Speaker 1 (00:18):
Hi, and welcome to the NBA Podcast. My name is
Morton Jensen, and today we'll be discussing the Memphis Grizzlies,
the New Orleans Pelicans, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Orlando Magic.
And if you're sitting there thinking, hmm, what is the
common denominator by all those four teams, it is obviously
because we're about to talk about the panic meter that
is going on within the NBA right now. And when

(00:39):
I say we, I obviously have my good partner who
is sick as a dog while juggling a new dog
cock on the program. So I'm not even going to
ask you how you are, because you are not great, sir.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
We are surviving well, honestly, after Tuesday of this week,
we're doing better than.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
That, is me up.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Yeah that was a great mental health there.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yeah, so we are surviving.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
But yes, I it's November, so I have daycare plague
for the next five months. Apologies in advance. And yeah,
my dog is drifting off to sleep right now, which
means we got about thirty minutes before he wakes up
and starts barking.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
So let's get out.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Great, Yeah, let's get at it. Let's start with the
Memphis Christlies. Yes, listen, you and I have had this
conversation a whole bunch. I've been on this for at
least a couple of years now. I also just wrote
a column about this already. Yeahoo sports, I'm just done
and I have been done for a while with the
whole John range Jared Jackson junior combo. Now it seems

(01:38):
like he's grown, you know, personal not between those two.
My apologies between Jaw and su Musluk Salo, So we'll
see what happens there. But like just in terms of
the basketball skill set between the two of them, I
just don't like the fit. I haven't liked for a
while now. It's the I'm a raid ideology of being

(02:01):
a slashing point guard. But you're one practically never available,
two can't shoot. Three, you drift off defensively every single time.
Things just don't go your way. That's that's such a
bad starting point. And then you have arguably one of
the most athletic six seven, six eleven guys sixty seven.

(02:21):
Thank you kids for putting that in my head. Oh god, yeah,
that was actually because of that, my apologies. You have
arguably one of the most athletic six eleven big men
in the league. Who's like, rebound? What is this phenomenon?
Can you tell me about how it is that. I
don't know what a rebound is. It's just time Bright

(02:42):
like it's time.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean, one would think they kind of took
the first step in that direction by trading Desmond Vane,
you know, for a massive hall. I don't blame them
for doing it, given what they got back in return,
but yeah, it was not exactly a vote of confidence
in the current core. And I think Zach Cleman after
the playoffs last year said it was like kind of

(03:06):
a wake up call that we are not anywhere near
as close as we think we are, which is, you know,
it's I think we're having some cognitive dissonance because a
couple of years ago, before Job started getting suspended and
start getting injured, you know, the Grizzlies looked like one
of the up and coming teams in the West. It
was like them and the Thunder were supposed to rule

(03:27):
the West for the next half decade decade for the
rest of the twenty twenties, and then obviously that panned
out exactly as planned for the Thunder, but the Grizzlies
have not exactly panned out as expected, So yeah, I
mean it's an interesting kind of inflection point for them

(03:48):
where you know, Jah already got suspended for a game
this year for.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Clashing with their head coach.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I mean, typically in situations like that, the star player
wins out over the head coach, but they already fired
one head coach last year because he allegedly clashed with
Jah or his jaw was not a big believer in
the system. So at certain points, like how many coaches
are you willing to turn through to find one that

(04:22):
he's meshing with, and especially when these results are so
underwhelming and he's you know, like hopefully he has Instagram
Live no longer on his phone and his buddies don't
have Instagram Live on his phone. But no, there's that
backdrop too, like you got to make sure he's got
his head on straight when you're not at the arena,

(04:43):
and clearly over the last couple of years that was
not the case. So it's just like it's kind of
risky to build around him, you know. I think there
was an ESPN article today kind of touching on like
some of the big potential trade Candi and they were saying,
you know, if Jah, Trey, Trey Young, and LaMelo Ball

(05:06):
all hit the market hypothetically right now, I actually thought
LaMelo would have the most trade value of the three.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Yeah, I'd buy that.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
I do too, But I think that kind of speaks
to how far John Morant's stock has fallen.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Like I remember last.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Year, you know, when there was some like very premature
Tyree Maxey trade speculation. You know there was, and like
the Grizzlies were fine but kind of underachieving that. There
was a lot of talk like would you trade Ja
Morant for Tyree Maxey? And like, I don't think that's
a conversation anymore. It's just a straight no from a

(05:46):
sixer side. So I think the interesting thing if like
Memphis did decide to just fully detonate Jared Jackson Junior,
I think would there would be a lot of interest
in him. But like, what could you think of any
teams where jam Rant makes sense?

