(00:22):
My fellow Americans. It is withdeep sorrow and sympathy on my end,
clearly not Chris, as he laughs, not with you, but at you.
But it is with deep sympathy thatI come to you today apologizing on
hands and knees, but actually sittingin a chair for leaving you alone since

(00:48):
the month of August, September came, September went, October came, October
went, November came, November went, not even a Thanksgiving or episode,
which we have a pretty good reputationof doing. We've left you episode lists
for months, yes, and uhpreach it. We want to apologize.

(01:11):
Yeah, we know we've hurt you. We've aged aged four months here without
any entertainment value added to your yourseason. We missed a whole season.
Really essentially, we didn't. Wedon't know how you survived. Yeah,
but it's our fault and we're sorry. Yeah but sorry, thanks, but

(01:37):
we are back today. We won'twe won't even address the fact that nobody
said this in the messages asking howwe were over the past format. Actually
we got one message. We gotone message demanding we do an episode,
needing a Christmas episode. No oneasked us how we were doing, but
there was a request for an episodefrom uh not another than Andy himself.

(02:00):
Oh, the one who I've mockedon this show. He's the one who
was looking. He was looking forus. He was waiting for us.
He was waiting. But anyway,we're back, we're here and uh,
you know what what are you wearing? What is going on right now?

(02:20):
Okay? Yeah, I like themarch she got on there. Oh that's
new, that's new lunch break podcastmerch right? Oh is it? It
matches the color scheme? You know, it's hard for me to see the
color scheme with these sunglasses. Yeah, perfectly, honest with you. So
what I'm rocking here? Some vintageI wonder if on the lens we can
give them a shot of just whatthat's what it looks like. Oh that's

(02:44):
so you've been seeing for the lastfifteen seconds. So a few months ago,
I was down getting something out ofmy mother's basement, and maybe it
was only a month ago, andI came across this hat with this hat
says its rim fire country music witha twist. And it was a band
that my father was in back inthe day, and so he had merch
and occasionally just find it laying around. So I snagged a hat. And

(03:07):
then just on Saturday, I waslooking through another box and I came across
these gems sunglasses. Gig warn maybelook at that because we were looking at
I showed you some pictures from ageeky was at he was definitely worrying.
If not those ones. A modelof the side of them though, sports

(03:27):
sports okay, so literally branding justsports just as sports sports there, oh,
sports easier to see. I'm prettysure these are from the dollar store.
He did not spend much on sunglasses. They are in intentionally molded the
lenses of different shapes. I don'tknow what's going on there. That was
the that was trending back in butyeah, so he was in a country

(03:53):
band, but they played a varietyof different things because they played country.
But then they would also like coverlike Elvis. Yeah, so they call
them little country music with a twisttwists. So I brought this stuff in
to add to I have all thismemorabilia in my office. Yeah, if
you haven't already noticed, what's behindus, Yeah, mishmash everything everything.
So dar Trek's stuff right now, there's no And then we got Seinfeld in

(04:15):
this air. Thank you for notcalling it friends, right, yeah,
yes, so I decided to addthe old hat and the hat and the
sunglasses to Uh it needs a bettershelf. It's kind of on my I
don't know where to put it shelf. Yeah, but uh it'll be seen
though, it'll be seen. Yeah. So this is yeah rimfire, it's

(04:35):
it's I mean, you don't getmore of a nineties trucker hat than this
where the foam even grim is foam. Yeah, it's not. It doesn't
quite fit my head. I thinkI'm on the last snap. But this
is what I played Little League inwas a style hat like this. Oh
yeah, oh yeah, that's right. I never played Little League, but
that looks like the way the hatsused to look back then. They were

(04:56):
they were crazy, they were madedifferent, lots different materials back then.
So yeah, sporting, I likeit. Yeah. So here's here's a
little clipper room fire in case youguys wanted to hear it. This is
a song called you Don't Have toBe from Texas to the Country. This
is converted from a cassette tape poorlyby me. You Don't have to Be

(05:20):
I would do it again. IfI could. It's better. You don't
have to be Tennessee. Oh youhave to do He's love that country meeting.
You don't have to be from Texasto be club try. You've heard
about that Yellow Flats in Texas.Yeah, like that base right, that's

(05:41):
Don Anderson on the stage play itDon Hey, we got news, got
news for him A Joseph's Country.Hey, Now you don't have to be
That's good stuff. Yeah, likeit. It's fun. It's it's it's
old school country. It's kind oflike cut from the cloth of the eighties
and nineties before it got to bereal outlaw country kind of stuff. It's

(06:03):
fun. I like it. Iremember watching some of the videos that you
came and you brought here. Yeah, see them on that One of them
was they were on like a revolvingstage. Yeah, pretty cool around as
they were playing it is pretty prettywild. And then one was outside h
w GNA right was the outside onewas w g and and look at your
memory there. Well I guess Idid just set the photos up and the

(06:24):
other think but I thought, wellthat definitely. Yeah, yeah, no,
it's pretty cool. So it's it'sfun to have these little things lying
around because he died when I wasvery young, So this is just stuff
you don't care about when you're akid, like you kind of think your
dad's a little bit of a dorkwhen he's in a country band. And
then he realized, like, no, that was actually pretty cool, pretty
awesome. Yeah, it's pretty cool. Uh speaking of dorks. Uh we

(06:46):
do. We do have another recordinghere from world Renow and clarinetist BJ.
Listen to this, yeah, playBJ. Yeah, it's playing the blues.
He's playing London Bridges. I don'tknow, he's probably in throat.
Yeah, I think he's in fifthgrade. But then my dad's jamming with

(07:09):
him, fake drum machine in thebackground, making a cool form, you
know what I mean. It's prettycool. I got to bring it back
up in volume though, when itgets to the part where my dad's like,
I'm not playing London Bridges again,it's time for a for a guitar

(07:30):
soul something else here, but shakeit up some Here we go riding the
wave Man smooth back to London Bridges, the back to the London Bridges.

