Gonna talk some Red Wings and Pistons, a little bit

(01:09):
of Tigers as well with some screen sharing. But first off,
the Red Wings they signed forward Mason Appleton to a
five point eight million dollar contract to kick off part
two of the of our twenty twenty five Red Wings

(01:30):
and Pistons off season summer frenzy. It's not just free agency,
it's also a sign in trade involving the Pistons sending
Dennis Shutter to the Sacramento Kings. We'll get to that
later on. But the Red Wings get Ford Mason Appleton.
They signed to a two year, five point eight million
dollar contract. So let's go ahead and get to those

(01:58):
Advanced Hockey stats on Advanced hockeystats dot Com as I
turn on my screen sharing right here on Streamyard Mason
Appleton are a projected war percentage of forty three percent.

(02:18):
He's aged twenty eight, a third liner, a capet of
two point two million dollars plus one times one, so
you can see all his percentages and his grafts, his
war percentile ranking. It's slightly declining from over fifty percent,

(02:41):
slightly over fifty percent, like fifty two percent from the
twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three season to forty
three percent after this previous season with the Winnipeg Jets.

(03:02):
And then we get the offense versus defense versus finishing
graft right here defense isn't red right here, offense isn't blue.
Finishing offenses white. Finishing is blue. The offense is decline.

(03:27):
The finishing has ascended from I believe less than twenty
percent to over fifty percent from the twenty twenty two
to twenty three season to the twenty twenty three to
twenty twenty four season, and then slightly decline to just

(03:50):
under fifty percent to like forty nine percent from the
twenty twenty four season to the twenty twenty five season.
Now it's protected warped percentage forty three percent, even strength
offense seventy one percent. His goal scoring value is twenty

(04:12):
three percent, just twenty three percent. But he can facilitate
at least his even strength defense seventeen percent, that which
is terrible. First assists forty percent, penalties sixty five percent

(04:33):
in as Shaden in blue competition percentage sixty two. He's
a he's half a team player and half not at
his teammates. Percentage percentiles fifty four percent, finishing percentiles forty
one percent, no percentiles on the power play, on his

(04:55):
power play value or penalty killing value. But someone posted
on X that I think Max Boltman or something like that.
Max Boltman or someone like him posted on x that
his that he's a valuable penalty killing asset like he

(05:18):
was in the with the Winnipeg Jets, that he can
be a penalty killing as good of a penalty killing
asset with a Red Wings the upcoming season regular season.

(05:40):
So penalties sixty five I'm not I'm not sure if
I understand this. It does he commit as many penalties
a sixty or does he avoid as many penalties as

(06:03):
sixty five percent? But even strength offense and penalty killing
are is only two bright only two bright spots. Competition.

(06:23):
It's not terrible, but it could be better, a little bit,
at least a little bit better competition sixty two percent.
That could be like a half a bright spot, like
two and a half bright spots right there for Mason Appleton.
But he can't defend any any and he's not a

(06:45):
goal scorer, not so much a finisher, and he is
sometimes a team player but not always so. Mason Appleton,
he has bright spots and he has flaws, so he's

(07:09):
a that's why he's a third liar in time on ice.
So it's so it's not actually a big splash by
Steve Eiserman, general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. However,

(07:40):
and they did sign Elmer Soda Blame. I'm gonna get
to him in a minute, but m H. Debt fan
man wants to comment on YouTube. Analytically, I don't know,
but he does have a killer hockey nickname Apple Sauce.
The will add some aggression to the back half of
the roster, which is badly needed. All to say, I'm supportive,

(08:03):
and then he is known to be aggressive, so likely
he incurs penalties. Read that odd six that odd sixty
five percent stat in penalty in the penalty in the
penalties percentile. So just wondering what Kyle Bush of the

(08:26):
Healthy Scratch Red Wings report thinks of that. But anyway,
the Red Wings also resigned Ford Elmer Soda Bloom to
a two year, two point five million dollar contract. Let's

(08:47):
let's screen share this and take a look at his
advanced hockey stats. Elmer Soda Bloom fifty three projectile projected
war percent. He's a left wing and center in age
twenty three is a fourth liner a capet of zero

(09:08):
point nine million dollars times one is the even strength
offense at seventy percentile at seventy seven percent, goal scoring
percent eighty one percent, which is a lot, which is
way better than Mason Appleton's. As I compare the two

(09:32):
on this episode, even strength, defense percentile forty percent, verst
assists forty one percent, penalties just thirty nine just thirty
nine percent, tile penalties percent of just thirty nine percent,
competition fifty one percent, teammates forty seven percent, finishing forty

(09:57):
three percent. So Elmer Soda Blum did not play in
the twenty twenty three twenty twenty four season at all.
He was in Grand Rapids, so there are no lines there.

