Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey, everybody, Welcome back to the Oily Academy podcast. I'm
Wendy's Salvag, your host, and I'm so glad you're here
if you're new to the show. I'm a Level two
NAHA professional certified aroma therapist and I run the Aroma
Science Academy, an online school where you can become a
certified aroma therapist. You can check it out at the

(00:24):
Aromascience Academy dot com. Now. I've also I've been doing
this show for years. I have a background in research
and natural health research. I work for a nonprofit organization
as a researcher, have been doing that for a long time.
So I love looking at ways to help the body naturally.
So that's just a part of my personality who I am,

(00:45):
what I love. I also am involved with Young Living
Essential Oils. I've been involved in that company for a
long time. I chose Young Living Oils because when I
was getting certified as aroma therapist, I'm learning about all
the different companies out there and learn that really a
very high percentage of essential oil companies they just buy

(01:08):
their oils from the same like ten distilleries around the world.
And the problem is that most of those distilleries are
perfume industry, not health industry. It's perfume industry. Distilleries have
metals in their vats with distillation, and so you might
get aluminum toxicity. You know that it's going to leach
into the oils and that's going to affect your health.

(01:29):
Not a problem if you're just you know, creating a
I guess a perfume for the air, but definitely a
problem if you're treating yourself or you know, using it
to support your health in your body. And man, you know,
if you have a scary skin diagnosis and you're trying
to really help your body, support your body to heal,

(01:50):
and you put an oil on there that has aluminum
in it, you're just feeding the disease, right, So you
got to know that your oils are safe. And so anyway,
that is where I've chosen Young Living. I love that
their oils are all distilled in surgical stainless steel, so
there's no heavy metals. They really do it right, and
they're setting industry standards for purity, for not using pesticides

(02:14):
in their fields. They do things and I only know
this because I've asked the farm manager, like I've been
to several of the farms, and I've cornered them and
I've asked them questions. So the farm manager I talked
to at a farm in Mona, Utah, said that they
take barometric pressure readings every fifteen minutes when they're harvesting,
because if the barometric pressure rises or falls to a

(02:38):
certain degree, then all the medicinal constituents that you're looking
for in your lavender oil they go down into the
root ball of the plant, and so if the barometric
pressure is off, you'll harvest your oil. You get it.
It smells like lavender, smells wonderful. But the constituents you
want for calming and for helping you sleep and so

(03:00):
relaxing and those kinds of things, they're not there. So
most companies, I've never heard of a company doing that before,
and a lot of companies just it's today's the day
we harvest the oil, and we just harvest it, and
depending on what the barometric pressure was that day, you
may or may not get some benefits from it. That
Young Living knows that people are specifically looking for those

(03:21):
constituents because they buy their lavender because they want help sleeping,
They want help relaxing, So they're going to make sure
and so then they run it through this barrage of
tests that make sure all those constituents are there, and
if they're not, they don't sell that oil. So they're
very specific about using the oils for health reasons and

(03:42):
not just for perfumery and for smelling good. And so
they're also the only brand I know of that have
actually a label on their oils that say you can
use them internally. And you have to be very, very
very careful, and as a room with therapist, I have
to be very careful to tell you, like, don't ever
take essential oils internally if you do not know certain things.

(04:05):
There's certain things you've got to know. Distilled in surgical
stainless steel, you do not want to ingest aluminum. It
is not good for you. The industry is not required
to put on the labels anywhere that if it was
distilled in aluminum or not, like or if it has
any metal toxicity or not. So when you are at
the store and you're looking at the bottles of essential oil,
even whole foods, I've gone and I'm like, okay, surely

(04:27):
whole foods have some right they're all labeled on the
back and they'll say not for internal use. Right, they
know they don't want to be held liable because they
know that damage could be done because their oils are
not pure. Right, But they don't have to tell you
why they're not pure. They don't have to disclose anything.
But there's a lot of things in the industry that
are done. They'll add thinners or chemicals to it. If

(04:48):
it's cheaper oil, it's because they've thinned it out. You know,
there's a lot of reasons to be very very leery
of essential oils and especially taking them internally, and there
are some uses that would very beneficial to take them internally.
You just got to know they're safe. So anyway, that
is why I chose Young Living. I'm not telling you
you have to choose Young Living, but Young Living essential

