Brittal in Nashville and O six recorded your first CD

and the US. You know, I had some previous releases
like Hello, Hallelujah, Through the Rain and also Debbie Kelly
Music Collection and more. And we'll be talking about some
previous releases and three will be playing talk about including
(03:15):
one end of the show before getting Debbie tell us
our first cut start.
Speaker 8 (03:20):
Well, Hello, how are you?
Speaker 7 (03:24):
My my first starting I was young, you know, like
like you, like you were saying that I was in
all these acting and everythings like that. So singing became
like a passion to me. And now that I'm in
the older part of the people, singing is is what
(03:47):
makes me happy. Singing is what brings me joy, and
I hope joy to the people that are listening to.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Me, you know.
Speaker 7 (03:55):
And I have like you saying I have new music
coming out. The one that you're going to be playing
at the end of the show is You're more than
I totally expected. That's I got that wrong. But Duke
Johnson is the other duet artist on this this song
(04:18):
Ry August. He is a multi platinum songwriter himself wrote
for the oak Ridge Boys, so he was the one
of the co writers the main writer per Se on
this song. So we are so gratefully blessed that, you know,
he's been so generous to us to give us some
songs that you know, he has also written too. So
(04:42):
life is right now, Life is pretty good. I'm having
some fun.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
That sounds like I have a lot of fun, Daby,
And was it one precise moment to simply influence each
what do you and the rest of your career?
Speaker 7 (04:57):
Basically knowing that I was a cousin to Patsy Kline
and that she had passed so young, you know, and
had such a phenomenal voice. I mean, even to this day,
you still hear her music, you know, and when when
I sing her songs. When I was young, I used
to sing her songs too, and people, oh my god,
(05:19):
you sound just like her.
Speaker 8 (05:19):
And I'm like, I don't mean to, you know.
Speaker 7 (05:23):
I mean, I try to be me, I try to
sing how I feel, but when I do sing her songs,
it comes out sounding more and more like her, you know.
So that's kind of influenced me to continue to go
because my dream is to one day be able to
stand out the grand ole oprand and sing a song,
(05:44):
you know, to where it was one of her biggest shows.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
So and that'd be so great. How'd you find out
that you're the cousin late Patsy Kline? How'd you hear
about it?
Speaker 7 (05:55):
One of my mother's cousins they had like a family reunion,
and one of the cousins was into like the genealogy,
and she just started research and research and research and research.
And at that family reunion is when she, you know,
had all the information to give to all the cousins
(06:16):
and family and said hey. And I was seventeen at
the time, and my mom had come back and she said.
Speaker 8 (06:24):
Can you believe that we're related to passy? Kind? I'm like,
what you know?
Speaker 7 (06:29):
And I was already singing, so it kind of I
guess formed me to go more country per se, you know.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
So that's it.
Speaker 7 (06:41):
I don't hear it, is right?
Speaker 5 (06:44):
And could you'll be able to describe a bit what
Patria Klin was really like, you know, not just you
know we're hearing the press or singing at the opry
records or anything like that. Maybe just a bit about
what was she like in real life.
Speaker 7 (06:57):
I can't tell you that because I was not born
I was born three years after she had passed. But
I actually talked to Joanne Copus, which was Cowboy Coppus's wife.
I did get to meet her, and the stories that
(07:18):
she had just told me. You know what Patsy Klein
was like as a friend, and you know how she
was as a mother. In fact, I have if I
can show you this right here, and I don't knock
everything down. I have a little memorabilia a lodge thing
that I made. It did to do and it's called
(07:40):
Patsy Klein Journey.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
And in this.
Speaker 7 (07:45):
I actually have newspaper clippings that I was given from Joanne.
I have a I have all sorts of different letters
that she has done. I actually have a copy of
Patsy's will.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Okay, because you maybe bring it up for our viewers, say,
I can check out further me branp a little closer.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
So these are newspaper clippings. This is Joanne Copus. She
was the wife to Cowboy Copus, and so she was
more of.
