've seen, so that part's good. So right now,
so far, so good. But he does have an uphill
battle being a smaller guy.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
Right.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
The fact that he's really offensive will make the Flyers
give him every opportunity to make the club, probably starting
next year. And that's good. That's good for him because
he does have great offense and he'll round out his game.
John Snowe will do that and then we'll see where
he's at.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Okay, so you think he'll spend some significant time with
the ahel this year, then.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Full year, he's got to be there a full year.
I don't I wouldn't even hesitate. I wouldn't even try
and bring him up this year. He really, you know,
he's just turning pro, get stronger. Let him, Let's see
what he can do in a full AHL season. Let
him be a star for that team. Boy.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
I you know, Russ, I'd really like the way you're
thinking here, Man does I see nothing but good things
for the Fantoms, But in the end I see it
good for the Flyers too.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Oh of course it is. Yeah, And that's the whole thing.
I think that's what people have to look at, is
if it's good for the Fantoms. It will translate to
the Flyers if you know, the Flyers have three of
their rookies, which I don't think they will, but if
they did, yeah, it doesn't make the Fantoms as good.
And then you know, it definitely could affect some of
the other players down there, their development with who they
play with. I want to see them all really succeed
(19:44):
at the same time. And hey, if two or three
of them get called up next year and they've played
a full year together, that's even better. Then they have continuity.
They maybe they even play on the same line together,
like I've seen that happen with different organizations, So you know,
why not.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Yeah, And this is the other thing that I really
like about what's going on here. I think that we're
looking at a general manager and ownership now that's trying
to build through the draft, and it's trying to build
this team the right way. Yeah, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
And they're not taking shortcuts. They eventually will hit free
agency next year, they'll hit it bigger. This year. They
kind of dabbled, but they're not trying to build their
team through free agency. I mean, at some point, maybe
they have to do something about goaltending. That's possible, but
in the interim, for a short term they do. But yeah,
they're doing all the other things right. And hey, have
(20:38):
their drafts been perfect? No. I could tell you exactly
the mistakes I think they made in drafts. But it
doesn't mean they don't have good players. They have good players.
I just feel like they could have even been better.
But that's, you know, that's the way it goes. We'll
see how that shakes out.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
I'm with you, I'm with you, and you know, that's
actually a pretty good segue with the fact that you
think that they still need to do something with goaltenders,
and voided Danny Breer, just pull off the the quaint
little what do we mid September move here with the
trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a sixth round
(21:14):
twenty twenty six pick for Ivan Fidotov. And I'm interested
to hear what your take is on this, Russ.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
My take, My first take is, Okay, they got a
six that's fine because they also have to pay anything,
and that's that's a big win. But this is where
it's not a big win. It's not a big win
because now Alexei Kolosoff presumably will agree to play in
Lehigh for a long time. It's not gonna be like
for a game, and presumably we'll have to be happy
(21:46):
down there, and then he's the next call up. Yeah,
so like, honestly, I understand he's the younger of the goalies,
and I think that's why the Flyers did this. I
know they have to get under the cap, but I
think they did still what they would have. They still
would have been under the cap with kolos Off, but
he doesn't make as much. I get it right. However,
they're still hoping for some future value here with Kolosoft
that I'm not sure is there, and that's what we're
(22:07):
going to find out this year. But in the interim,
if there's an injury to val dark colous off as
your backup and he proved nothing as a backup last year.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Agreed, agreed, So that's the scary part.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
At least Padodov, when you put him in, there were
some moments where he looked like he was okay. Now,
there were some bad moments too, don't get me wrong,
But that's what the little bit of age and a
little bit of exercise gave you. Now they don't have that,
so like if there is an injury, like there's an
injury to Eartha, and then Valdar is your starter, which
he's never been the starter, so that's new for him,
(22:39):
and then you would have colos Off as your backup
for you know, whatever amount of time. I'm not sure
that's helped your situation, you know what I mean, considering
they want to make a step forward this year, So
that's trick. That could be tricky.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Yeah, so that's why. So that's kind of what I
was doing Russ here. I was a little bit scratching
my head on this one too. I get it. You
cleared three point two off the off the cap, but
you already paid his bonus. You don't have to pay
any of the money to trade him to to Columbus.
And you just said the kind of person, the kind
(23:15):
of goaltender that Columbus is gonna get. I mean, he
showed flashes. I think if he had a little bit
different environment, I guess, I don't, I don't know. I saw.
I was so high on this guy when he came
over to the Flyers. I was so excited because of
watching him throughout his junior career. You know, winning the
silver medal and playing really well, and then.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
He lost development time when he went to the front.
He lost development time. He didn't play for that season,
and so you know, and I think you know, and
I think that hurt him a little. And so maybe
this year he makes it back up. It's possible. And
the elephant in the room is I know there are
some Flyers fans that think, well, they've cleared the space
so they can go and off for Carter Hart something.
And I don't know. I can't tell you what's gonna
(23:59):
happen with that. I think Danny will answer to that
this week, so we'll be asked that and then we'll
see what happens with that. But I know that's what
some people are thinking.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
I I think that door is closed.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
It might be, it might not be. I can't tell
you for sure.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
I mean, now with with a Fidotov move, maybe, but
I thought it was closed when they were when they
brought in Vladar.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
But yeah, yeah, you don't know, Yeah, yeah, we don't know.
All right, Hey, it's gonna be weird, like I can't
play definitively, Okay, all.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Right, well, gosh, man, there you have it. Folks. We
had a great breakdown of rookie camp and the rookie
games here and they wrap up camp today right or
tomorrow today, I think today, Okay, final practice and everything today,
so for the rookie camp and then uh training camp
for the big club starts the eighteenth.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
We don't know for sure, it's either Thursday or Friday. Okay,
I know for sure. Yet I do want to say
this too, because you know, Tucker Robertson, this was the
first we saw from in a flyers area, you know,
with flyers stuff, phantoms and flyers. I know he's been
playing in the AHL. He's pretty good. I think he's
a good defensive center, and and he was good in
both games. So was Carson Dewart. He was good in
(25:19):
both games. Steady as she goes. Now. Dwart did have
some assists in the first game and maybe he got
one in the second. But they're not really looking for
a lot of points out of either one of these guys.
But they do everything else well.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
They're going to be like a fourth line center, right,
That's what you're think.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
They do all those other things, and so and I
think you know, and I think Robertson was brought in
because at the HL level, especially if de Wart were
to play in the NHL, then you're gonna need another
center down there. And I think he's that insurance.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Yeah, and he even has he even has you know,
five games up with the Flyers as well too.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
And yeah he got those games. Last year we did
we did interview Carson two on Lockdown Flyers. I had
gotten an ex blusive about a week ago, so that
was fun. Sir.