(07:54):
All right, we can on thatone down well to B. J will
appreciate having that on the podcast.I'm sure, Yeah, yeah, he'll
love it. Yeah he doesn't listen. Maybe he does, I don't know.
I don't know who listens. He'shonestly, I don't listen to his
podcast. So we're even Stevens.And I don't think it's intentional on other

(08:16):
people's other person's part, like justactively not listening. A lot of clarifications.
I'm just listening to other things.Yeah, so yeah, so I'll
be rocking the rim fire hat today, kind of looking like a little like
comedian Dusty Sleigh. I think Imentioned him last time on the podcast funny

(08:39):
Guy. He's a funny guy.All right, all right, No,
we tried today, though, beforewe I think before we get to what
we tried today, I think Ialso need to publicly, I don't know,
confess I got another confession. MakeDo you know that Food Fighters song?

(09:00):
Yes? Okay, it's from thismaking sure it isn't the name of
the album confession. The name ofyour album is in your honor. But
so, I don't know how tosay this. It just got he just
got come out with it. Man, guys, got bury your soul here.
Sometime over the fall, somebody siousA young man named Timothy Blake was

(09:28):
at my house. We were enjoyinga fire out back, conversing about many
things. One of the things thatwe conversed about was crocs. There's say
the meaning of life. Sorry, that was there, but we also talked
about crocs. And in the midstof that conversation he went on Amazon,

(09:50):
a large online distributor of many goods, if you don't know, and he
he he ordered a pair for me. I didn't want them. He ordered
them. They came to my home, they came out of the box and
they sat there and then I did. I put my foot in them.
So so crocs happened to you whatyou're trying to say, Crocs happened to

(10:13):
me. They're in my home.If I'm running outside real quick, they're
going on my feet. They're aregular thing around the house. Darn it.
They're convenient, decently comfortable. Okay, socks or no socks or sand
socks. I've had socks on becauseit's been cold. Well, that's understandable,

(10:33):
but uh, I've been wearing crocs. It pains me to say it.
Well, I took such a hardstance against the croc. I didn't
go out of my way to buythem. I still wouldn't though. The
other day at the gym, somebodyaccidentally wore my crocs out of there because
there's a spot where you can takeyour shoes off when you're go in if

(10:54):
it's real rainy out. And somebodyelse also had black crocs, but they
have a smaller foot, and sothey took my crocs. And then they
came back this week. So youleft with other people's crocs. Oh,
I left with just my gym shoeson. Why did they wait? Wait
wait wait wait wait wait wait waitwait. So I was under the impression

(11:15):
here I was gonna pretty much vouchfor you, saying, at least you
stayed true to the fact you didn'twear them here out of the house.
I would not even have known thatyou had crocs, hadn't the story come
out that you received them as agift and that you wore them around the
house, Which is fine, Butnow you're saying something completely different than you
didn't tell me before we got onthe air. You wore them about it,

(11:35):
You wore them out of the house. You wore them as as to
a destination transportation shoe. Yeah, like you walk in the door, you
just kick the shoes off real quick, and then you get your shoes,
your gym, your gym sneaks on. I used to wear. That's weird.
Yeah, well that's not that that'snot that weird. I go,

(11:56):
first of all. Last, Firstof all, it's four forty five in
the morning when I get there.Nobody cares what I have on my feet.
Let me, what did you wearto the gym before you had crocs?
I had a pair of snooks thatwere falling apart that looked probably even
more pauper ish than the crocs.Okay, so you didn't you didn't start
using a a traveling foot, atraveling shoe. You're you always had a

(12:24):
traveling shoe to the gym that youwould change out with your when it's when
it's wet with your salty in thewinter season. Okay, so I just
I just at least a crock. The crock was just there. I went
with it. I had it.I guess it's it was bought for me.
No, I didn't, And Idon't think anybody cared. I don't
think anybody in the gym cared.Nobody noticed. But what I noticed when

(12:45):
I went to go put my crockson that one day was that there was
a pair there that looked far moreworn and a little bit smaller, and
I said, those aren't mine.Somebody took mine and I just went home.
I wasn't actually a little. Iwas a little set out about it
because they were kind of convenient. But then I was like, maybe this
is my ticket to not having crocks. But then they came back and they

(13:07):
wore their proper ones home and leftmine behind, so I took them back.
But anyway, I do have them. And since you have me on
trial for wearing them outside the housewhen I was very sick, I did
wear them to the doctor, Sogo ahead and judge me for that.
No, the doctor, the doctor, I would put shoes on and tie