Speaker 8 (08:20):
A friend to Patsy, you know, than that I know.
Speaker 7 (08:24):
And so it was just different little things that she
had that she actually gave to me copies. These are
letters that Patsy wrote to her when she was out playing.
So I mean just just to be this, this is Joanne.
This is when I got to meet her right there.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
Okay, okay, so try bramp a little closer if possible or.
Speaker 8 (08:53):
You see that.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Okay, it looks like what we can say that was amazing. Wow.
Speaker 8 (08:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (08:59):
So I mean just being able to get some memorabilia,
you know, from somebody that actually knew Patsy, you know,
so it kind of filled in like the blank spots
for me that I didn't know, you know, as as
a close knit you know kind of thing. But it's
(09:22):
just just being able to meet somebody that knew Patsy
is is mind blowing.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
Really and certainly does one of the best in the
business as well too, and we all miss Patsy. Kline emphasides,
you'll Patsy Klin. Some of those who are some of
your favorite singer songwriters and musicians growing.
Speaker 7 (09:40):
Up mine, Yeah, I would say my I did a
lot of show tunes singing as the child, you know,
so a lot of the musicals was my favorite. I
didn't really have too much of a favorite songwriter or
artists until I went into the country genre, and then
(10:03):
I would have to say it would be Reba McIntyre,
Dolly Parton, Tisha Yearwood, Celine Dion.
Speaker 8 (10:12):
There's just so many.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
But I there for a while I kind of saw
myself as Gretchen Wilson, kind of the the Ooh, I'm
going to be the rough, kind of tough, you know.
Oh yeah, but yeah, it's it's it's been full circle.
Speaker 8 (10:28):
But I would say just a handful of them, you know.
And I love to perform.
Speaker 7 (10:34):
I love to entertain, So singing is you know, these
other artists are keeping me happy by doing what they're
doing and making us want to do what they are doing.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
So and so and so you're doing a great job
as well too. And of course you be in the
movies as well. To you opening up a dance studio
and you travel in Nashville. You've got some music out there.

You're here with the amazing ward winning singer songwriter from
Southern California, Wie Kelly here on the Mike Waders Show
before we talk about summer of your music. You later
gotten to movie industry at Love and You're in the
Bad News bears Mommy Dearris and goes to Bucksley Hall,
tell us I first got involved with the movie industry.
Speaker 7 (13:42):
My mom actually had a friend that had their children
with an agent down in Los Angeles, and so she
had told my mom, you need to get your kids
in it.
Speaker 8 (13:53):
Too, you know.
Speaker 7 (13:54):
So we went down to Los Angeles and got this agent,
and so we actually did a lot of like the
background work, and then I kind of landed a really
good role on The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and that was
being able to meet Lily Tomlin was just.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Like, osh, yeah.
Speaker 7 (14:20):
She was such a wonderful, wonderful person. But if you
watch that show, in every part that you see the
grocery store scene, I'm in that area.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
So like at the very beginning of the show, you
will see a heavy set lady and a young girl
sitting next to or standing next to her.
Speaker 8 (14:43):
That young girl is me.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
I don't like that. Have to check out that movie sometime.
Speaker 9 (14:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (14:47):
Anytime you see a young girl in a tank top
and shorts and a hair and curlers, that's me.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (14:55):
I also got to meet mister Whipple on the the
Sharman commercial.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, and then the Hamburgular when they
had the McDonald's commercial with the little Hamburgler.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
I remember that. It's making me hunger hungry. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
So I mean being able to you know, go into
the movies and see what's behind the scenes. You know,
it's it's so extraordinary I mean just as a young kid,
you're like, wow, you know, this is really how they
do this. You know, because when you're a kid and
you don't understand, you watch the movie and you just like, man,
(15:36):
really does that really work that way?
