Speaker 1 (00:07):
This welcome back to the master Foraronica. Ousferd of diarien
Z joins us next. Veronica, good afternoon on what is
a rather wendy wit I once.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Again, Yeah, hi Andy, how are you?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
They're pretty good, But we just look, we look at
the big situation, the bigger picture, if you will, regarding
feed situations. At the moment feed deficits are occurring. I
suppose it's a good chance from your guys' perspective of
diarien Z, just to reiterate some options that are available
for farmers at the moment because they might need it.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah, It's it's pretty chop and changey out there right
now with the decisions out on farm.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Like I know, last week it was looking.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Like we were kind of coming right, grass was growing,
soil tempts might have been probably trying to go up.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I know there was people mowing, we were.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Taking out silent, so that was really really positive. And
now this week's you know, it's kind of been the
other way around, where people are putting solage back in,
we're stopping mowing.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, it looks like growth rates.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Have kind of gone back down again, so soil attempts
have kind of maintained around that nine degrees. So what
are we going to do to help us out on
farm when our feed budgets.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
You know, we're not sorry when we're not putting in we're.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Not getting cultivation done, we're not putting grass in our
feed budgets.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
What are those going to look like through the summer
with not having that grass coming through?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
So, yeah, it would just be good right now to
kind of sit down, just kind of collect where you're
at in your feed budget and what you kind of
have planned for the next three months to get you
through mating.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
We all remember bank to July and especially until the
middle of August, carving was an absolute dream. But we
fast forward, we're looking at production levels. We're around the
type of pink milk as well, which is intriguing to
say the least, given that the situation is the way
it is. So it's a matter of trying to team
a production with grass growth.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
And you know, like I've heard, I've heard people that
have hit balance date already, others that still haven't hit
it and they were meant.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
To hit it three weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
So I mean that's very situational to your stocking rate obviously,
and where you are geographically with what the growth rates are,
and also just how much feed you're putting in. Probably
something that I do want to bring up is like
around that feed budgeting and looking forward to the future
and what we're kind of predicting for this season.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
So in September we updated.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Our e Contractor tool to show that this season will
probably have a break even milk price of forecasted to
have a break even milk price in Southland for owner
operators at eight dollars seventy four.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
So probably just keep that.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
In mind when we're doing our feed budgeting, and we've
got some tools there to look at that for the
cost of feed, like our feed Checker calculator, where you
can kind of look through your requirements of the feed
that you're putting in and the cost breakdown of those
going in. And then probably something else just to look
at and be mindful of is like when you are
doing that peak milking and trying to feed those cows

(03:05):
and coming into mating, who's like the bottom ten percent that.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
You're maybe not going to mate off of, and maybe just.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Doing some scenarios in what it looks like to call
those early versus keeping.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Them in milking them through the season.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
So yeah, just just being mindful of, you know, stocking rate.
We're not putting stuff in the ground on time. If
we're not, what are we doing to kind of balance
the sheet a little bit.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I mentioned this is Nathan last week talking about supplement levels,
but we see the situation the way there hasn't really
got any warmer at least keep things in perspective, right,
it'll be sooner than later that we are going to
get a growth explosion. But at the moment, if you
need to get supplement levels, you need to buy some
feet in. You just got to do it.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, one hundred percent. And like I said,
you can use that supplement price calculator.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
I think Nathan might have talked about that last week,
just to look at what.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Your margin on your feet is going to be.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
But remembering that's.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Just a point in time perspective, that's not a season perspective.
To get more of a season perspective approach in costs
that would be more that feed checker calculator.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
And then also to get that.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Kind of three months or seasonal look at feed quantities
like meeting demand on cows that would be more of
like our simple feed budget to go in there and
put in how much feed you're putting in, how much
pasture you have to see that you're meeting the requirements
of the cows, because yeah, obviously we want fully fed
cows all year, especially in peak milk.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
So you're encouraging people to get in touch with the
tall you with Deary and Zaid if they've got any concerns.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Veronica, Oh, absolutely, yep. Get in touch with us. Get
in touch with all your experts.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
To be honest, I had a great conversation this morning
with someone who like just lifting off to me all their.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Experts that they use in their business.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, like, reach out to every single one of them
on each one, Like it's about having that big toolbox
of people, and each person can can play a huge
part in bringing expert advice to your business.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
And the sun will come out tomorrow, that's the big
thing to realize around this.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah, yeah, it'll come.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
It'll come around the corner of south Land.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
We'll get you down, but she won't keep you down.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
So yeah, and everyone else is in the same boat.
So reach out to your neighbors, reach out to other people,
find out what they're doing. We've got a lot of
discussion groups going on right now, so that's a good
place to kind of touch base with people.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
So check out our events page to see where those are.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
And yeah, just just get in contact with each other
and find out what we're doing to kind of get
over this.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
