(00:46):
Truth Detective. Welcome, Don, Welcome to another episode of the
Michigan Sports Truth Podcast. Got just Red Wings in Football,
college football, and the Midden to preview. Yes, the Pistons
finish their preseason, but I'll get to them later and

(01:07):
preview them. But but our disclaimer says reads, if you
can't handle any news, stats, research, or criticism regarding any
of our teams, then stay completely away from the from
the show and its comment section at all times. If

(01:30):
you're too arrogant to learn anything, and especially just to
be a Homer, a party favorite, clown, and a tool,
you're absolutely irrelevant to this podcast. So another edition of
As the Wing Wheel Turns. The Red Wings beat the

(01:51):
beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers four to one,
and then beat the Tampa Bay Lightning two to one
in overtime to improve the four to one at h
m hm mm hmm. First off, let's get to the
Panthers victory. Victory victory over the Panthers. Mason Appleton red
hot as usual, red hot. He's been red hot, three

(02:13):
goals on this season already. H m hmm. Now in
five games we'll get he didn't score any tonight, but
score two against the Florida Panthers. Taking a look at

(02:36):
the Red Wings. As I mentioned before, there we go.

(02:59):
Hm so man, the Red Wings have now won four straight.
There are four to one and oh after their ugly
five to one loss up five other ugly five and
five to one loss to the Montreal Canadians and their
season opener at Little Seasons Arena, They've only played one

(03:22):
road game thus far. That's against the Toronto maypleaf So
we went and I went over it already, and the
Red Wings just keep finding ways to win as of
right now. Mm hmm. I gotta hand it to them

(03:45):
as we uh as I activate the share screen on
on stream yard mm hmm, there we go. So Mason

(04:06):
Appleton two goals right there, won two. Patrick Kane won
the power play goal. Brad Marshan the only goal, but
he made a mistake leading to the Appleton empty net
goal and then rasp Musen empty net goal for Icing
on the cake. Third period didn't look too competitive in

(04:38):
terms of shots on goal between the Panthers and Red Wings.
Panthers out shot the Wings seven to five. Cam Talbot
made twenty saves out of twenty one shots. As we
take a look at the box score, h Alex Dabrink

(05:07):
had picked up two assists. Dylan Dylan Larkin picked up
two assists. Yeah, Michael Rasmussen a goal and an assist.
Mm hmm. More Excider with an assist. Where the heck

(05:31):
is mesa, there he is, there's Appleton with his two goals.
So h not not a good not a bad game
by the Red Wings against against the defending the defending
back to back Stanley Cup champion Panthers, and then they

(05:54):
uh beat the Lading in overtime two to one. Tampa
Bay came in favored in terms of the money line
and again and favored by the spread. John Gibson started

(06:15):
and Gold for tonight and got made thirty two saves.
Look at this, though, outshot nineteen to six in the
third period, not twenty to six, and it's nineteen to six,
and that's that's just not acceptable in that game, especially

(06:39):
when when the Red Wings led one nothing through forty
minutes of play. This just cannot happen. The Red Wings
outshot the Lightning twenty two to eleven through the first
two periods of play, and then this the Lightning finally

(07:00):
tied up with three p forty three left Moser from
Henman and Geege. At sixteen seventeen, Axel Sandine Pelica opening
the scoring with his first NHL go endpoint, assisted by
Larkin and Appleton. Mason Appleton gets another point right there.

(07:22):
So Appleton not only can score but also facilitate here
and he showed right there. And then Dylan Larkin off
a saved by John Gibson, assisted by j. T. Kompfor

(07:48):
Larkin scored on a breakaway, and he had like a
lot of ice time. He was tired, but he kept
on going. He didn't care. He kept on going and
going and going the energizer bud and he didn't even
care how tired he was. Look at Larkin's ice time
twenty three and twelve. Wow, that is high. That has

(08:12):
loaded time on ice man a goal and an assist,
the work all that workload by a Lark and he
finally get and he and he just had to put
it away himself and he did on a breakaway. Gibson

(08:33):
stood tall in net for Detroit six penalty minutes each.
But the main story is just this low scoring affair.
When you're up one nothing and you're getting badly outshot
in nineteen to six, you know something is wrong with

(08:55):
your third period play and you have to make adjustments.
There's yeah, there's nothing else to be shown there but

(09:17):
the Red Wings for one, and oh m hmm. In
the standings, the Red Wings first in the not so Atlantic,
the Mixed Atlantic division. The Montreal Canadians right there are

