Speaker 1 (00:05):
Line and line.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Welcome back to the must Kate dan Levy out of
Dering in z During New Zealand. I suppose they are
called joins us Kate, good afternoon. Now you're based in
North Otago. It sounds as though it's a different situation
to Southland. Really windy up there, hey.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
And the year it is, we've had quite a bit
of wind up here. We seem to have missed all
that rain and whether you guys have had the uncuff
but yeah, she's been pretty windy, the grounds drying out
and driving around eye seems to be cranking into the irrigation.
So yeah, yeah, it'll be interesting to see what the
summer brings.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
What's your what's your water twy like for the year
so far, Kate, would you be would you be behind
on rainfall?

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Oh no, I probably I'd say we wouldn't be because
we've had a wish a winter than usual, which is
not a bad thing for up here. So yeah, it'll
just be interesting to see what happens in summer.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yes, yeah, fascinating as well, leading into our topic today,
which we're talking about premating couple of reminders there obviously
having Tackler in front of you is one thing, but
a couple of other things as where to keep in mind.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Kate, Yeah, so for usly, I was just wanting to
talk about metro checking. So about twenty five percent of
cows can have endo metrisis before mating starts, which can
have a big impact on reproductive performance. So this is
easily easily diagnosed by using a metro check. So really

(01:38):
just a reminder to talk to your vet. We advise
to check all the cows and treat about a month's
before mating. And the other thing I wanted to talk
about was just ensure you've got a solid plan nailed
with your Seman company, so be really clear on exactly
what you've ordered when it's coming so there's no surprises
in October. Also, if you are using Hall paint, just

(02:00):
ensure that you've got that ordered and that's also ready
to go pre mating heat. So you should be starting
to look now and have a bit of an idea
of how much of your heart is cycling with your vets.
If you are using PG your seed is just make
sure that you've got that booked in with your vets
now and also quite handy to start getting your cows

(02:25):
used to being drafted. So it's also really good time
to check that the tech is working as it should
be staff, so ensure staff all over it. Does anyone
need any upskilling be really clear on who's picking cows
and if you are using technology, do they know how
that all works? And then just lastly, I wanted to

(02:46):
mention bulls, so if you are using balls, just ensure
that you have planned to get the correct number. So
having enough balls when cows come into heat is also
really important and ensuring good group of performance. So if
anyone wants guidance on that, go to the Dairy Ended
website search and balls and you'll find a really helpful

(03:06):
table on number of cows in the herd and then
percentage of pregnant cows start of mating, and it'll give
you a suggested number of balls you need and also
just a reminder to make sure that you take into
consideration resting your balls, so you may need to double
those numbers as well. So yeah, those are just a
few week tips. So yeah for a very good pre

(03:30):
mating checklist. So yeah, if anyone needs any more, and
our webs that's a really good place to jump on
and have a we look.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
I suppose a big thing at the moment is Kate
getting through carving slowly but surely, and mating just appears
out of the blue. So yeah, let you say, just
a checklist.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, and it all comes around pretty quick, doesn't it.
And yeah, it's definitely good to have these things all
planned and nailed by this time.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
So yeah, how's carving been up in your neck of
the woods.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, pretty good, pretty good. I think everyone's yeah coming
out of it. We haven't really heardny clams and no overall,
I'm going to say, yeah, yeah, really good.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah. We talk about ball management as well. I mean,
and when you got the balls out there too. I
mean it's a long way off now looking about lameness,
broken puzzle et cetera and everything else like that, but
doing your due diligence and like you're saying, getting your
ratio organized for the flock or the herd.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, absolutely. And again is that we've got heaps of
information on ball management on our website. So if it's
also a good thing for staff, if you want to
jump on and just take them through it, that's also
a really good resource.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
There's no such thing as a flock of cows, is it?
As a flock of sheep as a herd of cows
or a mob of cows. That that sounds about right, Yeah,
punching all the way through Wednesday, I tell you now,
Deary and Z Kate, you've got some information online like
you say.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Yeah, yeah, no, We've got lots of resources online. And
also if anyone's listening from North Otago, we've got a
couple of events coming up. So we've got a few
real professional events one and Cromwell next Wednesday, and then
one in Omaru on the thirtieth, and then we're also
going to have a partnered Frontier event on Emissions end

(05:14):
of October. So yeah, if you're round, it'd be great
to come out to there. It'll be good to see people.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Good only Kate always good to catch up.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, thanks Andy, you too, Kate, Dan Levy.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Out of Dairy and Z the artist is Sea see
it as three letters, as is mob like a marve
of cows. Right anyway, we continue on up next clear
Toya Bailey, you're listening to the muster

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
