(00:44):
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the next episode of The
Hockey Writers, Inc. With your host Man It's Green.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
All right, guys, back to talk some Flyers hockey. Of course,
the season is coming to a close for the Flyers,
but for not all Philadelphia based teams. The Phantoms may
be getting a shot at the playoffs here, so we'll
get into that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
All right, all right, thank you all for hopping on
and joining us. If you like what we do, please
hit the like and subscribe. I'm your co host Ron
Steel Flyers and we would like to say thank you
very much for hopping on and joining us here at
the Hockey Writers Inc. We're talking about episode number one
ninety one, and Lance already just said it. Flyers season's over,
(01:33):
but hey, the Fantoms are making it to the playoffs,
and we're gonna get into all kinds of great stuff
here on the show for you this week. So are
you ready to get going? Lance?
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I think so.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah. We're also gonna talk about a great article that Lance,
our editor in chief, put out here not too long
ago as well. Here that's gonna kind of coincide with
what we're gonna be talking about here as far as
the youth influx coming into the Phantoms and also to
the Flyers here, especially at the end of the season.
So are you ready? Yeah, we are ready. Here we go.
(02:09):
We're gonna start talking about the Philadelphia Flyers. And that's right, folks.
After the uh the exit of mister John Toterella and
the uh the infusion of mister Bradshaw, the Flyers are
now uh what uh five and two.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Now, Yeah, they've done pretty well unfortunately under Bradshaw, with
them tanking like that and not being you know, being
last in the Metropolitan Division. You kind of hope for
them to continue to lose at this point, you don't,
you know, if you're a player, obviously you want to
(02:51):
do everything to keep your job, uh in in the
city if you like it. But yeah, they started to
win some games and they're trying to start the same
old song and dance the Flyers always do. You know,
they not good enough to make the playoffs, but too
(03:11):
good and turn it up in the last minute to
actually get a pick that's going to be worthy of anything.
So let's hope they don't continue to win games. But
at the same time, I'd like to see the team
finish strong. I don't know, I'm kind of torn steal I.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Know, and a lot of folks are too, especially the fans,
because the fans think, oh, it's just easy to lose games,
he can get a better draft pick. But when you
listen to what Danny Briere said, especially when they let
John Tortorella go, and he was like, look, there's a
lot of guys on this team that are playing for
(03:52):
their jobs. Yes, and they might not be playing for
their jobs on this team. They might be playing for
a job on another team somewhere, because you know, everybody
is looking for everybody, right.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, they're not gonna they're not going to be willing
to tank that the fans may be wanting them to
tank so they can get another mishka Esh type player,
but you can't expect a professional athlete to want to tank,
uh for next season, because for them, there may not
be a next season. So yeah, it's it's tough for
(04:24):
sure to watch, you know, these flyers. But I I
think I think it, like in my article, I think
it's time to start seeing the fruits of Briers labor.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, I want to see the youth. I want to
see the youth. But it's tough with the Fantoms being
in a playoff run right now.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
So well, you know, so we got a lot to
dive into here posts, so let's just go start off
at the deep end, right, shall we. You know what
I mean By the way, it was great seeing halfway
back after missing what nineteen games?
Speaker 2 (05:11):
It was out for a significant amount of time for sure.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Yeah, you know, it was great seeing him come back,
you know. And look, we understand that the team is
not going to purposefully lose, So it's not like I'm
expecting that or counting on that. It's just that, you know,
it's very disappointing. However, Lance and I own another show
(05:35):
that we do called Prospect Watch, where we have talked
to quite a handful of probably first round players this
year and I gotta be honest with you, it doesn't
really matter where Philadelphia lands in the first round, because
number one, they have three first round picks now granted
(05:58):
the Edmonton ones and probably be in the late twenties,
early thirties, okay, you know, and and then Florida's might
be you know, maybe a little later too. But regardless
of where they're gonna be picking in the first round,
(06:20):
they've got three first round picks, their first round pick
will be at least in the top ten, at least
in the top ten. Yeah. So with that being said,
if I can borrow a phrase from you that you
use all the time, you know what, I don't really
(06:40):
care where they land because Lance, we have talked on
prospect Watch. Go over to steal Flyers dot com slash
link slash prospect Watch show and check out all of
the first round talent that we've talked to, and you'll
understand why I'm not really worried about it, because I
think there's gonna be some pretty decent players available to
(07:04):
Philadelphia at any point in time, even as far back
as twentieth but are gonna be, you know, gonna be
able to help the team sooner rather than later.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Well, for sure, there's there's ones obviously within the first
four I think that could potentially play as early as
next season, and then there's a bunch after them that
will be maybe one year post draft. Like you're seeing
a lot of these players that are coming into the
league right now for different teams, Demodolph being you know,
(07:43):
one of the one of the latest ones that has
made his pro debut. But there's a lot of teams
steel that are circling the drain with the Flyers. The
Penguins are right there with seventy eight points, when the
Flyers have seventy six, the Kraken have seventy six, the
Brewers have seventy five, the Sabers have seventy seven. So
(08:05):
you know, if win right now, if Flyers win the
last you know, two games, that could really shoot them
up or back towards where they don't want to be,
you know, if the other teams lose. So again, like
you said, who if they pick the right people at
(08:25):
even at ten, say or eight or something, if they
ended up there, they still be pretty well off. But
they have to pick the right.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
People, Okay, And so even like I said, Lance, even
if they go as far back as twenty because I
still think even with the Edmonton pick and the other
first round pick, if they don't trade them, if they
don't package them up and trade them, or if they
just let them go and they just pick where they're
gonna pick, you know what I mean, even those even
(08:53):
those players I think are gonna be helpful to the
team sooner rather than later. And I agree with you.
