It's great to have you on board as well too. Don.
You're a multi timeed country singer songwriter, born and raised
on a dairy farm in New Zealand. Now you're in Cleeveland, Australia.
You're heavily involved in country music scene in New Zealand,
Australia and the US. You began your career in early age.
Spanning over forty years. You have numerous follows on YouTube,
Spotify and many digital platforms. You also had some other

(02:27):
releases out there like Let It Be Me, for the
Life of Me, One for the Road Only, Time Will
Tell ninety Proof and I can tell you got some
of that. And also we got your new release called
Susan which also features holds your Head High. We'll talk
about that and before getting all that done, tell us
I first got started? Tell you what are yeah? Tell
us how you first got started?

Speaker 6 (02:47):
Go well, sorry, you speak real far.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
That's my job.

Speaker 6 (02:54):
So yeah, okay, years and years ago, we know, being
brought up on the dairy farm. Actually, my mom and
dad had two albums, two two long playing albums. One
was a Slim Whipman album and one was a Jim
Reeves album. That's all they had, and that's all I
started playing there. And I started getting in spinning in

(03:15):
them listening to that country music at about the age
of ten eleven and really loved it. Really sort of
got to like that sort of music. And that's basically
how it all started. And then then I started, you know,
milking the cows. Milking the cows happened my dad milk
the cows and singing in the cowshit.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
The cows are about milking and singing. That's a really
good combination.

Speaker 6 (03:45):
But I don't know whether my dad ever thought saying,
because I was that's where I was burning how to yoga.
I was trying to imitate Slim Whipman in those days,
and I did. I managed it in the end, but
I think I think my dad might had a you know,
he didn't. You sort of think it was real good
for the cows, you know. But anyway, Yeah, so that's

(04:06):
how I got started and it went from there. Basically,
when I was about fifteen on the farm, I found
out that just across a couple of hours across over
the top of the mountain into another into another province
in New Zealand, there was a country music club happening,
and so I started going to that and that's how

(04:27):
the first time up on stage was at the country
music club. And that was really great grounding for me
to get out there and well, yes, try and you know,
prove myself. Get out it seems like I can sing
on stage is and all that sort of stuff, you know,
and yeah, and it worked. It was great, was great grounding.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Oh my gosh, that is something fifteen years old, you
make the stage and making a big presence and was
the one exact, precise moment that simply influenced you into
what you're doing for rest of your.

Speaker 6 (04:58):
Career the exact Yes, that's a good question. I mean
I used to well, I can I say when I was,
when I was, when I was coming up through the
country music field and getting to really love the music,
which I did. It was my my favorite, my favorite artist,

(05:18):
and at that particular time was when I got a
hold of a Conway Twitty album and I started playing
Conway Twitty stuff and listening sitting down and listening to
it and basically getting high on that music because it
was just so beautiful and the steel playing and that
sort of thing. And so I did. I was actually

(05:41):
in after a time I used to do. I did
a couple of television shows in New Zealand at that stage,
and and they teuted me as New Zealand's Conway Twitty
because I was able to sort of get that like
his sound, you know, a very name, and that's basically

(06:03):
that was I think that was the opinion where I
got the love of country music from was actually from
Conway Wooty. I must put all on him. And then
of course it all, it all branched out from there
like other other artists, uh uh, Charlie Pride for instance,
still love Charlie Pride, Hank Williams Junior, love Him, Love

(06:23):
You Waylon and Merle Haggard and George Jones. And that's
where my forte lies within within that sort of jail.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Oh my gosh, that's something you've been influenced by. Slim
Wetman and of course Jim Reeves and can we tweety
George Jones, and besides those, who is some other favorite
singer songwriters and musicians growing up you are other ones.

Speaker 6 (06:47):
The other ones, oh oh, Ellen Jackson, Ellen Jackson, of course, yep,
you know. But but one of the biggest influences in
my in my in my career, in in how I
basically got my voice ses to where I wanted it was.