Speaker 1 (06:03):
No? I mean again, if we're going the whole Trey
Young John Moran swap, which is one I've floated a
couple of times. Sure, you know, it does make sense
for him to go to a team that is so
tall that is so long, and there is three point capability,
there is a lot of lessicism. You know, you have
two forwards who are like six', nine six,' ten who

(06:25):
can handle, the ball who can shoot the ball. And
rebound we can do a lot of these both big man,
wing things which kind Of allows jah in, my opinion
to focus on being more of, a slasher more of
a rim pressurer and. A playmaker but here's my like
even going into like the, basketball, stuff, like okay we
can sit here and, talk about, you know all what

(06:47):
makes sense from a, basketball perspective but you kind of
alluded to, something HERE which i think is the far.
Grander issue how can you take a guy who has
been so unavailable over the past, few years who keeps making,
a fuss who has kept putting himself into untenable situations
off the court for let's just, be real for, dumbass

(07:09):
reasons for no, reason whatsoever and then he still sits there.
In complaints he thinks like if you have not ever
played seventy games in, your career and like you're supposed
to be this star and you're supposed to BE a B,
and c but you're getting yourself suspended all the time
you're you're not even able to hit the floor because
you're also injured a fair amount. Of time like at,

(07:29):
some Point if i'm, sitting there either as an owner or,
An executive i'm asking, the question like where do you, get,
Off sir like where do, you like how can you
even try in your own mind to justify that type?
Of behavior like at some point you have to, understand, like,
oh MAN like i actually need to come from a
different perspective, With THIS like i need to be a

(07:50):
little bit. MORE humbled i need to understand that the
Consequences that i've suffered and so the suspensions were actually,
My fault like those can't be put on everyone else
for him to just sort of lean into, Screw it i'm,
gonna say lean into being. An asshole that's not gonna win.
Over friends that's not gonna WIN over nba teams that

(08:11):
might want to trade. For you so if you keep
acting like that in front of Like, the grizzlies their,
coaching staff, everything there how's that going to make him
look appealing to any? Other, team like if you want
to get out of, THAT situation i promise you acting
like a child at the age of. Twenty six it's
not going to do you any. Good, whatsoever right that's, A, problem, Yeah,

(08:36):
RIGHT yeah, i mean like.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Teams are not going to want to give up a
massive haul, for him And the grizzlies are not going
to want to give him up unless they're getting a.
Massive hall so if you really do, want out, you
know you can either go full scorched Earth Like jimmy
butler Did with miami, last year or you can be
on your best behavior and try to get teams back

(09:00):
bought into the appeal of, you know here's this guy
who a couple of years ago was one of the
up and coming stars of, the league still under contract
for two more years after, this one only on a
twenty five percent max, As well so it's, you know
not the, biggest contract not like a fifty to sixty million,
dollar contract like, YOU know I saw sacramento was at

(09:27):
least keeping an eye, on him which that's.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Not Great, IF sacramento.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
I mean i can see why, they would, but YEAH
like i have just the biggest concerns about whether that's
the right environment. For him I've seen houston thrown around
as a, possible DESTINATION but i think it's just really
hard to make the money work. For them Like Obviously van,
vliet's involved but like they're right up against the first

(09:57):
apron think it would be an easier thing to do in.
The Offseason if vleet picks up his, player option then
it would be. IN season I think minnesota was the
other TEAM that i saw mentioned, with.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Him because when you actually trade for a draft pick
in the top ten and draft a point guard and
then don't, blame him you're gonna need a? Point? Guard,
sure sure such such great asset management By. The, Wolves,
GREAT yes i guess.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
IT is i don't know where the money is coming
FROM unless i get are You moving gobert as the
big piece and then you're gonna Start N as reid
as your starting center?

Speaker 1 (10:37):
MOVING forward A Jam Rand rudy gobert trade would just
that that'd, be interesting asshole for asshole.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Great like edwards would be so annoying to. Play, against yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
They would that would actually look from an, entertainment perspective
that would be fun when they're. Both, healthy absolutely.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
AND like I Mean John, Anthony edwards, Jaden McDaniels Julius,
randall nasrid.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
That's fun. That's, fun yeah You.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Have dante divincenzo's your Six man dillingham if if.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
He becomes the side, of blame, yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
RIGHT yeah i mean They'd BE and i mean it's
Possible that dillingham would have to go in that trade.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
As well but he goes back to your, earlier point
or actually goes against your, earlier POINT which i. Agree
With the grizzlies aren't going to give up job for
like a, bad CONTRACT which i think, you Know Go bear, constitutes,
ASKED now i wouldn't take on. THAT deal, i, MEAN
yes i can be compensated for. Doing so so like
and and that's, the Issue Right like, Rich sorry Rich

(11:44):
sac climent is not exactly someone who is, you know he.
He doesn't he's not Inclined to god and take a
bad deal Like and rick saw That With desmond bain,
As well like he he got a Haul. FOR baine
i am going to assume he's going to apply that
Logic from Rant like i'm not giving this guy up UNLESS,