Once you get the first four or five top players
here in this draft, the other players are at least
it's the end of their junior season to come up
and play the last ten or twelve games with the
(09:15):
big club, you know what I'm saying, right, So that's
kind of where I see some of those players. But
even with the Flyers season coming to an end, you know,
and this is kind of the thing that is really
frustrating to not just you know, you and I, but
(09:36):
the fans as well, is you know, where was this
back in like November? Where was this back in December
or January? You wanted to win and you had a
coach that wanted to win, and yeah, couldn't do it.
You couldn't pull it off with this equipment. You know. Now,
suddenly it's like what happened.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Well, I think I think the Tortorella effect kind of
ran its course and guys kind of were getting peeved
with him and we're not seeing eye to eye or
we're not buying into his ways anymore. And obviously what
ended with Cam York kind of was the last straw.
(10:19):
You know. I think the idea was to have Towards
probably finish out the season and then wait till the
off season to hunt for a new coach. But that
didn't happen because it kind of exploded at the end,
and especially after his coveted Scott Lawton was traded, he
(10:43):
kind of just lost all care of being the coachair.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
So.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Time to move on. You know, that's going to be
an off season question for sure, do you keep who's
the interim coach or do you bring in a new one?
So that'll probably cover that. We'll probably cover that more.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
But yeah, that's exactly what I want to talk about,
like we right now, because honestly, Lance, Okay, look, we
all know that when a team changes coaches, you get that,
you know, a couple weeks months or so, bump there,
you know where the team starts playing a little differently
(11:24):
because they're under a different coach and a little bit
of a different you know, vibe for the team, and
and and things are being done a little differently, you
know what I mean to some extent, I mean, you're
not going to be as the interim coach. You're not
going to come in there and try to, you know, change,
especially with nine games left. I mean, what what what
(11:46):
are you going to do with nine games? Seriously, I
think we've seen more than enough of Bradshaw when Tortorella
during the preseason was sitting up in the press box
and we were the other coaches coach the team, uh,
you know, during scrimmages, during a preseason games and things
(12:06):
of that nature. And quite frankly, I've seen more than
enough of Bradshaw and I would really like to see
him and Rocky hit the bloody bricks. See yuh, don't
let the door hit you on the way out, because
let's face it, the defense sucks, the power play sucks.
(12:28):
How much more do you need me to I'm sorry, man,
I can't. I can't paint a good picture when I'm
not giving any paint, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Like, yeah, yeah, I see what you're saying. I mean,
I definitely would have fired Rocky Thompson at the same point.
Uh yeah, fired Tortorello because Tortorello kind of stuck his
neck out there for Rocky Thompson when he had not
a leg to stand on, you know what I mean,
just just he should have been gone, you know, last season,
(13:04):
and they brought him back, and he stuck his neck
out for him to keep him around and tried to
say he's a great coach. And I mean, I don't
know how a guy that has never played a minute
of power play time in his careers coaching the power play.
But you know whatever, let's have it. A forcer coach
the power play unit. That makes no sense.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
But three years in a row land the bottom end of.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
The league, yeh three, bottom three every not just at
the bottom bottom every two years.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Out of that, yeah, and not just you know at
the end of the year or at the beginning of
the year. No, no, no, no, pretty much from out the
gate all the way through.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Especially when you bring in a guy as talented as
misch cough and you're still not scoring on the power play.
Something's wrong. But Mitch, right, what you got, there's pieces here.
