Speaker 3 (00:28):
We thought of that before you. My I wish that
I could fly in through the scar so very high,
just like a dragonfly, fly.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
About the tree at over the sea, in the cret
anywhere up.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
Welcome to the Long for Truth Podcast. I'm Robin Long.
Join my husband Dan and I as we explore the
roots of the early Pentecostal and Charismatic movements and we
shine a light on false doctrines and false teachers in
the modern church. Let's get started, Bond.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
I'm afraid we have an unexpected guest. Her name is
Annelie Lockwell, also known as Agent w. D.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
Forty.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Be careful, she's known to be very slick. She can't
know your ento, Bond. You've been playing the game long
enough so you know the rules. Don't make it personal.
Speaker 6 (03:06):
What is up Church by the Glades?
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Hello?
Speaker 6 (03:10):
Everyone, Welcome along for Truth. My name is Daniel Long,
and sitting next to me is my lovely wife Robin.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Hi.
Speaker 6 (03:15):
Everyone, love saying that and miss saying that. Great to
have Robin back.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Very good to be back with you.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
And by the way, thank you for all of your
kind comments. We do read the comments, by the way,
and thank you very much for all the kind comments
asking about Robin. That always warms my heart.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
It does.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
I appreciate it and I'm doing very well. Thank you
for asking.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
Today we're going to be talking about worship. We're going
to be asking the question what is biblical worship? And
we're going to compare that to what we see and
a lot of well megachurches, and we've done several megachurch videos.
This one's going to be focused particularly.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
On worship we have and I think we're honing in
on megachurches because you can find so much footage out
there on them. This doesn't just happen in megachurches. It
happens in small and medium churches across America and what
they consider to be worship and compare it to what
God's words says is worship.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
Absolutely. Let's go ahead and look at you had a
definition that you wanted to share.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
I did, and this is from God Questions. If you
ever have any kind of a biblical question, it's a
really great website to start your search. They have a
lot of great biblical information there. So they state a
simplified definition of worship can be stated as a continual
heart attitude of bowing down in reverence and humility before
the Supreme Lord and creator of the universe. Worship is
(04:42):
the heartbeat of the believer's existence, a lifelong celebration of
the worthiness of God. To worship is to respond with
one's whole being in adoration, exaltation, humble submission, and obedience
to God.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
And if you go through the Bible, and we did
that when we were prepping for this video and we
just looked at the topic of worship, there is a
lot even in the New Testament that talks about worship. Now,
the Old Testament is just filled with it.
Speaker 7 (05:09):
We know that.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
But I love what Jesus says worship is in John.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
Chapter four, John four, twenty three, and twenty four. But
the hour is coming and is now here when the
true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.
For the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship
in spirit and truth.
Speaker 6 (05:35):
So Robin is worship regulated to just a church service.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
It is not, obviously, So when we talk about worship today,
we're talking about what happens inside of a church service.
But you know, worship is a constant, It should be
a constant in our lives.
Speaker 7 (05:55):
It is.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
And just one of the things that I think is
really difficult for people in general, human beings in general,
especially in Christians, to get is that God, God does
not need our worship. Worship is not for God, it's
for us. Really, God doesn't need it. And I love
what Acts seventeen twenty four through twenty five says about that.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
It says, the God who made the world and everything
in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not
live in temples made by man, nor has he served
by human hands as though we needed anything, since He
himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
So, you know, worship, like I said, is for us.
It's a response to what God has done and is
doing for us. But worship is also part of our
daily lives too, just the fact that we live holy
in godly lives, that is a form of worship as well.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Absolutely Romans twelve one and two. I appeal to you there,
for brothers, by the mercies of God, to press your
bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual worship, do not be conformed to
this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
that by testing you may discern what is the will
(07:15):
of God and what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Speaker 7 (07:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
So presenting our bodies to God as a living sacrifice
is our spiritual worship. And you can go through the
New Testament epistles and it just lays it out beautifully
how we do this, how we live the Christian lives
and so, yeah, worship is not just about a church service.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
It isn't. But when we go to a church service,
we definitely go there to worship as a community. It's
corporate worship. We're worshiping together. When you go to some
(07:58):
of these modern churches. What are you finding in the
first area we wanted to look at was the worship music? Yeah,
is it actually worshipful?
