Speaker 1 (00:01):
We're going on and then thanks for joining us. You're
listening to the Master on Hockin. I'm Andy Mueller. Our
next guest is Warren Ross farming at Way movie. Also
were fishing correspondent and one of our rallying really support
correspondents as well. Well, good afternoon, how things.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah after Andy yet no got good? Thanks.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Now we catch in the shed taking some velveting. Doing
the velveting today. How's it going?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
You're not too bad. We've actually it's quite nice for
a change to audishing velving when it's not blowing. So
we haven't had many of those days lately, so now
it's coming off quite good, is she?

Speaker 1 (00:39):
What are the ideal conditions for doing velveting? I'd say
a call.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
The day, it's definitely call the day. Then we try
to and to do it in the mornings. So yeah,
so the year we've more said all in the morning
and then if one gets up after lunch she tend
to pull the pin, so you know, within the mornings anyhow,
So it's the.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Same philosophy as when you're mustering. The earlier you get
out there, the easier it is to beat the heat.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, and then it looks freeze after
after and up to you jump on a tractor, well
when you when you need to, So you know, it's
do you just duing your work on mornings? Really evalent?

Speaker 1 (01:15):
So how did you fear in the wind a couple
of weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, there's there's a bit of canna drowned. We didn't
lose too many trees compared to some of the other
farmers around the place, like it didn't lose any edge
lines or such, or it was just the odd branch
here and there. And but we did have one tree
fall through the supersed so that's a that's a wreck,
and so we need to rebuild that house. And there's

(01:39):
also a go goro racking. Yeah, so I eventually we
got too closely to see how how that's fearing in
there actually, so yeah, we'll see how it goes.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
As far as fence lines and the likes you got
o f ok Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
No, no, all that fennis lines are fine. Yeah, no,
there's and we still where you've got to phase down
at the moment actually, so around sort of running on
half air. But you know, even evening's sort of come
through pretty good.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Really, So when did you when did you get paid back.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Coincidentally, I think I was at a pair for about
six and a half days.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I think it was. So that was Thursday afternoon till
the following Wednesday night, I think, I think so. So, yeah,
but six and a half days or so, so that's
long enough. Any help.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Oh, oh, you'd have you'd have a couple of lights
hanging up out of noise. You can cook your crayfish
in space.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Actually, yeah, I had a cookerd seat up and a
few lights and some pieces. So yeah, grayfish going around
the right and and you know, it's yeah, it was.
It wasn't too bad, but it's probably more around the
sale network when it was playing up was the was
the hardest and hardest part, so trying to arrange to
range things or anything of that, and it's just you couldn't.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, reural connectivity, that's a missive issue.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yeah, that was that was my biggest A little bit
of a pair for it doesn't matter how long really,
but it was the cognitive Yeah, the sale network was
was hard work at times.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
So yeah, but that's right back to the velveting situation.
Price wise, there, what's it doing.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
I haven't heard any prices as such as that that
we're getting touch of selling some anyhow, So I'll guess
I'll find out then. From my accounts it it's not
not flash, not great. So that happy to have you
just said good in the market and the industry for
a year anyhow. So yeah, hopefully it comes right next year.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
So this is yet again through career in China, playing hardball.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
I think my belief so yeah, I think so, yeah, yeah,
just playing They do it occasionally, don't need to. There
are process of things. I mean, yeah, farmers will just
get on I.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Suppose that to flip the coin over the price of venison,
as we've talked about quite a few times before recently,
while is that venison is looking really promising, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
No, Venison's looking it is looking strong, and they're actually
in pain for col velveny steaks. From my account, I
think there's a lot of stakes that to get killed
this year, which will probably just lower the volume of
velvet that's scrolling in New Zealand. And I think it's
also just over supply for the velvet. So once once
they realized next year that is not the velvet and same,

(04:08):
I feel that that yeah, to prosper back up, it's.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Like anything, you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well, that's right, absolutely, absolutely, sir. So I hope I
hope it comes right next year.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
And yeah, good again, So you've been able to go
through and do your trick to work in the afternoons,
even though it's been a bit of a crapper of
a season.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
To coin a phrase, yeah, well, well the last we'll
sort of on onto it anyhow, to be fair, we're
not sitting to but it ain't got nothing planted in
the ground yet.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Hopefully sort of early next week we'll be looking at yeah,
getting a couple of peducts of far Beaten and then
in Kales and we're sort of on top of the
top of things a year. We're not super Bowl super Bowl,
which is quite quite surprising really.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
As far as the feed situation, how are you looking, No.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
We're we're we're really good for feed. We're just well,
last week we sit stocked all our hind so there's
sitting in the fawning pedis and the well, as I say,
we're velveting staggs. So we're halfway through all the mixt
age one. So that's once they get velvet that they
can either stack down the works or they or they
just get locked up on our sort of tighter rations

(05:15):
and feed the feet of something else that we were
sitting pretty good to be feared that Baylor's locked up
ready to do and not not ready to do in
probably month time, it's sort of in the November into December,
there'll be yeah, probably five superbells to do.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Probably well generally you say, the first of the bailage
coming off in the later stages of September, that you
just haven't had the chance to this season. I suppose.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
No, the September October was actually quite dura were really considering,
considering how allwus in July was, so yeah, and they
we're not we're not really trying to do bailers around
the middle of November as well, you see. But yeah,
just this year's certainly hasn't been out like that any help.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
So how's the fishing been recently? A senior boat packed
up there outside your parents place.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, no, so we've got a trip away there on
the weekends. So yeah, over over warm. My paths are
very doubtful on Friday and Saturday and come home Sunday.
So yeah, know, we are cleaning little crabs in there
to to take a winnie house. Came home with a good.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Feet or two seafood crabs.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, seafood crabs. Yes.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Anyway back on the straight and narrow. So would you
say the fisheries through there are looking pretty good?

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Oh? Absolutely, we were diving there was it was. It
was just crayfish everywhere, absolutely everywhere, and you come across
the spot and they're just parked on top of one another,
you know, there was there was another packing spot left,
you know, So that the fishery was really very, very
healthy in the raw. So, which is good to see.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
And your other passion that you're getting involved with is rallying.
Now I believe you're aware up to Auckland tonight to
go and follow the circuit once again.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, so you went to Auckland tonight and driving through
the funger A tomorrow morning with the four of us
going up and yeah, so mate mate had a major
acident there being in October up and tear on us.
So he's spent another car to use for for this really,
so with a bit of lucky he'll fingers crossed, he'll
do pretty good.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
There's not a cheap exercise to do rallying, is it?
I mean, getting insurance on those vehicles is pretty much
next to nothing, is that right?

Speaker 2 (07:16):
That's correct from what from what we're weird, they're they're
insured for touring stages between each each each stage and
four on the road if for on the trailer or
something like that, for as as part of the rally
on the stage as there is nothing. But you've got
got a lot of costs as well. You know, we
are flying four of us up to up to Auckland,

(07:39):
you know, is not achieved exercise. You know, there's there's
a been a bit of cost everywhere.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Really, So in other words, are insured for doing the
speed limit pretty much?

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's going over the speed limit. That's work.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
But good on you. We'll leave it there. All the
best up North rallying scene and we'll catch up again. Noise,
appreciate your time. Yeah that goody has got I need
think you no Wlaren Rossafoy movie before you wrap up.