(12:04):
A b C and d, like yes down, the line
he may be forced to. Take something but a poo
poop platter consisting of, You Know rudy gobert is that
is such a far cry from even getting. Something returned,
that's like, you know additive to, your, Roster, right.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
YEAH yeah i MEAN it's i FEEL like i don't
Expect A john moran trade. ANYTIME soon, i mean you're
not getting one Before the, decevember fifteenth. ALMOST guaranteed i
guess we'll see.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
How the next.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Month unfolds but you know him already playing THE like
i lost my Joy and i'm not sure how to get.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
It back just was Like Screaming. Jimmy butler so, you.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Know like this is what's tough about being In the
west Versus, the east that you don't get nearly as
many cupcakes, out west and like things could go really
far south.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
FOR them i mean they've also, you.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Know there are a couple other teams that we're gonna,
talk about uh in. This episode there they've got like
two Against, the clippers they've Got, the pelicans they've got
two Against, the mavericks two Against, the kings so like
they actually could right the ship By that december fifteenth
kind of. Inflection point, but yeah it's, you know if

(13:25):
there's one thing we've learned ABOUT the nba in, recent
years that the next disgruntled star has always right around.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
The corner, And Yeah, john mortt welcome to. The, Corner.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
Oh i'm going to be. Provocative here, you said, you
know the next star sight around, The CORNER like, i
understand when fully healthy, And, everything yes he's. A star
can we trust that he's like in? That? Caliber still

(13:57):
can we the lack? Of IT like i, get it
like when he's attacking the. Rim, everything sure the lack
of shooting. Is real the inconsistent defense is becoming even
more of an issue than it's ever, been before which
is to me. Insanely worrying and then you have the
factor of him, just Oh if i'm not getting the

(14:17):
ball enough or if things aren't moving at, My pace
i'm just going to basically Do the tracey McGrady thing
and stand around mid court and just with a thumb up.
My ass if that's the way he's going to go,
About it i'm putting a lot of asterisk at the. Star, LABEL.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah, i mean like he's. CERTAINLY not.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
I would not have him on My Early all star
consideration right Like, HE'D yeah i mean to, your point
shooting a career low thirty eight point three, percent overall
fourteen percent From three.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
OH wow, i mean it's a small, sample Size so
i'll give. Him that but he's never been a good three.
Point shooter he's never been.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
That and career thirty one, point one so right fourteen is.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
An operation but has never is never shot above thirty
five percent, from three even thirty four point five percent
from three in a.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Given Year what i'm wondering is if we are to
take on like the positive, mindset here it's he's about
to enter. His prime he just turned, Twenty six, so
like if we want to spin this in a, positive
way if he goes to a situation where the fit
is just, more obvious where it just makes more sense,

(15:36):
roster WISE then i could see eight team or two
like talk themselves, into it, Basically, saying okay We're getting
jab at age, twenty six twenty seven and presumably age. Twenty,
eight yes because he's under contracted in twenty seven. Twenty
eight that's also a good Stopping point brian after, twenty
eight because then he's, Approaching, thirty like he'll have some

(15:59):
he'll still have some trade. Value left but we know
that this guy's game is highly reliant. Upon athleticism so
if whatever team Trades For jam morant and just squeezes
whatever they can out of his age twenty six seven twenty,
eight season and then afterwards, it's, like oh we, you
know either walking free agency or maybe even ships him

(16:19):
off during the last year of his deal just to
get something. In return that might not be a bad
play if it's not for the long haul you're. Acquiring, him,
yeah yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
THAT'S fair, i mean like maybe That's the king's RATIONALE
because i Would imagine levine would be the big salary
piece going Back.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
To memphis who's gonna take Threes? In, Sacramento Look, Jam Morans,
Russell Westbrook.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Malik munk is just gonna shoot twenty three's.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
A game i don't. Hate that we need someone to
do that at, some point just to shoot the twenty threes. Per,
GAME yeah i am going to be, your spacing not
part of, your spacing, your, Spacing right.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
It's the ONLY thing i will not attempt a single two.
POINT earlier i will not even go inside.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
The, arc no, but, like okay TWO am i being
too harsh About the grizzlies, and saying, you know this
experiment has just lasted Too LONG because I when i
watched them play the You, know Moran, J jackson, JUDAN
specifically i get thrown back Into The orlando magic Days
Of Vooch, Aaron Gordon, Evan fournier like sure it was a,

(17:28):
fine trio but they gave him. Six years nothing. Really,
materialized eventually they just DURING the i think it was
twenty one, trade unline they, Basically, said okay we can't do,
this anymore like we just. We can't we can't. Justify
it that's that's The feeling i'm Getting from memphis. Right
now BUT am i too harsh in saying that that duo?
CAN'T work, I.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Mean i think there's a world where they, Could work
like there was a world three years ago where it could.
Have WORKED but i guess my concern from their perspective
IS that i don't know if they have the assets
and the runway to build, Around them like what's the
path back to building a. Championship contender they got all