(13:31):
them. Not with how I wasfeeling. I guess I had gout in
my toe and what was some kindof virus. Okay, that's true,
you had the gue. Yeah, that hurts, So you got to you
definitely be very careful. Yeah, with the with what you use, what
you wear, Yeah, on yourfeet when you have that. I'm letting
the world know. I felt obligedto let the world know that in my

(13:56):
I'm not covering it. Up,and I'm still sticking by my stance that
I don't like them look wise. And I made it very clear that I
was never commenting on comfort just Iwas never commenting on just the fashion side.
They're functional, they are They're notfashionable. They are an ugly shoe
there they will continue to be anugly shoe, and I own an ugly
shoe. Okay, speaking of shoes, you own a very not ugly shoe,

(14:20):
now, I do when shoes thatshoes that my new shoes, Yeah,
new Kicks. Yeah yeah, Wellit was Noah Miller kind of encourage
me. He did. He hadjust bought a pair of Jordan Ones and
in a particular is Boughton Boughton?Did I say that? I didn't say.
Did I did? I didn't know. I did not. I did

(14:41):
not say Boughton, I would playit back. We recently purchased, okay,
a pair of jay because you youyourself, would hear yourself. You're
going to hear it later. I'llnever say bought crossed. Well, you
have, but I probably did.So we both did things. You wear
crocs, I said, Boughton,so or even uh so. Anyway,

(15:03):
back to the story, Noah Miller, another mutual friend of ours along with
the Crocs episode. Yes, hewas on the Rock pro Croc Ironically.
He's taste, he does. He'sgot a great shoe taste. I guess
I would consider a mis sneaker headin some sense, right, Yeah,
you know. So he bought apair of Jay Ones and he was encouraged
me to buy them because they wereon steep discount, and uh, I

(15:24):
pardon the punt I would. Iwas dragging my feet over it because I
wasn't sure. I love the colorscheme. It was actually the kind of
this blue here, this light bluewith not dark blue, but with black,
like Carolina blue. Yeah, likeCarolina blue with black. And uh,
that's a very I mean, it'sa very specific color scheme and you
can't wear that with a lot.So anyway, so I was out shopping

(15:46):
for Christmas gifts for my for mykids, but with Breonna, we were
passing through Dick's Sporting Goods and they'rethere. They were the Jordan ones and
uh but they were next to themanother pair of Jordan ones that were very
cool. Yeah, black white withand the Nike swoosh was is a is

(16:07):
like a gold so it kind ofsets it sets it off, and it's
like and and the in the blackis like a patent leathers, very shiny,
shiny. So I had to textthem after I purchased them. They
were also on discount, and Ihad somebody cared. You could let them
know, you're a forty year oldman. Now you've turned forty since the
last time we rerecord. I'm goingthrough a midlife crisis. All these highs

(16:30):
that I couldn't have when I wasa kid. Now, whatever shoes you
want, you don't have to prefaceit. Yeah, So he had five
hundred dollars for those shoes, soI did. I did text to Noah
that I said, Hey, II got these Jordan's and but I have
to apologize that they're not the samecolor. So we won't be we won't
be Jordan's Twins's on Sunday, butwe'll still be Jordan Bros. Because all

(16:52):
were my Jordan Ones. And heforgave me. You know, he's I
have to you know, he's agood good man. But and he was,
but he also encouraged me that Ihadn't made a good purchase. Yeah.
The years are years of versatile Yeah, that's why I wanted to get
them, so I can wear themwith almost anything. That was a good
purchase. Yeah, they were definitelyyou're gonna end up on there's an account

(17:15):
called Preachers and Sneakers. You're goingto end up on it. But maybe
it's worth it. Yeah why not? Maybe not? And let me give
me some you know, some exposure. That's what you need maybe for this
podcast. Yeah, for the lunchbreak, we'll go from millions to billions.
Yeah, exactly, from fifty tofifty two. So all right,

(17:41):
how do it? Was away fromthat though? Oh well, well,
let's just keep going. We're bringingyou up. WHOA hold on, We're
kind of just my mish smashing everythingtoday. We've got speakable speaking of mishmash
mishmash. See that that was great. I didn't even mean that. Yeah.
Uh, you tried something for thefirst time for the first today that
I've been meaning to. It's somethingthat I really enjoy. It's a food.

(18:06):
I guess it's a breakfast food.I've only had this breakfast. I
had no context for this whatsoever whenI first learned about about scrapple. Yes,
that's what Chris tried for the firsttime today it was it was called
scrap grapple, So it's it's apparentlyit's a well, it's I wouldn't say
it's a Northeastern fair, would you. It's more of a I don't know

(18:30):
what es Central Pa. And let'sgo to Widelaware, you know, let's
see what this say. They're wheredoes it originate? So uh. Scrapple,
also known by the Pennsylvania Dutch namean house, is traditionally a mush.
I don't call it that. Amush of pork scraps and trimmings combined

(18:52):
with corn mill wheat flour and oftenbuck wheat flour and spices. So the
mush is formed into a sense solidloaf. It's a loaf of scrapple.
Slices of scrapple then pan fried beforeserving. So yeah, scraps of meat
left over from butchering, not usedor sold elsewhere, made in the scrapple
to avoid waste, and it's primarilyeaten in the southern mid Atlantic region of

