discovered TV and also have a media production company. You
graduate from Rutgers University College of Pharmacy, you have a
twenty five career in sales and also an advisory board
on Women's Self Institute at Rutgers Medical School. And also

(03:26):
you appeared on One True Thing and Worth World. You
have the new Bark traces the contours one man's life
or his journeys to Spirit across seven decades. The book
is called There's a Tortoise in My Hair, Not in
my soup. It's also in my hair for getting all
of Calvin tell Us. I first got started, so I went.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
To Rutgers University College Reformacy. I don't mind dating myself
in the sixties, so you can do the math as
I approach octagenarian status in another two months. But I
went to Rutgers, studied for pharmacy, graduated, Never liked it.
I never liked science, never liked physics, never liked chemistry.

(04:07):
But I got pushed into it by my mom and
I did it for twelve years and becaurse I'm a
spiritual guy. This says Journey to Spirit. One day in
nineteen eighty one, I awoke and I said to my
poor wife out there, I said, I gotta quit my profession,
and she, what do you mean? We just got married

(04:28):
what do you mean you quit? And we bought a house,
we got married, just to nineteen eighty one. I said,
I can't do this anymore. She what are you gonna do?
I said, I don't know, So I quit and just
at that second, and I had no idea, Mike, what
I was going to do with my life, because you know,
my whole life was was, you know, pharmacy, pharmacy school.

(04:49):
There was a local playhouse and they were having tryouts
for a play called Frankenstein, The Frankenstein. And I'm six'.
Five you can't tell Because i'm sitting, down But i'm
sixth month and and, UH i said to my, wife
that's its devombing. INTERVENTION i quit my. Profession now they're

(05:10):
looking for a guy to Play. FRANKENSTEIN i, Said i'm
going so you know my wife and we drove. Up
she wasn't thrilled about. It AND i auditioned for the
part of the. Creature that was nineteen eighty. One i'm
still waiting to hear IF i got the. PART i.
GUESS i GUESS i didn't get the. Part SO i

(05:33):
sat home for six, months and you, KNOW i was
getting caught up On General hospital and one life to
live all the soap operas and my wife's, teaching AND
i don'm having a grand all time watching. SOAP i
Was The Rockford files at three.

Speaker 3 (05:45):

Army your dog robbers used to get, generals you, know
bottles of cognac and and everything else they could want
during the. War and he was he was so good at.

(06:14):
That uh Uh but, Anyway uh THEN i had a
relative come to, me To, calvin you, know your wife's,
working your marriage is confoona. Part you got to do.
Something i'll get your job selling. Eyeglasses SO i didn't
never sold anything in my, life you, know know, nothing
and and UH i didn't want to do, it but
it was a matter of. Survival SO i took a

(06:36):
job selling. Eyeglasses and there was a little. Spark. YE
i like talking to, people you. KNOW i never did,
uh AND i liked talking to, people and within a
year and a HALF i got a job working for
the biggest eyeware company in the. World actually WHEN i
started with, them they were. Small. Uh they're Called Exotic
Exotica group L u X O T T i C.
A they Own lenchcrafts And pearl and Ray band and

(06:58):
everything in the eye glass. Business AND i started working with.
Them within the, YEAR i was number one in the.
Country got a job as we number one in the,
COUNTRY i would became regional manager AND i stayed there
twenty five.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Years oh my, goodness that is a long, time truly,
amazing a long time.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
LOVED i took fifty, courses fifty courses and how to,
sell because everything in life is a. Sale if you
think about, It you're with four friends and one guy
wants to go For, asian and somebody wants to go
For typhood And delhi and Your, italian and whoever wins

(07:40):
makes the sale where you wind up. Going but, ANYWAY
i learned an, awful awful lot there AND i probably
would have retired from, there except the big part of
my life Because i'm so. SPIRITUAL i Watched Castle blanket
twenty years. AGO i think we talked about. That Love
Love Castle blanker and Watch Castle. Blanker and at the

(08:04):
end of the, movie, uh you, Know bogart shoots the
bad guy and Then Claude raines picks up a bottle
of vishy, water which is Like Prince, perier you, know
kind of looks like.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
That, oh, yes that's. Right you got a book by
the same, name Vishy.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Water that's. Right so Uh claude rain is the great character.
Actor sees the word vic in. It anything in nineteen
forty two that had vic in it meant you were
like conspiring with The. Germans so he throws it in the.
Garbage the second that hits the, GARBAGE i grabbed my
head just like, this AND i, yell oh My, god
Like Fred. Sandford Remember Fred sandford? EIGHT i, remember, Yes, Blizabeth,

(08:41):
yes so uh THAT i mean that was a novelis
in my. Head never wrote anything in my, life never
Took english because everything was. Science and AND i came down,
here sat in this, chair and in five years this got.
Published Vishy, water Vishy, water that's. Right.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Yes and and a little bit about the book as well.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Too, yeah it's it's a coming of age. Story two
characters sitting on a little. Bench it's a coming of age.
Story two boys different, backgrounds really different, backgrounds become best,
friends and it's a story of their friendship and their
journey through. Life the most important, thing the most important

