But now on to some business at hand. And the
business at hand is this episode of the Hockey Writers, Inc.
And now right, folks, we are talking about episode number
one eighty nine, Oh my gosh, one eighty nine, episode
number one eighty nine, and some tough decisions lay ahead
for the Flyers as the trade deadline looms.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And this marries.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Perfectly with Lance's article that he just recently released here
just the other day. Hop on over to Steel Flyers
dot com and check out Lance's latest article. The editor
in chief has always given us some great stuff to ponder,
and with with nothing left to to to ponder on
(02:36):
this one as well, Lance has given us a lot
to think about here on this one, and there are
some tough decisions that are that are gonna.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Have to be made.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
And Lance, talk to me about some of the inspiration
and some of the ideas that you have in your
article and some of the players that you talk about
and where they could potentially end up and what we
could get in return.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Well, yeah, that's gonna be a mouthful, right, So we
know that, Yeah, we know that. Before the break, before
the break, you know, Danny finally got rid of and
the break being the Four Nations Championships, finally got rid
of Morgan Frost and Joel Farrabee. Now one, definitely Morgan
(03:23):
Frost was more happy to get rid of than Joel.
But you know, flateral damage, you know, it needed to
happen in order to you know, move in the right direction,
Danny thought. So you know, he shipped him out to
Calgary and that was back on January thirty first. But
(03:43):
you know, with everything back moving again into regular season
play now and the March seventh trade deadline looming ever closer.
All right, tick tick, right, it's gonna be some tough
decisions to make here in the next couple of days.
(04:05):
Let's be honest, it's fastly approaching. We being the team,
made the decision to to get rid of some of
these guys, and and when you start to sell some
of these guys off, you know, and settle for that
second round pick, like they did with Morgan Frost and
(04:25):
and some some some already drafted talent coming back, which
they said they didn't want to do. They they hung
that bait out there for quite a long time with
Morgan Frost trying to get a first round pick for him,
and it never came because he's not deserving of one. Kudos,
hope him all the best and wish him all the
best in Calgary, him and Joel, but just wasn't working here.
(04:49):
But you know, the even with the Flyers playing great
the last couple of games, this is Flyers hockey, right,
they look like they're going to tank, and they win
just enough games to not pick in the lottery and
(05:13):
lose just enough not to make the playoffs and manage
to get in that horrible area where they don't get
a lottery pick. You know, somebody that's going to be
a game changing type player in the draft, and then
they manage not to make the playoffs and make a
playoff run, so you get that twelve thirteen, fourteen, fifteenth
(05:34):
overall pick. That's going to be another Scott Lawton's going
to be another Morgan Frost, gonna be another Tyson Forrester.
A good NHL player, but not a game changer. And
speaking of Scott Lawton, we all know that his name
as well has been in the trade rumors for quite
(05:54):
some time. We know the Flyers absolutely are in love
with them. I mean, let's be honest. He's been a
good pro, right, I mean.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Okay, but they're so in love with him Lance that
you know they they got a second round offer for
him and they didn't take it. You know, you you
pointed this out in your article.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I did. You're not gonna get.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
A first round pick for Scott Lawton, even if it's
a team that is I mean, like some of the
other teams that I've seen him rumored to be for,
like Edmonton, they don't even have a first round pick.
Some of the other teams don't even have a good
first round pick. Why would you do that a man?
You know, well, let's.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Let's talk about it, Steve, because I mean, he's gonna
be thirty one years old pretty soon. Yeah, he's been
in the league twelve years. He's all with the Flyers,
and you know, he's been a consummate professional. Let's love me.
He loves meet in the locker room, gives one hundred
percent while he's out on the ice, he four checks,
(07:03):
he's back checks, he's but he's a change. He's been
here twelve years. He's been part of the mediocrity for
some time. He's he's grown accustomed to this losing ways
and not really being this competitive force in the in
the in the playoffs, you know. And and to be honest,
(07:25):
he's a cookie cutter type piece here because he's he's
Scott Lawton. You had Morgan Frost, you got rid of him.
