(00:05):
Welcome to the Hollywood in Total podcast, entertainment news and reviews without the book
Hollywood Narrative, free speech, freeexpression. Now that's entertainment, and here's
your host, a born winning filmcritic persian Total. Willie Nelson got an

(00:29):
odd gift for his ninetieth birthday ninetycandles. Wow. Then again, what
do you get a music legend whohas everything you could possibly want? I'm
assuming it includes a mountain of potnisttouring bus Well, the country music superstar
got entry into Rock and Roll Hallof Fame. Huh. I don't think
there's a sane argument against Willie Nelson'slegend status. Did the Hall's voters need

(00:53):
another year of him above ground tosay, oh yeah, I think it's
time. Did they miss his decadesworth of songs and tours and collaborations?
And by the way, isn't hea country singer not a rock and roll
star? It's absurd. All ofit is absurd. But then that's what
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fametoday is. The hall, which officially

(01:14):
opened its doors in ninety five,is meant to honor rock legends, but
with the years they've expanded that definitionto include some songs and some musicians who
really don't qualify as rock. Thisyear's nominees include Willie Nelson, of course,
Missy Elliott, Shaka Khan, andSoul Trains Don Cornelius. Do any

(01:34):
of those names scream rock and rollto you, you don't to me.
You can argue the pros and consof each of them. For them musical
merits, what they've had an impacton the culture, but queers some consistency,
and Don Cornelius is show should hehelp riding stars and played a role
in musical culture? I get that, and I could understand the arguments,
But Chaka Khan seems an odd choicegiven that so many rockers, classic rockers

(01:57):
people really have a great legacy.Well, they're still waiting for their golden
tick into the Hall. I thinkBad Company, Jethro Tull, and the
Smith's just a very short list.To me, it gets worse. I
can't let this one go. BonJovi, the band that gave birth to
Bad Medicine, maybe the worst songever. They're enshrined in the Hall of

(02:21):
Fame. Iron Maiden not so much. And think a more embarrassing case of
exclusion comes with the Prefab four.Yeah, the Monkeys, they remained uninvited
into the hall, despite I wouldsay a sizeable impact on pop music and
beyond. Now the Faux band becamea real band, and a very short
period of time, they reportedly outsoldthe Beatles at their peaked. There's some

(02:42):
arguments there, but they obviously soldan a ton of records, and of
course they've enjoyed musical rebirths in theeighties and they're more recently the twenty Tents
and their wacky TV show only twoseasons, but pretty good stuff. Built
in the Beatles legacy, that visuallegacy that was so important, and you
can't argue against the connection between MTVand what the Monkeys did. They were

(03:04):
ahead of their time, no doubt. Listen, I don't even know as
to act like a woman. Ohwell, that's a cinch. I have
heard this book how to Act likea Feminine Female and three easy lessons.
Lesson one, all feminine females mustlearn to walk with small, delicate steps.

(03:24):
Not so good. I think webetter get a shorter rope. Yeah,
right, shorter rope. Oh,I think I just got the Monkeys
canceled on. I didn't mean to, but but let's go back to what
matters here the songs. So manyperfect pop songs from the Monkeys, including
Glass Train, the Clarksville, DaydreamBeliever, Sometime in the Morning, I'm

(03:44):
a Believer, Shades a Gray,a personal favorite, and Pleasant Valley Sunday.
In case you missed Women Talking, which was not a great film but
certainly got a lot of accolades. They popped in Daydream Believer in the middle
of that movie in a very evocativesequence the movie. The songs still matter,
of course. You can also lookat some of the deep cuts of
the Monkeys. Excellent songs there too, but no invitation to the Hall as

(04:09):
of yet. The same holds truefor the Indigo Girls. They've got some
killer tracks, some wonderful albums,They've been a beloved touring act for decades,
still going strong, and yet theyalso stand outside the Cleveland Hall Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame, waitingfor their ticket. You have more names
for in Zevon Soundgarden, Joy Division. They're all excluded to this point two.