(19:15):
the United States Delaware, Maryland,South Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington,
d C. So I had scrapplefor the first time while I was
in college and just outside Philadelphia.I didn't have a good scrapple, but
that was my first exposure. Andthen being married to a Lancaster County height
and having a brother in law whois a butcher, I've since had Lancaster

(19:37):
scrapple, which is very very veryI think it's very very very very tasty.
So today you got to try scrapple, and your first exposure was from
a very local butcher down there,Clark Co Meats where my brother in law,
Dan is one of the butchers there, with a guy named Clark the

(19:57):
owner. That was the scrapple youhad, Color Co. I'd say,
thanks, it was good. Thankyou guys for for stocking it in and
Ricky's freezer there for for me totry eventually. Well, the whole thing
that started up for me at leastwas I had no idea about what scrapple
was. I never heard of it, and I was watching Dirty Jobs with

(20:18):
with Mike Rowe and shout out MikeShike fan show anyway, So uh,
he was on and he did anepisode where he was in Delaware. I
think it was felt in Delaware andhe was at a scrap I don't know
to call him a scrap of mill, but it was. It was in
a scrapple mill. They were makingscrapple, and I was like, and

(20:41):
I was intrigued by it. SoI was happy to be talking to Ricky
about it. And then he's like, oh, yeah, I know scrapple.
I have. I got some ofmy freezer. So what ended up
doing I thought it was it wasa great idea to do it as a
White Elfant gift for our community groupwhere we get together, uh you know
this time of the year and wehave like just a Christmas party and all
bring gifts, and I think andwe were doing like funny gifts this year,

(21:03):
so I decided, oh, I'mgonna bring some scrapple. So it's
like, I asked Ricky where doI find this? Since after I knew
that he knew what scrapple was,and he's like, I don't even know
if you can get around here.So I looked around. I found that
they actually had it at Hannaford, and I got some Jones's. I think
we did we google it to Oh, yeah, we probably, I think
you're right. I think we googledit first, and then I went and
found it and yeah and uh,and I got it so Jones, which

(21:26):
I don't know it's I've seen it'sthe white box with the green letters.
Yeah yeah, and sausage I've seen. I've seen their sausages around, so
I knew the brand. But butI so ended up bringing it to the
party as a gift, only thento just steal it back for myself.
You were so obsessed with trying itthat you couldn't let someone want let it

(21:48):
go, even though it was onlyfour bucks. I'm like, I'll just
buy it some other time for myself. Was like no, I had to.
I had to bring it home.So I knew Chris wanted to try
Scrapple, but I was like,I'm not going to give you my Scrapple
for my freezer because I don't wantto give it up. And then I
opened the freezer today and realized Ihad three massive blocks in there, and
I was like, well, Iprobably could have just given you the good

(22:11):
scrabble. I don't know if Jonesis bad Scrapple, and I do feel
a little bad about being selfish, but I don't know, but you over
just the overkin that by bringing ittoday. So I shared it. It
was very good. Well one Isaw how many, I was like,
oh my gosh, yeah yeah,no, no big deal, not a
big deal and not a big dealanyway, Dan, my brother in law

(22:32):
makes the stuff. Anytime I wantscrapple, I can have scrapple. I
don't know my apologies for not givingyou the good scrapple. I think someone
may have just arrived at our church. So we're going to take a quick
pause here. The Lunch Break podcastwill return momentarily. Okay, so apparently

(23:06):
the place is haunted and there wasnobody. There was all alarm, nobody
at all. But yeah, soI forget where we were talking about.
Scrapple. Oh, I was justapologizing for for hoarding it. Yeah it
was good though, So I mean, I'm in now, so I'm all
about it. I'm gonna try theJones and I'll have I'll have something now
to compare it with to see.It was unlike anything nothing else that you

(23:27):
fry up. No, No,that's what I'm saying. It's its like
trying to trying to compare to somethingin my mind, even spam, because
spam is a similar conglomeration of things. But it's a very different, yes
way, spam is introduced very firm. Yeah, I mean, and it's
like you and it's just meat. This has corn meal, has like flour
in it, so it's got thatthat that aspect to it, which changes

(23:52):
it completely. Apparently. There's anineteen ninety eight film called Scrapple. Oh
for the nineteen ninety eight film seeScrapple film. Oh what is this about?
It's probably not. A nineteen ninetyeight American comedy film directed by Christopher
Hanson, starring Jeffrey Hanson, RyanMacy, Bucksimmons, and Bunsie Bunsie Bunworth.
That can't be a name, BunsieBunsworth. Oh my goodness. Grapple.

(24:17):
Well, food Scrapple is definitely morepopular than that movie. Yeah,
for sure. I've never eaten ona sandwich. I guess you could see
it, but it seems like breadon bread. Yeah, idea a stuff
in the sandwich. It's got abreading in it kind of. So yeah,
typically cut into a quarter to threequarter inch thick. Mine was.
I cut it a little thin today, but it was a little hard.
It was partially frozen right shaving off. And also it can also be broiled.

(24:40):
Oh I could see that thing, but you really want you want that
crust on either side, so youget like a crispy bite, but that
soft inside that's what you're looking for. Oh this is good too, Like
just what you said. It canis usually eating as a breakfast side dish.
It could be served plain or eithersweet or savior savory condiments. Which
is funny because I was actually thinkingthat, thinking that as we were talking.