It's not bare bones anymore. There's pieces here that that
you should be able to do something with. I mean
(14:04):
coaching candidates. In my mind, I would say Shaw is
not my pick either. Let him finish out the season, sure,
but I would already be calling David carl from the
University of Denver and most more importantly Todd Nelson from
the Hershey Bears. Back to back HL champion Coach of
(14:27):
the Year in the AHL last year, another strong season
so far this year, as soon as their season ends,
probably by them winning the AHL Cup again, the Colder Cup, whatever, yep,
get him on the phone. The Capitals are number one
team in the East or number two team in the
East all season long. I don't think that guy's jobs
(14:50):
and jeopardy at all. You know, Todd Nelson is just
sitting down the AHL. He has years of experience coaching
youth and he is darn good at Yes, please bring
him in. The Flyers, youngest teams in the NHL. They
need a coach that can coach youth and is used
(15:10):
to coaching youth, not one that prefers to play overage
veteran players.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Okay, so you're saying you would much prefer a coach
that's either at the AHL ranks or even at the
junior ranks, because I like the coach of the London Knights.
I think that would be an excellent coach. The coach
of Denver, like you said earlier, that would be Oh
my gosh, man, can we can we please? So my
(15:39):
question is this, so now you would much rather get
a coach from because you know, let's face it, Philadelphia
tried to go the university route when they when they
hired Dave Hackstall, and I think it was under the
wrong pretense for him to be brought in here, and
he was kind of handed exactly what you were just
(15:59):
talking about a veteran team where he's more used to
coaching the youth, and he didn't. He got more of
a veteran team, you know what I'm saying, And they
were already setting their ways and everything else like that.
And so okay, so we're going to take another bite
at that apple and try to go with somebody from
(16:21):
either college and or one of the junior ranks. Again,
I mean, you got to bring somebody in well, I
you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
I think so I just don't want to see the
team go back through recycled NHL coaches that we've been
coaching for twenty years and this is their six you
know spots. You know, there's not a whole lot of
Scottie Bowman's anymore that can hold down a job for
a significant amount of time in one spot and retire
(16:51):
there and build a legacy. Most coaches you know are
here today, gone in the next three seasons.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
That most since that's it the lifetime.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I want to see I don't want somebody else's recycled,
you know, coach or or trash. I want to see
a guy.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Okay, well, let me throw something at you here real quick.
If say the end of the season, and and you know,
like with with uh.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Don't say Rick Tucket.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
I wasn't going to go there, but just hear me
out first when when at the end of the season
in the NFL they call that black Monday, and that's
usually when all the coaches are fired and all the
coordinators are fired and everything else like that. So black
Monday comes for the NHL, right, And if say, Mike
(17:42):
Sullivan's on the list, Okay, I'm just I was just
throwing a name out there, you know, because I've heard
a lot of circulation around that as well as Hey,
if Mike's Holman is going to be available, should probably
look into that. And then I'm going to throw the
other name out there too, the OBUs one Rick talking now.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Amazing player, one of my favorite flyers of all time. Yeah,
but no, thank you to Rick Tackett as a coach.
As a coach, Nope, no thank you. I don't I
like Ian Laperier right where he is.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
I would not I would not want to offer him
no job.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
No no, I think he's good at coaching youth at
that level and developing youth, not taking youth and winning championships. Uh,
as far as NHL level.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
I like you.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
I like Ian m friends, I'm friends with Ian, but uh,
you know, uh, no thank you. I don't want to
fly her. I don't want to ask flyers a coach again.
We've done that in the past. No, thank you.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
I'm with you. Okay, Well, so now we we've come
up with a couple of names, and Lantin even wrote
an article about exactly whom you felt might be some
good candidates, uh for the coaching job that's gonna be
awaiting somebody in Philadelphia. And to be honest, with you.
(19:13):
I gotta say that that looks like that might be
the the sweet job coming up this coming off season.
Because with all of the number one draft picks that
Danny has, the second round draft picks, that he now
has third round draft picks, that he now has the
amount of capital as far as draft capital now, he
(19:33):
also he has some some cap space as well. He's
got some young up and coming talent that you know,
we're gonna talk about here in a minute, that that's
gonna be, you know, coming to the team here shortly.
I mean, that looks like that could be somebody's you know, hey,
the fill up your fends be a great job.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
You know.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
And you got Mitchkoff here, you got connect me here,
you know what I mean, you got those are pretty
much gimme all stars right there, you know what I'm saying.