You have Sean Katurier, you have Pailing, you have Noah
Cads who's playing really well right now. But they're all
the same player. They're all the same player, cookie cutters, right.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
And even with Scott Lawton's he has the ability to
play wing, he has the ability to play center. But
he's he's got eight goals and twenty two points at
the time I wrote this article. He's he's making three
million dollars, so it's not really a bargain, but it's
not really overpaid. You know, he's signed through the end
(08:10):
of next season, and teams are going to be calling
about him because if they've already made a big move.
He can be that kind of guy that can kind
of be a safe pick. And with all the other
guys that are out there as far as centers go,
as as far as you know, brock Nelson, he's getting
(08:31):
paid six million dollars, Dylan Cousins Abers is getting paid
over seven million dollars. And of course you know Peterson
from the Canucks is you know, eleven point six million dollars.
That's a So Scott Lawton's a bargain pick. But let's
face it, he's not worthy of a first round pick
in my mind. And I said this, like Steele said
(08:53):
in my article, the Flyers have to stop thinking that
he's going to be and accept a second round pick
for him, but be ready to fire back when they
offer that second round pick. And just like they did
with Calgary when I predicted that for Morgan Frost as
well in saying, hey, we wanted a first round pick,
(09:14):
we'll settle for a second round pick from you, but
you're gonna have to give us an already drafted prospect
that is close to being ready. We want to turn
the tide here, we want to compete at some point.
You guys are in a playoff spot. You guys are
in need of this player, show me you're in need
of him and let a prospect come. And for Scott
(09:39):
Lawton's sake, I suggested the Toronto Maple Leafs because they
were rumored to be kicking the tires pretty heavy on him.
And he's from Toronto area, just probably an hour or
so away from Toronto, you know, so I don't think
he would have a problem with going back home there,
And the Maple Leafs could use him. Honestly, they have Matthews,
(10:05):
they have Taveraes. He would slot in nice in that
third line role and kind of solidify three solid lines
for him.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
In what they have too bad on the face off
dot neither, you know.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
I mean he and he can play wing, he can
play center. He's versus exactly, you know, the fly I
can see why the Flyers don't really want to just
give him away. But at the same time, he's been
here for over twelve years. He's thirty one years old.
If you're really building for the future, is a thirty
one year old in your five year plan? I mean,
(10:40):
I don't think he should be. I don't think he
should be. I think you have the depth on the
team as far as veterans go. Obviously you're not going
to get rid of Sean Couturier in that massive contract
you gave him, so you have veteran presence there.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I don't know they got rid of pretty lickety.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
That's five million, not the okay, but that you know, Okay,
Sean Coturier is getting found. But you know, I suggested
a second round pick and a particular player in you know,
Toronto's scheme of things there in their prospect pool who
also plays with Oliver Bonk and Denver Bonky Barkie. I'm sorry, but.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
You know, I mean that's brilliant by the way.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
You know, I really like that Cohen. I you know,
I really like him. But you know, that would be
something that that would entice you know, not only Brier,
but you know, the team to bring back somebody like
that young who's already playing with some of your top
prospects that you've drafted they were willing to get. Yeah,
(11:46):
but but I mean the Jets. The Jets are the
team that has has shown and and and come out
and said that they've they've well maybe not them, but
the the powers that be as far as the rumor
mills go, and uh have come out there and said
that they've offered a second round pick, and if they
don't sit here and take it, you know, that would
(12:07):
give them what five second round picks. You know how
you could package that up and move up to draft
another first round pick or two. With that amount of picks,
you could have four, potentially four first round picks this
year if you wanted them. If you wanted to package
them up and move into the first round to select somebody,
(12:30):
you could, or you could draft five prospects in the
second round and two or you know, two in the
first or whatever you end up getting for anybody else
you trade and totally rehaul your whole, your whole prospect
pool here. And because honestly, even with the Fantoms playing
(12:51):
as good as they are right now, I do think
they need to clear house on some of these prospects
that are kind of just stuck in that agree know,
you know, some are still some are still prospecting and
coming up the ranks and you know, doing that and
going through the steps, but some need to go. They've
been there for four or five years. They're not, you know,
(13:13):
moving on. You need to make room for new blood
in the lineup and not just have them be thirty
year olds and still playing in the AHL. That's not
getting them anywhere. You need a couple of those guys,
but you don't need a whole roster of those guys.
