Speaker 1 (00:07):
Question. Megan Wright of Waitani Young Farmers joins us for
this week's Young Farmers wrap up, as we do on
a regular basis here on the Mustagan.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Hell, are you not bad to south ending?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Can't really complain. The weather's playing ball for a change,
and I'd say there's a lot of people out there
burning fuel and the paddocks or else got the drench
gone out and up and running.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah. Look we're getting some early early lemons drinks through
for huts waning next month. And yeah, it's definitely a
few trainers gone around and round of circles, it's for sure.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Now Waitani Young Farmers, of course, who you're involved with.
How's things being lately?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Ah?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
You We were just taking along there as well. Really
had a had a meeting last night. Had a good turnout,
which was probably helped by the rains means a few
traitors were pulled up, so people actually made along. But
I think we had just yeah, twenty six, just thirty
people there roughly, so that was good to see.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Is that as big a turnout as what you've seen
for a meeting for Waitani? That seems a bloody good number.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, it's yeah, last few meetings have been sort of
about that twenty five mark, which is a bit pro
stoked about people getting along to meetings, but people were
also sort of getting along to events and stuff as well,
which is always good.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Are you getting young people coming along to the meetings
like first timers?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, we had a few new faces yesterday, mostly just
word their mouth through workplaces. Really few few follows from
across the old side of the world. Who are you know,
can who get along and have a luck and near
they're sitting in real well?

Speaker 1 (01:41):
So are they working for local contractors? Are they?

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Ah? Oh, there's a couple that come off steer farms,
and yeah, a couple couple that are swinging spinners and
and uh moving steering wheels. So yeah, so.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
You've got an across section there many urban nights and
waitani young farmers.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Not too many, Like we've got like a teacher, a
couple of teachers, and vets and and builders like there's yeah,
not everybody's in farming, but they have a passion for farming,
so brilliant. It really matters, really well.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Absolutely, if you're getting teachers coming along, you just want
to come and talk a bit of work farm talk.
I suppose get away from the books. It's a good thing.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah. Oh, they're pretty good at keeping us on our
toes and making sure we're doing don't ship by the books.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
I'd imagine the teachers are strict.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Uh yeah, strict. They're good, good value, good value.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
That's what we want. So what has been happening with
the club, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
We've been pretty pretty uh what's the weapon that just
just taking along. We've been getting along to a lot
of other clubs, events like the Alpha that ow barkup
and had a few few people in districts that was
what was it a couple of weeks ago now yep,
but no, they loved it. I got along to have

(03:03):
a lot. They come and put on a really good
day there and yeah, and then enjoyed it. So I
guess we're just now that that's through. We're really excited
to be hosting regionals in February taking along with that.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
That's one thing about the young farmers. I'll give you
guys credit. Whenever there's an event on around the district,
you'll turn up to it. You talk about the bark
up or the bark off, whatever you call it. But
there's a lot of people from throughout a target a
lot of clubs from their turn up too, So that's
that's got to be commended. You're all making an effort
to get out and about and support other clubs.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, it's been real good. Like I know Stras had
their bark up on the weekend justin and I know
a few of the bow for Young farmers they'd been
splotting wooden and then they shot up there and got
up there and supported them. And it's a target's picking up,
which is good to see.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Not for sure it is. Now we talk about the barkup,
so it sounds like you and your other half has
a you're pretty good at the human barkup.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I was hoping that wasn't going to come up.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Well, it's kind of got to come on. Taylor just
went through the nuts and bolts of it last week,
so yeah, it was I don't know, just just explain
to people how the human barkup works as supposed to
the dog's Well.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
That's exactly what a what it sounds like. I guess
one of them, one of the humans is going to
be the dog in one of the humans is going
to be the dog's owner. I suppose that.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
So how do you work how do you choose which
is which?

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Ah? Look, yeah, I don't know. There was a weamit
of an argument up on stage. I think there was
a funny and I was like, oh, that was pretty marginal,
but top dog always comes down on top.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, well it seems to be almost seems as popular
as the human bark is what the dog bark is.
That's the irony of the situation.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, look, it's always a good laugh, So yeah, go
with it.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Really for sure. You can't now as far as activity
is for way Tani yourselves. Have you guys been busy lately,
like the chainsaws out trying to help people get their
fences up and running or what have you been up to.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
I haven't haven't been out and done that yet, but no,
we had a tailing fund raise the last month at
one of their members farms, and yeah, we've had a
few lambs here and everybody's Yeah, a lot of their
club's sort of contractors, so they do. We do struggle
to get well. With the wind's good, we are struggle
to get doing things like that. But yeah, we've got

(05:26):
a few trees lined up to cut up for firewood
and stuff later on, so we'll get around to that
when we get round to it.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
And as far as club activities and the lead up
to Christmas.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
What's the go Oh, you've got to have a Christmas do,
so we'll be we'll be having one of those, be
the low key potluck and then I think that's happening,
or the day before they have the cargo races, I think,
which is maybe the eighth.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
I don't think you guys know the meaning of the
word low.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Key, low key, no, no, go big or go home.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
That's what we want here. Hey, So, Meghan, if anybody's
listening to this and thinking young farmers, wy tatty young farmers.
Perhaps if you're based around the gore, like you say,
your meeting's been and gone. But your social channels are
always active.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Oh, social channels are always active. Most things get put
up there between Instagram and Facebook. But if you really
really came to reach out, just pluck us a message
and someone will get back to you.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Hey, good on you, Meghan. What I can hear the
using lambs baying in the background. So a bit to
let you back to it, appreciate your time.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Not so easy, thinks Eddie, laugh out loud with ag
proud because life on the land can be a laughing matter.
Brought to us by sheer Well Data working to help
the livestock farmer.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
A lot of people wonder why daylight saving exists and
somebody in Europe on a bit of extra time to
do some work around a war or something. No, this
useless fact around daylight saving is actually intriguing. It's all
to do with an entomologist from New Zealand who wanted
the extra day, like to catch bugs. That's the rationale
for daylight saving and I've verified that before. Google doesn't

(07:08):
lie right, so we'll leave it there for the afternoon.
I mean, de mur This has been the muster on
Hakanui thanks to Peter Jenelix. Enjoy the afternoon, see you tomorrow.