So all right, let's talk bless you. Let's talk about
exactly with what we were talking about earlier, Lance, and
(20:14):
that's this the fact that even though the season's coming
to an end here for the Flyers, we're seeing some
players really standing out, really coming into their own, really
taking that next step, I think, and I think it's
also partially because of what you said with the Tortorella
veil lifted from this team, and we're talking about Tyson Porser. Man,
(20:38):
I mean, this kid is we When he was coming
out into the draft, we coveted him and we thought, man,
we would really like to see him come on to
the Flyers. And you called it lance in your article,
you called it when we were on the show, and
bang here he was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. And
last year, I mean he did what twenty goals.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Last year, So I means ye had for a leaky
sneaking you know, totals like not every night, but you know,
just put put him up there. But I mean within
the last five games, geez, he's really turned it on. Yeah,
you know, six goals in the last five five games,
(21:20):
a hat trick against the Races. That was that was
awesome to see. Awesome to see. Now. I mean, he's
twenty three years old, he's coming into his own, he's
six foot to two hundred and fifteen pounds, he's filling out.
We're we're finding this guy. I told you when we
drafted him, before we drafted him, that this needed to
(21:42):
be the player because he has an NHL caliber shot
in juniors, which he showed on a nightly basis in juniors.
And now this twenty twenty twenty third overall pick by
the Flyers is really coming into his own quite nicely. Yeah,
with twenty four goals on the season, he has a
(22:03):
shot to hit twenty five. I think that is you know,
the next plateau. Guys, look at it. Twenty goals is nice,
but if you can get twenty five goals a year,
you're starting to be a little bit more respected, you know,
in terms.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Of that fifty sixty point range. Yes, you know what
I mean, that's.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Kind of where I can get there because he's got
forty one points. But he's a goal scorer. He is
a goal scorer. That's what he's own for. So I
mean I applaud him because looking at Philadelphia's lines, I
mean playing with Noah Kates and Bobby Brink and I mean,
although that line is really playing nicely together right now,
(22:42):
having a guy that can score like this and shoot
like this, man, I want to see some other players
come up and maybe a jet Lechenko or somebody coming
up to play with this guy.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Yeah, now you're now you're fuck in mind language. I
gotta tell you something, we were absolutely off the radar
with our with with jet Lachenko. I have been completely
surprised by how good this player has done in his
(23:20):
respective junior league. Now, he hasn't put any goals in
yet here for the Fantoms, but and then I think
it's because he's kind of bouncing around and he's only
been on the on the team for you know, six
or seven games, you know what I mean. So I
really would like to see him play with some talent
(23:40):
and see how he's gonna be play some good, strong
minutes down there in the Fantoms. And I think with
the Fantoms making the playoffs, that's going to give him
an opportunity to do exactly that. And we're going to
get to see just exactly what you're talking about, Lance,
some more fruits of Beverrierre's labor, seeing what jet Lachenko
is going to do. And we're also going to talk
about a couple other plays too, that you know, we
(24:02):
think might be uh, you know, doing all right down there, man,
you know what I'm saying, right, But way to go
to Forrester. And you know, I gotta also be honest
with you too. I think Fodotov has been playing much
better in a couple of games that he's played where
he's been in to start. I think, honestly, I don't
(24:26):
think Ariison can be the number one. I think it's
too much for him. It's it's too many games for him.
I think he needs to be more the backup guy.
I hate to say that, because he's got that dog mentality,
He's got that you know, want to be out there,
(24:47):
you know, all the time mentality. But I much rather
see him as a better player coming in as the
second guy. You know, you know what I'm saying, Lance,
Or are you kind of on that same boat? Or
am I? Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Speaker 2 (25:06):
No? No, I mean I think the same token was
with Carter Hart. You know. I I think he was
a good goaltender. He wasn't elite and on a playoff team,
I think he would be a solid one A type guy.
(25:28):
He's not. He's not a number one guy, and neither
is Ariison. I don't think if that is where you
want to go to, if you want to be at
the bottom with the Buffalo's and the Ottawa's, then sure
this is your guy to do that. He's a goaltender
(25:50):
for sure, He's proven that, but can he carried the
brun of the load? Can he win games by himself
some night? It's like some of these elite goaltenders that
have multiple Stanley Cup rings. No, I don't think he can.
And that's just like the other article I put out recently.
It's the Flyers are still searching for that true number
(26:14):
one goaltender ever since I believe Ron Hextalls retired. I mean,
I think I think they had Bobrowski. They screwed that
up by bringing it FRIZ and pissed Bobrowski off and
signing him to that huge deal, and then they had
they had, they're still paying him till it just doesn't
(26:36):
count against the cap. And then we had Steve Mason,
who did an incredible job, but everybody loved him, and
his numbers were great, and he still could be playing
in the NHL. I mean he's still like maybe thirty
four thirty five something like that where guys are still playing.