And you know, we talked about that as well with
(13:34):
another propect or another potential player here in a bit.
But I mean, am I wrong still and thinking that?
Speaker 1 (13:40):
I mean, so, here's kind of what my take on
this whole thing is about. Where where I believe the
Flyers are looking at this. The Flyers look at Scott Lawton,
and I can understand why they're asking for a first
round pick, because that's what they mean to the Flyers. Unfortunately,
the league is not looking at Scott Lawton and going, oh, yeah,
(14:00):
I'm gonna give you a first round pick for that guy.
I have thirty one year old that only has twenty
two points on the year. I mean, it's okay, Yeah,
he's only making three and a half million dollars a
year for the next two years or whatever. But so
what that's a drop in the bucket for some of
these teams. You know what I'm saying, Quite honestly, I
(14:22):
think they should take the offer from the Jets, take
the second round pick see if they can get a
prospect ready.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Guy to come back as well.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
I would much rather have somebody like that, honestly, Lance,
somebody that's been proven over the last two years, in
the last two drafts, that they could potentially take because
you're not gonna get a first round pick for him,
You're just, as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
You're not, in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
Okay, the flyers I think are dangling that bait too
deep down the and there isn't a single fish out
there grabbing on that, and and they're trying to offer
up us a you know, hey, we'll give you a
second round for him, you know what I mean, like
kind of you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
So, I mean, there should be some some leeway back
and forth there. But let's let's correct our numbers here
for a second. He's got twenty seven points on the
year of this year, right on average. Over his twelve
year career in Philly, He's only averaged eight goals and
twenty two points a year over his twelve year time span.
You know, if you take all all of it and
add it all together, and you know, yeah, mostly his
(15:37):
on average, he's scoring about eight goals and twenty two points,
so every year, so that's not you know, maybe thirty
twenty fifteen the next you know, So anyway, clearing that.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Up, you're not lighting it up, okay, is the point.
And he is a serviceable NHL professional hockey player, and
that's as far as he goes. He's way past a ceiling.
There's there's nothing else that's gonna happen from him. You're
you're lucky to get what you get. And now what
(16:10):
what does he bring? He brings good locker room skills.
Now you can't say that, well, he's a Stanley Cup
winning guy because he hasn't been right, and you can't
say that he brings that kind of experience to a
team that's trying to go for the Cup, you know
what I'm saying. So it's like I understand Danny that
that he's a first round pick worthy for you guys,
(16:33):
for the Flyers, but not for the rest of the league.
And you're gonna have to take what you can. Here's
the other thing too. If the league started a stopped
right now, I believe the Flyers would be ninth, eighth
or ninth. Okay, that doesn't qualify you for the draft.
(16:54):
Right as far as I know, I think you have
to be in the top six or eight maybe or
seven to get in the draft.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
They're getting the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
You mean, no, no, no, the draft built a lottery.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
I mean the lottery lottery.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Yeahs say that again. Yeah, it would be like the
top ten teams.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Top ten all right, So if you're picking, if you're
picking at least within the top ten, which the Flyers
would be right now if the if the if the
season stopped right.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Now the fly quit winning games.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Okay, I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
But see all the others and it's like I understand, Yeah,
if they win a couple of quick games and then
they could be right back in it. But I think
with the moving of Frost and the moving of Joel
and clearing a seven point one million in cap space,
the CAP's going up next year, they've got a stockpile
of draft picks that they're trying to build on as well.