(09:38):
four to one as well. The Red Wings hold the
tiebreaker thus far, both the Red Wings and Canadians have
a each have a gold differential of plus four. The
Toronto Maple Leafs three to two and oh they got

(09:59):
the Pittsburgh Penguins of the Boston Bruins three two and
oh six points m hm. And the Metropolitan Division the
Hurricanes unbeaten four oh and oh eight points. But they're
not gonna go nobody. Nobody's gonna go eighty two oh
and oh, forget forget that. This is not this is

(10:29):
not video game land. Okay, just letting you guys know
about that. But but hey, the Red Wings October nineteenth,

(10:53):
three pm against the Edmonton Oilers. That's Sunday, that's my
that's my dad's birthday, by the way, should be an
interesting matchup. Taking a look at the standings, mm hmm,

(11:19):
the Edmonton Oilers two to one and one five points,
fourth place in the Western Conference wildcard spot. The Edmonton
Oilers are the defending Western Conference champions yet again. The
back to back Western Conference champions lost to the Florida

(11:39):
Panthers in the and two straight Stanley Cup Final appearances.
Mm hmm. Ken Holland, of course, Connor mcnavid, Leon Drich Seidel,
Ryan Nugent Hopkins Hyman still on this team, and then

(12:08):
the Red Wings head to Buffalo on Wednesday on TNT
to face off of the Buffalo Savers at Key Bank Arena.
They had back to back road games against the Savers
and Islanders Wednesday and Thursday, Buffalo at seven thirty, the

(12:34):
New York Islanders at seven and then a home road
a home road doubleheader Saturday the twenty fifth and Tuesday,
October twenty eighth, both on FS both on FanDuel Sports
Network Detroit against the Saint Louis Blues at home on

(12:57):
October twenty fifth, and then on on the road in
Saint Louis at Enterprise Center against the Blues on the
twenty eighth. Then the Wings go out West King's Ducks

(13:24):
and then you get the Sharks and Golden Knights before
they head back home against the New York Rangers on
November seventh, and then the Blackhawks coming to town November ninth.
Need I go on and on, So there are these

(13:47):
so hats off to the Red Wings. Thus far four
and one, anything could happened, and there are no guarantees
in the season, but the Red Wings are red hot
right now. They are now let's go to the New

(14:10):
Michigan Wolverines segment called the Wolverines World Beat. The Wolverines
kickoff Saturday at New Non Fox against the Washington Huskies.
Washington's offense it's fifty four point four percent on third down,
which is ranked tenth in the country and has scored
thirty nine point two points per game, ranked twenty seventh

(14:33):
in the FBS. As I take a look at as
I share the screen again, let's take a look at

(14:54):
the game cast. Michigan is projected to beat Washington. According
to the ESPN Matchup Predictor, warings are four and a
half point favorites. Justice Haynes is questionable. I think Michigan

(15:21):
coming off of thirty thirty one to thirteen loss at
USC so uh just just one in just the one interception,
one fifteen to twenty four Washington coming off of thirty

(15:43):
eight to nineteen win over Rutgers on Friday last Friday,
October tenth. Williams Where the heck is he? Oh? Yeah?

(16:07):
Demand Williams one six and twenty eight yards, ten touchdowns,
just one interception, seventy four point one percent completion percentage.
Williams is a is a sophomore four touchdown passes in

(16:28):
conference play thus far through twenty one of twenty seven
for four hundred and two and he can carry the
ball too, thirteen rushes thirteen quarterback keeper rushes for one
hundred and thirty six rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

(16:48):
So demand Williams is very, very dangerous at quarterback in
his own pocket. You can also his top target, Desmond Roebuck.
Desmond Roebuck four catches for one hundred and eight yards

(17:11):
thus far, Roebuck a freshman two hundred and twenty seven
receiving yards against the Big ten and three hundred and

(17:38):
thirty one yards total this season on eighteen k on
eighteen catches, two touchdowns, two touchdown catches. So Michigan could
use justice Haynes right about right right about now, right
right about today. And neither Washington nor Michigan right here,

(18:04):
as you can see, they are nowhere to be seeing
the top the AP top twenty five pole in college football.
So that's the Wolverines world beat the Spartans span. The

(18:24):
Spartans head to Bloomington, Indiana to play for the breast
Spittoon against the number three Indiana Hoosiers Saturday at three
point thirty on Peacock, and yeah, that's a complete mismatch.
The Hoosiers unanimously outmatched the Spartans in all categories. Yards
per game, points per game, everything, points allowed per game.