(18:10):
these Picks For, desmond vane but a lot of them are,
you know they got twenty thirty first round Pick, from
orlando a twenty twenty. Nine swap they traded one of
them already to move Up For, cedric coward.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
Who looks, good yeah he looks. Really.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Good Yeah, LIKE memphis, i mean they have some interesting,
young PIECES like i still Believe In Vince. Williams junior
we Haven't Seen gigi jackson, this year not much of him.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
This year we Haven't Seen Scottie pippensid Jerome, second Eth Your.
Brandon clark that's there was a four rotation players on
the bench because, yeah injured, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Yeah AND even I Mean jalen wells was He was
he's been bad, this year but was finished Third and
rookie Of the year race.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
Last year he was also very good.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Last year so they've got some young pieces that like
if You trade Moran And Jared, jackson junior even if
you don't get a suit like a huge Haul, FOR
moran i think you Would For Jared. Jackson jr, and
like there's enough to expedite a. Rebuild around but it's
hard unless some of these young guys like really hit

(19:19):
and take off OR they, i MEAN like i don't
know what The win now trade they, Could MAKE like
i don't know who there's one player in the league
who's like the missing piece for them other than like,
you Know.

Speaker 3 (19:35):
The Bucks having.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
Aneurysm And trade Giannis, for Nuts The, Bucks Hire nico
harrison and, Trade HONEST so i think that's probably the
concern on my.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
END same, i mean it's that's part of The reason
i'm a little bit, confused about like their constant Devotion
To Jaron. Jackson junior, you know you can play him as,
a four you can play him as a, five regardless,
That's fine but whoever you place alongside him has to
be the elite Rebound or sechi we saw is actually

(20:09):
that that, Is great that, is Great but sekied is
also so big he can be played off the floor
like there are. Just moments so what you really need
is someone who sort of Plays Like Jared jackson junior,
as well but who is a, better rebounder which in turn, would, say,
oh yeah you need a guy Next To Jared jackson
junior who's a better version. Of him that's insanely difficult

(20:32):
to FIND because i just don't see how you can
justify having him at the five when he doesn't breathe
bound and then at. The four you know you're not
gonna get a guy at the five who is, that
movable because those guys are like really expensive and really hard.
To find he's just such an odd fit, To me
like you actually years ago said the best player for

(20:57):
him Is A luka donci's type because obviously an, elite
rebounder so he'll help out on. The class so Like
If jared jackson has to go to, a team it
has to be this Focus on, oh yeah every other
four starter is like an above average rebounder for, their
POSITION which i think is such a. Great point and
that was something that's spoken To the moran fit, as
Well because moran when he wasn't injured or suspended or,

(21:20):
you know just sour elite rebounder at the point, Guard
position so there was, Something there but it seems that
ship has sailed with Him, In memphis, so like who's
now going to run the show at the at? The
one are they going to be helpful on? The, Glass,
like oh it's just SO many I think i feel
as Though the christs are tailoring themselves around the weaknesses

(21:44):
of two players instead of the strengths of these. Two
PLAYERS and i always think that's a really tough roster
construction perspective to.

Speaker 2 (21:52):
Go, through yeah it's a, fair point like there are
real concerns about like both of those being franchise cornerstone
types rather than like they can both be, all stars
but They're Like Jared jackson junior is definitely not the
best player on a Championship Team.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
JOHN moran i don't think, So either so how do
you get? That player like.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
If you found, That Player john moran is, Number Two
Jared jackson junior is, number three and then some of
the young guys as, a portacast like all of, a
sudden a lot clicks. Into place but again like easier
send it done getting said player without giving up, Either
Jaw Jared. Jackson jr all of the kids and all
of your draft picks.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
Like that and, then again who even is?

Speaker 2 (22:39):
That player Like It's, Luca's Giannest it's, wemby obviously so
versus the alternative of do you reset and, you know
get a massive haul for those.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
Two guys and just to wrap up the, final note
BECAUSE whenever i Talk About Jared. JACKSON jr i get
some type of message from a, you know, You know
grizzlies fans, at large either that in Comment on spotify,
or whatever like why are you always racking on? HIS
rebounding i have a really really good example just to
drive that home point the point home so centric coward

(23:13):
rookie win is playing fewer Minutes In Sharon. Jackson junior
he's grabbed forty nine rebounds, this year So Has Sharon.
Jackson junior six foot six rookie wing coward is averaging
the exact same amount of rebounds in fewer MINUTES. Than
jjj so can we just can we put? That narrative

(23:34):
just can we confirm? That narrative can we just lock?