(09:25):
thing for, me and you, know maybe your audience IS
i always, believed always believe that somebody up, there and
that's WHY i wrote my second. Book somebody up there
put this into my head BECAUSE i never wrote anything.
Before AND i went on and, finally after ten years
of figuring out, who, why where or? When who put

(09:48):
this into my? HEAD i finally FOUND i finally found
the reason would take hours to. Explain actually it was
a woman In, minnesota a, poet who kind of helped
me figure it. Out WHEN i figured it, OUT i.
Panicked it was my grandfather who put this novel into my.
Head and this became a vehicle met Because MIKE i
retired From, lexatica and all of a, sudden, OVERNIGHT i

(10:10):
became a, journalist a, novelist another, novelist became a, broadcaster
had a CABLE tv talk, show started to teacher. Records
it was all because of. This this became a vehicle
for me to change my. Life AND i found out
this spirit in my life is my. Grandfather and AND
i panicked BECAUSE i didn't know IF i even had
a picture of, him because my mom and dad were.

(10:31):
Gone SO i jumped, up ran back, there got a,
picture and here's the picture which started me on the
road to a spiritual. Awareness so here's the. Picture that's my,
grandfather nineteen oh, Two, Newark New. Jersey and you see what's?
Ok that bottle of?

Speaker 5 (10:48):
Water oh he's one in the middle ice.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
It, yeah yeah That, no he's actually he's by my.
Finger but that on that table in the nineteen oh
two In, newark is that bottle of water that he
implanted in my vision through the mysteries of? Life oh my.
Gosh yeah, YEAH i mean powerful. Stuff and that then

(11:12):
began my journey spiritual. STUFF i MEAN i was doing
things THAT i would have never dreamt THAT i was.
DOING i, mean teaching At Rutgers are you kidding? ME
i never town anything in my life Before i'm teaching

Com we're hiting me in some self employed, author, writer
producer and co hosts Of New Jersey DISCOVER tv and
also a host of a. Podcast Calvin schwartz With there's
A tortoise in my hair here on The Mike Widner's,
show and let's get. Started first of, all how'd you
come up with that?

Speaker 1 (15:28):
Name?

Speaker 2 (15:29):
WELL i knew the kind of CHARACTER i wanted to.
PORTRAY i wanted to portray actually somebody kind of like
me who took, many many years to kind of grow and.
DEVELOP i was, slow and it took me in either
in eighth or ninth grade TILL i finally learned how
to tie my. SHOES i, MEAN i was just, slow

(15:51):
AND i didn't have great. Dexterity SO i wanted to
create a character similar to. Me and my father was
a great, athlete one of the better bay what plays
In New jersey back in the. Twenties he was really.
Good and AND i GUESS i wasn't a great athlete
and and sports, inclined even THOUGH i became, one BUT i.

(16:11):
Wasn't so the character is similar to, me not, me but.
Similar so how DO i how DO i represent and
and and And SO i imagined that my character's father
in the, book so looking at me and not being
able to walk or tie, SHOES i couldn't. Walk you
know a lot of kids walk at one years. OLD

(16:32):
i was, no not even. Close SO i made up
the Title there's a tortoise in my hair to kind
of as a metaphor from my being slow to develop, academically,
socially the whole. Thing and that's where the title came.
In and actually it's kind of cute title because you,
know tortoise and the hair and that, race and the

(16:54):
tortoise wins the, race and you, know it's it's uh
so that's HOW i can with the.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
Title that certainly is as well, Too and it's based
on a small child growing up About Cameron simmons being haunted,
beginning and of course you also had like you, know
constant threats Of vietnam drafts and also federal relationships and
more chemical. Dependency and it's also starting from that time
and working, away but then it also gets bare in the,

(17:23):
end so you'll kind of a bit early part as well,
too with you, know having like you, know a start
on that and kinds of Threat vietnam draft and fair
relationships and.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
More, YEAH i it was a hard. TIME i mean
they're all there's always hard, times you. Know growing up
growing up in the sixties was a hard time because
we At, vietnam we had civil rights was, exploding women's

(17:55):
lib was coming into to. Being we had although quite
similar you, Know democrats And. Republicans you, know it was
polarized as it was as polarized then as it is.
Now nothing's changed that. Way but for, me it's a young.
Guy it's. Hard it's it's a hard it's a hard,

(18:17):
rain As Bob dylan, saying it was a hard rain growing.
Up and so these are all the, ingredients you, know
that were inside of, me you, know growing. Up and
there was always, something there was always something nagging at.
Me you, KNOW i was so undecided what about the.
War and of COURSE i was kind of lucky BECAUSE

(18:40):
i was in school AND i transferred From Toledo university To,
rutgers and pharmacy is a five year curriculum and WHEN i,
TRANSFERRED i lost the. Year SO i was in school
for six. Years SO i, had you, know a student.
DEFERMENT i didn't have to deal with. That, nevertheless it's,
there it's, there and and you, know those things eat

(19:02):
away at, me and it ate away at my, character
and you, know and and and you, know of, course you,
Know i've had a first marriage and funny, story funny,
Story uh just improvised the. Night, uh my my first
wife AND i BEFORE i got, married we used to
fight about. Everything she wanted to go. For she wanted

(19:23):
to go to a. DINER i wanted to go for tealing.
Food we thought about everything. EVERYTHING i wanted to go
See Midnight, cowboy great, movie you, know, uh great movie
when best picture of? Her he wanted to go see you,
Know sandra. Music so, uh there was No so the
night before we got, married we were in my mom's.