(25:00):
I never brought up to you isuh. I could almost I could
almost see it, you know, adding something sweet to it, you know,
like a jelly or something like thatjelly syrup. Yeah, apple butter,
I could see butter very yeah, probably want to The scrapple we had
today was very good. Yeah, but I think one of my favorite scrapples

(25:22):
from Lancaster is from Stole Touice Meats. It's just really good. It's got
like I don't know, it's it'sall in the seasoning component, right,
yeah, a different profile. Yeah, everybody's got their own version, their
own take on it, right.Yeah. The one we had today there
was these notes of that reminded meof corn beef hash a little bit,
just in flavor profile it was stillreally good. Yeah, yeah, it's

(25:44):
a once you get past it beingcalled scrapple, which is not a great
name, it's really good, right, Yeah, it is very good,
So I'm definitely gonna try some otherones now too. So at your Christmas
party then, so you did awhite elephant gift exchange, you got the
Scrapple. Did you have any likekind of desserts, any kind of Christmas

(26:04):
cookie or anything like that. No, you know, we didn't. Actually
we did something different this year.Rather than us bringing different entrees or you
know, or desserts, we alljust did apps this time around, So
everybody just brought appetizers, which Icould go all day with I love I
just love me too from the appletizers. But yeah, we did. We
did end up having a dessert atthe end though. We had the deeps

(26:26):
were made brownies and we had icecream, so we had like Brownie Sundays
at the end, which is reallygood, which is not typically a necessarily
a Christmas thing, but it's agood dessert. Yeah. But yeah,
so we didn't have like a Christmaslike dessert item, Yeah, we didn't,
would you guys? Did you haveanything at your our group well,

(26:49):
we always have something to eat,so I'm trying to think if there's anything
special. There was. There wasdesserts, but we didn't have a Christmas
party. We're doing a Christmas We'redoing doing it really genuine, which kind
of works out because this is apretty busy time of years, so it
does work out that way. ButI think typically, like when I've thrown
Christmas parties, there's always some kindof a cookie, and Christmas cookies can

(27:11):
be so hit or miss. Absolutelythose the sugar cookies or even or even
like what do you get this timeof year? You get the gingerbread.
Gingerbread is a big thing for Christmastime. Gingerbread is a gingerbread cookie.
I feel like gingerbread is really goodin your head, yeah, and then
you get it and you're like, this cookie is not a great it's a

(27:33):
great to the eye, but likeI'm if I don't eat it, I'm
okay, Yeah, I could goa whole year or two or yeah without
it without like a ginger snap,I don't eat it, yeah either yeah,
take or leave it. I thinkonce I get eating it, I'll
still eat it. And any cookieI can make taste good with coffee.
Oh that's true, that's one youcould you can have a coffee. But
it's actually funny because, uh,at my daughter's school, they've basically been

(27:56):
in gingerbread mode. That had likea gingerbread selling a bration day where the
someone was dressed up like the gingerbreadMan. I think it was the librarian
reading the gingerbread Man story. Theymade gingerbread houses, so it's all about
gingerbread and we were like, oh, it would be fun to actually make
a gingerbread man with Lily. Andthen we were both like, but she's
not gonna want to eat gingerbread. So we made sugar cookies and cut them

(28:18):
into the shape. Oh yeah, that's good too. She still didn't even
want to eat the sugar cookie. She just wanted to eat the sprinkles and
the frosting off the top of allthe fun stuff. So but yeah,
so yeah, I think gingerbread menand that whole idea of we're gonna make
cookies together is a good thought. But it's not a cookie I want to
eat. And actually store bought sugarcookies, I don't want anything to do

(28:41):
with them. No, but awhole midge sugar cookie I enjoy it.
Like I like sugar cookies too.I like the dough. Oh yeah,
I could just eat that. Wedon't. I'm trying to think of the
last time we've made cookies or anythingthat we've done, like the chocolate chip
cookies, like the toll house cookies, but we've done any sugar cookies and
all long time. A good Agood toll House cookie though, is clutch.

(29:03):
Yeah, that's a go to cookiethat's agree have any time. Yeah.
I know we've talked about cookies onthe show before, but like the
chocolate chip was the winner, wasn'tit. Yeah? Yeah, absolutely,
Yeah, it's got to be you. You like your oatmeal raisins. I
know that's not forget about that Idid. That's true. I've changed the
time, but I still like. But obviously you're not at home making homemade

(29:23):
oatal raisins. No, you're makingnasty tollhouse That's true. It's easy to
do winter. But what other kindof the cookies? You know? One
of my favorite cookies this time ofyear, which it only seems to be
well it gets the seasonal thing. There's those uh snowball cookies, you know
what I'm talking about. They're likethey're I guess they're like a sugar cookie
almost, but they're a different consistencyand they're they're they look like little snowballs

(29:48):
and they've got the the sugar ontop of the confectionary factionary sugar on top,
and they usually have like a nuttinside like a walnut or yeah,
you know, I love those.I don't know what it is about out
them, because you think that theywould be dried out, but I think
because they're small, because of theshape they're in, they just they're they're
good. You know they're going tobe It's one of those dry but for

(30:10):
me good though. That's a cookieon the platter that I'm not reaching for
first. It's like I've I've maybehad one of the other options. I'm
trying to even think of, what, like how many Christmas cookies do I
actually love to eat? I'm notsure. Sometimes like a good thumb print
cookie. Oh yeah, it's gotthe little literally a thumbprint and it's filled