Speaker 2 (23:36):
It IN because, i mean five point four rebounds per
game for someone who's own on seven, feet, tall right
that isn't. THE same, i mean you know we've SEEN
this arki. Type Before brook lopez won a championship as.
This Archetype miles turner was one game away from winning
a championship this. Past, year like it's not to say
that these players aren't winning players or you can't win

(23:59):
a championship with them as your. Starting center you, absolutely
CAN or I mean jjj could be a four. As
well it's just like it creates team, building challenges which
we will talk about when we Get To new orleans.

Speaker 1 (24:10):
As, well yes and also those guys you brought up
earned far less than what your rejection juniors, signed for
and that matters in roster construction. Generally speaking, so yes
we'll take a short commercial break and then we'll be
back With The New. Orleans Pelicans Brian. Sign williamson apparently

(24:30):
his trade value is at the lowest it's, ever been
and for, some reason it seems that the different outlets
that is reporting this are sort of foregoing part of
the reason why it might be. Really low so perhaps
we should just also mention. It here he's also accused
of something that has to play, a, Factor, right.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
Right there are some very graphic sexual assault allegations, AGAINST him,
i believe earlier, this year and we cannot speak to
the validity. Of them it's just he has been accused.
Of them that should be mentioned in an Analysis About.
ZION williamson, I mean i think that even, beyond that

(25:16):
there are enough on court reasons to be concerned. About
HIM but i would certainly hope at least that as
any team weighed making a run, at him that would
also factor into, the, Conversation right.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
And that was just to get that out of, the
WAY because i feel it's weird that that has gone
so much under, the radar because it's part of. The
context like if you're going to say a guy has,
you know horrible, trade value fine flesh. It out there
could be more recents than just the on. Court stuff
now we're going to focus on the on court. Stuff
today but that was just to make a note that

(25:53):
there are things in play that could affect his. Trade,
value yes so we've spoken about this before again and
now we're going to bring it. Up again the difficulty
in Building around scion, is enormous, just enormous because how

(26:13):
do you build around an undersized power forward who doesn't
have three, point range, who defensively to, his credit has,
gotten better but is still not in any Way a
jokranaut on that side of. The floor he, play makes
but he's not an. Elite playmaker, he's rebounding but he's
not an. Elite rebounder the only thing he really does

(26:34):
at a truly elite level is put pressure on the
rim and.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Draw, files right and even when he, draws fouls he
is not a great three free throw.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
Shooter exactly so like it's he it's it's so interesting
to me to see like his archetype and and kind
of realize that despite the fact that he's so skilled
and so dominant when going to, the basket it's almost
impossible to structure something around him that just you know.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Makes, sense, yeah well especially in the context of some
of The Moves new orleans has made over the past
give or take eighteen. Months, now yeah between The De
jonte murray trade last year and then obviously these two
disastrous draft pick trades that they made, this year trading

(27:26):
the pacers fully unprotected twenty twenty six first round pick
for the number twenty. Three Pick the pacers currently are one,
and seven tied for the worst record IN, the nba
so non zero chance that they just traded the twenty
three pick in last year's draft for a mid to
high lottery pick in this. Year's draft and then he

(27:49):
compounded that by trading the twenty, three pick along with
the better of either There or milwaukee's first round pick
in twenty twenty six To The atlanta hawks to move
up ten Spots.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
For, derek queen who admittedly has looked good in.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
Recent games so THIS is i feel like any analysis
of that trade just comes up like unnecessarily Harsh Against,
derek queen which is UNFAIR because i Think Like derek
queen could be a very. Good player he would have
to be a Multi Time all star to justify, that
cost especially Like look milwaukee, right now five, and three

(28:27):
that might be a. Bad Pick, new, orleans however is two,
and six tied for the worst record In, the west
and was oh and six before they got to beat
Up on Charlotte without LaMelo And, brandon miller and Then
the Mavericks without Kyrie And.

Speaker 3 (28:43):
ANTHONY davis.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
I believe six of their next, seven, games yes six
of their next seven come against teams that are five hundred.
Or better and the one exception Is The, phoenix suns
who just Beat the brakes Off the Clippers on thursday
and Just Got jalen green he made his. Season debut
So even phoenix is better than their record might indicate.

(29:08):
All this that's a long way of saying there's a
real Chance come november Nineteenth That new orleans is two
and thirteen or three.