(19:43):
House uh and and we had to fight some stupid,
fight no over over an, EYE i, COULD i mean
stupid and and and and she got hysterical, crying ran
into my mother's bathroom off the, kitchen and and she.
Cried then she left the house and she slammed the.
Door and it was like. Midnight we'd get married the next.
Day oh my. Gosh, Yeah AND i hope AND i

(20:06):
prayed that my mom and dad were sleeping they didn't
hear anything because it was like, midnight AND i didn't
hear anything, upstairs SO i figured it's. Okay my mom
especially didn't hear. It and so my fiancee you, know
stormed out of the house and ran, out AND, i you,
KNOW i take a deep breath and, say thank, goodness
my mom didn't hear. It and all of a, sudden

(20:26):
my mom comes in from the dining. Room she had
heard the whole. Thing oh my.

Speaker 5 (20:31):
Goodness, wow tears were dripping.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Down we're dripping down her, face crying. Start she, Says,
calvin you can't marry this girl, tomorrow and you just.
CAN'T i, Said, ma we're getting married. Tomorrow you, know,
well everything will be. Fine She's. Calvin i'm a mother
and Mothers, no you can't get. MARRIED i, said we're
getting married, Tomorrow. Ma AND i THEN i said something really, Profound,

(20:56):
mike and it was really. PROFOUND i, said you, Know,
ma it doesn't really make a difference WHO i marry,
tomorrow because my generation is getting divorced all over the.
Place so the truth, is let me go on with my,
life let me get it over, with let me do
WHATEVER i have to, do get it over get, married

(21:18):
pay my, dues and then eventually marry Somebody i'm supposed
to spend the rest of my life. With that's HOW
i got married the first.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
TIME i think that seemed to be a blueprint for today's.
Marriage it seems, like oh my, goodness, yes, yes oh my.
Gosh in, FACT i was talking to somebody at work
a long time, ago and you have these marriage, licenses
you have a really outrageous divorce, rate AND i think to.
Myself instead of marriage, license what about a marriage. Lease
it's like you sign a lease for like so many

(21:47):
years and if you, agree you sign on more and
if you break lease and the, lease it's like no hard,
FEELINGS i feel that's what it feels.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Like, yeah by the, way that's exactly. Right and you
know what that you, KNOW i think that would that would,
work and basically it's what we. Had you, KNOW i expected,
it and of course it came. True in four.

Speaker 3 (22:06):
Years, boom four years you'll be in sales and whatever
else and all that. Stuff we're here With Calvin schwartz
of there's a tourus of my, hair hair on The
Mike whitener show. Up but then also the same time
that you also had a guardian angel right by you
as well, too even three of those four.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Years, yeah the guardian angel was a powerful. Thing and
Again i'll give you some quick. Examples it's because you know,
what you can't make this stuff. Up i'll give you a, cut,
real real. Fast in nineteen seventy, FOUR i got. Divorced
nineteen seventy, FOUR i got. DIVORCED i had a. Pharmacy

(22:46):
it's not a happy guy who's living back home with my.
Parents my old room was painted pink because my sister
moved into. It oh my. Gosh, Yeah SO i wasn't
a happy. Guy and Again i've Had Guardian. ANGEL i
didn't know it until more. Recently but SO i was
at a traffic light in a Suburban New jersey town Called.

(23:08):
SPRINGFIELD i had a Little Volkswagen and this was so long.
Ago there were no seatbelts that required back. Then AND
i was at a traffic light AND i was on
the right and some guy was on the. Left it
was a red, light and he was revving his engines
like he was kind of checking the. Race uh. Huh
and you, know he gave me a gesture with his,

(23:28):
finger WHICH i then took that as a. Challenge the
light turned, green we both peeled out and AGAIN i
had no fear AND i was just one angry. Guy
and and BEFORE i know, it we were doing like
sixty five and the twenty. Five, yeah and and and
it was eight o'clock at night and the road kind of.

(23:49):
Curved he didn't see. IT i didn't see, it so
he hit. Me so when he hit, me my reaction
WAS i turned the wheel real sharp to Avoid and
when you going that fast and the volks wearing with
a low center. Gravity the car then started to roll. Over.
Uh Now i'm rolling over in the volkswag and close

(24:09):
my eyes and uh and said a little prayer out,
loud just Like i'm talking to. YOU i, said you,
know Dear, GOD i know you're gonna take. Me uh
just stop exactly WHAT i. SAID i know you're gonna take.
Me just to me. Favor just let me leave, me
have my arms and, legs don't rip anything, off just take.
Me and the car rolled over and then it was a.
Boom the car was. Crushed the car's upside. DOWN i

(24:33):
opened up eyes and you, Know i'm patting myself And i'm.
Alive oh my.