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (08:08):
So we've got a few clips we're going to play
back to back for you and you let us know
if this is something that honors got exactly.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Now. This particular portion that you're going to see is
from North Point. It's Andy Stanley's Church and it's a
little medley the group put together for a Sunday morning
worship service.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
We received a copyright claim from the music in this clip,
so we're just going to tell you the names of
the songs that North Point Church played. The first one
was Happy Together by the Turtles, the second one was
You're My Best Friend by Queen, and then the third
one was We Are Family by Sister Sledge.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
So it's like feel good Sunday with Andy Stanley. I
guess I don't know what's worse actually playing that music
or when they take a really ungodly song and change
the lyrics and try to make it godly.
Speaker 8 (09:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
It's speaking in tongue's song.
Speaker 6 (09:11):
That was I remember that Michael tune. Oh no, it
wasn't to George Michael. It was to Culture Club. Yes,
how did it go? It went something like yob.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Speaking in tongues every day?
Speaker 6 (09:27):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Shab, I have a kind of mama cover.
Speaker 9 (09:30):
I'm speaking ties, we speaking ties, were speaking tes.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Shabi have a kana mama cover am speaking.
Speaker 10 (09:43):
We speaking ties.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
You will mistrall.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
When you think of worship, it should obviously lift our
hearts to the Lord, to the Lord, and none of
in none of those songs. And you correct me if
your heart was exalting God during that music. You let
us know in the comments, but we were comparing that
to some of the beautiful, beautiful lyrics that you can
(10:11):
hear in some of the hymns we sing at church. Yeah,
and let's just read the first verse of great is
Thy faithfulness, Oh God, my Father, there's no shadow of
turning with thee. Thou changest not thy compassions. They fail,
not as thou hast been, that forever will be. Great
is thy faithfulness. Great is thy faithfulness, morning by morning
(10:34):
new mercies. I see. All I have needed, Thy hand
is provided. Great is thy faithfulness Lord, unto me, you know.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
And I understand that there are some good contemporary songs,
worship songs or hymns that are written. I get that,
But man, there is nothing like the old hymns. They
are so solid. The Allah, and we listen to a Him,
(11:03):
or we sung him not last week but the week
before last at church, and the words, boy did they
bring tears to the eyes. They're just so theological. Yeah,
so solid.
Speaker 8 (11:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:17):
So the hymn is called today your mercy calls us,
and this is what this is how it goes today,
Your mercy calls us to wash away our sin. However
great our trespass. Whatever we have been, however long from
mercy our hearts have turned away, Your precious blood can
(11:37):
wash us and make us clean today. What a beautiful
I mean compare that to we are family. I mean,
come on, anyway, I digress. The point is there are
I get it. There are some some strong worship songs
that are written, have been written recently, but there's.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Just nothing on one of them. Vodi Baca mentions this
because it's one of his favorite hymns. Is in Christ alone.
That's a great I thought with an older hymn, and
then I looked it up and it was written in
the year two thousand or something like that. It's very contemporary, beautiful,
beautiful lyrics. So share with us in the comments some
of your favorite hymns of or some of the lyrics
that just really touch your heart and cause you to
(12:21):
worship the Lord.
Speaker 6 (12:22):
And when you do a study on music in scripture,
just go go into your Bible, and just if you've
got an electronic Bible, you can search music and just
look at what the Bible says about music. It is
just their music is extremely important and We've got a
few passages that talk about.
Speaker 5 (12:44):
Music Ephesians five, eighteen and nineteen. And do not get
drunk with wine, for that is debauchery. But be filled
with the spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord
with your heart Colossians three sixteen. Let the Word of
Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another
(13:07):
in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
So the Bible addresses how we even in are not
not just in a worship service like we were talking
about earlier, but in our own hearts on a daily basis,
we're singing or making melody. So music is extremely important.
So when you put garbage music in your in your
church service, how is that in any way, shape or
(13:36):
form going to benefit you or benefit anyone that's that's
partaking in that.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
And you know, we've just touched on kind of the extremes,
just singing worldly songs that have nothing to do with
the Lord and comparing those to old hymns. But then
you take all this music like the Bethel music with
Hillsong music goodness that is created in order to worship,
(14:03):
but it doesn't really speak a lot about biblically about
the Lord.
