this point. It's time for our rookie check in. We
are going to begin with the Eastern Conference, because there
are two conferences, and we are going to begin with
this one. That is the logic that we are rooted
in for this podcast before we go in, just to
give our thoughts, evaluations have some overarching questions for certain
teams and their rookies or their rookie class.

We are settling in nicely to the season, right like
a month in now, we're finally working with some data
that we can actually use instead of like those first
two or three games where everything is wacky and no
one can really say anything with any type of confidence.
Like it's still early, but we're still in. We're in

like that twelve to fourteen game threshold where the data
is stacking up now you can rely on certain things
like Kelton Johnson's offensive rebounding. Initially was like, is that
a real thing? It seems so, Yeah, it's a real thing.

This is a good time of year because it does
feel like certain things are starting to crystallize. What we're
about to talk about, though, is kind of it's not
the opposite, but rookies are just inherently turbulent to where
will they hit the rookie wall. Will these rookies that
some people are already writing off all of a sudden
pop later in the year. So we're not here to
make any sweeping declarations except for the fact that I'm

going to make plenty of sweeping declary.

We're gonna just bounce around from teams and we're not look,
I was a Chaslinear guy, but we're not gonna spend
eight minutes talking about the very few minutes that Chaslyn
Year has played for the Pistons. We're trying to look
at situations that are a little bit more notable and
looking at guys that have built up these larger sample sizes.
Which team, which rookie would you like to begin with more.

Well, I would like to extend my apologies to Konkk
Nipple first and foremost. So here's the thing. When he
came into the league, or when I watched him in college,
I thought he would be a year two player because
I you know, he's not overly athletic.

I think that's fair to say.

And I thought his floor game, while solid, I thought
that was it wasn't as advanced. So I figured he's
probably gonna just get smacked around in the first year,
and then the year two he's going to have like
a really good year.

No, I'm I'm just gonna land on my feet pretty well,
and I'm just going to use my I don't even
want to say limited athleticism, but you know, I'm just
going to use my savvy, my basketball IQ. I'm going

to get to. Oh, I'm gonna hit forty percent from
the three point line. I'm gonna hit practically ninety from
the line, and I'm just gonna be an overwhelmingly.

I liked Conkin Eppo coming out of the draft, but
I didn't know what to expect from him and Charlotte.
We probably should have banked on Hey, there will be
injuries and he'll have a pretty big role regardless, and
he had a pretty big role before LaMelo was banged up.
He's back now, Brandon Miller banged up. I think what
has impressed me most is that he is someone who
can be in some of those secondary units.

The basis for your entire offense, and he's not on
the ball for a lot of those, like the passing
out of drives, just the movement, like he can make
quick decisions with the ball in his hands, he can
do something he could do plenty with the ball in
his hands, but just being able to move coming off screens,
knocking down shots, constant pressure even when he doesn't have
the ball, which I know is what he was kind
of billed as. But we've already seen a ton of

it without LaMelo, without Brandon Miller on the court, and
it looks really good. And I also probably just underestimated
the value in his positional size because he's six' seven
and it's players of his archetype you don't maybe now
we're getting to a point where you, do but you
don't look at them and you expect them to be

For him i'm not putting it. PAST him i think
what we've seen so far has been. Very encouraging, you
know we're looking at for three assists, per game but
that is just not in any way A real i
don't think it represents his real value as a. Passer
whatsoever like he's playing on a team that Does, have

LaMelo so there are you know guards That calling sexton,
As well like is that guy who has the ball
in his hands a fair bit when? He's there it's
it's one of those situations where his passing is better
than what the. NUMBERS indicate i will need to see
it over an. Extended stretch and you, know this this Is.