Speaker 8 (15:37):
You know, So behind the scenes you see how it
really works, you know. So it's it's fascinating.
Speaker 7 (15:45):
I mean, I think if every child had a chance
to see what it's like behind the scenes of a
movie and how much it takes, how many people, how
much time, you know. I mean I worked on the
set for two weeks and I'm in like seconds throughout
the whole movie, you know, so you never know how
(16:07):
much you're going to be in there, you know. But
it's it's fun, it's it was very interesting as a child.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
And it sounds like it as well too.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
And you also opened a dance studio in Fontana, California
at nineteen.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Tell us more about that.
Speaker 6 (16:22):
I did.
Speaker 8 (16:24):
I was.
Speaker 7 (16:25):
I actually worked for the city of Fontana, teaching dancing
at their community center. And so during I only had
like maybe two days that I worked there. And then
my mom had this huge home and she had like
a three car garage. Well we took a one car
(16:47):
garage and I made it into a dance studio and
we put mirrors on the wall, and I mean that
was kind of like my hobby, but it was my
job kind of thing, you know. I just I enjoyed dancing,
I enjoyed singing, and I just wanted to pass it
on to whatever child that wanted to learn.
Speaker 8 (17:08):
Basically, you know.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
That sounds amazing as well too. Then you later moved
to Nashville and six or course or CD and got
played in several countries. Tell us about going from Fontana
over the Nashville.
Speaker 8 (17:24):
That was an experience as well.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
I mean being able to go into a studio with
studio musicians and you know, again here seeing behind the
scenes how hard it is to do an album and stuff.
Just seeing how hard the musicians work to play the songs.
You know, it was, it was really great. I loved it.
(17:49):
And with that, I was signed with a record label
that didn't work out too well, and a couple later,
a couple of years later, I got signed with another
and that didn't work out too well.
Speaker 8 (18:02):
So I'm kind of going.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Ah, you know, so I'm I'm an independent and I
just I keep doing what I do, you know, because
I love it and I just it is what.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
It is right exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
Plus you got some other releases, like some albums like Hello, Hello, Olijah,
Through the Rain and You Music Collection as well too,
and tell us more about that. Plus you got some
singles like Stand Cowgirl, Lovelah By and I Get Praise
and Niel the Cross.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Yes, So here is my latest gospel CD. And it's
called God Stays the Same. This was released last year
and it's got I believe it's got the Hello Hallelujah.
Yes it does, Hello Hallelujah, Jesus.
Speaker 8 (18:50):
Lord wait for me. Little Jimmy.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
Little Jimmy is a bluegrass song that I had gotten
from a gentleman out in Tennessee, and he and his
brother wrote the song for like five well they wrote
it in five other groups sang it, and so he
sent it to me. Me, not being a bluegrass singer,
(19:15):
I'm going, I don't know if I can do this
or not.
Speaker 8 (19:18):
You know, it's way different from what I'm used to.
Speaker 7 (19:22):
And so I sang it and I sent it back
to him and he sent me back.
Speaker 8 (19:27):
He called me.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
He says, oh my goodness, and he's crying on the phone,
and I'm like, are you okay. I'm thinking I can't
help you. I'm too far away, you know, And he
says no, he says, I absolutely have to tell you. You
recorded this song exactly how I wanted it to be,
(19:52):
how I wrote it, how I felt it when I
wrote it. And I was like, oh my goodness, you know. So,
I mean that made me feel good, not being a
bluegrass singer and then being able to make a bluegrass
writer very very happy.
Speaker 8 (20:12):
I was so, so so grateful.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
But not only that, but I do have a Christmas
CD that was released last year, so it's got some good,
wonderful little Christmas tunes on it. And I do have
three songs that were just released Duke Johnson, and the
song was called loving You was more than I Expected,
(20:37):
And that was the song that Roy August had written
instant to us.