(17:55):
Because like what Lance said, I think what the Flyers
are going to need to do is and and they're
gonna need to be smart about how they do this
and not overspend because that would be a huge mistake
because that would just waste away all the capital that
you just tried to build, but you could package up say.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
First round pick.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
And two or three second round picks in this year's
draft to try to get in the top three. See
my whole mentality, my whole idea of what I believe
the Flyers need to do is pick in the top three.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
That's gonna be a heather do. But at least at
least in the top five players. I think there's at
least four that are you know, guys that you could
you know, build a team around, or you know, I
would be worthy of helping Mishkoff in that sense, coming
out very young and could play next year.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
To the top five. But I believe, and this is
what I've said this in the past, this needs to
be the watershed year. This needs to be the year
where the wrench gets completely turned sixty or eighty degrees,
where you turn the corner with some of the additions
(19:24):
that you're gonna do with some of the draft picks
that you're gonna have, with some of the impact players
that you could bring to the team. Now that you
have money to spend and draft pick capital to get players, Okay,
you can package up players that you have some of
(19:45):
the prospects that are, like what Lance said, are not
doing well or are not progressing. You can package them
up with draft picks as well to get where you
need to go and get the players. Get your guy, Danny.
You have built the capital to get your guy, go
(20:07):
do it.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
And I do believe in Danny in his drafting abilities
and that who he has surrounding him to to, you know,
advise him. But yeah, I think this is the year
that you need to shed. If you're gonna shed. Uh,
you know you you traded Vorcheck, you traded dru you
(20:28):
traded prover Off, you traviled, traded Kevin Hayes. You you
now have moved on from Morgan Frost, you moved on
from Joel Farrabee. If you're going to do it, do it.
Let's keep going. If guys are have interest in a
thirty one year old player, then let's do it. If
he's not in your five year plan, then let's go
(20:51):
get him out the door. You have other prospects, proSP
you know that are prospering, that are coming up the ranks,
then let's make the move. I like Scott Lawton, But
if somebody's offering a second round pick now, then do it.
And if you don't like that second round pick, then say, hey,
(21:14):
you can keep that second round pick because the Jets
is not very good second round pick. Let's be honest there,
it's going to be a late pick there. They're probably
going to do pretty well this year. They're first overall
last time I checked in the standings when I wrote
this article, So you know, they got a two time
Vesno Trophy winning goalie behind them, you know, And honestly,
(21:39):
I think they would be willing to move or do
something because, let's face it, Steel they're hard to get
free agents like there, Nobody wants to go play in Winnipeg. Okay,
it's snowy period, it lasts seven months, seven months of snow.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Up, okay, But for nobody not wanting to play there,
they got Rick talkt to be the coach who is
now a Jack Adams Award winning coach.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Right, didn't didn't he win the or was he up
for it? Or did he not win an ims? Up
for it? At least? But yeah, he was up for it.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
But but they they got Rick Talckett to come up
aaron coach. They got a two time VESNA winning goaltender
to go up Aaron play. I mean, they they're building
a team this year that's gonna be a force to
reckon with in the playoffs. I mean, look at what
they've done to the league so far this year was
(22:35):
like what Lamb said, leading in points and everything else
like that. So I mean, if they're offering your a
second round pick for Scoonnie Lawton, Okay, if you don't
want that second round pick, who do you got in prospects?
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Right?
Speaker 3 (22:49):
And that's and that's what I said. You know, I
had them actually calling about Ristallnan and Ristall's name has
been passed a lot as well.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
For riska line in Winnipeg for rist Of Linen.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Well, I had That's what I had in my article
is is oh, okay, you know I believe that, you know,
they may come calling for rist of Linen because they
don't have a lot of right hand shot defensemen and
you know, and they can't get free agents to want
to come up there. They can build through the draft
and they have got certain players that have stuck around there.
(23:25):
But let's be honest, if somebody calls for rist Of Linen,
he's a career minus one hundred and seventy eight. All right, Uh,
he's making five point one dollars for the next two seasons.