Speaker 6 (14:09):
Well, they there is some you know, there's one of
the whole reasons that Bethel music exists is to bring
people into the teaching of Bethel Church. I mean they
use their music as of money vehicle. Yeah, but they
use it as a vehicle. They've even said that specifically
(14:33):
that Bethel music is used as a vehicle to bring
people into the teachings of Bethel, kind of like.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
A branding thing. Yeah, absolutely, yeah, yeah, So that's one
aspect of a church service that Lord willing will lead
you to worship the Lord. One of the things that
these big churches do, and we haven't even mentioned, Danny,
the fact that why are they doing this, Well, they're
doing this to bring outsiders into the church. So they're
(15:04):
doing this not necessarily to worship God, but to draw
unbelievers into their church.
Speaker 6 (15:12):
We want unbelievers to come to church, but church is
not meant for unbelievers. It's not meant for pagans. Church
is meant for the body to grow, the body, to
build up the body of Christ. The scriptures make that
perfectly clear. The purpose of the church is for the body.
(15:33):
Now again, we welcome unbelievers, We want unbelievers to come in,
but we should not design or build our church services
around unbelievers because that's that is not what church is for.
They hate God anyway, They're under God's wrath, they're born
(15:55):
dead and trespasses and sins, and they are enemies of God.
They hate him, and so to you know, to build
your whole service around the lost to please man exactly,
it's just it's just not something that's going to work.
You're going to have to continue to cater your services
(16:16):
around them in order to keep bringing them in. It's
just not something that the Bible commands us to do.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
And when I think of catering a service around a
human being instead of a lord the Lord, I think
of Aaron and the Israelites when Moses went up on
the hill on the mountain to speak with the Lord,
and they were bored, so they did something to please themselves,
(16:45):
and that was created Golden Calf, and it all went
downhill from there, it did very quickly. So another aspect
of a church service is going to be especially around
the holidays, a good holiday production. Like, I'm sure you've
been to a church. You've had a nice Christmas service
(17:07):
where there's either a cantata or there's a little Christmas
play or an Easter play. Now, some of these people
are going way crazy. Is that a good way to
put it?
Speaker 6 (17:17):
That's a good way, way crazy, very way crazy.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
Way out there people, way out there. The first one
we want to show you is David Crank's church performing
a Grinch production.
Speaker 9 (17:32):
Unfortunately, we received a copyright claim from this clip, so
we borrowed some music from Epidemic Sound and put that
in place of here Comes Santa Claus, which is what
was actually being sung here at David Crank's church.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
That's so frosty, Snowman, it's allow around town. Watch up
Rainy found down with them, Wade and for Seitude night.
He climbed down the sham. They had the speed out
of line while and dancing around the Christmas treet getting.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Kids and just you Andvy.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
Camel is a thing. Enough comments. I think it speaks
for itself. Nothing speak for nothing, not speak of the Lord.
Although I can tell you in that performance, the Grinch
does go backstage and someone says that the woman talking
(18:39):
to him tells somebody needs Jesus, so there.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
Is Wow, that's so wonderful.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
Yeah, it was lovely, lovely performance.
Speaker 6 (18:47):
Yeah, now this they do. Now, there's nothing wrong with
doing that, like Rob was talking about in the beginning,
cantatas or you know Christmas productions, things like that. But
you know when you please bring in like the crunch,
and I mean it's I have no words. I mean,
(19:11):
I'm trying to look at this clip and think of
what can I say about this? But it's so bad
that what can you say? Just pastors don't do it
and don't do it.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
At this point you're thinking it's not even just to
attract outsiders, it's to entertain the insiders. And so then
we move on to Transformation Church.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
Well, let me say something about this next clip really quickly.
This is Michael Todd's church, Transformation Church. Now we have
played this clip. This will be the third time on
our channel, yes, that we've played this clip. So I
don't think you can find it on there. I don't think.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you
can find it on Michael Todd's or on Transformation Church's channel.
(19:58):
I think you have to search around for it. But
this is a clip that we've played multiple times, and
if you have, I'm sure you've seen it. But if
you haven't seen it, this is one of the worst
Easter productions I have ever seen. And I've seen some
Megachurch Easter productions, but this is the absolute most blasphemous, worse.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Easter production, Janny. But we do have another one coming
up that is just as horrible. But this is kind
of like Broadway Hamilton meets the Bible kind of thing.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
So let's watch.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
Kingdom and until you'll see how I take the right
to say, don't eat them.
Speaker 8 (21:17):
Hey, how does rapper out of held you jealousy on
the cn aka a big grain because I'm begetting that schmoey,
you are.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Shod me out.
Speaker 11 (21:27):
I'm taking some money.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
I think I'm getting so much money.
Speaker 8 (21:35):
The thought back, same jump, same jack, same jock shot
eight ninety get too money?