(26:58):
But he retired, and shortly after that, I think, you know,
he was traded from here and then just kind of
fell off after that. I think Philadelphia broke him.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
They seem to do that to players, you know, but
then they also seem to have quite a laundry list
of players that you know, can't seem to make it
here in Philadelphia, but go on to put their name
on the cup.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (27:23):
It's like, all right, and the farm team for the
NHL is the Philadelphia Flyers. No, but I think what
what Danny Breyer is doing with Keith Jones is doing
what what what management is doing now is Okay, so
we've we have we're doing a frame off restoration. We're
(27:47):
down to the frame now, right. We we still might
have to knock off a couple of pieces, but we're
pretty much down to the frame now. Okay. So now
that means that there's only one more way to go,
and that is up right, I mean, we get it rebuild.
(28:11):
The fans have been patient. I mean you you have
played to a fan base that has zero to no patients,
and and and I think they've been patient long enough. Okay,
for sure, I think we keep saying this, and I'm
(28:32):
gonna keep going back to this. This needs to be
a watershed year. Man. You need to get to coaching right.
You need to get some of these draft picks, right,
and you need to be putting a team out on
the ice that's gonna be at least sniffing at the
door instead of, you know, scraping the bottom of the barrel.
(28:54):
You understand what I'm saying. You need to be able
to take that those steps forward, and with the draft
pick capital that they have, with with the cap space
they have, lance this has to be that watershed year
as far as I'm concerned, I'm going to keep saying
it until I see it.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
No, I mean, he's he's Danny's put a lot into
this offseason. He's gathered most draft picks for this season,
for this off season. You know, as far as last year,
it's still the verdicts still out on jet Lichenko. Let's
face it, he wanted Ivan Demodof, he wanted to move
(29:37):
up and get him. He didn't. He couldn't. He tried
like heck, but he couldn't. Now we see where Demodolph is.
He's NHL already. He just scored his first goal in
the first game. We had the opportunity to draft Zimbunam,
but we didn't. Defenseman. We traded back that pick in
(30:00):
Minnesota and now Minnesota's got him up and he was
in he was in talks for the Hobie Baker Award
obviously Isaac Coward and ended up winning that. Who didn't
sign with Tampa Bay. So that's another one we could
be going after right now, Danny uh and trying to
(30:21):
use those wealth of draft picks to go get.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Why why would you need a wealth of draft picks?
He doesn't want to sign with that team. I had
to do is offer him a first and the second
round and say I would even.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
Offer him a first because everybody knows he's not going
to sign with them. So here's yep, second and a third.
Start with a second and add pieces to that. But uh,
you know, that's a ready to go NHL player right there.
I don't think he has anything else to prove in
the in c AA. But you know, you go along
(30:53):
with that, and.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
You and uh, you and uh Russ were going back
and forth on that there for little while. Based off
of your comment, you know, and I gotta be honest
with you, Lance, and based off of what Ruff said
that he said there was there's no character issues at all.
He's been watching this guy for a while. I mean,
he is the you know, the prospect master. So I'm
(31:18):
gonna trust what he says, you know when and say
that he doesn't have a problem with him. So you
gotta get Danny, You gotta you gotta kick the tires
on this man. You got to pick up the phone
and at least make the phone.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
Call with Isaac Coward.
Speaker 1 (31:36):
Yeah, that's what I mean, right, you know, come on, man,
this guy is NHL ready, he's already got the body.
What he's six' five two hundred and fifteen pounds or
something crazy like.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
That oh, no he's not six y.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
Five he's like, NO i thought he was maybe six two.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Ice man is Uh now he's a shorter. Guy uh
five eleven, alright, sorry but he's still. Good that's that's
still good. Style he slid if you.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Will The Hubby Baker. AWARD i, mean our Boy Adam
fink was up Or Aden fink was up for. That,
yeah you, know come on, now he had a lot
of points this year in the, games you know WHAT i.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Mean so that's that's my. Thing WHAT i was trying
to get at here Is Danny brears already kind of
messed up a little. Bit let's see how Jet lechenko
comes in next year and if you can really hit
the ground, running because that that was a big. Pick
(32:43):
that was a big pick that The flyers should have hit.
On you also Had Cole eiserman out there who was
in The frozen four as, well and they didn't pick,
him who WHO i kind of.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Liked but, yeah that's who definitely.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Liked this draft is definitely going to have to be spot.