It's not horrible, but it's not good either.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
And I would even eat some of that salary just
to get him gone.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yes, yep. I would offer to eat a you know,
a portion of that, you know, a million of that
or something for the next two years if that meant
him departing. And because you have a Mea Landre, you
have Jinning, you have Helgi Gronz, you have Oliver Bonk
coming up, you have to make room for some of
(24:07):
these guys coming up that have shown that they can
play at the level, but they just simply don't have
roster space right now.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
So if they have.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Offered up a second round pick or even say, hey,
I don't want your second round pick, but if you
want him that bad, you know, how about give me
a guy like Colby Barlow, who has scored forty goals
in Junior's last season. He's six foot one, one hundred
(24:37):
and ninety four pounds. He's an absolute dynamo offensively. He'd
be an immediate impact on the power play. You know,
I just I don't know, man, I see something happening
or be willing to eat a guy's contract, like you
(25:01):
know that that's going to be at the end of
the season to make the salaries with you, whatever you
got to do, you know, something that's going to be
up at the end of the year to to bring back,
just to make the deal work for Winnipeg. I'd rather
have proven, proven picks anyway that are prospering after being
drafted and are that much closer to being ready anyway.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
I mean, this is that this is that moment now
where it's the crapper get off the pot moment, you
know what I mean? Because I really think that the
Flyers need to embrace the fact that.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
The moves that you've made, I think.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Free up some space, but I think might be signaling
that you know, they're yeah, they're gonna say they're trying
for the playoffs. But I think the moves that Danny
Brier has made and potentially could make between now in
the trade deadline, it's going to show that the Flyers
are realizing that they're not going to make the playoffs
this year.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
And I think, you know, they need to sit back
and take a look at what they're cherishing, right now,
Scott Lawton, like I said, has been here twelve years.
He has twenty four games of playoff experience in that
twelve years. Okay, Risk, that's a pretty low number, Risk
the linen. You want to hear a low number, Rist
(26:27):
the Linen. He's thirty years old. He was drafted eighth
overall in twenty thirteen. Right, supposed to be an amazing,
amazing defenseman. You know, guess how many playoff games he has?
Speaker 1 (26:42):
What three?
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Two? Big zero?
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Well, you know, all right, and like any.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
Playoff experiences what Eric Johnson? Right, yep?
Speaker 3 (26:57):
And uh Cortorella, yeah right, and you know, and and
he's played and Risk the Linon's played about the same
number of years, twelve or thirteen years. And guess what
this is the first year ever he's been a plus player. Yeah, yeah,
first year ever. And he's been with the Flyers four
years now. So to think that they are so overhyping
(27:23):
these their own players because they like them, they're not
elite players. You know, you used to see a first
round pick go to some maybe thirty year old Vinnie
lecave A or you know, some somebody who was a
real star, somebody who won a couple of Stanley Cups
(27:43):
maybe is getting a little long in the tooth. You know,
Jerome Againla you pick him up for a playoff run.
You know, if you're looking good. These are not the
guys that teams are gonna to give you a first
round pick for to acquire to bring in that you
know they're they're thinking about. And you know, and if
(28:06):
they want the Flyers want to keep these people to
continue on in their and their sense of mediocrity and
just being just good enough to not make the lottery
and just bad enough not to make the playoffs, you
got to go through this. You got to go through
and get rid of all this to start fresh. If
(28:26):
you really want to do a fool rebuild, which you
look like you're trying to commit to with the psippers
of Morgan Frost and Joe Ferrabye, then do it. Then
get rid of everybody and start fresh and get as
many picks as you can.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
Do it as well, because not only are you going
to help the team potentially now, but you're also going
to help them in the long run. And and you know,
I want to switch up here a little bit, Lance
because I want to talk a little bit about what
the Fantoms have been doing here lately, and I think
this ties in specifically to what we've been talking about
with the with the Flyers. By the way, congratulations to
(29:03):
the Fantoms who are six' three zho to one in
their last ten, games and they've been quite frankly on
a tear here as of late with putting a lot
of goals in as well as The flyers have been
doing lately as well.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Too but.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Like you, Said, lance there are those players that are
down there in The phantoms that probably wouldn't be playing
in The, phantoms would be playing with The flyers right,
now a La Emo Andre i'll of you, know pick
somebody that would potentially be playing for the for The
flyers if it wouldn't be for some of that quote
(29:39):
Unquote Scotty lawton esque depth that The flyers, have you,
know and also as far as the defensive, end you,
know with The Eric johnson's and the whole nine. YARDS
i Think nick De laurie is going to get down
this year with what maybe fifteen games maybe, right you,
(29:59):
know you know WHAT i, mean And Eric johnson's gonna
get down with maybe twenty five or thirty games this
year maybe, Yeah, Okay, LOOK i understand that you need
to have those, guys but the only way you're really
going to have those guys that are going to mean
anything to this team are if you draft those, players
develop those, players and then go to the playoffs with those.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
Players i'm just.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
You're not going to be able to buy your way
to a. Championship it's been proven that you, Cannot, okay
many many times. Over and The fantoms have an. Opportunity
they're a fifth place in the division right, now AND
i think they are one spot out of a playoffs right, now,
okay AND i believe they have nineteen games, Left so
(30:50):
The fantoms absolutely have a shot at the. Playoffs AND
i would much rather see The fantoms be successful because
it doesn't affect where they pick in the draft quote.
