Speaker 1 (00:00):
If you've ever felt like the modern world is collapsing
around you, morally, spiritually, culturally, well, Father Sara from Rose
actually predicted all of this, and he left us a
roadmap on how we got here. For the next project

(00:31):
over at the Logos Academy, I'm excited to announce now
we are going to be reading one of the more
important Orthodox texts of our time, father Sarah from Rose,
is the Orthodox Survival Course, and together we're going to
be looking at the forces that shape modernity, how people
are so spiritually lost, and why Orthodoxy is the only

(00:52):
path forward. For those you've never heard of it, The
Orthodox Survival Course is actually a collection of lectures that
Father Sarah from Rose gave concerning the intellectual historical journey
of the West and essentially how they departed from the
front of the mindset the worldview of Eastern Orthodoxy. Here
is the Orthodox Survival Course. It's as I said, it's

(01:14):
a collection of lectures from Father Sarah from Rose, and
it begins discussing what the Orthodox worldview is, and from
there he begins with the Middle Ages, specifically in the West,
and marches from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance to
the Enlightenment to the scientific Revolution, through the French Revolution,

(01:35):
all this different stuff and demonstrates how it contributes to
the modern period that we're in and why our traditional
Christian faith has essentially been under attack for centuries. If
you reside in a Western country, you're living in a
society that's filled with cultural chaos, that has no identity,

(01:56):
or being flooded with immigrants, and there's no religious foundations
for anybody to latch onto. There's been a loss of meaning.
You've heard Pagio and Peterson and Verbaiki and all these
different intellectuals speak about the meaning crisis. Well, how did
we get here? Why is there no meaning? Why is
nihilism such a common denominator amongst so many young people

(02:18):
and their inability to find their careers, establish themselves and
build families. Or the temptations of modernity, of individualism, of rationalism,
of democracy. Why are these things such central pillars and
almost religious proclamations in the Western world, Or the sex
of the spiritual exhaustion. So many people have been seekers

(02:41):
over and over again, where they've adopted a sort of
perennial worldview where all religions lead to the same place.
It's all one shared perennial truth, but is it true?
And then the confusion over Orthodoxy's role today, What is
the role of Orthodox Christianity in the West. These are
the things that we're going to be discussing. And Father

(03:02):
Sarah from Rowe gives the Orthodox blueprint on how to
stay sane, how to save your soul, and strengthening your
household in the age of apostasy. To get the most
out of this text, it's really not something that you
should read alone. It's helpful to have other people's perspective
and backgrounds, especially if you're not sophisticated in intellectual history, philosophy,

(03:24):
or historical movements. That's why we're going to be doing
this as a community of men. We're gonna be meeting
at seven o'clock pm Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday nights,
all of which will be posted on the calendar over
at the Logos Academy at school dot com, and we
then are going to discuss this and hold each other accountable.
We're gonna be diving deep into each chapter. Sometimes we're

(03:47):
going to be reading a chapter or two, and we're
going to then share our perspectives as a group and
where maybe you lack knowledge in certain areas other people
in the group are much more attuned to. So that's
the point of doing this as a collection of Orthodox
Christian men. When you join the Logos Academy, you're not
just getting access to the exclusive think tank meetings where

(04:09):
we're going to be reading the Orthodox Survival Course. Of course,
you're going to get that, but you also get all
the study guides and reviews that I prepare, You get
all of my members only content, you get banned YouTube streams,
you get all my part two streams, and you get
a collection of other men like minded that you can
bounce ideas off and belong to a community of men

(04:31):
striving for something larger. We do the first Monday of
every month Fitness Accountability meetings where we grade ourselves a
through f on your fitness, your diet, your spiritual life,
which includes church attendance, prayer, life scripture reading, and then
career goals or lifestyle goals whatever it may be for
your situation. So you get a lot more than just

(04:54):
being part of the zoom meetings for the reading of
the Orthodox Survival Course, all of which is going to
be included in your membership. If you want to be
there for the first meeting, sign up today. As I said,
we're going to beginning the first two lectures, the first
one on the Orthodox worldview the second one on the
Middle Ages this Wednesday, December seventeenth at seven o'clock pm

(05:15):
Eastern Standard time. And all of these sessions are going
to be recorded, so if you're not able to make
one of them, there will be a playlist in the
classroom section on school dot com in the Logos Academy
where every single meeting covering this text will be available.
So if you make a couple of them, but maybe
you miss one, you'll also be able to tune in
and see what we have to say as a group

(05:36):
of men when we go over it. The times are dark,
but God is not silent, and Father Sarah from Rose
wrote this for us for our exact moment. So join
us over at the Logos Academy school dot com forward
slash Logos Academy and let's read it together.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; โ€œHe paid me to do it.โ€ David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a โ€œliveโ€ investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was Davidโ€™s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, โ€œbrokeโ€ her.โ€ The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run โ€œTrying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.โ€ Thatโ€™s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the howโ€ฆ and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentinaโ€™s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one womanโ€™s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as โ€œThe Corner on Blood.โ€ The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didnโ€™t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one manโ€™s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someoneโ€™s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the directorโ€™s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. โ€œThe Hulkโ€ was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But thatโ€™s all heโ€™d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. โ€œThe guilty have gone free,โ€ he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
