Speaker 2 (00:33):
I'm Nora Murray. You're listening to News Talk Saga nine sixty. Hey,

looking forward to speaking with a couple of special people
joining us here at News Talk Saga nine sixty with
a brand new show. A brand new show which starts
on Monday. It's called Next Chapter Chats. Next Chapter Chats
Mondays at three o'clock in the afternoon every Monday, and

(00:55):
then a repeat on the weekends too, which is really
fun ten o'clock Saturday nights. Finally something to do that's
really interesting and informative and important on a Saturday night.
Penelope Mathison joins us. She is executive director and host
as well as Pat Brown, creator and host. And this show,
from what I understand, Ladies, is where real women have
real conversations about what comes next, and that could be health, reinvention, purpose, relationships,

(01:21):
and the courage to keep growing.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I welcome you both. Pat Brown, first of all, Hello.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
To you, Hello to you too. And I have to
say that all of those things morphed together to create
a successful it's successful aging.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Okay, that's what we're all about.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Penelope. Thanks for joining us today. How are you.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
I'm really well normal.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
Nice to meet you.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Nice to meet you both.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
I'm going to add on.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
To that, it's about making the rest of your life
the best of your life.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh I like that too, right, yeah, thank you? So
how did he How did the two of you come
together for of all to create this really interesting show
called Next Chapter chats?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Who wants to take this one? How did it happen?

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Well, I'll start with that one. The original concept all
came out of me. I'm now sixty seven, but I
was sixty four at the time, going into early retirement
early by one year.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
But truthfully, I hadn't really thought about.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
It, and finding that I didn't know what came next,
I didn't know how to make this wonderful. And so
I started talking to other.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Women of an age and said, what are you guys doing?

Speaker 1 (02:37):
And it turned out we all had the same question,
what does come next? What is the next chapter? I
don't want to be old, you know, that's got an
interesting connotation to the world, And so what do we do?
And from it came the conversations of the next chapter chats.
Year one, we talked about needing representation. We needed to

(03:02):
understand what aging was like because nobody gets to see
women age. Season two, we started to talk about women's
health and realized that there's such a limited understanding of
mature women's health. And then Penelope and I got together
and we became more, so much more, and we started

(03:22):
to grow in Now we're here.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Would you agree with that?

Speaker 1 (03:27):
But helping?

Speaker 5 (03:28):
Oh darling, we have arrived and it didn't happen that
long ago, right, No, it's been whirlwind. Pat and I
met through a mutual friend, well by email, but we
didn't meet until less than a year ago, late October

(03:49):
twenty four, and we formed our partnership the end of
twenty four. In December, we revamped the podcast, just jures
it up a little bit, and we reenacted that starting
in the spring, and then fast forward through a dear
friend of mine who had had a television had had

(04:11):
I keep saying television, no more video, who had had
a program on nine to six the Today's parent magazine
actually curbulous show. Yeah, Jane Bradley, great show, great program,
smart lady yes, and she said, you know, have you
ever got about radio? This is what you need to

(04:32):
be doing. I went nope, never thought about it. She said,
would you like me to connect you? And literally, in
less than three months, she connected us with the station
and we had the pleasure of meeting proven who became
instant instant friends.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Our sales.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Oh, it just moves so quickly, and now here we are.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
Literally relaunching our show on Monday, October the twentieth at
three o'clock. It's incredible. But what we are we are
doing is we're literally feeding the audio portion of our
podcast on Southern nine sixty am for the first six
to eight weeks, and then we'll be going live, pre recorded,

(05:13):
but live.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
And by the way, you can find their podcast on
Spotify wherever you get your favorite podcasts.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
It's called Next Chapter Chats.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
N E X T C HP T R C H
A T S Next Chapter Chats and oh thank you
and do like do like I did. I just went
to your website, by the way, next Chapter Chats dot com.
Oh do you see you're online watching your website while
talking to me?

Speaker 4 (05:43):
Because I just phone?

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Oh does it?

Speaker 2 (05:46):
The reason I bring it up as I subscribe to
your newsletter, and I encourage everybody to do that too.
You're also on Facebook and Instagram and on YouTube with
your own channel there Next Chapter Chats dot com. What
can we expect from your newsletter?

Speaker 1 (06:02):
We handle issues that we aggregate for the world. What's
happening in the world, and what impact does it have
on women and women's health. Penelope has a special.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
What do you call it?