On you gotta hit them all second. Round you gotta
hit them. All you gotta Hit you gotta restock the.
Cupboard you gotta clear out the cupboard whoever's left from you,
know The Chuck fletcher, error and make space for your own.
(33:18):
Guys get guys in to The phantoms and get them
playing the same system that whoever the head coach is
for The flyers is. Running that is key so that
they can be plug and play and come into THE
nhl and not look lost because it's a totally different
system than The.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
PHANTOMS i, mean the dumbest IDEA i ever THOUGHT i
ever heard in my life was the fact that they
didn't care about what system they were running down The
phantoms and it wasn't the same system that they were
running them up in the. Flyers i'm, like, boy that's
a dome. Scratcher can we fix that?
Speaker 2 (33:52):
Please? Yeah you.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
KNOW i MEAN i also think, Too lance that there's
going to be some players that are definitely gonna be
moved as far as when you know this offseason, comes
and that that nature as. Well BUT i want to
talk about exactly what you were talking, about and that's
(34:14):
like The Jett lachenkos and some of the other the
influx of some of the youth that's coming Into. Fantas
by the, way congratulations to The. Fantoms we're making it
to the playoffs in the second season in a. Row
so congratulations To Ian leperier and The High Valley. Phantoms
(34:34):
And i'll tell you, what, folks The phantoms have done
nothing but put on a. DISPLAY i mean they handled.
Hershy the other night it was five to. ONE i
mean you turned around and blinked and it was, like,
whoo five to? One all? Right with the flux of
(35:00):
the of the players coming now to the to The,
fantoms do you know What i'm? Saying and that's exactly
WHAT i want to see with The Jet. LACHENKOS i
want to see him get heavy. MINUTES i want to see,
him try to give him the opportunity to be a major,
(35:22):
contributor especially in the. Playoffs here for the, fanoms, Right
so we're gonna get to see exactly what we. GOT i,
MEAN i think when you look at At, GENDRON i
think we know we got. THERE i, MEAN i think
that guy definitely needs to be considered for the team next,
year you know What i'm. SAYING i also think too
(35:46):
that you also have to look at it At, lecel
even though they put him on waivers so they could
put send him back. Down ali Luk sell is another.
One you gotta you gotta give him some space at
least to see what he's going to. Be.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Like, Well lexell's been called, up you, know over the
past two seasons at, times but hasn't really been able,
to you, know highlight anything in THE. Nhl SO i
think this offseason is going to be huge for.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Him, yeah that's that's kind of What i'm talking, about
you know WHAT i. Mean he has been called up
quite a few, times BUT i don't think he was
he was getting it. Consistently he was just kind of
being like that last guy call up to fill in
for an injured. Guy and it was a couple of
times when he was called up he didn't even. Play, yeah,
sure you know WHAT i. Mean and so that's that's no.
(36:39):
Good if you're being called up and you're not, playing
that's that's No he needs to be, Playing, okay that's
the kind of player you need him to be playing
at all.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Times, WELL i think the same should go With carson De, wert, who,
yeah The flyers signed For Michigan. State not my first.
CHOICE i THINK i would have signed. T. J hughes
From michigan but to play that. Spot but De hort
is playing on the fourth. LINE i, mean you're bringing
(37:11):
this kid, in you're out of the. Playoffs why not
put him with some better players to see what he
can really? Do sticking him on With NICK i, MEAN i,
mean let's face, it he's a he's a, fighter you,
KNOW i don't know so.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
And he did score the other, night you know WHAT i. Mean,
SO i, mean, okay but but but, No i'm with.
You i'm with. You i'd much rather see you, know
him down there playing with uh with The fantoms and
getting used to playing with, him especially with his playoff,
push because to be honest with, YOU i think The
fans have a pretty good shot of making it at
least to the second round this. YEAR i mean they
(37:51):
were close last year of making it to the second,
round you know WHAT i.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Mean, yeah if the season into, today they would be Playing,
PROVIDENCE i. BELIEVE i think The fantoms are ranked fifth right,
now so they would be playing, four which Is providence
in The. Atlantic and you, KNOW i think they pretacked
AND i think both teams are in the same, token
in the same. Situation with The, Bruins they're they're right
(38:20):
there circling and drained with, Us so they're they're gonna
have some young kids playing with them as, well who
are going to be fighting to make the team next.
Year so you, know both guys are both teams are
really really.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Going to be.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Fighting And i'm excited About Nikita griboykin. TOO i think
he's been playing really. Well it's the power for big
bodied power forward The flyers have lacked that they had
so much success with over the. YEARS i, mean your
heart knows Your Wayne, simmons Your Canoe. Bulls why did
(38:55):
we go away from this when we had so much
success with a big power. FORWARD i don't.