Speaker 5 (24:38):
Goodness the car.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
Started to, smoke so, UH i FIGURED i better get
out of, here AND i climbed through the you, know
the door was over my, head climbed up AND i
WAS i was. LISTENING i was. Dazed sat on somebody's
front porch because uh uh uh and and not not a,
scratch not a scratch on, me, nothing oh. My and

(25:01):
the police came and and of COURSE i. LIED i told,
him you, know some guy hit me as mon and
my own. Business uh and and and then he, said come,
HERE i want to show you. Something and he showed
me that my car went between a tree and a
pole that have been there, since like The revolutionary rewards
and old old town old. Trees and he, says you,
know if your car six inches either way he hits

(25:23):
the tree in a, pole you're you're a dead. Man
and then he said something really. Interesting he, said it would,
appear it would appear visually that the distance between the
tree and the pole your car is wider than the
distance between the tree and the. Pole so we don't
know how you got through. There and and that always

(25:43):
sat with. Me and it's, funny that's a provable thing
because the tree and the pole are. THERE i had the,
accident they're still, there and we can always measure how
why the Volks worgan. Is so that that sat with
me UNTIL i really got involved in doing this kind of,
stuff WHEN i started a piece of all these things,
together that there is some kind of a, spiritual you,

(26:04):
know element out.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
There and certainly and certainly Too and according to a,
book nineteen seventy six became a very good, year going
from seventy four to seventy, six you wind up having
a really good.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Year, yep. Yep that began to change my life. AROUND
i then met my current, wife met her my current.
WIFE i did spend some time that summer In, chicago
and actually And i'm playing some, ball AND i had

(26:38):
a girlfriend In chicago playing some, ball AND i was
a pretty good basketball, player and the powers that be
were going to arrange for me to tray for The
Chicago bulls Before Michael jordan, Obviously.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Oh, YEAH i remember watching the balls back in the.
DAY i think my dad took me To Chicago bulls.
GAMES i was, like what Artists gill more THAN i
think you. Had let's, SEE.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
I don't even.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Remember i'm trying to think those our Skill, Moore Norm Van,
Lear John menguel and those are, like you, know they
played just for. Fun it wasn't a whole serious. Ball
and of, course you, Know Michael jordan was like you,
know on her. Back then only four or five thousand
fans came To, chicago but The blackhawks were the big
thing at the time, too and Stanm, Mekida Dennis hall

(27:22):
And Tony, esposito everything like. That it didn't cariss like
you being in a stam that was a cool. Thing
but nice part sets, WELL i got to have some free,
balls try to get down to close to close To
Santa corus as much as.

Speaker 5 (27:35):
Possible nobody really.

Speaker 3 (27:36):
Cares it's only only five thousand people, show but that's, unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
Unbelievable Uh, so UH i. Finished you, know my girlfriend
AND i we kind of went in different, directions AND
i WAS i was back, here and AND i actually
had entertained thoughts of you, know backpacking and going To.
Europe you, know you, KNOW i was not happy being
single and nothing was working, out and SO i was

(28:01):
looking into, it like back back and going To. Europe
and and near the end of my time here in The,
STATES i was at A i was at a dance
In New York. City, uh AND i was telling the
bartender THAT i was From. Texas, oh my father had Oil,
wells AND i was one hoping he would introduce, me

(28:24):
you know to some. Women you, Know i'm A texan
and Oil wells and blah blah. Blah and just, like
just as soon AS i was telling, him life is so.
Funny life is a matter of a second here a second.
Year just AS i was telling, him you, Know i'm From.
Texas my father as oil. Was these two girls came
over to the bar and ONE i heard one girl, say,

(28:45):
oh this Guy vier thinks he's really cool and he
ain't From. Texas. Nah AND i heard her say, that
and it kind of annoyed. Me you, know it's like
none of her. Business and who was? She and SO i, said, there,
hey can we? Talk so we went over and sat
down on two chairs and we got married seven months.

(29:08):
Later oh.

Speaker 5 (29:09):
Wow and and that was the the girlfriend that you
knew back in the.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
Day, no this was this was. Different. Okay she just
walked over at the right, time in the right, place
and she heard me, Say i'm From. Texas and she
said to her, friend this guy in From texas and
he's not, cool and that bothered, me and SO i
asked to talk to her and got married seven months. Later,
boom we're still.

Speaker 5 (29:33):
Married how do you like? That that is so cool as?