(18:50):
Forget it. It's not even worth paying up paying for
Peacock to watch that garbage on paper at least. And
then we and then then we then we get the Lions.
They're home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night

(19:10):
Football on a Monday Night football first of a Monday
night football doubleheader, kicking off at seven at Ford Field
on ABC. Lions defensive tackle Allen McNeil has set to return,
and the Buccaneers they love to pass the ball. Buccaneers

(19:35):
quarterback Baker may Mayfield, of course, obviously loves to pass
the ball, and it's looking to take advantage of a
weak spot in the Lions defensive unit, especially the secondary
specifically which is out which is without Kirby Joseph who
was who is not practice with a knee injury, and
suspended Brian Branch but still but their secondary still has

(19:59):
rock Ya seen in Amik Robertson as past defenders or
receiving defenders more specifically, and the Lions wave safety Laurence Strickland,
and they've resigned offensive lineman Kingsley Equa Con and defenseman

(20:25):
or defensive lineman Chris Smith to the practice squad and
sign quarterback Kendall Fuller from the Miami Dolphins to the
practice squad. So they're gonna try to They're gonna activate
those guys all to the active roster prior to Monday

(20:46):
Night's game at Ford Field against the Bucks, who look
to take advantage of a week in injury riddled Lions
receiving defense. They could but can also get Terry On
Arnold back at cornerback. He just needs to lay off
the penalties and start playing the ball and not the body.

(21:11):
That's that's the main thing in the n that's the
main concept in the NFL. According to the rules, you
can't you can't make any content. I know it's tough.
Can't make any contact or much contact blaytant let alone

(21:32):
blatant contact in the NFL against opposing receivers because otherwise
you're going to get penalized. And yes, as I mentioned before,
Lee McNeil said to return, which is extra assistance for
the passing rush, including pass rushing department, including the including

(21:56):
Ian Hutchinson and al Quitein Muhammad and DJ Reader who
also who is also at limited practice, and the Buccaneers
have nine players on injured reserve. Also, wide receiver Chris
Godwin with a fibula and running back Bucky Irving shoulder

(22:22):
and foot are both doubtful. Wide receiver Mike Evans is
questionable with a hamstring injury and didn't practice Friday, so
he might not play well, but well, we'll keep an
eye on things. We'll keep an eye on the injury report.

(22:44):
Tampa Bay's offensive offensive unit will be shorthanded either way
due to injuries, but the interesting the interesting unit matchup
will be the short handed Tampa Bay offensive unit led
by Baker Mayfield versus Detroit short handed secondary receiving defensive
corps plus the returning Allie McNeil adding assistance to the

(23:06):
pass rushing department to the Lions pass pass rushing department.
So we look for the Buccaneers offensive unit to stay
as aggressive and always aggressive as always and exploit Detroit's
weaknesses weakness in the secondary, but also for Elle McNeil
to come out hungry, angry, highly re energized, and defensively

(23:29):
or and rather definitely determined to disrupt Baker in his pocket.
And another thing is can the Lions offensive unit bounce back?
The receivers need to try to catch their passes and
not drop them. Lions offensive units scored only seventeen points

(23:52):
in Kansas City on Sunday Night football. It has nothing
to do with the defensive unit being held by Chiefs
offensive players and who get away with it and stuff.
Has nothing to do with that. Your offense just did
not perform up to par up to the expect up

(24:16):
to our expectations. The offensive li like it not, did
not get screwed at all. Think about that. Yeah, And
even so, just because the Chiefs get away with holding
penalties and don't get penalized at all doesn't mean doesn't

(24:40):
mean you lost because of the of officiating. You still
didn't perform up to up to expectations. Which leads me
to this. The entire Lions team needs to start following
and understanding the rules in this professional league. Stop bitching
about the rules and the officiating in the league, and

(25:02):
stop being arrogant trying to play the game your your
own way. Follow the rules, play clean and competitive, and
competently and maybe if you're if you're lucky enough, you'll
even win the game running away. You'll have no problem
beating up, beating up on any opponent on the scoreboard,

(25:25):
not physically. You'll have no problem with any opponent if
you play the game the right way in this league,
whether you like it or not. So what did we learn.

(25:54):
M of course, the Red Wings have won four straight.
They are a team. They're a team that it's a
force to be reckoned with. The Wolverines are trying to
bounce back from their laws at usc. Of course, they
need to. Their offensive unit needs to get their act together,

(26:15):
just like the Lions. The Spartans. The Spartans football team
entirely is definitely outmatched by Indiana in all categories. And
the Lions, of course need to stop being a bunch

(26:36):
of a bunch of arrogant men. And if they do that,
they'll get back to their winning ways. So that's what
we've learned in this episode of the Michigan Sports Truth Podcast.