(07:08):
I can't go past the fact that Alvis Brinsley was
my biggest influence. You know, I like, I just I
just love to his voice. I loved his music. I
loved ease from you know, the way you put drama
in so much of these songs, and and just huge
finishes and that sort of thing. And of course that's
where I've got all that from too, So he's one
of he was one of the biggest influences, I guess

(07:32):
in the overall musical field.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, oh yeah. And of course you're also a big
influence in Australian New Zealand country music, and you got
your own as well. Talk about your releases plus your

Out Today and Sports, The Mike Whiitner shawan ankor fem PayPal,
and The Mike Widners Show dot com. You heard the
amazing multi talented Don Allen, best known as the Don
here on the Mike Waidners Show being involved in the
country music scene New Zealand, Australia and the US. He's
been doing it for forty years as well. And before
we get to some of your music, tell us about
your journey going from New Zealand over to Queensland.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Yeah, I actually I actually left New Zealand to go
to America and no nadyat ivy with a young family,
had a two year old, a two year old and
a two month old girls, and I decided I wanted
to go to the States, but no other reason. I
just was infatuated with the States, and so yeah, we

(11:11):
talked off. I took off first and I got over
there a couple of weeks earlier than my wife and
kids at that stage, and I heard of a couple
of guys in sacrament I that a couple of Kiwi
guys that from New Zealand that were had started the
business in a hi roofing system over there in California.

(11:35):
So I got ahold of them and so and I
went to there and actually worked with them.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
For a while.

Speaker 6 (11:43):
But of course with having a young family, I wanted
my main reason to go to go to the USA
was to get to Nashville, and I never quite did that,
and that in those days, I did meet up with
with a guy with a guy called Ron Schmick. He
had easy Living country television show actually in those days,

(12:05):
and I did. I did a talent show and Ron
Speck was there and long with Joey Mitchell of Crack Radio.
That stage had yeah out of Sacramento, and so I
did a TV show with them also, which was great
in those days. I won the talent show and then
they show, so you know, and so it was a

(12:27):
matter of we I was based in Sacramento, but never
then got the time to go through to n Asville,
and I sort of and then at the end of
the day year old at immigration authorities over there decided
I'd stayed there long enough they wouldn't anymore, so I

(12:48):
had to I had to get out of the country.
But anyway, so our way back to New Zealand we
had a stopover in Australia and that stopover has now
been like about forty five years.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Wow.

Speaker 6 (13:02):
Yeah, never I never got back to New yal I'm
not going back there quite often to New Zealand, but
I never got back there to live again, you know,
which I don't I don't know. I don't regret when
Australia has been great for me, you know, and I
have my my new lady here in Australia.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Here, come on over, don't be.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
That, and so you know, we're very happy.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Yeah, all right, we're glad to have you on and
tell us a bit about what you do. Well, I
guess not so perfectly. Okay, So.

Speaker 6 (13:40):
She was gonna, yeah, he wanted to tell you. I'm
gonna tell you what what you do? She bosses me
around basically, that's basically it. Fine, yeah, all.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Right, or we're glad you got to show up and everything.
So whether I have you on as well, maybe you
guys can sing and everything well and speaking singing too
before we get to your Lena Susanne. Plus i'll hold
your hat high. You also have let it be me
for the life of me. Also one for the road
only time all Tewel and ninety Proof and tell us
more about those.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Yeah, it's all been a great experience, all the albums
that I've done, you know, we they Let It Be
Me was my first album, and it was and then
come up exceptionally well. It was recorded here in Australia,
and I think the second one was too. But and
then and then I did. I did two albums in

(14:32):
the States in Nashville, and now I'm recording back with
it with a recording company here in Australia on the
Gold Coast actually, and they they've been doing such great
work for me. They were the ones that have produced
Hold Your Head High and also produced now Suzanne. And

(14:55):
we've got another couple that are ready to come out.
I've got one that I did and you that we
will be. We will be next week hopefully we will
get that out. That particular one. They have done such
a great.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Job of those.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Oh yes, that's the one that is a remake and
there is a good chance that will get play. At
the end of the audio interview, I'm glad you brought
that up. So I was the one to listen to
a preview and it is a smash you talked about
Susan as well and tellus mo about about the song
and one Spira to rate it.