We're, back amazing Author Calvin, schwartze there's a torus in
my hair during it's a spirit here On, mike we
on your, shelf and of course that it's basically a
road to. Redemption nineteen seventy six was a big, one
and of course you've got a firstly paved, road and
you had more great things that were ahead of you as.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
Well, yep. Yep SO i. DID i did the lexatica
group thing for for twenty five, years and then along
the way it was time to start a. Family and
we ran into lots of problems starting wanting to start a,
family AND i had some issues THAT i had to get,

(32:34):
resolved and my wife had issues and nothing got. Resolved
and we did this thing called in vitro. Fertilization nothing,
happened and we did, that and then we talked for you,
know a year and a, half two, years what do we?
Do and you, KNOW i just needed to be somebody's.
Father so we. Adopted we adopted our son when he

(32:57):
was a day. Old and and of course fast forward
a little. Bit my son and daughter in. LAW i
dropped off the two grandkids here On friday and they
went away for a weekend and we had to do
grandkids four and three years. Old and that's and it's

(33:18):
interesting BECAUSE i work with this amazing, Woman Kay wagner
From Bold Authors, network no relation to. You And kay
had read this and she, Said, calvin she loved, it
and she's, cavin you, know there's four books within, Here
so what do you? Mean she, says there's four. Books
your journey to become a parent is a very, inspiring, emotional,

(33:43):
heavy funny type. Journey when we bout a, book her and,
me and then she, said you also spent twenty five
years working for the Richest italian in the, world a
multi multi. Billionaire you must have learned a lot of.
Stuff so it. DID i, mean my whole life has.

(34:03):
Changed so you're actually the first to know. This so see.
This uh where we've been Working Ka Ka wagum AND
i have been working on what we call a business.
Fable it's not it's a business fable and it'll be
published In. October, well ten THINGS i learned from the

(34:27):
billionaire a business fable BECAUSE i learned a lot of.
Stuff ah uh and it's enjoyable and it's it's. Heavy
AND i said one of the things before to, You,
mike you, know life is a, sale you, know because
everything you do in life is the. Sale so the

(34:50):
better as a salesperson you, are the better you.

Speaker 5 (34:51):
Are.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Uh so it's been a great. Journey WHEN i got
involved WITH nj discover this amazing uh production company here
In New. Jersey Uh AND i started doing some some
stuff for, him some promotion work for, him and and
then he, said you want to do some, Stories we'll
create a. Website and SO i, said, Yeah i'd love
to become like a. Journalist i'd love. That so right

(35:16):
out right outside the, GATE i started covering homelessness and
hunger and. Autism uh and and eventually got involved in
the music world here because two miles from my, house
this Guy Bruce springsteen.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
Lives oh, Yes Bruce, Springsteen Holy.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Cow so this Is Springsteen. Country SO i uh WHEN
i started my journalism Uh And springsteen was quote born
he was born In, Freehoul New, jersey but he was
quote born In Asbury. Park uh huh and and uh
uh and and that that's where he started doing with

(36:01):
a band Called Steel mill and and ACTUALLY i read
about that and here it was a great little place
in the late sixties early, seventies and that's Where boos.
Started SO i kind of got my feet wet and
loved getting involved with the Sbe park music scene and
hanging out with Like Vinnie, lopez the Original Drummer Street,

(36:23):
band and met an endless array of. People and THEN
i got involved With Danny, coleman who's a music, journalist
and BEFORE i know, it a couple of blinks of
the eye And i'm co hosting his rock on radio,
show which, is you, know beyond my comprehension BECAUSE i
didn't know much about. Music you, KNOW i knew About

(36:46):
Peter paul And mary And Bob, dylan stuff like. That
but so it's been a great. Journey and then the
teaching gig At rutgers only BECAUSE i wanted to give
back and Because i've been learning so much. Stuff so
you get back to some students and before you, know
the whole bunch of students contact you and they want

(37:06):
you to kind of help them and they see all
that going. On so, records how about just teaching, Them
SO i started teaching rough job teaching.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Them oh, yeah, WELL i gotta say that is probably
one of more most fulfilling ones out there as well.
Too and plus you also you ended up being the
host of, conversations which is the species as.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
Well, yes so THAT i loved doing my. JOURNALISM i
loved doing these stories that that had. Meaning and when
the pandemic, hit we had to, stop you, know OUR tv,
show AND i didn't know what to do with. MYSELF
i had all this energy h and AND i was actually,

(37:54):
talking not, talking BUT i was messaging a track store
At Rutgers. University she was a, Sophomore Claudine. Smith she
was a triple jump record, holder and we were just
messaging back and. Forth and after we had done, MESSAGING i,
said see what a, grounded interesting young woman and and
just set such a handle on. Things so the following,

(38:16):
WEEK i, said can we like talk on the. Phone
so we talked on the. Phone we talked About, rutgers
we talked about track and one thing led to. Another
then the light bulb went off in my. Head, my
there there must be armies of people like her who
are so grounded and have such a handle on life and.
Things why DON'T i just you, know interview. Him SO

(38:36):
i asked my daughter in. Law she taught meybe this
thing called.

Speaker 5 (38:39):
Zoom where's one right? Now uh?

Speaker 2 (38:42):
Huh that was. IT i started, zooming and you, know
it was a slow, growth and now almost five years,
Later i'm approaching four hundred people all over the world
That i've.