Speaker 1 (29:16):
And. TWELVE right i am so glad you said That About,
derek queen because that IS something i have been hammering home,
as well just the fact that when people are laughing,
at him that is putting the plane in the. Wrong
place it has to Go To. Joe Dumars derek queen
didn't ask for these course of events to. Take place

(29:39):
he did not ask to find himself in this situation
where a dimension of pressure is being put. On him
like he just came into the draft wanted to get
picked because, you know he wants to BE an, nba player,
understandably so and the team that got him picked him
first and foremost too high and went above and beyond

(30:01):
to even get that pick that in, no way shape
or form should land at his, feet, Whatsoever right and
that is so important. To remember and because of, THAT
situation i Am so i'm rooting so hard for this
KID because i feel so bad AND like i didn't
even like him as. A prospect, i mean for them

(30:21):
to come in and Pick. A no three not d
center in the lottery was. Immensely stupid but that doesn't fall.
On him that doesn't fall, On, him, like, yes yeah,
GO ahead.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
I mean it's it was, a weird a. WEIRD select,
i mean you're more of the draft guy, than me
so you can speak. To this but like he seems
like a weird Fit with zion. In, particular yes so
it was a, very suspicious like why are you trading
up for this guy who is not a great on
paper fit with the star you are allegedly, building around

(30:57):
unless it was more like we're starting to look ahead
Past the. Zion area we believe this kid could be,
something special and we don't really care how he Fits
with Zion because zion is not actually part of our long.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
Term. Plans right that'd be smarter to, go that, you
know go. That route at the, same, time though you
also have to make sure that the guy you take
is SOMEONE who i don't want to say, has upside
Because Obviously derek queen, has upside but he's gonna be
twenty one, next month so like he's not a. Young
rookie the fact that he's not a, great defender the

(31:33):
fact that he's not a shooter in twenty, twenty five
that just presents another just another layer of tough roster.
Construction ahead. You know it's it's like when seems to,
Do this i'm just flabbercast because whenever, we hear, you
know reports of how smart all these general, managers are,

(31:54):
and like, you know the big front offices with so much,
brain Power sometimes i'm just left one, at times like
what is the thought? Process there like how can you
go so much more against the, grain again like you might, be, thinking,
oh yeah we're galaxy braining ourselves out. Of, this yeah
right around the corners where you're actually slamming your head against.

(32:15):
The wall that's just it's there are SITUATIONS where i
just don't understand the, logic WHATSOEVER and i Really try
bry to like see it from a lot of. Different
perspectives Like With. Derek queen here's. The upside the shot
creation is Like The marcus, cousins esque which. Is good
like a lot of people Will Say, DeMarcus, cousins like

(32:36):
wasn't he bad in the last? Few years, He was
but if you remember Him from sacramento Or Even new
orleans before he, went down the shot creation Capabilities Of
DeMarcus cousins was. Truly elite and if he can get to,
that point that's. An asset but what was the Issue
with DeMarcus for a while? As well before he, started
shooting bry couldn't defend at a high, lever level couldn't

(32:58):
shoot the three until actually started. Doing so but like
you had to tailor everything. Around him, so like Even
If derek queen does Hit The DeMarcus, cousins upside which would.
Be great by, the way there's going to be challenges
ahead because he's not that player where you, can, say
oh he's gonna, hit three he's gonna defend at a.

(33:20):
High level you're, just again you're painting yourself into.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
A corner, why, YEAH right, I mean, i think like
the concern overall About the pelicans outlook is that they
have no incentive to tank this year because they are
gonna lose, that pick so.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Like they have to give it. Their all but.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
The LAST thing i think they, should DO and i
wrote about This is, forbes today is like they should
not be making another win. Now trade they should not
continue trying to mortgage. Their future, Right, around zion who
is again, already hurt Has a grade one. Hamstring strain
they say he's out seven to ten at least knowing how,
Hamstrings are Knowing just zion's injury history, in general, you

(34:08):
know he's played in fewer than half of the games
he could have possibly played in over his career. So,
FAR like i just think at a, certain point you,
you know you, look back AND like i was looking
back on this. Last night what They Traded anthony davis
for and it was three first round picks Brandon Ingram,
Lonzo Ball. Josh hart six, years later you don't have

(34:31):
a ton to show. For that and then you Make
this dejonte trade, last year which is already looking like
a just. Total disaster you make these two draft pick trades.
This year, you know it feels to me Like the
pelicans were reacting to what Happened With anthony davis where
they tried to build slowly around him and it never,

(34:54):
you know they could never like consistently build a contender.
Around him So with, zion there like we're going to
go pedal to, the metal like we're going to, Be
aggressive we're going, to pursue, you know we want we
don't want to slow roll. This thing and it's like
they already cashed in their chips to the POINT that,
I mean i guess THEY have i Believe a milwaukee

(35:17):
pick in twenty twenty seven or pick swap Actually That
new orleans gets the more favorable of its Pick or,
milwaukee's pick And then atlanta gets the less favorable of
the two unless.

Speaker 3 (35:36):
Unless both are within the.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
Top four, Oh.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
YEAH so i mean they don't have a ton of future.
Draft capital they've traded like most of their. Second, ROUNDERS yeah,
i mean, good lord.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
So they did hit so Far On. Jeremiah fears we
got to give them, this.