(05:11):
oils they actually have them labeled for the Vitality line.
If you get a vitality oil, it is labeled for
internal use, and you know that it's safe to take internally.
That was a rabbit hole. Sorry, we haven't even talked
about peppermint yet, but we're talking about peppermint essential oil today.
I'm going to tell you about the benefits. I'm gonna
give you a little bit of a little history and

(05:35):
a little bit about where that it grows. And I
don't want to take up too much of your time,
but peppermint is a really, really beneficial oil. Peppermint oil.
Let me tell you just real quick here the benefits,
the health benefits. Right, so you have the area of
energy and alertness, you know, if you need a quick
pick me up. Peppermint is great for boosting focus and energy.

(05:59):
You can use it you've ever seen the diffusers, or
you can just inhale it straight from the bottle. You
can put a couple drops on your hands, rub your
hands together, cut them over your face, over your nose,
and just breathe. That's my favorite way is just to
breathe it from my hands, just to take a minute
and relax. And that minute is for yourself. That's self care, right.

(06:22):
It's like even if you're having a busy day, you
can take a minute for you and breathe and focus,
close your eyes, breathe the peppermint in and realize you're
doing this for you. That is that is so helpful,
it's so stressed relieving. Peppermint is also used for when
you have tension or discomfort in your head. There's a

(06:46):
lot of reasons why you might have a headache, right
You might you might have hormone imbalance, you might be dehydrated,
you might have you know, need some electrolytes. There's a
lot of reasons. So I'm not saying that like peppermint
is a cure for headaches, because that's not the function.

(07:07):
But the peppermint relieves all the tension no matter what
the cause of the headache. Usually you have tension around
your shoulders, your neck, your head. You want to close
your eyes, you just want to go lay down and
get rid of this thing. Right, Well, peppermint can help you.
You can put it on your shoulders, you can put
it on the back of your neck, you can put

(07:29):
it around your hairline, put it on your temples, and
then you can put some in your hands and breathe
it and it helps open up blood vessels and it helps
bring oxygen to your brain. It helps you relax and
calm and relieve the stress. I think it's a really
great tool when I feel that way, when I need
a little support as my body tries to get rid

(07:50):
of that headache. For you know itself. Now. Another thing
is digestive support. Peppermint is well known as a digestive oil.
Can sooth if your stomach's upset or your esophagus is
on fire. I mean you can inhale if you have
it labeled for you know, internal use. You could take

(08:12):
a little teaspoon of some coconut oil and drop a
drop of peppermint in there, stir it up a little
bit with toothpick and take it and let that cooling
oil like go down your esophagus down to your stomach
and it just coats and soothes. Is It really is
great and it's natural and you're not having to pump

(08:34):
yourself up with anti acids. I mean, maybe you want
to do that, that's fine to your prerogative, but this
is a natural way to cool everything down and support
your digestion. Now, it also is known for respiratory support,
so if you're congested, the menthol in the peppermint helps

(08:55):
open up your airways, making it a great oil to
diffuse during the cold season. And as well as that
whole energy component, peppermint really does energize, and so I
think peppermint is great to diffuse and right next to
you if you're working, if you sit in a cubicle,
you sit at a desk, you work a desk job.

(09:15):
Peppermint will help keep you awake, It'll help keep your
lungs open, It'll help keep you energized. Peppermint is kind
of the go to I think for a lot of
people and should be. I use it all the time.
I always have a bottle of peppermint around. It is
also a natural bug repellent, so bugs really do hate peppermint.

(09:36):
And you can use that to spray or diffuse. You
can make your own little bug spray. You can put
some water and which hazel and any essential oil and
you can make yourself a spray that which hazel will
kind of diffuse the oil into the water and you
only you don't need much, like if you have a
I don't know, a little four ounce spray bottle just

(09:57):
like a tea spoon of witch hazel in there and
then your oil of choice and you can make a spray.
So peppermint is a great natural way to get bugs
to go away. Lastly, peppermint is cooling and soothing. It's
great for muscle relief. If you've maybe overworked yourself on