Speaker 6 (21:56):
All right, Robin, what do you think I don't have
to say about that?
Speaker 5 (22:01):
Yeah, it's horrifying to think bad enough that it's it's
a clip, but horrible to think that this is a
church service somewhere.
Speaker 6 (22:09):
Yeah, and look, this is not going to reach people
for Christ. I'm sorry, it just is not. You might
get outsiders, you might get non Christians into your church
for your production, but it's not going to keep them.
It's not going to it's not it's not going to
(22:30):
keep them in church. You're gonna have to in order
to keep the like we said earlier, in order to
keep Pagans in church, you're gonna have to up the
game all the time. And to be honest with you,
this kind of stuff is cringe. It's not even even
though I get it. There's some good musicians in some
of these megachurches, but the stuff that they do is
(22:54):
just cringe.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
How are we in the world but not of the world?
Speaker 7 (22:58):
Right?
Speaker 5 (22:58):
If we are in the world and we're trying to
be just like the world to attract the world.
Speaker 6 (23:03):
It doesn't and it doesn't attract the world, It really doesn't.
Paul makes it clear in Romans chapter one that the
power of salvation is the preaching of the Gospel. And
you're not going I mean, you can act worldly, and
you can do worldly productions in order to try to
(23:23):
draw a crowd, but that's not going to save them.
The Gospel, the preaching of Christ, is what is going
to save a person and to change a person's life.
You were just saying before we watch the transformation clip,
because I said, that's the most blasphemous clip, and I
(23:44):
forgot about that, forgot all about No, this is the
worst I have ever seen.
Speaker 5 (23:50):
I take it back by Church of the Rock in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
which is a church that is known for putting on
is it comic book struments, is or any kind of
crazy Easter performance every single year they come up with
a wild performance.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Yeah, and they are. They are a word of faith,
prosperity gospel church. And they have no problem you know,
saying that if you look at go on their website
and you look at what they believe and what they
talk about, they they Yeah, they're their word of faith.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
So here's an iron Man rendition of the Crucifixion.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
You know, iron Man, I may have missed the point,
but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. It's
the ends of the world as we know it. It's
the ins all the world as we know it. It's
(25:06):
the and all the world as we know it.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
I feel far.
Speaker 10 (25:15):
I get knocked down, but I'll get up again.
Speaker 8 (25:18):
You're never gonna.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Keep me down.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
I see, you have to ask yourself, are they serious
about this? I mean, do they really think that this
is good? Like this is a good production.
Speaker 5 (25:40):
I don't know. I don't know what they think.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
I don't either, But now I got black Sabbath, iron man,
and I'm probably not going to.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
Get it out the rest of the day swimming right now. Yeah,
and again, we're just gonna read a couple verses about
why we are going to church and what worship truly
is Galatians one ten, For am I now seeking the
approval of Man or of God? Or am I trying
to please Man? If I were still trying to please Man,
I would not be a servant of Christ And one
(26:09):
Corinthians fourteen forty. But all things should be done decently
and in order.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
And yeah, yeah, folks, this lends yeah right, yeah, yeah,
I mean that. And that's why we take breaks sometimes, folks,
because we're just like, oh, you know that the brain
needs to be re just we just need to wash
that stuff out of our head. Welcome to our no series,
(26:41):
all right, So now we are going to move on
to gimmicky sermons and gimmicky Sermons series, right.
Speaker 5 (26:47):
Right, anything to attract the outsiders or keep entertaining the insiders.
And the problem is Danny sometimes, you know, these churches
can preach the gospel, but sometimes it becomes such a
minor part of the entire worship service most you really
have to dig for it.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
Yeah, and I'll be honest watching a lot of these sermons,
their presentation of the gospel is just maybe mentioning Jesus
and his and his death. But a lot of times
it's all about how good you know, how much God
wants you and just has a purpose for you, you know,
(27:27):
purpose for your life, and you've got to come to
Jesus so you can find out what your purpose is.
It's not there's not much talk about sin and God's
wrath and why we need a savior.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
It is about what God is going to do for you.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
Yeah, it's about using Jesus as the stepping stone to
get what you want.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
That is a good way to put it. So in
our first clip, we are at the Church by the
Glades in Florida and they're going to use a very
popular TV show to set off their series.
Speaker 10 (27:59):
Yeah, CBG is doing GT We are doing the Bible's
Game of Thrones and man, some.