The hornets so we'll get, it eventually because, you know
that's one thing we can always count on With. The
hornets some guy's gonna miss, twenty games, forty games, forty
games that is unfortunately just. The thing so we just
have to be patient and we'll. Find OUT but i,
SO far i don't see an argument for why that
would be. An issue, you know he's he's very patient

in the way that he, probes defenses and it's OUTSIDE
like i think the more that he get accustomed TO
the nba clock and the speed of, the game the
more he's going to use that patience to. His advantage,
you know there's there are a couple things like from
certain angles as ball hanfort that you just that's not
something you can. Plan ahead so that's that's just trial
and error that goes for every single player IN. The

his system, THIS year i wouldn't be surprised if next

i made Fun of charlotte's center rotation, in general and

world beader but they have more confident big man play
on their TEAM that i. Was Expecting ryan kalkbrenner is
a huge part. Of that he's conventionally ginormous and knows

his limitations. On offense there's some like a little bit
OF range i could throw up a flip shot or
hook shot outside of that, restricted area but he just
knows where he needs to finish on the offensive end

defensive activity his room deterrence. As well he's he has

so if you want to get up and down, THE
floor i think you can play with him.

drafted cmb might make some.

if he was considered. Their SECOND most intriguing prospect and

can do stuff where he's switching away from the ball to,

and he's not super huge but he looks to me
like someone who could really guard up and he made
he will make life on comfortable for, anyone who has
the ball anyone, who doesn't have the ball who's trying.
TO run around the floor i don't know. What he,
IS just yet on offense i think that we've seen
some he shooting, okay on drives this year but very
low volume kind of. HIT or miss from three I

they might have you look, at EVERYONE else they drafted,
and i think you're wondering do they have a two

surprisingly so because again ONE of these guys who i
thought was, going to, take a while highly athletic very
much not THAT refined as, you and c you know,
was getting plenty of minutes not really, providing a lot
of production like he was pretty sure horned into like

a defensive minded. Set role and you were you didn't
really feel comfortable whenever he. Had to do more offensively
i'm not sure how many of these guys just because
of THE increased spacing at the nba level and they
come in, and they just show more whether that's a
thing or if he just basically spend the, entire Summer
going OH yeah. NOW i'm an nba player i have

to be able to score points in order to actually
MAINTAIN my. Status as an nba, player but he looks.
Better he looks more comfortable it's, a really small sample,
Size only Seven Games played so like i'm i'm hoping
there's a, level of, SUSTAINABILITY here because like you i,
THINK he's Intriguing at, least I just, i'm excited, but

i'm not you know as Excited at, that, point, where
i'm like oh yeah like this this was the guy,
They should have picked. EARLIER like at Twenty, two i
think he's. Yeah he's a fair pick he might be
the only, one, where, you can say oh yeah this
justifies the position and like this justifies the draft, WITH praise, there, Right.

Yeah i KNOW sorry well because they i, on that
DRAFT at all which.

IS i think that's fair i look at him as
just he's, probably because for me anyway the expectations. Were
so muted coming in he might be The prospect from
them that, i've been most excited about but it also
just it came without a, ton of, BACKGROUND on it
so right i, guess, the.

Bigger question is though is it concerning that.

They have these five rookies it's kind of really only
worth focusing on two of them right when you're looking
at their play on the court. Or how much they've
played how big of a concern is that when we
are so early on, IN this, process for you i.

Mean you draft five, guys in, THE first round and look,
i don't want to simplify but the highest point total
of any one of them is seven points per game
on a team that is just so drastically need, of
people to do something be that just. Something as, simple
as scoring like you just none of these guys so far.

Has stepped into a role none of these guys is
not really at least like, YOU can you can argue
i guess you can argue that they have and where, the,
team is intentionally saying hey look we're not going to
throw you into the fire at forty minutes, thirty five minutes,
PER night which you know i see the advantages of,

them are barely playing and where you can't rely on,
them to hit a shot or where there are a
lot of. Defensive and even offensive inconsistencies LIKE there's a

baseline on any one, Of THESE guys coming in and
i can respect to some extent that they were swinging

everyone was looking at them you were questioning the. Long

term effects, as well you were questioning what is? This
guy in five years? What is this ultimate, potential so
my ultimate Fear and, that's probably why i'm skeptical is
that these guys are only going to get so want.