Speaker 2 (35:56):
Though SURE and i Mean Like herb jones is, A
Hit trey murphy is. A hite i Mean Getting sadik
bay And The jordan POOLE trade i think was, a
nice little savvy piece of business, For them Like the
alvarado was a. Great find like they have hit some
moves on. The margins but you go back to the
same question when we're Asking, about memphis which is how

(36:18):
do you how do you go FROM, point a which
is like you've got this nice supporting cast TO point b,
of well we need some other Stars, around zion And
Like TREY murphy i think could be one of. THOSE
guys i know he's shooting terribly, this year but, YOU
know i like we've Seen when zion, Is Out trey

(36:38):
murphy's actually typically. Very good, yeah YEAH but i still
don't think he's like a. TRUE star i, think he's,
you know a really really good high, end starter but
NOT like i don't know that he has multi time all.
Star UPSIDE and i don't know How the pelicans find
those types of players, in more given their, asset trove

(37:03):
given like their, contract status, moving forward just feels like
they're kind. Of STUCK but i, ALSO like i don't,
NECESSARILY think, i Mean trading zion right now at the
deer of his value also seems to be a, Bad
IDEA so i don't really know where they go from
here other Than, please god do not continue to mortgage
more of your future and dig yourself into an even

(37:25):
bigger hole when, you know realistically like you just should
not be talking yourself into we can build a title
Contender Around zion.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
WILLIAMSON anymore i.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Wonder if the sexual, assault allegations if they hadn't, come
up if sign would even have Been In new orleans,
right now because over the course of, the summer we
heard a lot of noise About, the bulls, for example
who have all their, draft picks who have expiring deals
and some it was like they were. Gearing up then
came the allegations and everything. Went, AWAY yeah i truly

(38:04):
wonder if there was some some discussions, going on if
there was, something there because that was too much noise
for me.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
To IGNORE and i think what's Different about zion versus
some of the other like big name trade can is.
LIKE jaw, i Mean the pelicans were really smart and
how they structured his latest contract and like they built
an escape patch after every, season basically so like, YOU
know i think either a small portion of his contract

(38:33):
for next year is guaranteed at this point or is fully.
NON guaranteed i don't remember the, exact specifics but, either
way it's like you're not gonna have to eat thirty
five plus million of dead money if you wave the
guy like you can wave.

Speaker 3 (38:46):
Them whatever, you know they.

Speaker 2 (38:50):
Any team that trades for him is not inheriting the risk, Of,
like okay we're going to trade for, this guy he
still can't, stay healthy and we're gonna have him on
our books for three. More years, it's, like well trade,
for HIM and i can't stay healthy even, in, Peace,
Homi right.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
And now you know we all have to WAIT because
i don't assume that a lot of teams are are
willing to trade for a guy who has those allocations hanging,
over him which is going to delay the project For
the pelicans, as well because if they were planning to
pivot off of him before the trade deedline, this year,
for example well Guess what now you're not going to
be Able to like now you're gonna have to make

(39:25):
a call, of okay let's just stick with him for
now or potentially coming into, next year like, you said
use the, escape patch which, oh, man no it's. It's
ROUGH but i mean the two trades that you alluded
To That joe, dumars pulled pulled off almost phrase it
because like he did not pull off anything like literally

(39:48):
the talks called them up asking them to confirm.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
The trade are?

Speaker 1 (39:55):
You sure are? You right like just just this if
you get a call, like that if you've, offered something
let's say you found some Something, On facebook marketplace or what,
have you and you're giving a guy an offer for
a chair and he's calling you back and asking you are?

(40:16):
You sure is that where you're propride just takes over and,
Go yes i'm sure or are? You realizing oh that
call may INDICATE that i automatically overestimated the worst of
that Chair on.

Speaker 2 (40:29):
Facebook, marketplace, yes YES and I know dumars is the
easy punching, Bag HERE but i think our mutual Friend
schmid Dua of In the know has wisely, and corrected
correctly pointed OUT that i think the problem is one step, Above,
him yes And That, gail benson the owner of Both
the pelicans And The New, orleans saints just clearly does

(40:52):
not give a damn About. The PELICANS and i THINK
that i would, imagine that more than, anything else is
the reason that they Haven't traded zion already Is that zion.
Went healthy is the main box, OFFICE straw i. WOULD
imagine i don't know the specifics of any shoe deal.
HE has i don't know if he, sells shoes, but like,
you know he is there the reason to come See

(41:16):
a pelicans Game In. New orleans they already have one
of the lowest attendances in. The, LEAGUE like i don't
think she has the appetite to do a, you know
processed style of real build or do What the wizards
are doing, this year What the nets are doing. This
year she just has never wanted to. Do THAT so
i think it's just a, you know a indifferent ownership

(41:39):
group or an ownership group that is not paying it
close enough attention, To, know like how do we get
they don't care about building a. CHAMPIONSHIP contender i guess the,
bottom line they care about putting butts, in seats scuffling
your way of thirty five to, forty wins maybe making,
The playoffs but they are not taking the hard steps
and they're not asking themselves the heart questions of how

(42:02):
do we get from where we are right now back into,
sustainable contention probably because they haven't done that in a very.