Speaker 6 (28:08):
Churches would not do that. Some pastors would not approach this.
They probably a better judgment than me.
Speaker 10 (28:13):
But we are that kind of church. We've don't endeavor
to be provocative. The reason I've chosen to do a
Bible's Game of Thrones are two.
Speaker 6 (28:22):
Reason Number one.
Speaker 10 (28:23):
Is this HBO series has been immensely popular. Unless you're
living under a rock, it's been all the news in
recent months. There are people who are crazy fans. So
I don't watch the show. I'm not endorsing the show,
but man, I'm gonna use the show. And so I've
been out inviting people. You guys have a picture of
the invite card. It's not even the slides you can
find one. I've been getting all these invite cards and
(28:45):
people have been cracking up because it says the Bible's
Game of Thrones, and it says in the bottom the
scripture says all the intrigue, drama and none of the nudity.
Of people have been laughing. So it's great to invite them.
And so there's someone in your life you've invited a
church and they've said no. They've said no time and
time again because they have no interest in church. And
no interest in God.
Speaker 7 (29:03):
But they're a big time Game of Thrones fan.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
And so you circle up.
Speaker 10 (29:08):
Given one of these were doing the Game of Thrones,
here we have we have the Iron Throne on the stage.
Speaker 6 (29:13):
David might let you say it, probably not. So he
doesn't endorse or promote Game of Thrones. He just does
a sermon series on it. And that's not endorsing it
at all, is it.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
So it's like I wouldn't watch that R rated movie,
and I wouldn't tell anyone to watch that R rated movie,
but Gold to do a certain series on base our
sermons on that R rated movie. That's basically what he's saying.
Speaker 6 (29:36):
Yeah, and I don't understand. These guys are supposed to
be pastors and they cannot see the sinfulness and the
wickedness in doing these kinds of things.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
Is not the gospel provocative enough? He said, We endeavor
to be provocative, And if you are going, if you
could strip away all of your worldliness and preach the
gospel from God's word, that is provocative.
Speaker 6 (29:59):
You tell people you are a sinner, God is angry
with you and you need to be saved, and you
watch the reaction of people that Yeah, that's provocative. I
mean the gospel, you know, the gospel is what brings persecution.
The preaching of the biblical gospel is what causes persecution,
(30:22):
you know that part it does. It does along with
living a godly life. By the way, Paul says, those
who would live a godly life in Christ Jesus will
suffer persecution. But that's all because of the gospel.
Speaker 5 (30:36):
Absolutely. Another famous famous church that did this at what
time was Saddleback and they did their summer at the movies.
And we have that intro movies are the story of
our day.
Speaker 11 (30:49):
So when we understand certain movies why they resonate so
deeply and are watched by billions of people, it's so
good for us because it's kind of like holding up
a mirror to examine the human excs, experience, perspectives that
people carry and really what we deeply long for. You know,
Jesus himself was a master storyteller, constantly telling stories, and
(31:12):
he would integrate those stories into his teaching and then
use them to point us back to God, back to
God's unchanging character and his eternal word. And that's what
we'll be doing with this series. So we'll explore for
well known movies, and we'll do it through the lens
of the Bible. And then as we do that, we'll
apply some of the movie's lessons to our own lives.
(31:32):
Toy Story four, Lion, Maverick, and Jesus Revolution to reach
out to those who are in need and to care
for people who don't know him. Today is a great
day to be here as we kick off a brand
new message series called at the Movies.
Speaker 6 (31:55):
Yeah, they've been doing this kind of thing, not just Saddleback,
but I don't know if saddlebacks will and it started
this whole series kind of this this whole summer series,
movie series thing. But the churches have been doing that
for a long time.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
Yeah, Saddleback is just so huge, such a foundation for
the seeker friendly movement, right.
Speaker 6 (32:13):
Yeah, I was church growth while we're watching this clip.
I was thinking about years ago. This has been I
don't know how long ago, probably nineteen nineties, mid nineties
or something. I was walking through I think it was
like a LifeWay store and I remember seeing in the
Bible study section a Bible study geared on Andy Griffith
(32:38):
and going through the uh that going through the Andy Griffith,
What was it called the.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
Andy griff wasn't the Andy Griffith Show.
Speaker 6 (32:50):
It was Ay Berry whatever. But it was all based
on those different TV shows, okay, and it had different
clips and things, and it's just like, oh my good,
this way, I have.