(30:33):
with a jam. I like that, or those I like to like those
are they make them with peanut butterand then they stick like a Hershey kiss
in that spot. Yeah, Ithink called blossoms. I would called peanut
butter bossoms peanut butter cookies. Butyou don't like peanut butter cookies No,
not in general? No, man, Well I like those, but those
are things come out the time ofyear. I like the generic short bread

(30:56):
cookie that just either has red thesugar or green sugar on it, which
it should be on the probably onthat. I can't believe people are buying
these cookies list, but I dolike them. I do too, That
is true, those are really goodcookies. What about what it is about
them? What are those red andgreen ones? In the shape of a
leaf but like chocolate in the middle. Yes, why a leaf? They're

(31:21):
clearly is that Christmas? Is thata Christmas time cookie? I don't know
why the shape of a leaf? And I never thought about that before until
just now. But they're usually onChristmas platters. Yeah, it's like I'm
listing all these, I'm like,I'm not sure which one I'm reaching for.
I think it's just to grab acookie, not to leave the cookie
part of it outside. But onething that jumped to my mind, and
I think because you're talking about itbeing the shape of a leaf, where

(31:44):
are the chocolates, the the orangechocolates in the shape of an orange,
chocolate orange chocolate oranges. Oh,those are I used to get when ever,
I used to get on every singleyear, slam it down so that
way it can actually break apart intothis into the each slice. Those are
really good. Yeah, I thinkwe're kind of I think I got chocolate
orange out after a couple of decadespassing them countless Christmas. But once I

(32:07):
had a dark chocolate orange, Iwas like, this is even better because
I just like dark chocolate far morethan milk chocolate. We've talked about this.
It's aod combination though, that thechocolate with the the orange, like
with with a citrus. I don'tknow what it is. I just it's
good. Actually, lint lint lI and d T you know what I'm
talking about. The chrufcolate one theymake like the bars and you can get

(32:30):
it. It's like it's all Ithink it's all dark chocolate pretty much,
but it's I think you get likedark chocolate with orange. You can get
dark chocolate with chili powers I've seenI've had. That's good. It is
good dark chocolate with sea salt andcarme like, they're really good. I'm
so mad that that store doesn't existin the mall now because I loved getting
those bars, and you can getthem at stores here and there, but

(32:51):
it's not the same variety and it'snot the same experience. You go in
and just it's a chocolate store.Chocolate, do you know what that's We
were at the mall the other dayand there's just not a lot of exciting
things going on in them wall. No, it's true, even Sanna,
there was nobody lined up to seeSanta. Well, I guess we were
there in the evening, so thatwould explain. Were you in the line?

(33:14):
No, I was not in youbut your family for your kids.
No, we were there without children. Yeah, we'd stopped after having dinner
and but yeah, it's just there'slike these mom and pop clothing stores like
selling clothing that I don't know who'sgonna buy it. There's there's very niche

(33:37):
stuff like the whole like Native Americanclothing. I'm like, I don't see
a lot of people wearing it,but you're paying for mall space, right,
Someone's got to be buying it.But I haven't seen anyone there like
there's coats there that remind me ofLloyd Christmas Jacket when he gets the money
from Mary Swansea. The way he'swearing the cowboy hat. Like, there's

(34:01):
stuff that reminds me of that.I'm not this true. I'm just it's
just not the same experience at theball, That's all I'm saying. No,
that's true. Well, I thinkI think that the mall are just
they want anybody and any anything inthere, because I don't think people are
going to the malls all that oftenanymore. That's not the way they used
to. It seemed like an averageevening. So they're just yeah, so

(34:22):
they they'll let anybody in there that'sgot any goods to sell because they just
want to fill the spaces so they'renot empty. Yeah, I think it's
part of part of it. It'sit's wild. I mean, there's no
hubbub around the movie theater. There'sjust true. It's not the same.
But like that lint store in themall used to be so fun to go
to as an adult, just tolike pick out, like let's just get
a variety of these truffles. Theywere good. And what made me think

(34:45):
of that not only because of thechocolate orange is Katie would actually put him
in my stocking, like they becamea replacement for the chocolate orange and I
got spicy chocolate. Did you everget like a man? Do you ever
get like a I don't know why. I always thinking this, maybe because
it's just an old time thing. But an orange, just just a regular
orange, oh, in your stockingand your stocking. Yeah, I think

(35:07):
my grandmother talked about it seems likethat something used to be the case back
in the day orange. It waslike for good fortune or something. Yeah.
And I think also that's when orangesare typically coming out, like in
January. And I think if you'reobviously in the North, you it's not
the same as it like it wouldbe today where you can get fruit of

(35:27):
any variety all year long. Right, So it was special, a special
thing to get a special type offruit to get, you know what I
mean? So you know what,To be alive in a time where you
would just be grateful to get anorange is mind blowing to me. I
know, this part of me wasthinking, I wish, I wish I
could live in that that time period, Like could you imagine Christmas being magical?
Because you get an orange, like, right, Like this is a

(35:52):
treat. I'm getting an orange,Oh my goodness, and that orange.
I get to eat the whole orange, right and just be like and I'm
I'm walking through the grocery store.I'm like, I don't feel like dealing
with orange peels. I don't wantthe orange. Like we live in such
a time of being ungrateful everything atour fingertips get any type that we want