Unquote if the if The fantoms win a called Or,
cup you, know that does not affect how the flyer's
(31:10):
picking the.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
Draft, no it, doesn't it. Doesn't AND i AND i
see where your mind's going with. THAT i really see
where your mind's, going like to keep these young, guys
get them the playoff experience and everything like. That but
at the same, TIME i CAN i can wish and
hope that The flyers make these moves that we just talked,
about free up some space with the big club and
(31:32):
allow guys like a Mea landre and maybe like A
Helgie gronze to come up and see fifteen games OF
nhl experience and they go back for the, playoffs right
whatever amount of games left when they're, done and then
you know what you're getting for next, season you, know, yeah,
(31:56):
up bring them up now and see what they. Got
SO i can see both. SIDES i can see them
wanting to stay down and get as much playing time
in the miners as they can and when a shot
at The Calder cup OR i can see them gaining
THE nhl. Experience, now if these players are dealt and
you know what you got for next season heading in
(32:16):
the next, season well.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Okay BUT i understand.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
That but but the reason WHY i was trying to
say that is because you're gonna have some of our draft.
Picks they're gonna that are gonna event at some point
here become available to The flyers to play on the.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
Fantoms, sure guys In puget ranks and everything.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
Else, Okay so that's that's exactly What i'm talking about.
Here you you might be able to get a bank
or a barque for for you, know six seven, games
depending who knows, right and, well where are you gonna put?
Them are you gonna put them on The? Flyers you're
gonna put them down The. Phantoms so that's kind of
WHERE i wanted to go with. THAT I I i
(32:57):
think you need to get that experience from. Within you
get that experience with them guys down there in The
fantoms and they went some playoff games and they have
right and some of them guys down there have won
some playoff games last year and. Such but get the,
experience let them do the playoffs and whatever they want down,
there and make sure that you get things right set
(33:18):
up for the big.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Club, Okay and.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
With that, LANCE i think we have covered a lot
here on the, show haven't.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
We? Man, YEAH i think we, have AND i want
To i'll leave with one final thought here about The
flyers in a, sense and with this WHOLE AHL nhl.
Thing if you think The flyers are really for, real
and you think, that you, know some people are, saying, well,
man they've won some games recently and stuff like. That
(33:52):
they played The. Penguins they're playing The penguins again as
we were filming. This but The penguins the last three
out of four games they, played they beat. Them they
look like they're gonna beat them again this. Time but
let's face, it The penguins are not The penguins from
ten years. Ago malcolm is thirty eight years, Old crosby
(34:14):
is thirty seven years. Old Eric carlson's thirty. Four, yeah you,
Know malcolm And crosby are a minus twenty something on the.
Year these are not the players that they once. Were
this is not The penguins team that they once. Were
this is The penguins are a very very much thing
(34:36):
that The flyers were in With vorchek And jeru getting
up there in age and are gonna have to really
push them out the door and restart all. Together. Two,
so if you think that The flyers are for, real
let's see what they Do march first against The, JETS.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
I mean the last okay two games against The. Penguins,
yeah but they utterly dominated The oilers when they Played.
EDMONTON i, mean they made it so that McDavid was
not a.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Factor david just came back from The Four nations.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
Too they made it so that drive title was not a.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Factor, okay and that in and of, itself now goaltending
was standing on its bloody.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Head, okay both, sides, okay but they looked really. Good
they dropped six on On.