(10:19):
That's why there are no lines there. Elmer Soda Bloom
did have a war percentile ranking of seventy five percent
of the twenty two to twenty three campaign, but this
past season twenty four to twenty five, his war percentile

(10:42):
rank was just over twenty five percent, just about close
to thirty percent, if not quite on, If not quite there,
I'm saying, I'm thinking like twenty eight twenty nine percent.
But defense, his defense has declined even even well in

(11:08):
the NHL level, from about seventy six seventy seven percent
in the in twenty two to twenty three to about
twenty four percent in twenty four to twenty five, and
then you got the finishing dot right here, about twenty

(11:34):
to twenty one percent this past season twenty four to
twenty five finishing percentile. His defense has decline. Offense, his
offense is and white just about under seventy percent in
twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, about sixty eight percent

(11:57):
or sixty seven and then it went up about to
seventy seven percent the offense percentile on twenty twenty four
to twenty twenty five. So, with that being said, Elmer
Soda Bloom is actually a decent player overall. He's a

(12:20):
good He's very good in the offensive zone, just not
in his own It's not good, just not good. Not
as good as a not as good on the backcheck.
Good on the fore check, but not not as good
on the backcheck. As you can see these numbers right
these percentile numbers right there. So the Red Wings did

(12:52):
get Meson Appleton, but he's not not as good analytically
as other people may think, other Wing fans may think.
The Red Wings also re signed for the Red Wings.
Elmer soderblowm was a good, was a good re signing
because they need more goal because they need more offense.

(13:16):
And then you get the goaltending situation where the Red
Wings hired Michael Layton as goaltender's coach, replacing Alex Westland.
Layton used to play in the NHL at goal keeper
at goaltenders in goal for the Chicago Blackhawks in the past,
and then the Philadelphia Flyers, and then he and he

(13:38):
also held the AHL's all time record for career shutouts
the American Hockey League. M HM, I don't exactly know

(14:00):
his coaching history or whatever he'll be overseeing Detroit's tandem
of John Gibson and Cam Tealot. He's already had a
connection to a pair of current Red Wings players in

(14:21):
twenty ten. Yet he and James van Riemsdyke helped the
Flyers advance to the Cup Final in twenty ten, where
they lost to the Blackhawks in six games. And then
Layton's history with the Blackhawks selected by them in the

(14:42):
nineteen ninety nine an AHL Draft after rising through the
ranks of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, the Western Ontario
Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey League, originally the main
Ontario Hockey League h m hm. He also played for

(15:09):
the agel's Norfolk Admirals mm hmm. Then he played brief
stints with the Buffalo Sivers, Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators. Still

(15:34):
trying to look for yeah, yeah, I don't see. I'm
trying to read this. I'm reading this article and to
trying to find any coaching history that Lane has. I
see none, but he does have goaltender experience which can work.

(15:59):
H So we'll see where this goes from here come
the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six NHL regular season. Also,
as we move on to Pistons, they made a signing
and sign and trade official, trading Dennis Schroder and a

(16:22):
twenty twenty nine second round draft pick to the Sacramento
Kings for a protected twenty twenty six second round draft
pick and a player trade exception worth up to fourteen
point three million dollars, So that player trade exception could
be anybody in the NBA. The rumor. I got a

(16:46):
rumor last week that the Pistons were working out, or
at least trying to work out, a three team sign
and trade involving Dennis Schroder and Malik Monk. The Denver
Nuggets are the third team. We're the third team involved.
Daro Saik and Jonas valencion Us are the two were

(17:07):
the two players involved. The were the two other players involved.
So now now I was reading on x the latest
tweets about Malik Month from from people in general, all
people in general posting about it, and the consistence, the

(17:32):
consensus opinion seems to be no Milik Month. The Pistons
didn't want him, but nothing is official yet. Dennis Shorder
is officially going to the Sacramento Kings, but the Pistons
are still waiting for that player trade exception which is