Speaker 5 (33:00):
To make a break here and tell you a story
about Andy Griffith. Now I am in labor in the
hospital about to give birth to our son Joel. So
this was in the year two thousand and one, and
my husband three in the morning is watching Andy Griffith
in the room and I'm like, I will not give
(33:25):
It's not gonna happen. You need to change the channel now.
And he was just enjoying himself while he is going
through it is the loving, the loving labor pains. And
I'm like, on top of all this pain, I'm not
watching I'm Andy Griffith fan. I do appreciate it Andy
griff And.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
I didn't bring up Andy Griffith to give myself away here,
but it's I just remember, I'm watching this Week at
the movies thing. Yeah, I'm watching us at the movie saying.
I'm thinking, oh, yeah, I remember when I was going
through the bookstore, the Christian bookstore, and I saw the
whole Andy if a Bible series thing, but anyway, that
just doesn't have anything, I guess.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
Yeah, So our next one, Andy Stanley north Point. Sure again,
he's got a big series called The Responsibles.
Speaker 12 (34:14):
And speaking of today, we are launching a brand new
series entitled They're Responsibles. This this in this series, this
is gonna be so exciting. This is actually an invitation
to join a select group of literally superheroes.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
They're there.
Speaker 12 (34:30):
They're super citizens, they're super family members, they're super they're
employers and employees.
Speaker 6 (34:36):
It's men, it's.
Speaker 12 (34:36):
Women, it's students, it's college students, it's singles, it's married,
it's it's adults. Everybody's abouted to be this kind of superhero.
And what makes these people super and what makes them
amazing is they are taking responsibility for their lives, their past,
their future, what's going on currently, their internal life we're
going to talk about, and their ex external life. These
(34:58):
these incredible people, they refuse to make excuses, they refuse
to blame, and they understand and this is why this
is so important, and this is why you need to
become a responsible They understand that their irresponsibility eventually becomes
someone else's responsibility and the responsibles. They're not having it.
Speaker 6 (35:20):
That's not who they are.
Speaker 12 (35:22):
They consider it, They consider that an epic fail. Now
they don't just consider that irresponsibility, they consider it a fail.
The responsibles, these are the people that clean up what
they mess up. These are the people that look around
to make sure they're fully carried. They're carrying their weight.
They're carrying their load that nobody else is having to
take responsibility for their irresponsibility. This is just who they are.
(35:45):
They're the best neighbors, they're the best friends, or the
best bosses. They're the best employees. They're the best sons
and daughters and husbands and wives and all of us.
This is not a religious thing or a Christian thing.
This is just a general invitation for all of us
to join this elite group of people.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
And that last thing he said, that is just what
I thought. When I'm listening to this, I'm like, well,
you don't even need to be a Christian to be responsible.
Speaker 6 (36:11):
And he said that this is not a Christian thing.
Is this is not a Christian thing. This is just
a responsible thing.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
So just be the best at everything you can do.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
This is why you're not going to You're not going
to grow if you're a Christian and you're going to
churches like this, You're not going to grow in Christ,
not in these churches. And the purpose of the pastor
is not to give ted talks. The purpose of the
pastors to preach Christ in Him crucified. Preach Christ in
(36:40):
Him crucified.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
Do you know.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
I've been doing a slightly in depth study of Genesis
this year. I'll probably be in Genesis for the next
ten years. But I one of the things I have
come to appreciate, and it's one of the preachers that
mentioned this, is how flawed we all are, and how
(37:04):
all of those patriarchs and all of the patriarch's wives
and every person in Genesis is just this flawed human
being that God chooses not because of who they are,
but because of who God is. And to me, that
just encourages me so much, because I'm so flawed and
without any reason for God to use me whatsoever, But He,
(37:27):
in his mercy and kindness, chooses to use me. So
I do not have to aspire to be a responsible
every day of my life. I want to aspire to
be more like Him. Yeah, and that will eventually I
will become more and more of a responsible if you
want to call it that, but more and more godly.
