Speaker 1 (00:00):
With us on the show. Right now, we've got the
Southern District mayor Rob Scott, Can I Rob? How do
you get nine?

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Chris?

Speaker 1 (00:06):
God?

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Thank you?

Speaker 1 (00:07):
You imagine you've had a bit of a whirlwind a
couple of weeks and the whirlwind beginning to your seeking
term is meyor how's that all going?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Yeah? Well, wind's probably the key workers. Wind is sitt
me a wind for forty minutes? Can? Yeah, certainly wreck
a bit of evict but no, it's going well. It's
obviously been a tough time for a lot of our
people and there's going to be quite a long tale
to this. Has been talking to a few farmers over
the last few days and so if ye're hearing about

(00:36):
the destruction and how long it's going to take to
recover it all. But I mean, the best thing that
we've had out of this is no loss of life
and no serious injuries, absolutely one one blessing out of
it all.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yes, and we're just with these cleanups carrying on. Just
as long as people have got that safeties payer amount hopefully, Yes,
everyone will be fine.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah. I see a lot of the stores of side
out of chainsaws, and we are starting to get a
few more people presenting to A and E with chainsaw,
and so yeah, people don't need to just take care
I guess around that. Yeah, I mean chainsaws don't. They
quite often win arguments, so yeah we need to they
yeah alert.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
And yeah, making sure you've got the safety equipment and
I guess having someone there to you to keep an
eye on things providing they're safe also yeah. Correct, But
it looks to me to be mainly a big good
job for a lot of it too.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah. Yeah, a lot of people I've been talking to,
they've actually made the assessment and they've gone, hey, look
this is actually too big for me. I'm going to
get the big machinery in and do it that way
because there's a lot of tension and a lot of
those trees and stuff as well. So yeah, sort of
just being realistic I think, and letting the big machinery
come in and do it.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, And there were senses tied up and at all
that they're probably going to need ripped out and rebuilt,
and not to mention Eric Gavis and all sorts of
things that need to be repaired. So certainly just adding
to the busy time on farm, body isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yeah, yeah, it is.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Is there anything particularly you've seen, you know, for people
to watch out for other than that, Is there still
a few power wise down?

Speaker 2 (02:12):
The power is power need to certainly getting on top
of that. Now we're sort of down to the last gidding.
I think we just had under a thousand now, which
is which is good. So there may still be power
lines down and yeah, again, just if there are, just
make sure. And they're at the point now where they
wanted people to let them know when they're finding things

(02:33):
as well. So yeah, whatever you do, don't go anywhere
near them because they are livening up the networks. And yeah,
you need to treat any of those power power wise
as life because yes they are. We don't need any
any injuries or death coming out of this and the
tail end of it, yeah too right.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
They also stay with emergency. It's been in play basically
from the day after, I believe, and we're currently still
in that stage and that's I guess talking to you
off ye, And it's being reviewed every day, but it's
in place till more likely Friday. Is that great?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, at the moment, it's in place until Friday. We've
been briefing every day and including over the weekend, and
we're starting to look at what recovery is going to
look like now, so that's the next stage of the emergency.
So we're getting prepared for that in the same stage,
and it might even be before Friday we might move
into that recovery piece. And yeah, I think that recovery
is going to mean different things for different people. I

(03:27):
think from our rural sector, it's going to take quite
some time to get that recovery done on farms that
have been kind of obliterated with senses gone, and realigning
paddocks and getting everything all all back into the phrase
that we all love now, the new normal.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
New norm. Well, that'll be a nice thing when it
actually happens. Yeah, excuse me, just also thinking about the
recovery and what's happened during the emergency with all the
services that were involved. I just not that I was
affected at all by any but the way I've seen communities,
rarely electricians helping out farmers, the power people doing what

(04:06):
they did, the ambulances, the forum, and the I think
everybody was an absolute credit to everybody in these districts.
How people have banded together and supported each.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Other I MA, it's been incredible, and we've been going
I've been going on to a lot of these community
for the barbecues and get togethers that have been hosted
through the week, and you're just hearing stories all the time.
And look at Mosden on Friday night, they invited one
of the local Sparkys there and all the crew, and
they gave them recognition because they were literally working around

(04:37):
the clock. I think I thought his vehicle that keeps
track of how long you've been running for it had
been running for eleven hours. It's how long it's been
running NonStop. So between all of the I mean, obviously
Power Needs have done a sterling job, but there's been
a lot behind the scenes as well. South Roads, Forkinghogan Down,
the Sparkys, the farmers themselves, families, the whole everyone's just

(05:00):
all rallied together to make sure that no one gets
left alone in this and it's just at that Southern
spirit coming and through and through and it's just been
fantastic to hear. And people are so yeah, people are
just so Everyone that I talk to, I say, oh, well,
there's someone lose of than me. I'm not too stressed,
And no one's moaning, no one's worried. They're all just

(05:21):
doing much right to get through this. Also, it's so
great to their souvender right now.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
And not to mention the communication from you guys at
the district council. All of the councils involved have been
really good with their releases on information and just those
and dants and what to be aware of. So I
think the whole thing's been lead very well, right from
the top right down to the people on the ground.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, the colms has been a bit of a challenge
obviously they have comms for a while there and getting
out to people that I mean, there's still people without
power there and we're lucky with South Owns now that
you can kind of when the towers are up. We've
got colms in there. But that's that's one thing that
I think we need to look at going forward, just
to hew it can improve getting out to as many
people as fast as possible when when those networks are down.

(06:05):
So but yeah, on the whole it's been them. Yeah,
it's been a good a good challenge.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Too right, too right, And what a what a start
you seeking term anyway, So hey, look that's been all
I've got for this today, but thank you very much
for the work you've done and making the time to
be available for us today. Thank you very much. That's
Rob Scott from the Southern District Council