Speaker 1 (39:01):
KNOW i mean all you have to do is look
at the last Four Stanley cup winning, teams and they
all have those big guys up. Front and, look we
had a little discussion about the little, Guys lance AND
(39:22):
i did here because you, know we always talk, about you,
know hockey pretty much all the, time but we were talking,
about you, know like the little, guys guys that are you,
know below six, feet and you just don't see a
lot of those types of players with Those Stanley cup winning.
Teams you see more of the bigger guys up front
(39:44):
playing for Those Stanley cup winning. Teams AND i Think
lance here's absolutely. Right they need to do that all
the way around across the, board not just with the,
flyers but with the fantoms as well. Too you need
to stop bringing in these guys that are you, know five,
eight five, nine five. Ten it's okay if you have
(40:04):
one or two of them on the. Team, look every
once in a, while you get That Danny. Briere every
once in a, while you get, that you, KNOW theo.
Flurry every once in a, while you get, that you,
know guy that's a little bit, diminutive and you know
WHAT i. Mean, so but those are so few and
far between, that why you constantly bringing in all these
(40:26):
guys that are that, Size you're you're just setting yourself
up to get run. Over and that's what's. Happened you
see teams that you know have done that to The,
flyers you, know with with that and SO i don't,
KNOW i want to see the team get. Bigger, well
(40:48):
it needs.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
To be bigger with the ability to, Skate, yeah Like
Tyson forrest or somebody like, that you, know get bigger.
Size you, know guys are not the gargantuan ones from
years ago that are just gripping up guys and beating
them to a bloody. Pulp you need some bigger power
(41:12):
like A Tom wilson that can skate and and can
hit and can fight and you, know can do all the. Things.
Yeah but some other NOTABLES i think that The flyers
should look to bring, in, uh since they're in the
process of you, know, rebuilding Is Cole. Knoeble he had
(41:35):
a great year For Notre dame this. Year fourth round
pick in twenty twenty, Three danny's pick And Alex bump
From Western. Michigan they just won The national championship and
The flyers drafted him with a fifth pick in the
twenty twenty two of. Theirs so really really guys that
(41:58):
could come in right now and be playing with phantoms
h and help them.
Speaker 1 (42:02):
Out you know what are you waiting? For you get.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
It get some of these guys that've been in the
system for five or six years out that haven't progressed,
Out get them, out you.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
KNOW i, MEAN i posted this out On twitter the other.
Day next, year this coming, season off, season The flyers
are going to have a, brink a, bunk a, bump
and a, barque, right the killer bees, right and you
(42:38):
match that with A molotov jet. Cocktail oh DID i
just say? That oh, yeah, anyway but you mix that
with jet And mitch Cough oh, man all, right sign
me up for some of. That let's go put them out,
there let's. Go let's. See but all, right we talked
(43:04):
about the influx of, Players we talked about The fantoms
making it to the. Playoffs, LANCE i gotta be honest with, you,
Man I'm i'm ready for this season for The flyers
to be. Over I'm I'm i'm ready for this band
aid to be ripped. Off, Okay i'm ready for the
off season to get started BECAUSE i want to see
the new. COACH i want to see the new power play.
(43:26):
COACH i want to see the, knee the new defensive. Coach,
right can you plead you gotta hit this, One Danny,
Keith you gotta hit this. One you gotta hit on
on your first and second round draft picks this. Year
you gotta hit on. Them whether you package up all
(43:46):
your first round draft picks and trade to get trade
up to get that one, guy to get that you,
Know James, haggins or to get that you, Know roger,
McQueen or you, know whatever you want to. Do or
if you pick wherever you're gonna pick with your first round,
picks use them wisely and get some players that can
come in here and help this. Team, okay you got
(44:09):
some cap. Space this is gonna be a place to
what people are gonna want to come to and coach
and gonna want to come to and, play especially with
the likes Of, mitchkoff with the likes of of Of Tyson,
forrester the likes of you, Know connecting and and such and.
SUCH i think you need to get to that point,
(44:31):
Though and that's WHY i keep saying, that and that's
WHY i keep going back to this has to be
a watershed year for The.