(37:47):
But I don't have to aspire to be all things
and then God can use me.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
Yeah, And that's the that's what's going on here. You know,
they're not they're not because they're not preaching Christ. They're
preaching law. And now that what they're doing is they're
putting these heavy burdens on their people and they're not
bringing Christ into the mix at all. And I'm not
just talking about Andy Stanley here. I mean there, you
(38:13):
go back and you listen to some of these guys,
you listen to church, Church by the Glades, you listen
to the saddleback guys, and Christ is not the center
of the message. The Law itself is the center of
the message. So when that takes place, then you're just
constantly overwhelmed and burdened. And that is not, I mean,
(38:34):
that is not what Christ wants. It's it's Christ who said,
come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on
you upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls. John says that the law isn't burdensome
(38:56):
to the Christian. But these pastors, what they are doing
is they are placing heavy burdens on the backs of
the people. And you know, Robin, they have a habit
of calling people that critique them, or even people maybe
like you, sitting in their churches and asking questions about
you know, a biblical passage calling them pharisees. These guys
(39:18):
are the ones who are the real pharisees. These guys
the ones who are doing these kinds of who are
pastors of these kinds of churches, These are the pharisees.
Speaker 5 (39:30):
Absolutely. We have a few verses here we want to
share with you. Firse Corinthians one seventeen and eighteen. For
Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach
the Gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest
the Cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For
the word of the Cross is folly to those who
are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it
(39:50):
is the power of God.
Speaker 6 (39:52):
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to
preach the Gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom,
and so that would also include not with giant productions,
not with you know what else did we series, smart
(40:14):
sermon series, Just preach Christ. Preach Christ, go through the scriptures,
preach it exegetically. Christ. The entire Bible is about Christ.
And yes, we do talk about holiness, and we do
talk about how to live the Christian life. But even
in that, you're going to present Christ. If you present
law and gospel, you're going to give the Christian exactly
(40:38):
centered on.
Speaker 5 (40:38):
Christ, exactly two Timothy four one through five. I charge you,
in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who
is to judge the living and the dead, and by
his appearing and his kingdom, preach the word. Be ready
in season and out of season. Reprove, rebuke, and exhort
with complete patience and tea teach for the time is
(41:01):
coming when people will not endure sound teaching but will
have itching ears. But having itching ears, they will accumulate
for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will
turn away from listening to the truth and wander off
into myths. As for you, always be sober minded, endure suffering,
do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Speaker 6 (41:24):
You really don't even have to say anything about any
of this. All you got to do is read that
verse right there, and that tells you that just totally
refutes everything that we have just seen in these clips.
Speaker 5 (41:36):
Just that one passage right exactly and tacking onto that
will go to First Timothy four thirteen until I come
devote yourself to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation
to teaching.
Speaker 6 (41:50):
Yeah, so the again, just looking at these passages of Scripture,
we don't have to say a word. Let scripture speak
for itself. That tells you right there, it refutes everything
that these guys have been doing. God birth you.
Speaker 7 (42:04):
He put an excellent work on the inside.
Speaker 5 (42:07):
So we've talked a little bit about music, worship music,
about crazy productions, gimmickey sermons and sermons sermons series, and
now we just want to spend a moment on what
your pastor looks like. What is he wearing? He or
she now past tracks, what are they wearing and who
(42:29):
are they trying to impress with their wild pastor wardrobes.
And I know as we're speaking, we're putting up some
wild photos and images right now of what these people
are doing. But let's listen to Michael Todd talk about
why he dresses the way he dresses.
Speaker 7 (42:47):
And so part of what I've always tried to do
is use my fashion to make a doorway for my faith.
And a lot of times people don't understand it, but
fashion actually somebody come up to use the easiest conversation
started like broo, jeans are fire?
Speaker 6 (43:02):
It is where you get that jacket?
Speaker 2 (43:04):
Is it?
Speaker 8 (43:04):
Come?
Speaker 7 (43:05):
And that doorway because Christ has to be introduced through conversation,
and a lot of times people don't conversate with people.
So I try to do things that can start a conversation.
And even if I'm looking wack, I'll go up to
somebody and like, bro your shoes And I was like, oh,
these are things.
Speaker 6 (43:23):
Like you know what I'm saying, But what does that do?
Speaker 7 (43:25):
That starts the conversation and who knows where that leads
to for the end of it, no matter if it's
in that conversation or teen conversations later. I wanted to
lead to Christ at some point.
Speaker 6 (43:33):
All right, we're not please understand what we're gonna say. Here,
go ahead. I can see her face.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
I'm just like, so something Michael Todd wears pink pants
when he's preaching, so that someone says, hey, Michael, where'd
you get those awesome pink dope pants? And he says,
it's because I love Jesus. Hey Michael, why where that
(44:00):
bright yellow short sleeve jacket that looks like my grandmother?
And because I'm a Christian? Yeah, because uses it to
share the gospel.