Speaker 1 (06:20):
So I got how a section where you talk about
health and lifestyle and fitness.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
And philanthropy and volunteerism. And also I just want to
point out when such category it's mental, it's physical, it's emotional,
it can even be spiritual. It is a huge category,
so it takes a great deal of conversations to get through.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Oh. Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
We're speaking with Pat Brown and also with Penelope Matheson.
They are co hosts of a brand new show debuting
on Monday at three o'clock in the afternoon every Monday
at three and then repeating on Saturday nights at ten.
It's called Next Chapter Chats here on Newstalk Oksaga nine
sixty And I mean, the two of you together seem
to have found a way to mesh very quickly you

(07:07):
know what, when you're co hosting, and I've co hosted
with a number of people over the years, it's not
as easy as it sounds. You got to be able
to bounce off each other, compliment each other when you're
working together, without you know, trampling on each other and
all of that. I mean, you find you're comfortable talking
obviously in your podcast already, and that's amazing so quickly.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Oh yeah, well friends, that helps, yeah, friends, yes, and
and respect each other and.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
It's just it's it's just been good.

Speaker 5 (07:38):
Yeah, so good women.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
That was the whole.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Concept here, is that women we have the ability to talk.

Speaker 6 (07:50):
We that's what we do. It's listening to one another,
to feeling somebody else's thoughts, but really to understand and
learn from that form of communication totally.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
I'm just going to add to that point. We believe,
in short, we believe that aging is in fact our superpower.
We're not expired, we're.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Not going anywhere.

Speaker 5 (08:16):
We're very busy, we're very active, and we're super empowered.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
You know, I'm just reading from the information I was
given that the next Chapter Chats, that's the name of
the show. Next Chapter Chats is more than a show,
as you guys say, it's a community where women come
to be seen, heard, and inspired through honest dialogue and
thoughtful guests. What can we expect going forward here? Each
will each week be radically different?

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Or what have you got planned for us coming up?
For example on Monday?

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Well, all right, this week we're talking over one another community.
This week we are in do see the show, So
we'll really be introducing Penelope and myself our first episode,
our first episode, so we're just going to introduce ourselves

(09:10):
to you and introduce the concept of the show, and
then going forward we will have interviews with others.

Speaker 6 (09:19):
We will delve into topics like spiritual with me, overcoming adversity,
overcoming especially health adversity. There's nobody actually plans for that
or thinks about it, finding a sense of fulfillment through
volunteerism or through finving new purpose. We will sit in

(09:43):
too much speaker into women's health initiatives because there is
so much going on immature women's health that is only
just starting to come forward because it hasn't been part
of the studied piece of medicine in the past, and
we're going to start talking to the experts. So legal experts.

(10:04):
How do you protect yourself as you age as things
start happening?

Speaker 5 (10:10):
Do you afford it experts?

Speaker 6 (10:12):
All of the people that you know, the information that
would make it a lot easier to make some.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
To have this sort of information as you go forward.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
You know, were just as an episode last week which
is really interesting. We had we had Royal Guiney real
Estate and someone from a representative from home Stairlift, and
it was really around aging in place or thriving in place,
because many couples as they retire, don't retire at the

(10:45):
same pace, and often the male might retire or age
faster than the woman. So those decisions start as early
as in their fifties. What are we going to do?
If you know, what are we going to do if
someone has Parkinson's or Alzheimer's or any any kind of

(11:06):
life changing or life altering situation? How do you deal
with that? Where do you go for resources? Where do
you find your community? So there's a lot of un
chartered territory sort of when you hit over fifty five,
there's a lot of new because we're creating this. This
didn't exist before. It was thought that you reach a

(11:27):
certain age and you just retire and that's it. But
it isn't. It's the start of something else, the Next Chapter.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
I love the whole idea of it.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Each episode diving into issues, stories, and you're also going
to have some fun too. There's some laughs, oh of course,
because what else I mean really, as we as we age,
there's a lot.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
To laugh about. If we can laugh about, you have
to laugh exactly.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
If you don't laugh, you're in trouble. Yeah, totally.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Whether you're navigating change, rediscovering yourself, or looking for community,
this is where you'll find your people.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
I love this.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
It's called Next Chapter Chats, a brand new program airing
this Monday at three o'clock in the afternoon. The inaugural show,
the debut show is this Monday at three pm and
then repeating every Saturday at ten pm. You don't want
to miss an episode, so that's why you can also
check it out on Spotify.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
The ladies have their podcast.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
There, and remember to follow them on all the social
media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and also on their
own YouTube channel. Next Chapter Chats dot com is the
website that's an ext cchptr.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Chats dot com.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Next Chapter Chats dot Com subscribe to the newsletter. You've
got a really beautiful website. I have to compliment you.
I don't know if you guys are the ones who
put it all together, but it's very easy to navigate.
Your podcast link, is their YouTube, a blog and such.
And I look forward to every newsletter that comes out.
So I think it's going to be absolutely fascinating. But

(12:59):
I mean, you guys are really touched upon something there,
like you say, that's never really been done before. But
there's a real need for it, isn't it. I mean,
we are an aging society now right.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
We're the largest population segments.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Yeah, exactly, and it's it's so important that we have
the information is to go forward. We need to know
that you don't age and fall off the maps, that
you have as much to give and do now as
you've ever given your life.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Absolutely, I mean there's so many avenues to go down.
I mean, even when you're just speaking a moment ago
about real estate, about the the stare master that's not
the right word stair excuse.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
Me, long stareless home sta.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
You know what.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
That's interesting to me too.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
I Mean we all have people in our lives that
are aging we're all aging, and I am interested in
hearing more about that stuff. We see that on TV,
and I don't really know what it's all about. So
I love the I've got somebody talking about it.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
Great, thank you.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Well, I mean, did you know and I didn't until
we spoke to this young woman that you can rent
a scare list just for when you're rehabbing from knee surgery.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Oh I didn't know that.