(04:30):
I don't know if it'll ever happenfor them. Maybe the Hall voters
are pulling a Willie Nelson. They'rewaiting for each of those singers to turn
about ninety ish. Of course thathurts Zevon because he passed away in two
thousand and three at the age offifty six, so I'm not going to
help him at all. Rock andRoll Hall of Fame chairman John Sikes in
a way accidentally spilled the beans whenhe spoke to the Far Left Variety about

(04:50):
this year's inductees. Here's what hesaid. Sometimes it takes a major moment
like Willie's ninetieth birthday, or,in the case of Kate music being played
in stranger things to shine a lighton them. For a lot of the
younger people who didn't know who shewas in nineteen eighty five, they probably
weren't even born yet. Good thingNelson lived to be ninety, otherwise his

(05:13):
entire body work would have been ignored. And by the way, mister Sikes,
do we really want to cater tothe people who haven't been born yet?
Or do we want to look tothe excellent music, the legacies,
the songs. The cultural impact doesnot seem more important to the fact that
someone on TikTok didn't hear of KateBush or even Willie Nelson. God forbid,
it's embarrassing now I think it's areal good comparison to be made here

(05:38):
with the Baseball Hall of Fame.It is special, it is revered,
it is beloved, and I thinkin large part because it is so hard
to get in. Some of thebest players in the recent generations, including
Kurt Schilling and Don Mattingly, theyhaven't made the cod yet. Of course,
the former's political positions clearly play arole and the reason why he's standing

(05:58):
outdoors of that particular institution. They'vestraight up said so, according to Shilling
himself, the people that have notvoted for me specifically because of the things
I've said or did, and they'vesaid it. They've come out and said
I can't vote for him because ofwhat he said or what he did.
And other baseball giants excluded from theHall think Lou Whittaker, Del Murphy,

(06:20):
Dwight Evans great players. But thatmeans getting a Hall pass is something significant
to the culture and the sport. It's why all those big grown men tear
up when they're giving their acceptance speeches. It really does matter that the musicians
who make the Hall cut. Idon't think that honor means much to them
or anyone else. At this point, and I think that helps explain why

(06:42):
we have some inductee no shows inrecent years, including Paul McCartney, Axel
Rose, David Bowie, and threefifths of Van Halen. That's a lot
of Van Halen to be a noshow. To quote Bill Murray and the
classic cam comedy Meatballs, it justdoesn't matter. But you know what,
when I'm learning it does matter. It matters to music fans. I wrote

(07:04):
a piece at Hollywood intoto dot comabout the current Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductees and guess what I hadlots and lots of passionate responses. I
want to share a couple of themhere. Here's one. It didn't take
long for this rock and Roll Hallof Fame to get watered down tremendously.

(07:25):
Here's another. It's the woke mobagain with their stupid reimagining, repurposing,
and virtue signaling by insecure and neuroticloaners. Translated, I mean censorship and
trying to delete whatever they don't likein history that includes music artists. Let's
put this rock and Roll Hall inthe same trash bin as the Academy Awards,
because that's what it's become. Ithink this one's my favorite comment.

(07:47):
Iron Maidens should make it on theirconcert shirt design alone. Ridiculous. I
think that person's got a point. But you know what, let's let the
birthday boy Willie Nelson have the lastword on the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame because people are beginning to seethat it's not as horrible as they once
were taught that it was okay.He was actually talking about pot legislation of

(08:09):
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But I think the more years go
by with these rock and Roll Hallof Fame gaffs, the less even heartcare
fans are gonna care. I hopeyou're enjoying these bonus episodes. More will

(08:33):
be on the way. But twoquick items before we sign off. One,
please go to iTunes, Apple andsubscribe to this podcast or just tell
a friend. It really does matter. It does help, and it gets
the message out that there's not justa left leaning audience hungry for Hollywood content.
It's across the board and people fromthe heartland, people on the right,

(08:54):
deserve a show like this. Secondly, this might be the most amazing
exchange you'll hear in quite some time. This is firing line with Margaret Hoover.
The guest is Richard Dreyfuss, theOscar winning actor who has a pension
for saying things he's not supposed tosay. It doesn't mean they're wrong,

(09:16):
he's just not allowed to say them, at least many actors aren't. But
he does this back and forth willshock you. It is wonderful. He
may end up apologizing for what hehas to say here, but a hope
he doesn't. Hope more actors saythe exact same thing, because at the
end of the day, while Hollywoodis a commercial institution, as he admits,

(09:37):
it's also art and what he's sayingis absolutely spot on. Enjoy this
and I'll see you next time.Starting in twenty twenty four, films will
be required to meet new inclusion standardsto be eligible for the Academy Awards for
Best Picture. They'll have to havea certain percentage of actors or crew from

(09:58):
under rappers on a racial and ethnicgroups. What do you think of these
new inclusion standards for films? Theymake me vomit? Why Because this is
an art form. It's also aform of commerce, and it makes money.

(10:18):
But it's an art and no oneshould be telling me as an artist
that I have to give in tothe latest most current idea of what morality
is and what are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people's feelings.

(10:45):
You can't legislate that, and youhave to let life be life. And
I'm sorry. I don't think thatthere's a minority or a majority in the
country that has to be catered tolike that.