(17:53):
still worth up to fourteen point three million dollars. We're
trying to get word on that one of one fan
on one Pistons fan on exit. If the Pistons were
to sign the league month, they would not have signed

(18:16):
Caris LeVert. So that this is all the Pistons have
done prior to part two of this twenty twenty five

(18:38):
Red Wings and Pistons off season summer frenzy thus far,
and it's still the beginning of July. It's July seventh,

(19:02):
So that that's all I have for that. So as
we go to some Tigers for I bet they won
five to one earlier tonight. I'm gonna go to the

(19:24):
box score and then turn on the screen sharing one
more time before we wrap things up here. Colt Keith
three for four tonight as OPS is rising. The seven
seventy nine is average just batting average two sixty four.

(19:47):
That's really good. Zach McKinstry won for four two eighty
five eight nineteen OPS. That includes his home run earlier tonight.
Colt Keith home run two doubles also, Riley Greenow home

(20:08):
run two d five eighty eight seventy six OPS. Torkelsen
one for four two thirty five eight twenty eight OPS.
Hobby or Bias was hitting ninth tonight one for four,
two RBIs, including a home run two seventy nine average
seven sixty eight OPS. Rough night for Glaber torret Well

(20:40):
sort of just one strikeout, one walk, two seventy five
eight oh four OPS. Tray Sweeney who hit the game
winning three run home run in Cleveland that Progressive field
over three tonight two seventeen average five ninety nine. O. Psy, No,

(21:01):
that's not gonna do any good. I'm sorry. I do
want to touch on the seven to two ten inning
win yesterday in Cleveland at Progressive Field. First off, yes,
Trek School was pitching lights out, as it usually is.
Their offense was terrible until the tenth inning, but the

(21:29):
top of the ninth Tigers had Zach McKinstry on third
a one to two count on Parker Meadows. Emmanuel Classe
threw a wild pitch under the catcher five hole and
the catcher couldn't find it. McKinstry took advantage, ran like
hell toward home Playton scored the tying run. Now, some

(21:56):
people on X I'm not gonna name anyone thought that
McKinstry should be an All Star just because of that. Well, well,
first of all, it his case for being an All
Star should be based on his statistics right here two

(22:19):
eighty five eight nineteen ops, and not just the wild pitch.
He didn't. He didn't magically create the wild pitch. He
didn't magically cause it. He was just taking his lead.
Emmanuel Classe throw a terrible pitch and McKinstry just scored
and took advantage that. That's the luck of the draw.

(22:39):
That's part of the game. I mean, seriously, people want
to go nuts on a wild pitch. Man, I was
thrilled to see it too, but it was a luck
of the Drawers got very lucky with that wild pitch.

(23:08):
And then the top of the tenth I dining Tray
Sweeney a three run home run, Matt Bieling with an
RBI triple, and then Riley Green at to run home run.
Both Sweeney and Green went opposite both went the opposite way,
hitting both hitting left from the left hand side. Sweeney's

(23:32):
home run was the winner. As I mentioned before, Green's
two run home run was just extra icing on the cake.
After Feelings RBI triple scoring Labor Torres and with the
Dodgers losing, the Tigers now have the best record in

(23:59):
all of Major League Baseball, right all right now, it's
now two games ahead of the Astros and Dodgers. As
we take a look at the scores, I think the
Dodgers just lost again tonight. It was oh man, the
Brewers annihilated the Dodgers nine to one. Wow. So the

(24:24):
Brewers are are coming on strong. They're fifty one and forty.
Let's take a look at the division. Oh my goodness,

(24:53):
where is there? Where are the winning streaks? Brews are
three games back of the Cubs in the NL Central.
Taking a look at the wild Card, the NL Wildcard
Brewers hold the second wild card spot, just a game

(25:13):
behind the Mets for the first wildcard spot. The rate
in general the race is very very tight, but of
course the Tigers are gonna definitely take the American League
Central Division fourteen games ahead, fourteen games ahead of the
Royals and Twins. The Guardians are sixteen games back. The

(25:34):
rest of the Yale Central is the al Comedy Central.
But the Tigers at the best record in all Major
League Baseball at fifty eight and thirty four. Forget about
the White Sox are thirty and sixty one, twenty seven
a half back. They've already been eliminated by Now there's

(25:55):
the street levels of one, two straight, six and four
in their last ten. Tigers are seven and three in
their last ten. The Tigers have won fourth straight. They
swept the Guardians. Of course, they beat the Rays tonight

(26:15):
Tampa Bay Ray's at America Park. Kyler Montero taking a
look at his stats, just one iron run on four hits,
six innings, pitch, one walk, four strikeouts as Era is
lord of three seventy seven taking a look at his whip.