Speaker 3 (42:11):
Long time but.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
They're also failing of putting butts, In seats bry like
they're not even doing a good job. With THAT so
i don't want to go this FAR like i. Want to,
you know YOU and i we We Appreciate simid Dua
and mason can spirk, A TON so i don't want
to put this out like they'll they'll be frustrated with.
This question if, THEY were i know where you're going
should be that be in.

Speaker 2 (42:33):
The, CARDS no i don't THINK like i don't think
you have to move. THE team i think you have
to sell. The team but see she's not gonna.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
DO that i mean.

Speaker 3 (42:47):
Forcible Takeover adam silver needs to flex.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
His muscles AND like i, DON'T know i mean IT
like i guess like she's not gonna move the team
Out Of. New orleans she's gonna sell the team if
they're going to move Out Of.

Speaker 1 (43:01):
NEW orleans i should. Hope so but like the launching
from her perspective, might, be oh let's find a.

Speaker 3 (43:07):
Big, market yeah like if you move Them, to.

Speaker 1 (43:10):
Seattle See Sign, Williamston seattle like for, for her that
might be a. MAJOR asset, I mean i.

Speaker 3 (43:18):
Guess SO but i don't think the Problem Is. NEW
orleans i.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
WOULD imagine, i, mean like Look At, oklahoma, City right
like not anyone would consider a, big market but you
build a sustainable contender there and those fans go absolutely
crazy and you're putting. Button SEATS like i think if
you build a winning, basketball team team players or fans
will want to come. See them if you build, a,

(43:43):
team yeah. That's fair if you put forth minimal effort
and it's transparent on, the court then like of course
fans are. Checked out why wouldn't they be?

Speaker 1 (43:51):
Checked out so, you're saying Trading For jordan poole didn't do.
The trick.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
Maybe if they Trade For Draymond, oh god just HAVE
an mma event before.

Speaker 3 (44:03):
Every game that could.

Speaker 1 (44:04):
Be Fun trey Murphy For. DRAYMOND green i, could say, oh, god.

Speaker 3 (44:11):
Yeah Yeah The Golden state warriors and another splash brother And.
The pelicans maybe they can have the fight On The white.
House line THAT'S the Ufc.

Speaker 1 (44:19):
FIGHT trump i will, SAY this i think your point.
Is true like it's there's a little, you know field
of dreams. About it like if you, build it they. Will,
Come yeah like, You're right like if you do build a,
SUSTAINABLE product I, think okay see it's a really. Good
EXAMPLE then i, just wonder or not wonder we can

(44:40):
we can just say under this current, Administration, administration sorry
it's late ownership, Group Obviously i've i've been thinking about
polls too. Much lately it's not gonna. Work, out like
let's just, be real because you need an ownership group.
That's invested you need a front office group that. Is,

(45:03):
competant sorry that's let's just be real that what we've
seen so Far Under joe dumars and the team he's,
installed there it's not even been close. To competant it
just hasn't the, a loan the two draft pick traits
that immediately disqualified from. That discussion so if you don't

(45:24):
have a front office that knows what, they're doing and
you have an ownership group that is just, completely disengaged
what the hell are they going to? Do here what
is the future of? THIS team i know that's a
really sour question, To, ask YEAH but i think it's a.

(45:45):
REASONABLE one, I.

Speaker 2 (45:47):
Mean i think it's just business. AS usual i don't
think they're going to deviate from. THIS plan i think
they're going to continue being kind of stuck in the
mud and they're going to lose a mid to high
lottery pick in this year's draftone's gonna make fun of them.
For it maybe that forces them to. Reconsider it, BUT
like i, DON'T know, I mean i don't see what

(46:11):
the impetus is gonna be if this constant state of
embarrassment is not already made them reach the point, of
like we need to change how we've, Approached things like
Going From.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
David Griffin To joe dumars Was not it was not the.

Speaker 1 (46:30):
Answer, Here, SO brian i think we're gonna split this
into two episodes because we're already forty five minutes long on.
Two teams so we will say thank you for listening
in on, this one and in the next episode we'll
do it's going to Be The dallas Mavericks And orlando
matchic because those two teams are also in the they have.
Some issues should we just put it that way? As well, that's,

(46:52):
yes yes that is the great Optimistic positivetyser for, next
time let's talk more about teams. About panicking so until we,
speak again have a good one and stay, safe everyone

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