Speaker 5 (38:54):
Been, wow amazing and love it and love.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
It and you, know it's a give back because you're
you're giving people a platform and it's hard today to
have a, platform just like you're.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
Doing like right, exactly and of course there's reasonable behind
you got a purpose on them. Platforms we are everybody
to check out conversations With. Calvin we The species With Calvin.
Schwartz and now that you have a, podcast you run
a media. Company you've been writing articles and. Everything you
also appear in a couple of films Like One Truth
thing And world Of worlds and tell us more about.

Speaker 2 (39:30):
That right, well the one The One Truth. Thing and
this is a great lesson for your. Listeners if you
stay at, home nothing's going to. Happen so one, day
it was ninety, Seven november ninety, seven my sister called
to Say, hey they're they're filming a, movie a big,
Movie Meryl, Streep William, Hurt Rene, zellwerger a big motion

(39:54):
picture in our hometown Called, Maplewood New, jersey and and she,
says want to go watch? THEM i, said, wow that
would be. Great uh, so, UH i got. DRESSED i
didn't know it was gonna be in a, movie because
who would ever dream you were gonna be in a.
Movie SO i put on a sweat because it was

(40:17):
cold and it was an outside it was an outside,
shoot AND i had a sweater that had big mustard
stains From Madison Square. Garden AND i ran out of the.
House my wife THOUGHT i was completely out of my.
Mind you said some things THAT i keeps throwing back to.
Her she just THOUGHT i was out of my. Mind,

(40:38):
anyway we went up to watch, it and it was
a Real it was a Great it was near the
end of the. Movie. Uh and they were filming a
Scene Metal street is dying in the, movie and they
they're gonna light The christmas tree lights and they had
a machine making, snow but you couldn't get to within
three blocks of where they were shooting because everything was blocked.

(40:58):
Off and they did tmid amount Of they put all
these freak storefronts on this little you, know this three
block little town. Center uh and and we we just
did it for like an, hour an hour and a,
half and it was just amazing all the work that
went into this one. Scene and then the police got
word that they they're they're doing a. Break they're breaking

(41:18):
so they'll let, people uh you, know walk on set
and get a container of milk from the milk. Store
and if you want to get a slice of, pizza
get a slice of. Pizza said said to my, Sister
let's get a slice of. Pizza we'll be right smack
in the middle of everything till they chase us. Away uh.
Huh we we went to the pizza place and we
said In New jersey state record for chewing one slice

(41:42):
of pizza for two. Hours oh my. Goodness we just
a little, here a little, here a little. Here and
then after two, hours all of a, sudden everything, is you,
know all the activity is going, on the machine is
making so SO i said to my, sister let's just
walk out and just watch the chases. Away so we
walked out and we were right next to an old

(42:04):
an old art daco movie, theater and and that's where
all the the actors and actresses were staying, warm and
we're just looking at, everything and all of a, sudden
right next to me Is Merle. Streep so you, Know
i'm not. Shy AND i started talking to her and
said how MUCH i admire her, movies and she talked

(42:26):
to me a little. BIT i didn't know what to,
say you, KNOW i was kind of. Nervous Uh and
WHILE i was talking to, her one of the production
assistants saw that and came over to. You did you
know he THOUGHT i was part of that whole, entourage you,
Know Meryl streep for A Zelwegger William Hurt and he told,
me come, on we got to place you. Now SO

(42:48):
i give sister shot in the. Ribs he takes us
right on the set and then he, says you know
everything you have to say and, do AND i, said,
well you, know it's been a long, day just kind
of go over. It and he tells me and he walks,
away AND i look at my. SISTER i, said we're
going to be in a. Movie and then and THEN

(43:08):
i said to, MYSELF i got a little. PIGGY i,
said you, know we're in the back here there's like
one hundred and fifty. People they're all extras in the town.
SQUARE i, SAID i don't want to be in. Pack
SO i, Said i'm working my way up. Front so
you actually see me in the movie pushing my way up.
Front SO i got really close To Meryl, streep And

(43:31):
i'm in the Movie One True. Thing Meryl streep is
nominated for An Academy. Award and the funniest thing about that,
is years and years and years, later my wife started
dating his wife AND i ad met his wife three
or four, times de la. La and it was A,
saturday you, know some years, ago and she picked up the.

(43:53):
Phone she call my. Son she, said she, Said, Neil
i'm watching this Movie One true thingest. Thing there's a
guy in the movie who looks just like your. Father.
Huh and my son, said that is my. Father and
right after, that right after, that stuff went to my,

(44:13):
Head i'm in a. Movie SO i did audition For
Steven Spielberg's war of The worlds With Tom. CRUISE i
did audition and they actually called me. TWICE i like, That,
WOW i called me twice AND i actually. Did this
was the biggest MISTAKE i ever made in my. Life

(44:36):
i'm telling right here in the Mic wagon. SHOW i
it went to my. Head and when the casting agent
called me the second, TIME i turned him down because you,
KNOW i had to take off eight. Days it was
a long. SHOOT i, Said i'll do, it BUT i
want to guarantee of screen time at which. Time at

(44:57):
which time the agent, said she laughed at. Me we
don't even give that To Tom, Cruise so what are you?
SO i turned it. Down big. Mistake but a little
time after, THAT i went To Central casting In New
york AND i became an official. Extra how you like? That?