(36:14):
anytime. Like, it's kind offunny to think, like, yeah,
people used to just be happy tohave a piece of fruit, and now
I have to like grip my teethand try real hard just to eat fruit.
Yeah, so orange or coal.So for Christmas dessert that we always

(36:36):
had growing up, friendlies used tomake this thing called the Jubilee roll.
Oh my goodness, Yeah I've seenthat. Yeah it's uh so, it's
it's like a log. They alsomake a thing called the Yule log,
and it would have like a stripeof here's a better picture of it right
here. Oh yeah, I cansee the striper of strawberry with like these
little candies. And this is likehot like fudge. It's not hot fudge,
it's frozen, but like ice cream, fudge with a little thing is

(36:59):
that wallet maybe almond mixed nuts,I don't know, excuse me, and
then vanilla with chocolate chips and thena thing of chocolate. So it's almost
like a neopolitan. Yeah, butslice it and then we'd have it every
year. But I could see thatcan only that would it looks like a

(37:21):
Christmas e dessert, Like you wouldn'thave that year long, year round.
No, but I'm seeing it's youravailable in Walmart. Oh, think about
getting one. We got to knowwe were talking about. We weren't sure
out of stock. I don't knowif they make them anymore, the Jubilee
roll Friendly, but that was Ohthey had the whole description on there.
If I didn't close out the theundo delicious chocolate ice cream surrounded by See

(37:47):
they're making this the the top billingis the chocolate ice cream, probably the
least amount of chocolate, like mediocrechocolate ice creams. Let me fix your
box. Friendly Friendly is surrounded bya minimum amount of Yes, surrounded by
chocolate chip ice cream topped with fudge, chopped almonds, and and ice cream

(38:13):
ribbon and candy chips. So they'recalling that cream ribbon not mentioning what the
ribbon is strawberry strawberry? Ye,strawberry strawberry. Yeah. What's the one
thing that we used to get andI didn't appreciate as a kid, But
now I I think I like it? Is the fruitcakes. I mean,

(38:35):
I gotta laugh because it was alwaysa derogatory term, like, oh,
what a fruitcake? But like afruitcake is specifically the Italian I'm gonna butcher
the name because I never knew exactlyhow I say it. But PATIONI or
pet pet, I don't know.I didn't grow up having it. Well,
we would have it every once ina while, and I used to

(38:57):
think it was dry, flaky andinteresting as a kid, like you want
that, you want the candies youwant? I want to I'd rather have
a jewbi Lee roll probably over that. But now it comes out every year
and you see it in the inthe stores, and it's usually out on
top of you know, they putit in a place where it's going to
be seen invisible, and it's gotthat that cool box that it's in that's

(39:20):
yellow or red that just draws yourattention, and you know they probably just
have just enough there to get peoplethrough this season. But that was something
I used to hate, but nowit's like as an alt adult, I'm
like, oh, that's actually it'spretty good. Well yeah, because like,
fruitcake was always that thing that nobodywanted, right, that was the
butt of every exactly Christmas dessert joke. Actually, I remember watching did you

(39:43):
ever did you watch Pee Wee's PlayhouseChristmas Special? Yes? Oh yeah,
I used to watch that. Everyyear people would bring him a fruitcake and
he was building this whole room outof fruitcakes. Yeah, oh ah,
fruitcake, remember that? Thank youyou you shouldn't have. But the last

(40:05):
year or the year before, Ithink it was probably two years ago,
we went down to Lancaster and wewent to this bakery that we like,
getting a doughnut called a long Johnfrom a place called Ackin' Box, and
they had fruitcake, and just somethinginside me says, I want to try
this place is fruitcake. I've neverhad fruitcake. I want to try it

(40:28):
from this bakery. And it wasactually produced, but something that's made in
a bakery. Yeah. Yeah,it was delicious. Yeah they're good.
That's they're good. Everyone's knocking thefruitcake. Yeah, I like it.
Fruitcake is not bad No, it'sgood. I like it. Taking a
stand and I'm okay to and I'mon board saying that. I feel comfortable
saying that now. No, Ihaven't tried a bad fruitcake, but if
you give me a bad chocolate cake, that's still a bad chocolate cake.

(40:51):
That's true. Bad is bad,no matter what, right, no matter
what it is that you're having, that's true. You have a stale s
I mean, I could see reasonwhy it wouldn't be good. Yeah,
if it could be stale or youknow, what have you. But no,
like a good fruitcake is a welcomedgift. Have I had it since

(41:12):
then? I haven't, But Ihave this good memory of that fruitcake was
not bad. So I have thatin my head. Yeah, and it
only comes out Christmas time typically.Yeah, well, I mean maybe some
people are looking for a year roundagain. Yeah. I can't think of
if I've ever seen it out anywhereother than that, I don't know.

(41:34):
But it's a good treat, yeh, nice little little dessert. I don't
know what other. I mean, there's all kinds of cookies people have.
I don't know what else. Yeah, I can't think of anything else that
sticks in my memory I'm sure youguys can think of something that they are
listening. So anything that was thatwas major then let us know. Everybody's
got their own things. Yeah, there are traditions too, and and what

(42:00):
we want to know is, yeah, tell us what you have on Christmas
that's maybe unique and we gotta tryYeah, we'll try it. Yeah,
pies aren't a big thing on Christmas. I mean Thanksgiving they are Christmas pie.
I bet you there's people having pie. Yeah, but yeah, that's
more of a Thanksgiving thing. Yeah. Yeah, Christmas is really like I
guess cookies is the thanks and candiesbut like candy canes and cookies aren't.