Speaker 6 (15:26):
You see, we tried's n an actual factor, Susanne. I'm
so so happy for with that one. At the moment,
it's number two on the charts over here, hopefully hitting
for number one. So that's that's that's something pretty big.
And but that was actually I didn't write, Suzanne. That

(15:47):
was a friend of mine had got a band, a
rock and old rock and roll type band, you know,
and they bought a CD into I had a honky
tonk at one stage, and they bought a CD into
a honky tod Get asked, yeah, I can ever listen
to it? And that particular song was on the CD
and it was written by one of the boys out

(16:08):
of the band. I said, well, I wouldn't want recording
that one if you wouldn't, Yeah, go ahead, just do it,
you know. So that's what we did. And he's he's
heard it since and he's just wrapped with that without
what we've done with the song, and it reminds it
does remind us all of a little bit of the
Mavericks type style. In particular, we could hear the Mavericks

(16:32):
doing that. But yeah, so we're just we're just so
happy with that whether we have. As I say, this
next one is obviously a remake of a huge gospel
song that's coming out. But and then after that one
we have another another one which is in the vein
of Suzanne, but a different song again, but it'll be
just as popular as Suzanne. Hold Your Head High is

(16:53):
another kettle of fish that I went on tour when
I first came to Australia. I hooked up with some
of the bigger name dacts here at that stage, and
we went on tour of the New South Wales basically,
and just in the bus and the two of us
going around looking at all the countryside, and I wrote

(17:15):
the song how Hold Your Head High, which was basically
my one and only Australiana type thing that I've written,
and so it didn't compass what I saw basically, and
then I also involved the return soldiers that you know,
the diggers and that sort of thing. As far as
we are concerned to you down Under, they were diggers,

(17:37):
they were called, and so that that song, we we
thought we had a number one with that particular song,
but Australia thought different. For some reason, and yet it's
still very very popular overseas in New Zealand, they're playing
it even, you know, like so we just we just

(17:57):
can't understand what we're what went wrong in that one,
and we still play they're still there're still getting airplay now.
But it's just yeah, one of those ones that we
I love the production was done with the what was
done with the song at the end of the day,
it was great in the video. We had a we've
got a live video out on that one also. But yeah,
so it sits there. I think it'll I think it

(18:19):
will go again. I think somebody will pick it up
over here and say, oh we could we could do
put that in front of a TV show or something,
you know.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Oh yeah, I think that's a great idea as well.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
You know.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
And of course if there's other music we haven't to
hit uponn tells about those and one inspired to write them.

Speaker 6 (18:38):
Sorry.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
If if there's other music we haven't mentioned, like any
songs RA think that that has not been made, Yeah,
and to write them.

Speaker 6 (18:47):
Yeah, We've got like a lot of a lot of
our stuff on on on the on these albums. There's
always like a song called Talking Dirty, which I wrote
to record a talking dirty in in the early nineties,
about ninety one. I recorded it. Now when that when
that was released here in news in Australia, they wouldn't

(19:11):
no one would play it because it was a little
too promiscuous in those days. And so then when I
when I did my first number second album, I think
it was in Nashville, we re recorded that again and
it shot the number one. You know. It was just
one of those songs that they had to be out

(19:32):
there but nobody was. And then and then yeah, I
made of mine over the States. Actually he wrote a
song and what was that called maybe that let Her Up? Yeah,
a song called Liquor Up and great song, great, great

(19:55):
up tempo type thing and just as just a great
lyrics the whole thing. So and that one, that one
actually I was picked up by cash Box over there.
That went number one on the nine Country Country John
Cash which I was still in the face of my captain.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
My god, you got some great stuff. And what else