(45:17):
Yeah and and literally within two weeks of my signing
up With Central, CASTING i got a call and they
were filming a NEW tv show Called New Amsterdam Doctor.
Show AND i got called AND i became an extra
for the opening. Montage they filmed two scenes in the opening.

(45:40):
Montage it was six hours to film that. Scene my
my job was sitting on a sofa next to a
little kid who presumably was my, son and and we
did that for six, hours and then six hours later
we filmed the next scene in the lobby of THE
i guess The Bellevue. Hospital and at this. POINT i

(46:04):
was tired and hungry AND i did not want to.
Stand so when nobody was, LOOKING i found a little
thing AND i sat down for six, hours and then
they brought us upstairs to feed us after twelve. Hours
and by the TIME i got up to the, FOOD
i was at the end of the. Line there was
no more food. Left oh, No SO i retired from

(46:26):
being an extra end of my extra.

Speaker 3 (46:29):
Career, well you had some extra things to talk, about
not just being, extra as you being on film and
authors and everything like. That you also are on the
advisory board as well, too On Women's.

Speaker 5 (46:42):
Houth tell us more about.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
That, yes, so and this is another great thing for.
Listeners WHEN i, decided WHEN i Left luxotica AND i
decided to become a, JOURNALIST i said to, MYSELF i
got to find some kind of. Branding and AM i
going to do? Well you, Know i'm six or, five
So i'm. TALL i stand. Out and it came to

(47:06):
me one day to put on to put on A
rutgers hat WHEREVER i, go WHATEVER i, Do i'm A rutgers, brand, football, basketball.
Whatever So i've had to hat. On i've had to
hat on my. Head it never comes off to be.
Dramatic one, NIGHT i actually worked to bed and my

(47:27):
wife didn't want to let me get into bed because she,
Said i'm drawing the Line, calvin no hats in.

Speaker 5 (47:34):
Bed SO i, don't, boy you know What i'm saying
unless it's a. Cat so.

Speaker 2 (47:41):
Yeah so but, ANYWAY i was at The Garden State
Film festival six years. Ago it's a great independent film.
FESTIVAL i got really friendly with the, Founder diane and
the current. Director AND i was there doing, stories interviewing
some filmmakers and a woman came over to me and

(48:04):
and and asked, me excuse, me are you A rector's,
Professor and of course at that TIME i, wasn't AND
i always dreamed of becoming A rector's. Professor AND i said,
NO i WISH i. Was and she, said, well here's
my business. Card she gave me a business. CARD i
gave her. MIND i never. LOOKED i just you, know
threw it in my. Pocket and a week later that

(48:25):
that woman called me and her name is Doctor Gloria,
bachmann m D O B g Y, n director of
The Women's Health institute At Rectors robber With Johnson Medical.
School oh, wow, okay she Saw i'm a journalist and a,
writer and she, said would you like to come to
uh a lecture at the. Hospital SO i, said, yeah,

(48:47):
sure my. Pleasure SO i, went actually took my wife,
first the last time she ever went on the road
with me like. That it wasn't the topic wasn't SOMETHING
i was particularly interested, in and it was a little
graphic sewing some. Surgery i'm not a blood and guts
kind of. Guy and NEVERTHELESS i did AND i wrote

(49:08):
up a little piece for, that and two weeks later
Doctor bachman called me WHEN i like to come to another?
Lecture AND i, said, yeah. Sure you, know, Hey i'm
a retired. Guy, YEAH i got all the time in the.
World AND i, Did and THEN i went to a
dinner and honoring her because she's written like hundreds of,
papers she's known the world. Over and then BEFORE i know,

(49:30):
it you, know a month, later would you like to
be an advisory committee of The Women's Health? Institute And
that's What i've been. Doing and it's been a wonderful
journey BECAUSE i learned things THAT i would have never imagined.
Learning why BECAUSE i had a hat on.

Speaker 3 (49:47):
You got that, right and also not only you on
A Women's board Of Health Avica rutgers and you also
taught career exploration as well, too and in, fact you,
know people need a, career especially people need a.

Speaker 5 (49:58):
Job so is our best place so?

Speaker 2 (50:01):
Correct and you, know we're living in such a changing.
World it is so, dramatic you, know WITH, ai it's
so dramatic how things are. Changing so it was a
thrill for me to teach career. Expirations it. Was and
this is you, know it's six years. Ago it wasn't

(50:23):
a long time. Ago and back then it wasn't even
AN ai even on the horizon more or less like
it is. Now but, uh you, know to, PREPARE i
to prepare for each, LECTURE i used to have to
read like twenty articles and watch about six different. Videos
that me was. Intense oh, wow it was really really

(50:45):
intense and then degrading and the. Lecture you, know we're
doing two of these things a. Week it was. Hard
it was really really. Hard and you, know my wife
was a, teacher you, know thirty five years In New, York,
jersey AND i could never appreciate just how hard it.
Is it's totally. Consumptive you, know you go home at four,

(51:05):
o'clock you're not, done AND i was never, done and
it was just so much that they wanted me to continue.
TEACHING i retired when semester, done BUT i loved, it
and you know, What i'd do it. AGAIN i Guess
i'd do it again because it's a lot of fun

(51:26):
and certainly do as well.