(42:27):
I don't only want a cookie fordessert? Do you think that? Onfeet
Christmas time? It's it's less aboutthe desserts. I mean, you don't
have a formal dessert necessarily. It'smore like you have treats that you eat
anytime. Yeah, a cookie here, you know, a candy cane there,

(42:47):
or you know, a chocolate hereand there. You know, it
seems like you don't have like aoh, let's let's have our Christmas dessert.
Yeah, I mean we would alwayssit down, like back in the
day, my mom used to likemake a lot of sugar, a lot
of Christmas cookies, and she'd havethem in their different tins and we'd sit
down at the table and open thetin and have we would have a sit

(43:10):
down dessert, but it would becookies and the Jubilee roll. Yeah,
that's pretty much the tin that youmentioned. Was it the Royal Dance?
No, but I do love Ilove those cookies, those tins, Like
you remember seeing those as a kid, Like everybody had them in their home
this time of year. Yeah, and no one ever actually had the cookies
outside. Yeah, I remember theycame in the little uh, the little

(43:34):
I don't even call them, almostlike a cupcake holder, you know what
I mean, like a little paperpaper like I need holder. I need
one of those good and they hadyou had two different layers of them,
right, You would have a onelayer maybe those, and you take take
off another layer. You have anotherone on under no party is over,
just kidding. There's more spa gunthat I like, the little ones in

(43:55):
the shape of the pretzel with likethe big sugar, crystalized sugar or whatever
on it. They were definitely thecenterpiece of the mall. I used to
thought they were a crown because becausethe Royal Royal Dance. Maybe maybe I
was wrong. It's a pretzel likebut they those are those are good.
But the tins we had weren't thoseones. They were like specifically bought cookie

(44:15):
tins meant for it. Right.Oh you know what else I've had this
time of year that a relative wouldmake. I think it was maybe my
stepdad's sister would make peanut brittle.Oh, I like a good love peanut
brittle. Yeah, I used tolike that growing up too. Actually,
when I worked at the upholstery shop, it was I used to work in

(44:35):
a postry shop if you guys didn'tknow. And it was attached to what
it had an apartment attached to it, and the woman who owned the building
actually lived in that apartment. Shemade toffee. Oh I like toffee too.
She is legit, man. Wouldshe would be cooking it. You
could smell it in the shop andI'm like, I'm gonna go purchase some
toffee. That's amazing. And itwas really good, again, not a

(44:58):
dessert, but a delicious treat. So I like the peanut priddle and then
that's alongside it. It was becauseit was toffee. With chocolate, and
it was called tree bark, youknow what I mean, where the bine
and it's very thin like the peanutpriddle. Oh that was so good.
I love that too. How aboutthis peppermint bark? Oh yeah, And
I don't even let you like peppermint, but I like the peppermint bark because
it has like a another it's notit's not overly peppermint. Right. It's

(45:22):
mostly chocolate, Yeah, yeah, whether it be white or milk. Usually
the white chocolate's what I remember seeing. But the white chocolate's a good vehicle
for the peppermint because it subdues thepeppermint and it gives you that sweetness,
but a subtlety. Yes. DoI sound like I know food? Well,
you sound like you sound like describebetter than what I did, which

(45:43):
is like, it's not so overlypeppermint. It's not a I wouldn't I
wouldn't go bon it. I wouldn'tgo down to the store and bowling anyway.
But you'll lead it for free.Uh yeah, so I don't know.
Yeah, those are some things thatI remember as well. Would you

(46:05):
say those are a few of yourfavorite things? Can we can we just
talk? Can we take it.That's what I want, That's what I
want to Why. I don't know. I don't know why it became.
Is it because Christmas gifts so wrappedup in things that we hear this song
and when they talk about gifts, you talk about yeah, everything packages and
papers and you know, all thethings that are your favorite, like gift

(46:27):
items. So I think that's whereit probably comes from. But it's not
a Christmas song. No, she'sjust trying to entertain some kids, right,
fraw Line, Maria fraw Line, that's that's a great, great move
movie, a phenomenal movie. Yeah. Don't they also play at Christmas time
the Wizard of Oz? Yeah, they play the Wizard of Oz a lot.
Does that make any sense? Doesmake any sense that? I don't

(46:47):
think it was winter? It clearlywasn't winter in Kansas. She was outside
the short sleeves. But Diehardy isa Christmas movie. Yeah. I think
we're all comfortable saying that. Okay, I just want to make sure,
right, Yeah, maybe said Idon't remember if I said otherwise on the
show. But I don't know whatWe've talked about it before, but it
had did we probably did talk aboutit, had to have talked about Diehard.

(47:07):
That's just a great I mean,that's a very good I mean there's
the North Pold and there's Nachotomy Plaza. I mean it is what it is.
Welcome to the party, palh Well, I think we're getting a little
silly here, So I think it'sabout that time that we be signing off
of the old lunch Break podcast. We're glad to be back, hopefully,