Speaker 2 (44:35):
Fliers, YEAH i mean it could be the end Of. Brier,
SADLY i think he's done pretty well to this. Point but,
he's like you said, earlier he's tore it all. Down
you have your cornerstone piece With. Mischkoff now it's time
(44:57):
to build around. Him, yeah, yeah and really get some
other pieces and and you, know we don't have bad
building blocks with like you, said connect me and you
know other pieces that are here. Already you, know it's
not that horrible of roster With Tyson forrester and some
(45:20):
others coming. Up you have some interesting pieces there that
a coach could, Say, OKAY i COULD i could get
in with, That and you got all these other draft
picks that are up and coming maybe in a year or,
two all, Right LIKE i could get. That it's not
starting from, nothing you, know like When tortorello came, in
he literally came into nothing and made them play last
(45:44):
season like they were, something and unfortunately just the team
wasn't just buying that. Hype this, season uh to recreate.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
That but.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
You, KNOW i think it's it's gonna start with who
he picks for a, coach is he gonna lift the
interim tag and just hand it over To shall and
Keep Rocky thompson there and keep the same goaltending coach In.
Dellabam that's gonna be a. Problem AND i think fans
are gonna be tuned, Out like if if that happens
(46:20):
before any, draft before any free agency, HAPPENS i think
they're gonna they're gonna tune. Out SO i, think like you, Said,
steele he's got to make the right, moves and he's
got to make him quick because at the end of the,
season even even with at the end of some of
these other seasons already, ending you, know for Uh carl In,
(46:45):
denver you, know and sooner rather than later with THE,
ahl for For Todd, nelson like you're gonna have to
make a choice real freaking quick whether this is what
you want to stick with or if you're going to
bring in a whole new. Regime and you should darn
(47:05):
well let them pick their their assistant coaches when they
do come, back BECAUSE i don't think you should hand
Them Rocky thompson and and make them work with.
Speaker 1 (47:18):
That So uh as a coach coming, in that would
be one of my STIPULATIONS i wouldn't have to pick
my own. Assistance, yeah, okay, uh you KNOW i don't
need you to be drafting any guys that are you,
KNOW i don't need Any Alan vigno guys or Be
(47:38):
an e f And flyer and all that other. Stuff
BUT i think with What Danny brier, said even with
What John tortorella, did he set the standard In. Philadelphia
and the standard is is that no matter WHAT i,
think you're going to be held. Accountable so you better
be playing your butt. Off AND i really need a
coach to come in there and continue that, level you
(48:03):
know WHAT i, Mean because if you shy away from,
that now you're NOW i think you're gonna. Regress. You
if you're trying to say that he set the, standard,
okay then keep going with, that but you're gonna need
to bring a guy in who's gonna hold guys. Accountable
and not just The mitchikoffs for making one little silly
(48:27):
mistake and then benching him for a whole. Game you
gotta do the same thing for The Travis konnectneys and
The Sean couturiers and the you know WHAT i, Mean
The sandheims of the of the of the game as well.
Too so if you're gonna hold one player, accountable you
gotta hold them all. Accountable that's What i'm getting, at you.
(48:48):
Know AND i think The flyers still need that tough
coach THAT i don't. Know i'm Not i'm not trying
to use the, cliche, hey but they do need A
Peter loviolette esque type coach to try, to you, know
come in here and and and hold the reins of these.
(49:11):
Kids and and with what the coaches you're talking about
to come in, here with The Todd nelson's and such
to bring in who have already held the rains of those.
KIDS i don't. Know that's WHERE i think it's gonna
be the make or break whoever he brings in his,
coach and then whatever he does with those draft. Picks,
lance this is gonna be make or, BREAK i think for.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
Them by the start of next, season the first, game
regular season, game we're gonna know if this franchise has
moved mountains to get, better like like they have the
chance to with the cap, space with you, know free,
agency with you, know the, draft with how how many
(49:58):
draft picks we have in this draft and with the
start with the new. Coach by the game, one we're
going to be able to see if this team is
going to be contenders or. Pretenders AND i hope it's not.
PRETENDERS i hope so. Too AND i WATCH i want
(50:21):
to watch. GAME i want to enjoy watching games, again
not just doing it BECAUSE i do a podcast and
write about the, team.
Speaker 1 (50:29):
You, know, Right, Like, HEY i want to go watch
The flyers game tonight BECAUSE.
Speaker 2 (50:32):
I wanted it to feel like, homework you know WHAT i?
Speaker 1 (50:35):
Mean? Yeah? Right you know you're supposed to enjoy your.
Job it's not just a, job it's a it's an. Adventure.
Right BUT i will say, this look for some coverage
For lance AND i at The phantoms on playoff. Game
so any home playoff game that they, have we will
(50:55):
be there to cover The. Phantoms so that should be really.
Exciting so looking forward to. That, lance you got anything
in the, Works.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