Speaker 5 (14:15):
Wow a month.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
It's for one month.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
It gets put in and taken out in less than
an hour.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
So it's not just aging.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
Well, that's part of.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Aging though, because your needs get blown out or you're
hitn't get blown out. You don't, I know an athlete
to yees, I moved because I didn't know this sort
of thing happened.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
I left.

Speaker 5 (14:39):
You couldn't take this.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
As people are learning about the name of the show
and what it's kind of about. Like we've been describing.

Speaker 3 (14:46):
Next chapter chats, I want to ask.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Each one of you individually. Pattle'll start with you, how
you what you've been doing in your life if you will,
I mean public life and such and and what has
brought you ultimately to some thing like this and this
interest there must be something along the way in your path.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
That has brought you here. What would you do? How
would you describe that?

Speaker 1 (15:11):
I would just say, I'm all about community. And honestly,
this whole conversation started because I reached out to my
community and asked them for what were they doing, what
was what was their answer to this aging issue, and
what was keeping them busy. It's just a way of

(15:33):
finding out information because I love to have information. I
love to be informed and to have these conversations. So
that's what it was really important to me. I came
from an industry of advertising and marketing, and this just
seemed to be the logical way to go about fighting

(15:54):
and then disseminating information.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Yeah, and for you, Penelope Mathis, and also I mean
what you have your own history in work and in
social activities and such and recreation and giving back to
the community and all those things we try as just
an I guess quote unquote normal people to try and
do in our lives. But what have you been doing

(16:18):
for somebody who doesn't know you.

Speaker 5 (16:21):
Thanks for referring to me as normal.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
First of all, that I really appreciate that norm That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Okay, So.

Speaker 5 (16:28):
I had a massive corporate career, very privileged from that,
I went into the nonprofit sector because really just of
my volunteerism, which developed at a very it grew to
a very high level. I became very much involved with
philanthropy and with giving back to community and serving and
serving on boards, and it was just a logical transition

(16:52):
for me. That being said, I've also done a fair
amount of work in Mississauga. In the twenty years that
I've lived here. I've served on three different boards including
Trillium Health Partners Foundation, the Art Gallery of Mississauga, and
also CJ's Gate Parks. And I've done I'm going to
guess twelve to fourteen years of events and attended just

(17:14):
about everything. So it really I'm just I'm so entrenched
in this community, and I'm so entrenched into the health,
the mental health, the physical health and fitness of everyone.
And so when I see what's happening with particularly with women,
and this process of all of a sudden, you reach
a certain age and you're, I guess supposed to retire.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
I wasn't ready to retire. I'm not sure I could.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Afford to retire and live for another thirty forty years
as comfortably as I have been. So I'm looking for
purpose and that's when I came up with the idea
of doing a podcast. Hence are being introduced joining Pat's
podcast and here we are. So it's just been an
cudible journey.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Next Chapter Chats is the name of the show every Monday,
starting this coming Monday at three pm on News Talk
SAGA nine sixty Next Chapter Chats. Check out their website
like I did, subscribe to the newsletter. It's next cchptr
chats dot com and it's very easy to navigate, like

(18:21):
we were saying, and there's a lot of great information
there too. The show is going to be outstanding. As
you ladies say here in the description, Life after fifty
five isn't the end, it's the beginning and that opens
up a Pandora's box of topics. I'm sure, so I
really look forward to it. Yeah, it's going to be outstanding.

(18:42):
Both of you and I thank you both for being here.
Is there something else you want to get out to
the masses prior to your first show though? Is there
anything you want to mention or talk about while we're here?

Speaker 1 (18:53):
Oh, just to tune in and become part of the conversation.
We would really love people to send in. This is
stop us on the streets. Do whatever you can because
it's what you want to know about that we want
to give you and what.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
What can we expect on your YouTube channel? By the way,
I haven't looked that up yet, but I absolutely will.
You have your own YouTube channel nextecast. The podcast is
on YouTube. Okay, yeah, so you're going to be recording that,
continuing to record that, I guess on video and that
will include guests from time.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
To time, right every week every week?

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Yes, great, Yes, different people, different topics, I mean, every
single topic that we've had to take.

Speaker 4 (19:38):
Far more than an hour to really get into.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
But in an hour we try to give you something
that will make your day easier, something that will give
you a reason to smile, something that says my yes,
I understand, I know exactly what they're speaking about.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
Well, if we can follow up.