(26:40):
That's this web page loads here of one thirty four whip.
One thirty four whip is lowered the one thirty four.
I do want to take a look at Zach m
McKinstry if I may mtkinstry hitting in the three hole,

(27:07):
the three spot, My goodness. McKinstry, from what I read
on X was struggling in April and May. But June
and July he's had a phenomenal month and people want

(27:28):
to try to make a case for him for him
being an All Star. Well, his last thirty games three
sixteen average three forty nine one base five point forty
one slugging. That's clearly a nine hundred flat ops. It's

(27:53):
last fifteen games three forty eight average three sixty on
base six point thirty slugging. That's nine that's a nine
to ninety ops. And last seven games three oh four
three point thirty three on base six oh nine slugging,
So that's uh ninety two of an LPs. So there's

(28:19):
a slight decline there, uh game logs mm hmm, yeah, yeah, mckidstry. Right,

(28:44):
all of his uh now our season he's has he's
had ups and downs, from peaking to over three hundred
almost four hundred three seventy one after April ninth against
the Yankees and then declining down to two fifty as

(29:04):
low as two fifty four April, two fifty four after
April eighteenth, and then three fourteen April twenty back up
to three fourteen and April twenty first three, back to
three eleven April twenty third, April twenty six, three sixteen

(29:27):
April twenty six, three twenty five, that's a double header.
Then three twenty six April twenty ninth three that's an
a three thirty eight average in April four to twenty
one on base four eighty slugging. That's a nine zho

(29:53):
nine ops total in April. Then you see that McKinstry
is cheating around the two eighty average two seventy something

(30:16):
in May and then lowers back down to two sixty
nine May twenty six and then two two twenty two
sixty six May thirtieth. His total stats are in mayor
two hundred, two hundred banning average two eighty nine on

(30:40):
bas three thirty eight slugging. But yeah, he's yeah, he
his May. His month of May was was rough. That's
six twenty seven. It's a six twenty seven oak just
to six twenty seven ops for Zach McKinstry in May

(31:05):
just a two hundred banning average flat. That's a decline
right there. That that could that could tell you why
he's not quite an all star material. He's not quite
consistent enough. June three twenty one average or after June

(31:28):
three twenty one average, they hit well. That his total
June statistics three twenty one average, three twenty one average,
three fifty three on base five thirty eight slugging, So
that is a that is an eight ninety one OPS,
which is which is good, not quite great, but at

(31:54):
least good. But here in the month of July three
h four average, thirty thirty three on base percentage, six
h nine slugging. So if you total these up, it
would be a nine to two OPS in July thus far.

(32:21):
So we'll see where that goes again. McKinstry just needs
to be a little bit, just needs to be more
consistent month by month with his offense. As of late,

(32:42):
he has not made any dumb base running mistakes as
of late compared to earlier this season, so but that
can tell you why he's uh, not quite making the
All Star Game unless he's unless he becomes a replacement

(33:07):
for an injured player or a player that's absent due
to other matters, whether it's personal or emergency something like that.
It could be anything. So I'm going to take a
sip of my water here and now the what We've

(33:30):
learned segment What do we learn in this episode of
the Michigan Sports Truth Podcast, Mason Appleton analytically, analytically isn't
as good of a free agent signing by the Red Wings.
Like we said, his offense percentile was good, but his

(33:53):
goal percentile just twenty three percent, like I said, has
even strength, defense just forty not good, and even strength,
but his penalty killing you. It could be a bit
of an asset from what I've read on X. But analytically,

(34:19):
his uh uh, his strengths and strengths and weaknesses and flaws,
so that that makes him not as good of assigning
by the Red Wings. And then the Pistons are still
trying to find a good player for Dennis Schroeder and
the player trade exception worth fourteen point three million dollars.

(34:42):
It could still be. It could still be Malik Monk
or somebody would just have to keep our eyes open.
And then Zach McKinstry, with his rough May month of
May at the at the plate just two hundred average
an ops of under seven hundred could be the reason

(35:09):
why Zach McKinstry is not an American League All Star.