Speaker 6 (44:10):
It's it's really yeah. So you can see how stupid
that the line of thinking is. It's just not we're
not buying it, Michael Todd. We are not buying it
for a while, not at all. And we're not talking
about legalism here. I mean, this doesn't mean you, you know,
we're trying to be legalists and say you have to,
you know, dress a certain way in order to, you know,
(44:32):
in order to you know, show people that you're a Christian.
But you don't look like a woman. Number one. And
the Bible does have a lot to say about how
people Christians look in.
Speaker 5 (44:43):
Dress, and we have a few verses for you. But
there was one other thing that just we're not even
talking about the money that some of these people are spending.
Speaker 6 (44:51):
All the big war, Oh my goodness.
Speaker 5 (44:54):
And to me it's like, yes, if God blesses you
with money and you want to buy nice things, that's fantastic.
But to stand up as the pastor of a church
that's raking in the dough so much and is using
it all for ministry purposes, it's going a little bit,
a little bit up too far.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
I think absolutely all rights to our verses.
Speaker 5 (45:16):
Okay, one Timothy two eight through ten. I desire that
in every place the men should prey lifting holy hands
without anger or quarreling. Likewise, also that women should adorn
themselves in respectable apparel with modesty and self control, not
with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,
(45:36):
but with what is proper for women who profess godliness,
with good works.
Speaker 6 (45:42):
So I understand that these this passage and the next
passage we're going to read is talking about dress, women
and dress. But when you look at our culture today,
this translates right over to men too. Unfortunately.
Speaker 5 (46:01):
Yeah, it definitely applies to men and women today. Are
you dressing to call attention to your self?
Speaker 6 (46:07):
Exactly?
Speaker 5 (46:08):
And that's the problem. Some of these pastors are dressing
just to call attention to themselves. What we talked about
those pastors that are wearing the really tight tight.
Speaker 6 (46:18):
Shirt, short sleeve shirt to show off their bicep.
Speaker 5 (46:21):
That they work out every day like a Keith Kraft
kind of guy. Yeah, right, so, or or are you
dressing modestly so that your beauty from within shows fourth
First Peter three three and four. Do not let your
adorning be external, the braiding of hair and the putting
on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear. But
(46:43):
let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart,
with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which in God's sight is very precious.
Speaker 6 (46:53):
Yeah, that's beautiful passage and.
Speaker 5 (46:55):
Colossians three twelve put on then as God's chosen ones,
holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.
Speaker 6 (47:06):
Yeah, so you're right, Robin. These guys they can make
excuses like, hey man, I'm just using my dress so
I can reach people with the gospel. It's all about
It's all about drawing attention to yourself.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
Absolutely, and how much more bringing attention to yourself because
you are that godly person that people notice a difference
in exactly.
Speaker 2 (47:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (47:30):
So a pastor is to be an example to his flock.
He's to be sober minded. He's to know the scriptures.
He's to teach the scriptures. He's not to be a
clown like so many of these megachurch pastors are. They're clowns.
So what is a pastor?
Speaker 8 (47:48):
What is he to do?
Speaker 6 (47:50):
How is he to be an example?
Speaker 5 (47:53):
First Peter five two and three, shepherd the flock of
God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion,
but willingly as God would have you, not for shameful gain,
but eagerly, not domineering over those in your charge, but
being examples to the flock.
Speaker 6 (48:11):
So there you go, right there. And then we have
tewod Corinthians four to five.
Speaker 5 (48:16):
For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ
as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
Speaker 6 (48:24):
So Christ is to be the one who is to
be proclaimed. And these guys will say that they're doing
all of this because they're trying to point people to Jesus.
But the Jesus that they're pointing people to, for the
most part, is not the Jesus of scripture. I can
tell you that if Jesus is about getting you, what
(48:46):
you want rather than saving you from hell, saving you
from your sin, then you got a different Jesus. You're
preaching a different Jesus. So what is biblical worship. Biblical
worship is not about lights, cameras and entertainment. Biblical worship
is what Jesus said. It's someone who worships in spirit
(49:09):
and in truth. And unfortunately, these pastors, they're not teaching
you the truth. If you're in a megachurch that does
this sort of thing. Man, I know how difficult it is,
We know how difficult it is to leave a church,
but sometimes you just have to do it and find
(49:30):
a church that preaches Christ, that preaches through the scriptures,
that opens up the Bible and teaches from scripture. So, folks,
I hope this video was helpful to you. If it is,
please pass it along, share it, Lord Willing. We'll see
you next week.