(10:18):
a workout, have some sore muscles, it can provide some relief.
So you can add peppermint oil with some coconut oil
or any carrier oil. A carrier oil is just a
fatty oil, so avocado, sweet, almond, coconut. I like coconut.
It doesn't have a strong smell, and so I don't

(10:39):
like as much to use something like avocado or olive
is really strong. Now it'll be a peppermint olive smell.
You know, if you just use coconut, it's just flat
out a peppermint smell. But you can have that carrier
oil with it to dilute it. You have to test
your own self and know your own limits. I like
to put peppermint is elf straight on. Just I drop

(11:02):
a couple drops on the sore muscle and rub it in,
and it's fine for me. If you ever get peppermint
in your eyes or on a mucous membrane or somewhere
on your skin and it feels like, oh my gosh,
it's too cold, or it's it's too intense, right, then
you're just All you do is add a fatty oil
to it. Do not use water. Water will intensify the

(11:22):
feeling and the reaction. Just know, when you're using essential oils,
you always want to know where the fatty oil is.
I mean, in an emergency, I might even use something
like Crisco. It's like that's I probably wouldn't because I
don't even think I have Crisco in my house, But
you know what I mean, like like it's just the fat.
It's the idea of using a fat. You could use
butter if you're an emergency, but coconut oil is really

(11:47):
really great to have around. I've had a kid get
peppermint in their eye before, like it was on their fingers.
They rub their eyes and now they're crying because it hurts.
And so I take some coconut oil, put it on
a shrag and then just wipe their eye with it,
and it just grabs all those molecules and pulls them out,
and I mean literally the kids like screaming his head off,

(12:08):
and all of a sudden, he's like from a wild
scream to Okay, you know, he's like fine immediately. So
you just want to make sure that that's how you
handle You want to use the oil, not water. Water
would even intensify. So those are the benefits of peppermint oil. Now,
let's go to a little bit of history, because I

(12:30):
think it's always fun to learn a little bit. The
ancient Egyptians, they use peppermint leaves in tombs to help
with digestion in the afterlife. Isn't that amazing? What that
shows is the Egyptians understood that peppermint was good for
digestion and they were helping those who had passed on.
They to take that with them. The Romans and the Greeks,

(12:53):
they love peppermint for its ability to freshen breath and
aid digestion as well. In eighteenth century England, peppermint was
officially listed in the London of Pharmacopoeia as a remedy
for indigestion. So, as you can see, hundreds thousands of
years peppermint oil has been used to support digestive health.

(13:13):
And so this is something you can have in your
natural health toolbox where you don't have to run to
a medicine necessarily. I'm not telling you to get rid
of medicines if a doctor's given it to you, but
if you haven't been to the doctor and you don't
have a prescription for something, and you're like man I've
been having a digestion, so you might try a little

(13:35):
bottle of peppermint And because it's a digestive oil and
you may want to use that internally, then I would
say make sure you have one that's labeled for internal use. Again,
and even Young Living is a great one. If you
know somebody who sells Young Living, talk to them say hey,
how can I get a bottle of Young Living peppermint oil.
If you don't know anybody, you can reach out to

(13:57):
me and I can hook you up with someone at
the Oily Academy dot com. All right, your summary would
be you can diffuse it in the morning for an
instant energy boost, or you can inhale it before a
workout to improve your endurance and your focus. You could
rub a drop on your temples if you're having discomfort
in your head, or like I said, around your hairline,

(14:21):
back of your neck. You can add a drop to
warm water for just a little refreshing peppermint tea. You
can mix it with a carrier oil, rub it on
your stomach, or if it is labeled for ingestion, you
can put it in a capsule for digestive support. Yeah,
those are the main ways you can use it. But
I mean think about those are a lot of our

(14:43):
issues like energy, headaches, digestive support. I mean, this kind
of happened on a daily basis for some people. So
I hope you can learn from that, and I hope
that that helps you, and I hope you can have
a natural remedy in your cap to help get you
through all those times of discomfort. And if you want

(15:04):
to keep on learning, don't forget to visit the Yourromascience Academy
dot com and check out my aromatherapy course. The course
is a fifty hour course and you are a certified
a romatherapist at the end. I would love to have
you on board. And if you love this episode, please

(15:25):
Until next time, guys, stay fresh and stay oily.