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Edmonton they came back out the next, game dropped six
on The, penguins and that game, Was oh my, gosh,
MAN i don't Think i've ever seen The penguins look like.
THAT i just and you can't tell me that it,
was you, know The flyers playing that, well it. WAS
i think it was more or The penguins, weren't you.
Know so.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
It is what it.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
IS i think The flyers are gonna probably end up
doing exactly What lance. Said they're gonna lose just enough
and win just, enough and that's WHERE i think we're gonna.
BE i don't think we're gonna make the playoffs this.
YEAR i think they should be, Buyers i'm, sorry sellers
at the trade deadline and try to shed as much
(36:27):
as they possibly can and get as many more picks
as you can and clear as much cap space as you,
can because you're gonna need some of that to pay
some of the guys that are there now and bring
up some of the guys you need to get and
to attract some free agents now that you have some
money to. Spend, hey.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
You, know but we're still in the second period And
mishikoff has two goals and one assist for three points
in this game. Tonight so he had an amazing every,
game he's had an amazing game since This Four nations.
Break but he's he's really, BUZZING i, think and you know.
(37:11):
It it is nice to see. That but, man we
need we need to gather all of these picks and
Like steele, said focus on moving up in the draft
and getting this young man somebody to play alongside so
that he can have a McDavid dry sidle, team you,
(37:32):
know teammate to play with. Her he can have A Malcolm. Crosby.
Uh that, is you, know the essence that you build. Around,
uh you, know with this tandem at least a tandem
nowadays and, uh a two headed monse.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
As lance likes to always, say guys that you can
hang from the banner from the, rafters a banner you
can hang from the, rafters.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Hanging over the side of the building on the. Freeway
everybody's gonna see that. Face you need.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
Another everybody in the stadium's got that jersey, on you
know WHAT i?
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Mean, Right, yeah can.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
You walk into your section with That mishkov jersey on
and right at? Home, yeah fifty other people in that
section have the same jersey because that. Popular we had
one of those players In Eric. Lindross we haven't had
one really. Since uh Maybe drew was a fan, favorite
but that's all we had at the.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
Time, YEAH i, Agree and when we Had, Lindross so
there was so many other guys on the team that
were there were such great players and such great. Contributors
but by the, way speaking of great, contributors big thank
you to the Lowercase blues Dot.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Net head on.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Over To Lowercase blues Dot net check Out jake and The. Boys,
Man i'll tell you, what thank you guys so very
much for allowing us to have your music as our.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Intro and, uh.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
MAN i tell you, WHAT i would like to try
to get some kind of something arranged for a show
to happen for them to come and. Play so we're
we're trying to work on some things here At Steel
flyers or do something special for you guys this coming.
Spring slash, summer we're gonna try to potentially do a
live show somewhere and maybe hopefully fingers crossing get some
(39:15):
other things going on. Too sore looking for that as.
Well here at some announcements for that coming up here soon.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Too. Well thanks for all you, do, man really appreciate, it, Buddy.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Hey, man you know, again, guys we love this. Team
we want to see, them you, know turn the corner
and do. Well they're buzzing right now for sure with
the the. ADDITIONS i like the additions That danny made
and these. Trades, yeah you, know AND i think that's
(39:46):
what he needs to do. Again he needs to get
Another peltier and you, know prospering young prospect either just
on the brink of making THE nhl or maybe a
season or two in THE, nhl and it's really about
to get. Going, yeah and, man you, know let's let's
(40:07):
let's move out some others and and continue on with
this rebuild and really push it into.
Speaker 1 (40:13):
Overdrive LIKE i, SAID i think this has to be
that watershed, year that at turning the corner year where
you you make those two or three or four whatever
key moves that you need to make in order to
get to that point of. Contention sooner rather than, LATER
i believe is what needs to happen here For. Philadelphia
just my, opinion but thank You lance for all you.
(40:35):
Do man really appreciate That i'm your co Host Ron
Steel flyers and this has been the latest episode of
The hockey writers.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Thinking we will catch you all on the next. One