Speaker 8 (20:43):
And so he's like, he didn't really know that.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
Duke and I, well, Duke and I had never met
until last year. We had gone to the ISSA Awards
in Atlanta, and so Duke and I had met there
last year and I told him. I said, hey, Duke,
I said, did Ray August get a hold of you?
Speaker 8 (21:03):
And He's like, no, I don't think.
Speaker 7 (21:06):
So I said, well, he's going to I said, he
wants you and I to record a duet. And he's
like really, I'm like yeah, you know. So I'm like,
oh my goodness, this is like enormous, you know. So
(21:26):
we got the tone put together and or my tech
guy did Tim Hicks, and so he got our tune
put together and I recorded it and I sent it
over to Duke. Duke and I did not go into
studio together, and Duke was in his hometown. I was
in my hometown, and we came together to be able
to get it put together and just.
Speaker 8 (21:48):
We we did a good job.
Speaker 10 (21:50):
You know.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
I think from us being a part, I think it
turned out well and I would love to do more duets.
And the other song that you have is called the Rose.
I sent that with you. That's more of your traditional
classic bit middler, but we kind of ran into a
(22:13):
little snag so we've had to change our version and
so now we're doing it a Celtic folk song.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
Oh nice, Okay.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
Yeah, So we're we're very very very very excited for
this and so we in fact, I'm in the studio
today working on it, and I think it's going to
be absolutely wonderful.
Speaker 8 (22:39):
I think it's it's in a.
Speaker 7 (22:42):
Harmony kind of thing, so and you don't really hear
harmonies anymore, you know, So we are trying to bring
that back more of the old tradition of things.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
And I think there's really good one as well too.
And of course we're got one more discussed with Debbie Kelly.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Hey, Hey, this is Ray Powers and boy, are you
in luck? Right place?
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Right time?
Speaker 5 (26:09):
Tuned into the Mike Wagner Show.
Speaker 7 (26:12):
You heard me.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
Went back to the amazing War winning singer songwriter Debbie
Kelly here on the Mike.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
We in your show.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
We'll be playing Love You was more than expected. At
the end of the audio interview, we talked about the Rose.
We also covered some of the singles feature. But there's
one more art that we haven't covered. That's Black River.
Tell us more about that.
Speaker 8 (26:33):
It is called black River.
Speaker 7 (26:35):
Yes, that song was written by Kit Bradley, and she's
a phenomenal writer. But she sent it to me and
I listened to it, you know, and at first I
was kind of confused.
Speaker 8 (26:49):
I was like, I didn't know what road to take
with this song, you know.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
So me as a.
Speaker 7 (26:58):
Singer, you kind of want to put yourself in the
writer's shoes or you try to get.
Speaker 8 (27:04):
The story across how they wrote it, right.
Speaker 7 (27:08):
So I text her and I said, hey, can you
kind of give me a background of what this song
is really about, you know, And so it was more
of releasing your stress and being kind of with one,
you know, and just being back to the realm of
(27:28):
earth and not be in all this destruction that we
have and evilness and whatever, you know, and just be
at peace basically. And so when she told me that,
I was kind of I kind of went that way,
but I didn't. I kind of went as like two
lovers that kind of lost it, you know. But then
(27:51):
when she brought that story back in, I was like, Okay,
I get it.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
I get it.
Speaker 7 (27:56):
So and then that's how Black River and I guess
there is such thing as a black river. That picture
that's on the album is I guess the original and
She said that she's been there from time to time
and it's just so peaceful.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
So it sounds very peaceful.
Speaker 5 (28:13):
Indeed, if there's other music we haven't discussed, feel free
to talk.
Speaker 8 (28:17):
About right now.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
I do have a song, a very upbeat, kind of
sassy song coming out, and it's called every Cowboys Boots
and Yeah, so I'm excited for that one too. So
between that one and the remake of The Rose, We're
(28:41):

scene and put me in the singing and kind of
made me this entertainment person that I am today.