Speaker 3 (51:28):
Too and, lastly what do you want people to get
from the? Book there's this tortoise in my, hair.

Speaker 2 (51:34):
It's. Funny we talked about this today and this author's
group That i'm in With Kay. Wagner WHAT i would
love people get out of? This and if you read,
it and by the, way everything spiritual in this book
really happened For batim to. Me there's a lot of other.
Stuff it's, fiction but whatever you read about spiritually happened to.

(51:55):
Me AND i would just love people by the, way
there's such a powerful spiritual thing in this that three weeks,
ago three weeks ago TODAY i wrote The Pope Nice,
YEAH i actually wrote the New Pope welly BECAUSE i
have a character in here who LOVES i Love Villanova.

(52:21):
UNIVERSITY i don't know WHY i Love Villanova's Villanova, university
BUT i Love. Villanova my character and me always talked
about going To. Villanova, well The pope went To, villanova
and then in nineteen sixty two in here and then
in real, Life i'm feeling ecumenical and really needing to
see Midnight mass and be at. It so a friend

(52:45):
AND i we went to Midnight mass At Saint leo's In,
Irvington New, jersey and The pope Is Pope. Leo.

Speaker 5 (52:52):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (52:52):
Interesting so there's a bunch of spiritual things in here
THAT i just felt if he ever if you ever read,
it he would be a little bit intrigued because there's
some really powerful stuff you can't make. Up so what
WOULD i want people to take away from? This that
there's something beyond you, know the, earth this, is this

(53:13):
isn't the end of. All there are things beyond our
grasp and our. UNDERSTANDING i call it. Spirit you, know
it's A spirit's a wonderful. Word it kind of it's
like an umbrella word for a lot of. Things BUT
i call it. Spirit, hey you, KNOW i THINK i
don't KNOW i have, mentioned but you KNOW i got
healed big. TIME i was walking with a king and

(53:37):
couldn't walk AND i needed to get in the knee
and ACTUALLY i was at The church of The Holy
sepulcher In jerusalem and went Inside christ this little room
Where christ's casket, is where he was buried and where he's.
Resurrected if i'm AND i put my hands there AND i. Meditated.

(53:58):
Yeah and a few days later and again walking with a,
cane couldn't walk. Pain and then four days LATER i
went to the church and The annunciation In Nazareth Mary's,
church AND i was by. MYSELF i was with my, wife,
sister and Sister laura and, cousin you, know they were
doing their. THING i walked with a cane and real,
slow AND i walked down to the basement there's a

(54:21):
shrine To. Mary it did some. MEDITATION i love to,
meditate and did some. Thinking AND i walked up real,
slow a lot of strange pain going up and down my.
Leg AND i took a right turn and went out
a side. Entrance took one, STEP i go out AND

Steve so what's the deal? Here you treat me for
two years everything under the sun is done to my.

(55:05):

THERE i don't need a new. Knee an went like,
that but that's in here. Too you. KNOW i wrote
about that, too BECAUSE i don't have. ANSWERS i just have,
experiences and they're nice and it's. Comforting so that's WHAT

(55:27):
i like. People you, Know i'm a, Hey i'm a regular.
Guy you. KNOW i wear A recerus. HAT i go
to football, games basketball. GAMES i do watch The Stanley cup,
finals you, know.

Speaker 3 (55:38):
And that was a heck of A Stanley. CUP i
mean put Away edmonton once and for.

Speaker 2 (55:42):
All were you a big fan Of edmonton WHEN i Had?

Speaker 3 (55:47):
GRETZKY i have to say, This Although i've been A blackhawks,
FAN i guess Says gretzky was, very very very entertained to.
Watch and there are tons Of blackhawks actually hand their handle.
THEM i maybe there are, scores, guys it's like what six, four, seven,
five nine, Seven it's, like throw the defense out the.
Window just let them. Play it's like you're getting a.

(56:08):
Shootout that's the. Thing it's like you don't ever Hurt.
Gretzky it's, like let them have a hat trick and
let our boys have a hat. Trick so it's like
every time you Play, edmonton expect a. Shot so put
your track shoes on and just have fun with the.

Speaker 5 (57:24):
Of, course hockey keep going and going and going and.

Speaker 3 (57:27):
Going if you need to change, up it's like dump the,
puck change lines, quickly or if you don't give the
players a, breathering you'll just y'all go ice the puck
or just like purfectly dump the puck in the crowd
and pretty Guy nova gets hurt or like, hey something
against the. Souvenirs so there's ways around.

Speaker 5 (57:43):
It so you get really, creative.
